Abstract
An efficient method for the direct alkylamination of tyrosine derivatives via iron-catalyzed C-H amination has been developed. The method, using O-benzoyl-N,N-dialkylhydroxylamines as aminating agents, provides various C-amino-functionalized tyrosine derivatives in up to 77% yield. The utility of this method is showcased by its application to the direct introduction of drug molecules into tyrosine, facilitating access to structurally diverse amino-functionalized tyrosine derivatives.

Abstract
Octahedral ruthenium(II) complexes of a xanthene-di(N-heterocyclic carbene) ancillary ligand (XdC) have been prepared and structurally characterized. Examples catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of ketones {[Ru(CO)I2(C,O,C'-XdC)] (1) and [Ru(CO)(MeCN)2(C,O,C'-XdC)]2+ (22+)} and the selective electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO {[Ru(N,N'-bpy)(CO)(C,O,C'-XdC)]2+ (32+) at 0.40 V overpotential in MeCN-H2O (1 M)}. The reaction of 1 with KBEt3H afforded isomers of [(C,C'-XdC)Ru(μ-H)(H)]2 dimers, which are stable to reductive elimination of the XdC ligand, thereby suggesting similar (XdC)Rh(coligand)(H)x species may be viable intermediates in catalyses. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 involves a double reduction of 32+ to 3••, which has been characterized by IR-SEC and DFT calculations. The DFT calculations suggest the Ru-Oxanth bond breaks in 3••, opening a metal site for CO2 binding with selectivity over protons enabled by the diffuse nature of the HOMO delocalized over the metal and the bipyridine and carbonyl coligands. The results point to the promise of metal complexes of flexible and hemilabile xanthene-(NHC)2 ancillary ligands in catalysis.

Abstract
The Pd-Xantphos-mediated 11C-carbonylation protocol (also known as the "Xantphos- method"), due to its simplistic and convenient nature, has facilitated researchers in meeting a longstanding need for preparing 11C-carbonyl-labeled radiopharmaceuticals at ambient pressure for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and drug discovery. This development could be viewed as a breakthrough in carbon-11 chemistry, as evidenced by the rapid global adoption of the method by the pharmaceutical industry and academic laboratories worldwide. The method has been fully automated for the good manufacturing practice (GMP)-compliant production of novel radiopharmaceuticals for human use, and it has been adapted for "in-loop" reactions and microwave technology; an impressive number of 11C-labeled compounds (>100) have been synthesized. Given the simplicity and efficiency of the method, as well as the abundance of carbonyl groups in bioactive drug molecules, we expect that this methodology will be even more widely adopted in future PET radiopharmaceutical research and drug development.

Abstract
Secondary phosphines are important building blocks in organic chemistry as their reactive P-H bond enables construction of more elaborate molecules. In particular, they can be used to construct tertiary phosphines that have widespread applications as organocatalysts, and as ligands in metal-complex catalysis. We report here a practical synthesis of the bulky secondary phosphine synthon 2,2,6,6-tetramethylphosphinane (TMPhos). Its nitrogen analogue tetramethylpiperidine, known for over a century, is used as a base in organic chemistry. We obtained TMPhos on a multigram scale from an inexpensive air-stable precursor, ammonium hypophosphite. TMPhos is also a close structural relative of di-tert-butylphosphine, a key component of many important catalysts. Herein we also describe the synthesis of key derivatives of TMPhos, with potential applications ranging from CO2 conversion to cross-coupling and beyond. The availability of a new core phosphine building block opens up a diverse array of opportunities in catalysis.

Abstract
Carbenes are highly active reaction intermediates, which can be used as reaction precursors to modify organisms, drugs, and material molecules. In this work, we realized a new cheap metal-catalyzed carbonylation of carbene to give propanedioic acid derivatives. With copper salt as the catalyst, synthetically important malonates and related compounds were produced in good yields under mild reaction conditions.

Abstract
Reductive cyclization of enynes and diynes by using H2 gas as a reductant was realized, and the corresponding cyclized products were obtained in good yields without olefin isomerization and over-reduction of the products. By an experiment using D2 instead of H2, it was confirmed that H2 unambiguously operates as a reductant in this reaction. The protocol of the reaction is very economical and user-friendly, using air- and moisture-stable CoBr2·6H2O and 1 atm of pressure of H2.

Abstract
A nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction that allowed transition-metal-free C-P bond construction via C-N bond cleavage was developed. The coupling between aryltrimethylammonium salts and secondary phosphines from the in situ reduction of diarylphosphine oxides led to the formation of diverse triarylphosphines with various functional groups. This one-pot process was not only a pertinent SNAr precedent but also a favorable transition-metal-free alternative for C-P coupling.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world's most deadly infectious diseases resulting in nearly 1.3 million deaths annually and infecting nearly one-quarter of the population. para-Aminosalicylic acid (PAS), an important second-line agent for treating drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has moderate bioavailability and rapid clearance that necessitate high daily doses of up to 12 g per day, which in turn causes severe gastrointestinal disturbances presumably by disruption of gut microbiota and host epithelial cells. We first synthesized a series of alkyl, acyloxy and alkyloxycarbonyloxyalkyl ester prodrugs to increase the oral bioavailability and thereby prevent intestinal accumulation as well as undesirable bioactivation by the gut microbiome to non-natural folate species that exhibit cytotoxicity. The pivoxyl prodrug of PAS was superior to all of the prodrugs examined and showed nearly quantitative absorption. While the conceptually simple prodrug approach improved the oral bioavailability of PAS, it did not address the intrinsic rapid clearance of PAS mediated by N-acetyltransferase-1 (NAT-1). Thus, we next modified the PAS scaffold to reduce NAT-1 catalyzed inactivation by introduction of groups to sterically block N-acetylation and fluorination of the aryl ring of PAS to attenuate N-acetylation by electronically deactivating the para-amino group. Among the mono-fluorinated analogs prepared, 5-fluoro-PAS, exhibited the best activity and an 11-fold decreased rate of inactivation by NAT-1 that translated to a 5-fold improved exposure as measured by area-under-the-curve (AUC) following oral dosing to CD-1 mice. The pivoxyl prodrug and fluorination at the 5-position of PAS address the primary limitations of PAS and have the potential to revitalize this second-line TB drug.

Abstract
A highly (Z)-selective hydroboration of terminal alkynes was achieved using a thioxanthene-based PSP-pincer rhodium catalyst. This hydroboration exhibited good chemoselectivity toward alkynes over carbonyl compounds such as ketones and aldehydes. The mechanistic studies indicated the involvement of rhodium-vinylidene intermediates, and the high (Z)-selectivity could be attributed to the rigid and electron-rich nature of the PSP-rhodium catalyst.

Abstract
Thiocarbonylation of alkynes offers an ideal procedure for the synthesis of unsaturated thioesters. A robust ligand-controlled regioselective thiocarbonylation of alkynes is developed. Utilizing boronic acid and 5-chlorosalicylic acid as the acid additive to in situ form 5-chloroborosalicylic acid (5-Cl-BSA), and bis(2-diphenylphosphinophenyl)ether (DPEphos) as the ligand, linear α,β-unsaturated thioesters were produced in a straightforward manner. Switching the ligand to tri(2-furyl)phosphine can turn the reaction selectivity to give branched products. Remarkably, this approach also represents the first example on thiocarbonylation of internal alkynes.

Abstract
Performing carbonylation without the use of carbon monoxide for high-value-added products is an attractive yet challenging topic in sustainable chemistry. Herein, effective methods for producing linear aldehydes or alcohols selectively with formic acid as both carbon monoxide and hydrogen source have been described. Linear-selective hydroformylation of alkenes proceeds smoothly with up to 88 % yield and >30 regioselectivity in the presence of single Rh catalyst. Strikingly, introducing Ru into the system, the dual Rh/Ru catalysts accomplish efficient and regioselective hydroxymethylation in one pot. The present processes utilizing formic acid as syngas surrogate operate simply under mild condition, which opens a sustainable way for production of linear aldehydes and alcohols without the need for gas cylinders and autoclaves. As formic acid can be readily produced via CO2 hydrogenation, the protocols represent indirect approaches for chemical valorization of CO2 .

Abstract
The synthesis of new Schrock–Osborn Rh(i) pre-catalysts with ortho-substituted DPEphos ligands, [Rh(DPEphos-R)(NBD)][BArF4] [R = Me, OMe, iPr; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3], is described. Along with the previously reported R = H variant, variable temperature 1H NMR spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that these all have axial (C–H)⋯Rh anagostic interactions relative to the d8 pseudo square planar metal centres, that also result in corresponding downfield chemical shifts. Analysis by NBO, QTAIM and NCI methods shows these to be only very weak C–H⋯Rh bonding interactions, the magnitudes of which do not correlate with the observed chemical shifts. Instead, as informed by Scherer's approach, it is the topological positioning of the C–H bond with regard to the metal centre that is important. For [Rh(DPEphos–iPr)(NBD)][BArF4] addition of H2 results in a Rh(iii) iPr–C–H activated product, [Rh(κ3,σ-P,O,P-DPEphos-iPr′)(H)][BArF4]. This undergoes H/D exchange with D2 at the iPr groups, reacts with CO or NBD to return Rh(i) products, and reaction with H3B·NMe3/tert-butylethene results in a dehydrogenative borylation to form a complex that shows both a non-classical B–H⋯Rh 3c-2e agostic bond and a C–H⋯Rh anagostic interaction at the same metal centre. Rh(i) complexes of ortho-substituted DPEphos-R (R = H, Me, OMe, iPr) ligands show anagostic interactions; for R =iPr C–H activation/dehydrogenative borylation forms a product exhibiting both B–H/Rh 3c-2e agostic and C–H/Rh anagostic motifs.![]()

Abstract
Two heterogeneous catalysts, MNP@SiO2-N-Xantphos/Rh(I) and MNP@SiO2-NH-C-scorpionate/Fe(II), were prepared by reaction of chloro-functionalized MNP@SiO2 with N-Xantphos and amino-functionalized MNP@SiO2 with iron(II)/C-allyl-scorpionate through nucleophilic substitution and hydroaminomethylation reactions, respectively. All catalysts were characterized using standard spectroscopic means, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetry (TG), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). An active and highly selective one-pot hydroformylation/acetalization homogeneous system for the transformation of terminal and highly substituted olefins (including terpenes) onto ethyl acetals is described. A synergic effect of bimetallic Rh(I)/P and Fe(II)/C-scorpionate catalysts is disclosed for the first time. The further sequential use of the heterogeneous catalysts, MNP@SiO2-N-Xantphos/Rh(I) and MNP@SiO2-NH-C-scorpionate/Fe(II) in hydroformylation/acetalization reactions allows the direct transformation of olefin onto ethyl acetals, keeping the activity and selectivity. Both catalysts were easily recovered by magnetic separation and reused with negligible loss of activity/selectivity, after six reutilization cycles.

Abstract
ConspectusWhile spectacular successes have been achieved in homogeneous catalysis with the use of achiral diphosphine ligands featuring a wide natural bite angle, such as XantPhos, chiral diphosphines that can induce a large P-M-P bite angle in their transition metal complexes are conspicuously less explored in asymmetric catalysis, probably due to the challenges in the identification and efficient construction of a suitable chiral backbone. In the past decade, a highly efficient synthesis of chiral aromatic spiroketals and the corresponding diphosphine ligands (SKPs) has been developed in this group.Based on a one-pot catalytic tandem double asymmetric hydrogenation-spiroketalization ring-closure reaction sequence, these SKP ligands featuring an extraordinarily long P···P distance and a flexible backbone have been readily prepared in large scale. Remarkably versatile coordination modes have been found in the complexes of SKP with some catalysis-relevant transition metals, for example, Pd, Cu, Au, and Rh. Whereas SKP enforces an unusually large bite angle in [Pd(SKP)Cl2] and [Cu(SKP)Cl] complexes (160.1° and 132.8°, respectively), it also allows for a bimetallic Au-Au interaction (3.254 Å) in the complex of [Au2(SKP)Cl2] or a square-planar coordination geometry for the [Rh(SKP)(cod)]SbF6 complex. Such an adaptable nature of SKP ligands for transition metal coordination has profound consequences in homogeneous asymmetric catalysis, as demonstrated by their unique performance in several types of catalytic asymmetric reactions. One of the most exciting examples is SKP/Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic amination of Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts, in which SKP/Pd complexes demonstrated excellent control of regio- and enantioselectivities and exhibited exceptionally high efficiency (with a TON up to 4750) in the catalysis. SKP ligands have also found a diversity of successful applications in Cu-, Au-, or Rh-catalyzed asymmetric reactions, further attesting their wide utilities in asymmetric catalysis. Overall, this class of readily accessible SKP ligands featuring a chiral aromatic spiroketal skeleton have demonstrated unique adaptable structures in a variety of transition metal complexes and provided outstanding performance in some difficult asymmetric transformations. The works delineated herein would be expected to stimulate further research efforts on the application of this type of chiral ligand and to provide useful clues in the design of new chiral diphosphine ligands with adaptable bite angles for transition metal catalyzed asymmetric reactions.

Abstract
Xantphos is a wide bite angle bisphosphine ligand that finds wide application in catalysis. Tracking its behavior during reactions under realistic reaction conditions can be difficult at low concentrations, and although electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) is effective at real-time monitoring of catalytic reactions, it can only observe ions. Accordingly, we experimented with the dianionic disulfonated version of xantphos as a charged tag for mechanistic analysis. It proved to behave exactly as hoped, providing good intensity and enabled the direct study of both an initial binding event (to copper, very fast) and a subsequent transfer to another metal (palladium). Its dianionic nature makes it especially promising for the study of reactions in which metals change charge state, because a cationic metal complex with an anionic ligand is an invisible zwitterion, whereas a dianionic ligand would instead make the same cationic complex appear due to the overall charge of −1. As such, disulfonated xantphos holds genuine promise as a mechanistic probe in real time analysis using mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Chelating phosphines have long been a mainstay as efficient directing ligands in transition-metal catalysis. Low-valent derivatives, namely chelating phosphinidenes, are to date unknown, and could lead to chelating complexes containing more than one metal centre due to the intrisic capacity of phosphinidenes to bind two metal fragments at one P-centre. Here we describe the synthesis of the first such chelating bis-phosphinidene ligand, XantP2 (2), generated by the reduction of a diphosphino xanthene derivative, Xant(PH2 )2 (1) with iPr NHC (iPr NHC=[:C{N(iPr)C(H)}2 ]). Initial studies have shown that this novel chelating ligand can act as a bidentate ligand towards element dihalides (i.e. FeCl2 , ZnI2 , GeCl2 , SnBr2 ), forming cationic complexes with the tetryl elements. In contrast, XantP2 demonstrates an ability to bind multiple metal centres in the reaction with CuCl, leading to a cationic Cu3 P3 ring complex, with Cu centres bridged by phosphinidene arms. Density Functional Theory calculations show that 2 indeed holds 4 lone pairs of electrons, shedding further light on the coordination capacity for this novel ligand class through observation of directionality and hybridisation of these electron pairs.

Abstract
A chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective mono-hydroamidation of (un)symmetrical 1,3-diynes is described. Key for the success of this novel transformation is the utilization of an advanced palladium catalyst system with the specific ligand Neolephos. The synthetic value of this general approach to synthetically useful α-alkynyl-α, β-unsaturated amides is showcased by diversification of several structurally complex molecules and marketed drugs. Control experiments and density-functional theory (M06L-SMD) computations also suggest the crucial role of the substrate in controlling the regioselectivity of unsymmetrical 1,3-diynes.

Abstract
Amides are one of the most ubiquitous functional groups in synthetic and medicinal chemistry. Novel and rapid synthesis of amides remains in high demand. In this communication, a general and efficient procedure for branch-selective hydroamidation of vinylarenes with hydroxyamine derivatives enabled by copper catalysis has been developed for the first time. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and tolerates a broad range of functional groups. Applying a chiral phosphine ligand, an enantioselective variant of this transformation was achieved, affording a variety of chiral α-amides with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99 % ee) and high yields.

Abstract
The saturated trihydride IrH3 {κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (1; xant(PiPr2 )2 =9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diisopropylphosphino)xanthene) activates the B-H bond of two molecules of pinacolborane (HBpin) to give H2 , the hydride-boryl derivatives IrH2 (Bpin){κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (2) and IrH(Bpin)2 {κ3 -P,O,P-[xant(PiPr2 )2 ]} (3) in a sequential manner. Complex 3 activates a C-H bond of two molecules of benzene to form PhBpin and regenerates 2 and 1, also in a sequential manner. Thus, complexes 1, 2, and 3 define two cycles for the catalytic direct C-H borylation of arenes with HBpin, which have dihydride 2 as a common intermediate. C-H bond activation of the arenes is the rate-determining step of both cycles, as the C-H oxidative addition to 3 is faster than to 2. The results from a kinetic study of the reactions of 1 and 2 with HBpin support a cooperative function of the hydride ligands in the B-H bond activation. The addition of the boron atom of the borane to a hydride facilitates the coordination of the B-H bond through the formation of κ1 - and κ2 -dihydrideborate intermediates.

Abstract
C-O bond activation of DPEphos occurs upon mild heating in the presence of [Ru(NHC)2 (PPh3 )2 H2 ] (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) to form phosphinophenolate products. When NHC=IEt2 Me2 , C-O activation is accompanied by C-N activation of an NHC ligand to yield a coordinated N-phosphino-functionalised carbene. DFT calculations define a nucleophilic mechanism in which a hydride ligand attacks the aryl carbon of the DPEphos C-O bond. This is promoted by the strongly donating NHC ligands which render a trans dihydride intermediate featuring highly nucleophilic hydride ligands accessible. C-O bond activation also occurs upon heating cis-[Ru(DPEphos)2 H2 ]. DFT calculations suggest this reaction is promoted by the steric encumbrance associated with two bulky DPEphos ligands. Our observations that facile degradation of the DPEphos ligand via C-O bond activation is possible under relatively mild reaction conditions has potential ramifications for the use of this ligand in high-temperature catalysis.

Abstract
We describe here the design of a palladium catalyzed route to generate aryl ketones via the carbonylative coupling of (hetero)arenes and aryl- or vinyl-triflates. In this, the use of the large bite angle Xantphos ligand on palladium provides a unique avenue to balance the activation of the relatively strong C(sp2)–OTf bond with the ultimate elimination of a new class of potent Friedel–Crafts acylating agent: N-acyl pyridinium salts. The latter can be exploited to modulate reactivity and selectivity in carbonylative arene functionalization chemistry, and allow the efficient synthesis of ketones with a diverse array of (hetero)arenes. A palladium catalyzed approach to the overall carbonylative functionalization of arenes to form ketones with aryl- and vinyl-triflates is described.![]()

Abstract
Herein is described a mechanistic study of a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl Grignard reagents to fluoroarenes that proceeds via a low-energy heterobimetallic oxidative addition pathway. Traditional oxidative additions of aryl chlorides to Pd complexes are known to be orders of magnitude faster than with aryl fluorides, and many palladium catalysts do not activate aryl fluorides at all. The experimental and computational studies outlined herein, however, support the view that at elevated Grignard : ArX ratios (i.e. 2.5 : 1) a Pd-Mg heterobimetallic mechanism predominates, leading to a remarkable decrease in the energy required for Ar-F bond activation. The heterobimetallic transition state for C-X bond cleavage is proposed to involve simultaneous Pd backbonding to the arene and Lewis acid activation of the halide by Mg to create a low-energy transition state for oxidative addition. The insights gained from this computational study led to the development of a phosphine ligand that was shown to be similarly competent for Ar-F bond activation.

Abstract
For the first time, the monoalkoxycarbonylation of easily available 1,3-diynes to give synthetically useful conjugated enynes has been realized. Key to success was the design and utilization of the new ligand 2,2'-bis(tert-butyl(pyridin-2-yl)phosphanyl)-1,1'-binaphthalene (Neolephos), which permits the palladium-catalyzed selective carbonylation under mild conditions, providing a general preparation of functionalized 1,3-enynes in good-to-high yields with excellent chemoselectivities. Synthetic applications that showcase the possibilities of this novel methodology include an efficient one-pot synthesis of 4-aryl-4H-pyrans as well as the rapid construction of various heterocyclic, bicyclic, and polycyclic compounds.

Abstract
A latex of amphiphilic star polymer particles, functionalized in the hydrophobic core with nixantphos and containing P(MAA-co-PEOMA) linear chains in the hydrophilic shell (nixantphos-functionalized core-crosslinked micelles, or nixantphos@CCM), has been prepared in a one-pot three-step convergent synthesis using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in water. The synthesis involves polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) in the second step and chain crosslinking with di(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (DEGDMA) in the final step. The core consists of a functionalized polystyrene, obtained by incorporation of a new nixantphos-functionalized styrene monomer (nixantphos-styrene), which is limited to 1 mol%. The nixantphos-styrene monomer was synthesized in one step by nucleophilic substitution of the chloride of 4-chloromethylstyrene by deprotonated nixantphos in DMF at 60 °C, without interference of either phosphine attack or self-induced styrene polymerization. The polymer particles, after loading with the [Rh(acac)(CO)2] precatalyst to yield Rh-nixantphos@CCM, function as catalytic nanoreactors under aqueous biphasic conditions for the hydroformylation of 1-octene to yield n-nonanal selectively, with no significant amounts of the branched product 2-methyl-octanal.

Abstract
Selective and efficient hydrosilylations of esters to alcohols by a well-defined manganese(I) complex with a commercially available bisphosphine ligand are described. These reactions are easy alternatives for stoichiometric hydride reduction or hydrogenation, and employing cheap, abundant, and nonprecious metal is attractive. The hydrosilylations were performed at 100 °C under solvent-free conditions with low catalyst loading. A large variety of aromatic, aliphatic, and cyclic esters bearing different functional groups were selectively converted into the corresponding alcohols in good yields.
