Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the potential of electrodermal activity (EDA) as a diagnostic tool for preoperative evaluation in hyperhidrosis patients. EDA levels and patterns in different skin areas were investigated before and after endoscopic thoracic sympathicotomy (ETS) and was compared to healthy subjects. Methods Thirty-seven patients underwent two days of measurements before and after the operation. Twenty-five (67.5%) of the patients also had a third measurement after six months. Non-invasive EDA measurements, involving skin conductance, were sampled from five different skin areas while patients were at rest in supine and sitting positions or when subjected to stimuli such as deep inspirations, mental challenge, and exposure to a sudden loud sound. Results Prior to the operation, hyperhidrosis patients showed higher spontaneous palm EDA variations at rest and stronger responses to stimuli compared to healthy subjects. Patients with facial blushing/hyperhidrosis or combined facial/palmar hyperhidrosis showed minimal spontaneous activity or responses, particularly during mental challenge and sound stimulus. Notably, palm EDA response was abolished shortly following sympathicotomy, although a minor response was observed after six months. Minimal EDA responses were also observed in the back and abdomen postoperatively. Conclusion Hyperhidrosis patients showed stronger EDA response to stimuli compared to healthy subjects. Sympathicotomy resulted in the complete elimination of palm EDA responses, gradually returning to a limited extent after six months. These findings suggest that EDA recordings could be utilized in preoperative assessment of hyperhidrosis patients.

Abstract
Primary palmar hyperhidrosis (PPH) constitutes a debilitating condition that profoundly impacts the social, functional, and occupational aspects of individuals. The intradermal administration of botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) stands as an established therapeutic approach for PPH, albeit one frequently accompanied by considerable pain, posing challenges for patient tolerance. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of combining cryoanalgesia spray (CA) with topical anesthesia utilizing a cream containing liposomal lidocaine at a concentration of 40 mg/g, with the objective of mitigating the pain associated with intradermal BoNT-A injection for PPH treatment. Nineteen participants, aged ≥18 years and afflicted with severe PPH, were enrolled in a double-blind randomized vehicle-controlled trial. Patient-perceived pain during the procedure was quantified using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Statistical analysis was applied to the collected data. The combination of CA and the topical application of liposomal lidocaine during BoNT-A treatment for PPH resulted in diminished pain compared to CA alone and the combination of CA with the application of a basic cream. Topical anesthesia through the application of a liposomal lidocaine-containing cream emerged as a facile, secure, and efficacious approach for alleviating the pain associated with intradermal BoNT-A injection in PPH treatment. Furthermore, it demonstrated compatibility with CA, thereby offering a comprehensive strategy for pain management during BoNT-A administration.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Idiopathichyperhidrosis is a dysfunctional disorder involving eccrine sweat glands and its impact on patients' daily quality of life is well-known. Unlike some years ago, when only poor effective and safe therapeutic alternatives were available, nowadays, several emerging pharmacological active substances have gained significant space as treatment options. AREAS COVERED The authors report on, in this narrative review, the emerging data from the literature focusing on the pharmacological treatments to draw up a drug treatments flow-chart for patients with idiopathic hyperhidrosis, taking into consideration specific differences among axillary, palmoplantar and craniofacial hyperhidrosis. EXPERT OPINION Idiopathic hyperhidrosis, regardless of the site of involvement, remains a functional disorder that places a significant burden on patients. After balancing efficacy against adverse events, systemic therapy, although off-label for all forms of hyperhidrosis can represent an additive therapeutic option for patients with insufficient response to topical treatment according to a step wise therapeutic approach. Until the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying hyperhidrosis are clear, and the etiological therapeutic approach become realistic, the greatest challenge in the therapeutic management of hyperhidrotic patients seems to be the search for the most convenient combination between different therapeutic modalities (topical and systemic agents, and botulinum toxins) to achieve long-term control of the disease symptoms.

Abstract
Hyperhidrosis can seriously impair patients' quality of life. Medical history, including heredity and hyperhidrosis during youth, as well as current age and time elapsed since menopause, is important to consider when distinguishing between postmenopausal hyperhidrosis and vasomotor symptoms to enable adequate treatment. This report concerns a subgroup of eight postmenopausal patients participating in a randomized controlled trial regarding botulinum toxin (Btx) type B treatment in craniofacial hyperhidrosis. Even though the sample size is small and the enrolment is not yet completed, the promising data collected hitherto are interesting to present in advance because this subtype of craniofacial hyperhidrosis is often underrecognized and challenging to treat. Patients were randomized to receive Btx type B or placebo. Measurements were performed before treatment and 3 ± 1 weeks after. The Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) score was improved for all patients after Btx type B treatment (n = 3) with a median decrease of 9 points (90% median improvement). The placebo group (n = 5) had a median increase of 2 points (-18% median decline). When the same group (n = 5) received Btx type B (open) the DLQI score decreased with a median of 7 points compared with baseline (91% median improvement). Treatment-related adverse events were temporary and did not prevent improvement of life quality. Furthermore, background data evaluation uncovered interesting findings regarding vasomotor symptoms in relation to postmenopausal hyperhidrosis. In conclusion, the results indicated that Btx type B seems to be a safe and effective treatment in postmenopausal craniofacial hyperhidrosis. Further research is encouraged.

Abstract
Hyperhidrosis (HH) is a chronic disorder of excess sweat production that may have a significant adverse effect on quality of life. A variety of treatment modalities currently exist to manage HH. Initial treatment includes lifestyle and behavioral recommendations. Antiperspirants are regarded as the first-line therapy for primary focal HH and can provide significant benefit. Iontophoresis is the primary remedy for palmar and plantar HH. Botulinum toxin injections are administered at the dermal-subcutaneous junction and serve as a safe and effective treatment option for focal HH. Oral systemic agents are reserved for treatment-resistant cases or for generalized HH. Energy-delivering devices such as lasers, ultrasound technology, microwave thermolysis, and fractional microneedle radiofrequency may also be utilized to reduce focal sweating. Surgery may be considered when more conservative treatments have failed. Local surgical techniques, particularly for axillary HH, include excision, curettage, liposuction, or a combination of these techniques. Sympathectomy is the treatment of last resort when conservative treatments are unsuccessful or intolerable, and after accepting secondary compensatory HH as a potential complication. A review of treatment modalities for HH and a sequenced approach are presented.

Abstract
Primary hyperhidrosis (PH) is a common pathological condition related to excessive sweating. It may be associated with depression. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyse and compare depression scores between subjects without PH (degree-I) and patients with PH (degrees-II, -III, and -IV). The secondary aim was to describe and compare depression scores among subjects with different PH degrees (I-without perceptible perspiration, II-tolerable perspiration, III-hardly tolerable perspiration, and IV-intolerable perspiration). A sample of 100 subjects with a median age of 23.00 ± 6.00 years was recruited from an outpatient medical centre, where medical history data were registered. The degree of PH was determined using the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale from degrees I (mild) to IV (very severe). The depression scores were analysed using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Statistically significant differences (P < 0.001) were observed for higher BDI scores in the patients with PH (degrees II, III, and IV) than in those without PH (degree-I). Kruskal-Wallis tests demonstrated statistically significant differences for BDI scores (P < 0.001), with higher values for degree-III with respect to degree-I and degree-IV with respect to degree-I. Patients with a greater degree (especially III/IV) of PH showed higher BDI scores compared with subjects without PH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of primary hyperhidrosis in the city of Botucatu, Brazil, and to evaluate how this disorder affects the quality of life in those suffering from it. METHODS A population survey was conducted in order to identify cases of hyperhidrosis among residents in the urban area of the city, selected by systematic cluster sampling. In accordance with the census maps of the city, the sample size should be at least 4,033 participants. Ten interviewers applied a questionnaire that evaluated the presence of excessive sweating and invited the subjects who reported hyperhidrosis to be evaluated by a physician in order to confirm the diagnosis. RESULTS A total of 4,133 residents, in 1,351 households, were surveyed. Excessive sweating was reported by 85 residents (prevalence = 2.07%), of whom 51 (60%) were female. Of those 85 respondents, 51 (60%) agreed to undergo medical evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and only 23 (45%) were diagnosed with primary hyperhidrosis (prevalence = 0.93%). Of the 23 subjects diagnosed with primary hyperhidrosis, 11 (48%) reported poor or very poor quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Although the prevalence of self-reported excessive sweating was greater than 2%, the actual prevalence of primary hyperhidrosis in our sample was 0.93% and nearly 50% of the respondents with primary hyperhidrosis reported impaired quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the amount of sweat released to skin surface increases due to the over-active eccrine sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis causes considerable psychosocial distress in affected people. It affects the quality of life and leads to social anxiety disorders. AIMS No study has been conducted in our country to investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data of patients with hyperhidrosis. In this study, we aimed to retrospectively investigate the clinical and demographic characteristics, causes of sweating and laboratory findings in patients treated for hyperhidrosis at our outpatient clinic and to compare these data with the literature data. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review was conducted on medical records of patients diagnosed with and treated for hyperhidrosis at outpatient clinic between 2014 and 2017. Adults aged over 18 years were included in study. Age and gender of patients, type and localization of sweating, duration of disease, age of onset of sweating, presence of stress, fever, joint pain and comorbidity, family history, medication use, and examination results were recorded. RESULTS Records of a total of 70 patients consisting of 30 men and 40 women with hyperhidrosis were examined. Overall mean age was 37.1 years. Mean age was 41 years in women and 32 years in men. Most frequent forms were palmoplantar and axillary hyperhidrosis for primary hyperhidrosis (primary HH), and head-neck and generalized hyperhidrosis for secondary hyperhidrosis (secondary HH). Most common comorbidities were diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, non-specific joint and bone pain, cardiovascular disease, and neuropsychiatric disease. Cases with secondary HH had a history of drug use (antithyroid drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidiabetic agents, antidepressants, and antihypertensives). CONCLUSION This is the first study that investigated the characteristics of patients with primary and secondary HH in our country. These characteristics can help determine the cause and apply treatment for hyperhidrosis by an appropriate examination and approach.

Abstract
Perspiration monitoring can be utilized for the detection of certain diseases, such as thermoregulation and mental disorders, particularly when the patients are unaware of such disorders or are having difficulty expressing their symptoms. Until now, several devices for perspiration monitoring have been developed; however, such devices tend to have a relatively large exterior, considerable power consumption, and/or less sensitivity. Recently, we developed a small, wireless device for perspiration monitoring. The device consists of a temperature/relative humidity (T/RH) sensor, battery-driven small data logger, and silica gel as a desiccant in a small cylindrical exterior. The T/RH sensor is placed between the detection windows (through which the water vapor from the skin enters) and the silica gel. The underlying principle of the perspiration monitoring device is based on Fick's law of diffusion, which means that water vapor flux from the skin to the silica gel (i.e. transepidermal water loss and perspiration) can be captured by change in humidity at the T/RH sensor. In addition, a baseline subtraction method was adopted to distinguish perspiration and transepidermal water loss. As shown in the previous report, the developed device can monitor the perspiration at any sites of the body in an easy, wireless manner. However, detailed methods of how to use the device have not been disclosed yet. In this article, therefore, we would like to show the point-by-point tutorials of how to use the device for perspiration monitoring, by showing the sympathetic activity test with the sympathetic skin response monitoring as an example.

Abstract
Palmar hyperhidrosis affects up to 3% of the population and inflict significant impact on quality of life. It is characterized by chronic excessive sweating, not related to the necessity of heat loss. It evolves from a localized hyperactivity of the sympathetic autonomic system and can be triggered by stressful events. In this study, the authors discuss clinical findings, pathophysiological, diagnostic and therapeutic issues (clinical and surgical) related to palmar hyperhidrosis.

Abstract
Hyperhidrosis is defined as the production of sweat beyond what is physiologically necessary to maintain thermal homeostasis. This disease state may (and typically does) have a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life. Medications including antiperspirants, anticholinergics, and botulinum toxin have been shown to be effective in the management of hyperhidrosis. Several medical device technologies have also proven to be effective. This review article will explore the current and emerging pharmacological and medical device treatments for hyperhidrosis and provide a framework for treating patients who suffer with primary forms of hyperhidrosis.

Abstract
Current published estimates of the prevalence of hyperhidrosis in the United States are outdated and underestimate the true prevalence of the condition. The objectives of this study are to provide an updated estimate of the prevalence of hyperhidrosis in the US population and to further assess the severity and impact of sweating on those affected by the condition. For the purposes of obtaining prevalence, a nationally representative sample of 8160 individuals were selected using an online panel, and information as to whether or not they experience hyperhidrosis was obtained. The 393 individuals (210 female, 244 non-Hispanic white, 27 black, mean age 40.3, SE 0.64) who indicated that they have hyperhidrosis were asked further questions, including body areas impacted, severity of symptoms, age of onset, and socioemotional impact of the condition. Current results estimate the prevalence of hyperhidrosis at 4.8 %, which represents approximately 15.3 million people in the United States. Of these, 70 % report severe excessive sweating in at least one body area. In spite of this, only 51 % have discussed their excessive sweating with a healthcare professional. The main reasons are a belief that hyperhidrosis is not a medical condition and that no treatment options exist. The current study’s findings with regard to age of onset and prevalence by body area generally align with the previous research. However, current findings suggest that the severity and prevalence are both higher than previously thought, indicating a need for greater awareness of the condition and its associated treatment options among medical professionals.

Abstract
A small and wireless device that can capture the temporal pattern of perspiration by a novel structure of water vapor collection combined with reusable desiccant has been developed. The novel device consists of a small cylindrical case with a temperature/relative humidity sensor, battery-driven data logger, and silica gel (desiccant). Water vapor of perspiration was detected by the change in relative humidity and then adsorbed by silica gel, allowing continuous recording of perspiration within a closed and wireless chamber, which has not been previously achieved. By comparative experiments using the commercially-available perspiration monitoring device, the developed device could measure perspiration as efficiently as the conventional one, with a normalized cross coefficient of 0.738 with 6 s delay and the interclass correlation coefficient [ICC(2, 1)] of 0.84. These results imply a good agreement between the conventional and developed devices, and thus suggest the applicability of the developed device for perspiration monitoring.

Abstract
Background: Primary axillary hyperhidrosis (PAH) is a common condition with a great impact on the patient's quality of life (QOL). It is associated with serious social, emotional, and occupational distress. The aim of this study was to investigate the QOL in patients with PAH before and after treatment with fractionated microneedle radiofrequency (FMR). Materials and Methods: We evaluated 25 patients with severe PAH. Each patient had three sessions of FMR treatment using a novel applicator at 3-week intervals. The study was based on Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) Questionnaires. Patients were evaluated at baseline and 3 months after the last session. Results: Our patients included 32% males and 68% females. The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of subjects was 30.2 ± 6.27 years. The mean ± SD of the DLQI before and after treatment was 12.96 ± 5.93, and 4.29 ± 2.21, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the before and after intervention (P < 0.001). No major, permanent adverse effects were shown. Conclusion: Treatment with FMR can improve the DLQI of patients with PAH.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is characterized by significant losses of important micronutrients due to metabolic basis of the disease and its complications. Evidence of changes in trace mineral and vitamin metabolism as a consequence of type 2 diabetes is reviewed in this chapter. This review is not a meta-analysis but an overview of the micronutrient status, metabolic needs, and potential micronutrient requirements in type 2 diabetics. This chapter will not concentrate on vitamin D and type 2 diabetes as this is a topic that has been extensively reviewed before. The less well-known micronutrients notably zinc, magnesium, chromium, copper, manganese, iron, selenium, vanadium, B-group vitamins, and certain antioxidants are assessed. While some evidence is available to demonstrate the positive influence of micronutrient supplementation on glycemic control, much remains to be investigated. Additional research is necessary to characterize better biomarkers of micronutrient status and requirements in type 2 diabetics. The optimal level of micronutrient supplementation to achieve glucose homeostasis in type 2 diabetics remains a challenge.

Abstract
Clinical features, anatomy and physiology of hyperhidrosis are presented with a review of the world literature on treatment. Level of drug efficacy is defined according to the guidelines of the American Academy of Neurology. Topical agents (glycopyrrolate and methylsulfate) are evidence level B (probably effective). Oral agents (oxybutynin and methantheline bromide) are also level B. In a total of 831 patients, 1 class I and 2 class II blinded studies showed level B efficacy of OnabotulinumtoxinA (A/Ona), while 1 class I and 1 class II study also demonstrated level B efficacy of AbobotulinumtoxinA (A/Abo) in axillary hyperhidrosis (AH), collectively depicting Level A evidence (established) for botulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A). In a comparator study, A/Ona and A/Inco toxins demonstrated comparable efficacy in AH. For IncobotulinumtoxinA (A/Inco) no placebo controlled studies exist; thus, efficacy is Level C (possibly effective) based solely on the aforementioned class II comparator study. For RimabotulinumtoxinB (B/Rima), one class III study has suggested Level U efficacy (insufficient data). In palmar hyperhidrosis (PH), there are 3 class II studies for A/Ona and 2 for A/Abo (individually and collectively level B for BoNT-A) and no blinded study for A/Inco (level U). For B/Rima the level of evidence is C (possibly effective) based on 1 class II study. Botulinum toxins (BoNT) provide a long lasting effect of 3–9 months after one injection session. Studies on BoNT-A iontophoresis are emerging (2 class II studies; level B); however, data on duration and frequency of application is inconsistent.

Abstract
Introduction Unilateral hyperhidrosis can be a neurological manifestation of irritations of the central or peripheral nervous system. Case presentation We present the case of a 67-year-old German man who had hyperhidrosis of his right upper body quadrant (including face, arm, and chest) following intrathoracic surgery of a left-sided pleural lipoma. Conclusion An isolated unilateral hyperhidrosis might occur after intrathoracic surgery. Besides anticholinergic drugs the use of botulinum toxin should be considered.

Abstract
Mucinous eccrine naevus (MEN) is an extremely rare variant of eccrine naevus. There are only nine reported cases in the English literature. We report a 3-month-old boy with a congenital lesion on the lower back, and review the other cases in the literature. In most cases, MEN presents before puberty. The commonest presentation is a unilateral, solitary, brownish nodule without hyperhidrosis occurring on the legs. The diagnosis of this condition is confirmed by the characteristic histopathological features. Treatment options may be considered if symptomatic.

Abstract
Significant controversies surround the optimal treatment of primary hyperhidrosis of the hands, axillae, feet, and face. The world's literature on hyperhidrosis from 1991 to 2009 was obtained through PubMed. There were 1,097 published articles, of which 102 were clinical trials. Twelve were randomized clinical trials and 90 were nonrandomized comparative studies. After review and discussion by task force members of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons' General Thoracic Workforce, expert consensus was reached from which specific treatment strategies are suggested. These studies suggest that primary hyperhidrosis of the extremities, axillae or face is best treated by endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS). Interruption of the sympathetic chain can be achieved either by electrocautery or clipping. An international nomenclature should be adopted that refers to the rib levels (R) instead of the vertebral level at which the nerve is interrupted, and how the chain is interrupted, along with systematic pre and postoperative assessments of sweating pattern, intensity and quality-of-life. The recent body of literature suggests that the highest success rates occur when interruption is performed at the top of R3 or the top of R4 for palmar-only hyperhidrosis. R4 may offer a lower incidence of compensatory hyperhidrosis but moister hands. For palmar and axillary, palmar, axillary and pedal and for axillary-only hyperhidrosis interruptions at R4 and R5 are recommended. The top of R3 is best for craniofacial hyperhidrosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Primary hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating in a defined region of the body. It should not be considered a purely cosmetic problem as it has a significant impact on the social and professional relationships of affected individuals. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical profile of patients with primary hyperhidrosis and assess the results obtained with the use of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) in clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 52 patients (39 women and 13 men) with a diagnosis of primary hyperhidrosis treated for the first time with BTX-A. All patients completed a questionnaire that included the following information: age; sex; profession; age at onset, family history, and site of hyperhidrosis; accompanying signs and symptoms, and previous treatment; time to effect of BTX-A; local or systemic side effects; and severity of hyperhidrosis before and after BTX-A treatment. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Primary hyperhidrosis began during puberty in 61.5% of the patients included in the study, 75% were women, and the mean age was 29.9 years. In 36.5% of patients, first-degree relatives also had primary hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis was classified as palmar in 61.5% of cases, plantar in 53.8%, and axillary in 59.6%. Other sites were affected less frequently. The most common accompanying symptoms were facial erythema (32.7%), palpitations (30.7%), muscle tension (28.8%), shivering (23%), and headache (17.3%). Treatment with BTX-A was well tolerated and there was a highly significant reduction in the severity of hyperhidrosis 2 months after performing the treatment (P<0.001).

Abstract
Primary focal hyperhidrosis is a disorder of idiopathic excessive sweating that typically affects the axillae, palms, soles, and face. The disorder, which affects up to 2.8% of the US population, is associated with considerable physical, psychosocial, and occupational impairments. Current therapeutic strategies include topical aluminum salts, tap-water iontophoresis, oral anticholinergic agents, local surgical approaches, and sympathectomies. These treatments, however, have been limited by a relatively high incidence of adverse effects and complications. Non-surgical treatment complications are typically transient, whereas those of surgical therapies may be permanent and significant. Recently, considerable evidence suggests that botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections into hyperhidrotic areas can considerably reduce focal sweating in multiple areas without major adverse effects. BTX-A has therefore shown promise as a potential replacement for more invasive treatments after topical aluminum salts have failed. This article reviews the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of primary focal hyperhidrosis, with an emphasis on recent research evidence supporting the use of BTX-A injections for this indication.

Abstract
Background: While excessive sweating is considered by many to be a benign condition, the physical and psychosocial impact it can have on hyperhidrosis sufferers is not always fully appreciated. Methods: A retrospective review of our pharmacy's patient records with the presenting complaint of sweating was conducted. The review covered a 2-year span and consisted of 2517 records. Using a structured questionnaire, patient information was collected via e-mail, as well as telephone and face-to-face interviews by pharmacists. Patients described their difficulties and the different coping methods they would employ to alleviate or hide their excessive sweating on different areas such as the underarms, face/scalp, hands, feet, and torso/groin. Results: Underarm sweating is the most frequent area for which both male and female patients seek help, followed by hands, feet, and face/neck. For males over 40, face and neck sweating is the most frequent area of concern, whereas for females over 40, underarms remain a top priority. Patients report numerous instances of feeling isolated, depressed, and a lack of self-confidence in all areas of professional and social life. Conclusion: It is important to recognize that for some patients, excessive sweating can be a severely debilitating condition. Appropriate action must be taken in order to improve the patient's quality of life.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of primary palmar hyperhidrosis (PPH) among adolescents in Fuzhou City of PR China. METHODS Stratified cluster sampling was carried out and a cross-sectional epidemiological survey by questionnaire was applied among 13,000 college and high school students. RESULTS The prevalence rate of PPH was 4.59% affecting both sexes equally. The peak age of onset is 6-16 years, accounting for 95.6% of the PPH population. Positive family history was found in 15.3% PPH cases. Besides palms, axillae and soles can be also affected. CONCLUSIONS PPH affects a larger group of individuals than previously reported. More measures should be taken to enhance the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of PPH.

Abstract
Idiopathic localized hyperhidrosis, called for hyperhidrosis, affects almost 3% of the US population. The most frequent anatomic sites of involvement include the axillae, palms, soles, and face. For those affected, this condition can be extremely socially debilitating and interfere with work activities. Until recently, frequently ineffective topical regimens or problematic surgical procedures have been the treatments of choice. Since 1996, intracutaneous injections of botulinum toxin have been used as a minimally invasive treatment for this condition with numerous studies documenting safety, efficacy, and extremely high levels of patient satisfaction. Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2004 for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary or idiopathic hyperhidrosis (PH) is a disorder of excessive eccrine sweating glands that mainly affects the axillae and the palms. The treatment options for PH involve a range of topical or systemic medication and/or surgical invasive techniques. The common topical treatments are aluminium salts which act by blocking the duct of the eccrine gland or by atrophying the secretory cells. Recently, a new low-residue thermophobic foam formulation (VersaFoam, Mipharm Spa, Milan, Italy), containing 20% of an aluminium salt (sesquichlorhydrate), has been developed. The foam is easy to apply especially in hairy body sites. OBJECTIVE to evaluate the efficacy and the tolerability of the new aluminium salt foam in the treatment of axillary and palmar PH. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty patients were enrolled in a single-centre, open-label follow-up study. The Minor test score (range 0-3) and the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), were used to evaluate the amount of sweating and the impact on quality of life. The foam was applied to dry, clean skin, every night during the first week of treatment, and three times a week during the second week of treatment. Evaluation of the results was performed at baseline and at 7 and 15 days after treatment. Patients were monitored throughout the study for adverse events. RESULTS All of the 20 enrolled patients completed the study. The foam resulted in a significant reduction of the Minor score in comparison with baseline values in both the axillary (p = 0.0002) and palm regions (p = 0.0047). By the end of treatment (day 15) the foam had reduced the amount of sweating in the axillae and palm regions by 50% (Minor score: 4.1 vs. 8.1) and 53% (Minor score: 4.0 vs. 8.5), respectively. Use of the foam showed a positive impact in the DLQI for patients with axillary but not palm hyperhidrosis. No side effects were reported during the study duration by the patients. CONCLUSION The new foam has been shown to be an effective topical treatment in reducing sweating in patients with axillary and palm PH. This formulation is well tolerated in the short term. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the efficacy and safety in the medium and long term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH) is defined as excessive sweating typically localized to specific body areas such as axillae, hands and feet. An association between PFH and anxiety as well as depressive syndromes has been suggested. OBJECTIVES To investigate a possible association between PFH and anxiety, depression, social phobia and quality of life, and to study the effect of treatment with botulinum toxin A on these factors. METHODS PFH was confirmed clinically and by gravimetry. To measure anxiety and depressive syndromes several German versions of standardized questionnaires were used: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory G Form X2 (STAI), Social Phobia Scale (SPS), Symptom Checklist of Derogatis (SCL-90-R), subscales 'Social Insecurity', 'Depression', 'Anxiety' and 'Phobia', and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D). Quality of life was assessed using Skindex. Two analyses were performed. The first analysis included all patients with PFH, the second analysis only patients with PFH who were treated with botulinum toxin A. In the latter group the questionnaires were repeated 2-4 weeks after treatment. RESULTS For the total group at baseline the values for STAI, SCL-90-R, HADS-D and SPS were well within the normal range. However, in the group of patients treated with botulinum toxin A, the mean +/- SD SPS score was 17.6 +/- 15.5, i.e. above the normal range. Quality of life was impaired, with a mean +/- SD Skindex score of 24.3 +/- 5.7 at baseline. Treatment with botulinum toxin A led to a significant reduction in all investigated symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Despite an impaired quality of life, patients with PFH in general do not show increased symptoms of anxiety, depression or social phobia. Only in the subgroup of patients treated with botulinum toxin A was the SPS increased at baseline. Treatment with botulinum toxin A led to a marked improvement in all factors investigated.

Abstract
Inguinal Hyperhidrosis (IH) is a focal and primary form of hyperhidrosis in which the individual has intense sweating in the inguinal region. It usually appears in adolescence, not later than the age of 25, in the most cases, and continues into adulthood. With a sample of 26 patients we described Inguinal Hyperhidrosis (IH). Fifty percent of the patients have a positive family history of this condition or other forms of focal or generalized hyperhidrosis, which suggests a familial pattern. Biopsies performed on the inguinal area in a patient with IH and control patient showed normal histology. Excessive perspiration in the inguinal area significantly affects the quality of life of the patients. It is an embarrassing condition that produces large wet stains on the clothes, therefore making daily activities difficult and compromising the emotional, professional and social life of the affected patients. The therapies commonly used for other forms of focal hyperhidrosis are not yet referred in the literature specifically for IH. Intradermal injections from botulinum toxin provide positive results for the patients and controls the sweating for 6 months or more. Abstract
BACKGROUND The current epidemiologic data on hyperhidrosis are scarce and insufficient to provide precise prevalence or impact estimates. OBJECTIVE We sought to estimate the prevalence of hyperhidrosis in the US population and assess the impact of sweating on those affected by axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS A nationally representative sample of 150,000 households was screened by mailed survey for hyperhidrosis and projected to the US population based on US census data. Ascertainment of hyperhidrosis was based on a question that asked whether participants experienced excessive or abnormal/unusual sweating. RESULTS The prevalence of hyperhidrosis in the survey sample was 2.9% (6800 individuals). The projected prevalence of hyperhidrosis in the United States is 2.8% (7.8 million individuals), and 50.8% of this population (4.0 million individuals) reported that they have axillary hyperhidrosis (1.4% of the US population). Only 38% had discussed their sweating with a health care professional. Approximately one third of individuals with axillary hyperhidrosis (0.5% of the US population or 1.3 million individuals) reported that their sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes, or is intolerable and always interferes, with daily activities. CONCLUSION Hyperhidrosis affects a much larger proportion of the US population than previously reported. More than half of these individuals have axillary hyperhidrosis, in which sweating can result in occupational, emotional, psychological, social, and physical impairment.

Abstract
Primary hyperhidrosis is a troublesome disorder of excessive perspiration that affects as much as 1 percent of the population. Sufferers are usually young and are often affected by related social, professional, and psychological problems. Many methods for treating hyperhidrosis exist; however, no single treatment is without its weakness or complications. This article aims to clarify the issues related to the use of each treatment modality, including the most recently proposed method using botulinum toxin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Compensatory hyperhidrosis is the commonest complication of sympathectomy, but there's no known effective treatment. METHODS Botulinum toxin type A (a total dose of 300 MU, 1.0 MU/cm(2)) was used successfully to treat a 68-year-old male with a 5-year history of compensatory hyperhidrosis of the anterior chest following thoracic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. RESULTS The hyperhidrosis resolved for 8 months without systemic side effects. CONCLUSION Intracutaneous injection of botulinum toxin is a fast, safe, effective and well-accepted approach for treatment of compensatory hyperhidrosis.

Abstract
Palmar hyperhidrosis (i.e., excessive sweating of the palms) usually appears at puberty and causes psychological, social, educational, and occupational problems for people who suffer from it. Although many treatments have been used, the only treatment that permanently eradicates the condition is sympathectomy. The advent of thoracoscopic surgery has allowed surgeons to perform sympathectomy as an outpatient procedure that is safe and effective and produces life-changing results for patients.
