Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the parenting experiences of mothers who care for children with cancer in Jordan and specifically focuses on the communication experiences of mothers who care for children with cancer. METHODOLOGY A qualitative research design employing a narrative inquiry methodology was adopted; it employed the implementation of twenty semi-structured interviews with the mothers of children with cancer recruited from one pediatric hospital located in Amman, Jordan. FINDINGS The findings of this study reveal that the majority of mothers attempted to conceal or delay any discussion regarding the diagnosis with their child, particularly during the immediate post-diagnosis period. Additionally, the mothers expressed that their relationships with the parents of children diagnosed with the same illness contain positive and negative aspects. Finally, most mothers participating in this study praised the role of hope in helping them cope with the challenging health condition of their children. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study reveal that mothers would withhold diagnostic information from their children for several reasons: firstly, they wished to safeguard their children from feelings of distress; secondly, they perceived that their children were too immature to fully comprehend the seriousness of their diagnosis; and, finally, they desired to protect their children from unnecessary fear and negative emotions. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Pediatric cancer care requires effective communication between physicians, pediatric nurses, caregivers, and children; clear and accurate communication between healthcare providers and parents of children with cancer ensures that they fully understand the diagnosis and can make values-based decisions.

Abstract
Children in the United States are increasingly living with chronic illnesses. Existing literature has focused on adolescent children's experiences. The current study involved interviews with 10 families: children (ages 6-11) diagnosed with chronic illnesses and their mothers to better understand the experience of living with chronic illness. Using grounded theory, participants' responses fell into several themes: impact on family dynamics, parental advocacy, initial difficulty followed by resilience, unique stressors, and areas of social support. Overall, both mothers and children reported unique challenges related to living with childhood chronic illness, especially in terms of family dynamics, sibling relationships, and the mother-child relationship. However, almost all families also emphasized their ability to be resilient. The results have implications for medical practitioners and teachers who work with school-age children with chronic illnesses. Mothers need to feel supported and understood by professionals. Families need support to cope with stressors and strengthen couple, sibling, and parent-child relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serious ethical problems have been anecdotally identified in the care of children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), which may negatively impact their moral experiences, defined as their sense of fulfillment towards personal values and beliefs. RESEARCH AIMS To explore children's actual and desired participation in discussions, decisions, and actions in an OI hospital setting and their community using art-making to facilitate their self-expression. RESEARCH DESIGN A focused ethnography was conducted using the moral experiences framework with data from key informant interviews; participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and practice-based research (art-making) with 10 children with OI; and local documents. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT The study was conducted at a pediatric, orthopedic hospital. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS This study was approved by McGill University Institutional Review Board. FINDINGS/RESULTS Children expressed desires to participate in their care, but sometimes lacked the necessary resources and encouragement from healthcare providers. Art-making facilitated children's voice and participation in health-related discussions. CONCLUSIONS Healthcare providers are recommended to consider the benefits of art-making and educational resources to reduce discrepancies between children's actual and desired participation in care and promote positive moral experiences.

Abstract
Pediatric hospitalization is a common experience that may increase children's sense of isolation and impinge on their social-emotional wellbeing. Educators and medical practitioners could minimize these negative effects of hospitalization if they were able to listen to the voices of the children and, therefore, better meet their needs. This qualitative study provides an overview of how children with a medical condition actively construct and organize their thoughts and feelings about illness, life in hospital, and relationships. We extrapolated from a collection of children's narratives from a previous more comprehensive study (consisting of 379 narratives from children in 29 public hospitals across Italy, age range 3-14 years). Narratives grouped under the headings "Me and my illness" or "Me and the others" were selected and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to identify the richness and complexity of children's experience. Results showed that children's description of their illness was affected both by cognitive and social factors. For children, the concept of feeling ill or well is not linked only to the fact that they are in hospital for a medical condition; rather, it is influenced by their ability to form relationships with others, play, be active, and feel alive within the hospital environment. Listening to narratives can deepen our understanding of children's illness-related experiences and how they make sense of their situation. A set of practice implications are presented to help health professionals and educators to improve their listening capabilities and better prevent adverse pediatric hospitalization outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is stated that the communication and disease experiences of paediatric patients, especially paediatric oncology patients, with healthcare professionals are completely different from those of adults. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the definitions of a good physician and good nurse provided by elementary school-age oncology patients. RESEARCH DESIGN In this qualitative research, data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews. The data were evaluated thorough thematic analysis. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT Eighteen children hospitalised due to cancer in paediatric oncology and haematology clinics of a university hospital in Turkey. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Institution's Ethics Committee. The objectives of this study were explained to the participants and families, and written consent was obtained from them. Also, participants were assured that necessary measures would be taken to protect their anonymity and confidentiality. FINDINGS The definitions of children were based on five main themes: interpersonal relationships, virtues, professional responsibility, security and individual characteristics. CONCLUSION Children conveyed important messages to health professionals. They emphasised that a good physician and good nurse should communicate well, not only with themselves but also with their family. In addition, children were sensitive about health professionals who played with them and actively participated in the treatment by informing them about the disease. Meeting the expectations of children can be possible by improving the communication skills of physicians and nurses and by adding games and activities to the treatment and care plan.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to document qualitative questionnaire feedback regarding management from a cohort observational study of young people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). METHODS Between 1991 and 2009, 784 paediatric patients, age 6-18 years, were diagnosed with ME/CFS following referral to a specialised clinic at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne. Over a 14-year period, feedback was requested on up to seven occasions. Management included the following: symptom management and a self-management lifestyle plan that included social, educational, physical and a pleasurable activity outside of home. They adjusted it by severity of illness, stage of education, family circumstances and life interests. RESULTS Questionnaires were returned from 626 (80%) with 44% providing feedback more than once. They reported that their management plan allowed them to regain control over their lives. They cited early diagnosis, empathetic, informed physicians, self-management strategies and educational liaison as helping them to function and remain socially engaged. Ongoing support, particularly assistance to navigate the education system, was essential for general well-being and ability to cope. CONCLUSION Young people valued regaining the control over their lives that was lost through illness, support to maintain social contacts and assistance to achieve educational and/or life goals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preoperative fasting is performed to reduce aspiration risk during general anesthesia. Recommendations are that patients should fast for 6 hours from solids and nonhuman milk, 4 hours from breast milk, and 2 hours from clear fluids. However, previous studies have shown that children fast far in excess of these times, which can result in perioperative complications and unnecessary discomfort for the child. AIMS This prospective, mixed-methods study aims to explore the experiences of pediatric patients undergoing preoperative fasting in Leeds General Infirmary. It also aims to investigate fasting durations of these patients and factors which influence these. METHODS Over 2 weeks, surveys were distributed to all parents of elective pediatric patients and completed prior to their child being called to theater. Children over the age of six were offered a child survey, which had been specifically developed for the study, with visual Likert scales and an area for free text. The gathering of children's comments about their experience of preoperative fasting is unique to this study. RESULTS Seventy-one parent surveys and 48 child surveys were completed, with a mean patient age of 8.3 years (SD 4.1). The mean preoperative fasting time for food was 11.7 hours (SD 4.4) and 6.9 hours (SD 5.0) for fluids. Fasting times were far in excess of the minimums recommended, negatively impacting patient experience with 34% reporting being hungry/very hungry and 19% thirsty/very thirsty. Most children's comments suggested that they coped well with the fasting; however, several children reported feelings of sadness and anxiety. CONCLUSION Preoperative fasting times in pediatric patients far exceed the durations set by international guidelines. Given that many children reported extreme feelings of hunger and thirst or emotional effects from the fast, these durations need to be optimized in order to improve patient experience.

Abstract
This article explores how knowledge is expressed and enacted in the practice of physiotherapy with children. The empirical material was generated through close observation of seven physiotherapy treatment sessions involving 7 children between 6 and 11 years old and 5 physiotherapists. Observations were undertaken by the first author, whose post-session written notes, along with comments and questions, constitute the database of this article. Through processing and analysis of data, we have written and present three experiential anecdotes as basis for further analysis and discussion. The article shows how children take initiative during therapy and display playful knowledge both of their body, moving capacity and of the equipment and tasks introduced. The physiotherapists seem to tend to emphasize physiological knowledge relating to the body, its functions and the "dangers" of pathological movement patterns. As a result, physiotherapists and child clients appear caught in a kind of stagnant co-existence where their connection and contact are at a standstill and there is little exchange of knowledge between them. We argue that, for therapy with children to develop along qualitative and creative lines, physiotherapists need to explicitly recognize children as humans of knowledge and embrace their playful contributions as significant to therapy.

Abstract
Background Research on living with a chronic disease (CD) in adolescence is increasing. However, studies on the relevance of psychosocial factors are still needed. The present review, focuses on the impact of living with a CD in adolescence on on quality of life (QoL), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychosocial factors. Methods A literature review of articles identified through PubMed, PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES (these last two ones comprise the Ebsco Host platform) and original peer-reviewed research papers, published between 2010 and 2015, with no restrictions regarding the format/source of interventions, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or types of comparisons were included. Results Eighteen papers met the inclusion criteria and contradictory results were found: the majority showed a significantly higher risk of impairment on QoL/HRQoL and psychosocial factors, whereas others reported a significantly lower risk of impairment (highlighting possible protective factors), or no significant differences. Heterogeneity in the assessment procedures and substantial difficulties in considering adolescence as a single and independent age group, were also noted. Conclusion The higher risk of impairment and the heterogeneity observed between cohorts, reinforce the need to work towards consensual procedures, which allow for more accurate comparisons among studies. Additionally, it conveys the challenge to find more effective interventions. Furthermore, it is highly suggested to routinely assess HRQoL/psychosocial factors within an individualized framework, to considerer adolescents as a single/independent group, to emphasize potential protective factors, and, to increase youth's participation in their own adaptation process and in health promotion in general. These are possible future directions that could enable multidisciplinary responses to improve HRQoL and psychosocial care in adolescents with a CD.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES This review aims to answer the question 'What are the possible effects on children of having a parent with chronic renal failure?' BACKGROUND Chronic illness affects the whole family, not just the individual with the illness. It would appear that little research has been undertaken to consider the potential effects on children when a parent has chronic renal failure. METHOD Systematic review. CONCLUSIONS There are many potential effects of parental chronic renal failure that have been documented. These are both negative, for example depression and under achievement and positive, for example - enhanced self-esteem. Children, in particular, appear to have a need for information that is not being met. The review has helped to refine a project looking at the information needs of children who have a parent with chronic renal failure, from the perspective of the child. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE There appears to be a lack of information to direct nursing practice in this area. Practitioners need to be aware that chronic parental illness impacts on the whole family. Appropriate referral mechanisms for the child and family are necessary, in addition to an understanding of the needs of these children.

Abstract
In the past decade there has been both an increase in the number of children who receive nursing care in their communities rather than in hospitals, and an increasing willingness to listen to children. This qualitative study used Clark's Mosaic approach to elicit children's views of community children's nursing. Twenty-one children took part in total, with seven children making up a core group who participated in a number of activities for over a year. A non-core group of 14 children were observed receiving care from six community children's nurses. The children had diverse medical conditions, were aged from 11 months to 17 years old and came from diverse social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Some children expressed a positive regard for nurses and nursing. Some children a negative regard, others were ambiguous. From these data it is proposed that there is a continuum of regard for nurses. How children regarded nurses did not seem to be related to the nurse's actions, but to the child's understanding of their illness and their involvement in care. Further study is required to clarify the concept and should focus on what effect children's regard for nurses and nursing has on health outcomes.
