Abstract
In nature, plants and insects engage in intricate interactions. Despite the increasing knowledge of the microbiomes of plants and insects, the extent to which they exchange and alter each other's microbiomes remains unclear. In this work, the bacterial community associated with nymphs of Philaenus spumarius (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), the stems of Coleostephus myconis where the nymphs were feeding, and the foam produced by the nymphs, were studied by culture-dependent and -independent approaches, with an attempt to elucidate the exchange of bacteria between plants and insects. The results suggest that both approaches complement each other, as many bacterial genera identified by metabarcoding were not detected by culturing, and vice versa. Overall, stems and foam exhibited higher bacterial diversity than nymphs, with all the samples showing enrichment in bacteria known to provide diverse benefits to their host. Stems and foam were the most similar in bacterial composition, but Burkholderiaceae and Moraxellaceae dominated the stems, whereas Rhizobiaceae and Sphingobacteriaceae dominated the foam. Nymphs exhibit the most distinct bacterial composition, yet more similar to that found in the stem compared to the foam. Indeed, nymphs were enriched on endosymbiotic bacteria, mostly Candidatus Sulcia and Sodalis, not found in the stem and foam. Nevertheless, during feeding, nymphs appeared to exchange several bacteria genera with C. myconis, with a significant number being incorporated into the bacteriome of the nymph. The genera Curvibacter, Cutibacterium, Methylobacterium, Pseudomonas and Rhizobium are likely the most exchanged. Nymphs also appear to exchange bacteria to the foam, notably species from the Enhydrobacter, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium and Roseomonas genera. More studies to infer the functions of the shared bacteria between P. spumarius-C. myconis are needed.

Abstract
Chrysomya megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae), commonly referred to as the oriental latrine fly, is a synanthropic blowfly species frequently associated with decomposing organic matter. This study sought to investigate the influence of various feeding substrates and temperature conditions, specifically constant temperatures of 15, 25, 35 °C, and variable temperatures averaging 23.31 °C, on the gut microbiome of C. megacephala. The microbiome analysis was conducted using the Illumina HiSeq platform for 16S rRNA gene sequencing in Changsha, China. Across all experimental conditions, the gut microbiome of C. megacephala yielded 1257 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), which were categorized into 26 phyla, 72 classes, 165 orders, 270 families, 516 genera, and 794 species. The study showed significant differences in the gut microbiome of C. megacephala between different feeding sources and temperature conditions across the lifespan. Low temperature had the potential to reduce the proportion abundance of bacterial communities in the gut microbiome, while high and variable temperature increased them. Metabolism was the main predicted function with diverse phenotypic characters in the gut microbiota of C. megacephala. The presence of diverse bacterial phenotypes in the gut microbiome of C. megacephala highlights its significant interest for medicine and offers promising applications in industry and agriculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high invasiveness of phytophagous insects is related to their adaptability to various environments, that can be influenced by their associated microbial community. Microbial symbionts are known to play a key role in the biology, ecology, and evolution of phytophagous insects, but their abundance and diversity are suggested to be influenced by environmental stressors. In this work, using 16 S rRNA metabarcoding we aim to verify (1) if laboratory rearing affects microbial symbiont communities of Zeugodacus cucurbitae females, a cosmopolitan pest of cucurbitaceous crops (2) if temperature, diet quality, and antibiotic treatments affect microbial symbiont communities of both laboratory and wild populations, and (3) if changes in microbial symbiont communities due to temperature, diet and antibiotic affect longevity and fecundity of Z. cucurbitae. RESULTS The results showed that microbial diversity, particularly the β-diversity was significantly affected by insect origin, temperature, diet quality, and antibiotic treatment. The alteration of gut microbial symbionts, specifically Enterobacteriaceae, was associated with low fecundity and longevity of Z. cucurbitae females feeding on optimal diet only. Fecundity reduction in antibiotic treated females was more pronounced when flies were fed on a poor diet without protein. CONCLUSIONS our study proves the relationship between gut microbiome and host fitness under thermal and diet fluctuation highlighting the importance of microbial community in the adaptation of Z. cucurbitae to environmental stress. Abstract
IMPORTANCE The caterpillar gut is an excellent model system for studying host-microbiome interactions, as it represents an extreme environment for microbial life that usually has low diversity and considerable variability in community composition. Our study design combines feeding caterpillars on a natural and artificial diet with controlled levels of plant secondary metabolites and uses metabarcoding and quantitative PCR to simultaneously profile bacterial and fungal assemblages, which has never been performed. Moreover, we focus on multiple caterpillar species and consider diet breadth. Contrary to many previous studies, our study suggested the functional importance of certain microbial taxa, especially bacteria, and confirmed the previously proposed lower importance of fungi for caterpillar holobiont. Our study revealed the lack of differences between monophagous and polyphagous species in the responses of microbial assemblages to plant secondary metabolites, suggesting the limited role of the microbiome in the plasticity of the herbivore diet.

Abstract
Plants protect their tissues from insect herbivory with specialized structures and chemicals, such as cuticles, trichomes, and metabolites contained therein. Bacteria inside the insect gut are also exposed to plant defences and can potentially modify the outcome of plant-insect interactions. To disentangle this complex multi-organism system, we used tomato mutants impaired in the production of plant defences (odorless-2 and jasmonic acid-insensitive1) and two cultivars (Ailsa Craig and Castlemart), exposed them to herbivory by the cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni H.) and collected the insect frass for bacterial community analysis. While the epicuticular wax and terpene profiles were variable, the leaf fatty acid composition remained consistent among genotypes. Moreover, larval weight confirmed the negative association between plant defences and insect performance. The distinctive frass fatty acid profiles indicated that plant genotype also influences the lipid digestive metabolism of insects. Additionally, comparisons of leaf and insect-gut bacterial communities revealed a limited overlap in bacterial species between the two sample types. Insect bacterial community abundance and diversity were notably reduced in insects fed on the mutants, with Enterobacteriaceae being the predominant group, whereas putatively pathogenic taxa were found in wildtype genotypes. Altogether, these results indicate that plant defences can modulate insect-associated bacterial community composition.

Abstract
The gut microbiota serves as a critical "organ" in the life cycle of animals, particularly in the intricate interplay between herbivorous pests and plants. This review summarizes the pivotal functions of the gut microbiota in mediating the insect-plant interactions, encompassing their influence on host insects, modulation of plant physiology, and regulation of the third trophic level species within the ecological network. Given these significant functions, it is plausible to harness these interactions and their underlying mechanisms to develop novel eco-friendly pest control strategies. In this context, we also outline some emerging pest control methods based on the intestinal microbiota or bacteria-mediated interactions, such as symbiont-mediated RNAi and paratransgenesis, albeit these are still in their nascent stages and confront numerous challenges. Overall, both opportunities and challenges coexist in the exploration of the intestinal microbiota-mediated interactions between insect pests and plants, which will not only enrich the fundamental knowledge of plant-insect interactions but also facilitate the development of sustainable pest control strategies.

Abstract
Termites are key decomposers of dead plant material involved in the organic matter recycling process in warm terrestrial ecosystems. Due to their prominent role as urban pests of timber, research efforts have been directed toward biocontrol strategies aimed to use pathogens in their nest. However, one of the most fascinating aspects of termites is their defense strategies that prevent the growth of detrimental microbiological strains in their nests. One of the controlling factors is the nest allied microbiome. Understanding how allied microbial strains protect termites from pathogen load could provide us with an enhanced repertoire for fighting antimicrobial-resistant strains or mining for genes for bioremediation purposes. However, a necessary first step is to characterize these microbial communities. To gain a deeper understanding of the termite nest microbiome, we used a multi-omics approach for dissecting the nest microbiome in a wide range of termite species. These cover several feeding habits and three geographical locations on two tropical sides of the Atlantic Ocean known to host hyper-diverse communities. Our experimental approach included untargeted volatile metabolomics, targeted evaluation of volatile naphthalene, a taxonomical profile for bacteria and fungi through amplicon sequencing, and further diving into the genetic repertoire through a metagenomic sequencing approach. Naphthalene was present in species belonging to the genera Nasutitermes and Cubitermes. We investigated the apparent differences in terms of bacterial community structure and discovered that feeding habits and phylogenetic relatedness had a greater influence than geographical location. The phylogenetic relatedness among nests' hosts influences primarily bacterial communities, while diet influences fungi. Finally, our metagenomic analysis revealed that the gene content provided both soil-feeding genera with similar functional profiles, while the wood-feeding genus showed a different one. Our results indicate that the nest functional profile is largely influenced by diet and phylogenetic relatedness, irrespective of geographical location.

Abstract
Our study investigated the potential of Annona squamosa (L.) fruit as a reservoir of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria having biotechnological implications, and phenolics capable of modifying the ecology of microbial consortia. Only a single species of lactic acid bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis) was identified, while Annona fruit seemed to be a preferred niche for yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Hanseniaspora uvarum), which were differentially distributed in the fruit. In order to identify ecological implications for inherent phenolics, the antimicrobial potential of water- and methanol/water-soluble extracts from peel and pulp was studied. Pulp extracts did not show any antimicrobial activity against the microbial indicators, while some Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus megaterium) were susceptible to peel extracts. Among lactic acid bacteria used as indicators, only Lactococcus lactis and Weissella cibaria were inhibited. The chemical profiling of methanol/water-soluble phenolics from Annona peel reported a full panel of 41 phenolics, mainly procyanidins and catechin derivatives. The antimicrobial activity was associated to specific compounds (procyanidin dimer type B [isomer 1], rutin [isomer 2], catechin diglucopyranoside), in addition to unidentified catechin derivatives. E. faecalis, which was detected in the epiphytic microbiota, was well adapted to the phenolics from the peel. Peel phenolics had a growth-promoting effect toward the autochthonous yeasts S. cerevisiae and H. uvarum.

Abstract
The gut microbiota of insects has been proven to play a role in the host's nutrition and foraging. The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is an important vector of various pathogens and causes severe allergic reactions in humans. Food bait is an effective and frequently used method of controlling this omnivorous insect. Thus, understanding the relationships among diet, gut microbiota, and olfactory preferences could be useful for optimizing this management strategy. In this study, B. germanica was exposed to different foods, i.e., high-fat diet, high-protein diet, high-starch diet, and dog food (as control). Then their gut microbial and olfactory responses were investigated. 16S rRNA gene sequencing confirmed that the gut microbiota significantly differed across the four treatments, especially in relation to bacteria associated with the metabolism and digestion of essential components. Behavioral tests and the antenna electrophysiological responses showed that insects had a greater preference for other types of diets compared with their long-term domesticated diet. Moreover, continuously providing a single-type diet could change almost all the OR genes' expression of B. germanica, especially BgORco, which was significantly repressed compared to control. These results indicate that diet can shape the gut microbiota diversity and drive the olfactory preference of B. germanica. The association between gut microbiota profiles and diets can be utilized in managing B. germanica according to their olfactory preference.

Abstract
Simple Summary Although locusts can cause major agricultural damage, they also constitute a valuable food resource. At present, L. migratoria manilensis has been largely domesticated, being considered an edible insect in China. Feeding variety is one of the main characteristics of L. migratoria manilensis. There are apparent differences in the capacity of locusts to adapt to different food plants. To elucidate the effect of different food plants (i.e., goosegrass, maize leaves, soybean leaves, and pakchoi) on the growth and development of L. migratoria manilensis, the gut bacterial community composition of L. migratoria manilensis fifth instars fed on different plants was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing. Gut bacterial communities were affected by food plants and may play an essential role in host adaption. Feeding on different food plants has significant effects on the growth and development of L. migratoria manilensis. The present study establishes a theoretical foundation for studying the interplay between gut bacteria structure and L. migratoria manilensis adaptation. Abstract Locusts, in particular Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen), have been associated with major damages in agriculture, forestry, and animal husbandry in China. At present, L. migratoria manilensis has been largely domesticated, being considered an edible insect in China. Feeding variety is one of the main characteristics of L. migratoria manilensis. It has been demonstrated that microorganisms inhabiting the insect gut impact nutrition, development, defense, and reproduction of the insect host. The aim of the present study was to search for the adaptation mechanism of L. migratoria manilensis feeding on four different food plants (goosegrass, maize leaves, soybean leaves, and pakchoi) and explore changes in the gut bacterial community structure of the insect at the fifth instar nymph stage. Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were the dominant phyla, whereas Kluyvera, Enterobacter, Pseudocitrobacter, Klebsiella, Cronobacter, Citrobacter, Lactococcus, and Weissella were the dominant genera in the gut of L. migratoria manilensis. Principal component analysis and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) revealed significant differences in the gut microbiota structure of L. migratoria manilensis fed on different food plants. Moreover, functional prediction analysis revealed that metabolic and cellular processes were the most enriched categories. Within the category of metabolic processes, the most enriched pathways were carbohydrate transport and metabolism; amino acid transport and metabolism; translation, ribosomal structure, and biogenesis; cell wall/membrane/envelope biogenesis; inorganic ion transport and metabolism; and energy production and conversion. Collectively, the present results revealed that the structure of gut bacterial communities in L. migratoria manilensis fed on different food plants is impacted by food plants, which may play an essential part in the adaptation of the host.

Abstract
Simple Summary To counter plant chemical defenses and exposure to agrochemicals, herbivorous insects have developed several adaptive strategies to guard against the ingested detrimental substances, including enhancing detoxifying enzyme activities, avoidance behavior, amino acid mutation of target sites, and lower penetration through a thicker cuticle. Insect microbiota play important roles in many aspects of insect biology and physiology. To better understand the role of insect symbiotic bacteria in metabolizing these detrimental substances, we summarize the research progress on the function of insect bacteria in metabolizing phytochemicals and agrochemicals, and describe their future potential application in pest management and protection of beneficial insects. Abstract The diversity and high adaptability of insects are heavily associated with their symbiotic microbes, which include bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and archaea. These microbes play important roles in many aspects of the biology and physiology of insects, such as helping the host insects with food digestion, nutrition absorption, strengthening immunity and confronting plant defenses. To maintain normal development and population reproduction, herbivorous insects have developed strategies to detoxify the substances to which they may be exposed in the living habitat, such as the detoxifying enzymes carboxylesterase, glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs), and cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP450s). Additionally, insect symbiotic bacteria can act as an important factor to modulate the adaptability of insects to the exposed detrimental substances. This review summarizes the current research progress on the role of insect symbiotic bacteria in metabolizing phytochemicals and agrochemicals (insecticides and herbicides). Given the importance of insect microbiota, more functional symbiotic bacteria that modulate the adaptability of insects to the detrimental substances to which they are exposed should be identified, and the underlying mechanisms should also be further studied, facilitating the development of microbial-resource-based pest control approaches or protective methods for beneficial insects.

Abstract
Gut microbes in insects may play an important role in the digestion, immunity and protection, detoxification of toxins, development, and reproduction. The rice leaffolder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a notorious insect pest that can damage rice, maize, and other gramineous plants. To determine the effects of host plants and generations on the gut microbiota of C. medinalis, we deciphered the bacterial configuration of this insect pest fed rice or maize for three generations by Illumina MiSeq technology. A total of 16 bacterial phyla, 34 classes, 50 orders, 101 families, 158 genera, and 44 species were identified in C. medinalis fed rice or maize for three generations. Host plants, insect generation, and their interaction did not influence the alpha diversity indices of the gut microbiota of C. medinalis. The dominant bacterial taxa were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes at the phylum level and Enterococcus and unclassified Enterobacteriaceae at the genus level. A number of twenty genera coexisted in the guts of C. medinalis fed rice or maize for three generations, and their relative abundances occupied more than 90% of the gut microbiota of C. medinalis. A number of two genera were stably found in the gut of rice-feeding C. medinalis but unstably found in the gut microbiota of maize-feeding C. medinalis, and seven genera were stably found in the gut of maize-feeding C. medinalis but unstably found in the gut of rice-feeding C. medinalis. In addition, many kinds of microbes were found in some but not all samples of the gut of C. medinalis fed on a particular host plant. PerMANOVA indicated that the gut bacteria of C. medinalis could be significantly affected by the host plant and host plant × generation. We identified 47 taxa as the biomarkers for the gut microbiota of C. medinalis fed different host plants by LEfSe. Functional prediction suggested that the most dominant role of the gut microbiota in C. medinalis is metabolism, followed by environmental information processing, cellular processes, and genetic information processing. Our findings will enrich the understanding of gut bacteria in C. medinalis and reveal the differences in gut microbiota in C. medinalis fed on different host plants for three generations.

Abstract
Diapause is a hormonally driven response which is triggered by environmental cues that signal impending adverse conditions and prompts metabolic, developmental, and behavioral changes to allow survival until the return of favorable conditions. Microbial symbionts have been shown to influence the metabolism, development, and behavior of their host organisms, all of which are common diapause-associated characteristics. Surveys of bacterial components in relation to diapause have been examined in few systems, of which the species are usually inactive during dormancy, such as eggs or pupae. This is specifically intriguing as adult female diapause in Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) can last between 4 and 7 mo and females remain mobile within their hibernacula. Furthermore, it is unknown how microbiota changes associated with prolonged dormancy are different between the lab and field for insect systems. This study aims to characterize how the microbiota of C. pipiens changes throughout diapause under both field and lab settings when provided identical food and water resources. Based on these studies, C. pipiens microbiota shifts as diapause progresses and there are considerable differences between field and lab individuals even when provided the same carbohydrate and water sources. Specific bacterial communities have more association with different periods of diapause, field and lab rearing conditions, and nutritional reserve levels. These studies highlight that diapausing mosquito microbiota studies ideally should occur in field mesocosms and at multiple locations, to increase applicability to wild C. pipiens as prolonged exposure to artificial rearing conditions could impact metrics related to diapause-microbiome interactions. Additionally, these findings suggest that it would be worthwhile to establish if the microbiota shift during diapause impacts host physiology and whether this shift is critical to diapause success.

Abstract
Chrysomelidae is a family of phytophagous insects with a highly variable degree of trophic specialization. The aim of this study is to test whether species feeding on different plants (generalists) harbour more complex microbiotas than those feeding on a few or a single plant species (specialists). The microbiota of representative leaf beetle species was characterized with a metabarcoding approach targeting V1–V2 and V4 regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA. Almost all the analysed species harbour at least one reproductive manipulator bacteria (e.g., Wolbachia, Rickettsia). Two putative primary symbionts, previously isolated only from a single species (Bromius obscurus), have been detected in two species of the same subfamily, suggesting a widespread symbiosis in Eumolpinae. Surprisingly, the well‐known aphid symbiont Buchnera is well represented in the microbiota of Orsodacne humeralis. Moreover, in this study, using Hill numbers to dissect the components of the microbiota diversity (abundant and rare bacteria), it has been demonstrated that generalist insect species harbour a more diversified microbiota than specialists. The higher microbiota diversity associated with a wider host‐plant spectrum could be seen as an adaptive trait, conferring new metabolic potential useful to expand the diet breath, or as a result of environmental stochastic acquisition conveyed by diet.
