Abstract
The ion-pair recognition ability of calix[4]pyrrole was utilized to form a multicomponent monomeric assembly and a linear supramolecular polymer via concurrent anion and bis-cation complexation. The inherent dynamic interactions of these assemblies were further used to construct pseudorotaxanes in monomeric and supramolecular polymer forms with pillar[5]arene.

Abstract
Crystalline supramolecular architectures mediated by cations, anions, ion pairs or neutral guest species are well established. However, the robust crystallization of a well-designed receptor mediated by labile anionic solvate clusters remains unexplored. Herein, we describe the synthesis and crystalline behaviors of a trimacrocyclic hexasubstituted benzene 2 in the presence of guanidium halide salts and chloroform. Halide hexasolvate clusters, viz. [Cl(CHCl3)6]-, [Br(CHCl3)6]-, and [I(CHCl3)6]-, were found to be critical to the crystallization process, as suggested by the single-crystal structures, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and NMR spectroscopy. This study demonstrates the hitherto unexpected role that labile ionic solvate clusters can play in stabilizing supramolecular architectures.

Abstract
In this study, we performed conductometry in various organic solvents to directly detect the transformation from tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) ion‐pair salt to the free ions through complexation with meso‐octamethylcalix[4]pyrrole (CP), which is a well‐known receptor for chloride anions. In the presence of CP, the conductivity of TBACl increases in various non‐polar solvents, indicating that complexation with CP enhances the ionic dissociation of TBACl in such non‐polar solvents. In other words, CP recognizes chloride as an ion‐paired salt as well as a free anion in non‐polar solvents. Additionally, the TBA(CP–Cl) complex exhibited a considerably lower ion‐pairing constant (Kip) than TBACl in non‐polar solvents, resulting in enhanced conductivity. Based on these findings, we can conclude that complexation of an anion with a hydrophobic anion receptor will be useful for creating functional and stimuli‐responsive soft materials in organic solvents using coulombic forces.

Abstract
This critical review describes selected examples extracted from the extensive literature generated during the past 42 years on the topic of anion binding in molecular capsules. The goal of including anions in molecular capsules emerges from the idea of incorporating the traits exhibited by biological receptors into synthetic ones. At the outset of this research area the capsules were unimolecular. The scaffold of the receptor was designed to covalently link a series of functional groups that could converge into a cavity and to avoid its collapse. The initial examples involved the encapsulation of one monoatomic spherical anion. With time, the cavity size of the receptor was increased and encapsulation of polyatomic anions and co-encapsulation became a reality. Synthetic economy fueled the use of aggregates of self-complementary molecules rather than one large molecule as capsules. The main purpose of this review is to give a general overview of the topic which might be of interest to supramolecular or non supramolecular chemists alike (149 references).
