Abstract
Capturing human locomotion in nearly any environment or context is becoming increasingly feasible with wearable sensors, giving access to commonly encountered walking conditions. While important in expanding our understanding of locomotor biomechanics, these more variable environments present challenges to identify changes in data due to person-level factors among the varying environment-level factors. Our study examined foot-specific biomechanics while walking on terrain commonly encountered with the goal of understanding the extent to which these variables change due to terrain. We recruited healthy adults to walk at self-selected speeds on stairs, flat ground, and both shallow and steep sloped terrain. A pair of inertial measurement units were embedded in both shoes to capture foot biomechanics while walking. Foot orientation was calculated using a strapdown procedure and foot trajectory was determined by double integrating the linear acceleration. Stance time, swing time, cadence, sagittal and frontal orientations, stride length and width were extracted as discrete variables. These data were compared within-participant and across terrain conditions. The physical constraints of the stairs resulted in shorter stride lengths, less time spent in swing, toe-first foot contact, and higher variability during stair ascent specifically (p<0.05). Stride lengths increased when ascending compared to descending slopes, and the sagittal foot angle at initial contact was greatest in the steep slope descent condition (p<0.05). No differences were found between conditions for horizontal foot angle in midstance (p≥0.067). Our results show that walking on slopes creates differential changes in foot biomechanics depending on whether one is descending or ascending, and stairs require different biomechanics and gait timing than slopes or flat ground. This may be an important factor to consider when making comparisons of real-world walking bouts, as greater proportions of one terrain feature in a data set could create bias in the outcomes. Classifying terrain in unsupervised walking datasets would be helpful to avoid comparing metrics from different walking terrain scenarios.

Abstract
Intersegmental coordination (ISC) of lower limbs and planar covariation law (PCL) are important phenomena observed in biomechanics of human walking and other activities. Gait perturbations tend to cause deviation from the expected ISC pattern thus violating PCL. We used a data set of seven subjects, who experienced unexpected slips, to investigate and characterize the evolution of ISC during slip recoveries and falls. We have analyzed and presented the development of ISC patterns, encompassing the step preceding the slip initiation and duration of slip until it stops. The results show that the ISC patterns during slip recovery deviate considerably from the normal walking patterns. A newly proposed Euclidian distance-based metric (EDM) was used to quantify the deviation from the normal walking ISC pattern during four slip recoveries and three falls evaluated at gait events such as slip start, foot strike, and peak height of the swing foot. The timing of gait events after slip, pattern of EDM, placement of the feet after slip and temporal patterns of each limb angle have been presented. This initial investigation provides insight into the ISC during slip recovery which highlights the human natural recovery trajectories during such perturbations. The observed patterns of the ISC trajectories during slip can be used for the design of human-inspired controllers for exoskeleton devices that can provide external assistance to human subjects during balance recovery.

Abstract
While much attention has been paid to understanding slip-related falls in humans, little has been focused on curvilinear paths despite their prevalence, distinct biomechanical demands and increased slipping threat. We determined the mechanics, compensatory stepping reactions and fall risk associated with slips during fixed-speed walking across ranges of path curvature, slipped foot and slip onset phase contexts possible in the community, which builds upon previous work by examining speed-independent effects of curvilinear walking. Twenty-one participants experienced 15 unconstrained slips induced by a wearable friction-reducing device as motion capture and harness load cell data were recorded. Falls were most likely after early stance slips to the inside foot and increased at tighter curvatures. Slip distance and peak velocity decreased as slips began later in stance phase, did not differ between feet, and accelerated on tighter paths. Slipping foot directions relative to heading transitioned from anterior (forward) to posterior (backward) as slips began later in stance, were ipsilateral (toward the slipping foot side) and contralateral (toward the opposite side) for the outside and inside foot, respectively, and became increasingly ipsilateral/contralateral on tighter curvatures. Compensatory steps were placed anteriorly and ipsilaterally after outside and inside foot slips, respectively, and lengthened at later onset phases for outside foot slips only. Our findings illustrate slip magnitude and fall risk relationships that suggest slip direction may influence the balance threat posed by a slip, imply that walking speed may modify slip likelihood, and indicate the most destabilizing curved walking contexts to target in future perturbation-based balance training approaches.

Abstract
Although humans are well-adapted to negotiating sloped terrain, balance recovery after a disturbance on slopes is poorly understood. This study investigated how slope affects recovery from unanticipated simulated trips and slips. Eighteen healthy young adults walked on a split-belt treadmill at 1.25 m/s and three slope angles (downhill: - 8°; level: 0°; uphill: + 8°), with slip- and trip-like perturbations applied randomly at heel-strike. We evaluated balance recovery using whole-body angular momentum (WBAM) and perturbation response (PR), for which larger PR values indicate greater deviation of the margin of stability from baseline, therefore, greater destabilisation after perturbation. Overall, trips were more destabilising than slips, producing larger PR and greater range and integral of WBAM across all tested slopes, most significantly in the sagittal plane. Contrary to expectation, sagittal-plane PR post-trip was greatest for level walking and smallest for downhill walking. Heightened vigilance during downhill walking may explain this finding. Recovery strategy in both frontal and sagittal planes was consistent across all slopes and perturbation types, characterized by a wider and shorter first recovery step, with trips requiring the greatest step adjustment. Our findings advance understanding of the robustness of human locomotion and may offer insights into fall prevention interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Falls on icy surfaces are the leading cause of injuries for outdoor workers. Footwear outsole material and geometrical design parameters are the most significant factors affecting slips-and-falls. Recently, composite materials have been incorporated into outsoles to improve traction, yet the best design parameters are not fully understood. METHOD In this effort, based on Taguchi orthogonal array design, 27 outsole prototypes were fabricated with different tread pattern features using our patented composites and tested in a simulated winter condition. RESULTS An analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that surface area (p = 0.041, Contribution = 15.63%) was the only factor significantly affecting the slip-resistance of our prototypes. The best performance was observed for the maximized surface area covered by our composite material with circular and half circular plugs laid obliquely, mostly in the forefoot area. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS These findings suggest that some tread design features of composite-based footwear have a great role in affecting slip-resistance properties of composite-based footwear.

Abstract
Spring-based passive ankle exoskeletons have been designed to emulate the energy conservation and power amplification roles of biological muscle-tendon units during locomotion. Yet, it remains unknown if similar assistive devices can serve the other elastomechanical role of biological muscle-tendon units - power attenuation. Here we explored the effect of bilateral passive ankle exoskeletons on neuromuscular control and muscle fascicle dynamics in the ankle plantarflexors during rapid, unexpected vertical perturbations. We recorded muscle activation and soleus fascicle length changes during hopping with and without exoskeleton assistance (0 and 76 Nm rad-1) on elevated platforms (20 cm), which were removed at an unknown time. Our results demonstrate that exoskeleton assistance leads to a reduction in soleus muscle activation, increases in fascicle length change and decreases in muscle forces during perturbed hopping. These changes have competing effects on the mechanics and energetics of lower limb muscles, likely limiting the capacity for series elastic tissues to absorb energy. As we strive towards the design of wearable assistive devices for everyday locomotion, information regarding real-time muscle-tendon behavior may enable tunable assistance that adapts to both the user and the environment.

Abstract
Frequently, biomedical researchers need to choose between multiple candidate statistical models. Several techniques exist to facilitate statistical model selection including adjusted R2, hypothesis testing and p-values, and information criteria among others. One particularly useful approach that has been slow to permeate the biomedical literature is the notion of posterior model probabilities. A major advantage of posterior model probabilities is that they quantify uncertainty in model selection by providing a direct, probabilistic comparison among competing models as to which is the "true" model that generated the observed data. Additionally, posterior model probabilities can be used to compute posterior inclusion probabilities which quantify the probability that individual predictors in a model are associated with the outcome in the context of all models considered given the observed data. Posterior model probabilities are typically derived from Bayesian statistical approaches which require specialized training to implement, but in this paper we describe an easy-to-compute version of posterior model probabilities and inclusion probabilities that rely on the readily-available Bayesian information criterion. We illustrate the utility of posterior model probabilities and inclusion probabilities by re-analyzing data from a published gait study investigating factors that predict required coefficient of friction between the shoe sole and floor while walking.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the gait stability response during incline and decline walking for various surface inclination angles in terms of the required coefficient of friction (RCOF), postural stability index (PSI), and center of pressure (COP)-center of mass (COM) distance. A customized platform with different surface inclinations (0°, 5°, 7.5°, and 10°) was designed. Twenty-three male volunteers participated by walking on an inclined platform for each inclination. The process was then repeated for declined platform as well. Qualysis motion capture system was used to capture and collect the trajectories motion of ten reflective markers that attached to the subjects before being exported to a visual three-dimensional (3D) software and executed in Matlab to obtain the RCOF, PSI, as well as dynamic PSI (DPSI) and COP-COM distance parameters. According to the result for incline walking, during initial contact, the RCOF was not affected to inclination. However, it was affected during peak ground reaction force (GRF) starting at 7.5° towards 10° for both walking conditions. The most affected PSI was found at anterior-posterior PSI (APSI) even as low as 5° inclination during both incline and decline walking. On the other hand, DPSI was not affected during both walking conditions. Furthermore, COP-COM distance was most affected during decline walking in anterior-posterior direction. The findings of this research indicate that in order to decrease the risk of falling and manage the inclination demand, a suitable walking strategy and improved safety measures should be applied during slope walking, particularly for decline and anterior-posterior orientations. This study also provides additional understanding on the best incline walking technique for secure and practical incline locomotion.

Abstract
Accidental falls often result from loss of balance initiated by slips. People may adopt different balance recovery patterns after slips which could affect recovery outcomes. The present study aimed to identify balance recovery patterns after slips and to determine whether these balance recovery patterns could be associated with different levels of slip-induced fall likelihood. Sixty young (age 24.2 ± 2.1 years) participants were involved in an experimental study. They were instructed to walk on a linear walkway, where unexpected slips were induced when stepping onto a removable vinyl tile sheet covered with water-detergent mixture. One hundred and fifty slip trials were obtained, including 85 successful balance recovery trials and 65 failed balance recovery trials (i.e., fall trials). Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to classify balance recovery patterns based on the kinematic measures of both feet over the period from 100 to 300 ms after heel contact of the slipping foot. Three balance recovery patterns were identified, and these balance recovery patterns were found to be associated with different levels of slip-induced fall likelihood. Findings from the present study can contribute to better understanding of balance recovery mechanisms associated with slips, and guide developing and evaluating fall prevention interventions.

Severity of Unconstrained Simultaneous Bilateral Slips: The Impact of Frontal Plane Feet Velocities Relative to the Center of Mass to Classify Slip-Related Falls and Recoveries. Abstract
Targeted interventions to prevent slip-related falls may be informed by specific kinematic factors measured during the reactive response that accurately discriminate recoveries from falls. But reactive responses to diverse slipping conditions during unconstrained simultaneous bilateral slips, which are closely related to real-world slips, are currently unknown. It is challenging to identify these critical kinematic factors due to the wide variety of upper and lower body postural deviations that occur following the slip, which affect stability in both the sagittal and frontal planes. To explore the utility of kinematic measurements from each vertical plane to discriminate slip-related falls from recoveries, we compared the accuracy of four Linear Discriminant Analysis models informed by predetermined sagittal or frontal plane measurements from the lower body (feet velocities relative to the center of mass) or upper body (angular momentum of trunk and arms) during reactive responses after slip initiation. Unconstrained bilateral slips during over-ground walking were repeatedly administered using a wearable device to 10 younger (24.7 ± 3.2 years) and 10 older (72.4 ± 3.9 years) adults while whole-body kinematics were measured using motion capture. Falls (n = 20) and recoveries (n = 40) were classified by thresholding the dynamic tension forces measured in an overhead harness support system and verified through video observation. Frontal plane measurements of the peak feet velocities relative to the center of mass provided the best classification (classification accuracy = 73.3%), followed by sagittal plane measurements (classification accuracy = 68.3%). Measurements from the lower body resulted in higher accuracy models than those from the upper body, but the accuracy of all models was generally low compared to the null accuracy of 66.7% (i.e., predicting all trials as recoveries). Future work should investigate novel models that include potential interactions between kinematic factors. The performance of lower limb kinematics in the frontal plane in classifying slip-related falls demonstrates the importance of administering unconstrained slips and measuring kinematics outside the sagittal plane.

Abstract
Slip-resistant footwear can prevent fall-related injuries on icy surfaces. Winter footwear slip resistance can be measured by the Maximum Achievable Angle (MAA) test, which measures the steepest ice-covered incline that participants can walk up and down without experiencing a slip. However, the MAA test requires the use of a human observer to detect slips, which increases the variability of the test. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an automated slip detection algorithm for walking on level and inclined ice surfaces to be used with the MAA test to replace the need for human observers. Kinematic data were collected from nine healthy young adults walking up and down on ice surfaces in a range from 0° to 12° using an optical motion capture system. Our algorithm segmented these data into steps and extracted features as inputs to two linear support vector machine classifiers. The two classifiers were trained, optimized, and validated to classify toe slips and heel slips, respectively. A total of approximately 11,000 steps from 9 healthy participants were collected, which included approximately 4700 slips. Our algorithm was able to detect slips with an overall F1 score of 90.1%. In addition, the algorithm was able to accurately classify backward toe slips, forward toe slips, backward heel slips, and forward heel slips with F1 scores of 97.3%, 54.5%, 80.9%, and 86.5%, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Task-specific training with single-session overground slip simulation has shown to reduce real-life falls in older adults. AIMS The purpose of this study was to determine if fall-resisting behavior acquired from a single-session treadmill-based gait slip training could be retained to reduce older adults' falls in everyday living over a 6-month follow-up period. METHODS 143 community-dwelling older adults (≥ 65 years old) were randomly assigned to either the treadmill-based gait slip training group (N = 73), in which participants were exposed to 40 unpredictable treadmill slips, or the control group (N = 70), in which participants walked on a treadmill at their comfortable speed. Participants reported their falls from the preceding year (through self-report history) and over the following 6 months (through fall diaries and monitored with phone calls). RESULTS There was no main effect of time (retrospective vs. prospective fall) and training (treadmill training vs. control) on fall reduction (p > 0.05 for both). The survival distributions of event of all-cause falls or slip falls were comparable between groups (p > 0.05 for both). DISCUSSION Unlike overground slip training where a single training session could significantly reduce everyday falls in a 6-month follow-up period, the results indicated that one treadmill-based gait slip training session by itself was unable to produce similar effects. CONCLUSION Further modification of the training protocol by increasing training dosage (e.g., number of sessions or perturbation intensity) may be necessary to enhance transfer to daily living. Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine reactive balance responses to a trip and slip during gait in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS This cross-sectional laboratory study involved 29 participants with MS (50.6 ± 13.4 years) and 29 gender-and-aged-matched healthy controls (50.9 ± 19.2 years). Falls following an induced trip and slip along a 10 m walkway, approach (e.g. gait speed, step length, foot contact angle) and recovery strategies (e.g. response time, extrapolated centre of mass position, margin of stability) were compared between the two groups. FINDINGS The rate of falls was significantly higher in the participants with MS relative to healthy controls (rate ratio=2.82, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.42, 5.61). Participants with MS also experienced more trip falls (odds ratio [OR]=3.90, 95% CI=1.16, 13.08) and more slip falls (OR=6.27, 95% CI=1.95, 20.22) than the heathy controls. Participants with MS had significantly slower gait speed, step length, cadence, and foot contact angle during approach (P < 0.05). Following slips, participants with MS had significantly greater stance limb knee flexion (P < 0.05), suggesting inadequate lower limb support to recover balance post-slip. Following trips, participants with MS had significantly delayed response initiation, lower toe clearance, shorter step length, and greater trunk sway (P < 0.05). Fewer participants with MS showed a hopping response to clear the obstacle (P < 0.05). INTERPRETATION Multiple sclerosis impairs reactive balance responses to a trip and slip associated with reduced lower limb function and delayed postural responses. Neurorehabilitation targeting reactive balance may facilitate fall prevention in people with multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
Slips and falls are common occupational incidents worldwide. The friction on a floor surface is one of the critical environmental factors affecting the risk of a slip. In this research, we conducted friction measurements on stone and ceramic floor tiles under dry, wet, and water–detergent (WD) solution covered conditions using a horizontal pull slip meter (HPS). Our purposes were to quantify the slip resistance of commonly used stone and ceramic floors under different surface conditions and to validate the curvilinear relationship between the coefficient of friction (COF) and surface roughness of the floors proposed in the literature. The COF data were analyzed together with a surface profile parameter (Ra) of the floor samples. The results showed that the COFs of the stone floors were significantly (p < 0.0001) higher than those of the ceramic floors. All the floors under the dry conditions were slip resistant when adopting the ANSI 1264.2 criterion. Two and five ceramic floors were not slip resistant under the wet and WD solution covered conditions, respectively. Three polynomial regression equations were established to describe the relationship between the COF and Ra. The curvilinear functions of these models indicate that the three-zone (initial growth, steady-growth, and plateau) concept concerning the COF–Ra relationship in the literature was valid when static COF values measured using an HPS were adopted. In addition, the three-zone concept was valid not only on WD solution covered surfaces but also on dry and wet surfaces.

Abstract
Slips can occur at any time during stance. Accordingly, time-dependent tangential ground reaction forces likely produce a diverse range of slipping foot mechanics when traction is lost, thus requiring flexible recovery strategies to prevent falls. However, previous research has focused on slip onset in early stance, often with experimental anteroposterior constraints on the slipping foot, despite the diversity of environmental slips and falls. This study aimed to determine the effects of slip onset time on slip direction, severity (distance and velocity), and compensatory stepping responses. Ten young adults received slipping perturbations at different times during the stance phase of walking via a wearable device that reduces available friction while allowing the slipping foot to slide freely within the horizontal plane. Slip direction, distance, and peak velocity, compensatory step direction and distance, and upper body angular momentum magnitude and plane of rotation were derived from kinematic data. All outcome measurements significantly correlated with the time of slip onset. Slip direction and the plane of rotation of angular momentum deviated widely from the sagittal plane, exhibiting laterally-directed components exceeding those in the anteroposterior direction. As slip onset occurred later in stance, slip severity decreased while compensatory steps became longer and progressed from a posterior to anterior placement. These results provide insight into critical times within stance when slips are most severe, and into the diversity of slipping mechanics caused by changes in slip onset time.

Abstract
Minimal footwear has become more ubiquitous; however, it may increase slip severity. This study specifically examined the slipping kinematics of flip-flop sandals. Invoked slips from standing were evaluated in dry and wet tile, and a unique wet footbed + wet tile condition, with 40, 50, and 60% bodyweight (BW) committed to the slipping foot. Water did not alter peak slip velocity (PV) at 40% BW, but PV increased with greater slip-foot force on wet tile by ~1 m/s. Interestingly, when floor-contact was lost during the slip, the flip-flops could come off the heel. This decoupling occurred most often when both the tile and footbed were either dry or wet. Given that both decoupling and greater PV were observed on wet tile, slipping in flip-flops under wet conditions may have more serious consequences. The results highlight that slips may occur at both the foot-flip-flop, and flip-flop-tile interfaces.

Abstract
Post-stroke rehabilitation often aims to increase walking speeds, as faster walking is associated with improved functional status and quality of life. However, for successful community ambulation, ability to modulate (increase and decrease) walking speeds is more important than walking continuously at constant speeds. Increasing paretic propulsive forces to increase walking speed has been extensively examined; however, little is known about the mechanics of slow walking post-stroke. The primary purpose of this study was to identify the effects of increased and decreased walking speeds on post-stroke kinetics and ankle kinematics. Fifteen individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis and 15 non-neurologically impaired controls walked over an instrumented treadmill under: slow, self-selected, and fast walking speeds. We examined the peak propulsive forces, propulsive impulse, peak braking forces, braking impulse, and ankle kinematics under each condition. When walking at slow walking speeds, paretic limbs were unable to reduce braking impulse and peak propulsive force or modulate ankle kinematics. Impaired modulation of paretic gait kinetics during slow walking places people post-stroke at high risks for slip-related falls. These findings suggest the need for developing gait retraining paradigms for slow walking in individuals chronically post-stroke that target the ability of the paretic limb to modulate braking forces.

Abstract
Falls are extremely common in occupational settings. Intrinsic factors such as overexertion and extrinsic factors such as the supporting surface are causative factors of falls. The impact of prolonged exposure to a slippery surface on postural stability has not been previously studied. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effect of extended exposure to a dry and a slippery surface on postural stability. Eighteen males (age: 21.17 ± 3.38 years; height: 1.77 ± 0.08 m; mass: 89.81 ± 14.23 kg) were recruited and subjected to one-hour walking on a dry surface and a slippery surface on two different days. Participants’ balance was assessed using a force platform in stable and unstable conditions at 0, 30, and 60 min. Postural sway variables were analyzed using a 2 (surface) × 3 (time) repeated-measures ANOVA. Significant time main effects were observed in the stable condition with greater balance decrements at 30 and 60 min. Greater balance decrements were observed on the slippery surface compared to the dry surface in the unstable condition. The balance decrements can be attributed to overexertion due to the physiological workload of prolonged walking and to the potential gait modifications due to walking on the slippery surface.

Abstract
Muscle activity from the slipping leg have been previously used to analyze slip induced falls. However, the impact of casual alternative footwear on slipping leg muscle activity when exposed to slippery environments is still unknown. The purpose of the study was to analyze the impact of alternative footwear (crocs (CC) and flip-flops (FF)) compared to slip-resistant footwear (LT) on lower extremity muscle activity when exposed to dry gait (NG), unexpected (US), alert (AS), and expected slips (ES). Eighteen healthy males (age: 22.3 ± 2.2 years; height: 177.7 ± 6.9 cm; weight: 79.3 ± 7.6 kg) completed the study in a repeated measures design in three footwear sessions separated by 48 h. Electromyography (EMG) muscle activity from four muscles of the lead/slipping leg was measured during the stance phase of the gait-slip trials. A 3 (footwear) × 4 (gait-slip trials) repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze EMG dependent variables mean, peak, and percent of maximal voluntary contraction. Greater lower extremity muscle activation during the stance phase was seen in US and AS conditions compared to NG and ES. In addition, footwear differences were seen for the alternative footwear (CC and FF) during US and AS, while the low top slip resistant shoe had no differences across all gait trials, suggesting it as the most efficient footwear of choice, especially when maneuvering slippery flooring conditions, either with or without the knowledge of an impending slip.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess the effects of the initial stepping limb on posterior fall recovery in individuals with chronic stroke, as well as to determine the benefits of fall-recovery training on these outcomes. METHODS This was a single-group intervention study of 13 individuals with chronic stroke. Participants performed up to six training sessions, each including progressively challenging, treadmill-induced perturbations from a standing position. Progressions focused on initial steps with the paretic or non-paretic limb. The highest perturbation level achieved, the proportion of successful recoveries, step and trunk kinematics, as well as stance-limb muscle activation about the ankle were compared between the initial stepping limbs in the first session. Limb-specific outcomes were also compared between the first and last training sessions. FINDINGS In the first session, initial steps with the non-paretic limb were associated with a higher proportion of success and larger perturbations than steps with the paretic limb (p = 0.02, Cohen's d = 0.8). Paretic-limb steps were wider relative to the center of mass (CoM; p = 0.01, d = 1.3), likely due to an initial standing position with the CoM closer to the non-paretic limb (p = 0.01, d = 1.4). In the last training session, participants recovered from a higher proportion of perturbations and advanced to larger perturbations (p < 0.05, d > 0.6). There were no notable changes in kinematic or electromyography variables with training (p > 0.07, d < 0.5). INTERPRETATION The skill of posterior stepping in response to a perturbation can be improved with practice in those with chronic stroke, we were not able to identify consistent underlying kinematic mechanisms behind this adaptation.

Abstract
Slips and falls on sloped roof surfaces remain an important safety issue among construction workers. The slip potential has been conventionally analyzed and assessed primarily based on ground reaction forces, which cannot differentiate the specific roles of each of the force factors (e.g., workers' motions-induced dynamic forces and slope-induced static forces) contributing to the slip potential. Their differentiation may enhance the understanding of the slip mechanisms on the sloped roof surfaces and help develop effective walking and working strategies/tactics to minimize the dangerous slips on the elevated roofs. Hence, the objective of this study is to develop a biodynamic method as an additional tool for analyzing the slip potential of a worker walking or working on sloped roof surfaces. A whole-body biodynamic model is proposed and used to develop the alternative method, in which the slip potential is expressed as an analytical function of its major controlling factors including coefficient of friction, slope angle, and biodynamic forces. Some experimental data available in the literature are used to demonstrate the application of the proposed method. The results suggest that the slope may not change the basic trends of the biodynamic forces, but the slope may affect their magnitudes, which can be explained using the system's energy equation also derived from the whole-body biodynamic model. The analytical results suggest that reducing the body acceleration in uphill direction or the deceleration in downhill direction can reduce the slip potential. 'Zigging' and 'zagging' walking on a sloped surface may also reduce the slip potential, as it reduces the effective slope angle. The proposed biodynamic theory can be used to enhance the safety guidelines not only for roofers but also for people walking on ramps, inclined walkways, and mountain terrains.

Abstract
Aim: Falls commonly occur from trips and slips while walking. Recovery strategies from trips and backward falling slips have been extensively studied. However, until recently, forward falling slips (FFSs) have been considered less dangerous and have been understudied. This study aimed first to create an application to realistically simulate FFSs using a split-belt instrumented treadmill and then to understand the biomechanical requirements for young adults to recover from an FFS. Methods: We developed a semi-automatic custom-made application on D-Flow that triggered FFSs by briefly and unexpectedly increasing the speed (a = 5 m·s-2) of the right belt during stance. To validate the protocol, we tested against criteria defined for an ecologically and experimentally valid FFS: unexpected occurrence of the slip, increased foot velocity, forward loss of balance during the slip and consistent perturbation timing. We evaluated the recovery strategies of 17 young adults by measuring dynamic stability, joint moments and ground reaction force (GRF) vector angles before, during and on 15 steps following the FFS. Results: The application successfully triggered FFSs, according to the criteria we defined. Participants' balance returned to normal for a minimum of three consecutive steps in 10.9 (7.0) steps. Recovery from the FFSs was characterised by larger hip flexor and knee extensor moments to support the centre of mass during the slip, and a longer first recovery step with large hip extensor moments to arrest the fall followed by large knee extensor moments to raise and advance the centre of mass into the next step (p < 0.001 compared with normal gait). Subsequent steps progressively returned to normal. Conclusion: This is the first study to experimentally simulate FFSs meeting the aforementioned criteria, and to measure their effects on the dynamic balance and kinetic parameters. The split-belt instrumented treadmill proved a promising tool to better study the mechanisms of falls and recovery. The required large hip and knee joint moments generally agree with findings on trips and backward falling slips and provide an indication of the functional capacities that should be targeted in fall-prevention interventions. These findings should be used to better understand and target the mechanisms of balance loss and falls in older adults following FFSs.

Abstract
Slip-induced falls are among the most common causes of major occupational injuries and economic loss in Canada. Identifying the risk factors associated with slip events is key to developing preventive solutions to reduce falls. One factor is the slip-resistance quality of footwear, which is fundamental to reducing the number of falls. Measuring footwear slip resistance with the recently developed Maximum Achievable Angle (MAA) test requires a trained researcher to identify slip events in a simulated winter environment. The human capacity for information processing is limited and human error is natural, especially in a cold environment. Therefore, to remove conflicts associated with human errors, in this paper a deep three-dimensional convolutional neural network is proposed to detect the slips in real-time. The model has been trained by a new dataset that includes data from 18 different participants with various clothing, footwear, walking directions, inclined angles, and surface types. The model was evaluated on three types of slips: Maxi-slip, midi-slip, and mini-slip. This classification is based on the slip perception and recovery of the participants. The model was evaluated based on both 5-fold and Leave-One-Subject-Out (LOSO) cross validation. The best accuracy of 97% was achieved when identifying the maxi-slips. The minimum accuracy of 77% was achieved when classifying the no-slip and mini-slip trials. The overall slip detection accuracy was 86% with sensitivity and specificity of 81% and 91%, respectively. The overall accuracy dropped by about 2% in LOSO cross validation. The proposed slip detection algorithm is not only beneficial for footwear manufactures to improve their footwear slip resistance quality, but it also has other potential applications, such as improving the slip resistance properties of flooring in healthcare facilities, commercial kitchens, and oil drilling platforms.

Abstract
Residential roofers have the highest rate of falls in the construction sector with injuries and fatalities costing billions of dollars annually. The sloped roof surface is the most predominant component within the residential roof work environment. Postural stability on a sloped work environment is not well studied. Calculating inclination angles (IAs) using the lateral ankle marker could be a quality measure to determine how cross-slope roof walking will influence stability. Will cross-slope roof-walking effect anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) IAs in adult males? Eleven adult males participated in two testing sessions-level and cross-slope roof gait session on a 6/12 pitched roof segment. Changes in AP and ML IAs between conditions were compared at: heel strike (HS) and toe off (TO). Legs were analyzed separately due to the cross-slope walking. The left foot was 'higher' on the sloped roof and the right was 'lower.' Significant increases (p ≤ 0.006) in IAs were observed due to the sloped roof in all conditions except the AP 'lower' leg (p = 0.136). Increases in IA suggest a decrease in postural stability as the body will result in greater sway compared to a natural posture. Increases in AP IAs may cause slipping in the anterior or posterior direction as the normal force will decrease during HS and TO. In the ML direction, fall risk is increased and more stress is placed on the hip abductors in order to reduce falling. Thus traversing a sloped roof surface reduces stability of healthy workers and escalates injury/fall risk factors.

Abstract
Background High heel shoes (HHS) can affect human postural control because elevated heel height (HH) may result in plantar flexed foot and limit ankle joint range of motion during walking. Effects of HH and HHS wearing experience on postural stability during self-initiated and externally triggered perturbations are less examined in the literature. Hence, the objective of the present study is to investigate the influences of HH on human postural stability during dynamic perturbations, perceived stability, and functional mobility between inexperienced and experienced HHS wearers. Methods A total of 41 female participants were recruited (21 inexperienced HHS wearers and 20 experienced HHS wearers). Sensory organization test (SOT), motor control test (MCT), and limits of stability (LOS) were conducted to measure participant’s postural stability by using computerized dynamic posturography. Functional reach test and timed up and go test were performed to measure functional mobility. The participants’ self-perceived stability was assessed by visual analog scale. Four pairs of shoes with different HH (i.e., 0.8, 3.9, 7.0, and 10.1 cm) were applied to participants randomly. Repeated measures analysis of variance was conducted to detect the effects of HH and HHS wearing experience on each variable. Results During self-initiated perturbations, equilibrium score remarkably decreased when wearing 10.1 cm compared with flat shoes and 3.9 cm HHS. The contribution of vision to postural stability was larger in 10.1 cm HHS than in flat shoes. The use of ankle strategy worsened when HH increased to 7 cm. Similarly, the directional control of the center of gravity (COG) decreased for 7 cm HHS in LOS. Experienced wearers showed significantly higher percentage of ankle strategy and COG directional control than novices. Under externally triggered perturbations, postural stability was substantially decreased when HH reached 3.9 cm in MCT. No significant difference was found in experienced wearers compared with novices in MCT. Experienced wearers exhibited considerably better functional mobility and perceived stability with increased HH. Conclusions The use of HHS may worsen dynamic postural control and functional mobility when HH increases to 3.9 cm. Although experienced HHS wearers exhibit higher proportion of ankle strategy and COG directional control, the experience may not influence overall human postural control. Sensory organization ability, ankle strategy and COG directional control might provide useful information in developing a safety system and prevent HHS wearers from falling.

Abstract
Worn shoes are known to contribute to slip-and-fall risk, a common cause of workplace injuries. However, guidelines for replacing shoes are not well developed. Recent experiments and lubrication theory suggest that the size of the worn region is an important contributor to the shoe tread's ability to drain fluid and therefore the under-shoe friction. This study evaluated a simple test for comparing the size of the worn region relative to a common object (AAA and AA battery) as a means of determining shoe replacement. This study consisted of three components involving slip-resistant shoes: Experiment #1: a longitudinal, mechanical, accelerated wear experiment; Experiment #2: a longitudinal experiment where the same shoes were tested after each month of worker use; and Experiment #3: a cross-sectional experiment that exposed participants to a slippery condition, while donning their own worn shoes. The COF (Experiments #1 and #2); under-shoe fluid pressure (all experiments); and slip severity (Experiment #3) were compared across outcomes (fail/pass) of the battery tests. Larger fluid pressures, lower coefficient of friction, and more severe slips were observed for shoes that failed the battery tests compared with those passing the tests. This method offers promise for assessing loss in friction and an increase in slip risk for slip-resistant shoes.

Abstract
Footwear plays an important role in worker safety. Work boots with safety toes are often utilized at mine sites to protect workers from hazards. Increasingly, mining operations require metatarsal guards in addition to safety toe protection in boots. While these guards provide additional protection, the impact of metatarsal guards on gait are unknown. This study aimed to measure the effects of 4 safety work boots, steel toe, and steel toe with metatarsal protection in wader- and hiker-style boots, on level and inclined walking gait characteristics, during ascent and descent. A total of 10 participants completed this study. A motion capture system measured kinematics that allowed for the calculation of key gait parameters. Results indicated that gait parameters changed due to incline, similar to previous literature. Wader-style work boots reduced ankle range of motion when ascending an incline. Hip, knee, and ankle ranges of motion were also reduced during descent for this style of boot. Wader-style boots with metatarsal guards led to the smallest ankle range of motion when descending an inclined walkway. From these results, it is likely that boot style affects gait parameters and may impact a miner's risk for slips, trips, or falls.

Abstract
Slip outcomes are categorized as either a backward loss of balance (LOB) or a no loss of balance (no-LOB) in which an individual does not take a backward step to regain their stability. LOB includes falls and nonfalls, while no-LOB includes skate overs and walkovers. Researchers are uncertain about which factors determine slip outcomes and at which critical instants they do so. The purpose of the study was to investigate factors affecting slip outcomes in proactive and early reactive phases by analyzing 136 slip trials from 68 participants (age: 72.2 [5.3] y, female: 22). Segment angles and average joint moments in the sagittal plane of the slipping limb were compared for different slip outcomes. The results showed that knee flexor, hip extensor, and plantar flexor moments were significantly larger for no-LOB than for LOB in the midproactive phase, leading to smaller shank-ground and foot-ground angles at the slip onset, based on forward dynamics. In the early reactive phase, the hip extensor and plantar flexor moments were larger for no-LOB than for LOB, and all segment angles were smaller for no-LOB. Our findings indicate that the shank angle and knee moment were the major determinants of slip outcomes in both proactive and reactive phases.

Abstract
Most animals can successfully travel across cluttered, uneven environments and cope with enormous changes in surface friction, deformability and stability. However, the mechanisms used to achieve such remarkable adaptability and robustness are not fully understood. Even more limited is the understanding of how soft, deformable animals such as tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta (caterpillars) can control their movements as they navigate surfaces that have varying stiffness and are oriented at different angles. To fill this gap, we analyzed the stepping patterns of caterpillars crawling on two different types of substrate (stiff and soft) and in three different orientations (horizontal and upward/downward vertical). Our results show that caterpillars adopt different stepping patterns (i.e. different sequences of transition between the swing and stance phases of prolegs in different body segments) based on substrate stiffness and orientation. These changes in stepping pattern occur more frequently in the upward vertical orientation. The results of this study suggest that caterpillars can detect differences in the material properties of the substrate on which they crawl and adjust their behavior to match those properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Falls are the leading cause of injuries among older adults. Perturbation-based balance training (PBT) is an innovative approach to fall prevention that aims to improve the reactive balance response following perturbations such as slipping and tripping. Many of these PBT studies have targeted reactive balance after slipping or tripping, despite both contributing to a large proportion of older adult falls. The goal of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the effects of PBT targeting slipping and tripping on laboratory-induced slips and trips. To build upon prior work, the present study included: 1) a control group; 2) separate training and assessment sessions; 3) PBT methods potentially more amenable for use outside the lab compared to methods employed elsewhere, and 4) individualized training for older adult participants. METHODS Thirty-four community-dwelling, healthy older adults (61-75 years) were assigned to PBT or a control intervention using minimization. Using a parallel design, reactive balance (primary outcome) and fall incidence were assessed before and after four sessions of BRT or a control intervention involving general balance exercises. Assessments involved exposing participants to an unexpected laboratory-induced slip or trip. Reactive balance and fall incidence were compared between three mutually-exclusive groups: 1) baseline participants who experienced a slip (or trip) before either intervention, 2) post-control participants who experienced a slip (or trip) after the control intervention, and 3) post-PBT participants who experienced a slip (or trip) after PBT. Neither the participants nor investigators were blinded to group assignment. RESULTS All 34 participants completed all four sessions of their assigned intervention, and all 34 participants were analyzed. Regarding slips, several measures of reactive balance were improved among post-PBT participants when compared to baseline participants or post-control participants, and fall incidence among post-PBT participants (18%) was lower than among baseline participants (80%). Regarding trips, neither reactive balance nor fall incidence differed between groups. CONCLUSIONS PBT targeting slipping and tripping improved reactive balance and fall incidence after laboratory-induced slips. Improvements were not observed after laboratory-induced trips. The disparity in efficacy between slips and trip may have resulted from differences in dosage and specificity between slip and trip training. Abstract
BACKGROUND Following incomplete spinal cord injury, people often move slowly in an effort to maintain stability during walking maneuvers. Here we examine how maneuver speed impacts frontal-plane stability in people with incomplete spinal cord injury. We hypothesized that the challenge to control frontal-plane stability would increase with maneuver speed; specifically, the minimum lateral margin of stability would be smaller and the required coefficient of friction to avoid a slip would be greater during fast vs. preferred speed maneuvers. METHODS We measured kinematics and ground reaction forces as 12 individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury performed side-step, lateral maneuvers at preferred and fast speeds. We examined four sequential steps: the Setup and Pushoff steps initiated the maneuver, and the Landing and Recovery steps arrested the maneuver. FINDINGS Our hypotheses were partially supported. Maneuver time was shorter during fast vs. preferred speed maneuvers (p = 0.003). Minimum lateral margin of stability was smaller during the Setup step of fast vs. preferred speed maneuvers (p = 0.026). We found no differences in minimum lateral margin of stability between speeds for the Landing and Recovery steps (p > 0.05). The required coefficient of friction was not different between fast and preferred speed maneuvers (p = 0.087). INTERPRETATION The greatest effect of increasing maneuver speed occurred during the Setup step; as speed increased, participants reduced their minimum lateral margin of stability ipsilateral to the maneuver direction. This action allowed maneuvers to be performed more quickly without requiring a greater lateral impulse during the Pushoff step. However, this strategy reduced passive stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Novel lower-limb prostheses aim to improve the quality of locomotion of individuals with an amputation. This study evaluates the biomechanics of a novel bionic foot during walking. METHODS Able-bodied individuals (n = 7) and individuals with a transfemoral (n = 6) or transtibial amputation (n = 6) were included. Able-bodied individuals conducted one experimental trial, whereas individuals with transtibial and transfemoral amputations conducted a familiarization (with current prosthesis) and two experimental trials using a passive and bionic prosthesis. Each trial consisted of 3 bouts of 2 min of treadmill walking at different speeds. Biomechanical data were gathered using a force platform and motion capture system and analysed using Statistical Parametric Mapping and (non)-parametric tests. FINDINGS Conventional prosthetic feet alter gait patterns and induce locomotion difficulties. While walking at a normal speed with the passive prosthesis, transtibial amputees display reduced maximum heel forces, increased ankle and trunk angular velocities at midstance, and increased knee angle during stance and swing phases on their effected side (P ≤ 0.026). Improved lower-limb kinematics was demonstrated during slow and normal speed walking with the bionic prosthesis; however, dynamic trunk stability was negatively impacted during this condition. The bionic prosthesis did not benefit transfemoral amputees at any walking speed. INTERPRETATION Transtibial amputees can better approximate typical movement patterns at slow and normal walking speeds using the novel bionic prosthesis; however the same benefit was not observed in transfemoral amputees.

Abstract
Slip and fall incidents at work remain an important class of injury and fatality causing mechanisms. An extensive body of safety research has accumulated on this topic. This article presents an analysis of this research domain. Two bibliometric visualization tools are applied: VOSviewer and HistCite. Samples of 618 slip and fall related articles are obtained from the Web of Science database. Networks of institutions, authors, terms, and chronological citation relationships are established. Collaboration and research activities of the slip and fall research community show that most contributors are from the United States, with the (now closed) Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety the most influential research organization. The results of a term clustering analysis show that the slip and fall research can be grouped into three sub-domains: epidemiology, gait/biomechanics, and tribology. Of these, early research focused mainly on tribology, whereas research on gait/biomechanics and epidemiological studies are relatively more recent. Psychological aspects of slip and fall incident occurrence represent a relatively under-investigated research topic, in which future contributions may provide new insights and safety improvements. Better linking of this research domain with other principles and methods in safety science, such as safety management and resilience, may also present valuable future development paths.

Abstract
SummaryThis study investigates the effectiveness of a robot-mediated strategy aimed at promoting balance recovery after multidirectional slippages. Six older adults were asked to manage anteroposterior and mediolateral slippages while donning an active pelvis orthosis (APO). The APO was set up either to assist volunteers during balance loss or to be transparent. The margin of stability, in sagittal and frontal planes, was the main metric to assess the effectiveness of balance recovery. Results showed that the assistive strategy is effective at promoting balance recovery in the sagittal plane, for both perturbing paradigms; however, it is not effective at controlling stability in the frontal plane.

Abstract
Background Task-specific perturbation training is a widely studied means of fall prevention, utilizing techniques that induce slips or slip-like perturbations during gait. Though effective, these methods only simulate narrow ranges within the larger space of possible slipping conditions encountered in daily life. Here we describe and test a novel, wearable apparatus designed to address these limitations and simulate a diverse range of slipping disturbances. Methods The device consists of wireless triggering and detachable outsole components that provide adequate friction with the floor when secured to the wearer’s foot, but suddenly create a low-friction surface underfoot upon release. “Benchtop” tests were carried out to quantify device triggering characteristics (i.e. cutting temperature, release delay) and the resulting friction reduction. The device was also tested on six healthy young adults (3 female, age 23 ± 2.4 years), who walked with and without the device to observe how gait kinematics and spatiotemporal parameters were influenced, then performed 12 walking trials ending with a slip delivered by the device. Each participant also completed a survey to obtain opinions on device safety, device comfort, slip realism, and slip difficulty. A linear mixed effects analysis was employed to compare subject spatiotemporal parameters with and without the apparatus, as well as correlation coefficients and root mean square errors (RMSE) to assess the impact of the device on lower limb gait kinematics. Slip onset phases, distances, directions, velocities, and recovery step locations were also calculated. Results This device rapidly diminishes available friction from static coefficients of 0.48 to 0.07, albeit after a substantial delay (0.482 ± 0.181 s) between signal reception and outsole release. Strong correlations (R > 0.93) and small RMSE between gait kinematics with and without the device indicate minimal effects on natural gait patterns, however some spatiotemporal parameters were significantly impacted. A diverse range of slip perturbations and recovery steps were successfully elicited by the device. Conclusions Our results highlight the efficacy and utility of a wearable slipping device to deliver diverse slip conditions. Such an apparatus enables the study of unconstrained slips administered across the gait cycle, as well as during different locomotor behaviors like turning, negotiating slopes, and level changes.

Abstract
Background and Purpose Short term adaptations in the Ia afferent-motoneuron pathway, as measured using the H-reflex, in response to altered ground reaction forces (GRFs) applied at the feet during slope walking have been observed in the non-impaired nervous system. The ability of the stroke-impaired nervous system to adapt to altered GRFs have not been examined. The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of altered propulsive and braking forces applied at the feet, which naturally occurs when walking on different slopes, on adaptations of the H-reflex pathway in individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. Methods Twelve individuals chronically post-stroke and 10 age-similar non-neurologically impaired controls walked on an instrumented treadmill for 20 min under level, upslope and downslope conditions. GRFs were measured during walking and soleus H-reflexes were recorded prior to and immediately after walking. A 3 (limbs: paretic, non-paretic, and non-impaired) × 3 (slope: level, upslope, downslope) mixed factorial ANOVA was conducted on the propulsive and braking forces. A 2 (limb: paretic and non-impaired) × 2 (time: pre and post) × 3 (slope: level, upslope, and downslope) mixed factorial ANOVA was conducted to assess the soleus H-reflex amplitudes. Results In both post-stroke and non-impaired groups, during downslope walking, peak propulsive forces decreased, while peak braking forces increased. In contrast, during upslope walking, peak propulsive forces increased and peak braking forces decreased. We observed reduced soleus H-reflex amplitudes immediately following 20 min of level, downslope and upslope walking in non-impaired individuals but not in the paretic legs of individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis. Discussion and Conclusion Similar pattern of change in peak propulsive and braking forces with respect to different slopes was observed in both individuals post-stroke and non-impaired individuals, but the magnitude of GRFs were smaller in individuals post-stroke due to the slower walking speed. Our results suggested that impaired modulation of the H-reflex pathway potentially underlies the lack of neuroadaptations in individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis.

Abstract
Shoe wear is known to increase slipping risk, but few studies have systematically studied this relationship. This study investigated the impact of progressive shoe wear on the available coefficient of friction (ACOF) and under-shoe fluid dynamics. Five different slip-resistant shoes were progressively worn using an accelerated, abrasive, wear protocol. The ACOF and fluid forces (the load supported by the fluid) were measured as shoes were slipped across a surface contaminated with a diluted glycerol solution. As the shoes became worn, an initial increase in ACOF was followed by a steady decrease. Low fluid forces were observed prior to wear followed by increased fluid forces as the worn region became larger. Results suggest that traction performance decreases particularly when the heel region without tread exceeds a size of 800 mm2. This study supports the concept of developing shoe replacement guidelines based upon the size of the worn region to reduce occupational slips.

Abstract
Humans can walk without falling despite some external perturbations, but the control mechanisms by which this stability is achieved have not been fully characterized. While numerous walking simulations and robots have been constructed, no full-state walking controller for even a simple model of walking has been derived from human walking data. Here, to construct such a feedback controller, we applied thousands of unforeseen perturbations to subjects walking on a treadmill and collected data describing their recovery to normal walking. Using these data, we derived a linear controller to make the classical inverted pendulum model of walking respond to perturbations like a human. The walking model consists of a point-mass with two massless legs and can be controlled only through the appropriate placement of the foot and the push-off impulse applied along the trailing leg. We derived how this foot placement and push-off impulse are modulated in response to upper-body perturbations in various directions. This feedback-controlled biped recovers from perturbations in a manner qualitatively similar to human recovery. The biped can recover from perturbations over twenty times larger than deviations experienced during normal walking and the biped's stability is robust to uncertainties, specifically, large changes in body and feedback parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vinyl composite tile (VCT), which is a common flooring in workplaces, is sometimes utilized as the standard floor material for mechanical slip testing experiments. Unfortunately, VCT is a sub-optimal standard test material, since it changes over time and is difficult to manufacture consistently. PURPOSE This study aimed to identify a durable laboratory-grade substitute flooring that could provide traction results that are representative of footwear performance on VCT. METHODS Eight polymer tiles (cast nylon, polyethylene, polycarbonate, acetal, Delrin, PTFE, polypropylene, and nylon) were tested and the available coefficient of friction (ACOF) was measured and compared with that of two VCT designs. First, a screening test was performed to identify good material candidates based on six shoes and two contaminants (water and oil). Two surrogate candidate tiles were then tested across 17 shoes and three contaminant conditions (water, sodium laurel sulfate, and oil). RESULTS Cast nylon tile was found to be the most generalizable VCT surrogate, exhibiting strong correlations with both VCTs for oil contamination. None of candidates were representative of the VCTs for other contaminants. CONCLUSIONS Cast nylon may be a useful alternative for VCT for standard slip testing of footwear in oily conditions.

Abstract
It is important to find criteria for preventive measures and appropriate assistive devices to reduce pedestrian injuries and increase walking in winter. Reducing the rate of falls on icy surfaces and improving people’s ability to safely cross a street in winter conditions by achieving an adequate walking speed, for example, need to be considered. This study explores pedestrian perceptions of fall risk, balance, and footfall transitions while using different designs for anti-slip devices on ice and snow-covered ice and relates these to measures of gait speed and friction. Trials were performed with nine pedestrians testing 19 anti-slip devices on ice and ice covered with snow. Laboratory tests of the dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) on plain ice were also performed. The findings suggest that there was conformity in the participants’ perceptions of good balance and low fall risk for one-fifth of the devices (three whole-foot designs and one design with built-in spikes). We also found that gait speed on icy pedestrian crossings is related to perceived fall-risk and balance control, but not to DCOF of the anti-slip devices.

Treadmill-gait slip training in community-dwelling older adults: mechanisms of immediate adaptation for a progressive ascending-mixed-intensity protocol. Exp Brain Res 2019; 237:2305-2317. Abstract
The study purpose was to investigate whether older adults could improve their stability against a backward loss of balance (BLOB) after receiving repeated treadmill slips during walking and to see how such adaptive changes would be affected by practice dosage (combination of slip intensity and the number of slips at each intensity). Twenty-five healthy community-dwelling older adults received forty treadmill slips given over eleven blocks at five intensities (P1-P1-P2-P3-P4-P5-P4-P5-P5-P3-P1, larger number indicating higher intensity). Center of mass (COM) stability was calculated as the shortest distance of the instantaneous COM position and velocity relative to the base of support (BOS) from a theoretical threshold for BLOB (larger stability value indicated a better stability against BLOB). Stability, step length, and trunk angle were measured before and after slip onset to reflect proactive and reactive control, respectively. The first slips at each intensity block (i.e., P1, P3, P4, and P5) were compared with the first slips in the last blocks at those intensities to examine main effects of training dosage (intensity and repetition). Improvements in proactive and reactive stability were more pronounced for receiving more slips at larger intensities than fewer slips at smaller intensities. Older adults only demonstrated partial positive scaling effects to proactively, not reactively, establish a more stable initial COM state. The improved proactive stability was associated with an anterior shift of COM position relative to the BOS, resulting from a shorter pre-slip step length. The improved reactive stability was associated with an anterior shift of COM position, resulting from a larger compensatory step length and a faster COM velocity relative to the BOS. Our findings indicated that treadmill-gait slip perturbations elicited similar proactive and reactive control to that from over-ground slip perturbations, but greater slip intensity and repetition might yield more immediate adaptive improvements.

Abstract
Background Exercise has failed to reduce falls in those with chronic stroke. A limitation of traditional exercise is that the motor responses needed to prevent a fall are not elicited (i.e. they lack processing specificity). Balance reactions often require compensatory steps. Therefore, interventions that target such steps have the potential to reduce falls. Computerized treadmills can deliver precise, repeatable, and challenging perturbations as part of a training protocol. The objective of this study was to develop and determine the feasibility of such training applied to those with chronic stroke. We developed the training to address specificity, appropriate duration and repetition, and progressive overloading and individualization. We hypothesized that our intervention would be acceptable, practical, safe, and demonstrate initial signs of efficacy. Methods In this single-arm study, thirteen individuals with chronic stroke (29–77 years old, 2–15 years post stroke) performed up to six training sessions using a computer-controlled treadmill. Each session had separate progressions focused on initial steps with the non-paretic or paretic limbs in response to anterior or posterior falls. Perturbation magnitudes were altered based on performance and tolerance. Acceptability was determined by adherence, or the number of sessions completed. Practicality was documented by the equipment, space, time, and personnel. Adverse events were documented to reflect safety. In order to determine the potential-efficacy of this training, we compared the proportion of successful recoveries and the highest perturbation magnitude achieved on the first and last sessions. Results The training was acceptable, as evident by 12/13 participants completing all 6 sessions. The protocol was practical, requiring one administrator, the treadmill, and a harness. The protocol was safe, as evident by no serious or unanticipated adverse events. The protocol demonstrated promising signs of efficacy. From the first to last sessions, participants had a higher proportion of successful recoveries and progressed to larger disturbances. Conclusions Using a computerized treadmill, we developed an approach to fall-recovery training in individuals with chronic stroke that was specific, considered duration and repetition, and incorporated progressive overloading and individualization. We demonstrated that this training was acceptable, practical, safe, and potentially beneficial for high-functioning individuals with chronic stroke. Abstract
Assessing footwear slip-resistance is critical to preventing slip and fall accidents. The STM 603 (SATRA Technology) is commonly used to assess footwear friction but its ability to predict human slips while walking is unclear. This study assessed this apparatus' ability to predict slips across footwear designs and to determine if modifying the test parameters alters predictions. The available coefficient of friction (ACOF) was measured with the device for nine different footwear designs using 12 testing conditions with varying vertical force, speed and shoe angle. The occurrence of slipping and the required coefficient of friction was quantified from human gait data including 124 exposures to liquid contaminants. ACOF values varied across the test conditions leading to different slip prediction models. Generally, a steeper shoe angle (13°) and higher vertical forces (400 or 500 N) modestly improved predictions of slipping. This study can potentially guide improvements in predictive test conditions for this device. Practitioner Summary: Frictional measures by the STM603 (SATRA Technology) were able to predict human slips under liquid contaminant conditions. Test parameters did have an influence on the measurements. An increased shoe-floor testing angle resulted in better slip predictions than test methods specified in the ASTM F2913 standard.

Abstract
Worn shoes increase the risk of slip and fall accidents. Few research efforts have attempted to predict the progression of shoe wear. This study presents a computational modeling framework that simulates wear progression in footwear outsoles based on finite element analysis and Archard's equation for wear. The results of the computational model were qualitatively and quantitatively compared with experimental results from shoes subjected to an accelerated wear protocol. Key variables of interest were the order in which individual tread blocks were worn and the size of the worn region. The order in which shoe treads became completely worn were strongly correlated between the models and experiments (rs > 0.74, p < 0.005 for all of the shoes). The ability of the model to predict the size of the worn region varied across the shoe designs. Findings demonstrate the capability of the computational modeling methodology to provide realistic predictions of shoe wear progression. This model represents a promising first step to developing a model that can guide footwear replacement programs and footwear design with durable slip-resistance.

Abstract
Task-specific balance training is an approach to fall prevention that has the potential to reduce the number of slip-induced falls. However, a limitation of current task-specific training methods is that they require non-trivial financial and/or equipment resources. This pilot study evaluated the efficacy of two low-cost, low-tech methods for slip recovery training in improving balance recovery ability. The two methods were: 1) repeated unexpected slip training (UST), which involved repeated unexpected slips while walking (similar to current methods of task-specific slip recovery training); and 2) volitional slip-recovery training (VST), which involved practicing a slip recovery response after volitionally stepping to induce a slip-like perturbation. Thirty-six young adults completed one training session (UST, VST, or control), followed by one unexpected, laboratory-induced slip while walking on the following day. Compared to controls, UST and VST resulted in a higher proportion of successful balance recoveries from the laboratory-induced slips. UST improved both proactive control and the reactive stepping response after slipping, while VST improved the ability to arrest the motion of the slipping foot. Based on these preliminary results, UST and VST may provide practical, cost-effective methods for slip recovery training.
