Individual Differences in Rhythmic Cortical Entrainment Correlate with Predictive Behavior in Sensorimotor Synchronization

The effect of stimulus type and tempo on sensorimotor synchronization during finger-tapping in cerebellar ataxia: Behavioral and neural evidence

Sensorimotor synchronization, coordination of movements with external rhythms, occurs daily. Finger-tapping tasks are often used to study biological mechanisms underlying sensorimotor synchronization. This study investigates how deviations in auditory stimulus tempo from spontaneous motor tempo affect sensorimotor synchronization in patients with cerebellar ataxia during active listening and finger-tapping. Specifically, the cerebellum's role in these tasks is investigated by quantifying behavioral and neural dynamics of auditory-motor coupling. Sixteen patients with cerebellar ataxia and 14 healthy controls listened and tapped to music and metronomes at seven tempi (-12%, -8%, -4%, 0%, +4%, +8%, +12% of spontaneous tapping tempo) in randomized order. Sixty-four channel EEG, stimulus beat- and finger-tapping onsets were recorded during each trial. Behavioral synchronization was quantified by synchronization precision and accuracy, whereas neural entrainment was quantified with the stability index. Cerebellar patients displayed higher, more variable spontaneous tapping tempi than controls. Although precision was lower in patients than controls, they achieved high precision values. Differences in synchronizing between metronomes and music were observed for both precision and accuracy, favoring metronomes in both groups. Accuracy was impacted, with lowest asynchrony observed in patients with music, and across groups at the slowest tempi (-12%) and highest tempi (4, 8 and 10%). EEG results revealed greater stability for music during tapping. Although patients with cerebellar ataxia showed synchronization deficits, they could sufficiently synchronize with isochronous metronomes and music containing higher complexity, likely through sensory accumulation as a compensation strategy. These findings support the use of sensorimotor synchronization strategies in rehabilitation for cerebellar disorders.

A coupled oscillator model predicts the effect of neuromodulation and a novel human tempo-matching bias

Humans are known to exhibit endogenous neural oscillations in response to rhythmic stimuli that are phase-locked and frequency matched to those stimuli, a process known as entrainment. Yet, whether entrainment, as measured by electrophysiological recordings, reflects actual processing of rhythms or merely a reflection of the periodic nature of the stimulus is debated. Prior evidence for entrainment as a perceptual phenomenon comes from studies requiring subjects to listen to, compare sequentially, or detect features in rhythmic stimuli. However, one paradigm so far not used is one where subjects must listen to two simultaneous rhythms at different frequencies and adjust them to match. Here, human participants performed this task during EEG recordings (experiment 1), demonstrating spectral peaks at both tempo frequencies at frontocentral electrodes that shifted into alignment over the course of each trial. Behaviorally, participants tended to anchor the matched tempo to the starting comparison frequency, such that they underestimated the tempo for slower initial conditions and overestimated for faster initial conditions. A model of phase-coupled oscillators, in which both tempos were pulled toward one another, replicated both effects. This model further predicted that by enhancing the coupling strength of the constant tempo oscillator, both bias effects could be reduced. To test this, a second group of subjects performed the task while receiving 2 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to the frontocentral region. Consistent with model predictions, tACS attenuated both behavioral effects, particularly for initially slower conditions. These results support entrainment as an endogenous process that mediates beat perception.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work proposes how humans perceive the difference between two simultaneously presented tempos and bring them into perceived synchrony. EEG data provide evidence of entrainment to both tempos that move into alignment, and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) data provide causal evidence that strengthening one tempo improves performance.

Stability of Neural Oscillations Supports Auditory-Motor Synchronization

Previous findings suggest that auditory-motor synchronization is supported by increased coactivation of auditory and motor brain networks. Here, we compare synchronization accuracy and consistency with the temporal dynamics of neural signals during auditory-motor synchronization. Recurrence quantification analysis, a nonlinear technique for characterizing the temporal dynamics of complex systems, was applied to participants' neurophysiological activity recorded via electroencephalography (EEG) during an auditory-motor synchronization task. Changes in participants' neural predictability and stability were compared with their behavioral synchronization accuracy and consistency. EEG was recorded while participants produced a familiar melody at a comfortable rate as a measure of optimal temporal stability. Then, participants synchronized their taps with an auditory metronome presented at each participant's optimal rate and at rates 15% and 30% slower. EEG-based outcomes of determinism (predictability) and meanline (stability) were compared with behavioral synchronization measures. Participants showed decreased synchronization accuracy and higher EEG-based determinism at slower rates, consistent with lower flexibility. Furthermore, neural stability measures correlated with synchronization consistency across stimulus rates; as neural stability increased, so did behavioral synchronization consistency. Recurrence-based measures of neural stability may indicate a general mechanism supporting the maintenance of auditory-motor synchronization.

Musical neurodynamics

A great deal of research in the neuroscience of music suggests that neural oscillations synchronize with musical stimuli. Although neural synchronization is a well-studied mechanism underpinning expectation, it has even more far-reaching implications for music. In this Perspective, we survey the literature on the neuroscience of music, including pitch, harmony, melody, tonality, rhythm, metre, groove and affect. We describe how fundamental dynamical principles based on known neural mechanisms can explain basic aspects of music perception and performance, as summarized in neural resonance theory. Building on principles such as resonance, stability, attunement and strong anticipation, we propose that people anticipate musical events not through predictive neural models, but because brain-body dynamics physically embody musical structure. The interaction of certain kinds of sounds with ongoing pattern-forming dynamics results in patterns of perception, action and coordination that we collectively experience as music. Statistically universal structures may have arisen in music because they correspond to stable states of complex, pattern-forming dynamical systems. This analysis of empirical findings from the perspective of neurodynamic principles sheds new light on the neuroscience of music and what makes music powerful.

Intact sensorimotor rhythm abilities but altered audiovisual integration in cochlear implant users

Perception of rhythm significantly impacts various aspects of daily life, including engaging with music, discerning speech prosody nuances, and coordinating physical activities like walking and sports. Numerous studies in cognitive sciences have highlighted that human rhythmic synchronization is more precise when responding to auditory rhythmic stimuli than to visual ones when the timing cues are identical. However, deaf individuals were shown to display a heightened proficiency in synchronizing their movements with visual timing cues, outperforming hearing controls (HC). Furthermore, it was demonstrated that cochlear implant (CI) users can synchronize their movements with the rhythm of unpitched drum tones. These findings raise an important question: do CI users possess a visual synchronization advantage from their pre-implant deafness, while maintaining auditory synchronization skills comparable to those of HC? Alternatively, does the neural reorganization post-implantation negate the visual synchronization advantage acquired before the implant? This study aims to answer these questions by using a sensorimotor synchronization task to probe multisensory processing abilities in CI users. Specifically, we assessed unimodal and multimodal auditory and visual abilities in CI users compared to HC using a finger tapping synchrony task with four isochronous stimulus conditions: an auditory metronome, a visual metronome, a synchronous presentation of both the auditory and visual metronomes at the same tempo, and an asynchronous presentation of the auditory and visual stimuli at differing tempos. Synchronization to auditory stimuli surpassed synchronization to visual stimuli in both groups. CI users and HC demonstrated similar unisensory synchronization consistency within the visual and auditory conditions. While HC enhanced their consistency in the audio-visual synchronous condition compared to the unisensory visual condition, CI users did not display the same improvement. Furthermore, the interference from incongruent auditory information in the asynchronous condition was comparable in HC and CI users. This study highlights that, although pitch processing is known to be impaired in CI users, our findings suggest that rhythm processing remains relatively spared. As anticipated, CI users demonstrate similar auditory rhythmic synchronization skills to those of HC, in line with existing research. Moreover, we find that, unlike deaf individuals, CI users do not exhibit an advantage in visual rhythmic synchronization, which may be due to the relatively few CI users in the study who had early prolonged pre-implantation deafness. The observed shift in audio-visual integration among CI users suggests that post-deafness or post-implantation reorganization of their auditory cortex may impede the effective integration of temporal auditory stimulation from the implant and visual information.

Neural entrainment to the beat and working memory predict sensorimotor synchronization skills

Neural entrainment to rhythmic patterns has been proposed as a mechanism that underlies beat perception and could explain individual differences in sensorimotor synchronization abilities. Nevertheless, the neural and cognitive mechanisms behind beat perception remain an active research area. Our study examined whether neural entrainment to rhythmic patterns, cognitive resources, specifically working memory and musical background predict sensorimotor synchronization skills in adults. Using electroencephalogram (EEG), we recorded steady-state evoked potentials (SS-EPs) while participants passively listened to short tone sequences featuring syncopated (tones missing from certain beats) and unsyncopated (tones present on every beat) rhythms. Participants also completed a finger-tapping task, measuring tapping consistency and asynchrony, and a counting span task to assess working memory. Results showed increased steady-state evoked potentials (SS-EPs) at beat-related frequencies (1.25 Hz and its harmonics, 2.10/2.50 Hz, 5 Hz), indicating faithful neural tracking of the rhythms. Contrary to expectations, stronger neural entrainment to unsyncopated rhythms was associated with greater tapping variability and lower synchronization accuracy. In contrast, working memory capacity positively predicted tapping consistency, suggesting that automatic beat-based predictions as reflected in neural entrainment may reduce the flexibility needed for rhythm production. Musical background was not a significant predictor of tapping performance, while working memory was suggesting that working memory capacity support rhythm production skills by maintaining internal representations of time intervals. Our results challenged the assumption that stronger neural entrainment universally enhances synchronization skills and highlighted the multidimensionality of rhythm processing, and the complex relationship between neural entrainment, cognitive resources, and sensorimotor synchronization skills.

Registered Report: Replication and Extension of

Cognitive neuroscience research has attempted to disentangle stimulus-driven processing from conscious perceptual processing for decades. Some prior evidence for neural processing of perceived musical beat (periodic pulse) may be confounded by stimulus-driven neural activity. However, one study used frequency tagging, which measures electrical brain activity at frequencies present in a stimulus, to show increased brain activity at imagery-related frequencies when listeners imagined a metrical pattern while listening to an isochronous auditory stimulus (Nozaradan et al., 2011) in a manner that controlled for stimulus factors. It is unclear though whether this represents repeatable evidence for conscious perception of beat and whether the effect is influenced by relevant music experience, such as music and dance training. This registered report details the results of 13 independent conceptual replications of Nozaradan et al. (2011), all using the same vetted protocol. Listeners performed the same imagery tasks as in Nozaradan et al. (2011), with the addition of a behavioral task on each trial to measure conscious perception. Meta-analyses examined the effect of imagery condition, revealing smaller raw effect sizes (Binary: 0.03 μV, Ternary: 0.03 μV) than in the original study (Binary: 0.12 μV, Ternary: 0.20 μV) with no moderating effects of music or dance training. The difference in estimated effects sizes (this study: n = 152, η p 2 =.03 - .04; 2011 study: n = 8, η p 2 =.62 - .76) suggests that large sample sizes may be required to reliably observe these effects, which challenges the use of frequency tagging as a method to study (neural correlates of) beat perception. Furthermore, a binary logistic regression on individual trials revealed that only neural activity at the stimulus frequency predicted performance on the imagery-related task; contrary to our hypothesis, the neural activity at the imagery-related frequency was not a significant predictor. We discuss possible explanations for discrepancies between these findings and the original study and implications of the extensions provided by this registered report.

Major individual and regional variations in unit entrainment by oscillations of different frequencies

In vitro studies have shown that a neuron's electroresponsive properties can predispose it to oscillate at specific frequencies. In contrast, network activity in vivo can entrain neurons to rhythms that their biophysical properties do not predispose them to favor. However, there is limited information on the comparative frequency profile of unit entrainment across brain regions. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the frequency profile of unit entrainment in cortex, thalamus, striatum, and basolateral amygdala (BLA) in rats of either sex. Neurons recorded simultaneously in a given brain region and behavioral state generally had very similar frequency profiles of unit entrainment. While cortical, striatal, and thalamic neurons were more strongly entrained by low than high local field potential (LFP) frequencies, increases in the power of these oscillations were linked to decreased firing rates for low frequencies versus increased firing rates for high frequencies. Deviating from this general trend, BLA neurons were more strongly entrained by high gamma than all other frequency bands in all subjects and states. By contrast, neurons in other regions displayed marked inter-individual variability. That is, although neurons in some regions had exceptionally high entrainment values in particular frequency bands, these were not observed consistently across rats. Based on these findings, some might infer that oscillations play a minor role or that different oscillatory patterns can support the same functions. Alternatively, the oscillations critical to brain function could be those not investigated here, namely those arising transiently in response to specific task variables or contexts. Perhaps those are less susceptible to genetic variations. While our findings do not allow us to determine which explanation is correct, they do highlight the perils of averaging.

Measuring self-similarity in empirical signals to understand musical beat perception

Experiencing music often entails the perception of a periodic beat. Despite being a widespread phenomenon across cultures, the nature and neural underpinnings of beat perception remain largely unknown. In the last decade, there has been a growing interest in developing methods to probe these processes, particularly to measure the extent to which beat-related information is contained in behavioral and neural responses. Here, we propose a theoretical framework and practical implementation of an analytic approach to capture beat-related periodicity in empirical signals using frequency-tagging. We highlight its sensitivity in measuring the extent to which the periodicity of a perceived beat is represented in a range of continuous time-varying signals with minimal assumptions. We also discuss a limitation of this approach with respect to its specificity when restricted to measuring beat-related periodicity only from the magnitude spectrum of a signal and introduce a novel extension of the approach based on autocorrelation to overcome this issue. We test the new autocorrelation-based method using simulated signals and by re-analyzing previously published data and show how it can be used to process measurements of brain activity as captured with surface EEG in adults and infants in response to rhythmic inputs. Taken together, the theoretical framework and related methodological advances confirm and elaborate the frequency-tagging approach as a promising window into the processes underlying beat perception and, more generally, temporally coordinated behaviors.

Brain Bioelectric Responses to Short-Term Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Training in Indian and Russian University Students Studying in the Russian Arctic

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV BF) training aids adaptation to new climatic, geographical, and social environments. Neurophysiological changes during the HRV BF in individuals from tropical regions studying in the Arctic are not well understood. The aim of this study was to research electroencephalographic (EEG) changes during a single short-term HRV BF session in Indian and Russian students studying in the Russian Arctic. The Indian (n = 40) and Russian (n = 40) healthy students (age 19-21 years) at a medical university in Arkhangelsk (64°33' N 40°32' E) were studied. HRV and EEG parameters were measured at baseline (5 min) and during a short-term HRV BF session (5 min) to increase the total power (TP, ms2) of the HRV spectrum. The baseline heart rate and stress index levels were significantly higher in the Indian students. During the HRV BF sessions, the sympathetic activity decreased more significantly in Russian students, while the alpha EEG activity significantly increased across all brain regions in both groups. In Indian students, there was a notable increase in theta and beta1 EEG spectral power in the frontal, central, and temporal regions. HRV BF training in Indian students was associated with a more pronounced activation of brain systems compared with Russian students.

Physiological Entrainment: A Key Mind-Body Mechanism for Cognitive, Motor and Affective Functioning, and Well-Being

BACKGROUND

The human sensorimotor system can naturally synchronize with environmental rhythms, such as light pulses or sound beats. Several studies showed that different styles and tempos of music, or other rhythmic stimuli, have an impact on physiological rhythms, including electrocortical brain activity, heart rate, and motor coordination. Such synchronization, also known as the "entrainment effect", has been identified as a crucial mechanism impacting cognitive, motor, and affective functioning.

OBJECTIVES

This review examines theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on entrainment, with a particular focus on the physiological mechanisms underlying this phenomenon and its role in cognitive, motor, and affective functions. We also address the inconsistent terminology used in the literature and evaluate the range of measurement approaches used to assess entrainment phenomena. Finally, we propose a definition of "physiological entrainment" that emphasizes its role as a fundamental mechanism that encompasses rhythmic interactions between the body and its environment, to support information processing across bodily systems and to sustain adaptive motor responses.

METHODS

We reviewed the recent literature through the lens of the "embodied cognition" framework, offering a unified perspective on the phenomenon of physiological entrainment.

RESULTS

Evidence from the current literature suggests that physiological entrainment produces measurable effects, especially on neural oscillations, heart rate variability, and motor synchronization. Eventually, such physiological changes can impact cognitive processing, affective functioning, and motor coordination.

CONCLUSIONS

Physiological entrainment emerges as a fundamental mechanism underlying the mind-body connection. Entrainment-based interventions may be used to promote well-being by enhancing cognitive, motor, and affective functions, suggesting potential rehabilitative approaches to enhancing mental health.

The effect of rhythmic stimuli with spatial information on sensorimotor synchronization: an EEG and EMG study

Introduction

Sensorimotor synchronization (SMS) is the human ability to align body movement rhythms with external rhythmic stimuli. While the effects of rhythmic stimuli containing only temporal information on SMS have been extensively studied, less is known about how spatial information affects SMS performance. This study investigates the neural mechanisms underlying SMS with rhythmic stimuli that include both temporal and spatial information, providing insights into the influence of these factors across different sensory modalities.

Methods

This study compared the effects temporal information and spatial information on SMS performance across different stimuli conditions. We simultaneously recorded the electroencephalogram (EEG), the electromyogram (EMG), and behavioral data as subjects performed synchronized tapping to rhythmic stimuli. The study analyzed SMS performance under conditions including auditory, visual, and auditory-visual motion stimuli (containing both temporal and spatial information), as well as auditory, visual, and auditory-visual non-motion stimuli (containing only temporal information). Specifically, the research examined behavioral data (i.e., mean asynchrony, absolute asynchrony, and variability), neural oscillations, cortico-muscular coherence (CMC), and brain connectivity.

Results

The results demonstrated that SMS performance was superior with rhythmic stimuli containing both temporal and spatial information compared to stimuli with only temporal information. Moreover, sensory-motor neural entrainment was stronger during SMS with rhythmic stimuli containing spatial information within the same sensory modality. SMS with both types of rhythmic stimuli was found to be dynamically modulated by neural oscillations and cortical-muscular coupling in the beta band (13-30 Hz).

Discussion

These findings provide deeper insights into the combined effects of temporal and spatial information, as well as sensory modality, on SMS performance. The study highlights the dynamic modulation of SMS by neural oscillations and CMC, particularly in the beta band, offering valuable contributions to understanding the neural basis of sensorimotor synchronization.

Rhythmic Temporal Cues Coordinate Cross-frequency Phase-amplitude Coupling during Memory Encoding

Accumulating evidence suggests that rhythmic temporal cues in the environment influence the encoding of information into long-term memory. Here, we test the hypothesis that these mnemonic effects of rhythm reflect the coupling of high-frequency (gamma) oscillations to entrained lower-frequency oscillations synchronized to the beat of the rhythm. In Study 1, we first test this hypothesis in the context of global effects of rhythm on memory, when memory is superior for visual stimuli presented in rhythmic compared with arrhythmic patterns at encoding [Jones, A., & Ward, E. V. Rhythmic temporal structure at encoding enhances recognition memory, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 31, 1549-1562, 2019]. We found that rhythmic presentation of visual stimuli during encoding was associated with greater phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between entrained low-frequency (delta) oscillations and higher-frequency (gamma) oscillations. In Study 2, we next investigated cross-frequency PAC in the context of local effects of rhythm on memory encoding, when memory is superior for visual stimuli presented in-synchrony compared with out-of-synchrony with a background auditory beat [Hickey, P., Merseal, H., Patel, A. D., & Race, E. Memory in time: Neural tracking of low-frequency rhythm dynamically modulates memory formation. Neuroimage, 213, 116693, 2020]. We found that the mnemonic effect of rhythm in this context was again associated with increased cross-frequency PAC between entrained low-frequency (delta) oscillations and higher-frequency (gamma) oscillations. Furthermore, the magnitude of gamma power modulations positively scaled with the subsequent memory benefit for in- versus out-of-synchrony stimuli. Together, these results suggest that the influence of rhythm on memory encoding may reflect the temporal coordination of higher-frequency gamma activity by entrained low-frequency oscillations.

Experience with the cochlear implant enhances the neural tracking of spectrotemporal patterns in the Alberti bass

Cochlear implant (CI) users experience diminished music enjoyment due to the technical limitations of the CI. Nonetheless, behavioral studies have reported that rhythmic features are well-transmitted through the CI. Still, the gradual improvement of rhythm perception after the CI switch-on has not yet been determined using neurophysiological measures. To fill this gap, we here reanalyzed the electroencephalographic responses of participants from two previous mismatch negativity studies. These studies included eight recently implanted CI users measured twice, within the first six weeks after CI switch-on and approximately three months later; thirteen experienced CI users with a median experience of 7 years; and fourteen normally hearing (NH) controls. All participants listened to a repetitive four-tone pattern (known in music as Alberti bass) for 35 min. Applying frequency tagging, we aimed to estimate the neural activity synchronized to the periodicities of the Alberti bass. We hypothesized that longer experience with the CI would be reflected in stronger frequency-tagged neural responses approaching the responses of NH controls. We found an increase in the frequency-tagged amplitudes after only 3 months of CI use. This increase in neural synchronization may reflect an early adaptation to the CI stimulation. Moreover, the frequency-tagged amplitudes of experienced CI users were significantly greater than those of recently implanted CI users, but still smaller than those of NH controls. The frequency-tagged neural responses did not just reflect spectrotemporal changes in the stimuli (i.e., intensity or spectral content fluctuating over time), but also showed non-linear transformations that seemed to enhance relevant periodicities of the Alberti bass. Our findings provide neurophysiological evidence indicating a gradual adaptation to the CI, which is noticeable already after three months, resulting in close to NH brain processing of spectrotemporal features of musical rhythms after extended CI use.

The Neural Correlates of Spontaneous Beat Processing and Its Relationship with Music-Related Characteristics of the Individual

In the presence of temporally organized stimuli, there is a tendency to entrain to the beat, even at the neurological level. Previous research has shown that when adults listen to rhythmic stimuli and are asked to imagine the beat, their neural responses are the same as when the beat is physically accented. The current study explores the neural processing of simple beat structures where the beat is physically accented or inferred from a previously presented physically accented beat structure in a passive listening context. We further explore the associations of these neural correlates with behavioral and self-reported measures of musicality. Fifty-seven participants completed a passive listening EEG paradigm, a behavioral rhythm discrimination task, and a self-reported musicality questionnaire. Our findings suggest that when the beat is physically accented, individuals demonstrate distinct neural responses to the beat in the beta (13-23 Hz) and gamma (24-50 Hz) frequency bands. We further find that the neural marker in the beta band is associated with individuals' self-reported musical perceptual abilities. Overall, this study provides insights into the neural correlates of spontaneous beat processing and its connections with musicality.

Systemic neurophysiological entrainment to behaviorally relevant rhythmic stimuli

Physiological oscillations, such as those involved in brain activity, heartbeat, and respiration, display inherent rhythmicity across various timescales. However, adaptive behavior arises from the interaction between these intrinsic rhythms and external environmental cues. In this study, we used multimodal neurophysiological recordings, simultaneously capturing signals from the central and autonomic nervous systems (CNS and ANS), to explore the dynamics of brain and body rhythms in response to rhythmic auditory stimulation across three conditions: baseline (no auditory stimulation), passive auditory processing, and active auditory processing (discrimination task). Our findings demonstrate that active engagement with auditory stimulation synchronizes both CNS and ANS rhythms with the external rhythm, unlike passive and baseline conditions, as evidenced by power spectral density (PSD) and coherence analyses. Importantly, phase angle analysis revealed a consistent alignment across participants between their physiological oscillatory phases at stimulus or response onsets. This alignment was associated with reaction times, suggesting that certain phases of physiological oscillations are spontaneously prioritized across individuals due to their adaptive role in sensorimotor behavior. These results highlight the intricate interplay between CNS and ANS rhythms in optimizing sensorimotor responses to environmental demands, suggesting a potential mechanism of embodied predictive processing.

Auditory-motor entrainment and listening experience shape the perceptual learning of concurrent speech

Background

Plasticity from auditory experience shapes the brain's encoding and perception of sound. Though prior research demonstrates that neural entrainment (i.e., brain-to-acoustic synchronization) aids speech perception, how long- and short-term plasticity influence entrainment to concurrent speech has not been investigated. Here, we explored neural entrainment mechanisms and the interplay between short- and long-term neuroplasticity for rapid auditory perceptual learning of concurrent speech sounds in young, normal-hearing musicians and nonmusicians.

Method

Participants learned to identify double-vowel mixtures during ∼45 min training sessions with concurrent high-density EEG recordings. We examined the degree to which brain responses entrained to the speech-stimulus train (∼9 Hz) to investigate whether entrainment to speech prior to behavioral decision predicted task performance. Source and directed functional connectivity analyses of the EEG probed whether behavior was driven by group differences auditory-motor coupling.

Results

Both musicians and nonmusicians showed rapid perceptual learning in accuracy with training. Interestingly, listeners' neural entrainment strength prior to target speech mixtures predicted behavioral identification performance; stronger neural synchronization was observed preceding incorrect compared to correct trial responses. We also found stark hemispheric biases in auditory-motor coupling during speech entrainment, with greater auditory-motor connectivity in the right compared to left hemisphere for musicians (R>L) but not in nonmusicians (R=L).

Conclusions

Our findings confirm stronger neuroacoustic synchronization and auditory-motor coupling during speech processing in musicians. Stronger neural entrainment to rapid stimulus trains preceding incorrect behavioral responses supports the notion that alpha-band (∼10 Hz) arousal/suppression in brain activity is an important modulator of trial-by-trial success in perceptual processing.

Perception of temporal structure in speech is influenced by body movement and individual beat perception ability

The subjective experience of time flow in speech deviates from the sound acoustics in substantial ways. The present study focuses on the perceptual tendency to regularize time intervals found in speech but not in other types of sounds with a similar temporal structure. We investigate to what extent individual beat perception ability is responsible for perceptual regularization and if the effect can be eliminated through the involvement of body movement during listening. Participants performed a musical beat perception task and compared spoken sentences to their drumbeat-based versions either after passive listening or after listening and moving along with the beat of the sentences. The results show that the interval regularization prevails in listeners with a low beat perception ability performing a passive listening task and is eliminated in an active listening task involving body movement. Body movement also helped to promote a veridical percept of temporal structure in speech at the group level. We suggest that body movement engages an internal timekeeping mechanism, promoting the fidelity of auditory encoding even in sounds of high temporal complexity and irregularity such as natural speech.

Oscillatory attention in groove

Attention is not constant but rather fluctuates over time and these attentional fluctuations may prioritize the processing of certain events over others. In music listening, the pleasurable urge to move to music (termed 'groove' by music psychologists) offers a particularly convenient case study of oscillatory attention because it engenders synchronous and oscillatory movements which also vary predictably with stimulus complexity. In this study, we simultaneously recorded pupillometry and scalp electroencephalography (EEG) from participants while they listened to drumbeats of varying complexity that they rated in terms of groove afterwards. Using the intertrial phase coherence of the beat frequency, we found that while subjects were listening, their pupil activity became entrained to the beat of the drumbeats and this entrained attention persisted in the EEG even as subjects imagined the drumbeats continuing through subsequent silent periods. This entrainment in both the pupillometry and EEG worsened with increasing rhythmic complexity, indicating poorer sensory precision as the beat became more obscured. Additionally, sustained pupil dilations revealed the expected, inverted U-shaped relationship between rhythmic complexity and groove ratings. Taken together, this work bridges oscillatory attention to rhythmic complexity in relation to musical groove.

Effects of Stimulus Rate and Periodicity on Auditory Cortical Entrainment to Continuous Sounds

The neural mechanisms underlying the exogenous coding and neural entrainment to repetitive auditory stimuli have seen a recent surge of interest. However, few studies have characterized how parametric changes in stimulus presentation alter entrained responses. We examined the degree to which the brain entrains to repeated speech (i.e., /ba/) and nonspeech (i.e., click) sounds using phase-locking value (PLV) analysis applied to multichannel human electroencephalogram (EEG) data. Passive cortico-acoustic tracking was investigated in N = 24 normal young adults utilizing EEG source analyses that isolated neural activity stemming from both auditory temporal cortices. We parametrically manipulated the rate and periodicity of repetitive, continuous speech and click stimuli to investigate how speed and jitter in ongoing sound streams affect oscillatory entrainment. Neuronal synchronization to speech was enhanced at 4.5 Hz (the putative universal rate of speech) and showed a differential pattern to that of clicks, particularly at higher rates. PLV to speech decreased with increasing jitter but remained superior to clicks. Surprisingly, PLV entrainment to clicks was invariant to periodicity manipulations. Our findings provide evidence that the brain's neural entrainment to complex sounds is enhanced and more sensitized when processing speech-like stimuli, even at the syllable level, relative to nonspeech sounds. The fact that this specialization is apparent even under passive listening suggests a priority of the auditory system for synchronizing to behaviorally relevant signals.

A review of psychological and neuroscientific research on musical groove

When listening to music, we naturally move our bodies rhythmically to the beat, which can be pleasurable and difficult to resist. This pleasurable sensation of wanting to move the body to music has been called "groove." Following pioneering humanities research, psychological and neuroscientific studies have provided insights on associated musical features, behavioral responses, phenomenological aspects, and brain structural and functional correlates of the groove experience. Groove research has advanced the field of music science and more generally informed our understanding of bidirectional links between perception and action, and the role of the motor system in prediction. Activity in motor and reward-related brain networks during music listening is associated with the groove experience, and this neural activity is linked to temporal prediction and learning. This article reviews research on groove as a psychological phenomenon with neurophysiological correlates that link musical rhythm perception, sensorimotor prediction, and reward processing. Promising future research directions range from elucidating specific neural mechanisms to exploring clinical applications and socio-cultural implications of groove.

Mechanisms of sustained perceptual entrainment after stimulus offset

Temporal alignment of neural activity to rhythmic stimulation has been suggested to result from a resonating internal neural oscillator mechanism, but can also be explained by interval-based temporal prediction. Here, we investigate behavioural and brain responses in the post-stimulation period to compare an oscillatory versus an interval-based account. Hickok et al.'s (2015) behavioural paradigm yielded results that relate to a neural oscillatory entrainment mechanism. We adapted the paradigm to an event-related potential (ERP) suitable design: a periodic sequence was followed, in half of the trials, by near-threshold targets embedded in noise. The targets were played in various phases in relation to the preceding sequences' period. Participants had to detect whether targets were played or not, and their EEG was recorded. Both behavioural results and the P300 component of the ERP were not only partially consistent with an oscillatory mechanism but also partially consistent with an interval-based attentional gain mechanism. Instead, data obtained in the post-entrainment period can best be explained with a combination of both mechanisms.

Rhythmic musical activities may strengthen connectivity between brain networks associated with aging-related deficits in timing and executive functions

Brain aging and common conditions of aging (e.g., hypertension) affect networks important in organizing information, processing speed and action programming (i.e., executive functions). Declines in these networks may affect timing and could have an impact on the ability to perceive and perform musical rhythms. There is evidence that participation in rhythmic musical activities may help to maintain and even improve executive functioning (near transfer), perhaps due to similarities in brain regions underlying timing, musical rhythm perception and production, and executive functioning. Rhythmic musical activities may present as a novel and fun activity for older adults to stimulate interacting brain regions that deteriorate with aging. However, relatively little is known about neurobehavioral interactions between aging, timing, rhythm perception and production, and executive functioning. In this review, we account for these brain-behavior interactions to suggest that deeper knowledge of overlapping brain regions associated with timing, rhythm, and cognition may assist in designing more targeted preventive and rehabilitative interventions to reduce age-related cognitive decline and improve quality of life in populations with neurodegenerative disease. Further research is needed to elucidate the functional relationships between brain regions associated with aging, timing, rhythm perception and production, and executive functioning to direct design of targeted interventions.

Behavioral entrainment to rhythmic auditory stimulation can be modulated by tACS depending on the electrical stimulation field properties

Synchronization between auditory stimuli and brain rhythms is beneficial for perception. In principle, auditory perception could be improved by facilitating neural entrainment to sounds via brain stimulation. However, high inter-individual variability of brain stimulation effects questions the usefulness of this approach. Here we aimed to modulate auditory perception by modulating neural entrainment to frequency modulated (FM) sounds using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). In addition, we evaluated the advantage of using tACS montages spatially optimized for each individual's anatomy and functional data compared to a standard montage applied to all participants. Across two different sessions, 2 Hz tACS was applied targeting auditory brain regions. Concurrent with tACS, participants listened to FM stimuli with modulation rate matching the tACS frequency but with different phase lags relative to the tACS, and detected silent gaps embedded in the FM sound. We observed that tACS modulated the strength of behavioral entrainment to the FM sound in a phase-lag specific manner. Both the optimal tACS lag and the magnitude of the tACS effect were variable across participants and sessions. Inter-individual variability of tACS effects was best explained by the strength of the inward electric field, depending on the field focality and proximity to the target brain region. Although additional evidence is necessary, our results also provided suggestive insights that spatially optimizing the electrode montage could be a promising tool to reduce inter-individual variability of tACS effects. This work demonstrates that tACS effectively modulates entrainment to sounds depending on the optimality of the electric field. However, the lack of reliability on optimal tACS lags calls for caution when planning tACS experiments based on separate sessions.

Sensorimotor synchronization with visual, auditory, and tactile modalities

While it is well known that humans are highly responsive to rhythm, the factors that influence our ability to synchronize remain unclear. In the current study, we examined how stimulus modality and rhythmic deviation, along with the synchronizer's level of musicality, impacted sensorimotor synchronization (SMS). Utilizing a finger-tapping task and three sensory modalities (visual, auditory, and tactile), we manipulated rhythmic deviation by varying the temporal position, intensity, and availability of cues across four deviation levels. Additionally, to determine our participants' musical familiarity and aptitude, we administered the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index (Gold-MSI) questionnaire. We found that SMS to external rhythmic stimuli was significantly more precise for auditory and tactile than for visual sequences. Further, we found SMS consistency significantly decreased in all modalities with increased rhythmic deviation, suggesting rhythmic deviation directly relates to SMS difficulty. Moreover, a significant correlation was found between Gold-MSI scores and SMS consistency in the most rhythmically deviant level, such that the higher one's musical general sophistication score, the greater one's SMS ability. This held for all three modalities. Combined, these findings suggest that rhythmic synchronization performance is affected not only by the modality and rhythmic deviation of the stimuli but also by the musical general sophistication of the synchronizer.

Infants show enhanced neural responses to musical meter frequencies beyond low-level features

Music listening often entails spontaneous perception and body movement to a periodic pulse-like meter. There is increasing evidence that this cross-cultural ability relates to neural processes that selectively enhance metric periodicities, even when these periodicities are not prominent in the acoustic stimulus. However, whether these neural processes emerge early in development remains largely unknown. Here, we recorded the electroencephalogram (EEG) of 20 healthy 5- to 6-month-old infants, while they were exposed to two rhythms known to induce the perception of meter consistently across Western adults. One rhythm contained prominent acoustic periodicities corresponding to the meter, whereas the other rhythm did not. Infants showed significantly enhanced representations of meter periodicities in their EEG responses to both rhythms. This effect is unlikely to reflect the tracking of salient acoustic features in the stimulus, as it was observed irrespective of the prominence of meter periodicities in the audio signals. Moreover, as previously observed in adults, the neural enhancement of meter was greater when the rhythm was delivered by low-pitched sounds. Together, these findings indicate that the endogenous enhancement of metric periodicities beyond low-level acoustic features is a neural property that is already present soon after birth. These high-level neural processes could set the stage for internal representations of musical meter that are critical for human movement coordination during rhythmic musical behavior. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: 5- to 6-month-old infants were presented with auditory rhythms that induce the perception of a periodic pulse-like meter in adults. Infants showed selective enhancement of EEG activity at meter-related frequencies irrespective of the prominence of these frequencies in the stimulus. Responses at meter-related frequencies were boosted when the rhythm was conveyed by bass sounds. High-level neural processes that transform rhythmic auditory stimuli into internal meter templates emerge early after birth.

Can rhythm-mediated reward boost learning, memory, and social connection? Perspectives for future research

Studies of rhythm processing and of reward have progressed separately, with little connection between the two. However, consistent links between rhythm and reward are beginning to surface, with research suggesting that synchronization to rhythm is rewarding, and that this rewarding element may in turn also boost this synchronization. The current mini review shows that the combined study of rhythm and reward can be beneficial to better understand their independent and combined roles across two central aspects of cognition: 1) learning and memory, and 2) social connection and interpersonal synchronization; which have so far been studied largely independently. From this basis, it is discussed how connections between rhythm and reward can be applied to learning and memory and social connection across different populations, taking into account individual differences, clinical populations, human development, and animal research. Future research will need to consider the rewarding nature of rhythm, and that rhythm can in turn boost reward, potentially enhancing other cognitive and social processes.

Individual neurophysiological signatures of spontaneous rhythm processing

When sensory input conveys rhythmic regularity, we can form predictions about the timing of upcoming events. Although rhythm processing capacities differ considerably between individuals, these differences are often obscured by participant- and trial-level data averaging procedures in M/EEG research. Here, we systematically assessed neurophysiological variability displayed by individuals listening to isochronous (1.54Hz) equitone sequences interspersed with unexpected (amplitude-attenuated) deviant tones. Our approach aimed at revealing time-varying adaptive neural mechanisms for sampling the acoustic environment at multiple timescales. Rhythm tracking analyses confirmed that individuals encode temporal regularities and form temporal expectations, as indicated in delta-band (1.54Hz) power and its anticipatory phase alignment to expected tone onsets. Zooming into tone- and participant-level data, we further characterized intra- and inter-individual variabilities in phase-alignment across auditory sequences. Further, individual modelling of beta-band tone-locked responses showed that a subset of auditory sequences was sampled rhythmically by superimposing binary (strong-weak; S-w), ternary (S-w-w) and mixed accentuation patterns. In these sequences, neural responses to standard and deviant tones were modulated by a binary accentuation pattern, thus pointing towards a mechanism of dynamic attending. Altogether, the current results point toward complementary roles of delta- and beta-band activity in rhythm processing and further highlight diverse and adaptive mechanisms to track and sample the acoustic environment at multiple timescales, even in the absence of task-specific instructions.

Sustained Effect of Auditory Entrainment With Coordinated Movement Varies With Temporal Complexity of Sequential Tapping

While the ability to coordinate movements temporally with rhythmic auditory stimuli is universal, previous investigators showed that accurate rhythm reproduction depends on temporal complexity. To date, the effect of multiple pitches on the timing of rhythmic movements has been assumed. Exploring a possible sustained entrainment effect of auditory stimuli on sequential movement might further elucidate the role of temporal complexity and its interaction with multiple pitch engagement. Thus, we investigated the sustained effect of auditory entrainment and the interaction between temporal complexity and pitch on predefined sequential tapping with tapping sequences predefined before a synchronization-timekeeping task. Temporal complexity was manipulated by increasing the number of non-integer ratios in temporal rhythm. The rhythm sequences were presented with either multiple pitches or a single pitch. We found a reduction in mean asynchronies and ratio error in three rhythms with non-integer ratios, while inter-response interval error was reduced in the integer rhythm and the rhythm with one repetitive integer ratio and one non-integer ratio. Ratio error remanence was less in rhythms with two non-integer ratios. We found no significant difference between the two pitch types. There was a sustained entrainment effect of sequential tapping that varied with differing temporal complexity, and pitch information was not essential for auditory entrainment. These findings provide support for possible interventions aimed at motor learning.

Neural tracking of visual periodic motion

Periodicity is a fundamental property of biological systems, including human movement systems. Periodic movements support displacements of the body in the environment as well as interactions and communication between individuals. Here, we use electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neural tracking of visual periodic motion, and more specifically, the relevance of spatiotemporal information contained at and between their turning points. We compared EEG responses to visual sinusoidal oscillations versus nonlinear Rayleigh oscillations, which are both typical of human movements. These oscillations contain the same spatiotemporal information at their turning points but differ between turning points, with Rayleigh oscillations having an earlier peak velocity, shown to increase an individual's capacity to produce accurately synchronized movements. EEG analyses highlighted the relevance of spatiotemporal information between the turning points by showing that the brain precisely tracks subtle differences in velocity profiles, as indicated by earlier EEG responses for Rayleigh oscillations. The results suggest that the brain is particularly responsive to velocity peaks in visual periodic motion, supporting their role in conveying behaviorally relevant timing information at a neurophysiological level. The results also suggest key functions of neural oscillations in the Alpha and Beta frequency bands, particularly in the right hemisphere. Together, these findings provide insights into the neural mechanisms underpinning the processing of visual periodic motion and the critical role of velocity peaks in enabling proficient visuomotor synchronization.

Impaired neural entrainment to low frequency amplitude modulations in English-speaking children with dyslexia or dyslexia and DLD

Neural synchronization to amplitude-modulated noise at three frequencies (2 Hz, 5 Hz, 8 Hz) thought to be important for syllable perception was investigated in English-speaking school-aged children. The theoretically-important delta-band (∼2Hz, stressed syllable level) was included along with two syllable-level rates. The auditory steady state response (ASSR) was recorded using EEG in 36 7-to-12-year-old children. Half of the sample had either dyslexia or dyslexia and DLD (developmental language disorder). In comparison to typically-developing children, children with dyslexia or with dyslexia and DLD showed reduced ASSRs for 2 Hz stimulation but similar ASSRs at 5 Hz and 8 Hz. These novel data for English ASSRs converge with prior data suggesting that children with dyslexia have atypical synchrony between brain oscillations and incoming auditory stimulation at ∼ 2 Hz, the rate of stressed syllable production across languages. This atypical synchronization likely impairs speech processing, phonological processing, and possibly syntactic processing, as predicted by Temporal Sampling theory.

The rediscovered motor-related area 55b emerges as a core hub of music perception

Passive listening to music, without sound production or evident movement, is long known to activate motor control regions. Nevertheless, the exact neuroanatomical correlates of the auditory-motor association and its underlying neural mechanisms have not been fully determined. Here, based on a NeuroSynth meta-analysis and three original fMRI paradigms of music perception, we show that the long-ignored pre-motor region, area 55b, an anatomically unique and functionally intriguing region, is a core hub of music perception. Moreover, results of a brain-behavior correlation analysis implicate neural entrainment as the underlying mechanism of area 55b’s contribution to music perception. In view of the current results and prior literature, area 55b is proposed as a keystone of sensorimotor integration, a fundamental brain machinery underlying simple to hierarchically complex behaviors. Refining the neuroanatomical and physiological understanding of sensorimotor integration is expected to have a major impact on various fields, from brain disorders to artificial general intelligence.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging data acquired during passive listening to music suggest that pre-motor area 55b acts as a core hub of music processing in humans.

Endogenous sources of interbrain synchrony in duetting pianists

When people interact with each other, their brains synchronize. However, it remains unclear whether interbrain synchrony (IBS) is functionally relevant for social interaction or stems from exposure of individual brains to identical sensorimotor information. To disentangle these views, the current dual-EEG study investigated amplitude-based IBS in pianists jointly performing duets containing a silent pause followed by a tempo change. First, we manipulated the similarity of the anticipated tempo change and measured IBS during the pause, hence, capturing the alignment of purely endogenous, temporal plans without sound or movement. Notably, right posterior gamma IBS was higher when partners planned similar tempi, it predicted whether partners' tempi matched after the pause, and it was modulated only in real, not in surrogate pairs. Second, we manipulated the familiarity with the partner's actions and measured IBS during joint performance with sound. Although sensorimotor information was similar across conditions, gamma IBS was higher when partners were unfamiliar with each other's part and had to attend more closely to the sound of the performance. These combined findings demonstrate that IBS is not merely an epiphenomenon of shared sensorimotor information but can also hinge on endogenous, cognitive processes crucial for behavioral synchrony and successful social interaction.

Aging effects on neural processing of rhythm and meter

When listening to musical rhythm, humans can perceive and move to beat-like metrical pulses. Recently, it has been hypothesized that meter perception is related to brain activity responding to the acoustic fluctuation of the rhythmic input, with selective enhancement of the brain response elicited at meter-related frequencies. In the current study, electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded while younger (<35) and older (>60) adults listened to rhythmic patterns presented at two different tempi while intermittently performing a tapping task. Despite significant hearing loss compared to younger adults, older adults showed preserved brain activity to the rhythms. However, age effects were observed in the distribution of amplitude across frequencies. Specifically, in contrast with younger adults, older adults showed relatively larger amplitude at the frequency corresponding to the rate of individual events making up the rhythms as compared to lower meter-related frequencies. This difference is compatible with larger N1-P2 potentials as generally observed in older adults in response to acoustic onsets, irrespective of meter perception. These larger low-level responses to sounds have been linked to processes by which age-related hearing loss would be compensated by cortical sensory mechanisms. Importantly, this low-level effect would be associated here with relatively reduced neural activity at lower frequencies corresponding to higher-level metrical grouping of the acoustic events, as compared to younger adults.

Auditory timing-tuned neural responses in the human auditory cortices

Perception of sub-second auditory event timing supports multisensory integration, and speech and music perception and production. Neural populations tuned for the timing (duration and rate) of visual events were recently described in several human extrastriate visual areas. Here we ask whether the brain also contains neural populations tuned for auditory event timing, and whether these are shared with visual timing. Using 7T fMRI, we measured responses to white noise bursts of changing duration and rate. We analyzed these responses using neural response models describing different parametric relationships between event timing and neural response amplitude. This revealed auditory timing-tuned responses in the primary auditory cortex, and auditory association areas of the belt, parabelt and premotor cortex. While these areas also showed tonotopic tuning for auditory pitch, pitch and timing preferences were not consistently correlated. Auditory timing-tuned response functions differed between these areas, though without clear hierarchical integration of responses. The similarity of auditory and visual timing tuned responses, together with the lack of overlap between the areas showing these responses for each modality, suggests modality-specific responses to event timing are computed similarly but from different sensory inputs, and then transformed differently to suit the needs of each modality.

Neural correlates with individual differences in temporal prediction during auditory-motor synchronization

Temporal prediction ability is vital for movement synchronization with external rhythmic stimuli (sensorimotor synchronization); however, little is known regarding individual variations in temporal prediction ability and its neural correlates. We determined the underlying neural correlates of temporal prediction and individual variations during auditory-motor synchronization. We hypothesized that the non-primary motor cortices, such as the premotor cortex and supplementary motor area, are the key brain regions that correlate individual variations in prediction ability. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (7T) was performed for 18 healthy volunteers who tapped to 3 types of auditory metronome beats: isochronous, tempo change, and random. The prediction ability was evaluated using prediction/tracking ratios that were computed based on cross-correlations between tap timing and pacing events. Participants with a higher prediction/tracking ratio (i.e. stronger predictive tendency) tapped to metronome beats more accurately and precisely. The prediction/tracking ratio was positively correlated with the activity in the bilateral dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), suggesting that the bilateral PMd explains the individual variation in prediction ability. These results indicate that the PMd is involved in generating a model for temporal prediction of auditory rhythm patterns and its activity would reflect model accuracy, which is critical for accurate and precise sensorimotor synchronization.

Memory-Paced Tapping to Auditory Rhythms: Effects of Rate, Speech, and Motor Engagement

PURPOSE

Humans have a near-automatic tendency to entrain their motor actions to rhythms in the environment. Entrainment has been hypothesized to play an important role in processing naturalistic stimuli, such as speech and music, which have intrinsically rhythmic properties. Here, we studied two facets of entraining one's rhythmic motor actions to an external stimulus: (a) synchronized finger tapping to auditory rhythmic stimuli and (b) memory-paced reproduction of a previously heard rhythm.

METHOD

Using modifications of the Synchronization-Continuation tapping paradigm, we studied how these two rhythmic behaviors were affected by different stimulus and task features. We tested synchronization and memory-paced tapping for a broad range of rates, from stimulus onset asynchrony of subsecond to suprasecond, both for strictly isochronous tone sequences and for rhythmic speech stimuli (counting from 1 to 10), which are more ecological yet less isochronous. We also asked what role motor engagement plays in forming a stable internal representation for rhythms and guiding memory-paced tapping.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Our results show that individuals can flexibly synchronize their motor actions to a very broad range of rhythms. However, this flexibility does not extend to memory-paced tapping, which is accurate only in a narrower range of rates, around ~1.5 Hz. This pattern suggests that intrinsic rhythmic defaults in the auditory and/or motor system influence the internal representation of rhythms, in the absence of an external pacemaker. Interestingly, memory-paced tapping for speech rhythms and simple tone sequences shared similar "optimal rates," although with reduced accuracy, suggesting that internal constraints on rhythmic entrainment generalize to more ecological stimuli. Last, we found that actively synchronizing to tones versus passively listening to them led to more accurate memory-paced tapping performance, which emphasizes the importance of action-perception interactions in forming stable entrainment to external rhythms.

Steady state-evoked potentials of subjective beat perception in musical rhythms

Synchronization of movement to music is a seemingly universal human capacity that depends on sustained beat perception. Previous research has suggested that listener's conscious perception of the musical structure (e.g., beat and meter) might be reflected in neural responses that follow the frequency of the beat. However, the extent to which these neural responses directly reflect concurrent, listener-reported perception of musical beat versus stimulus-driven activity is understudied. We investigated whether steady state-evoked potentials (SSEPs), measured using electroencephalography (EEG), reflect conscious perception of beat by holding the stimulus constant while contextually manipulating listeners' perception and measuring perceptual responses on every trial. Listeners with minimal music training heard a musical excerpt that strongly supported one of two beat patterns (context phase), followed by a rhythm consistent with either beat pattern (ambiguous phase). During the final phase, listeners indicated whether or not a superimposed drum matched the perceived beat (probe phase). Participants were more likely to indicate that the probe matched the music when that probe matched the original context, suggesting an ability to maintain the beat percept through the ambiguous phase. Likewise, we observed that the spectral amplitude during the ambiguous phase was higher at frequencies that matched the beat of the preceding context. Exploratory analyses investigated whether EEG amplitude at the beat-related SSEPs (steady state-evoked potentials) predicted performance on the beat induction task on a single-trial basis, but were inconclusive. Our findings substantiate the claim that auditory SSEPs reflect conscious perception of musical beat and not just stimulus features.

Behavioral and Neural Dynamics of Interpersonal Synchrony Between Performing Musicians: A Wireless EEG Hyperscanning Study

Interpersonal synchrony refers to the temporal coordination of actions between individuals and is a common feature of social behaviors, from team sport to ensemble music performance. Interpersonal synchrony of many rhythmic (periodic) behaviors displays dynamics of coupled biological oscillators. The current study addresses oscillatory dynamics on the levels of brain and behavior between music duet partners performing at spontaneous (uncued) rates. Wireless EEG was measured from N = 20 pairs of pianists as they performed a melody first in Solo performance (at their spontaneous rate of performance), and then in Duet performances at each partner's spontaneous rate. Influences of partners' spontaneous rates on interpersonal synchrony were assessed by correlating differences in partners' spontaneous rates of Solo performance with Duet tone onset asynchronies. Coupling between partners' neural oscillations was assessed by correlating amplitude envelope fluctuations of cortical oscillations at the Duet performance frequency between observed partners and between surrogate (re-paired) partners, who performed the same melody but at different times. Duet synchronization was influenced by partners' spontaneous rates in Solo performance. The size and direction of the difference in partners' spontaneous rates were mirrored in the size and direction of the Duet asynchronies. Moreover, observed Duet partners showed greater inter-brain correlations of oscillatory amplitude fluctuations than did surrogate partners, suggesting that performing in synchrony with a musical partner is reflected in coupled cortical dynamics at the performance frequency. The current study provides evidence that dynamics of oscillator coupling are reflected in both behavioral and neural measures of temporal coordination during musical joint action.

Envelope reconstruction of speech and music highlights stronger tracking of speech at low frequencies

The human brain tracks amplitude fluctuations of both speech and music, which reflects acoustic processing in addition to the encoding of higher-order features and one's cognitive state. Comparing neural tracking of speech and music envelopes can elucidate stimulus-general mechanisms, but direct comparisons are confounded by differences in their envelope spectra. Here, we use a novel method of frequency-constrained reconstruction of stimulus envelopes using EEG recorded during passive listening. We expected to see music reconstruction match speech in a narrow range of frequencies, but instead we found that speech was reconstructed better than music for all frequencies we examined. Additionally, models trained on all stimulus types performed as well or better than the stimulus-specific models at higher modulation frequencies, suggesting a common neural mechanism for tracking speech and music. However, speech envelope tracking at low frequencies, below 1 Hz, was associated with increased weighting over parietal channels, which was not present for the other stimuli. Our results highlight the importance of low-frequency speech tracking and suggest an origin from speech-specific processing in the brain.

Riding the slow wave: Exploring the role of entrained low-frequency oscillations in memory formation

Neural oscillations are proposed to support a variety of behaviors, including long-term memory, yet their functional significance remains an active area of research. Here, we explore a potential functional role of low-frequency cortical oscillations in episodic memory formation. Recent theories suggest that low-frequency oscillations orchestrate rhythmic attentional sampling of the environment by dynamically modulating neural excitability across time. When these oscillations entrain to low-frequency rhythms present in the environment, such as speech or music, the brain can build temporal predictions about the onset of relevant events so that these events can be more efficiently processed. Building upon this literature, we propose that entrained low-frequency oscillations may similarly influence the temporal dynamics of episodic memory by rhythmically modulating encoding across time (mnemonic sampling). Central to this proposal is the phenomenon of cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling, whereby the amplitudes of faster (higher frequency) rhythms, such as gamma oscillations, couple to the phase of slower (lower-frequency) rhythms entrained to environmental stimuli. By imposing temporal structure on higher-frequency oscillatory activity previously linked to memory formation, entrained low-frequency oscillations could dynamically orchestrate memory formation and optimize encoding at specific moments in time. We discuss prior experimental and theoretical work relevant to this proposal.

Optimizing steady-state responses to index statistical learning: Response to Benjamin and colleagues

Neural entrainment refers to the tendency of neural activity to align with an ongoing rhythmic stimulus. Measures of neural entrainment have been increasingly leveraged as a tool to understand how the brain tracks different types of regularities in sensory input. However, the methods used to quantify neural entrainment are varied, with numerous analytic decision points whose consequences have not been well-characterized. In a valuable contribution to this field, Benjamin, Dehaene-Lambertz and Flo (submitted) systematically compare various methodological approaches for studying neural entrainment. They demonstrate that the use of overlapping epochs, in which sliding time windows are extracted and analyzed, results in an artifactual inflation of entrainment estimates at the frequency of overlap. Here, in response to this updated best practice recommendation, we reanalyzed three previously published datasets that had been previously analyzed with overlapping epochs. Although our main results and conclusions are unaltered from those originally reported, we agree with Benjamin and colleagues that overlapping epochs should generally be avoided in classic analyses of steady-state experiments, which aim to quantify overall peaks in phase or power across an entire experimental duration. However, we present a case that overlapping epochs may be beneficial in fine-grained analyses of neural entrainment over time. The use of overlapping epochs in such analyses could improve temporal resolution without complicating interpretability of the results in cases where the question of interest relates to relative changes in neural entrainment over time within a given frequency.

Rethinking Stereotypies in Autism

Stereotyped movements ("stereotypies") are semi-voluntary repetitive movements that are a prominent clinical feature of autism spectrum disorder. They are described in first-person accounts by people with autism as relaxing and that they help focus the mind and cope in overwhelming sensory environments. Therefore, we generally recommend against techniques that aim to suppress stereotypies in individuals with autism. Further, we hypothesize that understanding the neurobiology of stereotypies could guide development of treatments to produce the benefits of stereotypies without the need to generate repetitive motor movements. Here, we link first-person reports and clinical findings with basic neuroanatomy and physiology to produce a testable model of stereotypies. We hypothesize that stereotypies improve sensory processing and attention by regulating brain rhythms, either directly from the rhythmic motor command, or via rhythmic sensory feedback generated by the movements.

Free-Field Cortical Steady-State Evoked Potentials in Cochlear Implant Users

Auditory steady-state evoked potentials (SS-EPs) are phase-locked neural responses to periodic stimuli, believed to reflect specific neural generators. As an objective measure, steady-state responses have been used in different clinical settings, including measuring hearing thresholds of normal and hearing-impaired subjects. Recent studies are in favor of recording these responses as a part of the cochlear implant (CI) device-fitting procedure. Considering these potential benefits, the goals of the present study were to assess the feasibility of recording free-field SS-EPs in CI users and to compare their characteristics between CI users and controls. By taking advantage of a recently developed dual-frequency tagging method, we attempted to record subcortical and cortical SS-EPs from adult CI users and controls and measured reliable subcortical and cortical SS-EPs in the control group. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to remove CI stimulation artifacts, yet subcortical responses of several CIs were heavily contaminated by these artifacts. Consequently, only cortical SS-EPs were compared between groups, which were found to be larger in the controls. The lower cortical SS-EPs' amplitude in CI users might indicate a reduction in neural synchrony evoked by the modulation rate of the auditory input across different neural assemblies in the auditory pathway. The brain topographies of cortical auditory SS-EPs, the time course of cortical responses, and the reconstructed cortical maps were highly similar between groups, confirming their neural origin and possibility to obtain such responses also in CI recipients. As for subcortical SS-EPs, our results highlight a need for sophisticated denoising algorithms to pinpoint and remove artifactual components from the biological response.

Neural Entrainment Meets Behavior: The Stability Index as a Neural Outcome Measure of Auditory-Motor Coupling

Understanding rhythmic behavior in the context of coupled auditory and motor systems has been of interest to neurological rehabilitation, in particular, to facilitate walking. Recent work based on behavioral measures revealed an entrainment effect of auditory rhythms on motor rhythms. In this study, we propose a method to compute the neural component of such a process from an electroencephalographic (EEG) signal. A simple auditory-motor synchronization paradigm was used, where 28 healthy participants were instructed to synchronize their finger-tapping with a metronome. The computation of the neural outcome measure was carried out in two blocks. In the first block, we used Generalized Eigendecomposition (GED) to reduce the data dimensionality to the component which maximally entrained to the metronome frequency. The scalp topography pointed at brain activity over contralateral sensorimotor regions. In the second block, we computed instantaneous frequency from the analytic signal of the extracted component. This returned a time-varying measure of frequency fluctuations, whose standard deviation provided our "stability index" as a neural outcome measure of auditory-motor coupling. Finally, the proposed neural measure was validated by conducting a correlation analysis with a set of behavioral outcomes from the synchronization task: resultant vector length, relative phase angle, mean asynchrony, and tempo matching. Significant moderate negative correlations were found with the first three measures, suggesting that the stability index provided a quantifiable neural outcome measure of entrainment, with selectivity towards phase-correction mechanisms. We address further adoption of the proposed approach, especially with populations where sensorimotor abilities are compromised by an underlying pathological condition. The impact of using stability index can potentially be used as an outcome measure to assess rehabilitation protocols, and possibly provide further insight into neuropathological models of auditory-motor coupling.

Cortical entrainment to hierarchical contextual rhythms recomposes dynamic attending in visual perception

Temporal regularity is ubiquitous and essential to guiding attention and coordinating behavior within a dynamic environment. Previous researchers have modeled attention as an internal rhythm that may entrain to first-order regularity from rhythmic events to prioritize information selection at specific time points. Using the attentional blink paradigm, here we show that higher-order regularity based on rhythmic organization of contextual features (pitch, color, or motion) may serve as a temporal frame to recompose the dynamic profile of visual temporal attention. Critically, such attentional reframing effect is well predicted by cortical entrainment to the higher-order contextual structure at the delta band as well as its coupling with the stimulus-driven alpha power. These results suggest that the human brain involuntarily exploits multiscale regularities in rhythmic contexts to recompose dynamic attending in visual perception, and highlight neural entrainment as a central mechanism for optimizing our conscious experience of the world in the time dimension.

Neural and Behavioral Evidence for Vibrotactile Beat Perception and Bimodal Enhancement

The ability to synchronize movements to a rhythmic stimulus, referred to as sensorimotor synchronization (SMS), is a behavioral measure of beat perception. Although SMS is generally superior when rhythms are presented in the auditory modality, recent research has demonstrated near-equivalent SMS for vibrotactile presentations of isochronous rhythms [Ammirante, P., Patel, A. D., & Russo, F. A. Synchronizing to auditory and tactile metronomes: A test of the auditory-motor enhancement hypothesis. Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, 23, 1882-1890, 2016]. The current study aimed to replicate and extend this study by incorporating a neural measure of beat perception. Nonmusicians were asked to tap to rhythms or to listen passively while EEG data were collected. Rhythmic complexity (isochronous, nonisochronous) and presentation modality (auditory, vibrotactile, bimodal) were fully crossed. Tapping data were consistent with those observed by Ammirante et al. (2016), revealing near-equivalent SMS for isochronous rhythms across modality conditions and a drop-off in SMS for nonisochronous rhythms, especially in the vibrotactile condition. EEG data revealed a greater degree of neural entrainment for isochronous compared to nonisochronous trials as well as for auditory and bimodal compared to vibrotactile trials. These findings led us to three main conclusions. First, isochronous rhythms lead to higher levels of beat perception than nonisochronous rhythms across modalities. Second, beat perception is generally enhanced for auditory presentations of rhythm but still possible under vibrotactile presentation conditions. Finally, exploratory analysis of neural entrainment at harmonic frequencies suggests that beat perception may be enhanced for bimodal presentations of rhythm.

Accent-induced Modulation of Neural and Movement Patterns during Spontaneous Synchronization to Auditory Rhythms

Human rhythmic movements spontaneously synchronize with auditory rhythms at various frequency ratios. The emergence of more complex relationships—for instance, frequency ratios of 1:2 and 1:3—is enhanced by adding a congruent accentuation pattern (binary for 1:2 and ternary for 1:3), resulting in a 1:1 movement–accentuation relationship. However, this benefit of accentuation on movement synchronization appears to be stronger for the ternary pattern than for the binary pattern. Here, we investigated whether this difference in accent-induced movement synchronization may be related to a difference in the neural tracking of these accentuation profiles. Accented and control unaccented auditory sequences were presented to participants who concurrently produced finger taps at their preferred frequency, and spontaneous movement synchronization was measured. EEG was recorded during passive listening to each auditory sequence. The results revealed that enhanced movement synchronization with ternary accentuation was accompanied by enhanced neural tracking of this pattern. Larger EEG responses at the accentuation frequency were found for the ternary pattern compared with the binary pattern. Moreover, the amplitude of accent-induced EEG responses was positively correlated with the magnitude of accent-induced movement synchronization across participants. Altogether, these findings show that the dynamics of spontaneous auditory–motor synchronization is strongly driven by the multi-time-scale sensory processing of auditory rhythms, highlighting the importance of considering neural responses to rhythmic sequences for understanding and enhancing synchronization performance.

Environmental rhythms orchestrate neural activity at multiple stages of processing during memory encoding: Evidence from event-related potentials

Accumulating evidence suggests that rhythmic temporal structures in the environment influence memory formation. For example, stimuli that appear in synchrony with the beat of background, environmental rhythms are better remembered than stimuli that appear out-of-synchrony with the beat. This rhythmic modulation of memory has been linked to entrained neural oscillations which are proposed to act as a mechanism of selective attention that prioritize processing of events that coincide with the beat. However, it is currently unclear whether rhythm influences memory formation by influencing early (sensory) or late (post-perceptual) processing of stimuli. The current study used stimulus-locked event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the locus of stimulus processing at which rhythm temporal cues operate in the service of memory formation. Participants viewed a series of visual objects that either appeared in-synchrony or out-of-synchrony with the beat of background music and made a semantic classification (living/non-living) for each object. Participants’ memory for the objects was then tested (in silence). The timing of stimulus presentation during encoding (in-synchrony or out-of-synchrony with the background beat) influenced later ERPs associated with post-perceptual selection and orienting attention in time rather than earlier ERPs associated with sensory processing. The magnitude of post-perceptual ERPs also differed according to whether or not participants demonstrated a mnemonic benefit for in-synchrony compared to out-of-synchrony stimuli, and was related to the magnitude of the rhythmic modulation of memory performance across participants. These results support two prominent theories in the field, the Dynamic Attending Theory and the Oscillation Selection Hypothesis, which propose that neural responses to rhythm act as a core mechanism of selective attention that optimize processing at specific moments in time. Furthermore, they reveal that in addition to acting as a mechanism of early attentional selection, rhythm influences later, post-perceptual cognitive processes as events are transformed into memory.

Rhythm Complexity Modulates Behavioral and Neural Dynamics During Auditory–Motor Synchronization

We addressed how rhythm complexity influences auditory–motor synchronization in musically trained individuals who perceived and produced complex rhythms while EEG was recorded. Participants first listened to two-part auditory sequences (Listen condition). Each part featured a single pitch presented at a fixed rate; the integer ratio formed between the two rates varied in rhythmic complexity from low (1:1) to moderate (1:2) to high (3:2). One of the two parts occurred at a constant rate across conditions. Then, participants heard the same rhythms as they synchronized their tapping at a fixed rate (Synchronize condition). Finally, they tapped at the same fixed rate (Motor condition). Auditory feedback from their taps was present in all conditions. Behavioral effects of rhythmic complexity were evidenced in all tasks; detection of missing beats (Listen) worsened in the most complex (3:2) rhythm condition, and tap durations (Synchronize) were most variable and least synchronous with stimulus onsets in the 3:2 condition. EEG power spectral density was lowest at the fixed rate during the 3:2 rhythm and greatest during the 1:1 rhythm (Listen and Synchronize). ERP amplitudes corresponding to an N1 time window were smallest for the 3:2 rhythm and greatest for the 1:1 rhythm (Listen). Finally, synchronization accuracy (Synchronize) decreased as amplitudes in the N1 time window became more positive during the high rhythmic complexity condition (3:2). Thus, measures of neural entrainment corresponded to synchronization accuracy, and rhythmic complexity modulated the behavioral and neural measures similarly.
