Chitosan nanoparticle applications in dentistry: a sustainable biopolymer

The epoch of Nano-biomaterials and their application in the field of medicine and dentistry has been long-lived. The application of nanotechnology is extensively used in diagnosis and treatment aspects of oral diseases. The nanomaterials and its structures are being widely involved in the production of medicines and drugs used for the treatment of oral diseases like periodontitis, oral carcinoma, etc. and helps in maintaining the longevity of oral health. Chitosan is a naturally occurring biopolymer derived from chitin which is seen commonly in arthropods. Chitosan nanoparticles are the latest in the trend of nanoparticles used in dentistry and are becoming the most wanted biopolymer for use toward therapeutic interventions. Literature search has also shown that chitosan nanoparticles have anti-tumor effects. This review highlights the various aspects of chitosan nanoparticles and their implications in dentistry.

Advanced Functionalized Materials Based on Layer-by-Layer Assembled Natural Cellulose Nanofiber for Electrodes: A Review

The depletion of fossil fuel resources and its impact on the environment provide a compelling motivation for the development of sustainable energy sources to meet the increasing demand for energy. Accordingly, research and development of energy storage devices have emerged as a critical area of focus. The electrode materials are critical in the electrochemical performance of energy storage devices, such as energy storage capacity and cycle life. Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) represents an important substrate with potentials in the applications of green electrode materials due to their environmental sustainability and excellent compatibility. By utilizing the layer-by layer (LbL) process, well-defined nanoscale multilayer structure is prepared on a variety of substrates. In recent years, increasing attention has focused on electrode materials produced from LbL process on CNFs to yield electrodes with exceptional properties, such as high specific surface area, outstanding electrical conductivity, superior electrochemical activity, and exceptional mechanical stability. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the development of functional CNF via the LbL approach as electrode materials.

Advances in Microwave Synthesis of Nanoporous Materials

Usually, porous materials are synthesized by using conventional electric heating, which can be energy- and time-consuming. Microwave heating is commonly used in many households to quickly heat food. Microwave ovens can also be used as powerful devices in the synthesis of various porous materials. The microwave-assisted synthesis offers a simple, fast, efficient, and economic way to obtain many of the advanced nanomaterials. This review summarizes the recent achievements in the microwave-assisted synthesis of diverse groups of nanoporous materials including silicas, carbons, metal-organic frameworks, and metal oxides. Microwave-assisted methods afford highly porous materials with high specific surface areas (SSAs), e.g., activated carbons with SSA ≈3100 m² g^-1 , metal-organic frameworks with SSA ≈4200 m² g^-1 , covalent organic frameworks with SSA ≈2900 m² g^-1 , and metal oxides with relatively small SSA ≈300 m² g^-1 . These methods are also successfully implemented for the preparation of ordered mesoporous silicas and carbons as well as spherically shaped nanomaterials. Most of the nanoporous materials obtained under microwave irradiation show potential applications in gas adsorption, water treatment, catalysis, energy storage, and drug delivery, among others.

Highly Electroconductive Nanopapers Based on Nanocellulose and Copper Nanowires: A New Generation of Flexible and Sustainable Electrical Materials

Nowadays, the development of sustainable high-performance functional nanomaterials is in the spotlight. In this work, we report the preparation of a new generation of flexible and high electroconductive nanopapers based on nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and copper nanowires (CuNWs). Homogeneous red brick color nanopapers (thickness 30.2-36.4 μm) were obtained by mixing different amounts of NFC aqueous suspensions and CuNWs (1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 wt %), followed by vacuum filtration and drying. scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis confirmed the incorporation of the different amounts of CuNWs, and their uniform and random distribution. All of the nanomaterials displayed good mechanical properties, viz., Young's modulus = 2.62-4.72 GPa, tensile strength = 30.2-70.6 MPa, and elongation at break = 2.3-4.1% for the nanopapers with 50 and 1 wt % of CuNWs mass fraction, respectively. The electrical conductivity of these materials strongly depends on the CuNW content, attaining a value of 5.43 × 10⁴ S·m^-1 for the nanopaper with a higher mass fraction. This is one of the highest values reported so far for nanocellulose-based conductive materials. Therefore, these nanopapers can be seen as an excellent inexpensive and green alternative to the current electroconductive materials for applications in electronic devices, energy storage, or sensors.
