Unraveling the Adhesion Behavior of Different Cell Lines on Biomimetic PEDOT Interfaces: The Role of Surface Morphology and Antifouling Properties

The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) interface, renowned for its biocompatibility and intrinsic conductivity, holds substantial potential in biosensing and cellular modulation. Through strategic functionalization, PEDOT derivatives can be adaptable for multifaceted applications. Notably, integrating phosphorylcholine (PC) groups into PEDOT, mimicking the hydrophilic headgroups from cell membranes, confers exceptional antifouling properties on the coating. This study systematically investigated biomolecule interactions with distinct forms of PEDOT, incorporating variations in surface modifications and structure. Zwitterionic PEDOT-PC was electropolymerized on smooth and nanostructured surfaces using various feeding ratios in electrolytes to finely control the antifouling properties of the interface. Precise electropolymerization conditions governed the attainment of smooth and nanostructured filamentous surfaces. The study employed a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) to assess protein binding behavior. Bovine serum albumin (BSA), lysozyme (LYZ), cytochrome c (cyt c), and fibronectin (FN) were used to evaluate their binding affinities for PEDOT films. FN, a pivotal extracellular matrix component, was included for connecting to cell adhesion behavior. Furthermore, the cellular adhesion behaviors on PEDOT interfaces were evaluated. Three cell lines─MG-63 osteosarcoma, HeLa cervical cancer, and fibroblast NIH/3T3 were examined. The presence of PC moieties significantly altered the adhesive response, including the number of attached cells, their morphologies, and nucleus shrinkage. MG-63 cells exhibited the highest tolerance for PC moieties. A feeding ratio of PEDOT-PC exceeding 70% resulted in cell apoptosis. This study contributes to understanding biomolecule adsorption on PEDOT surfaces of diverse morphologies and degrees of the antifouling moiety. Meanwhile, it also sheds light on the responses of various cell types.

Recent Developments in Multifunctional Antimicrobial Surfaces and Applications toward Advanced Nitric Oxide-Based Biomaterials

Implant-associated infections arising from biofilm development are known to have detrimental effects with compromised quality of life for the patients, implying a progressing issue in healthcare. It has been a struggle for more than 50 years for the biomaterials field to achieve long-term success of medical implants by discouraging bacterial and protein adhesion without adversely affecting the surrounding tissue and cell functions. However, the rate of infections associated with medical devices is continuously escalating because of the intricate nature of bacterial biofilms, antibiotic resistance, and the lack of ability of monofunctional antibacterial materials to prevent the colonization of bacteria on the device surface. For this reason, many current strategies are focused on the development of novel antibacterial surfaces with dual antimicrobial functionality. These surfaces are based on the combination of two components into one system that can eradicate attached bacteria (antibiotics, peptides, nitric oxide, ammonium salts, light, etc.) and also resist or release adhesion of bacteria (hydrophilic polymers, zwitterionic, antiadhesive, topography, bioinspired surfaces, etc.). This review aims to outline the progress made in the field of biomedical engineering and biomaterials for the development of multifunctional antibacterial biomedical devices. Additionally, principles for material design and fabrication are highlighted using characteristic examples, with a special focus on combinational nitric oxide-releasing biomedical interfaces. A brief perspective on future research directions for engineering of dual-function antibacterial surfaces is also presented.

Three-dimensionally printable shear-thinning triblock copolypeptide hydrogels with antimicrobial potency

Through rational design, block sequence controlled triblock copolypeptides comprising cysteine and tyrosine as well as a lysine or glutamic acid central block are devised. In these copolypeptides, each block contributes a specific property to the hydrogels to render them extrusion printable and antimicrobial. Three-dimensional (3D) printing of complex hydrogel structures with high shape retention is demonstrated. Moreover, composition dependent potent antimicrobial activity in contact-killing assays is elucidated.

Investigation of Spin Coating Cerium-Doped Hydroxyapatite Thin Films with Antifungal Properties

In this study, the cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ca10−xCex(PO4)6(OH)2 with xCe = 0.1, 10Ce-HAp) coatings obtained by the spin coating method were presented for the first time. The stability of the 10Ce-HAp suspension particles used in the preparation of coatings was evaluated by ultrasonic studies, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface morphology of the 10Ce-HAp coating was studied by SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The obtained 10Ce-HAp coatings were uniform and without cracks or unevenness. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for the investigation of fine chemical depth profiling. The antifungal properties of the HAp and 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings were assessed using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (C. albicans) fungal strain. The quantitative antifungal assays demonstrated that both 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings exhibited strong antifungal properties and that they successfully inhibited the development and adherence of C. albicans fungal cells for all the tested time intervals. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) visualization of the C. albicans fungal cells adherence to the 10Ce-HAp surface also demonstrated their strong inhibitory effects. In addition, the qualitative assays also suggested that the 10Ce-HAp coatings successfully stopped the biofilm formation.

Physico-Chemical Properties and In Vitro Antifungal Evaluation of Samarium Doped Hydroxyapatite Coatings

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) and samarium doped hydroxyapatite, Ca10−xSmx(PO4)6(OH)2, xSm = 0.05, (5SmHAp), coatings were prepared by sol-gel process using the dip coating method. The stability of 5SmHAp suspension was evaluated by ultrasound measurements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to examine the optical characteristics of HAp and 5SmHAp nanoparticles in suspension and coatings. The FTIR analysis revealed the presence of the functional groups specific to the structure of hydroxyapatite in the 5SmHAp suspensions and coatings. The morphology of 5SmHAp nanoparticles in suspension was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to evaluate the morphology of nanoparticle in suspension and the morphology of the surface on the coating. The SEM and TEM studies on 5SmHAp nanoparticles in suspension showed that our samples consist of nanometric particles with elongated morphology. The SEM micrographs of HAp and 5SmHAp coatings pointed out that the coatings are continuous and homogeneous. The surface morphology of the 5SmHAp coatings was also assessed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) studies. The AFM results emphasized that the coatings presented the morphology of a uniformly deposited layer with no cracks and fissures. The crystal structure of 5SmHAp coating was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface composition of 5SmHAp coating was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD and XPS analysis shown that the Sm3+ ions have been incorporated into the 5SmHAp synthesized material. The antifungal properties of the 5SmHAp suspensions and coatings were studied using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (C. albicans) fungal strains. The quantitative results of the antifungal assay showed that colony forming unity development was inhibited from the early phase of adherence in the case of both suspensions and coatings. Furthermore, the adhesion, cell proliferation and biofilm formation of the C. albicans were also investigated by AFM, SEM and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) techniques. The results highlighted that the C. albicans adhesion and cell development was inhibited by the 5SmHAp coatings. Moreover, the data also revealed that the 5SmHAp coatings were effective in stopping the biofilm formation on their surface. The toxicity of the 5SmHap was also investigated in vitro using HeLa cell line.

Biomimetic nonbiofouling polypyrrole electrodes grafted with zwitterionic polymer using gamma rays

Bioelectrodes, including metallic and conductive polymer (CP) bioelectrodes, often suffer from biofouling by contamination from microbacteria and/or biomolecules in biological systems, which can cause substantial impairment of biofunctionality and biocompatibility. Herein, we have employed an in situ polymerization of methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) by gamma radiation to introduce fouling-resistant properties onto the surface of the conductive polymer, polypyrrole (PPy). The concentrations of an MPC monomer were varied during the grafting. PPy electrodes modified with MPC (PPy-g-MPC) revealed excellent anti-biofouling properties, as demonstrated by multiple analyses, such as serum protein adsorption, fibroblast adhesion, bacteria adhesion, and scar tissue formation in vivo. Importantly, PPy-g-MPC, which was modified with 0.2 M MPC using gamma radiation, exhibited electrical properties similar to unmodified PPy electrodes, indicating that our MPC grafting strategies did not cause impairment of electrical/electrochemical properties of the original PPy electrodes while successfully introducing anti-biofouling properties. Zwitterionic MPC polymer grafting on PPy electrodes by in situ polymerization with gamma radiation will benefit the development of highly biocompatible and functional bioelectrodes, such as neural electrodes, stimulators, and biosensors.

Dual-Functional, Superhydrophobic Coatings with Bacterial Anticontact and Antimicrobial Characteristics

Bacterial pathogens are responsible for millions of cases of illnesses and deaths each year throughout the world. The development of novel surfaces and coatings that effectively inhibit and prevent bacterial attachment, proliferation, and growth is one of the crucial steps for tackling this global challenge. Herein, we report a dual-functional coating for aluminum surfaces that relies on the controlled immobilization of lysozyme enzyme (muramidase) into interstitial spaces of presintered, nanostructured thin film based on ∼200 nm silica nanoparticles and the sequential chemisorption of an organofluorosilane to the available interfacial areas. The mean diameter of the resultant lysozyme microdomains was 3.1 ± 2.5 μm with an average spacing of 8.01 ± 6.8 μm, leading to a surface coverage of 15.32%. The coating had an overall root-mean-square (rms) roughness of 539 ± 137 nm and roughness factor of 1.50 ± 0.1, and demonstrated static, advancing, and receding water contact angles of 159.0 ± 1.0°, 155.4 ± 0.6°, and 154.4 ± 0.6°, respectively. Compared to the planar aluminum, the coated surfaces produced a 6.5 ± 0.1 (>99.99997%) and 4.0 ± 0.1 (>99.99%) log-cycle reductions in bacterial surfaces colonization against Gram-negative Salmonella Typhimurium LT2 and Gram-positive Listeria innocua, respectively. We anticipate that the implementation of such a coating strategy on healthcare environments and surfaces and food-contact surfaces can significantly reduce or eliminate potential risks associated with various contamination and cross-contamination scenarios.

Urinary Catheter Coating Modifications: The Race against Catheter-Associated Infections

Urinary catheters are common medical devices, whose main function is to drain the bladder. Although they improve patients’ quality of life, catheter placement predisposes the patient to develop a catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). The catheter is used by pathogens as a platform for colonization and biofilm formation, leading to bacteriuria and increasing the risk of developing secondary bloodstream infections. In an effort to prevent microbial colonization, several catheter modifications have been made ranging from introduction of antimicrobial compounds to antifouling coatings. In this review, we discuss the effectiveness of different coatings in preventing catheter colonization in vitro and in vivo, the challenges in fighting CAUTIs, and novel approaches targeting host–catheter–microbe interactions.

Silver-Doped Hydroxyapatite Thin Layers Obtained by Sol-Gel Spin Coating Procedure

The main objective of this paper is to develop silver-doped hydroxyapatite suspensions (HApAg) with different concentrations of silver (?Ag = 0.05 and ?Ag = 0.2) in order to obtain uniform and homogenous layers by spin-coating procedure. The colloidal properties of HApAg suspensions are evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, ζ-potential (ZP), and ultrasound measurements. The ultrasound studies show that the HApAg20 sample revealed better stability than the HApAg5 sample. The structural and morphological analysis on suspensions and thin layers is also conducted. It is observed that the particles of the two samples have a similar shape and are uniform. The layers obtained present a homogeneous appearance of the surface without evidence of cracks or interruption of the coatings. The in vitro antifungal studies conducted on the two thin layers at two different time intervals (24 and 48 h) show that both HApAg5 (?Ag = 0.05) and HApAg20 (?Ag = 0.05) nanoparticles suspensions and composite layers inhibit the development of colony forming units (CFU) even after 24 h of incubation comparative to the control, represented by the Candida albicans (C. albicans) culture in a proper medium. The fungicidal effect was evident after 48 h of incubation in the case of both HApAg20 nanoparticles suspensions and composite layers.

Preparations of Silver/Montmorillonite Biocomposite Multilayers and Their Antifungal Activity

In this study, the results about the influence of the surface morphology of layers based on montmorillonite (MMT) and silver (Ag) on antimicrobial properties are reported. The coating depositions were performed in the plasma of a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering discharge. The studied layers were single montmorillonite layers (MMT) and silver/montmorillonite multilayers (MMT-Ag) obtained by magnetron sputtering technique with a different surface thickness. The resultant MMT-Ag biocomposite multilayers exhibited a uniform distribution of constituent elements and enhanced antimicrobial properties against fungal biofilm development. Glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) analysis revealed the formation of MMT-Ag biocomposite multilayers following the deposit of a silver layer for an MMT layer that was initially deposited on a Si substrate. The surface morphology and thickness evaluation of deposited biocomposite layers were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A qualitative analysis of the chemical composition of thin layers was performed and the elements O, Ag, Mg, Fe, Al, and Si were identified in the MMT-Ag biocomposite multilayers. The in vitro antifungal assay proved that the inhibitory effect against the growth of Candida albicans ATCC 101231 CFU was more emphasized in the case of MMT-Ag biocomposite multilayers that in the case of the MMT layer. Cytotoxicity studies performed on HeLa cells showed that the tested layers did not show significant toxicity at the time intervals during which the assay was performed. On the other hand, it was observed that the MMT layers exhibited slightly higher biocompatible properties than the MMT-Ag composite layers.

Zwitterionic Nanocellulose-Based Membranes for Organic Dye Removal

The development of efficient and environmentally-friendly nanomaterials to remove contaminants and pollutants (including harmful organic dyes) ravaging water sources is of major importance. Herein, zwitterionic nanocomposite membranes consisting of cross-linked poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) were prepared and tested as tools for water remediation. These nanocomposite membranes fabricated via the one-pot polymerization of the zwitterionic monomer, 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, within the BNC three-dimensional porous network, exhibit thermal stability up to 250 °C, good mechanical performance (Young's modulus ≥ 430 MPa) and high water-uptake capacity (627%-912%) in different pH media. Moreover, these zwitterionic membranes reduced the bacterial concentration of both gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli) pathogenic bacteria with maxima of 4.3- and 1.8-log CFU reduction, respectively, which might be a major advantage in reducing or avoiding bacterial growth in contaminated water. The removal of two water-soluble model dyes, namely methylene blue (MB, cationic) and methyl orange (MO, anionic), from water was also assessed and the results demonstrated that both dyes were successfully removed under the studied conditions, reaching a maximum of ionic dye adsorption of ca. 4.4-4.5 mg g-1. This combination of properties provides these PMPC/BNC nanocomposites with potential for application as antibacterial bio-based adsorbent membranes for water remediation of anionic and cationic dyes.

Zinc Doped Hydroxyapatite Thin Films Prepared by Sol–Gel Spin Coating Procedure

In this study, ZnHAp layers deposited on a Si substrate were obtained by a sol–gel spin-coating procedure. The ZnHAp solutions used to obtain the ZnHAp coatings were investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis, ζ-potential, ultrasound measurements, and flame atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The average measured hydrodynamic diameter from the DLS analysis, ζ-potential, and ultrasound measurements were analyzed so as to characterize and estimate the stability of the ZnHAp nanoparticles. The AAS results confirmed the presence of zinc in the gels used in the preparation of the ZnHAp layers. The layers were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The XRD results revealed the diffraction peaks of the hexagonal hydroxyapatite in all of the investigated samples. The morphology of the ZnHAp coatings annealed at 500 °C (ZnHAp-500) and 700 °C (ZnHAp-700), which evidenced that no fissures or cracks formed on the surface of the coatings. The biocompatibility assays indicated that the ZnHAp coatings did not present any toxicity towards the HeLa cells. Furthermore, the study regarding the cytotoxicity of the ZnHAp layers against microorganisms emphasized that ZnHAp coatings exhibited an inhibitory effect towards S. aureus bacterial cells and also towards C. albicans fungal cells.

Antimicrobial strategies for urinary catheters

Over 75% of hospital-acquired or nosocomial urinary tract infections are initiated by urinary catheters, which are used during the treatment of 16% of hospitalized patients. Taking the United States as an example, the costs of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are in excess of $451 million dollars/year. The biofilm formation by pathogenic microbes that protects pathogens from host immune defense and antimicrobial agents is the leading cause for CAUTI. Thus, tremendous efforts have been devoted to antimicrobial coating for urinary catheters in the past few decades, and it has been demonstrated to be one of the most direct and efficient strategies to reduce infections. In this article, we briefly summarize the current methods for preparation of antimicrobial coatings based on different stages in the biofilm formation, highlight recent progress in the urinary catheter coating material design and selection, discuss approaches to improving their long-term antimicrobial efficacy, biocompatibility, multidrug resistance and recurrent infections, and finally outline future requirements and prospects in antimicrobial coating material design. Corrosion resistance and antibacterial properties of polysiloxane modified layer-by-layer assembled self-healing coating on magnesium alloy

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have shown great potential in biomedical materials due to their biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, rapid corrosion rate, which is an inevitable obstacle, hinders their clinical applications. Besides, it is necessary to endow Mg alloys with antibacterial properties, which are crucial for temporary implants. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and polymethyltrimethoxysilane (PMTMS) were introduced into AZ31 Mg alloys via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly and siloxane self-condensation reaction. The characteristics of the composite films were investigated by SEM, UV-vis, FT-IR, and XRD measurements. Corrosion resistance of the samples was measured by electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests. Antibacterial activities of the films against Staphylococcus aureus were evaluated by plate-counting method. The results demonstrated that the composite film with smooth and uniform morphologies could enhance the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys owing to the physical barrier and the self-healing functionality of polysiloxane. Moreover, the composite coating possessed antibacterial properties and could prolong the release of assembled silver ions.

A review of the recent advances in antimicrobial coatings for urinary catheters

More than 75% of hospital-acquired or nosocomial urinary tract infections are initiated by urinary catheters, which are used during the treatment of 15-25% of hospitalized patients. Among other purposes, urinary catheters are primarily used for draining urine after surgeries and for urinary incontinence. During catheter-associated urinary tract infections, bacteria travel up to the bladder and cause infection. A major cause of catheter-associated urinary tract infection is attributed to the use of non-ideal materials in the fabrication of urinary catheters. Such materials allow for the colonization of microorganisms, leading to bacteriuria and infection, depending on the severity of symptoms. The ideal urinary catheter is made out of materials that are biocompatible, antimicrobial, and antifouling. Although an abundance of research has been conducted over the last forty-five years on the subject, the ideal biomaterial, especially for long-term catheterization of more than a month, has yet to be developed. The aim of this review is to highlight the recent advances (over the past 10years) in developing antimicrobial materials for urinary catheters and to outline future requirements and prospects that guide catheter materials selection and design.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

This review article intends to provide an expansive insight into the various antimicrobial agents currently being researched for urinary catheter coatings. According to CDC, approximately 75% of urinary tract infections are caused by urinary catheters and 15-25% of hospitalized patients undergo catheterization. In addition to these alarming statistics, the increasing cost and health related complications associated with catheter associated UTIs make the research for antimicrobial urinary catheter coatings even more pertinent. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the history, the latest progress in development of the coatings and a brief conjecture on what the future entails for each of the antimicrobial agents discussed.

Non-sticky and antimicrobial zwitterionic nanocomposite dressings for infected chronic wounds

Cytocompatible and multifunctional polymeric nanoparticles for transportation of bioactive molecules into and within cells

Multifunctional polymeric nanoparticles are materials with great potential for a wide range of biomedical applications. For progression in this area of research, unfavorable interactions of these nanoparticles with proteins and cells must be avoided in biological environments, for example, through treatment of the nanoparticle surfaces. Construction of an artificial cell membrane structure based on polymers bearing the zwitterionic phosphorylcholine group can prevent biological reactions at the surface effectively. In addition, certain bioactive molecules can be immobilized on the surface of the polymer to generate enough affinity to capture target biomolecules. Furthermore, entrapment of inorganic nanoparticles inside polymeric matrices enhances the nanoparticle functionality significantly. This review summarizes the preparation and characterization of cytocompatible and multifunctional polymeric nanoparticles; it analyzes the efficiency of their fluorescence function, the nature of the artificial cell membrane structure, and their performance as in-cell devices; and finally, it evaluates both their chemical reactivity and effects in cells.

Clickable and Antifouling Platform of Poly[(propargyl methacrylate)-ran-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine)] for Biosensing Applications

A functional copolymer platform, namely, poly[(propargyl methacrylate)-ran-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine)] (PPgMAMPC), was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization. In principle, the alkyne moiety of propargyl methacrylate (PgMA) should serve as an active site for binding azide-containing molecules via a click reaction, i.e., Cu-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC), the hydrophilic monomeric unit, should enable the copolymer to suppress nonspecific adsorption. The copolymers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. Thiol-terminated, PPgMAMPC-SH, obtained by aminolysis of PPgMAMPC, was immobilized on a gold-coated substrate using a "grafting to" approach via self-assembly. Azide-containing species, namely, biotin and peptide nucleic acid (PNA), were then immobilized on the alkyne-containing copolymeric platform via CuAAC. The potential use of surface-attached PPgMAMPC in biosensing applications was shown by detection of specific target molecules, i.e., streptavidin (SA) and DNA, by the developed sensing platform using a surface plasmon resonance technique. The copolymer composition strongly influenced the performance of the developed sensing platform in terms of signal-to-noise ratio in the case of the biotin-SA system and hybridization efficiency and mismatch discrimination for the PNA-DNA system.

A new kind of bio-inspired terpolymer was synthesized by a conventional free radical terpolymerization of dopamine methacrylamide (DMA), 2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. DMA consists of a biomimetic adhesive side chain covalently linked to a polymerizable methacrylate monomer. 1H NMR and gel permeation chromatography confirmed the successful synthesis of P(DMA-co-MPC-co-DMAEMA). The terpolymer could self-assemble on the macroscopic planar substrates with DMA as an anchor. After being quaternized by 1-bromo-heptane, terpolymers of P(DMA-co-MPC-co-DMAEMA+) with bactericidal function were obtained. The self-assembly terpolymer on the substrate was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle, spectroscopic ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. The hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the self-assembly coating increased greatly against bacteria, protein and cells with the increase of MPC content. As the existence of bactericidal cations for electrostatic targeting of bacteria as well as membrane lysis, the terpolymer coating showed excellent bactericidal function against E. coli and S. aureus. Biofilm inhibition assay showed that terpolymer coating was very efficient to resist bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation in a nutrient environment. Bacteria could be continuously "captured" and killed by the terpolymer coating, and then bacteria corpse was released into the solution. Importantly, this work provides a versatile strategy for the fabrication of a recycle antibacterial and antifouling surface to modify biomaterials.

Graphene film doped with silver nanoparticles: self-assembly formation, structural characterizations, antibacterial ability, and biocompatibility

Graphene and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are important building blocks for the synthesis of functional nanomaterials for bio-related applications. Here, we report a facile strategy to decorate AgNPs onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by the simultaneous reduction of silver ions and graphene oxide nanosheets within one system, and further to fabricate a dimension-adjustable RGO/AgNP multi-layered film by a thermal-driven self-assembly process. The structures of the fabricated RGO/AgNP hybrid films were identified by UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The thickness of the fabricated RGO/AgNP film was further measured by scanning electron microscopy. The hydrophilicity of the RGO/AgNP films was tested by contact angle measurement. Antibacterial and cell culture experiments based on the fabricated RGO/AgNP films indicate that this kind of hybrid film exhibits excellent antibacterial activity and high biocompatibility. A potential antibacterial mechanism of the fabricated RGO/AgNP hybrid film was proposed.

One-pot cross-linked copolymerization for the construction of robust antifouling and antibacterial composite membranes
