Multifunctional sodium lignosulfonate/xanthan gum/sodium alginate/polyacrylamide ionic hydrogels composite as a high-performance wearable strain sensor

Recently, conductive hydrogels have shown great promise in flexible electronics and are ideal materials for the preparation of wearable strain sensors. However, developing a simple method to produce conductive hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties, self-adhesion, transparency, anti-freezing, and UV resistance remains a significant challenge. A novel sodium lignosulfonate/xanthan gum/sodium alginate/polyacrylamide/Zn2+/DMSO (SLS/XG/SA/PAM/Zn2+/DMSO) ionic conductive hydrogel was developed using a one-pot method. The resulting ionic conductive hydrogels have excellent mechanical properties (stress: 0.13 MPa, strain: 1629 %), high anti-fatigue properties, self-adhesion properties (iron: 7.37 kPa, pigskin: 4.74 kPa), anti-freezing (freezing point: -33.49 °C) and UV resistance by constructing a chemical and physical hybrid cross-linking network. In particular, the conductivity of G hydrogel reached 6.02 S/m at room temperature and 5.52 S/m at -20 °C. Thus, the hydrogel was assembled into a flexible sensor that could distinguish a variety of large and small scales human movements, such as joint bending, swallowing and speaking in real time with high stability and sensitivity. Moreover, the hydrogel could be used as electronic skin just like human skin and touch screen pen to write.

Bipyridine-Confined Silver Single-Atom Catalysts Facilitate In-Plane C-O Coupling for Propylene Electrooxidation

The electrooxidation of propylene presents a promising route for the production of 1,2-propylene glycol (PG) under ambient conditions. However, the C-O coupling process remains a challenge owing to the high energy barrier. In this work, we developed a highly efficient electrocatalyst of bipyridine-confined Ag single atoms on UiO-bpy substrates (Ag SAs/UiO-bpy), which exposed two in-plane coordination vacancies during reaction for the co-adsorption of key intermediates. Detailed structure and electronic property analyses demonstrate that CH3CHCH2OH* and *OH could stably co-adsorb in a square planar configuration, which then accelerates the charge transfer between them. The combination of stable co-adsorption and efficient charge transfer facilitates the C-O coupling process, thus significantly lowering its energy barrier. At 2.4 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, Ag SAs/UiO-bpy achieved a record-high activity of 61.9 gPG m-2 h-1. Our work not only presents a robust electrocatalyst but also advances a new perspective on catalyst design for propylene electrooxidation.

Surface-enhanced Raman database of 24 metabolites: Stable measurement of spectra, extraction and analysis of the main features

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been used in Raman-based metabolomics to provide abundant molecular fingerprint information in situ with extremely high sensitivity, without damaging the sample. However, poor reproducibility, caused by the randomness of the adsorption sites, and the short-range effect of SERS have hindered the development of SERS in metabolomics, resulting in very few SERS reference databases for small-molecule metabolites. In this work, our previously proposed large laser spot-swift mapping SERS method was adopted for the measurement of 24 commercially available metabolite standards, to provide reproducible and reliable references for Raman-based metabolomics study. Among these 24 metabolites, 22 contained no Raman data in PubChem. Other than the SERS spectra data, we extracted and explained the molecular vibration information of these metabolites, and combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we provided a new possibility for the fast Raman recognition of small-molecule metabolites. Accordingly, a large laser spot-swift mapping SERS database of metabolites in human serum was initially established, which contained not only the original spectral data but also other detailed feature information regarding the Raman peaks. With continuous accumulation, this database could play a promising role in Raman-based metabolomics and other Raman-related research.

Eco-friendly Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles and its Application in Hydrogen Photogeneration and Nanoplasmonic Biosensing

Environmentally friendly methods for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesis without the use of hazardous chemicals have recently drawn attention. In this work, AgNPs have been synthesized by microwave irradiation using only honey solutions or aqueous fresh pink radish extracts. The concentrations of honey, radish extract, AgNO3 and pH were varied. AgNPs presented mean sizes between 7.0 and 12.8 nm and were stable up to 120 days. The AgNPs were employed as co-catalyst (TiO2 @AgNPs) to increase the hydrogen photogeneration under UV-vis and only visible light irradiation, when compared to pristine TiO2 NPs. The prepared photocatalyst also showed hydrogen generation under visible light. Additionally, AgNPs were used to assemble a nanoplasmonic biosensor for the biodetection of extremely low concentrations of streptavidin, owing to its specific binding to biotin. It is shown here that green AgNPs are versatile nanomaterials, thus being potential candidates for hydrogen photogeneration and biosensing applications.

A colorimetric and fluorometric dual-mode probe for Cu2+detection based on functionalized silver nanoparticles

A novel colorimetric/fluorescent probe (AgNPs-GSH-Rh6G2) was prepared by linking silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with rhodamine 6G derivative (Rh6G2) using glutathione (GSH) as a linker molecule. The prepared probe showed obvious fluorescence change and colorimetric response after adding copper ions. Based on this phenomenon, a colorimetric/fluorescence dual-mode detection method was constructed to recognize copper ions. The linear ranges of fluorescence detection and colorimetric detection were 0.10 to 0.45 mM and 0.15 to 0.65 mM, respectively, and the limit of detection were 0.18 μM and 24.90 μΜ. In addition, the dual-mode probe has achieved satisfactory results in the detection of copper ions in sediment samples. The successful construction of AgNPs-GSH-Rh6G2 not only provide a reliable tool for the detection of copper ions, but also shed light on a new idea for the multi-mode development of the detection platform.

Improving the hygroscopicity and flame retardancy of polyamide 6 fabrics by surface coating with β-FeOOH and sulfamic acid

The combustion of polyamide 6 (PA6) fabrics releases toxic smoke, which will pollute the environment and threaten human life and health. Herein, a novel eco-friendly flame-retardant coating was constructed and applied to PA6 fabrics. Needle-like β-FeOOH with a high surface area was firstly constructed onto the surface of PA6 fabrics by the hydrolysis of Fe³⁺, sulfamic acid (SA) was then introduced by a facile dipping and nipping method. The growth of β-FeOOH also endowed the PA6 fabrics with certain hydrophilicity and moisture permeability, resulting in improved comfortability. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the prepared PA6/Fe/6SA sample was increased to 27.2% from 18.5% of control PA6 sample, and the damaged length was reduced to only 6.0 cm from 12.0 cm of control PA6 sample. Meanwhile, the melt dripping was also eliminated. The heat release rate and total heat release values of the PA6/Fe/6SA sample were decreased to 318.5 kW/m² and 17.0 MJ/m², respectively, compared with those of control PA6 (494.7 kW/m² and 21.4 MJ/m²). The analysis results indicated that nonflammable gases diluted flammable gases. The observation of char residues demonstrated that the stable char layer was formed, which effectively inhibited the transfer of heat and oxygen. The organic solvent-free coating does not contain any conventional halogens/phosphorus elements, which provides a useful methodology to produce environmentally friendly flame-retardant fabrics.

Insights into Plasmon-Induced Dimerization of Rhodanine-A Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Study

Plasmon-mediated chemical reactions (PMCRs) have attracted considerable interest in recent times. The PMCR initiated by hot carriers is known to be influenced by the type of metals and the excitation wavelength. Herein, we have carried out the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) investigation of rhodanine (Rd), an important pharmacologically active heterocyclic compound, adsorbed on silver and gold nanoparticles (AgNP and AuNP) using 514.5 and 632.8 nm lasers. The prominent Raman band at 1566 cm^-1 observed in the SERS spectra is attributed to the characteristic ν(C═C) stretching vibration of the Rd dimer and not of Rd tautomers. The chemical transformation of Rd to Rd dimer on metal surfaces is plausibly triggered by the indirect transfer of energetic hot electrons generated during the non-radiative decay of plasmon. The mechanism involved in the dimerization of Rd via the indirect transfer of hot electrons is also presented. The effect of wavelength on the dimerization of Rd is also observed on the AgNP surface, which indicates that the dimerization occurs more efficiently on the AgNP surface with excitation at 514.5 nm wavelength.

SERS Determination of Oxidative Stress Markers in Saliva Using Substrates with Silver Nanoparticle-Decorated Silicon Nanowires

Glutathione and malondialdehyde are two compounds commonly used to evaluate the oxidative stress status of an organism. Although their determination is usually performed in blood serum, saliva is gaining ground as the biological fluid of choice for oxidative stress determination at the point of need. For this purpose, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), which is a highly sensitive method for the detection of biomolecules, could offer additional advantages regarding the analysis of biological fluids at the point of need. In this work, silicon nanowires decorated with silver nanoparticles made by metal-assisted chemical etching were evaluated as substrates for the SERS determination of glutathione and malondialdehyde in water and saliva. In particular, glutathione was determined by monitoring the reduction in the Raman signal obtained from substrates modified with crystal violet upon incubation with aqueous glutathione solutions. On the other hand, malondialdehyde was detected after a reaction with thiobarbituric acid to produce a derivative with a strong Raman signal. The detection limits achieved after optimization of several assay parameters were 50 and 3.2 nM for aqueous solutions of glutathione and malondialdehyde, respectively. In artificial saliva, however, the detection limits were 2.0 and 0.32 μM for glutathione and malondialdehyde, respectively, which are, nonetheless, adequate for the determination of these two markers in saliva.

Polyurethane and cellulose acetate micro-nanofibers containing rosemary essential oil, and decorated with silver nanoparticles for wound healing application

In this study, polyurethane (PU) and cellulose acetate (CA) electrospun fibers encapsulating rosemary essential oil (REO) and adsorbed silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated. The biologically inspired materials were analyzed for physicochemical characteristics using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle, and water uptake studies. Results confirmed the presence of CA and Ag NPs on the PU micro-nanofibers increased the hydrophilicity from 107.1 ± 0.36^o to 26.35 ± 1.06^o. The water absorption potential increased from 0.07 ± 0.04 for pristine PU fibers to 12.43 ± 0.49 % for fibers with 7 wt% of CA, REO, and Ag NPs. The diffractometer confirmed the 2θ of 38.01°, 44.13^o, and 64.33^o, corresponding to the diffraction planes of Ag on the fibers. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed microfibers interfacial chemical interaction and surface changes due to CA, REO, and Ag presence. The inhibition tests on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli indicated that composites are antibacterial in activity. Moreover, synergistic interactions of REO and Ag NPs resulted in superior antibacterial activity. The cell viability and attachment assay showed improved hydrophilicity of the fibers, which resulted in better attachment of cells to the micro-nanofibers, similar to the natural extracellular matrix in the human body.

Hierarchically structural layered double oxides with stretchable nanopores for highly effective removal of protein-bound uremic toxins

The global outbreak and prevalence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has triggered an urgent demand for family hemodialysis equipment. It is particularly vital to design and apply superior adsorbents to adsorb toxins for reducing the usage of dialysate. In this work, hierarchically structural MgAl layered double oxides (LDO) with stretchable nanopores were exploited through a facile one-pot trisodium citrate (TSC) assistant hydrothermal reaction followed by calcination treatment for effectively adsorbing protein-bound uremic toxins such as hippuric acid (HA) or indoxyl sulfate (IS). The optimized MgAl LDO possessed flower-like spherical morphology, ultrahigh specific surface area (187.3 m²/g) and uniquely stretchable nanopores, which were more conducive to incorporating anions due to their unique memory effect endowing them with promising adsorption capacities for HA or IS. And the adsorption data could be better conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm determining that the maximum adsorption capacity of HA and IS was 129.8 mg/g and 63.1 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the computation of molecular size paired with the analysis of adsorption mechanism accurately revealed that high-efficiency toxin capture was mainly attributed to electrostatic interaction for internal intercalation and surface adsorption. Therefore, the application of such delicate LDO as new premium adsorbent would facilitate the development and popularization of family hemodialysis equipment.

DFT and TD-DFT Study of the Chemical Effect in the SERS Spectra of Piperidine Adsorbed on Silver Colloidal Nanoparticles

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of piperidine adsorbed on silver/chloride colloids were studied by a combined density functional theory (DFT)/time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) approach. The mechanism of chemical enhancement on the Raman signals is due to at least two contributions: the first comes from the changes in the molecular force constants and the dynamic polarizabilities of the normal modes, when the molecule is chemisorbed. DFT calculations satisfactorily reproduce the SERS spectra of piperidine adsorbed on silver, showing that the species formed on the silver particle is a complex formed by a deprotonated piperidine linked to a silver cation. A second contribution to the SERS chemical enhancement is due to a resonance Raman effect occurring when the wavelength of the Raman excitation falls within the electronic excitation band of the molecule/metal complex. Actually, the SERS spectra of piperidine show a significant dependence on the wavelength of the laser excitation, with a marked enhancement in the green-light region. TD-DFT calculations on the most-probable complex explain this behavior, because a strong excitation band of the complex is calculated in the green spectral region. This pinpoints that a resonance between the exciting radiation and the absorption band of this complex is responsible for this enhancement effect.

Solution NMR methods for structural and thermodynamic investigation of nanoparticle adsorption equilibria

Characterization of dynamic processes occurring at the nanoparticle (NP) surface is crucial for developing new and more efficient NP catalysts and materials. Thus, a vast amount of research has been dedicated to developing techniques to characterize sorption equilibria. Over recent years, solution NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a preferred tool for investigating ligand-NP interactions. Indeed, due to its ability to probe exchange dynamics over a wide range of timescales with atomic resolution, solution NMR can provide structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic information on sorption equilibria involving multiple adsorbed species and intermediate states. In this contribution, we review solution NMR methods for characterizing ligand-NP interactions, and provide examples of practical applications using these methods as standalone techniques. In addition, we illustrate how the integrated analysis of several NMR datasets was employed to elucidate the role played by support-substrate interactions in mediating the phenol hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by ceria-supported Pd nanoparticles.

Amino acid-mediated negatively charged surface improve antifouling and tribological characteristics for medical applications

To prevent infections associated with biomedical catheters, various antimicrobial coatings have been investigated. However, those materials do not provide consistent antibacterial effects or biocompatibility, generally, due to degradation of the coating materials, in vivo. Additionally, biomedical catheters must have low surface friction to reduce tribological damage. In this study, we developed an antifouling surface composed of biocompatible amino acids (leucine, taurine, and aspartic acid) on polyimide, via modification using a series of facile immersion steps with waterborne reactions. The naturally derived amino acid could be formed highly biostable amide bonds on the polyimide surface like peptides. The amino acid-modified surface formed a water layer with antifouling performance through the hydrophilic properties of amino acids. Amino acid-mediated modification reduced adhesion up to 84.45% and 94.81% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, respectively, and exhibited an excellent prevention to adhesion against the proteins, albumin and fibrinogen. Evaluation of the surface friction of the catheter revealed a dramatic reduction in the tribological force after amino acid modification on polyimide that of 0.81 N to aspartic acid of 0.44 N. These results clearly demonstrate a reduced occurrence of infections, thrombi and tribological damage following the relatively facile surface modification of catheters. The proposed modification method can be used in a continuous manufacturing process via using the same time of modification steps for the easy producing the product. Moreover, the method uses biocompatible naturally derived materials and can be applied to medical equipment that requires biocompatibility and biofunctionality with polyimide surfaces.

Evaluation of Antibacterial Effects of Matrix-Induced Silver Ions against Antibiotic-Resistant ESKAPE Pathogens

Recently, drug-resistant bacterial infections, especially ESKAPE pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp.), have become a critical health issue worldwide, highlighting the emerging need for novel antibacterial agents. In this study, silver nanoparticles were extracted from silver-containing mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG-Ag) using four different matrixes, including water, phosphate buffer saline (PBS), tryptic soy broth (TSB), and taurine (Tau). The inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) results demonstrated that the silver concentration of Tau-Ag was the highest among the four matrixes. The Tau-Ag was also observed to have 87.35% silver ions in its X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) spectra. The micrograph of transmission electron microscope (TEM) displayed a uniform distribution of silver nanoparticles, which was confined in a smaller size compared to that in TSB-Ag. Moreover, the peak shifts observed in the Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) spectrum implied that the -SO₃²⁻ and -NH groups in taurine may interact with silver. A low cytotoxicity was noted for Tau-Ag, with approximately 70% of cells surviving at 0.63 mg/mL. Compared to the other three matrix-induced silver agents, Tau-Ag represented a better antibacterial effect against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.63 mg/mL and a postponed growth of 0.31 mg/mL observed. Further antibacterial examinations illustrated the presence of remarkable antibacterial activities against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus feacium, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Given our observations and multiple bioactive functions of taurine (prevent patients from inflammation and oxidative-stress injuries), we anticipate that taurine matrix-induced silver ions would be a biomedical material with a high potential for combatting drug-resistant ESKAPE pathogens.

Elastic Properties of Taurine Single Crystals Studied by Brillouin Spectroscopy

The inelastic interaction between the incident photons and acoustic phonons in the taurine single crystal was investigated by using Brillouin spectroscopy. Three acoustic phonons propagating along the crystallographic b-axis were investigated over a temperature range of −185 to 175 °C. The temperature dependences of the sound velocity, the acoustic absorption coefficient, and the elastic constants were determined for the first time. The elastic behaviors could be explained based on normal lattice anharmonicity. No evidence for the structural phase transition was observed, consistent with previous structural studies. The birefringence in the ac-plane indirectly estimated from the split longitudinal acoustic modes was consistent with one theoretical calculation by using the extrapolation of the measured dielectric functions in the infrared range.

Silver Covalently Bound to Cyanographene Overcomes Bacterial Resistance to Silver Nanoparticles and Antibiotics

The ability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics is threatening one of the pillars of modern medicine. It was recently understood that bacteria can develop resistance even to silver nanoparticles by starting to produce flagellin, a protein which induces their aggregation and deactivation. This study shows that silver covalently bound to cyanographene (GCN/Ag) kills silver-nanoparticle-resistant bacteria at concentrations 30 times lower than silver nanoparticles, a challenge which has been so far unmet. Tested also against multidrug resistant strains, the antibacterial activity of GCN/Ag is systematically found as potent as that of free ionic silver or 10 nm colloidal silver nanoparticles. Owing to the strong and multiple dative bonds between the nitrile groups of cyanographene and silver, as theory and experiments confirm, there is marginal silver ion leaching, even after six months of storage, and thus very high cytocompatibility to human cells. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest strong interaction of GCN/Ag with the bacterial membrane, and as corroborated by experiments, the antibacterial activity does not rely on the release of silver nanoparticles or ions. Endowed with these properties, GCN/Ag shows that rigid supports selectively and densely functionalized with potent silver-binding ligands, such as cyanographene, may open new avenues against microbial resistance.

Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid (TUDCA)-Lipid Interactions and Antioxidant Properties of TUDCA Studied in Model of Photoreceptor Membranes

Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), a hydrophilic bile acid containing taurine conjugated with the ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), has been known and used from ancient times as a therapeutic compound in traditional Chinese medicine. TUDCA has recently been gaining significant interest as a neuroprotective agent, also exploited in the visual disorders. Among several mechanisms of TUDCA's protective action, its antioxidant activity and stabilizing effect on mitochondrial and plasma membranes are considered. In this work we investigated antioxidant activity of TUDCA and its impact on structural properties of model membranes of different composition using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the spin labeling technique. Localization of TUDCA molecules in a pure POPC bilayer has been studied using a molecular dynamics simulation (MD). The obtained results indicate that TUDCA is not an efficient singlet oxygen (1O2 (1Δg)) quencher, and the determined rate constant of its interaction with 1O2 (1Δg) is only 1.9 × 105 M-1s-1. However, in lipid oxidation process induced by a Fenton reaction, TUDCA reveals substantial antioxidant activity significantly decreasing the rate of oxygen consumption in the system studied. In addition, TUDCA induces slight, but noticeable changes in the polarity and fluidity of the investigated model membranes. The results of performed MD simulation correspond very well with the experimental results.

Porous Hybrids Structure between Silver Nanoparticle and Layered Double Hydroxide for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Silver nanoparticle (AgNP), in terms of antibacterial, catalytic, electronic, and optical applications, is an attractive material. Especially, when prepared to furnish sharp edge and systematic particle orientation on the substrate, AgNPs can take advantage of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this research, we suggested a synthetic method to immobilize the AgNP on metal oxide by utilizing Ag-thiolate and layered double hydroxide (LDH) as precursor and template, respectively. The layer-by-layer structure of LDH and Ag-thiolate transformed through reductive calcination to metal oxide and AgNP array. Physicochemical characterization, including powder X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption–desorption, microscopies, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealed that the AgNP with sufficient crystallinity and particle gap was obtained at relatively high calcination temperature, ~600 °C. UV-vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy showed that the calcination temperature affected particle size and electronic structure of AgNP. The prepared materials were subjected to SERS tests toward 4-nitrothiophenol (4-NTP). The sample obtained at 600 °C exhibited 50 times higher substrate enhancement factor (SEF) than the one obtained at 400 °C, suggesting that the calcination temperature was a determining parameter to enhance SERS activity in current synthetic condition.

Small AgNP in the Biopolymer Nanocomposite System

In this work, ultra-small and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNP) on chitosan biopolymer (BP/AgP) were prepared by in situ reduction of the diamminesilver(I) complex ([Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺) to create a biostatic membrane system. The small AgNP (3 nm) as a stable source of silver ions, their crystal form, and homogeneous distribution in the whole solid membrane were confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger analysis were applied to investigate the elemental composition, concentration, and chemical state of surface atoms. It was found that ultra-small metallic nanoparticles might form a steady source of silver ions and enhance the biostatic properties of solid membranes. Ultra-small AgNP with disturbed electronic structure and plasmonic properties may generate interaction between amine groups of the biopolymer for improving the homogeneity of the nanometallic layer. In this work, the significant differences between the typical way (deposition of ex-situ-prepared AgNP) and the proposed in-situ synthesis approach were determined. The improved thermal stability (by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG/DSC) analysis) for BP/AgP was observed and explained by the presence of the protective layer of a low-molecular silver phase. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the BP/AgP nanocomposite was tested using selected bacteria biofilms. The grafted membrane showed clear inhibition properties by destruction and multiple damages of bacteria cells. The possible mechanisms of biocidal activity were discussed, and the investigation of the AgNP influence on the bacteria body was illustrated by AFM measurements. The results obtained concluded that the biopolymer membrane properties were significantly improved by the integration with ultra-small Ag nanoparticles, which added value to its applications as a biostatic membrane system for filtration and separation issues.

Silver nanoparticles: Synthesis, investigation techniques, and properties

The unique silver properties, especially in the form of nanoparticles (NPs), allow to utilize them in numerous applications. For instance, Ag NPs can be utilized for the production of electronic and solar energy harvesting devices, in advanced analytical techniques (NALDI, SERS), catalysis and photocatalysis. Moreover, the Ag NPs can be useful in medicine for bioimaging, biosensing as well as in antibacterial and anticancer therapies. The Ag NPs utilization requires comprehensive knowledge about their features regarding the synthesis approaches as well as exploitation conditions. Unfortunately, a large number of scientific articles provide only restricted information according to the objects under investigation. Additionally, the results could be affected by artifacts introduced with exploited equipment, the utilized technique or sample preparation stages. However, it is rather difficult to get information about problems, which may occur during the studies. Thus, the review provides information about novel trends in the Ag NPs synthesis, among which the physical, chemical, and biological approaches can be found. Basic information about approaches for the control of critical parameters of NPs, i.e. size and shape, was also revealed. It was shown, that the reducing agent, stabilizer, the synthesis environment, including trace ions, have a direct impact on the Ag NPs properties. Further, the capabilities of modern analytical techniques for Ag NPs and nanocomposites investigations were shown, among other microscopic (optical, TEM, SEM, STEM, AFM), spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR, Raman, NMR, electron spectroscopy, XRD), spectrometric (MALDI-TOF MS, SIMS, ICP-MS), and separation (CE, FFF, gel electrophoresis) techniques were described. The limitations and possible artifacts of the techniques were mentioned. A large number of presented techniques is a distinguishing feature, which makes the review different from others. Finally, the physicochemical and biological properties of Ag NPs were demonstrated. It was shown, that Ag NPs features are dependent on their basic parameters, such as size, shape, chemical composition, etc. At the end of the review, the modern theories of the Ag NPs toxic mechanism were shown in a way that has never been presented before. The review should be helpful for scientists in their own studies, as it can help to prepare experiments more carefully.

Applying a Nanoparticle@MOF Interface To Activate an Unconventional Regioselectivity of an Inert Reaction at Ambient Conditions

Here we design an interface between a metal nanoparticle (NP) and a metal-organic framework (MOF) to activate an inert CO₂ carboxylation reaction and in situ monitor its unconventional regioselectivity at the molecular level. Using a Kolbe-Schmitt reaction as model, our strategy exploits the NP@MOF interface to create a pseudo high-pressure CO₂ microenvironment over the phenolic substrate to drive its direct C-H carboxylation at ambient conditions. Conversely, Kolbe-Schmitt reactions usually demand high reaction temperature (>125 °C) and pressure (>80 atm). Notably, we observe an unprecedented CO₂ meta-carboxylation of an arene that was previously deemed impossible in traditional Kolbe-Schmitt reactions. While the phenolic substrate in this study is fixed at the NP@MOF interface to facilitate spectroscopic investigations, free reactants could be activated the same way by the local pressurized CO₂ microenvironment. These valuable insights create enormous opportunities in diverse applications including synthetic chemistry, gas valorization, and greenhouse gas remediation.

Synthesis, characterization and investigation of synergistic antibacterial activity and cell viability of silver-sulfur doped graphene quantum dot (Ag@S-GQDs) nanocomposites

The excessive use of traditional antibiotic and antibacterial agents has globally increased the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that poses serious health risks. Therefore, the development of new generation antibacterial or antimicrobial agents for effective inhibition of bacterial growth is highly desired. In this study, we report a facile one-step synthesis approach for the preparation of a nanocomposite composed of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) decorated with sulfur-doped graphene quantum dots (S-GQDs). The nanocomposite was comprehensively characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectra, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The characterization results demonstrated that the AgNPs were closely and uniformly surrounded by the S-GQDs, and consequently, this ensured the dispersion and stability of the so formed nanocomposite (Ag@S-GQDs). Further, the antibacterial activity of the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite was investigated and compared with bare S-GQDs and AgNPs against Gram-positive S. aureus (MTCC 737) and Gram-negative P. aeruginosa (MTCC 424) bacteria using macrodilution and agar well diffusion methods. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 70 and 35 μg mL^-1 of the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite were found to be sufficient to hinder the growth of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. A fractional inhibition concentration (FIC) index below 0.5 confirmed the existence of a synergistic effect between AgNPs and S-GQDs in the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite, AgNPs and S-GQDs was also investigated using HEK 293 cell lines. Interestingly, the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite exhibited superior cell viability as compared to AgNPs and S-GQDs. These improved antibacterial and biocompatibility data demonstrate that the Ag@S-GQDs nanocomposite can serve as a promising antibacterial agent for industry to fabricate next-generation self-sterile textiles, antibacterial coatings and useful health care products supporting cell viability.

Redox-Active Tyrosine-Mediated Peptide Template for Large-Scale Single-Crystalline Two-Dimensional Silver Nanosheets

Although self-assembly of various peptides has been widely applied, it is challenging to obtain single-crystalline and layer-by-layered nanostructures in a two-dimensional system. Here, we report a method for controlling the morphology and crystal growth at room temperature by a redox-active peptide template that can specifically co-assemble with metal ions. During the crystal growth, a silver ion-coordinated α-helical peptide (+3HN-YYACAYY-COO-) induces long-range atomic ordering at the air/water interface, which leads to multilayered single-crystalline silver nanosheets without an additional annealing process. Furthermore, this peptide template can facilitate efficient electron transfer between the independent metal nanosheets to improve electrochemical properties. We expect that this peptide template-based single-crystal growth method can be extended to synthesize other materials.

Biosynthesis and Antibacterial Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Using Yeast Extract as Reducing and Capping Agents

Biosynthesis for the preparation of antimicrobial silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is a green method without the use of cytotoxic reducing and surfactant agents. Herein, shape-controlled and well-dispersed Ag NPs were biosynthesized using yeast extract as reducing and capping agents. The synthesized Ag NPs exhibited a uniform spherical shape and fine size, with an average size of 13.8 nm. The biomolecules of reductive amino acids, alpha-linolenic acid, and carbohydrates in yeast extract have a significant role in the formation of Ag NPs, which was proved by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. In addition, amino acids on the surface of Ag NPs carry net negative charges which maximize the electrostatic repulsion interactions in alkaline solution, providing favorable stability for more than a year without precipitation. The Ag NPs in combination treatment with ampicillin reversed the resistance in ampicillin-resistant E. coli cells. These monodispersed Ag NPs could be a promising alternative for the disinfection of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, and they showed negligible cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility toward Cos-7 cells.

A Novel Approach towards Synthesis and Characterization of Non-Cytotoxic Gold Nanoparticles Using Taurine as Capping Agent

Metal gold nanoparticles are of great interest due to their unique physico-chemical properties and their potential to be used as nano-probes in biosensors, drug delivery, and therapeutic applications. Currently, many capping agents are used for metal gold nanoparticles, such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and tri-sodium citrate that have been reported to be toxic and hinders biological applications. To address this issue, we report, for the first time, the use of taurine as a stable non-cytotoxic capping agent for synthesizing gold nanoparticles by using an in situ wet-chemical method. This facile method resulted in monodisperse gold nanospheres with a high yield and stability. Monodisperse gold nanospheres with average diameters of 6.9 nm and 46 nm were synthesized at a high yield with controlled morphology. Temperature played a critical role in determining the size of the taurine-capped gold nanoparticles. The subtle changes in the reaction parameters had a tremendous effect on the final size of nanoparticles and their stability. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by using optical spectroscopy, a ZetaSizer, a NanoSight, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photon Spectroscopy (XPS) and Electron Microscopy to understand their physico-chemical properties. Taurine was explored as a capping and stabilizing agent for gold nanospheres, which were evaluated for their toxicity responses towards human liver carcinoma cells (HepG2) via MTT assay.

Plasmon-Induced Dimerization of Thiazolidine-2,4-dione on Silver Nanoparticles: Revealed by Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Study

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) study carried on thiazolidine-2,4-dione (TZD), a pharmacologically active heterocyclic compound, points to the presence of TZD dimer formed by plasmon-induced dimerization reaction of TZD on the surface of silver nanoparticles (Ag NP) at TZD concentrations of 10^-3 M and above. The evidence for the presence of dimer was obtained from the appearance of a prominent band at 1566 cm^-1 corresponding to the ν(C═C) band (a characteristic vibrational band observed for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction products) which is absent in the normal Raman scattering (NRS) spectra of TZD solid/solution. The observed spectrum compares well with the calculated spectrum of dimer obtained using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The dimerization reaction is plausibly induced by the transfer of hot electrons generated by the nonradiative plasmon decay of Ag NP, and the proposed reaction mechanism is discussed. However, at lower concentrations (10^-4-10^-6 M), the characteristic dimer peak (1566 cm^-1) is absent and the SERS spectra resemble more the NRS spectrum of TZD with a few changes. The spectral analysis supported by DFT calculations showed that TZD molecules undergo deprotonation and get adsorbed on the Ag NP surface as enolate forms. The proximity of TZD molecules on the surface of Ag NP is a necessary factor for the dimerization to occur. At lower concentrations, most molecules lie apart and reactions between molecules become less feasible, and they remain as monomers on the surface, while at higher concentrations the molecules are closer to each other on the Ag NP surface favoring the dimerization reaction to take place, leading to the formation of the dimer.

Wood Protection through Plasma Powder Deposition—An Alternative Coating Process

In contrast to conventional coating processes such as varnishing, plasma powder deposition by means of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet on wood is not yet widely used. A key advantage of this process is that volatile organic compounds and organic solvents are avoided. In the present work, European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) were coated with polymer (polyester), metal (aluminum coated silver) or metal oxide (bismuth oxide) particles. Furthermore, a layer system consisting of polyester and metal or metal oxide was investigated. The layer thickness and topography were analyzed with a laser scanning microscope and scanning electron microscope, revealing thicknesses of 2–22 µm depending on the coating material. In general, the chemical composition of the layers was determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy measurements. The coatings consisting of metal and metal oxide showed a band gap and plasmon resonance in the range of 540 and 450 nm. Through this absorption, the wood may be protected against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the water uptake and release tests, the polyester layers exhibited a reduction of water vapor absorption after 24 h in 100% relative humidity (RH) by 53%–66%, whereas the pure metal oxide layers indicated the best desorption performance. The combination of metal oxide and polyester in the one-layer system combines the protection properties of the single coatings against water vapor and UV radiation.

Raman and Computational Study on the Adsorption of Xanthine on Silver Nanocolloids

Xanthine is a nucleobase, deriving from adenine and guanine by deamination and oxidation processes, which may deposit in the human body causing diseases, similar to uric acid. Here, we have investigated the adsorption of xanthine on silver colloidal nanoparticles by means of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) with an exciting radiation in the near-infrared spectral region, where interference due to fluorescence does not occur, along with density functional theory calculations of molecule/metal model systems. By adopting a combined experimental and computational approach, we have identified the "marker" SERS bands of xanthine and the tautomer that preferentially binds the silver particles, as well as the molecular group involved in the interaction with metal. This investigation allows using the FT-SERS spectroscopy for biosensory and diagnostic purposes in body fluids, detecting abnormal levels of xanthine, and preventing metabolic diseases.

SERS active Ag-SiO2 nanoparticles obtained by laser ablation of silver in colloidal silica

Highly stable Ag-SiO₂ nanoparticle composites were first obtained by laser ablation of a silver target in an aqueous colloidal dispersion of silica and examined by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of these nanocomposites was tested using 2,2'-bipyridine as a molecular reporter and excitation in the visible and near-IR spectral regions. The computational DFT approach provided evidence of ligand adsorption on positively charged adatoms of the silver nanostructured surface, in a very similar way to the metal/molecule interaction occurring in the corresponding Ag(I) coordination compound.

Characterization techniques for nanoparticles: comparison and complementarity upon studying nanoparticle properties

Nanostructures have attracted huge interest as a rapidly growing class of materials for many applications. Several techniques have been used to characterize the size, crystal structure, elemental composition and a variety of other physical properties of nanoparticles. In several cases, there are physical properties that can be evaluated by more than one technique. Different strengths and limitations of each technique complicate the choice of the most suitable method, while often a combinatorial characterization approach is needed. In addition, given that the significance of nanoparticles in basic research and applications is constantly increasing, it is necessary that researchers from separate fields overcome the challenges in the reproducible and reliable characterization of nanomaterials, after their synthesis and further process (e.g. annealing) stages. The principal objective of this review is to summarize the present knowledge on the use, advances, advantages and weaknesses of a large number of experimental techniques that are available for the characterization of nanoparticles. Different characterization techniques are classified according to the concept/group of the technique used, the information they can provide, or the materials that they are destined for. We describe the main characteristics of the techniques and their operation principles and we give various examples of their use, presenting them in a comparative mode, when possible, in relation to the property studied in each case.

Infrared dispersion analysis and Raman scattering spectra of taurine single crystals

A comprehensive set of optical vibrational modes of monoclinic taurine crystals was determined by Raman scattering, and infrared reflectivity and transmission spectroscopies. By using appropriate scattering/reflection geometries, the vibrational modes were resolved by polarization and the most relevant modes of the crystal could be assigned. In particular, we were able to review the symmetry of the gerade modes and to resolve ambiguities in the literature. Owing to the non-orthogonal character of B_u modes in monoclinic crystals (lying on the optic axial plane), we carried out a generalized Lorentz dispersion analysis consisting of simultaneous adjust of infrared-reflectivity spectra at various light polarization angles. The A_u modes (parallel to the C₂-axis) were treated within the classical Lorentz model. The behavior of off-diagonal and diagonal terms of the complex dielectric tensors and the presence of anomalous dispersion were discussed as consequences of the low symmetry of the crystal.
