Abstract
Mirabegron is the first b3-adrenoceptor agonist to enter clinical practice and has been approved for the treatment of symptoms of OAB. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the mirabegron has an effect on depression, anxiety, learning, and memory. We investigated the effects of mirabegron on depression, anxiety, learning and memory by using forced swimming test, elevated plus maze test, passive avoidance and Morris water maze in mice. Imipramine and mirabegron (3, 6 and 9 mg/kg) significantly reduced immobility time in forced swimming test. Diazepam and mirabegron (3, 6 and 9 mg/kg) significantly increased the time spent in open arms and the number of entries to the open arms in elevated plus maze test. Furthermore, cognitive performance impaired with scopolamine has been significantly improved with 9 mg/kg mirabegron. Mirabegron (6 and 9 mg/kg) significantly increased the time spent in the target quadrant in naive mice. While scopolamine significantly increased the swimming speed, mirabegron (9 mg/kg) significantly decreased the swimming speed in scopolamine-treated mice. Mirabegron might be clinically useful for the treatment of OAB in elderly patients that should use drugs against depression and anxiety, without disrupt learning and memory.

Abstract
The world is experiencing one of the major viral outbreaks of this millennium, caused by a plus sense single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Coronaviridae family, COVID-19, declared as pandemic by WHO. The clinical manifestations vary from asymptomatic to mild symptoms like fever, dry cough, and diarrhea, with further increase in severity leading to the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Though primary manifestations are respiratory and cardiac, various studies have shown the neuroinvasive capability of this virus resulting in neurological complications, which sometimes can precede common typical symptoms like fever and cough. Common neurological symptoms are headache, dizziness, anosmia, dysgeusia, confusion, and muscle weakening, progressing toward severe complications like cerebrovascular disease, seizures, or paralysis. Older adults and critically ill people are in the high risk group and have shown severe neurological symptoms upon infection. COVID-19 also has a profound impact on the mental health of people across the world. In this review, we briefly discuss the neurological pathologies and psychological impact due to COVID-19, which has not only stressed the physical health of people but has also created social and economic problems resulting in mental health issues.

Abstract
It has been suggested that the metabolic enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) is a biological mediator of inflammation related to the psychopathology of depression, with a Kynurenine (KYN) increase in the Tryptophan (TRP) metabolic pathway, resulting in reduced Serotonin. In this study, we examined KYN, TRP, and the ratio of KYN to TRP concentrations × 103 (KT Ratio) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in (a) a group of depressed patients and (b) a control group of patients referred to a neurologic outpatient clinic for whom no specific diagnosis could be established. The KT Ratio is considered an index that represents IDO. The participants were examined with the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), the Montgomery Aasberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), and a neuropsychological test battery. We found no significant differences between the two study groups with respect to TRP, KYN, or KT Ratio in serum or CSF. Differences in neuropsychological performance between the two patient groups could be seen in the following tests: Animal Fluency, Digit Symbol, the DKEFS Color-Interference Test (Naming Part), Trail Making Test A and B, and the Grooved Pegboard Non-dominant Hand. KYN in serum correlated highly with KYN in CSF. KYN in serum correlated significantly with both age and gender. When analyzing males and females separately, we found that women had a lower level of TRP in both serum (Mann-Whitney U-test: TRP in Serum; p = 0.001) and CSF (Mann-Whitney U-test: TRP in CSF; p = 0.003). Women had a lower level of KYN in serum (p = 0.029) than men did. Age was positively associated with KYN. KYN in CSF correlated only with age, however; there were no gender differences. No significant relationship was seen between BDI-II and MADRS on the one hand, and KYN and TRP on the other. KYN in CSF as the KT Ratio in both serum and CSF was associated with neuropsychological performance. Thus, we suggest that KYN and KT Ratio are related more strongly to neuropsychological performance than to affective symptoms in depression.

Abstract
Human infections with foodborne pathogenic organisms are relatively well described in terms of their overt physical symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever, and associated sequelae. Indeed, some of these are key for diagnosis and treatment, although it should be noted that, for some foodborne pathogens, the physical symptoms might be more diffuse, particularly those associated with some of the foodborne parasites. In contrast, the impact of these pathogens on mental health is less well described, and symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and general malaise are usually ignored when foodborne infections are recorded. Despite this, it is generally accepted that there are several psychiatric disorders of unknown etiology that may be associated with microbial pathogens. Depression, autism, hypochondriasis and anxiety, schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome probably have multiple contributing causes, among which foodborne pathogens may play a decisive or contributory role, possibly sharing pathophysiological pathways with other environmental triggers. This review focuses on foodborne parasites and bacterial pathogens. Some foodborne parasites, such as metacestodes of Taenia solium and tissue cysts (bradyzoites) of Toxoplasma gondii , may affect mental health by directly infecting the brain. In contrast, bacterial infections and other parasitic infections may contribute to mental illness via the immune system and/or by influencing neurotransmission pathways. Thus, cytokines, for example, have been associated with depression and schizophrenia. However, infectious disease models for psychiatry require a more complete understanding of the relationship between psychiatric disorders and microbial triggers. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on the role of foodborne parasitic and bacterial pathogens in mental illness and identifies some of the gaps that should be addressed to improve diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues that are not solely related to psychiatric factors.

Abstract
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare the concentrations of KYNA, 3-OH-KYN and the cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 in patients with depression vs. healthy controls as well as in patients with depression treated pharmacologically vs. those treated using ECT. We also evaluated the relationship between the concentrations of KYNA, 3-OH-KYN and the cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 and clinical improvement measured on the MADRS scale in patients treated pharmacologically and those treated with ECT.
Subjects and methods: The study group comprised 29 patients aged 28 to 60 years with a diagnosis of a major depressive episode. Eleven of the patients received pharmacological treatment and 18 were treated with ECT.
Patients were assayed for serum levels of KYNA and the cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α. Clinical improvement was measured on the MADRS depression rating scale and the clinical global impression (CGI) scale.
Results: Significant differences were found in KYNA levels between depressive patients and healthy controls. Pharmacological treatment significantly contributed to the increase in KYNA levels and ECT – to the increase in TNF-α levels in depressive patients.
Conclusions:
Depressive patients have significantly lower concentrations of KYNA than healthy individuals
Depressive patients who have undergone pharmacological treatment have significantly higher KYNA concentrations than before treatment.
Depressive patients who have undergone ECT treatment have significantly lower TNF-α concentrations than before treatment.
High pre-treatment levels of IL-6 are associated with a lower MADRS improvement index in pharmacologically treated patients with depression.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are the most common behavioral disorders, and they exhibit high comorbidity rates. The aim of the present study was to confirm the effects of Amibegron, the first selective beta 3 adrenergic agent, on anxiety and to demonstrate that different serotoninergic receptor subtypes are involved in this effect. We administered the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor antagonist WAY-100635, the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonist Ketanserin and the serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist Ondansetron in mice and evaluated their performance in the elevated plus-maze test. Mice administered with Amibegron (5 and 10 mg/kg) showed a dose-dependent prolonged time spent in the open arms and an increase in the number of entries into the open arms during the elevated plus-maze (EPM) test. However, in the control mice, administration of WAY, Ketanserin and Ondansetron demonstrated no effect on the time spent in the open arms and the number of entries into the open arms. In addition, these treatments all significantly reversed the effect of the Amibegron-induced (10 mg/kg) increase in the time spent in the open arms. However, only WAY and Ketanserin treatments reversed the Amibegron-induced increase in the number of entries into the open arms. In conclusion, Amibegron exerted a significant anxiolytic effect, which was as effective as Diazepam, in mice during the EPM test. This effect of Amibegron may be mediated by interactions with the serotonin 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A and 5-HT3 receptors.

Abstract
New therapeutic strategies against depression, with less side effects and thus greater efficacy in larger proportion of depressed patients, are needed. Amibegron (SR58611A) is the first selective β3 adrenergic agent that has been shown to possess a profile of antidepressant activity in rodents. To investigate the involvement of serotonin receptors in the effects of amibegron, we used the serotonin 5HT1A receptor antagonist WAY-100635 (WAY) or serotonin 5HT2A-2C receptor antagonist ketanserin or serotonin 5HT3 receptor antagonist ondansetron in mice forced swimming test (FST). The locomotor activity was evaluated by measuring the total distance moved in the apparatus and the speed of the animals in the open field test. Imipramine (30mg/kg) significantly reduced immobility time compared to vehicle-treated group while amibegron (5 and 10mg/kg) dose dependently reduced immobility time in the FST. WAY(0.1mg/kg), ondansetron (1mg/kg), ketanserin(5mg/kg) had no effect on immobility time in naive mice while all of the drugs partially and significantly reversed amibegron (10mg/kg) induced decreasement in the immobility time in FST. None of the drugs alter locomotor activity in the open field test. The antidepressant-like effect of amibegron in the FST seems to be mediated by an interaction with serotonin 5-HT1A, serotonin 5-HT2A-2C and serotonin 5-HT3 receptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anecdotal reports of mood disorder following infection with common respiratory viruses with neurotropic potential have been in existence since the last century. Nevertheless, systematic studies on the association between these viruses and mood disorders are lacking. METHODS Influenza A, B and coronavirus antibody titers were measured in 257 subjects with recurrent unipolar and bipolar disorder and healthy controls, by SCID. Pearson's χ² tests and logistic regression models were used to analyze associations between seropositivity for coronaviruses, influenza A and B viruses and the following: a) history of recurrent mood disorders b) having attempted suicide in the past c) uni- vs. bi-polarity and d) presence of psychotic symptoms during mood episodes. RESULTS Seropositivity for influenza A (p=0.004), B (p<0.0001) and coronaviruses (p<0.0001) were associated with history of mood disorders but not with the specific diagnosis of unipolar or bipolar depression. Seropositivity for influenza B was significantly associated with a history of suicide attempt (p=0.001) and history of psychotic symptoms (p=0.005). LIMITATIONS The design was cross-sectional. Socioeconomic factors, inflammatory markers, and axis II psychopathology were not assessed. CONCLUSIONS The association of seropositivity for influenza and coronaviruses with a history of mood disorders, and influenza B with suicidal behavior require replication in larger longitudinal samples. The need for these studies is additionally supported by the high incidence of these viral infections, the high prevalence of mood disorders, and resilience of suicide epidemics.

Abstract
In the present study, effect of SR 57227A, a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 (5-HT(3)) receptor agonist, on the firing activity of pyramidal neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was studied in normal rats and rats with 6-hydroxydopamine lesions of the substantia nigra pars compacta by using extracellular recording. Systemic administration of SR 57227A (40-640 μg/kg, i.v.) decreased the mean firing rate of pyramidal neurons in normal and the lesioned rats. This inhibition was significant only at doses higher than 320 μg/kg and 640 μg/kg in normal and the lesioned rats, respectively, and was reversed by i.v. administration of 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist tropisetron or GABA(A) receptor antagonist bicuculline. Furthermore, local application of SR 57227A (0.01 μg) in the mPFC inhibited the firing rate of pyramidal neurons in normal rats while having no effect on firing rate in the lesioned rats. The i.v. administration of bicuculline excited the pyramidal neurons in normal rats, and then local application of SR 57227A did not alter the mean firing rate of these neurons. However, these two drugs did not affect the activity of the pyramidal neurons in the lesioned rats. We conclude that activation of 5-HT(3) receptors inhibited pyramidal neurons in the mPFC of normal rats via GABAergic interneurons, and degeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway decreased response of the pyramidal neurons to SR 57227A, suggesting the dysfunction of 5-HT(3) receptors and/or down-regulation of the expression on GABAergic interneurons in the lesioned rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Epidemiological data on the prevalence of mood disorders demonstrate that major depressive disorder (MDD) is approximately twice as common in women as in men and that its first onset peaks during the reproductive years. We aimed to review key social, psychological, and biological factors that seem strongly implicated in the etiology of major depression and to focus on sex-specific aspects of depression, such as the role of a woman's reproductive life cycle in depressive symptomatology. METHODS A review of the literature, from 1965 to present, was conducted. RESULTS An integrated etiological model best explains gender and sex differences in depression. Social, psychological, and biological variables must be simultaneously taken into account. These vulnerabilities include (but are not limited to) gender-specific roles in society, life stress such as trauma, a tendency toward ruminative coping strategies, and the effects of sex hormones and genetic factors. CONCLUSIONS To effectively treat MDD in women and to prevent the recurrence of illness in vulnerable women, clinicians must understand the sex-specific aspects of mood disorders over the longitudinal course of women's reproductive lives. A biopsychosocial approach should, therefore, be the main focus of future research and practice, to eventually result in an integrated etiological model of depression in women. Based on the prevalence of MDD in women, timely screening, diagnosis, and intervention should be public health priorities.

Abstract
A large body of evidence corroborates the notion that deficiencies of serotonergic system are likely involved in the pathogenesis of both depression and anxiety. Activation of beta(3) adrenoceptors has been shown to increase brain tryptophan content suggesting an elevation of brain serotonin (5HT) synthesis. SR58611A is a selective beta(3) adrenergic agent possessing a profile of antidepressant activity in routine rodents' experimental models of depression. The present study was undertaken to evaluate in rodents the antidepressant properties of SR58611A and to assess its putative anxiolytic value in experimental models of depression and anxiety. Compared to the control group, SR58611A (0.1, 1, 5 or 10 mg/kg) caused a dose-dependent reduction in immobility of Wistar male rats in the forced swim test. The maximum dose appeared to be equivalent to an effective dose of clomipramine (50 mg/kg). In addition, acute injection of SR58611A induced in rats a dose-dependent decrease in grooming response to a novel environment (novelty-induced grooming test). For any dose, the effect was lower than that of diazepam (1 mg/kg). Chronic treatment with SR58611A resulted also in an increased social interaction time in the social interaction test without affecting motor activity of rats. Furthermore, similarly to diazepam a chronic treatment with the highest doses of SR58611A was followed by increased exploratory behavior in Swiss male mice exposed to the elevated plus maze test. These effects are mediated by beta(3) adrenoceptors since i.p. pretreatment with the selective beta(3) adrenoceptor antagonist SR59230A (5 mg/kg) blocked the effects of SR58611A. Finally, also the 5HT antagonist methysergide (2 mg/kg) prevented the antidepressant and anxiolytic-like activity of SR58611A indicating that 5HT transmission is strictly involved in its action.

Abstract
The use of complementary medicines in patients suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancer and depression is widely documented. Current studies suggest that the prevalence of the use of complementary medicines in patients with cancer ranges from 7% to 80%. In patients suffering from severe depression the use of complementary medicines may be >40%. The aim of the present review is to systematically explore the main dimensions that clinicians have to consider when advising patients suffering from these conditions. The Medline and Cochrane databases were searched for evidence relating to the benefits and risks of supplements in the treatment of cancer and depression, including the potential interactions with pharmaco- and radiotherapy. Supplements predominantly used by patients with cancer include vitamins A, C and E, β-carotene and ubiquinone 10. Supplements predominantly used by patients with depression include S-adenosylmethionine, l-tryptophan and 5-hydroxytryptophan and inositol. Supplements potentially used by both groups include n-3 fatty acids, Se and folic acid. Four dimensions are identified and discussed: effectiveness; safety; communication; medico-legal aspects. These dimensions have to be addressed in an illness- and case-specific context. This task can be complex given the emerging clinical evidence, patients' own preferences and expectations and current prescribing guidelines.

Abstract
In the research field of psychoneuroimmunology, accumulating evidence has indicated the existence of reciprocal communication pathways between nervous, endocrine and immune systems. In this respect, there has been increasing interest in the putative involvement of the immune system in psychiatric disorders. In the present review, the role of proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interferon (IFN)-gamma, in the aetiology and pathophysiology of major depression, is discussed. The 'cytokine hypothesis of depression' implies that proinflammatory cytokines, acting as neuromodulators, represent the key factor in the (central) mediation of the behavioural, neuroendocrine and neurochemical features of depressive disorders. This view is supported by various findings. Several medical illnesses, which are characterised by chronic inflammatory responses, e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, have been reported to be accompanied by depression. In addition, administration of proinflammatory cytokines, e.g. in cancer or hepatitis C therapies, has been found to induce depressive symptomatology. Administration of proinflammatory cytokines in animals induces 'sickness behaviour', which is a pattern of behavioural alterations that is very similar to the behavioural symptoms of depression in humans. The central action of cytokines may also account for the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis hyperactivity that is frequently observed in depressive disorders, as proinflammatory cytokines may cause HPA axis hyperactivity by disturbing the negative feedback inhibition of circulating corticosteroids (CSs) on the HPA axis. Concerning the deficiency in serotonergic (5-HT) neurotransmission that is concomitant with major depression, cytokines may reduce 5-HT levels by lowering the availability of its precursor tryptophan (TRP) through activation of the TRP-metabolising enzyme indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). Although the central effects of proinflammatory cytokines appear to be able to account for most of the symptoms occurring in depression, it remains to be established whether cytokines play a causal role in depressive illness or represent epiphenomena without major significance.

Abstract
Antibodies to serotonin in serum were investigated by ELISA in patients with paranoid schizophrenia (N=27), schizoaffective psychosis (N=38), depression (N=67), Alzheimer's disease (N=21), chronic alcoholism (N=43), rheumatoid arthritis (N=25), and multiple sclerosis (N=16), and in healthy volunteers (N=60). Increased antibody reactivity to serotonin was found in schizoaffective psychosis, chronic alcoholism, and rheumatoid arthritis. Decreased antibody reactivity to serotonin was found in multiple sclerosis and depression. These anti-serotonin antibodies belong to the class of so-called natural autoantibodies. Alterations of these natural autoantibodies could indicate a disturbance to the immune system. It is possible that these antibodies could also influence receptor function. Autoantibodies to neurotransmitters in a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders have not previously been reported.
