Sensitivity to miconazole of micro-organisms associated with angular cheilitis

In vitro antifungal activity of two tissue conditioners combined with nystatin, miconazole and fluconazole against Candida albicans

AIM

To determine and compare antifungal activity of two tissue conditioners combined with nystatin, miconazole and fluconazole against Candida albicans.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two tissue conditioners Viscogel and GC Soft combined with nystatin, miconazole and fluconazole were tested against Candida albicans using agar core inhibition diameter assay. One-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's post-hoc test was used to test the intergroup difference. p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

Maximum inhibition was seen in the fluconazole groups followed by miconazole and the least inhibition was seen in case of nystatin group.

CONCLUSION

Tissue conditioners when mixed with antifungal agents showed satisfactory inhibition of Candida albicans.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Incorporation of antifungal drugs into tissue conditioners shows good inhibition of C. albicans and can be recommended for clinical use.

Treatment of angular cheilitis. The significance of microbial analysis, antimicrobial treatment, and interfering factors

This prospective study evaluated the significance of microbial analysis and antimicrobial treatment for the cure of angular cheilitis. Furthermore, various etiologic factors were investigated for their relative effect on the healing process. The study included 1) an open trial with 50 patients infected by Candida albicans and/or Staphylococcus aureus, and 2) an intraindividual comparison of eight patients with bilateral lesions infected by Candida albicans as the only detected pathogen. After a base-line examination the patients received ointments containing nystatin and/or fusidic acid, on the basis of the outcome of an initial microbial analysis. The patients were evaluated clinically, photographed, and examined for microorganisms at different time intervals. Ninety-six per cent of the patients who participated in the open trial had no sign of infection after 42 days of treatment. Lesions in the double-blind study, treated with nystatin, were healed after 28 days, whereas lesions that received placebo persisted throughout the treatment period. Increasing age, dry skin, and extended skinfolds at the corner of the mouth were factors closely related to the length of the healing process.

The effectiveness, in vitro, of miconazole and ketoconazole combined with tissue conditioners in inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans

Two recent antifungal agents, miconazole and ketoconazole, were combined with three tissue conditioners and tested in vitro for their effects on the growth of Candida albicans. Studies for comparison were carried out using the earlier antifungal agents, amphotericin B and nystatin. Miconazole and ketoconazole were as effective as nystatin in completely inhibiting the growth of Candida albicans. The ineffectiveness of amphotericin B when combined with tissue conditioners as an antifungal agent was confirmed. (See Addendum p.181.).
