Abstract
In this work, we computed and analyzed, by means of density-based descriptors, the real-time evolution of both the locally excited (LE) and charge-transfer (CT) excited states for the planar and twisted conformations of the DMABN (4-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzonitrile) molecule using real-time time-dependent density functional theory (DFT) and three different exchange-correlation energy functionals (EXC) belonging to the same family (the PBE one). Our results based on the analysis of density-based descriptors show that the underlying EXC modifies the evolution in time of the density. In particular, comparing the frequency of density reorganization computed with the three functionals (PBE, PBE0, and LC-PBE), we found that the frequency of electronic interconversion of the individual determinants involved during the dynamics increases from PBE to PBE0 and to LC-PBE. This allows us to show that there is a correlation between the delocalization of the electronic density and the frequency of reorganization. In particular, the greater the mean hole-electron distance during the dynamics, the lower is the frequency of density reorganization.

Abstract
In an effort to expand the existing QUEST database of accurate vertical transition energies [Véril et al. WIREs Comput. Mol. Sci. 2021, 11, e1517], we have modeled more than 100 electronic excited states of different natures (local, charge-transfer, Rydberg, singlet, and triplet) in a dozen of mono- and di-substituted benzenes, including aniline, benzonitrile, chlorobenzene, fluorobenzene, nitrobenzene, among others. To establish theoretical best estimates for these vertical excitation energies, we have employed advanced coupled-cluster methods including iterative triples (CC3 and CCSDT) and, when technically possible, iterative quadruples (CC4). These high-level computational approaches provide a robust foundation for benchmarking a series of popular wave function methods. The evaluated methods all include contributions from double excitations (ADC(2), CC2, CCSD, CIS(D), EOM-MP2, STEOM-CCSD), along with schemes that also incorporate perturbative or iterative triples (ADC(3), CCSDR(3), CCSD(T)(a)⋆ $$ {}^{\star } $$ , and CCSDT-3). This systematic exploration not only broadens the scope of the QUEST database but also facilitates a rigorous assessment of different theoretical approaches in the framework of a homologous chemical series, offering valuable insights into the accuracy and reliability of these methods in such cases. We found that both ADC(2.5) and CCSDT-3 can provide very consistent estimates, whereas among less expensive methods SCS-CC2 is likely the most effective approach. Importantly, we show that some lower order methods may offer reasonable trends in the homologous series while providing quite large average errors, and vice versa. Consequently, benchmarking the accuracy of a model based solely on absolute transition energies may not be meaningful for applications involving a series of similar compounds.

Abstract
We study the accuracy of excited state (ES) geometries using optimally tuned LC-PBE functionals with tuning based on GW quasiparticle energies. We compare the results obtained with the PBE, PBE0, non-tuned, and tuned LC-PBE functionals with available high-level CC reference values as well as experimental data. First, we compare ES geometrical parameters obtained for three different types of systems: molecules composed of a few atoms, 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN), and conjugated dyes. To this end, we used wave-function results as benchmarks. Next, we evaluate the accuracy of the theoretically simulated spectra as compared to the experimental ones for five large dyes. Our results show that, besides small compact molecules for which tuning LC-PBE does not allow obtaining geometries more accurate than those computed with standard functionals, tuned range-separated functionals are clearly to be favored, not only for ES geometries but also for 0-0 energies, band shapes, and intensities for absorption and emission spectra. In particular, the results indicate that GW-tuned LC-PBE functionals provide improved matching with experimental spectra as compared to conventionally tuned functionals. It is an open question whether TD-DFT with GW-tuned functionals can qualitatively mimic the actual many-body Bethe-Salpeter (BSE/GW) formalism for which analytic ionic gradients remain to be developed.

Abstract
In this work, we assess the accuracy of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) many-body Green's function formalism, adopting the eigenvalue-self-consistent evGW exchange-correlation kernel, for the calculation of the excited-state (μES) and excess dipole moments (Δμ), the latter ones being the changes of dipole amplitude between the ground and excited states (ES), in organic dyes. We compare the results obtained with wave-function methods [ADC(2), CC2, and CCSD], time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and BSE/evGW levels of theory. First, we compute the evolution of the dipole moments of the two lowest singlet excited states of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) upon twisting of the amino group. Next, we use a set of 25 dyes having ES characters ranging from locally excited to charge transfer to determine both μES and Δμ. For DMABN our results show that BSE/evGW provides Δμ values closer to the CCSD reference and more consistent trends than TD-DFT. Moreover, a statistical analysis of both Δμ and μES for the set of 25 dyes shows that the BSE/evGW accuracy is comparable or sometimes slightly better than that of TD-M06-2X and TD-CAM-B3LYP, BSE/evGW outperforming TD-DFT in challenging cases (zwitterionic and cyanine transitions). Finally, the starting point dependency of BSE/evGW seems to be larger for Δμ, ES dipoles, and oscillator strengths than for transition energies.

Abstract
The recent ωLH22t range-separated local hybrid (RSLH) is shown to provide outstanding accuracy for the notorious benchmark problem of the two lowest excited-state potential energy curves for the amino group twist in 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN). However, the design of ωLH22t as a general-purpose functional resulted in less convincing performance for triplet excitations, which is an important advantage of previous LHs. Furthermore, ωLH22t uses 8 empirical parameters to achieve broad accuracy. In this work, the RSLH ωLH23ct-sir is constructed with minimal empiricism by optimizing its local mixing function prefactor and range-separation parameter for only 8 excitation energies. ωLH23ct-sir maintains the excellent performance of ωLH22t for the DMABN twist and charge-transfer benchmarks but significantly improves the errors for triplet excitation energies (0.17 vs 0.24 eV). Additional test calculations for the AE6BH6 thermochemistry test set and large dipole moment and static polarizability test sets confirm that the focus on excitation energies in the optimization of ωLH23ct-sir has not caused any dramatic errors for ground-state properties. Although ωLH23ct-sir cannot replace ωLH22t as a general-purpose functional, it is preferable for problems requiring a universally good description of localized and charge-transfer excitations of both singlet and triplet multiplicity. Current limitations on the application of ωLH23ct-sir and other RSLHs to the study of singlet-triplet gaps of emitters for thermally activated delayed fluorescence are discussed. This work also includes the first systematic analysis of the influence of the local mixing function prefactor and the range-separation parameter in an RSLH on different types of excitations.

Abstract
The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) processes of coumarin 307 (C307) in different solvents were investigated by performing steady-state/time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopic and steady-state photoluminescence spectroscopic characterizations in combination with time-dependent density functional theoretical calculation (TDDFT). The study unveiled the remarkable influence of solvent polarity and the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonds formed between the solutes and solvents on the relaxation dynamics of the electronic excited state. Significantly, the emergence of the TICT state was observed in polar solvents, specifically dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxidemethanol (DMSO), owing to their inherent polarity as well as the enhanced intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, even in a weak polar solvent such as methanol (MeOH), the TICT state was also observed due to the intensified hydrogen bonding effects. Conversely, nonpolar solvents, exemplified by 1,4-dioxane (Diox), resulted in the stabilization of the ICT state due to the augmented N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions. The experimental findings were corroborated by the computational calculations, thus ensuring the reliability of the conclusions drawn. Furthermore, schematic diagrams were presented to illustrate the mechanisms underlying the excited-state deactivation. Overall, this investigation contributes valuable mechanistic insights and provides a comprehensive understanding of the photochemical and photophysical properties exhibited by coumarin dyes.

Abstract
The present work aims at exploring the high electrophilic character of 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD-Cl) toward the morpholine group by an SNAr reaction in acetonitrile or water (thereafter referred to as NBD-Morph). The electron-donating ability of the morpholine causes intra-molecular charge transfer (ICT). In this report, we present a comprehensive study on the optical characteristics using UV-Vis, photoluminescence (cw-PL) and its time-resolved (TR-PL) to determine the properties of the emissive intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the NBD-Morph donor-acceptor system. An exhaustive theoretical investigation utilizing the density functional theory (DFT) and its extension TD-DFT methods is an essential complement of experiments to rationalize and understand the molecular structure and related properties. The findings from QTAIM, ELF, and RDG analyses establish that the bonding between morpholine and NBD moieties is of the electrostatic or hydrogen bond type. In addition, the Hirshfeld surfaces have been established to explore the types of interactions. Further, the non-linear optical (NLO) responses of the compound have been examined. The structure-property relationships obtained through the combined experimental and theoretical offer valuable insights for designing efficient NLO material.

Abstract
The puzzling case of the mixing between the charge transfer (CT) and local excited (LE) characters upon twisting of the geometry of N-phenylpyrrole (N-PP) is investigated considering the six low-lying singlet excited states (ES). The theoretical calculations of the potential energy surfaces (PES) have been performed for these states using a Coupled Cluster method accounting for the impact of the contributions from the triples, many-body Green's function GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) formalisms, as well as Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) using various exchange-correlation functionals. Our findings confirm that the BSE formalism is more reliable than TD-DFT for close-lying ES with mixed CT/LE nature. More specifically, BSE/GW yields a more accurate evolution of the excited state PES than TD-DFT when compared to the reference coupled cluster values. BSE/GW PES curves also show negligible exchange-correlation functional starting point dependency in sharp contrast with their TD-DFT counterparts.

Abstract
A series of OLED-relevant compounds, consisting of 1,3,5-triazine core linked to various aromatic arms by amino group, has been synthesized and characterized. The studied compounds exist in solution as a mixture of two conformers, a symmetric propeller and asymmetric conformer, in which one of the aromatic arms is rotated around the C-N bond. At temperatures below -40 °C, the VT NMR spectra in DMF-d7 are in a slow exchange regime, and the signals of two conformers can be elucidated. At temperatures above 100 °C, the VT NMR spectra in DMSO-d6 are in a fast exchange regime, and the averaged spectra can be measured. The ratio of symmetric and asymmetric conformers in DMF-d7 varies from 14:86 to 50:50 depending on the substituents. The rotational barriers of symmetric and asymmetric conformers in DMF-d7 were measured for all compounds and are in the interval from 11.7 to 14.7 kcal/mol. The ground-state energy landscapes of the studied compounds, obtained by DFT calculations, show good agreement with the experimental rotational barriers. The DFT calculations reveal that the observed chemical exchange occurs by the rotation around the C(1,3,5-triazine)-N bond. Although some of the compounds are potentially tautomeric, the measured absorption and emission spectra do not indicate proton transfer neither in the ground nor in the excited state.

Abstract
A series of three perylenemonoimide-p-oligophenylene-dimethylaniline molecular dyads undergo photoinduced charge separation (CS) with anomalous distance dependence as a function of increasing donor-acceptor (DA) distances. A comprehensive experimental and computational investigation of the photodynamics in the donor-bridge-acceptor (DBA) chromophores reveals a clear demarcation concerning the nature of the CS accessed at shorter (bridgeless) and longer DA distances. At the shortest distance, a strong DA interaction and ground-state charge delocalization populate a hot excited state (ES) with prominent charge transfer (CT) character, via Franck-Condon vertical excitation. The presence of such a CT-polarized hot ES enables a subpicosecond CS in the bridgeless dyad. The incorporation of the p-oligophenylene bridge effectively decouples the donor and the acceptor units in the ground state and consequentially suppresses the CT polarization in the hot ES. Theoretically, this should render a slower CS at longer distances. However, the transient absorption measurement reveals a fast CS process at the longer distance, contrary to the anticipated exponential distance dependence of the CS rates. A closer look into the excited-state dynamics suggests that the hot ES undergoes ultrafast geometry relaxation (τ < 1 ps) to create a relaxed ES. As compared to a decoupled, twisted geometry in the hot ES, the geometry of the relaxed ES exhibits a more planar conformation of the p-oligophenylene bridges. Planarization of the bridge endorses an increased charge delocalization and a prominent CT character in the relaxed ES and forms the origin for the evident fast CS at the longest distance. Thus, the relaxation of the hot ES and the concomitantly enhanced charge delocalization adds a new caveat to the classic nature of distance-dependent CS in artificial DBA chromophores and recommends a cautious treatment of the attenuation factor (β) while discussing anomalous CS trends.

Abstract

The photochemical reactions triggered by the sunlight
absorption
of transient volatile organic compounds in the troposphere are notoriously
difficult to characterize experimentally due to the unstable and short-lived
nature of these organic molecules. Some members of this family of
compounds are likely to exhibit a rich photochemistry given the diversity
of functional groups they can bear. Even more interesting is the photochemical
fate of volatile organic compounds bearing more than one functional
group that can absorb light—this is the case, for example,
of α-hydroperoxycarbonyls, which are formed during the oxidation
of isoprene. Experimental observables characterizing the photochemistry
of these molecules like photoabsorption cross-sections or photolysis
quantum yields are currently missing, and we propose here to leverage
a recently developed computational protocol to predict in silico the
photochemical fate of 2-hydroperoxypropanal (2-HPP) in the actinic
region. We combine different levels of electronic structure methods—SCS-ADC(2)
and XMS-CASPT2—with the nuclear ensemble approach and trajectory
surface hopping to understand the mechanistic details of the possible
nonradiative processes of 2-HPP. In particular, we predict the photoabsorption
cross-section and the wavelength-dependent quantum yields for the
observed photolytic pathways and combine them to determine in silico
photolysis rate constants. The limitations of our protocol and possible
future improvements are discussed.

Abstract
Theoretical computations have been performed on the absorption spectra of (8-R-TMB)2 dimers with varying character of substituents at the 8 position (meso) at monomers units (R = NH2, OH, CH3, H, COH, CF3, CN). The obtained results (TD-CAM-B3LYP) show that the first four lower transitions of studied dimers (S0 → Si, i = 1-4) are intrinsically linked with delocalized HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the two monomers, which constitute a dimer. For all the dimers, S0 → S1 and S0 → S3 transitions are strongly forbidden, whereas S0 → S2 and S0 → S4 are allowed. There is a good agreement between the TD-CAM-B3LYP theory and the simple model of exciton coupling for two identical chromophores with the planes of two moieties, which are stacked upon each other. Intensities of the allowed transitions depend strongly on the nature of the substituent at the meso position. For the dimers with monomer units bearing electron-donor groups, S0 → S2 transitions are more intense compared with S0 → S4 ones. As the donor properties of the meso substituents diminish and electron acceptor properties enlarge, the intensity of these transitions becomes lower, whereas that of S0 → S4 transitions becomes higher. For the dimers with NH2 and CN substituents, the almost inverse ratio of intensities of the transitions discussed is observed (for example, f = 0.80 and 0.06 (in the case of NH2) and f = 0.09 and 0.72 (CN) for S0 → S2 and S0 → S4, respectively). Protonation of the tertiary amine function drastically 'switches off' its electron-donating properties. As a result, the red shift of the bands and redistribution of intensities of the allowed S0 → S2 and S0 → S4 transitions is predicted for protonated forms of the (8-NH2-TMB)2 dimer. This peculiarity can be of especial importance for the design of dimers with a sensor function.

Abstract
Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-[2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolizin-9-yl)vinyl]-4H-pyran (LD688) in DMSO solution was investigated by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) with 403 nm excitation. The molecular structure of LD688 is similar to that of a well-known push-pull chromophore, 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), except that the internal rotation of the electron-donating dimethylamino group is restricted with the introduction of the julolidine moiety. Upon photo-excitation, LD688 shows an ultrafast (1.0 ps) ICT followed by the vibrational relaxation (3-8 ps) in the charge-transfer (CT) state. Two distinct Raman spectra of LD688 in the locally excited (LE) and CT state of the S1 state were retrieved from FSRS measurements. Based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) simulations, a "twisted" julolidine geometry of LD688 was proposed for the ICT state, which was further confirmed in comparison to the spectral changes of several push-pull chromophores with the π-conjugated backbone of stilbene, biphenyl, styrylpyran, styrylpyridinium, and styrene in terms of the skeletal vibrational modes of ν19b,py, νCC,ph, and νCN.

Abstract
Planar donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) organic molecules have been highlighted as promising photothermal agents due to their good light-to-heat conversion ratio, easy degradation, and chemical tunability. Very recently, it has been demonstrated that their photothermal conversion can be boosted by appending rather long alkyl chains. Despite this behavior being tentatively associated with the population of a nonradiative twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state driven by an intramolecular motion, the precise mechanisms and the role played by the environment, and most notably aggregation, still remain elusive. In this context, we carried out a series of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations combined with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to achieve a realistic description of the isolated and aggregated systems. Our theoretical models unambiguously evidence that the population of CT states is very unlikely in both cases, whereas the light-triggered heat dissipation can be ascribed to the activation of specific vibrational degrees of freedom related to the relative motion of the peripheral chains. Overall, our results clearly corroborate the active role played by the alkyl substituents in the photothermal conversion through vibrational motion, while breaking from the conventional picture, which invokes the formation of dark TICT states in loosely packed aggregates.

Abstract
We present an effective computational protocol (cLR2) to describe both solvatochromism and fluorosolvatochromism. This protocol, which couples the polarizable continuum model to time-dependent density functional theory, simultaneously accounts for both linear-response and state-specific solvation effects. A series of test cases, including solvatochromic and fluorosolvatochromic compounds and excited-state intramolecular proton transfers, are used to highlight that cLR2 is especially beneficial for modeling bright excitations possessing a significant charge-transfer character, as well as cases in which an accurate balance between states of various polarities should be restored.

Abstract
The time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) was used to obtain vibronic absorption spectra of acridine orange dye (AO) in an aqueous solution that were in good agreement with the experiment. The protonated and neutral forms of the dye have been investigated. The results of calculations using various functionals and basis sets have been analyzed. The best agreement with experiment was given by the level of theory X3LYP/6-31G(d,p). AO molecular orbitals involved in electronic transitions due light absorption in the visible region of the spectrum have been obtained. The dipole moments and atomic charges of the ground and excited states of the AO molecule have been calculated. Maps of the electrostatic potential have been drawn. An insignificant photoinduced electron transfer was found in the central ring of the chromophore of the dye molecule. According to our calculations, the vibronic coupling and the Boltzmann distribution play a significant role in the absorption spectra of the AO.

Abstract
Thioflavin T (ThT) is a viscosity-sensitive fluorescent dye and its emission intensity undergoes a significant enhancement upon binding to DNA or amyloid fibrils. This fluorescence light-up feature has been attributed earlier to restriction of structural rearrangements in the excited state that are coupled to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) reaction. In this work TDDFT (using B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP functionals) and SA-2-CASSCF calculations were carried out to obtain relaxed excited-state potential energy surfaces (PES) along twisting φ and wagging δ angles that describe mutual orientation of benzothiazole (BTZ) and dimethylaniline (DMA) fragments in ThT. For isolated ThT molecule both methods predict that during structural rearrangements of the initially excited Franck-Condon state, besides twisting along CC bond which connects BTZ and DMA fragments, a considerable wagging motion is expected to occur. Account for solvent effect using polarized continuum model showed qualitative differences in the excited state PES features calculated by SA-2-CASSCF and TDDFT methods. Single-reference TDDFT calculations failed to describe solvation of TICT state and predicted increase of its energy in more polar media.

Abstract
The twisted intramolecular charge transfer has been proposed for a number of years and widely accepted to explain the excited-state dynamics of organic molecules. Recently, a new state termed as "twisted and rehybridized intramolecular charge transfer" has been proposed to explain the excited-state dynamics of an aniline-triazine electron donor-acceptor dyad with an alkyne spacer based on ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopy. However, the change of the geometries along the excited-state decay pathway remains unknown. In this study, by optimization of the excited-state geometry of the donor-acceptor dyad and potential energy surface scan along the twisting angle, we successfully reproduce the experimentally observed band in time-resolved infrared absorption spectroscopy. Our calculation results demonstrated that the rehybridization process is not involved and only the twisted intramolecular charge transfer state is formed. Moreover, we located a minimum energy conical intersection between the ground and first excited-state of the donor-acceptor dyad, which is easily reached and corresponding to the primary nonradiative decay pathway of the donor-acceptor dyad. The energy of minimum energy conical intersection is solvent-dependent and consistent with the experimentally observed solvent-dependent lifetime of excited state.

Abstract
4-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is one of the earliest patented and most commonly used sunscreen components. There is however a long-lasting controversy on its photo-protective efficacy owing to the lack of information on its protolytic equilibrium and photo-dynamics after absorption of ultraviolet radiation in physiologically relevant aqueous solution. The excitation dynamics in water also remains largely unknown for analogs of PABA such as 4-dimethylaminoacetophenone (DMAAP) and 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DMABA) which are recognized as prototypes for photo-induced twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). Herein we report a combined application of femtosecond broadband time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption coupled with density functional theoretical study for PABA, DMAAP, and DMABA under several solvent conditions with representative properties in terms of the pH, polarity and hydrogen bonding capacity. The results we gained demonstrate that, in a neutral aqueous solution, PABA taking the deprotonated anion form in the ground state undergoes rapid protonation after excitation, producing excited state species in the neutral form that may shift effectively by intersystem crossing (ISC) to the long-lasting triplet state capable of damaging nucleic acids. This provides evidence at the molecular level for the detrimental effect of PABA if used as a sunscreen ingredient. In contrast, our investigation on DMAAP and DMABA unveils an unusual solvent controlled deactivation dynamics rendered by the participation of the carbonyl oxygen associated nOπ* state featuring energy and structure strongly responsive to solvent properties. In particular, these molecules in water exhibit solute-solvent hydrogen bonding at the sites of the carbonyl oxygen and the amino nitrogen which is, respectively, weakened and strengthened after the excitation, leading to state reversal and formation of a nOπ* state with a peculiar non-planar structure. This quenches strongly the excitation, eliminates the TICT, suppresses the ISC and opens up the otherwise inaccessible internal conversion (IC) to account for ∼80% of the entire deactivation. The IC, observed to proceed at a rate of ∼2.5 ps, allows the effective recovery of the ground state, providing substantial protection against ultraviolet irradiation. Moreover, the revelation of highly solvent sensitive fluorescence emission from DMABA and DMAAP implies the potential application of these molecules as the functional element in the design of sensory materials for probing the polarity and hydrogen bonding character of the surrounding environment.

Abstract
Inhibition of TICT can significantly increase the brightness of fluorescent materials. Accurate prediction of TICT is thus critical for the quantitative design of high-performance fluorophores and AIEgens. TICT of 14 types of popular organic fluorophores were modeled with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). A reliable and generalizable computational approach for modeling TICT formations was established. To demonstrate the prediction power of our approach, we quantitatively designed a boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based AIEgen which exhibits (almost) barrierless TICT rotations in monomers. Subsequent experiments validated our molecular design and showed that the aggregation of this compound turns on bright emissions with ca. 27-fold fluorescence enhancement, as TICT formation is inhibited in molecular aggregates.

Abstract
In short-time dynamics approximation, relative resonance Raman (RR) intensity of a vibrational mode primarily depends on the magnitude of square of the excited-state gradient along the corresponding normal coordinate, ground-state normal mode eigenvector, and harmonic vibrational wavenumbers. In this study, through simulation of RR spectra of guanosine-5'-monophosphate (GMP) in two ππ* singlet excited states, we analyze how the explicitly hydrogen-bonded local solvation structure of the chromophore dictates intensities of the RR active modes in an unprecedented manner. We show that the accuracy of the structural model of solvated chromophore plays a decisive role in determining an optimal theoretical method for prediction of the Franck-Condon region of the ππ* excited states. 9-Methylguanine (9-meG) in complex with six water molecules (9-meG·6H2O) is found out to be the most accurate one for describing GMP in two different bright electronic states. We find that explicit hydrogen-bonded water molecules strongly influence computed RR intensities of GMP by modulating both the ground-state normal mode vectors and the excited-state energy gradients. We find that simultaneous inclusion of six explicit waters to describe the solute-solvent interaction near all hydration sites is essential for reliable prediction of the features of RR spectra in Lb and Bb electronic states of GMP.

Abstract
We present a new concept to control the conformations of molecules in the excited state through harvesting negative hyperconjugation. The strategy was realized with the 2,3,1,4-benzodiazadiborinane scaffold, which was prepared by a new synthetic procedure. Photochemical studies identified dual light emission, which was assigned to well-defined conformers. The emission at longer wavelength can be switched off by restricting the rotational degrees of freedom in the solid state as well as by controlling the energy levels of the excited states through adjusting the solvent polarity.

Abstract
Quantum dots (QD) belong to a class of materials considered technologically important for their tunable absorption and emission properties and a huge application potential in optoelectronic technologies. To date, only simplified monolayer models of QDs and their dimers have been considered when modeling their absorption and/or emission spectra and effects of edge functionalization. Here, we analyze the optical properties of new type electron donor-acceptor bilayer quantum dot models based on coronene and its boron-nitride analogues (electron donors) with a 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene dye (Bdp, an electron acceptor) dye by using time-dependent density functional theory. To understand the nature of transition shifts in electronic spectra, we use BN models with strong modification of the HOMO and LUMO: m-BNC (middle hexagonal ring CC bonds are substituted by BN), p-BNC (all peripheral CC bonds are substituted by BN), and f-BNC (all C atoms are replaced by B and N in an alternate manner). Adiabatic ionization potentials of all coronenes were also calculated. The obtained results show that significant interlayer charge transfer (CT) on excitation of bilayer QDs in S1, S2, and S3 states from strong electron donors, coronene (6.93 eV) and m-BNC (6.52 eV), to Bdp will occur. As a result, one can observe only very weak absorption of CT-character in the low-energy spectrum region as well as strong fluorescence quenching of Bdp. On the contrary, for the weak electron donors, p-BNC (7.22 eV) and f-BNC (8.22 eV), strong Bdp-like absorption and fluorescence bands of local excitation character in the low-energy region are expected. Correlation of optical properties of bilayer QDs with ionization potentials of coronene monolayers has been founded. The obtained results can be useful for future graphene-based optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
Increased interest has been devoted to the discovery of multifunctional materials with desirable properties, as continuous performance enhancement of various devices mainly depends on high-performance materials. Now, density functional theory has become a powerful tool to design new materials and rationalize experimental observations. In this work, we explored the photophysical properties origin of chiral boron heptaaryldipyrromethene (heptaaryl-BODIPY), which has charming optoelectronic properties. At the same time, we designed the other five compounds on the basis of heptaaryl-BODIPY. The simulated electronic absorption and emission spectra of heptaaryl-BODIPY are in agreement with experimental ones, allowing us to reliably assign its electronic transition property. The designed compound 6 shows remarkably large first hyperpolarizability value up to 82.78×10-30 esu. For this kind of compounds, their NLO response values associate with not only position but also electronic nature of substituent groups. Moreover, electron reorganization energies of compounds 1-4 are comparable to tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminium(III) which is a typical electron transport material. Intriguingly, the studied compounds are the excellent fluorescent probe materials from the standpoint of large Stokes shift and high emission efficiency. Our work enables an opportunity for understanding the relationship between microelectronic structure and macroscopic performance of BODIPY derivatives.

Abstract
Exciton formation leads to J-bands in solid pentacene. Describing these exciton bands represents a challenge for both time-dependent (TD) density-functional theory (DFT) and for its semi-empirical analog, namely, for TD density-functional tight binding (DFTB) for three reasons: (i) solid pentacene and pentacene aggregates are bound only by van der Waals forces which are notoriously difficult to describe with DFT and DFTB, (ii) the proper description of the long-range coupling between molecules, needed to describe Davydov splitting, is not easy to include in TD-DFT with traditional functionals and in TD-DFTB, and (iii) mixing may occur between local and charge transfer excitons, which may, in turn, require special functionals. We assess how far TD-DFTB has progressed toward a correct description of this type of exciton by including both a dispersion correction for the ground state and a range-separated hybrid functional for the excited state and comparing the results against corresponding TD-CAM-B3LYP/CAM-B3LYP+D3 results. Analytic results for parallel-stacked ethylene are derived which go beyond Kasha's exciton model [M. Kasha, H. R. Rawls, and A. El-Bayoumi, Pure Appl. Chem. 11, 371 (1965)] in that we are able to make a clear distinction between charge transfer and energy transfer excitons. This is further confirmed when it is shown that range-separated hybrids have a markedly greater effect on charge-transfer excitons than on energy-transfer excitons in the case of parallel-stacked pentacenes. TD-DFT calculations with the CAM-B3LYP functional and TD-lc-DFT calculations lead to negligible excitonic corrections for the herringbone crystal structure, possibly because of an overcorrection of charge-transfer effects (CAM refers to Coulomb attenuated method). In this case, TD-DFT calculations with the B3LYP functional or TD-DFTB calculations parameterized to B3LYP give the best results for excitonic corrections for the herringbone crystal structure as judged from comparison with experimental spectra and with Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations from the literature.
