First Measurement of η Meson Production in Neutrino Interactions on Argon with MicroBooNE

We present a measurement of η production from neutrino interactions on argon with the MicroBooNE detector. The modeling of resonant neutrino interactions on argon is a critical aspect of the neutrino oscillation physics program being carried out by the DUNE and Short Baseline Neutrino programs. η production in neutrino interactions provides a powerful new probe of resonant interactions, complementary to pion channels, and is particularly suited to the study of higher-order resonances beyond the Δ(1232). We measure a flux-integrated cross section for neutrino-induced η production on argon of 3.22±0.84(stat)±0.86(syst) 10^{-41}  cm^{2}/nucleon. By demonstrating the successful reconstruction of the two photons resulting from η production, this analysis enables a novel calibration technique for electromagnetic showers in GeV accelerator neutrino experiments.

A randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of laparoscopic-guided transversus abdominis plane block in patients undergoing laparoscopic IPOM plus

INTRODUCTION

Ventral hernia repairs, particularly laparoscopic ventral hernia repair (LVHR), have become common procedures among general surgeons worldwide. Despite the benefits of LVHR, acute postoperative pain remains a significant concern. Transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks have been employed to alleviate postoperative pain in various laparoscopic procedures. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of laparoscopic-guided TAP block in laparoscopic IPOM plus and its impact on postoperative pain and analgesic requirements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary care center in India involving 72 patients undergoing laparoscopic IPOM plus. Patients were randomized into two groups: Group I received laparoscopic-guided TAP block, while Group II received standard general anesthesia without TAP block. Pain scores were assessed at 6, 12, and 24 h postoperatively using the numerical rating scale. Postoperative analgesic requirements were also recorded.

RESULTS

Group I demonstrated significantly lower pain scores at 6 and 24 h postoperatively compared to Group II. The need for additional analgesics was significantly lower in Group I (13.8%) compared to Group II (72.2%). There were no significant differences in age, BMI, duration of surgery, or other demographic characteristics between the two groups.

CONCLUSION

The findings of this randomized controlled trial demonstrate the effectiveness of laparoscopic-guided TAP blocks in reducing postoperative pain and analgesic requirements after laparoscopic IPOM plus.

Dosimetric and radiobiological comparison of IMRT, VMAT, and helical tomotherapy planning techniques in hippocampal sparing whole brain radiotherapy with simultaneous integrated boost for multiple brain metastases

To compare treatment planning and dosimetric outcomes for hippocampal sparing whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) with the simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) in brain metastasis (BM) patients using tumour control probability (TCP) and normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) formalism between IMRT, VMAT, and HT techniques. In this retrospective study, the treatment data of 20 BM patients who typically received whole brain radiation with SIB treatment were used. Prescription doses of 30 Gy and 36 Gy was delivered in 10 fractions for WBRT and SIB, respectively. Niemierko and LKB models were applied for calculating TCP and NTCP. All the plans were evaluated for the RTOG 0933 protocol criteria and found acceptable. Additionally, the homogeneity of the PTV boost is 0.07 ± 0.01, 0.1 ± 0.04, and 0.08 ± 0.02 for IMRT, VMAT, and HT, respectively (P < 0.05). The percentage of TCP for the PTV boost was 99.99 ± 0.003, 99.98 ± 0.004, and 99.99 ± 0.002 of IMRT, VMAT, and HT, respectively, (P < 0.005). The NTCP value of the lenses was higher with the VMAT plan as compared to IMRT and HT Plans. The hippocampal NTCP values are equal in all three planning proficiencies. The techniques like IMRT, VMAT, and HT can reduce the dose received by hippocampus to the dosimetric threshold during the delivery of WBRT with hippocampal sparing and can simultaneously boost multiple metastases. Overall, the high-quality dose distribution, TCP, and NTCP comparison between all three planning techniques show that the HT technique has better results when compared to the VMAT and IMRT techniques.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Electron-Positron and Neutral-Pion Final States with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying into νe^{+}e^{-} or νπ^{0} final states in a liquid-argon time projection chamber using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector. The data were recorded synchronously with the NuMI neutrino beam from Fermilab's main injector corresponding to a total exposure of 7.01×10^{20} protons on target. We set upper limits at the 90% confidence level on the mixing parameter |U_{μ4}|^{2} in the mass ranges 10≤m_{HNL}≤150  MeV for the νe^{+}e^{-} channel and 150≤m_{HNL}≤245  MeV for the νπ^{0} channel, assuming |U_{e4}|^{2}=|U_{τ4}|^{2}=0. Red Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Dimeric H-Aggregates of Acridine Orange by Chiral Induction

Understanding the mechanism of chirality transfer from a chiral surface to an achiral molecule is essential for designing molecular systems with tunable chiroptical properties. These aspects are explored herein using l- and d-isomers of alkyl valine amphiphiles, which self-assemble in water as nanofibers possessing a negative surface charge. An achiral chromophore, acridine orange, upon electrostatic binding on these surfaces displays mirror-imaged bisignated circular dichroism and red-emitting circularly polarized luminescence signals with a high dissymmetry factor. Experimental and computational investigations establish that the chiroptical properties emerge from surface-bound asymmetric H-type dimers of acridine orange, further supported by fluorescence lifetime imaging studies. Specifically, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations show that the experimentally observed chiral signatures have their origin in van der Waals interactions between acridine orange dimers and the amphiphile head groups as well as in the extent of solvent exposure of the chromophore.

Liquid-Vapor Interface of Aqueous Ethylene Glycol Solutions: A Molecular Dynamics Study

While the organic constituent in an aqueous binary solution enriches its liquid-vapor (l-v) interface, the extent of enrichment can depend nonlinearly on its mole fraction. A microscopic quantification and rationalization of this behavior are crucial to understand the dependence of properties such as surface tension and evaporation rate of the solution on its composition. Extensive all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous ethylene glycol (EG) solutions show that the composition of the solution at the l-v interface deviates the most from that in the bulk solution at an EG mole fraction of 0.3. The population of EG molecules with their central C-C dihedral in the gauche conformation was found to be higher at the l-v interface than that in the bulk solution to facilitate the orientation of its hydrophobic methyl groups toward the vapor phase. Free energy calculations reveal that in dilute EG solutions, an EG molecule is most stable at the l-v interface. The behavior of vapor pressure in aqueous EG solutions is ideal and follows Raoult's law, while in contrast, the aqueous solution of dimethyl sulfoxide does not. A rationale for the same is provided through the orientational distribution of interfacial water molecules in the respective solutions.

Lipase A from Bacillus subtilis: Substrate Binding, Conformational Dynamics, and Signatures of a Lid

Protein-ligand binding studies are crucial for understanding the molecular basis of biological processes and for further advancing industrial biocatalysis and drug discovery. Using computational modeling and molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the binding of a butyrate ester substrate to the lipase A (LipA) enzyme of Bacillus subtilis. Besides obtaining a close agreement of the binding free energy with the experimental value, the study reveals a remarkable reorganization of the catalytic triad upon substrate binding, leading to increased essential hydrogen bond populations. The investigation shows the distortion of the oxyanion hole in both the substrate-bound and unbound states of LipA and highlights the strengthening of the same in the tetrahedral intermediate complex. Principal component analysis of the unbound ensemble reveals the dominant motion in LipA to be the movement of Loop-1 (Tyr129-Arg142) between two states that cover and uncover the active site, mirroring that of a lid prevalent in several lipases. This lid-like motion of Loop-1 is also supported by its tendency to spontaneously open up at an oil-water interface. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the impact of substrate binding on the structure, flexibility, and conformational dynamics of the LipA enzyme.

Noncovalent interaction guided selectivity of haloaromatic isomers in a flexible porous coordination polymer

Porous, supramolecular structures exhibit preferential encapsulation of guest molecules, primarily by means of differences in the order of (noncovalent) interactions. The encapsulation preferences can be for geometry (dimension and shape) and the chemical nature of the guest. While geometry-based sorting is relatively straightforward using advanced porous materials, designing a "chemical nature" specific host is not. To introduce "chemical specificity", the host must retain an accessible and complementary recognition site. In the case of a supramolecular, porous coordination polymer (PCP) [Zn(o-phen)(ndc)] (o-phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, ndc: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate) host, equipped with an adaptable recognition pocket, we have discovered that the preferential encapsulation of a haloaromatic isomer is not only for dimension and shape, but also for the "chemical nature" of the guest. This selectivity, i.e., preference for the dimension, shape and chemical nature, is not guided by any complementary recognition site, which is commonly required for "chemical specificity". Insights from crystal structures and computational studies unveil that the differences in the different types of noncovalent host-guest interaction strengths, acting in a concerted fashion, yield the unique selectivity.

Supramolecular Polymerization of a Pyrene-Substituted Diamide and Its Ensemble of Kinetically Trapped Configurations

The prevalence of kinetically accessible states in supramolecular polymerization pathways has been exploited to control the growth of the polymer and thereby to obtain niche morphologies. Yet, these pathways themselves are not easily amenable for experimental delineation but could potentially be understood through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Herein, we report an extensive investigation of the self-assembly of pyrene-substituted diamide (PDA) monomers in solution, conducted using atomistic MD simulations and advanced sampling methods. We characterize such kinetic and thermodynamic states as well as the transition pathways and free energy barriers between them. PDA forms a dimeric segment with the N- to C-termini vectors of the diamide moieties arranged either in parallel or anti-parallel fashion. This characteristic, combined with the molecule's torsional flexibility and pyrene-solvent interactions, presents an ensemble of molecular configurations contributing to the kinetic state in the polymerization pathway. While this ensemble primarily comprises short oligomers containing a mix of anti-parallel and parallel dimeric segments, the thermodynamic state of the assembly is a right-handed polymer featuring parallel ones only. Our work thus offers an approach by which the landscape of any specific supramolecular polymerization can be deconstructed.

Understanding the Anomalous Diffusion of Water in Aqueous Electrolytes Using Machine Learned Potentials

The diffusivity of water in aqueous cesium iodide solutions is larger than that in neat liquid water and vice versa for sodium chloride solutions. Such peculiar ion-specific behavior, called anomalous diffusion, is not reproduced in typical force field based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations due to inadequate treatment of ion-water interactions. Herein, this hurdle is tackled by using machine learned atomic potentials (MLPs) trained on data from density functional theory calculations. MLP based atomistic MD simulations of aqueous salt solutions reproduce experimentally determined thermodynamic, structural, dynamical, and transport properties, including their varied trends in water diffusivities across salt concentration. This enables an examination of their intermolecular structure to unravel the microscopic underpinnings of the differences in their transport properties. While both ions in CsI solutions contribute to the faster diffusion of water molecules, the competition between the heavy retardation by Na ions and the slight acceleration by Cl ions in NaCl solutions reduces their water diffusivity.

First Double-Differential Measurement of Kinematic Imbalance in Neutrino Interactions with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated double-differential quasielasticlike neutrino-argon cross sections, which have been made using the Booster Neutrino Beam and the MicroBooNE detector at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data are presented as a function of kinematic imbalance variables which are sensitive to nuclear ground-state distributions and hadronic reinteraction processes. We find that the measured cross sections in different phase-space regions are sensitive to different nuclear effects. Therefore, they enable the impact of specific nuclear effects on the neutrino-nucleus interaction to be isolated more completely than was possible using previous single-differential cross section measurements. Our results provide precision data to help test and improve neutrino-nucleus interaction models. They further support ongoing neutrino-oscillation studies by establishing phase-space regions where precise reaction modeling has already been achieved.

First Measurement of Quasielastic Λ Baryon Production in Muon Antineutrino Interactions in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present the first measurement of the cross section of Cabibbo-suppressed Λ baryon production, using data collected with the MicroBooNE detector when exposed to the neutrinos from the main injector beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data analyzed correspond to 2.2×10^{20} protons on target running in neutrino mode, and 4.9×10^{20} protons on target running in anti-neutrino mode. An automated selection is combined with hand scanning, with the former identifying five candidate Λ production events when the signal was unblinded, consistent with the GENIE prediction of 5.3±1.1 events. Several scanners were employed, selecting between three and five events, compared with a prediction from a blinded Monte Carlo simulation study of 3.7±1.0 events. Restricting the phase space to only include Λ baryons that decay above MicroBooNE's detection thresholds, we obtain a flux averaged cross section of 2.0_{-1.7}^{+2.2}×10^{-40}  cm^{2}/Ar, where statistical and systematic uncertainties are combined.

Structurally Induced Chirality of an Achiral Chromophore on Self-Assembled Nanofibers: A Twist Makes It Chiral

The surface domains of self-assembled amphiphiles are well-organized and can perform many physical, chemical, and biological functions. Here, we present the significance of chiral surface domains of these self-assemblies in transferring chirality to achiral chromophores. These aspects are probed using l- and d-isomers of alkyl alanine amphiphiles which self-assemble in water as nanofibers, possessing a negative surface charge. When bound on these nanofibers, positively charged cyanine dyes (CY524 and CY600), each having two quinoline rings bridged by conjugated double bonds, show contrasting chiroptical features. Interestingly, CY600 displays a bisignated circular dichroic (CD) signal with mirror-image symmetry, while CY524 is CD silent. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the model cylindrical micelles (CM) derived from the two isomers exhibit surface chirality and the chromophores are buried as monomers in mirror-imaged pockets on their surfaces. The monomeric nature of template-bound chromophores and their binding reversibility are established by concentration- and temperature-dependent spectroscopies and calorimetry. On the CM, CY524 displays two equally populated conformers with opposite sense, whereas CY600 is present as two pairs of twisted conformers in each of which one is in excess, due to differences in weak dye-amphiphile hydrogen bonding interactions. Infrared and NMR spectroscopies support these findings. Reduction of electronic conjugation caused by the twist establishes the two quinoline rings as independent entities. On-resonance coupling between the transition dipoles of these units generates bisignated CD signals with mirror-image symmetry. The results presented herein provide insight on the little-known structurally induced chirality of achiral chromophores through transfer of chiral surface information.

Endobronchial lesion in an adolescent with hemoptysis biopsy or not to biopsy?

An 11-year-old girl was brought with complaints of recurrent massive hemoptysis. A computerized tomography (CT) of the chest showed ground glass opacities on the right lower lobe, and a CT angiography showed hypertrophied right pulmonary artery. Flexible bronchoscopy revealed a sessile friable lesion in the right lower lobe, raising suspicion of either a tumor or a vascular malformation. An endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) revealed a cystic lesion in the submucous plane, with vascularity noted on Doppler mode. This confirmed the diagnosis of bronchial Dieulafoy disease. A bronchial angiography revealed a vascular malformation overlying the lesion with a bronchopulmonary shunt, which was ligated. This case demonstrates the importance of EBUS in endobronchial lesions, to avoid biopsy of a vascular malformation.

Pertussis in India: Past, Present, and Future

While vaccines have markedly reduced the incidence of pertussis, a resurgence has occurred in many countries. Until recently, pertussis has not been recognized as an important public health challenge in India due to its successful infant immunization program. However, India still accounts for a large proportion of the world's cases, and increasing reports of pertussis in other countries and in neonates have regenerated interest in pertussis among Indian authorities. The Global Pertussis Initiative (GPI) Annual Meeting was held virtually in October 2020, in part, to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology and disease burden of pertussis and to explore opportunities to improve its prevention in India. There was a consensus that pertussis cases are being underestimated in India due to multiple factors, such as a reliance on passive surveillance and diagnostic challenges. India offers both whole-cell pertussis and acellular pertussis vaccines, but vaccine coverage is inconsistent across regions due to differences in vaccine availability, access to health care, and regional administrative challenges. This report summarizes the outcomes and considers the key clinical implications of this meeting. The GPI agreed that active surveillance of pertussis in India would be optimal and recommended several studies, including serosurveillance among women of reproductive age to assess the prevalence of recent pertussis infection and to enable policy changes that will enhance the rational use of acellular and whole-cell vaccines. It also recommended engagement with nongovernmental organizations in order to encourage pregnancy immunization in the public sector. To achieve effective control of pertussis in the future, the GPI recognizes there are opportunities to characterize the burden of pertussis in India appropriately and increase vaccination coverage in multiple age groups.

Differentiating Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) and Its Mimics - A Single-Center Experience From a Tropical Setting

OBJECTIVES

Identifying clinical and laboratory indicators that differentiate multisystem inflam-matory syndrome in children (MIS-C) apart from other febrile diseases in a tropical hospital setting.

METHODS

Review of hospital records done in a tertiary care exclusive children's hospital for children admitted from April, 2020 till June, 2021. Laboratory values, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) serological status, and clinical signs and symptoms of patients with MIS-C, and those with similar presentations were analyzed.

RESULTS

114 children fulfilled the inclusion criteria (age group of 1 mo-18 y) for whom a diagnosis of MIS-C was considered in the emergency room based on the clinical features. Among them, 64 children had the final diagnosis of MIS-C, and the remaining 50 children had confirmatory evidence of infections mimicking MIS-C such as enteric fever, scrub typhus, dengue and appendicitis.

CONCLUSION

Older age group, presence of muco-cutaneous symptoms, very high C-reactive protein, neutrophilic leukocytosis, abdominal pain and absence of hepatosplenomegaly favor a diagnosis of MIS-C.

Revisiting the Burden Borne by Fumarase: Enzymatic Hydration of an Olefin

Fumarate hydratase (FH) is a remarkable catalyst that decreases the free energy of the catalyzed reaction by 30 kcal mol^-1, much larger than most exceptional enzymes with extraordinary catalytic rates. Two classes of FH are observed in nature: class-I and class-II, which have different folds, yet catalyze the same reversible hydration/dehydration reaction of the dicarboxylic acids fumarate/malate, with equal efficiencies. Using class-I FH from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Methanocaldococcus jannaschii (Mj) as a model along with comparative analysis with the only other available class-I FH structure from Leishmania major (Lm), we provide insights into the molecular mechanism of catalysis in this class of enzymes. The structure of MjFH apo-protein has been determined, revealing that large intersubunit rearrangements occur across apo- and holo-protein forms, with a largely preorganized active site for substrate binding. Site-directed mutagenesis of active site residues, kinetic analysis, and computational studies, including density functional theory (DFT) and natural population analysis, together show that residues interacting with the carboxylate group of the substrate play a pivotal role in catalysis. Our study establishes that an electrostatic network at the active site of class-I FH polarizes the substrate fumarate through interactions with its carboxylate groups, thereby permitting an easier addition of a water molecule across the olefinic bond. We propose a mechanism of catalysis in FH that occurs through transition-state stabilization involving the distortion of the electronic structure of the substrate olefinic bond mediated by the charge polarization of the bound substrate at the enzyme active site.

First Constraints on Light Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Combined Appearance and Disappearance Searches with the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for eV-scale sterile neutrino oscillations in the MicroBooNE liquid argon detector, simultaneously considering all possible appearance and disappearance effects within the 3+1 active-to-sterile neutrino oscillation framework. We analyze the neutrino candidate events for the recent measurements of charged-current ν_{e} and ν_{μ} interactions in the MicroBooNE detector, using data corresponding to an exposure of 6.37×10^{20} protons on target from the Fermilab booster neutrino beam. We observe no evidence of light sterile neutrino oscillations and derive exclusion contours at the 95% confidence level in the plane of the mass-squared splitting Δm_{41}^{2} and the sterile neutrino mixing angles θ_{μe} and θ_{ee}, excluding part of the parameter space allowed by experimental anomalies. Cancellation of ν_{e} appearance and ν_{e} disappearance effects due to the full 3+1 treatment of the analysis leads to a degeneracy when determining the oscillation parameters, which is discussed in this Letter and will be addressed by future analyses.

Building Robust Machine Learning Models for Small Chemical Science Data: The Case of Shear Viscosity of Fluids

Shear viscosity, though being a fundamental property of all fluids, is computationally expensive to calculate from equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Recently, Machine Learning (ML) methods have been used to augment molecular simulations in many contexts, thus showing promise to estimate viscosity too in a relatively inexpensive manner. However, ML methods face significant challenges - such as overfitting, when the size of the data set is small, as is the case with viscosity. In this work, we train seven ML models to predict the shear viscosity of a Lennard-Jones (LJ) fluid, with particular emphasis on addressing issues arising from a small data set. Specifically, the issues related to model selection, performance estimation and uncertainty quantification were investigated. First, we show that the widely used performance estimation procedure of using a single unseen data set shows a wide variability small data sets. In this context, the common practice of using Cross validation (CV) to select the hyperparameters (model selection) can be adapted to estimate the generalization error (performance estimation) as well. We compare two simple CV procedures for their ability to do both model selection and performance estimation, and find that k-fold CV based procedure shows a lower variance of error estimates. We discuss the role of performance metrics in training and evaluation and propose a method to rank the ML models based on multiple metrics. Finally, two methods for uncertainty quantification - Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and ensemble method - were used to estimate the uncertainty on individual predictions. The uncertainty estimates from GPR were also used to construct an applicability domain using which the ML models provided even more reliable predictions on an independent viscosity data set generated in this work. Overall, the procedures prescribed in this work, together, lead to robust ML models for small data sets.

A Dosimetric and Radiobiological Comparison of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy and Helical Tomotherapy Planning Techniques in Synchronous Bilateral Breast Cancer

OBJECTIVE

The present investigation intends to identify the optimal radiotherapy treatment plan for synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) using dosimetric and radiobiological indexes for three techniques, namely, helical tomotherapy (HT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT).

METHODS

Twenty SBBC treated female patients treatment planning data (average age of 52.5 years) were used as the sample for the present study. Three different plans were created using 50 Gy in a 25 fraction dose regime. Poisson, Niemierko, and LKB models were applied for calculating normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) and tumour control probability (TCP).

RESULT

The target average dose comparison between IMRT with HT and VMAT with HT was highly substantial (P=0.001). The percentage of TCP for IMRT, VMAT, and HT in the Poisson model were 93.70±0.28, 94.68±0.30, and 94.34±0.57, respectively (p<0.05). The dose maximum was lower for the whole lung in the HT plan, with an average dose of 49.31Gy±3.9 (p<0.009). The NTCP values of both Niemierko and LKB models were lower for the heart, lungs, and liver for the IMRT plan.

CONCLUSION

The sparing of organs at risk was higher in the HT plan dosimetrically, and the TCP was higher in the three techniques. The comparison between the three techniques shows that the IMRT and HT techniques could be considered for treating SBBC.

Molecular simulations explain the exceptional thermal stability, solvent tolerance and solubility of protein-polymer surfactant bioconjugates in ionic liquids

Proteins complexed electrostatically with polymer surfactants constitute a viscous liquid by themselves, called the solvent-free protein liquid (SFPL). A solution of SFPL in a room temperature ionic liquid (PS-IL) offers the protein hyperthermal stability, higher solubility and greater IL tolerance. A generic understanding of these protein-polymer systems is obtained herein through extensive atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of three different enzymes (lipase A, lysozyme and myoglobin) under various conditions. Along with increased intra-protein hydrogen bonding, the surfactant coating around the proteins imparts greater thermal stability, and also aids in screening protein-IL interactions, endowing them IL tolerance. The reduced surface polarity of the protein-polymer bioconjugate and hydrogen bonding between the ethylene glycol groups of the surfactant and the IL cation contribute to the facile solvation of the protein in its PS-IL form. The results presented here rationalize several experimental observations and will aid in the improved design of such hybrid materials for sustainable catalysis.

Conformer Selection Upon Dilution with Water: The Fascinating Case of Liquid Ethylene Glycol Studied via Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The aqueous solution of ethylene glycol (EG) is a binary liquid mixture that displays rich conformational and structural behaviour, which has not yet been adequately explored through atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Herein, employing an accurate force field for EG, several physical properties of this solution are calculated to be in quantitative agreement with experimental data. While 79 % of molecules in neat liquid EG exist with their central OCCO dihedral in the gauche state, this fraction increases to 89 % in the dilute aqueous solution, largely in response to the increase in the static dielectric constant of the solution from that of neat liquid EG. The increase in gauche conformers increases the mean dipole moment of EG molecules in the solution which is additionally contributed by specific conformational states of the two terminal HOCC dihedral angles.

Scintillation light detection in the 6-m drift-length ProtoDUNE Dual Phase liquid argon TPC

DUNE is a dual-site experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies, neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. ProtoDUNE Dual Phase (DP) is a 6  ×  6  ×  6 m 3 liquid argon time-projection-chamber (LArTPC) that recorded cosmic-muon data at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2019-2020 as a prototype of the DUNE Far Detector. Charged particles propagating through the LArTPC produce ionization and scintillation light. The scintillation light signal in these detectors can provide the trigger for non-beam events. In addition, it adds precise timing capabilities and improves the calorimetry measurements. In ProtoDUNE-DP, scintillation and electroluminescence light produced by cosmic muons in the LArTPC is collected by photomultiplier tubes placed up to 7 m away from the ionizing track. In this paper, the ProtoDUNE-DP photon detection system performance is evaluated with a particular focus on the different wavelength shifters, such as PEN and TPB, and the use of Xe-doped LAr, considering its future use in giant LArTPCs. The scintillation light production and propagation processes are analyzed and a comparison of simulation to data is performed, improving understanding of the liquid argon properties.

Gate Opening without Volume Change Triggers Cooperative Gas Interactions, Underpins an Isotherm Step in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Three halogenated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) reported recently exhibited a second step in their CO₂ gas adsorption isotherms. The emergence of halogen-bonding interactions beyond a threshold gas pressure between the framework halogen and the CO₂ guest was conjectured to be the underlying reason for the additional step in the isotherm. Our investigation employing periodic density functional theory calculations did not show significant interactions between the halogen and CO₂ molecules. Further, using a combination of DFT-based ab initio molecular dynamics and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the increased separation of framework nitrate pairs facing each other across the pore channel enables the accommodation of an additional CO₂ molecule which is further stabilized by cooperative interactions─an observation that facilely explains the second isotherm step. The increased separation between the nitrate groups can occur without any lattice expansion, consistent with experiments. The results point to a structural feature to achieve this isotherm step in MOFs that neither possess large pores nor exhibit large-scale structural changes such as breathing.

Tailoring a robust Al-MOF for trapping C2H6 and C2H2 towards efficient C2H4 purification from quaternary mixtures

Light hydrocarbon separation is considered one of the most industrially challenging and desired chemical separation processes and is highly essential in polymer and chemical industries. Among them, separating ethylene (C₂H₄) from C2 hydrocarbon mixtures such as ethane (C₂H₆), acetylene (C₂H₂), and other natural gas elements (CO₂, CH₄) is of paramount importance and poses significant difficulty. We demonstrate such separations using an Al-MOF synthesised earlier as a non-porous material, but herein endowed with hierarchical porosity created under microwave conditions in an equimolar water/ethanol solution. The material possessing a large surface area (793 m² g⁻¹) exhibits an excellent uptake capacity for major industrial hydrocarbons in the order of C₂H₂ > C₂H₆ > CO₂ > C₂H₄ > CH₄ under ambient conditions. It shows an outstanding dynamic breakthrough separation of ethylene (C₂H₄) not only for a binary mixture (C₂H₆/C₂H₄) but also for a quaternary combination (C₂H₄/C₂H₆/C₂H₂/CO₂ and C₂H₄/C₂H₆/C₂H₂/CH₄) of varying concentrations. The detailed separation/purification mechanism was unveiled by gas adsorption isotherms, mixed-gas adsorption calculations, selectivity estimations, advanced computer simulations such as density functional theory (DFT), grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and stepwise multicomponent dynamic breakthrough experiments.

Industrially important C₂H₄ purification from multi-component hydrocarbon mixtures.

Search for an Excess of Electron Neutrino Interactions in MicroBooNE Using Multiple Final-State Topologies

We present a measurement of ν_{e} interactions from the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber to address the nature of the excess of low energy interactions observed by the MiniBooNE Collaboration. Three independent ν_{e} searches are performed across multiple single electron final states, including an exclusive search for two-body scattering events with a single proton, a semi-inclusive search for pionless events, and a fully inclusive search for events containing all hadronic final states. With differing signal topologies, statistics, backgrounds, reconstruction algorithms, and analysis approaches, the results are found to be either consistent with or modestly lower than the nominal ν_{e} rate expectations from the Booster Neutrino Beam and no excess of ν_{e} events is observed.

First Measurement of Energy-Dependent Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report a measurement of the energy-dependent total charged-current cross section σ(E_{ν}) for inclusive muon neutrinos scattering on argon, as well as measurements of flux-averaged differential cross sections as a function of muon energy and hadronic energy transfer (ν). Data corresponding to 5.3×10^{19} protons on target of exposure were collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab booster neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping between the true neutrino energy E_{ν} and reconstructed neutrino energy E_{ν}^{rec} and between the energy transfer ν and reconstructed hadronic energy E_{had}^{rec} are validated by comparing the data and Monte Carlo (MC) predictions. In particular, the modeling of the missing hadronic energy and its associated uncertainties are verified by a new method that compares the E_{had}^{rec} distributions between data and a MC prediction after constraining the reconstructed muon kinematic distributions, energy, and polar angle to those of data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well modeled and underpins first-time measurements of both the total cross section σ(E_{ν}) and the differential cross section dσ/dν on argon.

Insights into substrate behavior in a solvent-free protein liquid to rationalize its reduced catalytic rate

When proteins are engineered with a polymer surfactant coating on their surface, they can form a liquid phase by themselves, without the need for a solvent, such as, say, water. However, such solvent-free protein liquids (SFPL), despite their capability to function at temperatures above those in aqueous solutions, exhibit much reduced catalytic rates. A comprehensive understanding of the nature of substrates in such liquids is crucial to reason out the reduced catalytic activity of enzymes as SFPL media, and thus identify the means to improve the same. Employing atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of lipase A from Bacillus subtilis in its SFPL form, we demonstrate that at low concentrations, the substrate molecules are located mostly in the hydrophilic layer of the surfactant shell that ensheaths the enzyme; substrates in this SFPL are present in various conformations with similar propensities as in the aqueous solution. Slower translational diffusion and reorientational dynamics, as well as the reduced tendency of a substrate molecule to closely interact with the enzymes in the SFPL medium have been identified herein as the contributing factors for the reduced activity of enzymes in this hybrid liquid. At high concentrations of substrates corresponding to those used in in vitro experiments, the formation of an enzyme-substrate complex is observed. Microscopic insights reported here can aid in the choice of surfactants to improve the catalytic rate of enzymes in SFPL.

Epidemiology of Multidrug Resistance among Salmonella enterica serovars typhi and paratyphi A at a Tertiary Pediatric Hospital in India Over a Decade; In-silico Approach to Elucidate the Molecular Mechanism of Quinolone Resistance

BACKGROUND

Enteric fever caused by Salmonella enterica serovar typhi and Salmonella enterica serovar paratyphi A remains one of the most common causes of community-acquired bloodstream infection among children in India. Multidrug resistance is emerging and is a cause of concern as it affects the choice of treatment in enteric fever.

METHOD

In this study, a 10-year analysis of resistance patterns was done along with in-silico homology modeling and molecular docking to understand the commonly occurring quinolone resistance.

RESULTS

A total of 1010 cases of blood culture-confirmed enteric fevers (S. typhi n=849; S. paratyphi A n=161) were recorded at the study hospital during the period from 2011-2020. Multidrug resistance among cases of S. typhi was 2.12 %, whereas it was completely absent among cases of S. paratyphi A. Fluoroquinolone resistance was high (>95%) throughout the study period. Resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and co-trimoxacole was low (<3%) among S. typhi cases. No deaths were observed among study participants. Molecular docking analysis showed that quinolone had less binding affinity to mutated gyrase A than to its wild type for both S. typhi and S. paratyphi A.

CONCLUSION

Quinolone resistance was high among cases of enteric fever, whereas no resistance was observed among third-generation cephalosporins. In-silico studies indicated that a mutation in gyrase A might be the cause of the gradual increase in ciprofloxacin resistance over the study period.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral-Current Δ Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess under a Single-Photon Hypothesis

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a ⟨0.8⟩  GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE's first three years of operations (6.80×10^{20} protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in situ high-purity measurement of NC π^{0} events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5±3.65(syst) and 145.1±13.8(syst) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (C.L.). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% C.L., in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world's best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Indian Academy of Pediatrics Revised (2021) Guidelines on Prevention and Treatment of Vitamin D Deficiency and Rickets

JUSTIFICATION

The emerging literature on prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in India, prevention and treatment strategies of rickets, and extra-skeletal benefits of vitamin D suggest the need for revising the existing guidelines for prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency in India.

OBJECTIVES

To review the emerging literature on vitamin D prevalence and need for universal vitamin D supplementation. To suggest optimum vitamin D therapy for treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic vitamin D deficiency, and rickets. To evaluate the extra-skeletal health benefits of vitamin D in children.

PROCESS

A National consultative committee was formed that comprised of clinicians, epidemiologists, endocrinologists, and nutritionists. The Committee conducted deliberations on different aspects of vitamin D deficiency and rickets through ten online meetings between March and September, 2021. A draft guideline was formulated, which was reviewed and approved by all Committee members.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The group reiterates the serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D cutoffs proposed for vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency as <12 ng/mL, 12-20 ng/mL and >20 ng/mL, respectively. Vitamin D toxicity is defined as serum 25OHD >100 ng/mL with hypercalcemia and/or hypercalciuria. Vitamin D supplementation in doses of 400 IU/day is recommended during infancy; however, the estimated average requirement in older children and adolescents (400-600 IU/day, respectively) should be met from diet and natural sources like sunlight. Rickets and vitamin D deficiency should be treated with oral cholecalciferol, preferably in a daily dosing schedule (2000 IU below 1 year of age and 3000 IU in older children) for 12 weeks. If compliance to daily dosing cannot be ensured, intermittent regimens may be prescribed for children above 6 months of age. Universal vitamin D supplementation is not recommended in childhood pneumonia, diarrhea, tuberculosis, HIV and non-infectious conditions like asthma, atopic dermatitis, and developmental disorders. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D level of >20 ng/mL should be maintained in children with conditions at high-risk for vitamin deficiency, like nephrotic syndrome, chronic liver disease, chronic renal failure, and intake of anticonvulsants or glucocorticoids.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Vaccination for Children: Position Statement of Indian Academy of Pediatrics Advisory Committee on Vaccination and Immunization Practices

Multi-inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and long COVID cause significant morbidity in children. Prolonged school closures and quarantine have played havoc with the psychosocial health of children. Many countries in the world have issued emergency use authorisation (EUA) of selected Covid-19 vaccines for use in children. In India, a Subject Expert Committee (SEC) has recommended the use of Covaxin (Bharat Biotech) for children from the ages of 2-18 years. The recommendation has been given to the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for final approval.

To provide an evidence-based document to guide the pediatricians on the recommendation to administer COVID vaccines to children, as and when they are available for use.

The IAP and its members should be a partner with the Government of India, in the implementation of this program and the surveillance that is necessary following the roll-out.

Disposable biosensors based on metal nanoparticles

The coronavirus disease2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the need for disposable biosensors that can detect viruses in infected patients quickly due to fast response and also at a low cost.The present review provides an overview of the applications of disposable biosensors based on metal nanoparticles in enzymatic and non-enzymatic sensors with special reference to glucose and H₂O₂, immunosensors as well as genosensors (DNA biosensors in which the recognized event consists of the hybridization reaction)for point-of-care diagnostics. The disposable biosensors for COVID19 have also been discussed.

Age Structured Mathematical Modeling Studies on COVID-19 with respect to Combined Vaccination and Medical Treatment Strategies

In this study, we develop a mathematical model incorporating age-specific transmission dynamics of COVID-19 to evaluate the role of vaccination and treatment strategies in reducing the size of COVID-19 burden. Initially, we establish the positivity and boundedness of the solutions of the non controlled model and calculate the basic reproduction number and do the stability analysis. We then formulate an optimal control problem with vaccination and treatment as control variables and study the same. Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle is used to obtain the optimal vaccination and treatment rates. Optimal vaccination and treatment policies are analysed for different values of the weight constant associated with the cost of vaccination and different efficacy levels of vaccine. Findings from these suggested that the combined strategies (vaccination and treatment) worked best in minimizing the infection and disease induced mortality. In order to reduce COVID-19 infection and COVID-19 induced deaths to maximum, it was observed that optimal control strategy should be prioritized to the population with age greater than 40 years. Varying the cost of vaccination it was found that sufficient implementation of vaccines (more than 77 %) reduces the size of COVID-19 infections and number of deaths. The infection curves varying the efficacies of the vaccines against infection were also analysed and it was found that higher efficacy of the vaccine resulted in lesser number of infections and COVID induced deaths. The findings would help policymakers to plan effective strategies to contain the size of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ileal Perforation and Enteric Fever: Implications for Burden of Disease Estimation

Background

Ileal perforation occurs in about 1% of enteric fevers as a complication, with a case fatality risk (CFR) of 20%–30% in the early 1990s that decreased to 15.4% in 2011 in South East Asia. We report nontraumatic ileal perforations and its associated CFR from a 2-year prospective enteric fever surveillance across India.

Methods

The Surveillance for Enteric Fever in India (SEFI) project established a multitiered surveillance system for enteric fever between December 2017 and March 2020. Nontraumatic ileal perforations were surveilled at 8 tertiary care and 6 secondary care hospitals and classified according to etiology.

Results

Of the 158 nontraumatic ileal perforation cases identified,126 were consented and enrolled. Enteric fever (34.7%), tuberculosis (19.0%), malignancy (5.8%), and perforation of Meckel diverticulum (4.9%) were the common etiology. In those with enteric fever ileal perforation, the CFR was 7.1%.

Conclusions

Enteric fever remains the most common cause of nontraumatic ileal perforation in India, followed by tuberculosis. Better modalities of establishing etiology are required to classify the illness, and frame management guidelines and preventive measures. CFR data are critical for comprehensive disease burden estimation and policymaking.

A rare case of duodenal inversum- A laparoscopically manageable entity

Duodenal inversum is a rare disease not frequently encountered in clinical practice. The diagnosis is usually made late due to its rarity. Many other causes of abdominal pain like ulcer disease, pancreatitis, malrotation are mostly thought of initially and the diagnosis is usually missed. Only a few cases of duodenal inversum present with outlet obstruction. Duodenojejunostomy is perhaps the ideal management for duodenal inversum if the patient presents with outlet obstruction. Our intention is to create awareness of such a rare disease with an available definitive treatment option in the form of minimally invasive surgery. One such case of a 31-year-old man is described that was successfully managed by laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy.

Search for a Higgs Portal Scalar Decaying to Electron-Positron Pairs in the MicroBooNE Detector

We present a search for the decays of a neutral scalar boson produced by kaons decaying at rest, in the context of the Higgs portal model, using the MicroBooNE detector. We analyze data triggered in time with the Fermilab NuMI neutrino beam spill, with an exposure of 1.93×10^{20} protons on target. We look for monoenergetic scalars that come from the direction of the NuMI hadron absorber, at a distance of 100 m from the detector, and decay to electron-positron pairs. We observe one candidate event, with a standard model background prediction of 1.9±0.8. We set an upper limit on the scalar-Higgs mixing angle of θ<(3.3-4.6)×10^{-4} at the 95% confidence level for scalar boson masses in the range (100-200)  MeV/c^{2}. We exclude, at the 95% confidence level, the remaining model parameters required to explain the central value of a possible excess of K_{L}^{0}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] decays reported by the KOTO collaboration. We also provide a model-independent limit on a new boson X produced in K→πX decays and decaying to e^{+}e^{-}.

Pediatric Craniospinal Irradiation - The implementation and Use of Normal Tissue Complication Probability in Comparing Photon versus Proton Planning

Purpose:

The preferred radiotherapy treatment for medulloblastoma is craniospinal irradiation (CSI). With the aim of developing the potential to reduce normal tissue dose and associated post-treatment complications with photon and proton radiotherapy techniques for CSI. This report aims to carefully compare and rank treatment planning and dosimetric outcomes for pediatric medulloblastoma patients using normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) formalism between photon (three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy [IMRT], volumetric-modulated arc therapy [VMAT], and HT) and proton CSI.

Methods and Materials:

The treatment data of eight pediatric patients who typically received CSI treatment were used in this study. The patients were 7 years of age on average, with ages ranging from 3 to 11 years. A prescription dose of 3600 cGy was delivered in 20 fractions by the established planning methods. The Niemierko's and Lyman–Kutcher–Burman models were followed to carefully estimate NTCP and compare different treatment plans.

Results:

The NTCP of VMAT plans in upper and middle thoracic volumes was relatively high compared to helical tomotherapy (HT) and pencil beam scanning (PBS) (all P < 0.05). PBS rather than IMRT and VMAT in the middle thoracic region (P < 0.06) could significantly reduce the NTCP of the heart. PBS significantly reduced NTCP of the lungs and liver (all P < 0.05).

Conclusion:

The NTCP and tumor control probability (TCP) model-based plan ranking along with dosimetric indices will help the clinical practitioner or medical physicists to choose the best treatment plan for each patient based on their anatomical or clinical challenges.

Low temperatures or high isolation delay increases the average COVID-19 infections in India : A Mathematical modeling approach

The dynamics of COVID-19 in India are captured using a set of delay differential equations by dividing a population into five compartments. The Positivity and Boundedness of the system is shown. The Existence and Uniqueness condition for the solution of system of equations is presented. The equilibrium points are calculated and stability analysis is performed. Sensitivity analysis is performed on the parameters of the model. Bifurcation analysis is performed and the critical delay is calculated. By formulating the spread parameter as a function of temperature, the impact of temperature on the population is studied. We concluded that with the decrease in temperature, the average infections in the population increases. In view of the coming winter season in India, there will be an increase in new infections. This model falls in line with the characteristics that increase in isolation delay increases average infections in the population.
