Density matrix-based time-dependent configuration interaction approach to ultrafast spin-flip dynamics

Non-Resonant Magnetic X-ray Scattering as a Probe of Ultrafast Molecular Spin-State Dynamics: An Ab Initio Theory

With the advancement of high harmonic generation and X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) to the attosecond domain, the studies of the ultrafast electron and spin dynamics became possible. Yet, the methods for efficient control and measurement of the quantum state are to be further developed. In this publication, we propose using magnetic X-ray scattering (MXS) for resolving the molecular spin-state dynamics and establish a complete protocol to simulate MXS diffraction patterns in molecules with ab initio quantum chemistry based on the multiconfigurational method. The performance of the method is demonstrated for the simulation of the spin-flip dynamics in the TiCl4 molecule, initiated by an ultrashort X-ray pulse. The consistent variation of the electron population and the circular dichroic patterns show the capability of MXS to quantitatively detect the spin-state dynamics in real time quantitatively. We also conclude that the spatial shape and extent of the spin density can also be inferred by analyzing the diffraction patterns for randomly oriented and aligned molecules.

Nuclear-Electronic Orbital Time-Dependent Configuration Interaction Method

Combining real-time electronic structure with the nuclear-electronic orbital (NEO) method has enabled the simulation of complex nonadiabatic chemical processes. However, accurate descriptions of hydrogen tunneling and double excitations require multiconfigurational treatments. Herein, we develop and implement the real-time NEO time-dependent configuration interaction (NEO-TDCI) approach. Comparison to NEO-full CI calculations of absorption spectra for a molecular system shows that the NEO-TDCI approach can accurately capture the tunneling splitting associated with the electronic ground state as well as vibronic progressions corresponding to double electron-proton excitations associated with excited electronic states. Both of these features are absent from spectra obtained with single reference real-time NEO methods. Our simulations of hydrogen tunneling dynamics illustrate the oscillation of the proton density from one side to the other via a delocalized, bilobal proton wave function. These results indicate that the NEO-TDCI approach is highly suitable for studying hydrogen tunneling and other inherently multiconfigurational systems.

The OpenMolcas Web: A Community-Driven Approach to Advancing Computational Chemistry

The developments of the open-source OpenMolcas chemistry software environment since spring 2020 are described, with a focus on novel functionalities accessible in the stable branch of the package or via interfaces with other packages. These developments span a wide range of topics in computational chemistry and are presented in thematic sections: electronic structure theory, electronic spectroscopy simulations, analytic gradients and molecular structure optimizations, ab initio molecular dynamics, and other new features. This report offers an overview of the chemical phenomena and processes OpenMolcas can address, while showing that OpenMolcas is an attractive platform for state-of-the-art atomistic computer simulations.

Spin-flip dynamics in core-excited states in the basis of irreducible spherical tensor operators

Recent experimental advances in ultrafast science have put different processes occurring on the electronic timescale below a few femtoseconds in focus. In the present theoretical work, we demonstrate how the transformation and propagation of the density matrix in the basis of irreducible spherical tensors can be conveniently used to study sub-few fs spin-flip dynamics in core-excited transition metal compounds. With the help of the Wigner-Eckart theorem, such a transformation separates the essential dynamical information from the geometric factors governed by the angular momentum algebra. We show that an additional reduction can be performed by the physically motivated truncation of the spherical tensor basis. In particular, depending on the degree of coherence, the ultrafast dynamics can be considered semi-quantitative in the notably reduced spherical basis when only the total populations of the basis states of the given spin are of interest. Such truncation should be especially beneficial when the number of high-spin basis states is vast, as it reduces computational costs.

RhoDyn: A ρ-TD-RASCI Framework to Study Ultrafast Electron Dynamics in Molecules

This article presents the program module RhoDyn as part of the OpenMOLCAS project intended to study ultrafast electron dynamics within the density-matrix-based time-dependent restricted active space configuration interaction framework (ρ-TD-RASCI). The formalism allows for the treatment of spin-orbit coupling effects, accounts for nuclear vibrations in the form of a vibrational heat bath, and naturally incorporates (auto)ionization effects. Apart from describing the theory behind and the program workflow, the paper also contains examples of its application to the simulations of the linear L_2,3 absorption spectra of a titanium complex, high harmonic generation in the hydrogen molecule, ultrafast charge migration in benzene and iodoacetylene, and spin-flip dynamics in the core excited states of iron complexes.

Spin trapping and flipping in FeCO through relativistic electron dynamics

Transition metal compounds are very versatile, and their characteristics can differ profoundly depending on their electronic structure. Compounds in which a spin transition from a low-spin to a high-spin state can be achieved through means of an optical excitation are particularly intriguing, as a controlled spin-flip opens promising avenues in areas such as sensing, information technology, molecular switches and energy technology. The fundamental mechanisms in spin crossover and spin transitions remain unanswered, due to the complexity of electronic structure and interplay of relativistic effects. Presented here is a new approach that allows the first direct study of spin flip dynamics through a mapping of spin-mixed to spin-pure states. The method is applied to FeCO and addresses the spin-flip dynamics during a spin transition. Wave packets that combine different spin states are generated through optical excitation and relevant mechanisms in optically triggered spin transitions are discussed.
