Abstract
Using a combination of experiments and calculations, we have gained new insights into the nature of anion-cation interactions in ionic liquids (ILs). An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-derived anion-dependent electrostatic interaction strength scale, determined using XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations, is presented here for 39 different anions, with at least 18 new anions included. Linear correlations of experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL cations with (a) calculated core binding energies (ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations were used to generate high-quality model IL structures followed by single-point density functional theory (DFT) to obtain calculated core binding energies), (b) experimental XPS core-level binding energies for IL anions, and (c) other anion-dependent interaction strength scales led to three main conclusions. First, the effect of different anions on the cation can be related to ground-state interactions. Second, the variations of anion-dependent interactions with the identity of the anion are best rationalized in terms of electrostatic interactions and not occupied valence state/unoccupied valence state interactions or polarizability-driven interactions. Therefore, the XPS-derived anion-dependent interaction strength scale can be explained using a simple electrostatic model based on electrostatic site potentials. Third, anion-probe interactions, irrespective of the identity of the probe, are primarily electrostatic, meaning that our electrostatic interaction strength scale captures some inherent, intrinsic property of anions independent of the probe used to measure the interaction strength scale.

Abstract
We demonstrate a combined experimental and computational approach to probe the electronic structure and atomic environment of an ionic liquid, based on core level binding energies. The 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate [C4C1Im][SCN] ionic liquid was studied using ab initio molecular dynamics, and results were compared against previously published and new experimental X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data. The long-held assumption that initial-state effects in XPS dominate the measured binding energies is proven correct, which validates the established premise that the ground state electronic structure of the ionic liquid can be inferred directly from XPS measurements. A regression model based upon site electrostatic potentials and intramolecular bond lengths is shown to account accurately for variations in core-level binding energies within the ionic liquid, demonstrating the important effect of long-range interactions on the core levels and throwing into question the validity of traditional single ion pair ionic liquid calculations for interpreting XPS data.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have a wide range of applications, owing to their negligible vapor pressure, high electrical conductivity, and low melting point. However, the thermal hazards of ILs and their mixtures are also non-negligible. In this study, the thermal hazards of various binary imidazolium ionic liquids (BIIL) mixtures were investigated. The effects of parent salt components and molar ratios on the thermal decomposition temperature (Td) and flashpoint temperature (Tf) are investigated. It is found that both Td and Tf increase as the proportion of highly thermally stable components in BIIL mixtures increases. Furthermore, the decomposition process of BIIL mixtures can be divided into two stages. For most molar ratios, the Tf of the BIIL mixtures is in the first stage of thermal decomposition. When the proportion of highly thermally stable components is relatively high, Tf is in the second stage of thermal decomposition. The flammability is attributed to the produced combustible gases during the thermal decomposition process. This work would be reasonably expected to provide some guidance for the safety design and application of IL mixtures for engineering.

Abstract
This work aims to explore the gas permeation performance of two newly-designed ionic liquids, [C2mim][CF3BF3] and [C2mim][CF3SO2C(CN)2], in supported ionic liquid membranes (SILM) configuration, as another effort to provide an overall insight on the gas permeation performance of functionalized-ionic liquids with the [C2mim]+ cation. [C2mim][CF3BF3] and [C2mim][CF3SO2C(CN)2] single gas separation performance towards CO2, N2, and CH4 at T = 293 K and T = 308 K were measured using the time-lag method. Assessing the CO2 permeation results, [C2mim][CF3BF3] showed an undermined value of 710 Barrer at 293.15 K and 1 bar of feed pressure when compared to [C2mim][BF4], whereas for the [C2mim][CF3SO2C(CN)2] IL an unexpected CO2 permeability of 1095 Barrer was attained at the same experimental conditions, overcoming the results for the remaining ILs used for comparison. The prepared membranes exhibited diverse permselectivities, varying from 16.9 to 22.2 for CO2/CH4 and 37.0 to 44.4 for CO2/N2 gas pairs. The thermophysical properties of the [C2mim][CF3BF3] and [C2mim][CF3SO2C(CN)2] ILs were also determined in the range of T = 293.15 K up to T = 353.15 K at atmospheric pressure and compared with those for other ILs with the same cation and anion's with similar chemical moieties.

Abstract
With an aim to understand the difference in the behaviour of imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) in terms of the intermolecular interactions, microscopic-structure and dynamics, two DILs, the imidazolium-based 1,9-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)nonane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and the pyrrolidinium-based 1,9-bis(1-methylpyrrolidinium-1-yl)nonane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, have been synthesized and subsequently investigated by exploiting combined steady sate and time resolved fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques. Data obtained for DILs have also been compared with their corresponding mono-cationic counterpart (MILs) to evaluate and understand the distinctive characteristics of the DILs in contrast with the corresponding MILs. Steady state emission and EPR data have revealed that the pyrrolidinium-based DIL is slightly less polar than the imidazolium-based DIL. Temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy decay of two probes, perylene and MPTS (8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate), has been measured in DILs as well as in MILs. Solute-solvent coupling constants obtained from the experimentally measured rotational correlation times with the aid of Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory have indicated appreciable differences in the dynamics of both the solutes on going from MILs to DILs. More interestingly, the outcome of the NMR study has suggested that the alkyl spacer chain in the imidazolium-based DIL exists in the folded form, but the pyrrolidinium-based DIL remains in the straight chain conformation. Inherently, the outcomes of all of these studies have depicted that the microscopic structural organisations in imidazolium and pyrrolidinium-based DILs are different from each other as well as from their respective mono-cationic counterparts.

Abstract
Ionic liquid (IL) valence electronic structure provides key descriptors for understanding and predicting IL properties. The ionisation energies of 60 ILs are measured and the most readily ionised valence state of each IL (the highest occupied molecular orbital, HOMO) is identified using a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron resonant XPS. A structurally diverse range of cations and anions were studied. The cation gave rise to the HOMO for nine of the 60 ILs presented here, meaning it is energetically more favourable to remove an electron from the cation than the anion. The influence of the cation on the anion electronic structure (and vice versa) were established; the electrostatic effects are well understood and demonstrated to be consistently predictable. We used this knowledge to make predictions of both ionisation energy and HOMO identity for a further 516 ILs, providing a very valuable dataset for benchmarking electronic structure calculations and enabling the development of models linking experimental valence electronic structure descriptors to other IL properties, e.g. electrochemical stability. Furthermore, we provide design rules for the prediction of the electronic structure of ILs.

Abstract
The prediction of transport properties of room-temperature ionic liquids from nonpolarizable force field-based simulations has long been a challenge. The uniform charge scaling method has been widely used to improve the agreement with the experiment by incorporating the polarizability and charge transfer effects in an effective manner. While this method improves the performance of the force fields, this prescription is ad hoc in character; further, a quantitative prediction is still not guaranteed. In such cases, the nonbonded interaction parameters too need to be refined, which requires significant effort. In this work, we propose a three-step semiautomated refinement procedure based on (1) atomic site charges obtained from quantum calculations of the bulk condensed phase; (2) quenched Monte Carlo optimizer to shortlist suitable force field candidates, which are then tested using pilot simulations; and (3) manual refinement to further improve the accuracy of the force field. The strategy is designed in a sequential manner with each step improving the accuracy over the previous step, allowing the users to invest the effort commensurate with the desired accuracy of the refined force field. The refinement procedure is applied on N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)ammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (DEME-TFSI), a front-runner as an electrolyte for electric double-layer capacitors and single-molecule-based devices. The transferability of the refined force field is tested on N,N-dimethyl-N-ethyl-N-methoxyethoxyethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (N112,2O2O1-TFSI). The refined force field is found to be better at predicting both structural and transport properties compared to the uniform charge scaling procedure, which showed a discrepancy in the X-ray structure factor. The refined force field showed quantitative agreement with structural (density and X-ray structure factor) and transport properties-diffusion coefficients, ionic conductivity, and shear viscosity over a wide temperature range, building a case for the wide adoption of the procedure.

Abstract
Angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact-angle measurements guided by a signal attenuation model are utilized to extract molar composition and anion enrichment in the vacuum interface of a binary ionic liquid mixture, having a common quaternary ammonium cation and two different anions. By using the intensity ratio of the F1s peaks belonging to the two different anions recorded at the full electron take-off angle range, from 0° to 80°, we have determined that only a fractionally covered and anion enriched surface layer can predict the AR-XPS data, which is also consistent with surface tension measurements. Moreover, the more bulky and non-spherical anion enrichment is evident even at the conventional and the so assumed bulk sensitive take-off angle of 0°. This methodology provides a surface enrichment factor of the molecular ions and clearly serves as an experimental evidence for recently debated surface layering and/or island structure in ionic liquid systems.

Abstract
We reported a new perspective on the correlation between the electronic structure of an ionic liquid (IL)-based electrolyte probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the transport properties analyzed by impedance spectroscopy. We highlighted the core level chemical shifts of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) (C1C6ImTFSI), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (C1C6ImFSI), and 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C1C1C6ImTFSI) laden with LiTFSI salt and vinylene carbonate (VC) or fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) with regard to the transport properties of cations and anions. We pointed out based on detailed binding energy shift analyses a clear effect of the anion on the local organization of Li+ ions. The significant peak shift in the case of C1C6ImTFSI laden with LiTFSI corroborates the formation of [Li(TFSI)2]- complexes. On the contrary, the lower amplitude of the binding energy shift of C1C6ImFSI for both anion- and cation-related peaks indicates that the electronic distribution around the cation and the anion is not affected when the LiTFSI salt is added, which plays a strong role in the ion dynamics (lower viscosity) of the electrolyte. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) result supports the preponderant role of imidazolium ionic liquid based on FSI anion to form an electrolyte less prone to form ionic complexes. The methylation of the imidazolium cation contributes to the reduction of the interaction between the C1C1C6Im cation and TFSI anion, while additives VC and FEC contribute to the change of the alkyl configuration in C1C6Im cation, leading to the modification of the macroscopic properties of the ILs.

Abstract
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to investigate the impact of methylation on the electronic environment of pyridinium cations. Because of the electron-donating effect of the methyl group, there is a significant increase in electron density on the cationic nitrogen. The shift of the N 1s binding energy is inversely proportional to the anion basicity. The methylation position on the electronic environment of the cationic nitrogen is investigated. The N 1s binding energy follows the trend: 1-octylpyridinium > 1-octyl-3-picolinium > 1-octyl-4-picolinium > 1-octyl-2-picolinium, which is in good agreement with the cation acidity. The increase in the inductive effect subsequently weakens the cation-anion interactions through charge transfer from the anion to the cation, causing a subtle change in the electronic environment of the anion. Such an effect is noticeably reflected in the Br 3d binding energy. It shows that the Br 3d5/2 binding energy of 1-octyl-2-picolinium bromide is 0.2 eV lower than that of 1-octylpyridinium bromide.

Abstract
Using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS), we investigate the topmost nanometers of various binary ionic liquid (IL) mixtures at different temperatures in the liquid state. The mixtures consist of ILs with the same [PF6 ]- anion but two different cations, namely 3-methyl-1-(3,3,4,4,4-pentafluorobutyl)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [PFBMIm][PF6 ], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C4 C1 Im][PF6 ], with 10, 25, 50 and 75 mol % content of [PFBMIm][PF6 ]. We observe a preferential enrichment of the fluorinated chain in the topmost layer, relative to the bulk composition, which is most pronounced for the lowest content of [PFBMIm][PF6 ]. Upon cooling the mixtures stepwise from 95 °C until surface charging effects in XPS indicate solidification, we observe a pronounced increase in surface enrichment of the fluorinated chain with decreasing temperature in the liquid state. In contrast to the mixtures with lower [PFBMIm][PF6 ] contents, cooling the 75 mol % mixture additionally shows an abrupt decrease of the fluorinated chain signal before complete solidification occurs, which is assigned to partial precipitation effects.

The Role of Charge Transfer in the Formation of Type I Deep Eutectic Solvent-Analogous Ionic Liquid Mixtures. Molecules 2019; 24:molecules24203687. Abstract
It was recently shown that tetramethylammonium chloride presented negative deviations to ideality when mixed with tetraethylammonium chloride or tetrapropylammonium chloride, leading to a strong decrease of the melting points of these salt mixtures, in a behavior akin to that observed in the formation of deep eutectic solvents. To better rationalize this unexpected melting point depression between two structurally similar compounds devoid of dominant hydrogen bonding capability, new solid–liquid equilibria data for tetramethylammonium-based systems were measured and analyzed in this work. Molecular dynamics was used to show that the strong negative deviations from ideality presented by these systems arise from a synergetic share of the chloride ions. A transfer of chloride ions seems to occur from the bigger cation in the mixture (which possesses a more disperse charge) to the smaller cation (tetramethylammonium), resembling the formation of metal–chloride complexes in type I deep eutectic solvents. This rearrangement of the charged species leads to an energetic stabilization of both components in the mixture, inducing the negative deviations to the ideality observed. The conclusions presented herein emphasize the often-neglected contribution of charge delocalization in deep eutectic solvents formation and its applicability toward the design of new ionic liquid mixtures.

Abstract
For equimolar mixtures of ionic liquids with imidazolium‐based cations of very different electronic structure, we observe very pronounced surface enrichment effects by angle‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For a mixture with the same anion, that is, 1‐methyl‐3‐octylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate+1,3‐di(methoxy)imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8C1Im][PF6]+[(MeO)2Im][PF6]), we find a strong enrichment of the octyl chain‐containing [C8C1Im]+ cation and a corresponding depletion of the [(MeO)2Im]+ cation in the topmost layer. For a mixture with different cations and anions, that is, [C8C1Im][Tf2N]+[(MeO)2Im][PF6], we find both surface enrichment of the [C8C1Im]+ cation and the [Tf2N]− (bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) anion, while [(MeO)2Im]+ and [PF6]− are depleted from the surface. We propose that the observed behavior in these mixtures is due to a lowering of the surface tension by the enriched components. Interestingly, we observe pronounced differences in the chemical shifts of the imidazolium ring signals of the [(MeO)2Im]+ cations as compared to the non‐functionalized cations. Calculations of the electronic structure and the intramolecular partial charge distribution of the cations contribute to interpreting these shifts for the two different cations.

Abstract
The extent of charge transfer between the cation and the anion in a room-temperature ionic liquid depends on the basicity of the anion. Ion charges determined in the condensed state via density functional theory calculations capture this effect rather well, and charges derived in such a manner have been employed in force field-based molecular dynamics simulations to quantitatively reproduce several physical properties of the liquids. However, the issue of transferability of cation charges in mixtures of ionic liquids, say with one type of cation and two different anion types needs to be addressed. Herein, we demonstrate that the cation charge in such a mixture varies linearly with anion composition, a result that ties in rather well with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments. The variation in cation charge with bulk anion composition is shown to be a result of changes in its coordination environment. Cations surrounded by a higher proportion of more basic anions possess lower charges than those surrounded by less basic anions. Time scales for the exchange of anion types for the occupation of hydrogen bonding sites around the cation have been determined and are seen to be constituted by three processes-breakage of existing hydrogen bond, diffusion to the hydrogen bonding site and displacement of the incumbent anion from its site in the cation coordination shell. These time scales explain the differences observed between infrared and NMR spectroscopic experiments in ionic liquid mixtures rather well.

Abstract
AbstractIonic liquids are attractive alternatives to molecular solvents as they have many favourable physical properties and can produce different organic reaction outcomes compared to molecular solvents. Thus far, interactions between the ionic liquid components and specific sites (such as charged centres, lone pairs and π systems) on the reagents and transition state have been identified as affecting reaction outcome; a comprehensive understanding of these interactions is necessary to allow prediction of ionic liquid solvent effects. This manuscript summarises our recent progress in the development of a framework for predicting the effect of an ionic liquid solvent on the outcome of organic processes. There will be a particular focus on the importance of the different interactions between the ionic liquid components and the species along the reaction coordinate that are responsible for the changes in reaction outcome observed in the cases described.

Abstract
We investigate eight 1-alkylpyridinium-based ionic liquids of the form [Cn Py][A] by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electronic environment of each element of the ionic liquids is analyzed. In particular, a reliable fitting model is developed for the C 1s region that applies to each of the ionic liquids. This model allows the accurate charge correction of binding energies and the determination of reliable and reproducible binding energies for each ionic liquid. Shake-up/off phenomena are determinedfor both C 1s and N 1s spectra. The electronic interaction between cations and anions is investigated for both simple ionic liquids and an example of an ionic-liquid mixture; the effect of the anion on the electronic environment of the cation is also explored. Throughout the study, a detailed comparison is made between [C8 Py][A] and analogues including 1-octyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium- ([C8 C1 Pyrr][A]), and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium- ([C8 C1 Im][A]) based samples, where X is common to all ionic liquids.
