Gender Differences in Pattern Reversal Evoked Potential Amplitude: Influence of Check Size and Single Trial Response Variability

Insomnia attenuates response inhibition: Evidence from Go/NoGo research

OBJECTIVE

Varied cognitive dysfunctions including memory, attention, inputs, processing and filtration have been found in insomnia. Meanwhile, evidence from functional neuroimaging have revealed that the abnormal metabolism in prefrontal cortex was associated with probable deficit of executive function. And in our study, we have detected the response inhibition in insomnia patients by Go/NoGo,an Event-related potentials (ERPs) study, in order to explore the impaired executive function, because response inhibition is a hallmark of executive function.

METHODS

We used polysomnography (PSG) to record such objective PSG parameters. Go/NoGo was performed in sequence, different ERP components have been analyzed such as latency or amplitude between insomnia group and control group. And we used Person correlation coefficient R to make analysis between different ERP components and gender, duration, education, BMI and sleep characteristics.

RESULTS

On the behavioral level, we found a little poor performance insomnia participants. On the electrophysiological level, under Go condition, insomnia participants have prolonged latency and smaller amplitude of N2 or P3. While, under NoGo condition, insomnia participants also have longer latency, but higher amplitude of N2 or P3. another major finding was that different correlation was found between gender,anxiety-depression,duration, education,BMI,sleep characteristics and N2 or P3.

DISCUSSION

Our study has revealed that sleep loss may influence the response inhibition ability in insomnia, not only on behavior level, but also on the electrophysiological level. Abnormal changes in inhibition process or inhibition supervision can be represented as N2/P3 components under Go/No-go condition. Additionally, correlation analysis has been found between gender, anxiety-depression, BMI, education, and sleep structure. Thus, sleep loss attenuates response inhibition and impairs executive function in insomnia participants.

The Application of ASSRs, P50, and MMN in the Exploration of Cognitive Dysfunction Involving Inputs and Processing in Insomnia Patients

Objective cognitive dysfunction has been commonly found in patients with insomnia, such as attention, memory, speed of information processing, and executive functions. Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), P50, mismatch negativity (MMN) can meet varied need and estimate such different cognitive dysfunction. Thus, we can examine whether insomnia is associated with different cognitive dysfunction by such multiple event-related potential (ERP) tasks. Methods we used polysomnography (PSG) to record such objective PSG parameters. ASSR, P50, and MMN were performed in sequence, different ERP components have been analyzed such as latency or amplitude between insomnia group and control group. And we chosed person correlation to make correlation analysis between different ERP components and gender, education, and sleep characteristics. Results there is a significant gender difference of ASSR latency found in insomnia group, and the similar result has been found in suppression ratio of amplitudes (S2:S1) for P50. Additionally, a significant correlation between sleep characteristics and ASSR, P50 has been found. Furthermore, there was a significant difference of MMN latency between insomnia and control group, and between sleep characteristics and varied MMN parameters as latency and amplitude. Discussion our results suggested robust electrophysiological abnormalities as ASSR, P50, and MMN in insomnia patients. Such abnormalities included gender difference, education difference, difference in depressive tendency, and difference in sleep parameters. That results revealed varied cognitive dysfunction involving inputs and processing in insomnia patients. And at the same time, we have also explored the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying the cognitive dysfunction with such different ERP tasks.

A life span study of exploratory eye movements in healthy subjects: gender differences and affective influences

To evaluate age and gender differences as well as effects of affection, we examined exploratory eye movements. Exploratory eye movements were recorded in healthy subjects (57 women and 57 men) ranging from 9 to 74 years. All subjects were divided into three groups as pre puberty, young, and older adults to study the influences of age and gonadal hormones. Exploratory eye movements were analyzed for total eye scanning length (TESL), and total numbers of gaze points (TNGP) as subjects viewed neutral or affectively charged pictures. TESL and TNGP in older adults were significantly larger than that in both pre puberty and young adults for crying babies. TESL and TNGP in pre puberty were significantly smaller than that in both young and older adults for circles. TESL and TNGP in pre puberty were significantly smaller than that in older adults for smiling babies. Pre puberty and young adult of both genders for crying babies showed significantly shorter TESL than for when smiling babies. When viewing circles, young adult women had shorter TESL than men. TNGP in young adult women was smaller than in men for circles or crying babies. TNGP of young adult women in the visual right field was significantly smaller than in men. TNGP for crying babies was significantly smaller than that for smiling babies in young adults of both genders for the left field. Exploratory eye movements thus are a useful marker of visual cognitive function. Gender differences were limited to younger adults, suggesting influences of gonadal hormones.

The Relationship of Physical Activity History to Pattern-Reversal Evoked-Potential Components in Young and Older Men and Women

Latencies and peak-to-peak amplitudes of pattern-reversal evoked-potential (PREP) components of active and inactive community-dwelling healthy 61- to 77-year-olds were compared with those of active and inactive 18- to 31-year-olds to determine whether long-term physical activity involvement was associated with attenuation of age-related changes in sensory processes. Binocular PREPs were derived for each of 2 check sizes (22 × 15 ft and 41 × 30 ft of visual angle) to provide increasing challenge of spatial resolution. Analyses of the latencies revealed significant effects for age, gender, and check size such that latencies were longer for older than for young participants, men than for women, and small than for larger check sizes. Amplitudes were larger in older adults for the P100-N150 peak-to-peak difference, but physical activity history was not associated with reduction of the observed age-related increases in component latencies and amplitude. As such, physical activity does not appear to attenuate age-related decline in visual sensory processing.

Gender differences and reproducibility in exploratory eye movements of normal subjects

Exploratory eye movements were recorded using an eye-mark recorder in 48 normal subjects (24 male and 24 female). Gender differences were examined regarding four eye movement parameters such as the mean gazing time, the total number of gazing points, and the mean eye scanning length and the total eye scanning length. The mean gazing time of women was significantly longer than that of men, and the total number of gazing points of women was significantly less than that of men. The mean eye-scanning length of men and women did not differ. The total eye scanning length of men was significantly longer than that of women. Reproducibility between sessions of the four eye movement parameters above was expressed as Pearson correlation coefficients (r) in 24 healthy adults before and after a month interval, yielding respective coefficients of 0.65, 0.42, 0.56 and 0.61. These results suggested that differences in exploratory eye movements between men and women may reflect differences in the characteristics of visual information processing and also confirmed the reproducibility of exploratory eye movement parameters.

Gender differences in gating of the auditory evoked potential in normal subjects

Central nervous system (CNS) inhibitory mechanisms hypothesized to "gate" repetitive sensory inputs have been implicated in the pathology of schizophrenia. The present study investigated gender differences in inhibitory gating of evoked brain responses to repeated stimuli in normal subjects (30 women and 30 men) using an auditory conditioning-testing paradigm. Pairs of click stimuli (S1 and S2) were presented with a 0.5 s intrapair and a 10 s interpair interval. The amplitudes and latencies of the P50, N100, P180 components of the auditory evoked response to the conditioning (S1) and test response (S2) were measured, and the gating ratios were computed (T/C ratio = S2/S1 * 100). The amplitudes to S1 were not significantly different between men and women at P50, N100, or P180. However, women had significantly higher amplitudes to S2 at P50 (p = 0.03) and N100 (p = 0.04). The T/C ratios for women were higher (i.e., less suppression of response to S2) for P50 (p = 0.08) and N100 (p = 0.04) compared to men. The results suggested that differences in auditory gating between men and women were not due to biological differences in the P50 and N100 generators but possibly to differential influence of inhibitory mechanisms acting on the generator substrates of these evoked responses.

Pattern reversal evoked potentials: gender differences and age-related changes in amplitude and latency

This report is intended to complement the current body of literature by describing pattern reversal evoked potential (PREP) component amplitudes and latencies in a larger sample than has been previously studied and providing comparisons of males and females across the lifespan. Binocular PREPs were measured from 406 normal subjects, 6-80 years of age. In general, latencies were found to decrease during maturation, stabilize across early adulthood, then begin to increase sometime after the late 20s. There were minimal gender differences in latencies during development but males tended to have longer latencies than females during adulthood. Across the lifespan, amplitudes were larger for females. Results of regression analyses using the entire data set were compared to results of separate regression analyses for developmental years (6-20) and adulthood (21-80). Separate analyses appear to provide more useful descriptions of PREP latency and amplitude changes across the lifespan. It is clear that predicted normal values can vary depending on age range and relative proportion of males and females comprising a reference sample. Appropriate clinical values should be based on age- and sex-matched normal subjects and should be specific with regard to technical and methodological variables.
