A Functionally Asymmetric Janus Hygro-Photothermal Hybrid for Atmospheric Water Harvesting in Arid Regions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are high-performance adsorbents for atmospheric water harvesting but have poor water-desorption ability, requiring excess energy input to release the trapped water. Addressing this issue, a Janus-structured adsorbent with functional asymmetry is presented. The material exhibits contrasting functionalities on either face - a hygroscopic face interfaced with a photothermal face. Hygroscopic aluminum fumarate MOF and photothermal CuxS layers are in-situ grown on opposite sides of a Cu/Al bimetallic substrate, resulting in a CuxS-Cu/Al-MOF Janus hygro-photothermal hybrid. The two faces serve as independent "factories" for photothermal conversion and water adsorption-desorption respectively, while the interfacing bimetallic layer serves as a "heat conveyor belt" between them. Due to the high porosity and hydrophilicity of the MOF, the hybrid exhibits a water-adsorption capacity of 0.161 g g-1 and a fast adsorption rate (saturation within 52 min) at 30% relative humidity. Thanks to the photothermal CuxS, the hybrid can reach 71.5 °C under 1 Sun in 20 min and desorb 97% adsorbed water in 40 min, exhibiting a high photothermal conversion efficiency of over 90%. CuxS-Cu/Al-MOF exhibits minimal fluctuations after 200 cycles, and its water-generation capacity is 3.21 times that of powdery MOF in 3 h in a self-designed prototype in one cycle.

When Polymorphism in Metal-Organic Frameworks Enables Water Sorption Profile Tunability for Enhancing Heat Allocation and Water Harvesting Performance

The development of thermally driven water-sorption-based technologies relies on high-performing water vapor adsorbents. Here, polymorphism in Al-metal-organic frameworks is disclosed as a new strategy to tune the hydrophilicity of MOFs. This involves the formation of MOFs built from chains of either trans- or cis- µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra. Specifically, [Al(OH)(muc)] or MIP-211, is made of trans, trans-muconate linkers, and cis-µ-OH-connected corner-sharing AlO4(OH)2 octahedra giving a 3D network with sinusoidal channels. The polymorph MIL-53-muc has a tiny change in the chain structure that results in a shift of the step position of the water isotherm from P/P0 ≈ 0.5 in MIL-53-muc, to P/P0 ≈ 0.3 in MIP-211. Solid-state NMR and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo reveal that the adsorption occurs initially between two hydroxyl groups of the chains, favored by the cis-positioning in MIP-211, resulting in a more hydrophilic behavior. Finally, theoretical evaluations show that MIP-211 would allow achieving a coefficient of performance for cooling (COPc) of 0.63 with an ultralow driving temperature of 60 °C, outperforming benchmark sorbents for small temperature lifts. Combined with its high stability, easy regeneration, huge water uptake capacity, green synthesis, MIP-211 is among the best adsorbents for adsorption-driven air conditioning and water harvesting from the air.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Harvesting and Concurrent Carbon Capture: A Review for Hygroscopic Materials

As water scarcity becomes a pending global issue, hygroscopic materials prove a significant solution. Thus, there is a good cause following the structure-performance relationship to review the recent development of hygroscopic materials and provide inspirational insight into creative materials. Herein, traditional hygroscopic materials, crystalline frameworks, polymers, and composite materials are reviewed. The similarity in working conditions of water harvesting and carbon capture makes simultaneously addressing water shortages and reduction of greenhouse effects possible. Concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture is likely to become a future challenge. Therefore, an emphasis is laid on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for their excellent performance in water and CO2 adsorption, and representative role of micro- and mesoporous materials. Herein, the water adsorption mechanisms of MOFs are summarized, followed by a review of MOF's water stability, with a highlight on the emerging machine learning (ML) technique to predict MOF water stability and water uptake. Recent advances in the mechanistic elaboration of moisture's effects on CO2 adsorption are reviewed. This review summarizes recent advances in water-harvesting porous materials with special attention on MOFs and expects to direct researchers' attention into the topic of concurrent water harvesting and carbon capture as a future challenge.

Confined Water Cluster Formation in Water Harvesting by Metal-Organic Frameworks: CAU-10-H versus CAU-10-CH3

Several metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) excel in harvesting water from the air or as heat pumps as they show a steep increase in water uptake at 10-30 % relative humidity (RH%). A precise understanding of which structural characteristics govern such behavior is lacking. Herein, CAU-10-H and CAU-10-CH3 are studied with H, CH3 corresponding to the functions grafted to the organic linker. CAU-10-H shows a steep water uptake ≈18 RH% of interest for water harvesting, yet the subtle replacement of H by CH3 in the organic linker drastically changes the water adsorption behavior to less steep water uptake at much higher humidity values. The materials' structural deformation and water ordering during adsorption with in situ sum-frequency generation, in situ X-ray diffraction, and molecular simulations are unraveled. In CAU-10-H, an energetically favorable water cluster is formed in the hydrophobic pore, tethered via H-bonds to the framework μOH groups, while for CAU-10-CH3, such a favorable cluster cannot form. By relating the findings to the features of water adsorption isotherms of a series of MOFs, it is concluded that favorable water adsorption occurs when sites of intermediate hydrophilicity are present in a hydrophobic structure, and the formation of energetically favorable water clusters is possible.

Tunable Low-Relative Humidity and High-Capacity Water Adsorption in a Bibenzotriazole Metal-Organic Framework

Materials capable of selectively adsorbing or releasing water can enable valuable applications ranging from efficient humidity and temperature control to the direct atmospheric capture of potable water. Despite recent progress in employing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as privileged water sorbents, developing a readily accessible, water-stable MOF platform that can be systematically modified for high water uptake at low relative humidity remains a significant challenge. We herein report the development of a tunable MOF that efficiently captures atmospheric water (up to 0.78 g water/g MOF) across a range of uptake humidity (27-45%) employing a readily accessible Zn bibenzotriazolate MOF, CFA-1 ([Zn5(OAc)4(bibta)3], H2bibta = 1H,1H'-5,5'-bibenzo[d][1,2,3]triazole), as a base for subsequent diversification. Controlling the metal identity (zinc, nickel) and coordinating nonstructural anion (acetate, chloride) via postsynthetic exchange modulates the relative humidity of uptake, facilitating the use of a single MOF scaffold for a diverse range of potential water sorption applications. We further present a fundamental theory dictating how continuous variation of the pore environment affects the relative humidity of uptake. Exchange of substituents preserves capacity for water sorption, increases hydrolytic stability (with 5.7% loss in working capacity over 450 water adsorption-desorption cycles for the nickel-chloride-rich framework), and enables continuous modulation for the relative humidity of pore condensation. This combination of stability and tunability within a synthetically accessible framework renders Ni-incorporated M5X4bibta3 promising materials for practical water sorption applications.

Sorption-Based Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Materials, Components, Systems, and Applications

Freshwater scarcity is a global challenge posing threats to the lives and daily activities of humankind such that two-thirds of the global population currently experience water shortages. Atmospheric water, irrespective of geographical location, is considered as an alternative water source. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has recently emerged as an efficient strategy for decentralized water production. SAWH thus opens up a self-sustaining source of freshwater that can potentially support the global population for various applications. In this review, the state-of-the-art of SAWH, considering its operation principle, thermodynamic analysis, energy assessment, materials, components, different designs, productivity improvement, scale-up, and application for drinking water, is first extensively explored. Thereafter, the practical integration and potential application of SAWH, beyond drinking water, for wide range of utilities in agriculture, fuel/electricity production, thermal management in building services, electronic devices, and textile are comprehensively discussed. The various strategies to reduce human reliance on natural water resources by integrating SAWH into existing technologies, particularly in underdeveloped countries, in order to satisfy the interconnected needs for food, energy, and water are also examined. This study further highlights the urgent need and future research directions to intensify the design and development of hybrid-SAWH systems for sustainability and diverse applications.

Monolithic Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Energy-Efficient Water Adsorption Applications

Space cooling and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) accounts for roughly 10% of global electricity use and are responsible for ca. 1.13 gigatonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Adsorbent-based HVAC technologies have long been touted as an energy-efficient alternative to traditional refrigeration systems. However, thus far, no suitable adsorbents have been developed which overcome the drawbacks associated with traditional sorbent materials such as silica gels and zeolites. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer order-of-magnitude improvements in water adsorption and regeneration energy requirements. However, the deployment of MOFs in HVAC applications has been hampered by issues related to MOF powder processing. Herein, three high-density, shaped, monolithic MOFs (UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂ , and Zr-fumarate) with exceptional volumetric gas/vapor uptake are developed-solving previous issues in MOF-HVAC deployment. The monolithic structures across the mesoporous range are visualized using small-angle X-ray scattering and lattice-gas models, giving accurate predictions of adsorption characteristics of the monolithic materials. It is also demonstrated that a fragile MOF such as Zr-fumarate can be synthesized in monolithic form with a bulk density of 0.76 gcm^-3 without losing any adsorption performance, having a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.71 with a low regeneration temperature (≤ 100 °C).

Tuning Hydrophilicity of Aluminum MOFs by a Mixed-Linker Strategy for Enhanced Performance in Water Adsorption-Driven Heat Allocation Application

Water adsorption-driven heat transfer (AHT) technology has emerged as a promising solution to address crisis of the global energy consumption and environmental pollution of current heating and cooling processes. Hydrophilicity of water adsorbents plays a decisive role in these applications. This work reports an easy, green, and inexpensive approach to tuning the hydrophilicity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by incorporating mixed linkers, isophthalic acid (IPA), and 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PYDC), with various ratios in a series of Al-xIPA-(100-x)PYDC (x: feeding ratio of IPA) MOFs. The designed mixed-linkers MOFs show a variation of hydrophilicity along the fraction of the linkers. Representative compounds with a proportional mixed linker ratio denoted as KMF-2, exhibit an S-shaped isotherm, an excellent coefficient of performance of 0.75 (cooling) and 1.66 (heating) achieved with low driving temperature below 70 °C which offers capability to employ solar or industrial waste heat, remarkable volumetric specific energy capacity (235 kWh m^-3 ) and heat-storage capacity (330 kWh m^-3 ). The superiority of KMF-2 to IPA or PYDC-containing single-linker MOFs (CAU-10-H and CAU-10pydc, respectively) and most of benchmark adsorbents illustrate the effectiveness of the mixed-linker strategy to design AHT adsorbents with promising performance.

Molecular Mechanisms behind Acetylene Adsorption and Selectivity in Functional Porous Materials

Since its first industrial production in 1890s, acetylene has played a vital role in manufacturing a wide spectrum of materials. Although current methods and infrastructures for various segments of acetylene industries are well-established, with emerging functional porous materials that enabled desired selectivity toward target molecules, it is of timely interest to develop new efficient technologies to promote safer acetylene processes with a higher energy efficiency and lower carbon footprint. In this Minireview, we, from the perspective of materials chemistry, review state-of-the-art examples of advanced porous materials, namely metal-organic frameworks and decorated zeolites, that have been applied to the purification and storage of acetylene. We also discuss the challenges on the roadmap of translational research in the development of new solid sorbent-based separation technologies and highlight areas which require future research efforts.

Water vapour and gas induced phase transformations in an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid metal-organic framework

In this work, we report the synthesis, structural characterisation and sorption properties of an 8-fold interpenetrated diamondoid (dia) metal-organic framework (MOF) that is sustained by a new extended linker ligand, [Cd(Imibz)₂], X-dia-2-Cd, HImibz or 2 = 4-((4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenylimino)methyl)benzoic acid. X-dia-2-Cd was found to exhibit reversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations between four distinct phases: an as-synthesised (from N,N-dimethylformamide) wide-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-α; a narrow-pore phase, X-dia-2-Cd-β, formed upon exposure to water; a narrow-pore phase obtained by activation, X-dia-2-Cd-γ; a medium-pore CO₂-loaded phase X-dia-2-Cd-δ. While the space group remained constant in the four phases, the cell volumes and calculated void space ranged from 4988.7 ų and 47% (X-dia-2-Cd-α), respectively, to 3200.8 ų and 9.1% (X-dia-2-Cd-γ), respectively. X-dia-2-Cd-γ also exhibited a water vapour-induced structural transformation to the water-loaded X-dia-2-Cd-β phase, resulting in an S-shaped sorption isotherm. The inflection point occurred at 18% RH with negligible hysteresis on the desorption profile. Water vapour temperature-humidity swing cycling (60% RH, 300 K to 0% RH, 333 K) indicated hydrolytic stability of X-dia-2-Cd and working capacity was retained after 128 cycles of sorbent regeneration. CO₂ (at 195 K) was also observed to induce a structural transformation in X-dia-2-Cd-γ and in situ PXRD studies at 1 bar of CO₂, 195 K revealed the formation of X-dia-2-Cd-δ, which exhibited 31% larger unit cell volume than X-dia-2-Cd-γ.

Structure and thermodynamics of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of materials with diverse chemical and structural properties, and have been shown to effectively adsorb various types of guest molecules. The mechanism of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr, a high-performance atmospheric water harvesting MOF, is investigated using a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and infrared spectroscopy. Calculations of thermodynamic and dynamical properties of water as a function of relative humidity allow for following the adsorption process from the initial hydration stage to complete filling of the MOF pores. Initial hydration begins at the water molecules that saturate the open Cr³⁺ sites of the framework, which is then followed by the formation of water chains that extend along the channels connecting the hexagonal pores of the framework. Water present in these channels gradually coalesces and fills the hexagonal pores sequentially after the channels are completely hydrated. The development of hydrogen-bond networks inside the MOF pores as a function of relative humidity is characterized at the molecular level using experimental and computational infrared spectroscopy. A detailed analysis of the OH-stretch vibrational band indicates that the low-frequency tail stems from strongly polarized hydrogen-bonded water molecules, suggesting the presence of some structural disorder in the experimental samples. Strategies for designing efficient water harvesting MOFs are also proposed based on the mechanism of water adsorption in NU-1500-Cr.

Novel strategies for the formulation and processing of aluminum metal-organic framework-based sensing systems toward environmental monitoring of metal ions

Aluminum is a relatively inexpensive and abundant metal for the mass production of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Aluminum-based MOFs (Al-MOFs) have drawn a good deal of research interest due to their unique properties for diverse applications (e.g., excellent chemical and structural stability). This review has been organized to highlight the current progress achieved in the synthesis/functionalization of Al-MOF materials with the special emphasis on their sensing application, especially toward metal ion pollutants in the liquid phase. To learn more about the utility of Al-MOF-based sensing systems, their performances have been evaluated for diverse metallic components in reference to many other types of sensing systems (in terms of the key quality assurance (QA) criteria such as limit of detection (LOD)). Finally, the challenges and outlook for Al-MOF-based sensing systems are discussed to help expand their real-world applications.

Water-Harvesting Metal-Organic Frameworks with Gigantic Al24 Units and their Deconstruction into Molecular Clusters

In contrast to the vast Al-oxo molecular cluster chemistry, Al-based building units for metal-organic framework (MOF) construction are limited in structural diversity and complexity. Synthesis of single crystalline MOFs based on this "hard" metal is further complicated by the poor reversibility of the Al-organic coordination linkages. Here, a strategy to employ two kinds of linkages with distinct strength-strong Al-carboxylate linkage and weak Cu-pyrazol N linkage-gives FDM-91 (FDM=Fudan Materials) with gigantic Al₂₄ -based units. After replacing the weak moieties with organic linkers post-synthetically, two new stable MOFs with exceptional water harvesting capacity (up to 0.53 g g^-1 ) and outstanding cycling performance are developed. Linkage-selective dissociation of FDM-91 further leads to the isolation of the Al₂₄ molecular clusters. The versatile chemistry performed here to reinforce or deconstruct MOFs provides a new way to make important extended and discrete structures.

Enhanced sorption in an indium-acetylenedicarboxylate metal-organic framework with unexpected chains of cis-μ-OH-connected {InO6} octahedra

Single crystals of the new metal-organic framework (MOF) In-adc (HHUD-4) were obtained through the reaction of linear acetylenedicarboxylic acid (H₂adc) with In(NO₃)₃·xH₂O as a racemic conglomerate in the chiral tetragonal space groups P4₃22 and P4₁22. Fundamentally different from other MOFs with linear linkers and trans-μ-OH-connected infinite {MO₆} secondary building units as in the MIL-53-type, the linear adc^2- linker leads to the formation of cis-μ-OH connected {InO₆} polyhedra, which have otherwise only been found before for V-shaped ligands, as in CAU-10-H. A far-reaching implication of this finding is the possibility that trans-μ-OH/straight MIL-53-type MOFs will have polymorphs of CAU-10-H cis-μ-OH/helical topology and vice versa. HHUD-4 is a microporous MOF with a BET surface area of up to 940 m² g^-1 and a micropore volume of up to 0.39 cm³ g^-1. Additionally, HHUD-4 features good adsorption uptakes of 3.77 mmol g^-1 for CO₂ and 1.25 mmol g^-1 for CH₄ at 273 K and 1 bar, respectively, and a high isosteric heat of adsorption of 11.4 kJ mol^-1 for H₂ with a maximum uptake of 6.36 mmol g^-1 at 77 K and 1 bar. Vapor sorption experiments for water and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, cyclohexane and n-hexane yielded uptake values of 135, 269, 116 and 205 mg g^-1, respectively, at 293 K. While HHUD-4 showed unremarkable results for water uptake and low stability for water, it exhibited good stability with steep VOC uptake steps at low relative pressures and a high selectivity of 17 for benzene/cyclohexane mixtures.

Towards High CO2 Conversions Using Cu/Zn Catalysts Supported on Aluminum Fumarate Metal-Organic Framework for Methanol Synthesis

Green methanol is a viable alternative for the storage of hydrogen and may be produced from captured anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide. The latter was hydrogenated over Cu-ZnO catalysts supported on an aluminum fumarate metal-organic framework (AlFum MOF). The catalysts, prepared via slurry phase impregnation, were assessed for thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. PXRD, FTIR, and SBET exhibited a decrease in crystallinity of the AlFum MOF support after impregnation with Cu-Zn active sites. SEM, SEM-EDS, and TEM revealed that the morphology of the support is preserved after metal loading, where H2-TPR confirmed the presence of active sites for hydrogen uptake. The catalysts exhibited good activity, with a doubling in Cu and Zn loading over the AlFum MOF, resulting in a 4-fold increase in CO2 conversions from 10.8% to 45.6% and an increase in methanol productivity from 34.4 to 56.5 gMeOH/Kgcat/h. The catalysts exhibited comparatively high CO selectivity and high yields of H2O, thereby favoring the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The selectivity of the catalysts towards methanol was found to be 12.9% and 6.9%. The performance of the catalyst supported on AlFum MOF further highlights the potential use of MOFs as supports in the heterogeneous thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 to value-added products.

Flexible Coordination Network Exhibiting Water Vapor-Induced Reversible Switching between Closed and Open Phases

That physisorbents can reduce the energy footprint of water vapor capture and release has attracted interest because of potential applications such as moisture harvesting, dehumidification, and heat pumps. In this context, sorbents exhibiting an S-shaped single-step water sorption isotherm are desirable, most of which are structurally rigid sorbents that undergo pore-filling at low relative humidity (RH), ideally below 30% RH. Here, we report that a new flexible one-dimensional (1D) coordination network, [Cu(HQS)(TMBP)] (H₂HQS = 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid and TMBP = 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine), exhibits at least five phases: two as-synthesized open phases, α ⊃ H₂O and β ⊃ MeOH; an activated closed phase (γ); CO₂ (δ ⊃ CO₂) and C₂H₂ (ϵ ⊃ C₂H₂) loaded phases. The γ phase underwent a reversible structural transformation to α ⊃ H₂O with a stepped sorption profile (Type F-IV) when exposed to water vapor at <30% RH at 300 K. The hydrolytic stability of [Cu(HQS)(TMBP)] was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) after immersion in boiling water for 6 months. Temperature-humidity swing cycling measurements demonstrated that working capacity is retained for >100 cycles and only mild heating (<323 K) is required for regeneration. Unexpectedly, the kinetics of loading and unloading of [Cu(HQS)(TMBP)] compares favorably with well-studied rigid water sorbents such as Al-fumarate, MOF-303, and CAU-10-H. Furthermore, a polymer composite of [Cu(HQS)(TMBP)] was prepared and its water sorption retained its stepped profile and uptake capacity over multiple cycles.

Metal organic framework/polyelectrolyte composites for water vapor sorption applications

Metal-organic framework (MOF) core particles of MIL-101(Cr), aluminum fumarate (Basolite® A520), MIL-53-TDC, zirconium fumarate, and UiO-66 were modified by adsorption of thin polyelectrolyte (PE)-based shells without deterioration of their crystal structure. By applying different PEs and depositing a single layer (MOF/PE) or one to three layer-by-layer assembled bilayers (MOF/LbL), the mass percent of shell material in the composite was varied from 0.6-2.5% to 50%. Under a constant relative pressure of water vapor, the moisture uptake by a MOF/PE and a MOF/LbL is rather comparable with its S-shaped curvature to that of pristine MOFs. The relevant differences, such as a shift of the ascending adsorption part to lower/higher relative pressure or an increase/decrease in water uptake in selected regions, are associated with the core-shell structure and related to the morphological changes of the MOF powders. The hydrophilic surface promotes the formation of liquid menisci at the points of contact between particles and accelerates the moisture uptake and loss. A decrease in water sorption under an atmosphere with high humidity by some composites can be associated with the inhibition of liquid water condensation by the more hydrophobic shells.

Mechanochemical Applications of Reactive Extrusion from Organic Synthesis to Catalytic and Active Materials

In the past, the use of mechanochemical methods in organic synthesis was reported as somewhat of a curiosity. However, perceptions have changed over the last two decades, and this technology is now being appreciated as a greener and more efficient synthetic method. The qualified “offer” of ball mills that make use of different set-ups, materials, and dimensions has allowed this technology to mature. Nevertheless, the intrinsic batch nature of mechanochemical methods hinders industrial scale-ups. New studies have found, in reactive extrusion, a powerful technique with which to activate chemical reactions with mechanical forces in a continuous flow. This new environmentally friendly mechanochemical synthetic method may be able to miniaturize production plants with outstanding process intensifications by removing organic solvents and working in a flow mode. Compared to conventional processes, reactive extrusions display high simplicity, safety, and cleanliness, which can be exploited in a variety of applications. This paper presents perspective examples in the better-known areas of reactive extrusions, including oxidation reactions, polymer processing, and biomass conversion. This work should stimulate further developments, as it highlights the versatility of reactive extrusion and the huge potential of solid-phase flow chemistry.

Understanding the Effects of Binders in Gas Sorption and Acidity of Aluminium Fumarate Extrudates

Understanding the impact of shaping processes on solid adsorbents is critical for the implementation of MOFs in industrial separation processes or as catalytic materials. Production of MOF‐containing shaped particles is typically associated with loss of porosity and modification of acid sites, two phenomena that affect their performance. Herein, we report a detailed study on how extrusion affects the crystallinity, porosity, and acidity of the aluminium fumarate MOF with clays or SiO₂ gel binders. Thorough characterization showed that the clay binders confer the extrudates a good mechanical robustness at the expense of porosity, while silica gel shows an opposite trend. The CO₂ selectivity towards CH₄, of interest for natural gas separation processes, is maintained upon the extrusion process. Moreover, probe FTIR spectroscopy revealed no major changes in the types of acid sites. This study highlights that these abundant and inexpensive clay materials may be used for scaling MOFs as active adsorbents.

Recent Progress in Designing Thermoelectric Metal-Organic Frameworks

Thermoelectrics that enable direct heat-electricity conversion possess unique advantages for green and renewable energy revolution and have received rapidly growing attention in the past decade. Among various thermoelectric materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with intrinsic high porosity and tunable physical/chemical properties are emerging as a promising class of materials that have been demonstrated to exhibit many unique merits for thermoelectric applications. Their structural topologies and thermoelectric properties can be facilely regulated by precisely selecting and arranging metal centers and organic ligands. Besides, a large variety of guest molecules can be incorporated within their pores, giving rise to novel avenues of raising energy-conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent advances in designing conductive MOFs and MOF-based composites for thermoelectric applications. It first introduces the fundamental thermoelectric parameters and the underlying regulation mechanisms specifically effective for MOFs, then summarizes the related studies conducted in recent years, where the structural design strategies of tuning thermoelectric properties are demonstrated and discussed. In the final part, conclusions and perspectives with the envision of an outlook for this promising area are presented.

Ultrahigh water sorption on highly nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials derived from uric acid

HYPOTHESIS

Developing materials for thermally driven adsorption chillers and adsorption heat pumps is a growing research field due to the potential of these technologies to address up to 50% of the world's total energy demand. These materials must be abundant, easy to synthesize, hydrophilic, and low in cost. Bare carbon materials are hydrophobic and therefore usually not considered for these applications. However, by introducing heteroatoms and tuning their porosity, the hydrophilicity of carbonaceous networks can be increased significantly.

EXPERIMENTAL

Herein, a series of highly nitrogen doped carbonaceous materials (CNs) have been synthesized by submitting uric acid to heat treatment at different temperatures in the presence of an inorganic salt mix as solvent and pore template. The effect of the thermal treatment on the materials composition, pore network, and water sorption capability has been studied.

FINDINGS

At 800 °C, a nitrogen depleted carbonaceous material with a maximal water uptake of 1.38g_H2O g^-1 is obtained. Condensation at 750 °C creates an ultra-hydrophilic CN with a water uptake of 0.8 g_H2O g^-1 at already much lower partial pressures. While the maximum uptake is mainly ascribed to the mesopore volume of the material, the differences in hydrophilicity can be controlled by functionality.

Isoreticular Chemistry of Group 13 Metal-Organic Framework Compounds Based on V-Shaped Linker Molecules: Exceptions to the Rule?

Following the concept of isoreticular chemistry, we carried out a systematic study on Ga-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using six V-shaped linker molecules of differing sizes, geometries, and additional functional groups. The linkers included three isophthalic acid derivatives (m-H₂BDC-R, R = CH₃, OCH₃, NHCOCH₃), thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H₂TDC), and two 4,4'-sulfonyldibenzoic acid derivatives (H₂SDBA, DPSTA). The crystal structures of seven compounds were elucidated by a combination of model building, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED), and Rietveld refinements against powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data. Four new Ga-MOFs that are isoreticular with their aluminum counterparts, i.e. Ga-CAU-10-R (Ga(OH)(m-BDC-R); R = OCH₃, NHCOCH₃), Ga-CAU-11 (Ga(OH)(SDBA)), and Ga-CAU-11-COOH (Ga(OH)(H₂DPSTC)), were obtained. For the first time large single crystals of a MOF crystallizing in the CAU-10 structure type could be isolated, i.e. Ga-CAU-10-OCH₃, which permitted a detailed structural characterization. In addition, the use of 5-methylisophthalic acid and thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid resulted in two new Ga-MOFs denoted Ga-CAU-49 and Ga-CAU-51, respectively, which are not isostructural with any known Al-MOF. The crystal structure of Ga-CAU-49 ([Ga₄(m-HBDC-CH₃)₂(m-BDC-CH₃)₃(OH)₄(H₂O)]) contains an unprecedented rod-shaped inorganic building unit (IBU) of the formula _∞¹{Ga₁₆(OH)₁₈O₆₀}, composed of corner-sharing GaO₅ and GaO₆ polyhedra. In Ga-CAU-51 ([Ga(OH)(C₅H₂O₂S)]) chains of alternating cis and trans corner-sharing GaO₆ polyhedra form the IBU. A detailed characterization of the title compounds was carried out, including nitrogen gas and water vapor sorption measurements. Ga-CAU-11 was the only compound exhibiting porosity toward nitrogen with a type I isotherm, a specific surface area of a_S,BET = 210 m²/g, and a micropore volume of V_mic = 0.09 cm³/g. The new MOF Ga-CAU-51 exhibits exceptional water sorption properties with a reversible S-shaped isotherm and a high uptake around p/p₀ = 0.38 of m_ads = 370 mg/g.

Water Vapor Adsorption on CAU-10-X: Effect of Functional Groups on Adsorption Equilibrium and Mechanisms

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possess unique flexibility of structure and properties, which drives them toward applications as water adsorbents in many emerging technologies, such as adsorptive heat transformation, water harvesting from the air, dehumidification, and desalination. A deep understanding of the surface phenomena is a prerequisite for the target-oriented design of MOFs with the required adsorption properties. In this work, we comprehensively study the effect of functional groups on water adsorption on a series CAU-10-X substituted with both hydrophilic (X = NH2) and hydrophobic (X = NO2) groups in the linker. The adsorption equilibrium is measured at P = 7.6-42 mbar and T = 5-100 °C. The study of water adsorption by a set of mutually complementary physicochemical methods (TG, XRD in situ, FTIR, and 1H NMR relaxometry) elucidates the nature of primary adsorption sites and water adsorption mechanisms.

Adsorber heat exchanger using Al-fumarate beads for heat-pump applications - a transport study

Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), thanks to their type V water adsorption isotherms ("S-Shape") and large water capacities, are considered as potential breakthrough adsorbents for heat-pump applications. In particular, Al(OH)-fumarate could enable efficient regeneration at a lower temperature than silica-gel which would allow us to address the conversion of waste heat at low temperature such as found in data centers. Despite its greater adsorption capacity features, heat and mass transport limitations could jeopardize the potential performance of Al(OH)-fumarate. Heat and mass transport depend on the size of the bodies (mm range), their packing and on the pore structures, i.e. macro-mesopore volumes and sizes. This paper describes the cost-efficient and scalable synthesis and shaping processes of Al(OH)-fumarate beads of various sizes appropriate for use in water Adsorption Heat-Pumps (AHPs). The objective was to study transport limitations (i.e. mass and heat) in practical e beads which meet mechanical stability requirements. Dynamic data at the grain scale was obtained by the Large Temperature Jump method while dynamic data at the adsorber scale was obtained on a heat exchanger filled with more than 1 kg of Al(OH)-fumarate beads. Whereas the binder content had little impact on mass and heat transfer in this study, we found that Knudsen diffusion in mesopores of the grain may be the main limiting factor at the grain scale. At the adsorber scale, heat-transfer within the bed packing as well as to the heat exchanger is likely responsible for the slow adsorption and desorption kinetics which have been observed for very low desorption temperature. Finally, the dynamic aspects of the observed water adsorption isotherm shift with temperature are discussed in light of reported reversible structure modification upon temperature triggered water adsorption-desorption.

Recent Developments in Coating Technologies for Adsorption Heat Pumps: A Review

The use of adsorbent heat pumps as heating and cooling systems is particularly relevant thanks to their ability to exploit low-grade heat (e.g., below 90 °C) from renewable energy sources and waste energy streams with prospective applications in several fields, e.g., industrial and residential. Their development began in the 20th century and is still in full evolution. The great interest in their improvement and optimization was determined by some key factors inherent to their sustainability compared to traditional refrigeration systems (e.g., low electricity consumption and the low environmental impact of the employed refrigerants). Recently, strong efforts have been dedicated to increasing the achievable heating/cooling power density of this technology through the development of innovative adsorbent coating technologies. Indeed, the deposition of thin coatings on the surface of the heat exchanger could reduce the heat transfer resistance existing on the adsorbent material side, thus increasing the overall adsorption dynamics. Three main approaches have been assessed, namely a thick consolidated bed, binder-based composite coatings and in situ directly crystallization coatings. This paper provides a brief overview of some of the main achievements related to adsorbent coating technology developments for adsorption heat pump applications.

Water and Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Interaction toward Utilization

The steep stepwise uptake of water vapor and easy release at low relative pressures and moderate temperatures together with high working capacities make metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) attractive, promising materials for energy efficient applications in adsorption devices for humidity control (evaporation and condensation processes) and heat reallocation (heating and cooling) by utilizing water as benign sorptive and low-grade renewable or waste heat. Emerging MOF-based process applications covered are desiccation, heat pumps/chillers, water harvesting, air conditioning, and desalination. Governing parameters of the intrinsic sorption properties and stability under humid conditions and cyclic operation are identified. Transport of mass and heat in MOF structures, at least as important, is still an underexposed topic. Essential engineering elements of operation and implementation are presented. An update on stability of MOFs in water vapor and liquid systems is provided, and a suite of 18 MOFs are identified for selective use in heat pumps and chillers, while several can be used for air conditioning, water harvesting, and desalination. Most applications with MOFs are still in an exploratory state. An outlook is given for further R&D to realize these applications, providing essential kinetic parameters, performing smart engineering in the design of systems, and conceptual process designs to benchmark them against existing technologies. A concerted effort bridging chemistry, materials science, and engineering is required.

Aqueous Flow Reactor and Vapour-Assisted Synthesis of Aluminium Dicarboxylate Metal-Organic Frameworks with Tuneable Water Sorption Properties

Energy-efficient indoors temperature and humidity control can be realised by using the reversible adsorption and desorption of water in porous materials. Stable microporous aluminium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) present promising water sorption properties for this goal. The development of synthesis routes that make use of available and affordable building blocks and avoid the use of organic solvents is crucial to advance this field. In this work, two scalable synthesis routes under mild reaction conditions were developed for aluminium-based MOFs: (1) in aqueous solutions using a continuous-flow reactor and (2) through the vapour-assisted conversion of solid precursors. Fumaric acid, its methylated analogue mesaconic acid, as well as mixtures of the two were used as linkers to obtain polymorph materials with tuneable water sorption properties. The synthesis conditions determine the crystal structure and either the MIL-53 or MIL-68 type structure with square-grid or kagome-grid topology, respectively, is formed. Fine-tuning resulted in new MOF materials thus far inaccessible through conventional synthesis routes. Furthermore, by varying the linker ratio, the water sorption properties can be continuously adjusted while retaining the sigmoidal isotherm shape advantageous for heat transformation and room climatisation applications.

A Novel Approach for the Determination of Sorption Equilibria and Sorption Enthalpy Used for MOF Aluminium Fumarate with Water

Adsorption chillers offer an environmentally friendly solution for the valorisation of waste or solar heat for cooling demands. A recent application is high efficiency data centre cooling, where heat from CPUs is used to drive the process, providing cooling for auxiliary loads. The metal organic framework aluminium fumarate with water is potentially a suitable material pair for this low temperature driven application. A targeted heat exchanger design is a prerequisite for competitiveness, requiring, amongst other things, a sound understanding of adsorption equilibria and adsorption enthalpy. A novel method is employed for their determination based on small isothermal and isochoric state changes, applied with an apparatus developed initially for volume swing frequency response measurement, to samples with a binder-based adsorbent coating. The adsorption enthalpy is calculated through the Clausius–Clapeyron equation from the obtained slopes of the isotherm and isobar, while the absolute uptake is determined volumetrically. The isotherm confirms the step-like form known for aluminium fumarate, with a temperature dependent inflection point at p rel ≈ 0.25, 0.28 and 0.33 for 30 °C, 40 °C and 60 °C. The calculated differential enthalpy of adsorption is 2.90 ± 0.05 MJ/kg (52.2 ± 1.0 kJ/mol) on average, which is about 10–15% higher than expected by a simple Dubinin approximation.

Effect of Metal and Carbon Nanotube Additives on the Thermal Diffusivity of a Silica Gel-Based Adsorption Bed

This article presents a study of the effect of metal particle and carbon nanotube additives on the thermal diffusivity of a silica-gel-based adsorption bed of an adsorption chiller. The structural properties of silica gel and carbon nanotubes were investigated using the volumetric method of low-pressure nitrogen adsorption. Thermal characteristic tests of the prepared mixtures based on a silica gel with 5 wt% and 15 wt% of aluminum, copper, or carbon nanotubes were carried out. The obtained results show that all the materials used as additives in blends in this study achieved higher thermal diffusivities in comparison with the thermal diffusivity of the parent silica gel. However, the best effect was observed for the mixture with 15 wt% aluminum.

Probing the limits of linker substitution in aluminum MOFs through water vapor sorption studies: mixed-MOFs instead of mixed-linker CAU-23 and MIL-160 materials

Water adsorption and proton conduction of a cobalt(ii) complex assembled by triazine-based polycarboxylate

A new flexible triazine-based polycarboxylate coordination polymer, {[Co3(H3TTHA)2(4,4'-bipy)5(H2O)8]·12H2O}n (1), where H6TTHA = 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine hexaacetic acid, has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, TGA, XRD and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Structural analysis indicates that 1 displays a planar structure with alternate rectangular structures of 22.695 × 11.485 Å2. The investigation of water vapor adsorption shows that the adsorption capacity of 1 is comparable to that of the typical adsorption material of MCM-41 with 73.86% (41.03 mmol g-1) water uptake at 90% relative humidity (RH). Based on the resistance to water and high-density hydrophilic units as well as abundant hydrogen-bonding networks in the complex, the proton conductivities of 1 under different conditions were measured. The results indicate that the proton conductivity values are highly temperature and relative humidity dependent, with the highest conductivity of nearly 10-3 S cm-1 at 353 K and 98% RH. The Arrhenius activation energy derived in the wide temperature range of 293-353 K is 0.32 eV, corresponding to a typical Grotthuss mechanism.

A metal-organic framework for efficient water-based ultra-low-temperature-driven cooling

Efficient use of energy for cooling applications is a very important and challenging field in science. Ultra-low temperature actuated (T_driving < 80 °C) adsorption-driven chillers (ADCs) with water as the cooling agent are one environmentally benign option. The nanoscale metal-organic framework [Al(OH)(C₆H₂O₄S)] denoted CAU-23 was discovered that possess favorable properties, including water adsorption capacity of 0.37 g_H2O/g_sorbent around p/p₀ = 0.3 and cycling stability of at least 5000 cycles. Most importantly the material has a driving temperature down to 60 °C, which allows for the exploitation of yet mostly unused temperature sources and a more efficient use of energy. These exceptional properties are due to its unique crystal structure, which was unequivocally elucidated by single crystal electron diffraction. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to reveal the water adsorption mechanism at the atomic level. With its green synthesis, CAU-23 is an ideal material to realize ultra-low temperature driven ADC devices.

Adsorption-Based Atmospheric Water Harvesting: Impact of Material and Component Properties on System-Level Performance

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is the capture and collection of water that is present in the air either as vapor or small water droplets. AWH has been recognized as a method for decentralized water production, especially in areas where liquid water is physically scarce, or the infrastructure required to bring water from other locations is unreliable or infeasible. The main methods of AWH are fog harvesting, dewing, and utilizing sorbent materials to collect vapor from the air. In this paper, we first distinguish between the geographic/climatic operating regimes of fog harvesting, dewing, and sorbent-based approaches based on temperature and relative humidity (RH). Because utilizing sorbents has the potential to be more widely applicable to areas which are also facing water scarcity, we focus our discussion on this approach. We discuss sorbent materials which have been developed for AWH and the material properties which affect system-level performance. Much of the recent materials development has focused on a single material metric, equilibrium vapor uptake in the material (kg of water uptake per kg of dry adsorbent), as found from the adsorption isotherm. This equilibrium property alone, however, is not a good indicator of the actual performance of the AWH system. Understanding material properties which affect heat and mass transport are equally important in the development of materials and components for AWH, because resistances associated with heat and mass transport in the bulk material dramatically change the system performance. We focus our discussion on modeling a solar thermal-driven system. Performance of a solar-driven AWH system can be characterized by different metrics, including L of water per m² device per day or L of water per kg adsorbent per day. The former metric is especially important for systems driven by low-grade heat sources because the low power density of these sources makes this technology land area intensive. In either case, it is important to include rates in the performance metric to capture the effects of heat and mass transport in the system. We discuss our previously developed modeling framework which can predict the performance of a sorbent material packed into a porous matrix. This model connects mass transport across length scales, considering diffusion both inside a single crystal as well as macroscale geometric parameters, such as the thickness of a composite adsorbent layer. For a simple solar thermal-driven adsorption-based AWH system, we show how this model can be used to optimize the system. Finally, we discuss strategies which have been used to improve heat and mass transport in the design of adsorption systems and the potential for adsorption-based AWH systems for decentralized water supplies.
