Reuse of iron ore tailings as an efficient adsorbent to remove dyes from aqueous solution

In this work, an iron ore tailings sample (IOT), collected from a tailings dam in Minas Gerais, Brazil, was characterized. The IOT presented point of zero charge of ∼ 6, specific surface area of 4 m2 g-1, and was mainly composed of hematite and quartz. Subsequently, experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption of an anionic dye, Direct Red 80 (DR80), and a cationic dye, Methylene Blue (MB), by the IOT, studying the effects of its dose (doseIOT) and the solution initial pH (pH0). The DR80 removal increased with the decrease of the pH0 while the opposite effect occurred in the experiments with the MB, suggesting the process is governed by the adsorption resulting from electrostatic forces. The increase in the doseIOT increased the DR80 and MB removal, which can be attributed to the greater availability of adsorption sites. Pseudo-second order kinetic (R2 > 0.9994) and the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm (R2 > 0.9842) models described well the DR80 adsorption by the IOT, being the reaction rate and maximum adsorption capacity higher at lower pH0. In a regeneration experiment, it was possible to desorb almost entirely the DR80 using a NaOH solution. Additionally, the regenerated IOT was able to adsorb the DR80, demonstrating its reusability. In a preliminary assay, the IOT decreased the colour of the textile wastewater sample at pH0 3. Therefore, the results indicate the potential use of IOT for removing electric-charged pollutants by adsorption, especially anionic ones under acidic conditions.

Synergistic reduction of nitrophenols by Au-CDs nanoconjugates with NaBH4

Developing sustainable and innovative approaches for the efficient reduction of nitrophenols is crucial for environmental remediation, for managing health concerns posed by their widespread presence as hazardous pollutants in industrial effluents and contaminated water. We report the use of 12.9 ± 1 nm (TEM data) sized gold carbon dot nanoconjugates (Au@CDs) for catalytic conversion of o, m, p-nitrophenols to aminophenols by sodium borohydride. A simple approach was followed to synthesize ultra-small and highly stable Au@CDs, using citric acid and PEG as reducing and stabilizing agents. X-ray diffraction analysis verified the formation of nano-crystalline nanoconjugates. These nanoconjugates showed a remarkable catalytic activity in the range of 0.22-0.33 s-1(varying with nanoconjugate concentration) which was much higher compared to conventional chemical methods of reduction. All the catalytic reaction experiments were performed at room temperature (27 ± 2 °C). Furthermore, an increase in rate constant was observed with increasing concentration of nanoconjugates. The catalytic activity of Au@CDs nanoconjugates was observed to be in order of m-nitrophenol > o-nitrophenol > p-nitrophenol with apparent rate constant (kaap) values of 0.068, 0.043 and 0.031, respectively. Comparative analysis with GNPs, CDs and Au@CDs nanoconjugates stated that the nanoconjugates had superior catalytic activity. The research can have significant implications in the development of new strategies for environmental remediation and biomedical applications.

Theoretical and Experimental Analysis of Hydroxyl and Epoxy Group Effects on Graphene Oxide Properties

In this study, we analyzed the impact of hydroxyl and epoxy groups on the properties of graphene oxide (GO) for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye from water, addressing the urgent need for effective water purification methods due to industrial pollution. Employing a dual approach, we integrated experimental techniques with theoretical modeling via density functional theory (DFT) to examine the atomic structure of GO and its adsorption capabilities. The methodology encompasses a series of experiments to evaluate the performance of GO in MB dye adsorption under different conditions, including differences in pH, dye concentration, reaction temperature, and contact time, providing a comprehensive view of its effectiveness. Theoretical DFT calculations provide insights into how hydroxyl and epoxy modifications alter the electronic properties of GO, improving adsorption efficiency. The results demonstrate a significant improvement in the dye adsorption capacity of GO, attributed to the interaction between the functional groups and MB molecules. This study not only confirms the potential of GO as a superior adsorbent for water treatment, but also contributes to the optimization of GO-based materials for environmental remediation, highlighting the synergy between experimental observations and theoretical predictions in advances in materials science to improve sustainability.

Electronic Metal-support Interactions Boost *OOH Intermediate Generation in Cu/In2Se3 for Electrochemical H2O2 Production

Two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) is a promising method for the synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, high energy barriers for the generation of key *OOH intermediates hinder the process of 2e- ORR. Herein, we prepared a copper-supported indium selenide catalyst (Cu/In2Se3) to enhance the selectivity and yield of 2e- ORR by employing an electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs) strategy. EMSIs-induced charge rearrangement between metallic Cu and In2Se3 is conducive to *OOH intermediate generation, promoting H2O2 production. Theoretical investigations reveal that the inclusion of Cu significantly lowers the energy barrier of the 2e- ORR intermediate and impedes the 4e- ORR pathway, thus favoring the formation of H2O2. The concentration of H2O2 produced by Cu/In2Se3 is ~2 times than In2Se3, and Cu/In2Se3 shows promising applications in antibiotic degradation. This research presents a valuable approach for the future utilization of EMSIs in 2e- ORR.

One-Step Electrochemical Synthesis of Multiyolk-Shell Nanocoils for Exceptional Photocatalytic Performance

Multiyolk-shell (mYS) nanostructures have garnered significant interest in various photocatalysis applications such as water splitting and waste treatment. Nonetheless, the complexity and rigorous conditions for the synthesis have hindered their widespread implementation. This study presents a one-step electrochemical strategy for synthesizing multiyolk-shell nanocoils (mYSNC), wherein multiple cores of noble metal nanoparticles, such as Au, are embedded within the hollow coil-shaped FePO4 shell structures, mitigating the challenges posed by conventional methods. By capitalizing on the dissimilar dissolution rates of bimetallic alloy nanocoils in an electrochemically programmed solution, nanocoils of different shapes and materials, including two variations of mYSNCs are successfully fabricated. The resulting Au-FePO4 mYSNCs exhibit exceptional photocatalytic performance for environmental remediation, demonstrating up to 99% degradation of methylene blue molecules within 50 min and 95% degradation of tetracycline within 100 min under ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) light source. This remarkable performance can be attributed to the abundant electrochemical active sites, internal voids facilitating efficient light harvesting with coil morphology, amplified localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) at the plasmonic nanoparticle-semiconductor interface, and effective band engineering. The innovative approach utilizing bimetallic alloys demonstrates precise geometric control and design of intricate multicomponent hybrid composites, showcasing the potential for developing versatile hollow nanomaterials for catalytic applications.

Estimated scale of costs to remove PFAS from the environment at current emission rates

This discussion article builds upon existing data to ask whether environmental remediation and treatment is an economically viable solution to manage global environmental stocks of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) without extensive use restrictions. Their environmental persistence means that PFAS released into the environment will remain there until actively removed and destroyed. Thus, removing and destroying PFAS from the global environment at the same rate they are currently being added reflects a theoretical steady-state condition where global PFAS stocks remain constant. Current costs to remove perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), a subclass of PFAS, from the environment at the same rate they are being added were estimated here at 20 to 7000 trillion USD per year. If the ratio of total PFAS emissions to PFAAs emissions matches current production ratios, total PFAS release rates and associated treatment costs could be 10 to 10,000 higher than presented above for PFAAs only. Thus, current costs to remove and destroy the total PFAS mass released annually into the environment would likely exceed the global GDP of 106 trillion USD. While this level of treatment is not technically or economically achievable, it highlights the unaffordability of using environmental remediation alone to manage environmental PFAS stocks. Without significant reductions in production and emissions, the mass of PFAS present in the global environment will continue to rise. Treating targeted environmental media will be needed to manage human and environmental health impacts, but we are limited to the level of treatment that is practical and affordable.

Advancing PFAS Sorbent Design: Mechanisms, Challenges, and Perspectives

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals characterized with persistence and multisurface resistance. Their accumulation in the environment and toxicity to human beings have contributed to the rapid development of regulations worldwide since 2002. The sorption strategy, taking advantage of intermolecular interactions for PFAS capture, provides a promising and efficient solution to the treatment of PFAS contaminated sources. Hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions are the two commonly found in commercially available PFAS sorbents, with the fluorous interaction being the novel mechanism applied for sorbent selectivity. The main object of this Perspective is to provide a critical review on the current design criteria of PFAS sorbents, with particular focus on their sorption and interaction mechanisms as well as limitations. An outlook on future innovative design for efficient PFAS sorbents is also provided.

Magnetic Removal of Micro- and Nanoplastics from Water-from 100 nm to 100 µm Debris Size

Clean water is one of the most important resources of the planet but human-made contamination with diverse pollutants increases continuously. Microplastics (<5 mm diameter) which can have severe impacts on the environment, are present worldwide. Degradation processes lead to nanoplastics (<1 µm), which are potentially even more dangerous due to their increased bioavailability. State-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants show a deficit in effectively eliminating micro- and nanoplastics (MNP) from water, particularly in the case of nanoplastics. In this work, the magnetic removal of three different MNP types across three orders of magnitude in size (100 nm-100 µm) is investigated systematically. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) tend to attract oppositely charged MNPs and form aggregates that can be easily collected by a magnet. It shows that especially the smallest fractions (100-300 nm) can be separated in ordinary high numbers (1013  mg-1 SPION) while the highest mass is removed for MNP between 2.5 and 5 µm. The universal trend for all three types of MNP can be fitted with a derived model, which can make predictions for optimizing SPIONs for specific size ranges in the future.

Preparation and Application of Single-Atom Cobalt Catalysts in Organic Synthesis and Environmental Remediation

The development of high-performance catalysts plays a crucial role in facilitating chemical production and reducing environmental contamination. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), a class of catalysts that bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, have garnered increasing attention because of their unique activity, selectivity, and stability in many pivotal reactions. Meanwhile, the scarcity of precious metal SACs calls for the arrival of cost-effective SACs. Cobalt, as a common non-noble metal, possesses tremendous potential in the field of single-atom catalysis. Despite their potential, reviews about single-atom Co catalysts (Co-SACs) are lacking. Accordingly, this review thoroughly summarized various preparation methodologies of Co-SACs, particularly pyrolysis; its application in the specific domain of organic synthesis and environmental remediation is discussed as well. The structure-activity relationship and potential catalytic mechanism of Co-SACs are elucidated through some representative reactions. The imminent challenges and development prospects of Co-SACs are discussed in detail. The findings and insights provided herein can guide further exploration and development in this charming area of catalyst design, leading to the realization of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes.

From Water for Water: PEDOT:PSS-Chitosan Beads for Sustainable Dyes Adsorption

This study investigates the viability of developing chitosan-based hydrogels derived from waste shrimp shells for the removal of methylene blue and methyl orange, thereby transforming food waste into advanced materials for environmental remediation. Despite chitosan-based adsorbents being conventionally considered ideal for the removal of negative pollutants, through targeted functionalization with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) at varying concentrations, we successfully enhance the hydrogels' efficacy in also adsorbing positively charged adsorbates. Specifically, the incorporation of PEDOT:PSS at a concentration of 10% v/v emerges as a critical factor in facilitating the robust adsorption of dyes. In the case of the anionic dye methyl orange (MO, 10-5 M), the percentage of removed dye passed from 47% (for beads made of only chitosan) to 66% (for beads made of chitosan-PEDOT:PSS 10%), while, in the case of the cationic dye methylene blue (MB, 10-5 M), the percentage of removed dye passed from 52 to 100%. At the basis of this enhancement, there is an adsorption mechanism resulting from the interplay between electrostatic forces and π-π interactions. Furthermore, the synthesized functionalized hydrogels exhibit remarkable stability and reusability (at least five consecutive cycles) in the case of MB, paving the way for the development of cost-effective and sustainable adsorbents. This study highlights the potential of repurposing waste materials for environmental benefits, introducing an innovative approach to address the challenges regarding water pollution.

Bio-Based Aerogels for the Removal of Heavy Metal Ions and Oils from Water: Novel Solutions for Environmental Remediation

Contamination of the aqueous environment caused by the presence of heavy metal ions and oils is a growing concern that must be addressed to reduce their detrimental impact on living organisms and safeguard the environment. Recent efficient and environmentally friendly remediation methods for the treatment of water are based on third-generation bioaerogels as emerging applications for the removal of heavy metal ions and oils from aqueous systems. The peculiarities of these materials are various, considering their high specific surface area and low density, together with a highly porous three-dimensional structure and tunable surface chemistry. This review illustrates the recent progress in aerogels developed from cellulose and chitosan as emerging materials in water treatment. The potential of aerogel-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment is reported in terms of adsorption efficacy and reusability. Despite various gaps affecting the manufacturing and production costs of aerogels that actually limit their successful implementation in the market, the research progress suggests that bio-based aerogels are ready to be used in water-treatment applications in the near future.

Unveiling the Halogenation-Induced Formation of Hg3Se2X2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) Compounds for Multiphase Mercury Cycling

The interaction between mercury (Hg) and inorganic compounds, including selenium (Se), sulfur (S), and halogens (X = Cl, Br, or I), plays a critical role in the global mercury cycle. However, most previously reported mercury compounds are susceptible to reduction, leading to the release of elemental mercury (Hg0) and causing secondary pollution. In this study, we unveil a groundbreaking discovery that underscores the vital role of halogenation in creating exceptionally stable Hg3Se2X2 compounds. Through the dynamic interplay of Hg, Se, and halogens, an intermediary stage denoted [HgSe]m[HgX2]n emerges, and this transformative process significantly elevates the stabilization of mercury. Remarkably, halogen ions strategically occupy pores at the periphery of HgSe clusters, engendering a more densely packed atomic arrangement of Hg, Se, and halogen components. A marked enhancement in both thermal and acid stability is observed, wherein temperatures ascend from 130 to 300 °C (transitioning from HgSe to Hg3Se2Cl2). This sequence of escalating stability follows the order HgSe < Hg3Se2I2 < Hg3Se2Br2 < Hg3Se2Cl2 for thermal resilience, complemented by virtually absent acid leaching. This innovative compound formation fundamentally alters the transformation pathways of gaseous Hg0 and ionic mercury (Hg2+), resulting in highly efficient in situ removal of both Hg0 and Hg2+ ions. These findings pave the way for groundbreaking advancements in mercury stabilization and environmental remediation strategies, offering a comprehensive solution through the creation of chemically stable precipitates.

Few-Atomic Zero-Valent Palladium Ensembles for Efficient Reductive Dehydrogenation and Dehalogenation Catalysis

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) offer immense potential in heterogeneous catalysis due to their maximized atomic utilization and high selectivity but suffer the problem of low reactivity in catalytic reductive reactions due to their high-valent state. Here, we demonstrate that supported palladium (Pd) ensembles consisting of a few zero-valent Pd atoms (Pd1+c-red/CN) exhibit exceptional reactivity in formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) dechlorination. The initial FA dehydrogenation and 4-CP dechlorination rates of Pd1+c-red/CN are 42-104 and 16-210 times higher than that of supported Pd SACs (Pd1-ox/CN), respectively. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that optimal adsorption sites of Pd1+c-red/CN stimulate the formation of H*, which is indispensable for 4-CP dechlorination. Moreover, direct electron transfer from Pd atoms to FA with a high electron density on Pd1+c-red/CN also contributes to the rapid 4-CP dechlorination. The superior dehalogenation capability of Pd1+c-red/CN for organohalides of great environmental and health concerns suggested its immense application potential in environmental remediation. This work highlights the pivotal roles of the structure and valence state of Pd ensembles in catalytic reductive reactions and provides a strategy to broaden the application of Pd-based catalysts for dehydrogenation and dehalogenation.

Tailoring Interfacial Physicochemical Properties in Cu2O-TiO2@rGO Heterojunction: Insights from EXAFS and Electron Trap Distribution Analysis

In this study, a solution-based synthesis technique was utilized to produce Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) on TiO2 nanofibers (TNF), which were then subsequently coated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. In the absence of any cocatalyst, CTNF@rGO-3% composite displayed an ideal photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 96 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation, this was 10 times higher than that of pure TNF. At 420 nm, the apparent quantum efficiency of this composite reached a maximum of 7.18%. Kelvin probe force microscopy demonstrated the formation of an interfacial electric field that was oriented from CTNF to rGO and served as the driving force for interfacial electron transfer. The successful establishment of an intimate interface between CTNF@rGO facilitated the efficient transfer of charges and suppressed the rate of recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, leading to a substantial enhancement in photocatalytic performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra, and electrochemical characterization provide further confirmation that formation of a heterojunction between CTNF@rGO leads to an extension in the lifetimes of the photogenerated charge carriers. The experimental evidence suggests that a p-n heterojunction is the mechanism responsible for the significant photocatalytic activity observed in the CTNF@rGO composite during H2 evolution.

Tailoring Fe0 Nanoparticles via Lattice Engineering for Environmental Remediation

Lattice engineering of nanomaterials holds promise in simultaneously regulating their geometric and electronic effects to promote their performance. However, local microenvironment engineering of Fe0 nanoparticles (nFe0) for efficient and selective environmental remediation is still in its infancy and lacks deep understanding. Here, we present the design principles and characterization techniques of lattice-doped nFe0 from the point of view of microenvironment chemistry at both atomic and elemental levels, revealing their crystalline structure, electronic effects, and physicochemical properties. We summarize the current knowledge about the impacts of doping nonmetal p-block elements, transition-metal d-block elements, and hybrid elements into nFe0 crystals on their local coordination environment, which largely determines their structure-property-activity relationships. The materials' reactivity-selectivity trade-off can be altered via facile and feasible approaches, e.g., controlling doping elements' amounts, types, and speciation. We also discuss the remaining challenges and future outlooks of using lattice-doped nFe0 materials in real applications. This perspective provides an intuitive interpretation for the rational design of lattice-doped nFe0, which is conducive to real practice for efficient and selective environmental remediation.

Nocardioides: "Specialists" for Hard-to-Degrade Pollutants in the Environment

Nocardioides, a genus belonging to Actinomycetes, can endure various low-nutrient conditions. It can degrade pollutants using multiple organic materials such as carbon and nitrogen sources. The characteristics and applications of Nocardioides are described in detail in this review, with emphasis on the degradation of several hard-to-degrade pollutants by using Nocardioides, including aromatic compounds, hydrocarbons, haloalkanes, nitrogen heterocycles, and polymeric polyesters. Nocardioides has unique advantages when it comes to hard-to-degrade pollutants. Compared to other strains, Nocardioides has a significantly higher degradation rate and requires less time to break down substances. This review can be a theoretical basis for developing Nocardioides as a microbial agent with significant commercial and application potential.

A Sustainable Method for Removal of the Full Range of Liquid and Solid Hydrocarbons from Water Including Up- and Recycling

Beyond their CO2 emittance when burned as fuels, hydrocarbons (HCs) serve as omnipresent raw materials and commodities. No matter if as liquid oil spills or the endless amounts of plastic roaming the oceans, HCs behave as persistent pollutants with water as main carrier to distribute. Even if their general chemical structure [-(CH2 )n -] is quite simple, the endless range of n leads to contaminations of different appearances and properties. A water remediation method based on superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) modified with self-assembled monolayers of alkyl phosphonic acid derivatives is presented. These molecules enable the SPIONs to non-covalently bind HCs, independently from the molecular weight, size and morphology. The attractive interaction is mainly based on hydrophobic and Coulomb interaction, which allows recycling of the SPIONs. The superparamagnetic core allows a simple magnetic collection and separation from the water phase which makes it a promising addition to wastewater treatment. Agglomerates of collected plastic "waste" even exhibit superior adsorption properties for crude oil, another hydrocarbon waste which gives these collected wastes a second life. This upcycling approach combined with presented recycling methods enables a complete recycling loop.

Nanofibers and Nanotextured Materials: Design Insights, Bactericidal Mechanisms and Environmental Advances

Antibiotic resistance is rising and poses a serious threat to human health on a worldwide scale. It can make it more difficult to cure common infections, raise medical expenditures, and increase mortality. In order to combat the development of biofilms and treat fatal bacterial infections, multifunctional polymeric nanofibers or nanotextured materials with specific structural features and special physiochemical capabilities have become a crucial tool. Due to the increased antibiotic resistance of many diseases, nanofibers with antibacterial activity are essential. Electrospinning is a flexible process able to produce fine fibers with specified properties by modifying variables such as the concentration of the solution, the feed flow, and the electric voltage. Substantial advancements have been made regarding the formation of nanofibers or nanotextured materials for a variety of applications, along with the development of electrospinning techniques in recent years. Using well-defined antimicrobial nanoparticles, encapsulating traditional therapeutic agents, plant-based bioactive agents, and pure compounds in polymer nanofibers has resulted in outstanding antimicrobial activity and has aided in curing deadly microbial infections. A plethora of studies have revealed that electrospinning is an effective technique for the production of antimicrobial fibers for the environmental, biomedical, pharmaceutical, and food sectors. Nevertheless, numerous studies have also demonstrated that the surface characteristics of substrates, such as holes, fibers, and ridges at the nanoscale, have an impact on cell proliferation, adhesion, and orientation.

Iodine and Nickel Ions Adsorption by Conjugated Copolymers Bearing Repeating Units of Dicyclopentapyrenyl and Various Thiophene Derivatives

The synthesis of three conjugated copolymers TPP1-3 was carried out using a palladium-catalyzed [3+2] cycloaddition polymerization of 1,6-dibromopyrene with various dialkynyl thiophene derivatives 3a-c. The target copolymers were obtained in excellent yields and high purity, as confirmed by instrumental analyses. TPP1-3 were found to divulge a conspicuous iodine adsorption capacity up to 3900 mg g-1, whereas the adsorption mechanism studies revealed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Furthermore, recyclability tests of TPP3, the copolymer which revealed the maximum iodine uptake, disclosed its efficient regeneration even after numerous adsorption-desorption cycles. Interestingly, the target copolymers proved promising nickel ions capture efficiencies from water with a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) of 48.5 mg g-1.

Hydrothermal carbonization of vegetable-tanned leather shavings (HTC-VTS) for environmental remediation: optimization of process conditions

Herein, the response surface methodology (RSM) has been used to study simultaneously the effects of carbonization temperature, residence time and moisture content on the activated hydrochar preparation-based vegetable-tanned leather shavings (VTS) using hydrothermal carbonization method (HTC). Owing to the desirability chosen, three responses were analysed, namely: the hydrochar yield, iodine and methylene blue numbers. The analysis of experimental results revealed that the hydrochar yield was decreased with increase in carbonization temperature which led to micropores formation inside the hydrochar network. The optimal preparation conditions retained were: 83.10%, 390.44 mg g-1 and 259.63 mg g-1 for the hydrochar yield, iodine and methylene blue number respectively. The hydrochar micrograph showed the presence of external pores, whereas the FTIR analysis recorded the presence of acidic functional groups found on hydrochar surface. The findings revealed that the VTS is a good precursor for the hydrochar preparation useful in the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants in aqueous media.

Functional Carbon Capsules Supporting Ruthenium Nanoclusters for Efficient Electrocatalytic 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - Removal from Acidic and Alkaline Nuclear Wastes

The selective removal of the β-emitting pertechnetate ion (99 TcO4 - ) from nuclear waste streams is technically challenging. Herein, a practical approach is proposed for the selective removal of 99 TcO4 - (or its surrogate ReO4 - ) under extreme conditions of high acidity, alkalinity, ionic strength, and radiation field. Hollow porous N-doped carbon capsules loaded with ruthenium clusters (Ru@HNCC) are first prepared, then modified with a cationic polymeric network (R) containing imidazolium-N+ units (Ru@HNCC-R) for selective 99 TcO4 - and ReO4 - binding. The Ru@HNCC-R capsules offer high binding affinities for 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - under wide-ranging conditions. An electrochemical redox process then transforms adsorbed ReO4 - to bulk ReO3 , delivering record-high removal capacities, fast kinetics, and excellent long-term durability for removing ReO4 - (as a proxy for 99 TcO4 - ) in a 3 m HNO3 , simulated nuclear waste-Hanford melter recycle stream and an alkaline high-level waste stream (HLW) at the U.S. Savannah River Site (SRS). In situ Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses showed that adsorbed Re(VII) is electrocatalytically reduced on Ru sites to a Re(IV)O2 intermediate, which can then be re-oxidized to insoluble Re(VI)O3 for facile collection. This approach overcomes many of the challenges associated with the selective separation and removal of 99 TcO4 - /ReO4 - under extreme conditions, offering new vistas for nuclear waste management and environmental remediation.

Constructing A Solar Evaporator by Stacking Exhausted Wood Sponges for Freshwater Generation and Fertilizer Recovery

Solar water evaporation is an efficient and sustainable technology. To reduce energy consumption and improve cost efficiency, the surface modification of wood sponge by polypyrrole-glutathione (PGWS) was achieved using an in-situ synthetic method. The PGWS exhibits excellent adsorption efficiency for Hg(II) ions with adsorption capacity of 330.8 mg g-1 at 25 °C. Following Hg(II) absorption, the PGWS could be upcycled for solar steam generation. A stackable device was constructed by placing two wood sponges under a Hg(II) saturated PGWS [PGWS-Hg(II)], this system exhibited the highest water evaporation rate of 2.14 kg m-2  h-1 under 1 kW m-2 . Moreover, collecting paper was inserted between the stacked PGWS-Hg(II) and wood sponge for the collection of salts. As such salt can be successfully collected from simulated fertilizer plant effluent and then used as a nutrient for growing plants using a hydroponic system. The facile design of stackable evaporation provides an opportunity for wastewater utilization by harvesting solar energy.

Actinide Ion (Americium-241 and Uranium-232) Interaction with Hybrid Silica-Hyperbranched Poly(ethylene imine) Nanoparticles and Xerogels

The binding of actinide ions (Am(III) and U(VI)) in aqueous solutions by hybrid silica-hyperbranched poly(ethylene imine) nanoparticles (NPs) and xerogels (XGs) has been studied by means of batch experiments at different pH values (4, 7, and 9) under ambient atmospheric conditions. Both materials present relatively high removal efficiency at pH 4 and pH 7 (>70%) for Am(III) and U(VI). The lower removal efficiency for the nanoparticles is basically associated with the compact structure of the nanoparticles and the lower permeability and access to active amine groups compared to xerogels, and the negative charge of the radionuclide species is formed under alkaline conditions (e.g., UO2(CO3)34- and Am(CO3)2-). Generally, the adsorption process is relatively slow due to the very low radionuclide concentrations used in the study and is basically governed by the actinide diffusion from the aqueous phase to the solid surface. On the other hand, adsorption is favored with increasing temperature, assuming that the reaction is endothermic and entropy-driven, which is associated with increasing randomness at the solid-liquid interphase upon actinide adsorption. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on hybrid silica-hyperbranched poly(ethylene imine) nanoparticle and xerogel materials used as adsorbents for americium and uranium at ultra-trace levels. Compared to other adsorbent materials used for binding americium and uranium ions, both materials show far higher binding efficiency. Xerogels could remove both actinides even from seawater by almost 90%, whereas nanoparticles could remove uranium by 80% and americium by 70%. The above, along with their simple derivatization to increase the selectivity towards a specific radionuclide and their easy processing to be included in separation technologies, could make these materials attractive candidates for the treatment of radionuclide/actinide-contaminated water.

Photocatalytic Self-Fenton System of g-C3N4-Based for Degradation of Emerging Contaminants: A Review of Advances and Prospects

The discharge of emerging pollutants in the industrial process poses a severe threat to the ecological environment and human health. Photocatalytic self-Fenton technology combines the advantages of photocatalysis and Fenton oxidation technology through the in situ generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and interaction with iron (Fe) ions to generate a large number of strong reactive oxygen species (ROS) to effectively degrade pollutants in the environment. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is considered as the most potential photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) photocatalyst for H2O2 production due to its excellent chemical/thermal stability, unique electronic structure, easy manufacturing, and moderate band gap (2.70 eV). Hence, in this review, we briefly introduce the advantages of the photocatalytic self-Fenton and its degradation mechanisms. In addition, the modification strategy of the g-C3N4-based photocatalytic self-Fenton system and related applications in environmental remediation are fully discussed and summarized in detail. Finally, the prospects and challenges of the g-C3N4-based photocatalytic self-Fenton system are discussed. We believe that this review can promote the construction of novel and efficient photocatalytic self-Fenton systems as well as further application in environmental remediation and other research fields.

Light-Driven MXene-Based Microrobots: Mineralization of Bisphenol A to CO2 and H2 O

Light-driven magnetic MXene-based microrobots (MXeBOTs) have been developed as an active motile platform for efficiently removing and degrading bisphenol A (BPA). Light-driven MXeBOTs are facilitated with the second control engine, i.e., embedded Fe2 O3 nanoparticles (NPs) for magnetic propulsion. The grafted bismuth NPs act as cocatalysts. The effect of the BPA concentration and the chemical composition of the swimming environment on the stability and reusability of the MXeBOTs are studied. The MAXBOTs, a developed motile water remediation platform, demonstrate the ability to remove/degrade approximately 60% of BPA within just 10 min and achieve near-complete removal/degradation (≈100%) within 1 h. Above 86% of BPA is mineralized within 1 h. The photocatalytic degradation of BPA using Bi/Fe/MXeBOTs demonstrates a significant advantage in the mineralization of BPA to CO2 and H2 O.

Environmental Applications of Electromembrane Extraction: A Review

Electromembrane extraction (EME) is a miniaturized extraction technique that has been widely used in recent years for the analysis and removal of pollutants in the environment. It is based on electrokinetic migration across a supported liquid membrane (SLM) under the influence of an external electrical field between two aqueous compartments. Based on the features of the SLM and the electrical field, EME offers quick extraction, effective sample clean-up, and good selectivity, and limits the amount of organic solvent used per sample to a few microliters. In this paper, the basic devices (membrane materials and types of organic solvents) and influencing factors of EME are first introduced, and the applications of EME in the analysis and removal of environmental inorganic ions and organic pollutants are systematically reviewed. An outlook on the future development of EME for environmental applications is also given.

Modulating Anion Nanotraps via Halogenation for High-Efficiency 99TcO4-/ReO4- Removal under Wide-Ranging pH Conditions

Efficient and sustainable methods for ⁹⁹TcO₄^- removal from acidic nuclear waste streams, contaminated water, and highly alkaline tank wastes are highly sought after. Herein, we demonstrate that ionic covalent organic polymers (iCOPs) possessing imidazolium-N⁺ nanotraps allow the selective adsorption of ⁹⁹TcO₄^- under wide-ranging pH conditions. In particular, we show that the binding affinity of the cationic nanotraps toward ⁹⁹TcO₄^- can be modulated by tuning the local environment around the nanotraps through a halogenation strategy, thereby enabling universal pH ⁹⁹TcO₄^- removal. A parent iCOP-1 possessing imidazolium-N⁺ nanotraps showed fast kinetics (reaching adsorption equilibrium in 1 min), a high adsorption capacity (up to 1434.1 ± 24.6 mg/g), and exceptional selectivity for ⁹⁹TcO₄^- and ReO₄^- (nonradioactive analogue of ⁹⁹TcO₄^-) removal in contaminated water. By introducing F groups near the imidazolium-N⁺ nanotrap sites (iCOP-2), a ReO₄^- removal efficiency over 58% was achieved in 60 min in 3 M HNO₃ solution. Further, introduction of larger Br groups near the imidazolium-N⁺ binding sites (iCOP-3) imparted a pronounced steric effect, resulting in exceptional adsorption performance for ⁹⁹TcO₄^- under super alkaline conditions and from low-activity waste streams at US legacy Hanford nuclear sites. The halogenation strategy reported herein guides the task-specific design of functional adsorbents for ⁹⁹TcO₄^- removal and other applications.

Efficient Removal of Carcinogenic Azo Dyes from Water Using Iron(II) Clathrochelate Derived Metalorganic Copolymers Made from a Copper-Catalyzed [4 + 2] Cyclobenzannulation Reaction

A novel synthetic strategy is disclosed to prepare a new class of metalorganic copolymers that contain iron(II) clathrochelate building blocks by employing a mild and cost-effective copper-catalyzed [4 + 2] cyclobenzannulation reaction, using three specially designed diethynyl iron(II) clathrochelate synthons. The target copolymers CBP1-3 were isolated in high purity and excellent yields as proven by their structural and photophysical characterization, namely, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-VIS absorption and emission spectroscopies. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of CBP1-3 revealed an excellent chemical stability. Investigation of the adsorption properties of the target copolymers towards the carcinogenic methyl red dye from aqueous solution revealed a quantitative uptake in 30 min. Isothermal adsorption studies disclosed that methyl red uptake from aqueous solution followed the Langmuir model for all of the target copolymers, reaching a maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) of 431 mg g^-. Kinetic investigation revealed that the adsorption followed pseudo-first-order with an equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_e,cal) of 79.35 mg g^- and whose sorption property was sustained even after its reuse several times.

Hybrid Polymer-Silica Nanostructured Materials for Environmental Remediation

Due to the ever-growing global population, it is necessary to develop highly effective processes that minimize the impact of human activities and consumption on the environment. The levels of organic and inorganic contaminants have rapidly increased in recent years, posing a threat to ecosystems. Removing these toxic pollutants from the environment is a challenging task that requires physical, chemical, and biological methods. An effective solution involves the use of novel engineered materials, such as silica-based nanostructured materials, which exhibit a high removal capacity for various pollutants. The starting materials are also thermally and mechanically stable, allowing for easy design and development at the nanoscale through versatile functionalization procedures, enabling their effective use in pollutant capture. However, improvements concerning mechanical properties or applicability for repeated cycles may be required to refine their structural features. This review focuses on hybrid/composite polymer-silica nanostructured materials. The state of the art in nanomaterial synthesis, different techniques of functionalization, and polymer grafting are described. Furthermore, it explores the application of polymer-modified nanostructured materials for the capture of heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives, drugs, and other organic compounds. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for future research aimed at advancing the application of polymer-silica nanostructured materials in the efficiency of pollutant uptake.

Current approaches, and challenges on identification, remediation and potential risks of emerging plastic contaminants: A review

Plastics are widely employed in modern civilization because of their durability, mold ability, and light weight. In the recent decade, micro/nanoplastics research has steadily increased, highlighting its relevance. However, contaminating micro/nanoplastics in marine environments, terrestrial ecosystems, and biological organisms is considered a severe threat to the environmental system. Geographical distribution, migration patterns, etymologies of formation, and ecological ramifications of absorption are just a few topics covered in the scientific literature on environmental issues. Degradable solutions from material science and chemistry are needed to address the micro/nanoplastics problem, primarily to reduce the production of these pollutants and their potential effects. Removing micro/nanoplastics from their discharge points has been a central and effective way to mitigate the adverse pollution effects. In this review, we begin by discussing the hazardous effect on living beings and the identification-characterization of micro/nanoplastics. Then, we provide a summary of the existing degradation strategies, which include bio-degradation and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and a detailed discussion of their degradation mechanisms is also represented. Finally, a persuasive summary of the evaluated work and projections for the future of this topic is provided.

Kinetic and Thermodynamic Study of Methylene Blue Adsorption on TiO2 and ZnO Thin Films

In this work, we fabricated and characterized ZnO and TiO₂ thin films, determining their structural, optical, and morphological properties. Furthermore, we studied the thermodynamics and kinetics of methylene blue (MB) adsorption onto both semiconductors. Characterization techniques were used to verify thin film deposition. The semiconductor oxides reached different removal values, 6.5 mg/g (ZnO) and 10.5 mg/g (TiO₂), after 50 min of contact. The pseudo-second-order model was suitable for fitting the adsorption data. ZnO had a greater rate constant (45.4 × 10^-3) than that of TiO₂ (16.8 × 10^-3). The removal of MB by adsorption onto both semiconductors was an endothermic and spontaneous process. Finally, the stability of the thin films showed that both semiconductors maintained their adsorption capacity after five consecutive removal tests.

Exopolysaccharides Producing Bacteria: A Review

Bacterial exopolysaccharides (EPS) are essential natural biopolymers used in different areas including biomedicine, food, cosmetic, petroleum, and pharmaceuticals and also in environmental remediation. The interest in them is primarily due to their unique structure and properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, higher purity, hydrophilic nature, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, antibacterial, and immune-modulating and prebiotic activities. The present review summarizes the current research progress on bacterial EPSs including their properties, biological functions, and promising applications in the various fields of science, industry, medicine, and technology, as well as characteristics and the isolation sources of EPSs-producing bacterial strains. This review provides an overview of the latest advances in the study of such important industrial exopolysaccharides as xanthan, bacterial cellulose, and levan. Finally, current study limitations and future directions are discussed.

Exploring a Redox-Active Ionic Porous Organic Polymer in Environmental Remediation and Electrochromic Application

Here, we report the design and synthesis of a redox-active multifunctional ionic porous organic polymer iPOP-Bpy with exchangeable Br^- ions, incorporating viologen as a redox-active building block. The material shows not only excellent iodine uptake capacity in the vapor phase (540 wt %) but also in the organic (1009.77 mg g^-1) and aqueous phases (3921.47 mg g^-1) with very fast adsorption kinetics in all cases. The material also shows its utility in being used as a solid-state NH₃ vapor sensor as it shows very fast color switching in the presence of NH₃ vapor. Furthermore, the material found application as a p-type complementary electrochromic electrode and was fabricated into a bilayer device. Excellent coloration efficiency, high switching speed, and good color contrast were obtained as investigated using bias-dependent optical and spectroelectrochemical studies, paving the way for fabricating power-efficient solid-state electrochromic devices.

Efficient Co-Adsorption and Highly Selective Separation of Cs+ and Sr2+ with a K+ -Activated Niobium Germanate by the pH Control

¹³⁷ Cs and ⁹⁰ Sr are hazardous to ecological environment and human health due to their strong radioactivity, long half-life, and high mobility. However, effective adsorption and separation of Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ from acidic radioactive wastewater is challenging due to stability issues of material and the strong competition of protons. Herein, a K⁺ -activated niobium germanate (K-NGH-1) presents efficient Cs⁺ /Sr²⁺ coadsorption and highly selective Cs⁺ /Sr²⁺ separation, respectively, under different acidity conditions. In neutral solution, K-NGH-1 exhibits ultrafast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity for both Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ (q_m ^Cs  = 182.91 mg g^-1 ; q_m ^Sr  = 41.62 mg g^-1 ). In 1 M HNO₃ solution, K-NGH-1 still possesses q_m ^Cs of 91.40 mg g^-1 for Cs⁺ but almost no adsorption for Sr²⁺ . Moreover, K-NGH-1 can effectively separate Cs⁺ from 1 M HNO₃ solutions with excess competing Sr²⁺ and M^{n +} (M^{n +}  = Na⁺ , Ca²⁺ , Mg²⁺ ) ions. Thus, efficient separation of Cs⁺ and Sr²⁺ is realized under acidic conditions. Besides, K-NGH-1 shows excellent acid and radiation resistance and recyclability. All the merits above endow K-NGH-1 with the first example of niobium germanates for radionuclides remediation. This work highlights the facile pH control approach towards bifunctional ion exchangers for efficient Cs⁺ /Sr²⁺ coadsorption and selective separation.

Visible Light-Mediated Inactivation of H1N1 Virus UsingPolymer-Based Heterojunction Photocatalyst

It is well known that viruses cannot replicate on their own but only inside the cells of target tissues in the organism, resulting in the destruction of the cells or, in some cases, their transformation into cancer cells. While viruses have relatively low resistance in the environment, their ability to survive longer is based on environmental conditions and the type of substrate on which they are deposited. Recently, the potential for safe and efficient viral inactivation by photocatalysis has garnered increasing attention. In this study, the Phenyl carbon nitride/TiO₂ heterojunction system, a hybrid organic-inorganic photocatalyst, was utilized to investigate its effectiveness in degrading the flu virus (H1N1). The system was activated by a white-LED lamp, and the process was tested on MDCK cells infected with the flu virus. The results of the study demonstrate the hybrid photocatalyst's ability to cause the virus to degrade, highlighting its effectiveness for safe and efficient viral inactivation in the visible light range. Additionally, the study underscores the advantages of using this hybrid photocatalyst over traditional inorganic photocatalysts, which typically only work in the ultraviolet range.

Tailoring of Mesoporous Silica-Based Materials for Enhanced Water Pollutants Removal

The adsorptive performance of mesoporous silica-based materials towards inorganic (metal ions) and organic (dyes) water pollutants was investigated. Mesoporous silica materials with different particle size, surface area and pore volume were prepared and tailored with different functional groups. These materials were then characterised by solid-state techniques, namely vibrational spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, allowing the successful preparation and structural modifications of the materials to be confirmed. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the adsorbents towards the removal of metal ions (Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Fe³⁺) and organic dyes (methylene blue and methyl green) from aqueous solutions was also investigated. The results reveal that the exceptionally high surface area and suitable ζ-potential of the nanosized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) seem to favour the adsorptive capacity of the material for both types of water pollutants. Kinetic studies were performed for the adsorption of organic dyes by MSNPs and large-pore mesoporous silica (LPMS), suggesting that the process follows a pseudo-second-order model. The recyclability along consecutive adsorption cycles and the stability of the adsorbents after use were also investigated, showing that the material can be reused. Current results show the potentialities of novel silica-based material as a suitable adsorbent to remove pollutants from aquatic matrices with an applicability to reduce water pollution.

Investigating the Electrochemically Driven Capture and Release of Long-Chain PFAS by Redox Metallopolymer Sorbents

The remediation of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is an urgent challenge due to their prevalence and persistence in the environment. Electrosorption is a promising approach for wastewater treatment and water purification, especially through the use of redox polymers to control the binding and release of target contaminants without additional external chemical inputs. However, the design of efficient redox electrosorbents for PFAS faces the significant challenge of balancing a high adsorption capacity while maintaining significant electrochemical regeneration. To overcome this challenge, we investigate redox-active metallopolymers as a versatile synthetic platform to enhance both electrochemical reversibility and electrosorption uptake capacity for PFAS removal. We selected and synthesized a series of metallopolymers bearing ferrocene and cobaltocenium units spanning a range of redox potentials to evaluate their performance for the capture and release of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Our results demonstrate that PFOA uptake and regeneration efficiency increased with more negative formal potential of the redox polymers, indicating possible structural correlations with the electron density of the metallocenes. Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl cobaltoceniumcarboxylate hexafluorophosphate) (PMAECoPF₆) showed the highest affinity toward PFOA, with an uptake capacity of more than 90 mg PFOA/g adsorbent at 0.0 V vs Ag/AgCl and a regeneration efficiency of more than 85% at -0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl. Kinetics of PFOA release showed that electrochemical bias greatly enhanced the regeneration efficiency when compared to open-circuit desorption. In addition, electrosorption of PFAS from different wastewater matrices and a range of salt concentrations demonstrated the capability of PFAS remediation in complex water sources, even at ppb levels of contaminants. Our work showcases the synthetic tunability of redox metallopolymers for enhanced electrosorption capacity and regeneration of PFAS.

Horseradish Peroxidase-Coupled Ag3 PO4 /BiVO4 Photoanode for Biophotoelectrocatalytic Degradation of Organic Contaminants

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) is regarded as a promising and sustainable process for removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. Meanwhile, enzymatic catalysis also provides an effective way to carry out polluted environment remediation under mild conditions. In this study, a biophotoelectrocatalytic (BPEC) system is designed to remove 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) based on a combination of PEC and enzymatic catalysis. The developed BPEC system is constructed with a Ag₃ PO₄ /BiVO₄ photoanode and a horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-loaded carbon cloth (CC) cathode. On the photoanode, the construction of a direct Z-scheme Ag₃ PO₄ /BiVO₄ heterojunction enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers, which promoted the PEC degradation of 4-NP under visible light irradiation. After HRP was immobilized on the cathode, the degradation efficiency of 4-NP reached 97.1 % after 60 min PEC treatment. The result could be ascribed to the HRP-catalyzed oxidation reaction via in situ-generated H₂ O₂ from the CC cathode during the PEC process. Moreover, the possible degradation pathways of 4-NP in such a BPEC system are also discussed.

Small-Scale Robotics with Tailored Wettability

Small-scale robots (SSRs) have emerged as promising and versatile tools in various biomedical, sensing, decontamination, and manipulation applications, as they are uniquely capable of performing tasks at small length scales. With the miniaturization of robots from the macroscale to millimeter-, micrometer-, and nanometer-scales, the viscous and surface forces, namely adhesive forces and surface tension have become dominant. These forces significantly impact motion efficiency. Surface engineering of robots with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functionalization presents a brand-new pathway to overcome motion resistance and enhance the ability to target and regulate robots for various tasks. This review focuses on the current progress and future perspectives of SSRs with hydrophilic and hydrophobic modifications (including both tethered and untethered robots). The study emphasizes the distinct advantages of SSRs, such as improved maneuverability and reduced drag forces, and outlines their potential applications. With continued innovation, rational surface engineering is expected to endow SSRs with exceptional mobility and functionality, which can broaden their applications, enhance their penetration depth, reduce surface fouling, and inhibit bacterial adhesion.

Bismuth Vanadate Decked Polyaniline Polymeric Nanocomposites: The Robust Photocatalytic Destruction of Microbial and Chemical Toxicants

Functional materials have long been studied for a variety of environmental applications, resource rescue, and many other conceivable applications. The present study reports on the synthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) integrated polyaniline (PANI) using the hydrothermal method. The topology of BiVO₄ decked PANI catalysts was investigated by SEM and TEM. XRD, EDX, FT-IR, and antibacterial testing were used to examine the physicochemical and antibacterial properties of the samples, respectively. Microscopic images revealed that BiVO₄@PANI are comprised of BiVO₄ hollow cages made up of nanobeads that are uniformly dispersed across PANI tubes. The PL results confirm that the composite has the lowest electron-hole recombination compared to others samples. BiVO₄@PANI composite photocatalysts demonstrated the maximum degradation efficiency compared to pure BiVO₄ and PANI for rhodamine B dye. The probable antimicrobial and photocatalytic mechanisms of the BiVO₄@PANI photocatalyst were proposed. The enhanced antibacterial and photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the high surface area and combined impact of PANI and BiVO₄, which promoted the migration efficiency of photo-generated electron holes. These findings open up ways for the potential use of BiVO₄@PANI in industries, environmental remediation, pharmaceutical and medical sectors. Nevertheless, biocompatibility for human tissues should be thoroughly examined to lead to future improvements in photocatalytic performance and increase antibacterial efficacy.

Water Decontamination from Cr(VI) by Transparent Silica Xerogel Monolith

Cr(VI) is highly soluble and mobile in water solution and extremely toxic. In order to obtain a specific material with adsorption properties towards Cr(VI), and that can be used in environmental remediation of water contaminated with Cr(VI), one-step sol-gel technique, at low temperature (50 °C), has been optimized to prepare transparent silica-based xerogel monolith by using tetraethyl orthosilicate as precursor. The obtained xerogel, with disk shape, was fully characterized by Raman, BET, FE-SEM and XRD analysis. The results indicated that the material showed silica amorphous phase and high porosity. The study of the adsorption properties towards different concentrations of Cr(VI), in the form of HCrO₄^- in acidic condition, showed prominent results. The absorption kinetics were evaluated by studying different models, the final result showing that the absorption of Cr(VI) occurred through intra-particle diffusion process, following two steps, and that the absorption equilibrium is regulated by Freundlich isotherm model. The material can be restored by reducing the hazardous Cr(VI) to Cr(III), a less toxic form of chromium, by 1,5-diphenylcarbazide, and with successive treatment in acidic water.

Sustainable Low-Cost Phosphorus Recovery Using Nanostructured Materials with Reusability Potential

A new low-cost material with a polymeric base formed from sodium silicate was developed. The material presents a nanostructured, highly rich iron surface with a large phosphorus retention capacity and potential reuse as a crop fertilizer. In the present study, we demonstrate that iron is the element that acts as an adsorbent for phosphate, while the polymeric base functions exclusively as a support for iron. The iron is uniformly adsorbed on the surface of the material, forming nanostructures, which ensure that iron works similarly to nanoparticles in solution but avoid other problems, such as particle agglomeration or the difficulty of separating them after the removal process. Materials were characterised by SEM, EDS, N₂ sorption, and image processing, and the effect of pH, ionic strength, and temperature was studied. Sorption kinetics were analysed using Boyd's diffusion model, and adsorption equilibria were studied using several adsorption models. A maximum iron adsorption on the polymeric base of 23.9 ± 0.3 mg Fe∙g^-1 was found, while maximum phosphorus adsorption was 366 ± 21 mg P∙g^-1 Fe. Thus, phosphorus is recovered from the aqueous medium with an inexpensive material that has the potential to be used directly as a fertilizer.

Nanotextured CeO2-SnO2 Composite: Efficient Photocatalytic, Antibacterial, and Energy Storage Fibers

Bacterial infections remain a serious and pervasive threat to human health. Bacterial antibiotic resistance, in particular, lowers treatment efficacy and increases mortality. The development of nanomaterials has made it possible to address issues in the biomedical, energy storage, and environmental fields. This paper reports the successful synthesis of CeO₂-SnO₂ composite nanofibers via an electrospinning method using polyacrylonitrile polymer. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy assessments showed that the average diameter of CeO₂-SnO₂ nanofibers was 170 nm. The result of photocatalytic degradation for methylene blue dye displayed enhanced efficiency of the CeO₂-SnO₂ composite. The addition of SnO₂ to CeO₂ resulted in the enhancement of the light absorption property and enriched charge transmission of photoinduced electron-hole duos, which conspicuously contributed to momentous photoactivity augmentation. Composite nanofibers exhibited higher specific capacitance which may be accredited to the synergism between CeO₂ and SnO₂ particles in nanofibers. Furthermore, antibacterial activity was screened against Escherichia coli and CeO₂-SnO₂ composite nanofibers depicted excellent activity. The findings of this work point to new possibilities as an electrode material in energy storage systems and as a visible-light-active photocatalyst for the purification of chemical and biological contaminants, which would substantially benefit environmental remediation processes.

Recent Advances in Chitosan-Based Applications-A Review

Chitosan derived from chitin gas gathered much interest as a biopolymer due to its known and possible broad applications. Chitin is a nitrogen-enriched polymer abundantly present in the exoskeletons of arthropods, cell walls of fungi, green algae, and microorganisms, radulae and beaks of molluscs and cephalopods, etc. Chitosan is a promising candidate for a wide variety of applications due to its macromolecular structure and its unique biological and physiological properties, including solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and reactivity. Chitosan and its derivatives have been known to be applicable in medicine, pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, agriculture, the textile and paper industries, the energy industry, and industrial sustainability. More specifically, their use in drug delivery, dentistry, ophthalmology, wound dressing, cell encapsulation, bioimaging, tissue engineering, food packaging, gelling and coating, food additives and preservatives, active biopolymeric nanofilms, nutraceuticals, skin and hair care, preventing abiotic stress in flora, increasing water availability in plants, controlled release fertilizers, dye-sensitised solar cells, wastewater and sludge treatment, and metal extraction. The merits and demerits associated with the use of chitosan derivatives in the above applications are elucidated, and finally, the key challenges and future perspectives are discussed in detail.

Photo-Antibacterial Activity of Two-Dimensional (2D)-Based Hybrid Materials: Effective Treatment Strategy for Controlling Bacterial Infection

Bacterial contamination in water bodies is a severe scourge that affects human health and causes mortality and morbidity. Researchers continue to develop next-generation materials for controlling bacterial infections from water. Photo-antibacterial activity continues to gain the interest of researchers due to its adequate, rapid, and antibiotic-free process. Photo-antibacterial materials do not have any side effects and have a minimal chance of developing bacterial resistance due to their rapid efficacy. Photocatalytic two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D-NMs) have great potential for the control of bacterial infection due to their exceptional properties, such as high surface area, tunable band gap, specific structure, and tunable surface functional groups. Moreover, the optical and electric properties of 2D-NMs might be tuned by creating heterojunctions or by the doping of metals/carbon/polymers, subsequently enhancing their photo-antibacterial ability. This review article focuses on the synthesis of 2D-NM-based hybrid materials, the effect of dopants in 2D-NMs, and their photo-antibacterial application. We also discuss how we could improve photo-antibacterials by using different strategies and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the photocatalyst and in the degradation of pollutants. Finally, we discuss was of improving the photo-antibacterial activity of 2D-NMs, the toxicity mechanism, and their challenges.

Modeling Adsorption of CO(2) in Rutile Metallic Oxide Surfaces: Implications in CO(2) Catalysis

CO₂ is the most abundant greenhouse gas, and for this reason, it is the main target for finding solutions to climatic change. A strategy of environmental remediation is the transformation of CO₂ to an aggregated value product to generate a carbon-neutral cycle. CO₂ reduction is a great challenge because of the large C=O dissociation energy, ~179 kcal/mol. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a strategy to address this issue, where the adsorption process is the fundamental step. The focus of this work is the role of adsorption in CO₂ reduction by means of modeling the CO₂ adsorption in rutile metallic oxides (TiO₂, GeO₂, SnO_2, IrO₂ and PbO₂) using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and periodic DFT methods. The comparison of adsorption on different metal oxides forming the same type of crystal structure allowed us to observe the influence of the metal in the adsorption process. In the same way, we performed a comparison of the adsorption capability between two different surface planes, (001) and (110). Two CO₂ configurations were observed, linear and folded: the folded conformations were observed in TiO₂, GeO₂ and SnO₂, while the linear conformations were present in IrO₂ and PbO₂. The largest adsorption efficiency was displayed by the (001) surface planes. The CO₂ linear and folded configurations were related to the interaction of the oxygen on the metallic surface with the adsorbate carbon, and the linear conformations were associated with the physisorption and folded configurations with chemisorption. TiO₂ was the material with the best performance for CO₂ interactions during the adsorption.

Efficient Day-and-Night NO2 Abatement by Polyaniline/TiO2 Nanocomposites

Finding innovative and highly performing approaches for NOx degradation represents a key challenge to enhance the air quality of our environment. In this study, the high efficiency of PANI/TiO₂ nanostructures in the NO₂ abatement both in the dark and under light irradiation is demonstrated for the first time. Heterostructures were synthesized by a "green" method and their composition, structure, morphology and oxidation state were investigated by a combination of characterization techniques. The results show that the unique PANI structure promotes two mechanisms for the NO₂ abatement in the dark (adsorption on the polymeric chains and chemical reduction to NO), whereas the photocatalytic behavior prevails under light irradiation, leading to the complete NOx degradation. The best-performing materials were subjected to recycling tests, thereby showing high stability without any significant activity loss. Overall, the presented material can represent an innovative and efficient night-and-day solution for NOx abatement.

Engineered g-C3N5-Based Nanomaterials for Photocatalytic Energy Conversion and Environmental Remediation

Photocatalysis plays a vital role in sustainable energy conversion and environmental remediation because of its economic, eco-friendly, and effective characteristics. Nitrogen-rich graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₅) has received worldwide interest owing to its facile accessibility, metal-free nature, and appealing electronic band structure. This review summarizes the latest progress for g-C₃N₅-based photocatalysts in energy and environmental applications. It begins with the synthesis of pristine g-C₃N₅ materials with various topologies, followed by several engineering strategies for g-C₃N₅, such as elemental doping, defect engineering, and heterojunction creation. In addition, the applications in energy conversion (H₂ evolution, CO₂ reduction, and N₂ fixation) and environmental remediation (NO purification and aqueous pollutant degradation) are discussed. Finally, a summary and some inspiring perspectives on the challenges and possibilities of g-C₃N₅-based materials are presented. It is believed that this review will promote the development of emerging g-C₃N₅-based photocatalysts for more efficiency in energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Uranium Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Aerogel-Based Adsorbents-A Critical Review

Aerogels are a class of lightweight, nanoporous, and nanostructured materials with diverse chemical compositions and a huge potential for applications in a broad spectrum of fields. This has led the IUPAC to include them in the top ten emerging technologies in chemistry for 2022. This review provides an overview of aerogel-based adsorbents that have been used for the removal and recovery of uranium from aqueous environments, as well as an insight into the physicochemical parameters affecting the adsorption efficiency and mechanism. Uranium removal is of particular interest regarding uranium analysis and recovery, to cover the present and future uranium needs for nuclear power energy production. Among the methods used, such as ion exchange, precipitation, and solvent extraction, adsorption-based technologies are very attractive due to their easy and low-cost implementation, as well as the wide spectrum of adsorbents available. Aerogel-based adsorbents present an extraordinary sorption capacity for hexavalent uranium that can be as high as 8.8 mol kg−1 (2088 g kg−1). The adsorption data generally follow the Langmuir isotherm model, and the kinetic data are in most cases better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. An evaluation of the thermodynamic data reveals that the adsorption is generally an endothermic, entropy-driven process (ΔH0, ΔS0 > 0). Spectroscopic studies (e.g., FTIR and XPS) indicate that the adsorption is based on the formation of inner-sphere complexes between surface active moieties and the uranyl cation. Regeneration and uranium recovery by acidification and complexation using carbonate or chelating ligands (e.g., EDTA) have been found to be successful. The application of aerogel-based adsorbents to uranium removal from industrial processes and uranium-contaminated waste waters was also successful, assuming that these materials could be very attractive as adsorbents in water treatment and uranium recovery technologies. However, the selectivity of the studied materials towards hexavalent uranium is limited, suggesting further developments of aerogel materials that could be modified by surface derivatization with chelating agents (e.g., salophen and iminodiacetate) presenting high selectivity for uranyl moieties.
