Abstract
The many synthetic possibilities that arise when using radical intermediates, in place of their polar counterparts, make contemporary radical chemistry research an exhilarating field. The introduction of photocatalysis has helped tame aryl radicals, leading to a resurgence of interest in their chemistry, and an expansion of viable coupling partners and attainable transformations. These methods are more selective and safer than classical approaches, and they utilize new radical precursors. Given the importance of sustainability in current organic synthesis and our interest in light-assisted metal-free transformations, this Review focuses on recent advances in the use of aryl radicals in photoinduced cross-couplings that do not rely on metals for the crucial bond-forming event, and it is structured according to the key step that the aryl radicals engage in.

Abstract
Recent advancements in eco-friendly radical fluoroalkylation have substituted traditional two-electron-based reactions. However, the radical trifluoromethylation of terminal alkynes remains a significant challenge, primarily due to the high reactivity of alkenyl radical intermediates, which predominantly engage in reactions other than the desired elimination. In this work, we have developed an electrochemical trifluoromethylation method for terminal alkynes, facilitating the efficient formation of CF3-alkynes. The success of this method centers on the use of DMSO as a "masking auxiliary", which effectively stabilizes the alkenyl radical intermediate, allowing the reaction to proceed smoothly under mild conditions. This approach is supported by extensive experimental and computational studies, which elucidate the unique mechanism and expand the potential applications of radical trifluoromethylation across chemical synthesis.

Abstract
With dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the methylthio source, a KF-catalyzed strategy was employed for the direct thiomethylation of carboxylic acids with DMSO for the preparation of methyl thioesters. In this process, a wide range of methyl thioesters were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. This novel strategy features the first use of DMSO as a methylthiolating agent for the construction of methyl thioesters, transition metal-free conditions, inexpensive reagents, easy workup, broad substrate scope and sustainability. Additionally, this procedure can be readily scaled up to a gram scale.

Abstract
This study reports a mild and efficient synthetic protocol for the synthesis of symmetrical and unsymmetrical diarylmethanes (DAMs). Using DMSO as the C1 source and TMSOTf as the Lewis acid promoter, a series of functionalized symmetrical and unsymmetrical DAMs were synthesized in high yields. Gratifyingly, DMSO plays a dual role as a solvent and a C1 source and can also be replaced with its deuterated counterpart, DMSO-d6, enabling the incorporation of the -CD2 moiety into the diarylmethane skeleton. The developed approach has been applied to a wide range of substrates having various functional groups, and this protocol has also been extended to the synthesis of an anti-breast cancer agent and an anticoagulant agent using common feedstock compounds. In addition, the postulated mechanism has been explicitly demonstrated via control experiments.

Abstract
We have established a practical and concise method for the straightforward access of a universal deuterated methylthiolating reagent through a one-pot gram-scale operation under mild conditions. This odourless electrophilic SCD3 reagent was widely applied to react with numerous representative nucleophiles and approached various valuable SCD3 analogues with excellent levels of deuterium content (>99% D). The divergent further transformations were smoothly carried out to obtain the significant derivatives with different oxidative states in high efficiency.

Abstract
Abstract:
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is not only a common and cheap aprotic polar solvent with low toxicity, but also serves as an efficient and multipurpose reactant and has widely been used in organic synthesis. DMSO as an important precursor can effectively introducea broad range of functional fragments into organic molecules, such as -Me, -CH, -CH2, -SMe2, -CH2SMe, -CH2SOMe, -SMe, -SO2Me, -SOMe or as O substituents, and serves as a mild oxidant in organic transformations. Many significant achievements based on DMSO as a synthon in synthetic chemistry have rapidly made over the past several years. To help researchers further understand the recent advances in the field, the review summarizes the applications of DMSO as carbon, sulfur, and oxygen sources and is used as the dual synthon in synthetic transformations.

Abstract
An efficient electrochemical flow process for the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones and of sulfoxides to N-cyanosulfoximines has been developed. In total, 69 examples of sulfoxides, sulfones, and N-cyanosulfoximines have been synthesized in good to excellent yields and with high current efficiencies. The synthesis was assisted and facilitated through a supporting electrolyte-free, fully automated electrochemical protocol that highlights the advantages of flow electrolysis.

Abstract
Thiophene-based rings are one of the most widely used building blocks for the synthesis of sulfur-containing molecules. Inspired by the redox diversity of these features in nature, we demonstrate herein a redox-divergent construction of dihydrothiophenes, thiophenes, and bromothiophenes from the respective readily available allylic alcohols, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and HBr. The redox-divergent selectivity could be manipulated mainly by controlling the dosage of DMSO and HBr. Mechanistic studies suggest that DMSO simultaneously acts as an oxidant and a sulfur donor. The synthetic potentials of the products as platform molecules were also demonstrated by various derivatizations, including the preparation of bioactive and functional molecules.

Abstract
A novel visible-light-photocatalytic deuterated thiomethylation/methylselenation of aryldiazonium salts utilizing S/Se-methyl-d3 sulfonothioate has been developed. The mild conditions and the various functional groups provide a green protocol for the efficient and rapid introduction of the S-CD3 or Se-CD3 group with useful levels of deuterium content (>91% D). Trideuteromethyl sulfoxides have also been successfully chemoselectively observed by simple atmospheric changes under photocatalytic conditions.

Abstract
A phenyltrimethylammonium tribromide-mediated nucleophilic substitution/oxygen transformation reaction of benzyl halides with DMSO has been developed. In this transition-metal-free reaction, DMSO acts as not only a solvent but also a "S(O)Me" source, thus providing a convenient method for the efficient and direct synthesis of various benzyl methyl sulfoxides.

Abstract
A convenient acid-mediated reaction of β-keto sulfones with sulfoxides under metal-free conditions has been developed, thereby delivering the acid-controlled synthesis of β-sulfenyl ketones and α,β-disulfonyl ketones in good to excellent yields. The mechanism of the transformations has been studied carefully, which suggested the involvement of a radical process in the formation of α,β-disulfonyl ketones.

Abstract
A practical approach to the direct α-methylation of 1,8-naphthyridines under mild reaction conditions has been developed using simple and readily available DMSO as a convenient and environmentally friendly carbon source. This method is transition metal-free and highly chemoselective, shows good functional group tolerance, and uses DMSO as a methyl source, providing efficient and rapid access to an important compound class, 2-methyl-1,8-naphthyridines.

Abstract
A simple and green reaction was discovered for iodization-methylsulfoxidation of alkynes to access (E)-α-iodo-β-methylsulfonylalkenes. This is the first report for the synthesis of iodovinyl methylsulfones by employing alkynes to react with molecular iodine (I2), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), and H2O. Additionally, this protocol represents a new avenue for utilizing DMSO as the source of the -SO2Me group and H2O as the "O" source for the construction of the -SO2Me group from DMSO, which is a valuable finding.

Abstract
Herein, we report a novel strategy for the activation of DMSO to act as a versatile alkylating agent in heteroarene C-H functionalization. This direct, simple, and mild switch between methylation/trideuteromethylation and methylthiomethylation of heteroarenes was achieved under reagent-controlled photoredox catalysis conditions. The proposed mechanism is supported by both experimental and computational studies.
