Advanced Functionalized Materials Based on Layer-by-Layer Assembled Natural Cellulose Nanofiber for Electrodes: A Review

The depletion of fossil fuel resources and its impact on the environment provide a compelling motivation for the development of sustainable energy sources to meet the increasing demand for energy. Accordingly, research and development of energy storage devices have emerged as a critical area of focus. The electrode materials are critical in the electrochemical performance of energy storage devices, such as energy storage capacity and cycle life. Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) represents an important substrate with potentials in the applications of green electrode materials due to their environmental sustainability and excellent compatibility. By utilizing the layer-by layer (LbL) process, well-defined nanoscale multilayer structure is prepared on a variety of substrates. In recent years, increasing attention has focused on electrode materials produced from LbL process on CNFs to yield electrodes with exceptional properties, such as high specific surface area, outstanding electrical conductivity, superior electrochemical activity, and exceptional mechanical stability. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the development of functional CNF via the LbL approach as electrode materials.

Recent advances in sustainable preparation of cellulose nanocrystals via solid acid hydrolysis: A mini-review

As a green and renewable nanomaterial, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have received numerous attention due to the unique structural features and superior physicochemical properties. Conventionally, CNC was isolated from lignocellulosic biomass mostly depending on sulfuric or hydrochloric acid hydrolysis. Although this approach is effective, some critical issues such as severe equipment corrosion, excessive cellulose degradation, serious environmental pollution, and large water usage are inevitable. Fortunately, solid acid hydrolysis is emerging as an economical and sustainable CNC production technique and has achieved considerable progress in recent years. Herein, the preparation of CNC by solid acid hydrolysis was summarized systematically, including organic solid acids (citric, maleic, oxalic, tartaric, p-toluenesulfonic acid) and inorganic solid acids (phosphotungstic, phosphoric, and Lewis acid). The advantages and disadvantages of organic and inorganic solid acid hydrolysis methods were evaluated comprehensively. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in the later exploitation and application of solid acid hydrolysis to prepare CNC in the industrial context are discussed. Considering the future development of this technology in the large-scale CNC production, much more efforts should be made in lowering CNC processing cost, fabricating high-solid-content and re-dispersible CNC, developing value-added applications of CNC, and techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment on the whole process.

Recent advances in biopolymers-based carbon materials for supercapacitors

Supercapacitors as potential candidates for novel green energy storage devices demonstrate a promising future in promoting sustainable energy supply, but their development is impeded by limited energy density, which can be addressed by developing high-capacitance electrode materials with efforts. Carbon materials derived from biopolymers have received much attention for their abundant reserves and environmentally sustainable nature, rendering them ideal for supercapacitor electrodes. However, the limited capacitance has hindered their widespread application, resulting in the proposal of various strategies to enhance the capacity properties of carbon electrodes. This paper critically reviewed the recent research progress of biopolymers-based carbon electrodes. The advances in biopolymers-based carbon electrodes for supercapacitors are presented, followed by the strategies to improve the capacitance of carbon electrodes which include pore engineering, doping engineering and composite engineering. Furthermore, this review is summarized and the challenges of biopolymer-derived carbon electrodes are discussed. The purpose of this review is to promote the widespread application of biopolymers in the domain of supercapacitors.

Biochar-layered double hydroxide composites for the adsorption of tetracycline from water: synthesis, process modeling, and mechanism

Antibiotic-contaminated water is a crucial issue worldwide. Thus, in this study, the MgFeCa-layered double hydroxides were supported in date palm-derived biochar (B) using co-precipitation, hydrothermal, and co-pyrolysis methods. It closes gaps in composite design for pharmaceutical pollutant removal, advances eco-friendly adsorbents, and advances targeted water cleanup by investigating synthesis methodologies and gaining new insights into adsorption. The prepared B-MgFeCa composites were investigated for tetracycline (TC) adsorption from an aqueous solution. The B-MgFeCa composites synthesized through co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods exhibited better crystallinity, functional groups, and well-developed LDH structure within the biochar matrix. However, the co-pyrolysis method resulted in the LDH structure breakage, leading to the low crystalline composite material. The maximum adsorption of TC onto all B-MgFeCa was obtained at an acidic pH range (4-5). The B-MgFeCa composites produced via hydrothermal and co-pyrolysis methods showed higher and faster TC adsorption than the co-precipitation method. The kinetic results can be better described by Langmuir kinetic and mixed order models at low and high TC concentrations, indicating that the rate-limiting step is mainly associated with active binding sites adsorption. The Sip and Freundlich models showed better fitting with the equilibrium data. The TC removal by B-MgFeCa composites prepared via hydrothermal, the highest estimated uptake which is around 639.76 mg.g-1 according to the Sips model at ambient conditions, and co-pyrolysis was mainly dominated by physical and chemical interactions. The composite obtained via the co-precipitation method adsorbed TC through chemical bonding between surface functional groups with anionic species of TC molecule. The B-MgFeCa composite showed excellent reusability performance for up to five cycles with only a 30% decrease in TC removal efficiency. The results demonstrated that B-MgFeCa composites could be used as promising adsorbent materials for effective wastewater treatment.

Lignin-Based/Polypyrrole Carbon Nanofiber Electrode With Enhanced Electrochemical Properties by Electrospun Method

Tailoring the structure and properties of lignin is an important step toward electrochemical applications. In this study, lignin/polypyrrole (PPy) composite electrode films with microporous and mesoporous structures were designed effectively by electrostatic spinning, carbonization, and in situ polymerization methods. The lignin can not only reduce the cost of carbon fiber but also increase the specific surface area of composite films due to the removal of carbonyl and phenolic functional groups of lignin during carbonization. Besides, the compact three-dimensional (3D) conductive network structures were constructed with PPy particles densely coated on the lignin nanofibers, which was helpful to improve the conductivity and fast electron transfer during the charging and discharging processes. The synthesized lignin carbon fibers/PPy anode materials had good electrochemical performance in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte. The results showed that, at a current density of 1 A g−1, the lignin carbon nanofibers/PPy (LCNFs/PPy) had a larger specific capacitance of 213.7 F g−1 than carbon nanofibers (CNFs), lignin carbon nanofibers (LCNFs), and lignin/PPy fiber (LPAN/PPy). In addition, the specific surface area of LCNFs/PPy reached 872.60 m2 g−1 and the average pore size decreased to 2.50 nm after being coated by PPy. Therefore, the independent non-binder and self-supporting conductive film is expected to be a promising electrode material for supercapacitors with high performance.

Bio-Phenolic Resin Derived Porous Carbon Materials for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Capacitor

In this article, hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) with high surface area of 1604.9 m²/g is prepared by the pyrolysis of rubberwood sawdust using CaCO₃ as a hard template. The bio-oil pyrolyzed from the rubber sawdust, followed by the polymerization reaction to form resole phenolic resin, can be used as a carbon source to prepare HPC. The biomass-derived HPC shows a three-dimensionally interconnected morphology which can offer a continuous pathway for ionic transport. The symmetrical supercapacitors based on the as-prepared HPC were tested in 1.0 M tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate/propylene carbonate electrolyte. The results of electrochemical analysis show that the HPC-based supercapacitor exhibits a high specific capacitance of 113.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g with superior rate capability and cycling stability up to 5000 cycles. Hybrid lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) based on the HPC and Li₄Ti₅O₁₂ (LTO) were also fabricated. The LICs have a maximum energy density of 113.3 Wh/kg at a power density of 281 W/kg. Moreover, the LIC also displays a remarkable cycling performance with a retention of 92.8% after 3000 cycles at a large current density of 0.75 A/g, suggesting great potential application in the energy storage of the LIC.

Cellulose-Derived Nanostructures as Sustainable Biomass for Supercapacitors: A Review

Sustainable biomass has attracted a great attention in developing green renewable energy storage devices (e.g., supercapacitors) with low-cost, flexible and lightweight characteristics. Therefore, cellulose has been considered as a suitable candidate to meet the requirements of sustainable energy storage devices due to their most abundant nature, renewability, hydrophilicity, and biodegradability. Particularly, cellulose-derived nanostructures (CNS) are more promising due to their low-density, high surface area, high aspect ratio, and excellent mechanical properties. Recently, various research activities based on CNS and/or various conductive materials have been performed for supercapacitors. In addition, CNS-derived carbon nanofibers prepared by carbonization have also drawn considerable scientific interest because of their high conductivity and rational electrochemical properties. Therefore, CNS or carbonized-CNS based functional materials provide ample opportunities in structure and design engineering approaches for sustainable energy storage devices. In this review, we first provide the introduction and then discuss the fundamentals and technologies of supercapacitors and utilized materials (including cellulose). Next, the efficacy of CNS or carbonized-CNS based materials is discussed. Further, various types of CNS are described and compared. Then, the efficacy of these CNS or carbonized-CNS based materials in developing sustainable energy storage devices is highlighted. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives are briefly conferred.
