Abstract
The upgrading of ethanol to n-butanol marks a major breakthrough in the field of biofuel technology, offering the advantages of compatibility with existing infrastructure while simultaneously offering potential benefits in terms of transport efficiency and energy density. With its lower vapour pressure and reduced corrosiveness compared to ethanol, n-butanol is easier not only to manage but also to transport, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure changes. This leads to improved fuel efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. These features position n-butanol as a promising alternative to ethanol in the future of biodiesel. This review article delves into the cutting-edge advancements in upgrading ethanol to butanol, highlighting the critical importance of this transformation in enhancing the value and practical application of biofuels. While traditional methods for making butanol rely heavily on fossil fuels, those that employ ethanol as a starting material are dominated by heterogeneous catalysis, which is limited by the requirement of high temperatures and a lack of selectivity. Homogeneous catalysts have been pivotal in enhancing the efficiency and selectivity of this conversion, owing to their unique mode of operation at the molecular level. A comprehensive review of the various homogeneous catalytic processes employed in the transformation of feedstock-agnostic bio-ethanol to fuel-grade bio-n-butanol is provided here, with a major focus on the key advancements in catalyst design, reaction conditions and mechanisms that have significantly improved the efficiency and selectivity of these Guerbet reactions.

Abstract
Two Mn-phosphinophosphinine complexes were synthesised from reaction of the proligand with [MnBr(CO)5] at 80 °C for 2 h; 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine manganese tricarbonyl bromide (2TMS) and 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-phosphinine manganese tricarbonyl bromide (2H). 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopy revealed characteristic chemical shifts for the phosphinine and phosphine donors bound to Mn (255.4 and 23.7 ppm for 2TMS; 234.2 and 24.8 ppm for 2H), and single crystal X-ray diffraction established the structure of the chelating complex 2TMS. Rapid reaction of both complexes with water was observed with 2TMS reacting to eventually yield a single product, syn-3TMS, from the syn-1,2-addition of water across the PC multiple bond on the bromide face, confirmed by X-ray diffraction for both an unsolvated and solvated structure, where MeOH was found to be H-bonding to the P-OH functionality. The reaction of 2R with dry methanol gave multiple products that were not in equilibrium with each other, and the molecular structure of one isomer was definitively established by X-ray diffraction as an unusual 1,4-addition product (1,4-4TMS). However, reaction of 2R with methanol in the presence of trace water showed that hydrolysis products 3R were formed preferentially. Both phosphinine complexes acted as pre-catalysts for the Guerbet upgrading of methanol/ethanol to isobutanol at 180 °C over 90 h, giving yields of isobutanol (based on moles of ethanol) of 22% for 2TMS and 27% for 2H. This is superior to known Mn dppm complexes [dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane], including the 21% yield recorded for the best derivative [MnBr(κ2-PPh2C(H)PhPPh2)(CO)3] shown to date.

Abstract
The Guerbet reaction is important for the synthesis of longer-chain monoalcohols like isobutanol through catalytic transfer hydrogenation from short-chain methanol and ethanol. However, the mechanism becomes complicated, especially considering the variations in the different metal-ligand cooperation (MLC) catalysts used. In order to further understand the Guerbet reaction, DFT studies were performed to figure out the detailed mechanism initiated by the unique Mn-PCP MLC Catalyst. Our results suggest that even with the assistance of the carbanion site of the PCP ligand, the direct substitution mechanism is less favored than the condensation-reduction mechanism. The key step of the reaction is the final reduction of the carbonyl, in which the 1,4-reduction of the unsaturated aldehyde is prior to the 3,4-reduction or 1,2-reduction due to the stronger interaction between the catalyst and the substrate. It is found that the production of isobutanol is preferred over n-butanol because of the lower total free energy barrier and lower relative free energy of the product. Finally, by changing the electronic effect of the carbanion site of the catalyst, we found that the relation between the electronic effect and the highest free energy span was not monotonous and a point with optimal electronic effect exists numerically.

Abstract
Efficient catalysts for Guerbet-type ethanol/methanol upgrading to iso-butanol have been developed via Michael addition of a variety of amines to ruthenium-coordinated dppen (1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene). All catalysts produce over 50% iso-butanol yield with >90% selectivity in 2 h with catalyst 1 showing the best activity (74% yield after this time). The selectivity and turnover number approach 100% and 1000 respectively using catalyst 6. The presence of uncoordinated functionalised donor groups in these complexes results in a more stable catalyst compared to unfunctionalised analogues.

Abstract
A 3-amino-functionalized phosphabenzene (phosphinine) has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The pyramidalized nitrogen atom of the dimethylamino substituent indicates only a weak interaction between the lone pair of the nitrogen atom and the aromatic phosphorus heterocycle, resulting in somewhat basic character. It turned out that the amino group can indeed be protonated by HCl. In contrast to pyridines, however, the phosphabenzene-ammonium salt undergoes a selective ring contraction to form a hydroxylphospholene oxide in the presence of additional water. Based on deuterium labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations, a rational mechanism for this hitherto unknown conversion is proposed.

Abstract
An unexpected route to hitherto unknown amidine-functionalized phosphinines has been developed that is rapid and simple. Starting from primary amines and CF3-substituted λ3,σ2-phosphinines, a cascade of dehydrofluorination reactions leads selectively to ortho-amidinephosphinines. DFT calculations reveal that this unusual transformation can take place via a series of nucleophilic attacks at the electrophilic, low-coordinate phosphorus atom.

Digold Phosphinine Complexes Are Stable with a Bis(Phosphinine) Ligand but Not with a 2-Phosphinophosphinine. INORGANICS 2022. Abstract
The reaction of [bis{3-methyl-6-(trimethylsilyl)phosphinine-2-yl}dimethylsilane] (19) with one and two equivalents of [AuCl(tht)] was attempted in order to selectively form the mono and digold species, respectively. The digold species [(AuCl)2(19)] (21) was synthesized in 32% yield and comprehensibly characterized (multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction). The monogold species showed no 31P nuclear magnetic resonance at 25 °C but two resonances at −70 °C due to rapid exchange of AuCl between the phosphinine donors at 25 °C and was also susceptible to redistribution reactions to form the digold species. Analogous reactions of [AuCl(tht)] with 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine (22) revealed preferential coordination of the AuCl unit to the PPh2 donor first, with coordination to the phosphinine achieved upon reaction with the second equivalent of [AuCl(tht)]. Unexpectedly, the digold complex was not stable, undergoing decomposition to give an unidentified black precipitate. Structural information could only be obtained on the digold hydrolysis product [(AuCl)2(1-OH-2-PPh2-3-MePC5H4)], which showed an aurophilic interaction.

Reactivity Studies of Phosphinines: The Selenation of Diphenyl-Phosphine Substituents and Formation of a Chelating Bis(Phosphinine) Palladium(II) Complex. INORGANICS 2022. Abstract
Phosphinines and donor-substituted phosphinines are of recent interest due to their use in homogeneous catalysis. In this article, a Pd(II) bis(phosphinine) complex was characterised and phosphorus–selenium coupling constants were used to assess the donor properties of the diphenylphosphine substituents of phosphinine ligands to promote their further use in catalysis. The selenation of 2,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-3,6-dimethylphosphinine (5) and 2-diphenylphosphino-3-methyl-6-trimethylsilylphosphinine (6) gave the corresponding phosphine selenides 8 and 9, respectively, leaving the phosphinine ring intact. Multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed the oxidation of all the diphenylphosphine substituents with 1JP-Se coupling constants determined to be similar to SePPh3, indicating that the phosphinine rings were electronically similar to phenyl substituents. Solutions of 6 were found to react with oxygen slowly to produce the phosphine oxide 10 along with other by-products. The reaction of [bis{3-methyl-6-(trimethylsilyl)phosphinine-2-yl}dimethylsilane] (4) with [PdCl2(COD)] gave the chelating dichloropalladium(II) complex, as determined by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and an elemental analysis. The molecular structure of the intermediate 2 in the formation of 4,6-di(tert-butyl)-1,3,2-diazaphosphinine (3) was also determined, which confirmed the structure of the diazaphosphacycle P(Cl){N=C(tBu)CH=C(tBu)-N(H)}.

Abstract
As the world pledges to significantly cut carbon emissions, the demand for sustainable and clean energy has now become more important than ever. This includes both production and storage of energy carriers, a majority of which involve catalytic reactions. This article reviews recent developments of homogeneous catalysts in emerging applications of sustainable energy. The most important focus has been on hydrogen storage as several efficient homogeneous catalysts have been reported recently for (de)hydrogenative transformations promising to the hydrogen economy. Another direction that has been extensively covered in this review is that of the methanol economy. Homogeneous catalysts investigated for the production of methanol from CO2, CO, and HCOOH have been discussed in detail. Moreover, catalytic processes for the production of conventional fuels (higher alkanes such as diesel, wax) from biomass or lower alkanes have also been discussed. A section has also been dedicated to the production of ethylene glycol from CO and H2 using homogeneous catalysts. Well-defined transition metal complexes, in particular, pincer complexes, have been discussed in more detail due to their high activity and well-studied mechanisms.

Abstract
The first ruthenium dihydride complex featuring a phosphinine ligand cis-[Ru(H)2(2-PPh2-3-Me-6-SiMe3-PC5H2)2] was synthesised exclusively as the cis-isomer. When formed in situ from the reaction of cis-[Ru(Cl)2(2-PPh2-3-Me-6-SiMe3-PC5H2)2] with two equivalents of Na[BHEt3], as demonstrated by 31P and 1H NMR spectroscopy, the catalysed acceptorless dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol was observed leading to benzyl benzoate in up to 70% yield.

Abstract
The yet unknown 2-amino-substituted λ3 ,σ2 -phosphinines are phosphorus-containing aniline derivatives. Calculations show that the strong interaction of the π-donating NR2 group with the aromatic system results in a high π-density at the phosphorus atom. We could now synthesize 2-N(CH3 )2 -functionalized phosphinines, starting from a 3-N(CH3 )2 -substituted 2-pyrone and (CH3 )3 Si-C≡P. Their reaction with CuBr⋅S(CH3 )2 affords CuI complexes with the first example of a neutral phosphinine acting as a rare bridging μ2 -P-4e donor-ligand between two CuI centers. Our experimental and theoretical investigations show that 2-aminophosphinines are missing links in the series of known 2-donor-functionalized phosphinines.

Abstract
The development of a C2-extension of primary alcohols with ethanol as the C2 source and catalysis by [Cp*IrCl2]2 (where Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadiene) is described. This new extension system was used for a range of benzylic alcohol substrates and for aliphatic alcohols with ethanol as an alkyl reagent to generate the corresponding C2-extended linear alcohols. Mechanistic studies of the reaction by means of intermediates and deuterium labeling experiments suggest the reaction is based on hydrogen autotransfer.

Abstract
Herein we report the iron-catalyzed β-C(sp3)-methylation of primary alcohols using methanol as a C1 building block. This borrowing hydrogen approach employs a well-defined bench-stable (cyclopentadienone)iron(0) carbonyl complex as precatalyst (5 mol %) and enables a diverse selection of substituted 2-arylethanols to undergo β-C(sp3)-methylation in good isolated yields (24 examples, 65% average yield).

Abstract
Isobutanol serves as an ideal gasoline additive owing to its good compatibility with current engine technology, high energy density, and high octane number. Herein, an efficient and selective Mn-catalyzed upgrading of ethanol with methanol into isobutanol is reported. This is the first example of deoxygenative coupling of lower alcohols to isobutanol by using a homogeneous non-noble-metal catalyst. This transformation proceeded at very low catalyst loading with a high turnover number (9233) and up to 96 % isobutanol selectivity.

Abstract
As compared to the normal η1-P σ-complexes or η6-phosphinine π-complexes, the rare μ2-P bridging binding mode of phosphinines can be tuned by employing electron donating substitute.
Phosphinines, as aromatic heterocycles, usually engage in coordination as η1-P σ-complexes or η6-phosphinine π-complexes. The μ2-P bridging coordination mode is rarely observed. With the aim to study the effect of different electronic configurations of phosphinines on the coordination modes, a series of anionic phosphinin-2-olates and neutral phosphinin-2-ols were prepared with moderate to high yield. Then the coordination chemistry of these two series was studied in detail towards coinage metals (Au(i) and Cu(i)). It is observed that the anionic phosphinin-2-olates possess a higher tendency to take a bridging position between two metal centers compared to the neutral phosphinin-2-ols. Based on these experimental findings bolstered by DFT calculations, some insight is gained on how the unconventional μ2-P phosphinine bridging coordination mode can be made more conventional and used for the synthesis of polynuclear complexes.
