Abstract
BACKGROUND Global food loss and waste have raised environmental concerns regarding the generation of greenhouse gases (e.g., carbon dioxide and methane gas), which directly contribute to climate change. To address these concerns, the present research aims to upcycle food waste into an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. Various parameters including pretreatment of food waste (i.e., autoclave and non-autoclave), concentration of food waste culture medium (i.e., 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100%), harvesting efficiency and biochemical compounds of Chlorella sp. microalgae were carried out. RESULTS Based on the preliminary findings, the highest biomass concentration obtained from 10% food waste culture medium in the autoclave for Chlorella sp., including strains FSP-E, ESP-31 and CY-1, were 2.869 ± 0.022, 2.385 ± 0.018 and 0.985 ± 0.0026 g L-1, respectively. Since Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E exhibited the highest biomass concentration, this microalgal strain was selected to examine the subsequent parameters. Cultivation of C. vulgaris FSP-E in 100FW achieves a biomass concentration of 4.465 ± 0.008 g L-1 with biochemical compounds of 6.94 ± 1.396, 248.24 ± 0.976 and 406.23 ± 0.593 mg g-1 for lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, respectively. CONCLUSION This study shows that using food waste as an alternative culture medium for C. vulgaris FSP-E can achieve substantial biomass productivity and biochemical content. This research work would contribute to the concept of net zero emission and transitioning toward a circular bioeconomy by upcycling food waste as an alternative culture medium for the cultivation of microalgae. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Existing fossil-based commercial products present a significant threat to the depletion of global natural resources and the conservation of the natural environment. Also, the ongoing generation of waste is giving rise to challenges in waste management. Conventional practices for the management of waste, for instance, incineration and landfilling, emit gases that contribute to global warming. Additionally, the need for energy is escalating rapidly due to the growing populace and industrialization. To address this escalating desire in a sustainable manner, access to clean and renewable sources of energy is imperative for long-term development of mankind. These interrelated challenges can be effectively tackled through the scientific application of biowaste-to-bioenergy technologies. The current article states an overview of the strategies and current status of these technologies, including anaerobic digestion, transesterification, photobiological hydrogen production, and alcoholic fermentation which are utilized to convert diverse biowastes such as agricultural and forest residues, animal waste, and municipal waste into bioenergy forms like bioelectricity, biodiesel, bio alcohol, and biogas. The successful implementation of these technologies requires the collaborative efforts of government, stakeholders, researchers, and scientists to enhance their practicability and widespread adoption.

Abstract
Food waste conversion/valorization to produce bio-based chemicals plays a key role toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Food waste valorization to renewable chemicals is thus an attractive and eco-friendly approach to handling food waste. The production of platform chemicals from food waste is crucial for making highly value-added renewable chemicals. However, earlier reviews dealing with food waste valorization to produce value-added chemicals have emphasized the enhancement of methane, hydrogen, and ethanol production. Along these lines, the existing methods of food waste to produce platform chemicals (e.g., volatile fatty acids, glucose, hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, lactic acid, and succinic acid) through physical, chemical, and enzymatic pretreatments, hydrolysis, fermentation, and hydrothermal conversion are extensively reviewed. Finally, the challenges faced under these methods are discussed, along with suggestions for future research on platform chemical production from food waste.

Abstract
The status, recent trends and future perspectives in modelling and optimisation of anaerobic co-digestion is investigated. Areas that can be focused on and those which need further research towards enhancing biogas production are pointed out. Co-digestion, modelling and optimisation of anaerobic digestion as well as techno-economic aspects are reviewed in this paper. It was noted that co-digestion requires more research into a variety of bio-resources and their specific blend proportions. Modelling and optimisation of co-digestion with substrate seasonal fluctuations has not been addressed in previous studies. Controlling key process factors including temperature, pH, and carbon to nitrogen ratio is critical in improving biogas yield. Biogas hybridisation is yet to be explored in depth. The majority of researches are focused on mono-digestion, feedstock co-digestion, modelling, and optimisation of anaerobic digestion needs significant further investigations. A multi-objective approach taking all technical and economic parameters in the modelling and optimization is essential.

Abstract
The anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) of FWs produces variable methane yields, mainly due to variable carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio and proportions of lipids (L), carbohydrates (C), and proteins (P) in different FW samples. In this study, a significant interaction between C/N ratio and LCP composition was found and contributed to the differing trends between special (SMP) and theoretical methane production. The highest SMP of 595 mL CH4 gVS-1 occurred at C/N of 25 and LCP of 63.25:22.62:14.13, followed by 592 mL CH4 gVS-1 at C/N of 30 and LCP of 48.94:39.74:11.32, which also reflected their interaction. Attributing to their interactive effect on obtaining optimal process parameters and microbial community, the inhibition threshold of lipid as well as the methane yield was increased. Understanding the interaction between C/N ratio and LCP composition is an effective and promising way to obtain suitable mixture ratios of organic wastes under AcoD.

Abstract
India is one among the Asia's newly industrialized countries, in which urban centres generate large amount of municipal solid wastes due to the rapid urbanization. To demonstrate urban waste potentials for biogas production by anaerobic digestion, a comprehensive analysis on the availability of organic waste hotspots and its biogas potential for the exemplary case of Chennai, India, was undertaken. The identified hotspots and their biogas potential were plotted with Geographical Information System as thematic maps. The results of biogas potential tests revealed strong variations in the biogas potentials of individual waste streams from 240.2 to 514.2 mLN/g oDM (organic dry matter) with oDM reduction in the range of 36.4-61.5 wt.-%. Major waste generation hotspots were identified from the surveyed urban bio-reserves and the biogas potentials within an effective area of 5 km radius surrounding the hotspot were estimated. It was found that the biogas potential of individual hotspots ranged between 38.0-5938.7 m3/day. Further results revealed that the biogas potential during anaerobic co-digestion, by considering nearby bio-reserves in the effective areas of major hotspots, with and without residential organic waste, ranged between 4110.4-18-106.1 m3/day and 253.2-5969.5 m3/day, originating from 144.0-620.0 tons and 3.1-170.5 tons, respectively. Despite variations in the composition of the wastes, the Carbon/Nitrogen ratio, oDM reduction, biogas production and substrate availability were improved during co-digestion of nearby bio-reserves within the major hotspots, thereby improving the prevailing barriers in substrate management during anaerobic digestion of wastes.

Abstract
As the demand for utilizing environment-friendly and sustainable energy sources is increasing, the adoption of waste-to-energy technologies has started gaining attention. Producing biogas via anaerobic digestion (AD) is promising and well-established; however, this process in many circumstances is unable to be cost competitive with natural gas. In this research, we provide a technical assessment of current process challenges and compare the cost of biogas production via the AD process from the literature, Aspen Plus process modeling, and CapdetWorks software. We also provide insights on critical factors affecting the AD process and recommendations on optimizing the process. We utilize four types of wet wastes, including wastewater sludge, food waste, swine manure, and fat, oil, and grease, to provide a quantitative assessment of theoretical energy yields of biogas production and its economic potential at different plant scales. Our results show that the cost of biogas production from process and economic models are in line with the literature with a potential to go even lower for small-scale plants with technological advancements. This research illuminates potential cost savings for biogas production using different wastes and guide investors to make informed decisions, while achieving waste management goals.

A New Adjustment Strategy to Relieve Inhibition during Anaerobic Codigestion of Food Waste and Cow Manure. SUSTAINABILITY 2019. Abstract
A new adjustment strategy (controlling temperature, pH, inoculum dose, and liquid supernatant replacement in different digestion stages) was used to relieve volatile fatty acid (VFA) inhibition during anaerobic codigestion of FW and CM. Three digestion stages and groups were designed: initial stage (on days 1–5 the temperature was 45 °C), the second stage (on days 6–10 the temperature was 35 °C and inoculum was supplied), and the third stage (on days 11–50 the temperature was 35 °C and liquid supernatant was replaced). Groups A, B, and C had initial inoculums of 0, 100, and 200 mL and were supplied inoculums of 200, 100, and 0 mL, respectively. Results showed that in the initial stage, Group A had the highest VFA concentration (876.54 mg/L) and the lowest pH (3.6). In the second and third stages, pH (~5.5 and ~7.5) and VFA concentrations showed no significant differences in all groups. The highest VFA concentration (3248 mg/L), volatile solid (VS) removal rate (49.72%), and total methane production (TMP) (10,959 mL), the shortest λ (19.92 d), and the T90% (39.25 d) were obtained in Group B (pH 8.5). Group C had the highest chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate (96.91%). Group A obtained the maximal TBP of 25,626 mL (pH 8.0).
