The effects on chicks of dietary fibre from different sources: a growth factor in wheat bran

Effects of concentration of corn distillers dried grains with solubles and enzyme supplementation on cecal microbiota and performance in broiler chickens

With the increasing production of ethanol for biofuels, a by-product of corn-based ethanol fermentation, dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) is finding its way into the feed of agricultural animals including cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep, goats, aquaculture species and horses. Corn DDGS contains very high levels of non-starch polysaccharides and could be considered a good source of fibre. Despite knowledge of the role of the fibre in modulating intestinal microbiota and consequently influencing health, there is currently little information on the interactions between DDGS and intestinal microbiota. We assessed the changes in the cecal microbiota of broilers feed rations supplemented with DDGS (five concentrations: 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24% w/w) with and without presence of digestive enzymes. DDGS concentration was strongly positively correlated (P = 3.7e^-17, r = 0.74) with feed conversion efficiency (FCR), diminishing broiler performance with higher concentrations. Additionally, DDGS concentrations positively correlated with Richness index (P = 1.5e^-3, r = 0.5), increasing the number of detectable species in the cecum. Among the most affected genera, Faecalibacterium (P = 0.032, r = -0.34) and Streptococcus (P = 7.9e^-3, r = -0.39) were negatively correlated with DDGS, while Turicibacter (P = 2.8e^-4, r = 0.52) was positively correlated with the DDGS concentration. Enzymes showed minimal effect on cecal microbiota.

Effects of a fiber-rich diet on physiology and survival of farm-reared red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa)

The sudden shift from a commercial energy-rich, fiber-poor diet to natural food is assumed as one of the causes of the low success of gamebird restocking. We fed farmed red-legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) chicks with a diet rich in fiber from their first month of life to the time of their release to assess the possible effects on morphometric characteristics and plasma biochemistry and whether those effects enhance survival after release into the wild. At the time of release, treated partridges showed heavier gizzards and bursas of Fabricius and longer small intestines than control birds fed commercial feed. Treated birds had also smaller pectoral muscles, lighter spleens and lower plasma levels of proteins, glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. After release and radiotracking in a hunting area, we found no differences in the survival between both groups. Survival at the end of the study (day 39) was 58.3+/-14.2% for the control group and 24.2+/-13.8% for the treated group. The fiber-rich diet seems to have important effects on the physiology of the red-legged partridge, not always taken into account in previous studies.

Marked differences in the splanchnometry of farm-bred and wild red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa L.)

Relative weights of heart, spleen, pancreas, and liver and the relative lengths of the small intestine and the cecum were taken from 40 farm-bred and 43 wild juvenile red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa Linnaeus) in central Spain. Expressed as a ratio to head and body length, farm-bred partridges had lighter hearts (17% lighter), spleens (78%), and livers (29%) and shorter small intestines (15%) and cecae (20%), than wild birds of the same age. When expressed as a ratio to body weight, farm-bred juvenile red-legged partridges had lighter hearts (12%) and livers (23%) and shorter small intestines (9%) and cecae (12%) than wild partridges. Those differences might have been produced by diet differences (such as fiber-poor, high-energy feeds used on farms) and may affect the survival of farm-bred partridges after release.

Effects of increasing the fibre content of a layer diet

The fibre content of a basal diet fed to laying hens was increased from 149.2 g to between 218.6 and 292.3 g/kg by the inclusion of various fibrous farm wastes and by-products at 200 g/kg diet. The fibrous ingredients lowered the metabolisable energy (ME) of the basal diet from 11.82 to between 9.31 and 11.21 MJ/kg. Utilisation (g food/kg egg) of the basal diet was not significantly different from values for diets containing maize cob, cassava or maize starch residues. The diet containing maize cob supported a performance similar to that of the basal diet, despite a lower energy content (10.08 MJ/kg). Diets containing cowpea shell, cassava peel or sawdust, with lower energy contents, and those containing maize starch residue, palm kernel meal or dried brewers grains, with higher energy contents, were not as good. The diet containing cassava starch residue supported similar egg production to the basal but egg size was less. Inclusion of some of the fibre sources caused slight decreases in yolk cholesterol, although this could not be correlated with dietary fibre content. Additional dietary fibre caused slight increases in gizzard weight but this was also not simply related to dietary fibre content.

Effect of fiber and phytate source and of calcium and phosphorus level on phytate hydrolysis in the chick

Broiler chicks were fed a corn-soybean meal diet or a corn-soybean meal diet containing either 15% rice bran, 15% wheat bran, 15% alfalfa meal, 10% cellulose, or 10% cottonseed hulls. All diets contained 3190 kcal/kg of metabolizable energy, 22.8% protein, and either 1.0% calcium and .5% nonphytate phosphorus (Pnp) or .85% calcium and .42% Pnp. The diets were fed for 3 weeks at which time a digestion trial was conducted to determine the amount of phytate hydrolyzed. Chicks consuming diets containing the lower levels of calcium and Pnp hydrolyzed more phytate than those fed the higher levels of calcium and Pnp except when the diet contained rice bran. Less phytate was hydrolyzed in the rice bran diet at the lower calcium and Pnp levels. Phytate hydrolysis was not affected by wheat bran but was reduced by cottonseed hulls. At the lower levels of calcium and Pnp, alfalfa meal and cellulose significantly increased phytate hydrolysis by chicks. The hydrolysis of phytate was influenced more by calcium and by source than by fiber or by level of phytate fed.

The influence of fibre content and physical texture of the diet on the performance of broilers in the tropics

Performance from 1 to 56 d and some aspects of gut morphology were examined in broilers fed on five nutritionally similar diets in mash or pellet form varying in acid-detergent fibre content from 50 to 100 g/kg. Dietary fibre and physical form did not significantly affect food consumption. Growth and food utilisation improved with pelleting and decreased with increasing fibre content. The interaction between fibre and physical form was also significant. At similar food intakes, high fibre contents increased relative length and weight of the intestine and caeca. Gizzards were heavier in broilers fed on four of the five mash diets.

Effect of dietary fiber sources on tissue mineral levels in chicks

Dietary fiber may influence mineral status of chicks. Wheat bran, corn bran, soy bran, oat hulls, rice bran, and cellulose, were formulated into diets and fed to chicks for 4 weeks. Fiber-added diets contained additional 6% dietary fiber from the fiber sources. Body weights and feed intakes were recorded. Livers and tibias were analyzed for copper, zinc, iron, manganese, and magnesium. The rice bran diet resulted in significantly lowered body weights, feed intakes, and tibia concentrations of zinc, iron, and manganese. The other fiber-added diets did not produce significantly different values for the parameters examined. Dietary analyses showed that the rice bran diet did not have extremely high fiber levels as compared to the other diets. Addition of rice bran contributed the highest amount of phytic acid of all the fiber sources at 1.3% of the diet. It was concluded that when included at 6% of the diet, most fibers did not influence growth or tissue mineral levels. However, the addition of rice bran to the diet reduced body growth and deposition of zinc, iron, and manganese in tibias. It is possible that one fiber source may be beneficial while another is detrimental to nutritional status.
