Palladium-Catalyzed Direct Selanylation of Chalcogenophenes and Arenes Assisted by 2-(Methylthio)amide

The direct and selective conversion of a C-H bond into a C-Se bond remains a significant challenge, which is even more intricate with substrates having an innate regioselectivity under several reaction conditions, such as chalcogenophenes. We overrode their selectivity toward selanylation using palladium, copper, and the 2-(methylthio)amide directing group. This chelation-assisted direct selanylation was also suitable for mono and double ortho functionalization of arenes. The mechanistic studies indicate high-valent Pd(IV) species in the catalytic cycle, a reversible C-H activation step, and Cu(II) as a sequestering agent for organoselenide byproducts.

Diorganyl diselenides: a powerful tool for the construction of selenium containing scaffolds

Organoselenium compounds find versatile applications in organic synthesis, materials synthesis, and ligand chemistry. Organoselenium heterocycles are widely studied agents with diverse applications in various biological processes. This review highlights the recent progress in the synthesis of selenium heterocycles using diorganyl diselenides with keen attention on green synthetic approaches, scopes, C-H selanylation, the mechanisms of different reactions and insights into the formation of metal complexes. The C-H selanylation using diorganyl diselenides with different catalysts, bases, transition metals, iodine salts, NIS, hypervalent iodine, and other reagents is summarised. Finally, the diverse binding modes of bis(2/4-pyridyl)diselenide with different metal complexes are also summarised.

Recent developments in decarboxylative C(aryl)-X bond formation from (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids

Decarboxylative coupling reactions using readily available (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids are a highly efficient approach for the formation of new C-C and C-X bonds. These decarboxylative coupling reactions eliminate CO2 as a by-product, resulting in a greener and environmentally more benign approach than conventional coupling reactions. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in ipso-decarboxylative C-X (X = O/N/halo/S/Se/P/CN) bond formations using (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids. Furthermore, we highlight the current limitations and future research opportunities of aryl-decarboxylative coupling reactions.

Ni nanoparticle-confined covalent organic polymer directed diaryl-selenides synthesis

The present work describes the preparation of a new covalent organic polymer (COP) and its application as a hetero support for diaryl selenides synthesis. A nitrogen rich COP (CGP) has been synthesized via SNAr reaction of cyanuric chloride with guanidinium hydrochloride. The successful confinement of COP with Ni nanoparticles through post-synthetic transformations (Ni@CGP) provides excellent catalytic activity for the transformation of aryl halides into diaryl selenides using elemental selenium powder. The synthetic transformations are well confirmed using various modern analytical and spectroscopic techniques which reveal high chemical and thermal durability. The N-rich framework of CGP fortifies the confinement of Ni NPs. Ni@CGP provides an efficient approach for diaryl selenides synthesis using a very cheap selenating reagent under water benign solvent conditions (DMSO : H2O) at room temperature with high reusability. Significantly, our work not only contributes the opportunity for developing economical and effective non-noble metal decorated COPs as heterogeneous catalysts, but also delivers an efficient approach to produce industrially important C-Se coupling products.

Synthesis of thioethers, arenes and arylated benzoxazoles by transformation of the C(aryl)-C bond of aryl alcohols

Transformation of aryl alcohols into high-value functionalized aromatic compounds by selective cleavage and functionalization of the C(aryl)–C(OH) bond is of crucial importance, but very challenging by far. Herein, for the first time, we report a novel and versatile strategy for activation and functionalization of C(aryl)–C(OH) bonds by the cooperation of oxygenation and decarboxylative functionalization. A diverse range of aryl alcohol substrates were employed as arylation reagents via the cleavage of C(aryl)–C(OH) bonds and effectively converted into corresponding thioether, arene, and arylated benzoxazole products in excellent yields, in a Cu based catalytic system using O₂ as the oxidant. This study offers a new way for aryl alcohol conversion and potentially offers a new opportunity to produce high-value functionalized aromatics from renewable feedstocks such as lignin which features abundant C(aryl)–C(OH) bonds in its linkages.

Aryl alcohols served as aryl agents by effective activation of C(aryl)–C(OH) bonds, and were transformed into corresponding thioether, arene, and arylated benzoxazole products in excellent yields.

Copper-catalyzed diarylation of Se with aryl iodides and heterocycles

The site-selective copper-catalyzed three-component coupling reaction of electron-deficient heterocycles, Se powder and aryl iodides is disclosed, providing an efficient and practical pathway to access 2-arylselenated heterocycles.
