Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has emerged as a powerful noninvasive analytical technique with widespread applications in biochemical analysis and biomedical diagnostics. The need for highly sensitive, reproducible, and efficient detection of biomolecules in complex biological environments has driven significant advancements in SERS-based biosensing platforms. In this context, micro/nanomachines (MNMs) have garnered attention as versatile SERS-active substrates due to their unique structural and motional characteristics at the micro- and nanoscale. This review explores the advantages of integrating MNMs with SERS for biosensing, discussing recent technological advances, various propulsion strategies, and their potential in a range of analytical applications.

Abstract
This work reports a hierarchically structured micromotor (HSM) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) platform comprising 3D tubular configurations with nanostructured outer walls. The HSMs can be powered by an external magnetic field in solution to enrich molecules with promoted adsorption efficiency. The nanostructured outer wall serves as containers to collect molecules and produce strong localized surface plasmon resonance to intensify Raman of the enriched molecules. Further coupling of HSMs after molecular enrichment can produce additional plasmonic hotspots at the sites where the molecules were enriched, providing a solution to manipulate molecules to enter the plasmonic hotspot region. Moreover, functionalizing specific molecules on the outer wall of HSMs enables high-specificity SERS sensing for benzaldehyde (BA) and Cu2+ ions in liquid. This SERS platform demonstrates great potential for practical applications in biochemical analysis and environmental monitoring, offering a rapid and sensitive tool for detecting low-concentration analytes in liquid.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used in all kinds of detection due to its ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity. Micromotors, when used as SERS sensors, or the so-called "hotspots on the fly", can combine both controlled mobility and SERS sensing capacity, and are ideal for versatile in situ detection. In this work, mobile SERS sensors are successfully fabricated by growing gold nanospikes onto magnetic microsphere surfaces. These mobile micromotors can act as normal SERS sensors, characterized by the trace detection of thiram, a highly toxic fungicide. The detection limit can reach 0.1 nM, as good as most other noble metal deposited substrates. With significant magnetic gradient forces, separation of pathogenic bacteria from bulk solution is achieved once these magnetic micromotors bind with bacterial cells. Manipulated propulsion of micromotors, on the other hand, enables them to approach and contact pathogenic bacterial cells on command and further acquire Raman spectra under a controlled degree of contact, a capability never seen with passive sensors. The robotic SERS sensors have demonstrated unique sensing characteristics with controlled manipulations along with discriminative detection between bacterial species.

Abstract
Untethered micro/nanorobots that can wirelessly control their motion and deformation state have gained enormous interest in remote sensing applications due to their unique motion characteristics in various media and diverse functionalities. Researchers are developing micro/nanorobots as innovative tools to improve sensing performance and miniaturize sensing systems, enabling in situ detection of substances that traditional sensing methods struggle to achieve. Over the past decade of development, significant research progress has been made in designing sensing strategies based on micro/nanorobots, employing various coordinated control and sensing approaches. This review summarizes the latest developments on micro/nanorobots for remote sensing applications by utilizing the self-generated signals of the robots, robot behavior, microrobotic manipulation, and robot-environment interactions. Providing recent studies and relevant applications in remote sensing, we also discuss the challenges and future perspectives facing micro/nanorobots-based intelligent sensing platforms to achieve sensing in complex environments, translating lab research achievements into widespread real applications.

Abstract
Photophoretic Au@MoS2 micromotors are used as smart mobile substrates for dynamic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing. The photophoretic capabilities and swarming-like propulsion of the micromotors allow for their schooling and accumulation in the measuring spot, increasing the density of SERS-active gold nanoparticles for Raman mapping and, simultaneously, the preconcentration of the target analyte. The generation of "hot-microflake spots" directly in the Raman irradiation point results in a 15-18-fold enhancement in the detection of crystal violet without the requirement for additional external sources for propulsion. Moreover, the reproducible collective micromotor motion does not depend on the exact position of the laser spot concerning individual micromotors, which greatly simplifies the experimental setup, avoiding the requirements of sophisticated equipment. The strategy was further applied for the detection of malachite green and paraquat with a good signal enhancement. The new on-the-move-based SERS strategy holds great promise for on-site detection with portable instrumentation in a myriad of environmental monitoring and clinical applications.

Abstract
The field of micro-/nanorobotics has attracted extensive interest from a variety of research communities and witnessed enormous progress in a broad array of applications ranging from basic research to global healthcare and to environmental remediation and protection. In particular, micro-/nanoscale robots provide an enabling platform for the development of next-generation chemical and biological sensing modalities, owing to their unique advantages as programmable, self-sustainable, and/or autonomous mobile carriers to accommodate and promote physical and chemical processes. In this review, we intend to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art development in this area and share our perspective in the future trend. This review starts with a general introduction of micro-/nanorobotics and the commonly used methods for propulsion of micro-/nanorobots in solution, along with the commonly used methods in their fabrication. Next, we comprehensively summarize the current status of the micro/nanorobotic research in relevance to chemical and biological sensing (e.g., motion-based sensing, optical sensing, and electrochemical sensing). Following that, we provide an overview of the primary challenges currently faced in the micro-/nanorobotic research. Finally, we conclude this review by providing our perspective detailing the future application of soft robotics in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract
Ultraviolet lithography is a very promising technology used for the batch fabrication of biomedical microswimmers. However, creating microswimmers that can swim at low Reynolds number using biocompatible materials while retaining strong magnetic properties and excellent biomedical functionality is a great challenge. Most of the previously reported biomedical microswimmers possess either strong magnetic properties by using non-biocompatible nickel coating or good biocompatibility by using iron oxide particle-embedded hydrogel with weak magnetism, but not both. Alternatively, iron oxide nanoparticles can be coated on the surface of microswimmers to improve magnetic properties; however, this method limited the usability of the microswimmers' surfaces. To address these shortcomings, this work utilized an in situ synthesis technique to generate high magnetic content inside hydrogel-based achiral planar microswimmers while leaving their surfaces free to be functionalized for SERS detection. The hydrogel matrices of the magnetically actuated hydrogel-based microswimmers were first prepared by ultraviolet lithography. Then, the high concentration of iron oxide was achieved through multiple continuous in situ coprecipitation cycles. Finally, the SERS detection capability of magnetically actuated hydrogel-based microswimmers was enabled by uniformly growing silver nanoparticles on the surface of the microswimmers. In the motion control tests, the microswimmers showed a high swimming efficiency, high step-out frequency, and consistent synchronized motion. Furthermore, the magnetically actuated hydrogel-based microswimmers were able to improve the detection efficiency of analytes under magnetic guidance.

Abstract
As a typical, classical, but powerful biochemical sensing technology in analytical chemistry, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) shows excellence and wide practicability for quantifying analytes of ultralow concentration. However, long incubation time and burdensome laborious multistep washing processes make it inefficient and labor-intensive for conventional ELISA. Here, we propose rod-like magnetically driven nanorobots (MNRs) for use as maneuverable immunoassay probes that facilitate a strategy for an automated and highly efficient ELISA analysis, termed nanorobots enabled ELISA (nR-ELISA). To prepare the MNRs, the self-assembled chains of Fe3O4 magnetic particles are chemically coated with a thin layer of rigid silica oxide (SiO2), onto which capture antibody (Ab1) is grafted to further achieve magnetically maneuverable immunoassay probes (MNR-Ab1s). We investigate the fluid velocity distribution around the MNRs at microscale using numerical simulation and empirically identify the mixing efficiency of the actively rotating MNRs. To automate the analysis process, we design and fabricate by 3-D printing a detection unit consisting of three function wells. The MNR-Ab1s can be steered into different function wells for required reaction or wishing process. The actively rotating MNR-Ab1s can enhance the binding efficacy with target analytes at microscale and greatly decrease incubation time. The integrated nR-ELISA system can significantly reduce the assay time, more importantly during which process manpower input is greatly minimized. Our simulation of the magnetic field distribution generated by Helmholtz coils demonstrates that our approach can be scaled up, which proves the feasibility of using current strategy to construct high throughput nR-ELISA detection instrument. This work of taking magnetic micro/nanobots as active immunoassay probes for automatic and efficient ELISA not only holds great potential for point-of-care testing (POCT) in future but also extends the practical applications of self-propelled micro/nanorobots into the field of analytical chemistry.

Abstract
Field-effect-transistor (FET) biosensors capable of rapidly detecting disease-relevant biomarkers have long been considered as a promising tool for point-of-care (POC) diagnosis. Rolled-up nanotechnology, as a batch fabrication strategy for generating three-dimensional (3D) microtubes, has been demonstrated to possess unique advantages for constructing FET biosensors. In this paper, we report a new approach combining the two fascinating technologies, the FET biosensor and the rolled-up microtube, to develop a microfluidic diagnostic biosensor. We integrated an excellent biosensing III-nitride material-indium nitride (InN)-into a rolled-up microtube and used it as the FET channel. The InN possesses strong, intrinsic, and stable electron accumulation (~1013 cm-2) on its surface, thereby providing a high device sensitivity. Multiple rolled-up InN microtube FET biosensors fabricated on the same substrate were integrated with a microfluidic channel for convenient fluids handling, and shared the same external electrode (inserted into the microchannel outlet) for gating voltage modulation. Using human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody as a model disease marker, we characterized the analytical performance of the developed biosensor and achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.5 pM for serum samples spiked with HIV gp41 antibodies. The rolled-up InN microtube FET biosensor represents a new type of III-nitride-based FET biosensor and holds significant potential for practical POC diagnosis.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is recognized as one of the most sensitive spectroscopic tools for chemical and biological detections. Hotspots engineering has expedited promotion of SERS performance over the past few decades. Recently, molecular enrichment has proven to be another effective approach to improve the SERS performance. In this work, we propose a concept of "motile hotspots" to realize ultrasensitive SERS sensing by combining hotspots engineering and active molecular enrichment. High-density plasmonic nanostructure-supporting hotspots are assembled on the tubular outer wall of micromotors via nanoimprint and rolling origami techniques. The dense hotspots carried on these hierarchically structured micromotors (HSMs) can be magnet-powered to actively enrich molecules in fluid. The active enrichment manner of HSMs is revealed to be effective in accelerating the process of molecular adsorption. Consequently, SERS intensity increases significantly because of more molecules being adjacent to the hotspots after active molecular enrichment. This "motile hotspots" concept provides a synergistical approach in constructing a SERS platform with high performance. Moreover, the newly developed construction method of HSMs manifests the possibility of tailoring tubular length and diameter as well as surface patterns on the outer wall of HSMs, demonstrating good flexibility in constructing customized micromotors for various applications.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful sensing technique capable of capturing ultrasensitive fingerprint signal of analytes with extremely low concentration. However, conventional SERS probes are passive nanoparticles which are usually massively applied for biochemical sensing, lacking controllability and adaptability for precise and targeted sensing at a small scale. Herein, we report a "rod-like" magnetic nanomotor-based SERS probe (MNM-SP) that integrates a mobile and controllable platform of micro-/nanomotors with a SERS sensing technique. The "rod-like" structure is prepared by coating a thin layer of silica onto the self-assembled magnetic nanoparticles. Afterwards, SERS hotspots of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are decorated as detecting nanoprobes. The MNM-SPs can be navigated on-demand to avoid obstacles and target sensing sites by the guidance of an external gradient magnetic field. Through applying a rotating magnetic field, the MNM-SPs can actively rotate to efficiently stir and mix surrounding fluid and thus contact with analytes quickly for SERS sensing. Innovatively, we demonstrate the self-cleaning capability of the MNM-SPs which can be used to overcome the contamination problem of traditional single-use SERS probes. Furthermore, the MNM-SPs could precisely approach the targeted single cell and then enter into the cell by endocytosis. It is worth mentioning that by the effective mixing of intracellular biocomponents, much more informative Raman signals with improved signal-to-noise ratio can be captured after active rotation. Therefore, the demonstrated magnetically activated MNM-SPs that are endowed with SERS sensing capability pave way to the future development of smart sensing probes with maneuverability for biochemical analysis at the micro-/nanoscale.

Abstract
Enrichment and enhancement are two important aspects of ultratrace biomolecule recognition in complex biological samples. Here we integrate acoustic aggregation of modified Au nanorods with Raman enhancement for all-in-one ultratrace rapid biomolecule detection in one microliter solution. Arising from the interaction between individual nanoparticles and the acoustic field, the aggregation of Au nanorods results in rapid migration of specifically modified Au nanorods toward pressure node in a few seconds and accompanies the enrichment of specific biomolecular. As a proof concept, rapid and sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of nucleic acids (10-13 M) in microliter-scale (10-6 L) sample is achieved. Such an approach integrates ultrasonic aggregation-induced enrichment (uAIE) with Raman enhancement, holding considerable promise for efficient, sensitive, and rapid on-chip detection of ultratrace biomarkers in a clinical sample solution.

Abstract
Three-dimensional microstructures fabricated by origami, including folding, rolling and buckling, gain great interests in mechanics, optics and electronics. We propose a general strategy on on-demand and spontaneous rolling origami for artificial microstructures aiming at massive and intelligent production. Deposited nanomembranes are rolled-up in great amount triggered by the intercalation of tiny droplet, taking advantage of a creative design of van der Waals interaction with substrate. The rolling of nanomembranes delaminated by liquid permits a wide choice in materials as well as precise manipulation in rolling direction by controlling the motion of microdroplet, resulting in intelligent construction of rolling microstructures with designable geometries. Moreover, this liquid-triggered delamination phenomenon and constructed microstructures are demonstrated in the applications among vapor sensing, microresonators, micromotors, and microactuators. This investigation offers a simple, massive, low-cost, versatile and designable construction of rolling microstructures for fundamental research and practical applications. Rolling microstructures have great potential among optics and micromechanics but on-demand construction with versatile materials remains challenging. Here Xu et al. precisely construct 3D rolling microstructures by liquid-triggered delamination in predictable manner and demonstrate their applications.

Abstract
In this work, UV light-controlled two-dimensional (2D) TiO2 plate micromotors are demonstrated for the first time. The 2D TiO2 micromotors are produced by the well-known anodic oxidation method in combination with a cracking and separation process. When the motor is placed in H2O2 aqueous solution under UV irradiation, oxygen bubbles are generated in the holes of the TiO2 membrane. The 2D micromotor thus moves upon O2 bubbles under its own weight. In contrast to bubble-propelled micromotors, which require an addition of surfactants to chemical fuels, the 2D micromotor is capable of moving in aqueous H2O2 solution without surfactants. Moreover, speed of the 2D TiO2 micromotor can be controlled by the intensity of the UV light. Such surfactant-free micromotors and their facile fabrication hold considerable promise for diverse practical applications in the biomedical and energy fields, for example, and in new materials.

Abstract
There are two main aspects of environmental governance including monitoring and remediation, both of which are essential for environmental protection. Self-propelled micro/nanomotors (MNM) have shown promising potential for achieving on-demand tasks in environmental field, including environmental sensing and pollutant removal or degradation. However, most of the current MNM used in environmental protection can hardly accomplish the two major tasks of both monitoring and pollutant degradation. Hereby, we present a bubble-propelled mesoporous silica-coated titania (TiO2@mSiO2) bilayer tubular micromotor with platinum (Pt) and magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified on their inner walls. The outer mesoporous silica (mSiO2) layer can effectively adsorb and collect the pollutants, and the adsorption capacity of the TiO2@mSiO2 tube is about 3 times higher than that of the TiO2 tube due to the presence of mSiO2 shell. By magnetic manipulation, the micromotors can be recovered to release the collected pollutant for precise analysis of the composition of the pollutants, such us pollutant molecule identification by surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The active motion and photocatalytic TiO2 inner layer of the micromotors can greatly enhance the degradation rate of the model pollutant rhodamine 6G (R6G). Our results show that within 30 min, up to 98% of R6G can be degraded by the motors. The successful demonstration of the TiO2@mSiO2 bilayer tubular motors for simultaneous environmental monitoring and pollutant degradation paves the way for future development of active and intelligent micro/nanorobots for advanced environmental governance.

Abstract
The microtubes made through rolling-up of strain-engineered nanomembranes have received growing research attention after their first invention due to the technology's high flexibility, integrability, and versatility. These rolled-up microtubes have been used for a variety of device applications including sensors, batteries and transistors, among others. This paper reports the development of highly sensitive whispering-gallery mode (WGM) chemical sensors based on rolled-up microtube optical microcavities (RUM-OCs). For the first time, such microcavities were batch fabricated through rolling-up of plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD)-synthesized SiO x /SiN x bilayer nanomembranes, which have better optical properties than the conventional electron-beam-deposited SiO/SiO2 bilayers. Benefiting from the high refractive index (RI) of PECVD-deposited SiN x , our RUM-OC shows an enhanced quality factor of 880 that is much higher than that (50) of a SiO/SiO2 RUM-OC with the same dimensions. The developed RUM-OC is used for sensitive WGM solvent sensing, and demonstrate a limit of detection of 10-4 refractive index unit (RIU), which is 10 times lower than that (10-3 RIU) of a SiO/SiO2 RUM-OC.

Abstract
Manipulating nanocracks to produce various nanodevices has attracted increasing interest. Here, based on the mature transfer printing technique, a novel notch-assisted transfer printing technique was engaged to produce nanocracks by simply introducing notch structures into the transferred nanomembranes. Both experiments and finite element simulations were used to elucidate the probability of nanocrack formation during the transfer process, and the results demonstrated that the geometry of nanomembranes played a key role in concentrating stress and producing nanocracks. We further demonstrated that the obtained nanocrack can be used as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate because of the significant enhancement of electric fields. In addition, the capillary condensation of water molecules in the nanocrack led to an obvious change of resistance, thus providing an opportunity for the crack-based structure to be used as an ultrasensitive humidity sensor. The current approach can be applied to producing nanocracks from multiple materials and will have important applications in the field of nanodevices.
