Abstract
Clinical populations with basal ganglia pathologies may present with language production impairments, which are often described in combination with comprehension measures or attributed to motor, memory, or processing-speed problems. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we studied word production in four (vascular and non-vascular) pathologies of the basal ganglia: stroke affecting the basal ganglia, small vessel disease, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease. We compared scores of these clinical populations with those of matched cognitively unimpaired adults on four well-established production tasks, namely picture naming, category fluency, letter fluency, and past-tense verb inflection. We conducted a systematic search in PubMed and PsycINFO with terms for basal ganglia structures, basal ganglia disorders and language production tasks. A total of 114 studies were included, containing results for one or more of the tasks of interest. For each pathology and task combination, effect sizes (Hedges' g) were extracted comparing patient versus control groups. For all four populations, performance was consistently worse than that of cognitively unimpaired adults across the four language production tasks (p-values < 0.010). Given that performance in picture naming and verb inflection across all pathologies was quantified in terms of accuracy, our results suggest that production impairments cannot be fully explained by motor or processing-speed deficits. Our review shows that while language production difficulties in these clinical populations are not negligible, more evidence is necessary to determine the exact mechanism that leads to these deficits and whether this mechanism is the same across different pathologies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Memory deficits in mild cognitive impairment related to Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI) are quite heterogeneous, and there is no general agreement on their genesis. OBJECTIVES To define memory phenotypes in de novo PD-MCI and their associations with motor and non-motor features and patients' quality of life. METHODS From a sample of 183 early de novo patients with PD, cluster analysis was applied to neuropsychological measures of memory function of 82 patients with PD-MCI (44.8%). The remaining patients free of cognitive impairment were considered as a comparison group (n = 101). Cognitive measures and structural magnetic resonance imaging-based neural correlates of memory function were used to substantiate the results. RESULTS A three-cluster model produced the best solution. Cluster A (65.85%) included memory unimpaired patients; Cluster B (23.17%) included patients with mild episodic memory disorder related to a "prefrontal executive-dependent phenotype"; Cluster C (10.97%) included patients with severe episodic memory disorder related to a "hybrid phenotype," where hippocampal-dependent deficits co-occurred with prefrontal executive-dependent memory dysfunctions. Cognitive and brain structural imaging correlates substantiated the findings. The three phenotypes did not differ in terms of motor and non-motor features, but the attention/executive deficits progressively increased from Cluster A, through Cluster B, to Cluster C. This last cluster had worse quality of life compared to others. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated the memory heterogeneity of de novo PD-MCI, suggesting existence of three distinct memory-related phenotypes. Identification of such phenotypes can be fruitful in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying PD-MCI and its subtypes and in guiding appropriate treatments. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Introduction: The Oblique Effect denotes superior performance for perceiving horizontal or vertical rather than diagonal or oblique stimuli. The current research investigated responding to oblique test stimuli in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).Method: Four statistically-determined groups (n = 112) were studied; patients with little to no cognitive impairment (non-MCI, n = 39); subtle cognitive impairment (SCI, n = 15); amnestic MCI (aMCI, n = 28); and a combined mixed/dysexecutive MCI (mixed/dys MCI, n = 30). The ability to respond to oblique versus non-oblique test stimuli was assessed using the Judgment of Line Orientation Test (JOLO). Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment was also obtained. Between-group differences for JOLO oblique and non-oblique test stimuli were analyzed. Hierarchical linear regression models were constructed to identify relations between accuracy for oblique and non-oblique test items and neurocognitive domains.Results: The mixed/dys MCI group demonstrated lower accuracy for oblique test items compared to non-MCI patients. Accurate responding to oblique test items was associated with better performance on tests measuring executive control, processing speed, naming/lexical retrieval, and verbal concept formation. No between-group differences were seen for non-oblique items and these items were not associated with cognition.Conclusions:Significant impairment on oblique test items distinguished patients with multi-domain/dysexecutive MCI from non-MCI patients. Accurate responding to oblique test items was associated with a complex array of neuropsychological tests suggesting that multidimensional neuropsychological skills underlie the visuospatial reasoning abilities necessary for successful oblique line identification. Research associating responding to oblique versus non-oblique test stimuli using additional neuropsychological test paradigms, and MRI-defined neuroanatomical regions of interest may provide additional information about the brain-behavior relations that underlie MCI subtypes.

Abstract
HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) commonly feature verbal episodic memory impairment historically characterized by a retrieval deficit, consistent with a classic "subcortical" presentation; however, there are hints of a subtle shift toward a more "cortical" memory profile characterized by a primary encoding deficit. The current study evaluated this possibility by comparing the pattern of HAND-associated verbal episodic memory deficits to those of traditional "subcortical" (i.e., Huntington's disease; HD) versus "cortical" (i.e., left temporal lobe epilepsy with mesial temporal sclerosis; L-MTLE) profiles. Seventy-seven individuals with HAND, 47 individuals with HD, 21 individuals with L-MTLE, and 45 healthy participants were administered the California Verbal Learning Test - 2nd Edition (CVLT-II). CVLT-II profiles were classified as reflecting a primary encoding deficit, retrieval deficit, or a normal profile. Among participants with a deficit profile, the HAND group showed the highest rates of retrieval versus encoding profiles (71% vs. 29%), followed by HD (59% vs. 41%), L-MTLE (46% vs. 54%), and healthy (50% vs. 50%) groups. While significant profile heterogeneity was observed across clinical groups, findings suggest that HIV-associated verbal episodic memory impairments are most consistent with a traditional "subcortical," retrieval deficit profile, consistent with the primary frontostriatal neuropathogenesis of HIV disease.

Abstract
HIV+ population is getting older because of progress in treatments. Yet, there are concerns that Older HIV+ individuals (OHIV+) may be more vulnerable for developing a "cortical" dementia such as Alzheimer Disease (AD). Our aim was to explore the hypothesis that the cognitive deficit extends to ''cortical'' functions in OHIV+ by comparing serial position effects (SPE) in different groups of participants affected by "cortical" or "subcortical" damage. We enrolled a total of 122 subjects: 22 OHIV+ (≥60 years of age), 31 Younger HIV+ (YHIV+) (<60 years of age), 18 participants with AD, 23 subjects with Parkinson Disease (PD), and 28 healthy subjects. All subjects performed verbal learning tasks (VLT) to explore SPE. Factorial analysis of covariance showed a significant effect of "group" (p < 0.001) and "task" (Primacy vs Recency) (p < 0.001), but no significant group*task (p = 0.257) interaction. Compared with healthy subjects (p = 0.003), AD had the most severe reduction of Primacy, confirming a primary "encoding deficit," while PD confirmed a "frontal pattern." OHIV+ showed a memory profile similar to that of PD with a worsening of the cognitive performance in comparison with YHIV+. In conclusion, we did not confirm the "cortical" hypothesis in OHIV+, at least in terms of learning and memory functions.

Temporal Lobe and Frontal-Subcortical Dissociations in Non-Demented Parkinson's Disease with Verbal Memory Impairment. PLoS One 2015. Abstract
Objective The current investigation examined verbal memory in idiopathic non-dementia Parkinson’s disease and the significance of the left entorhinal cortex and left entorhinal-retrosplenial region connections (via temporal cingulum) on memory impairment in Parkinson’s disease. Methods Forty non-demented Parkinson’s disease patients and forty non-Parkinson’s disease controls completed two verbal memory tests – a wordlist measure (Philadelphia repeatable Verbal Memory Test) and a story measure (Logical Memory). All participants received T1-weighted and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (3T; Siemens) sequences. Left entorhinal volume and left entorhinal-retrosplenial connectivity (temporal cingulum edge weight) were the primary imaging variables of interest with frontal lobe thickness and subcortical structure volumes as dissociating variables. Results Individuals with Parkinson’s disease showed worse verbal memory, smaller entorhinal volumes, but did not differ in entorhinal-retrosplenial connectivity. For Parkinson’s disease entorhinal-retrosplenial edge weight had the strongest associations with verbal memory. A subset of Parkinson’s disease patients (23%) had deficits (z-scores < -1.5) across both memory measures. Relative to non-impaired Parkinson’s peers, this memory-impaired group had smaller entorhinal volumes. Discussion Although entorhinal cortex volume was significantly reduced in Parkinson’s disease patients relative to non-Parkinson’s peers, only white matter connections associated with the entorhinal cortex were significantly associated with verbal memory performance in our sample. There was also no suggestion of contribution from frontal-subcortical gray or frontal white matter regions. These findings argue for additional investigation into medial temporal lobe gray and white matter connectivity for understanding memory in Parkinson’s disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in episodic memory are common early in Parkinson's disease (PD) and may be a risk factor for future cognitive decline. Although medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory and frontostriatal (FS) executive systems are thought to play different roles in distinct components of episodic memory impairment in PD, no study has investigated whether different aspects of memory functioning are differentially associated with MTL and FS volumes in nondemented patients without mild cognitive impairment (PD-woMCI). OBJECTIVES The present study investigated MRI markers of different facets of memory functioning in 48 PD-woMCI patients and 42 controls. METHODS Regional volumes were measured in structures comprising the MTL and FS systems and then correlated with key indices of memory from the California Verbal Learning Test. RESULTS In PD-woMCI patients, memory was impaired only for verbal learning, which was not associated with executive, attention/working memory, or visuospatial functioning. Despite an absence of cortical atrophy, smaller right MTL volumes in patients were associated with poorer verbal learning, long delayed free recall, long delayed cued recall, and recognition memory hits and false positives. Smaller right pars triangularis (inferior frontal) volumes were also associated with poorer long delayed cued recall and recognition memory hits. These relationships were not found in controls. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that MTL volumes are sensitive to subtle changes in almost all facets of memory in PD-woMCI, whereas FS volumes are sensitive only to memory performances in cued-testing formats.

Abstract
The long-term consumption of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) juice produce neurotoxic effects in the rat, characterized by an increased motor activity in the open field test and presence of uncoordinated swim (i.e., lateral swimming), in the swim test; which has been associated with damage in the hippocampus (CA1). On the other hand, flavonoids content in the Ginkgo biloba extract has been reported to produces neuroprotective effects at experimental level; therefore we hypothesized that G. biloba extract may prevents the motor alterations produced by cassava juice and reduce cellular damage in hippocampal neurons of the rat. In present study the effect of vehicle, cassava juice (linamarin, 0.30 mg/kg), G. biloba extract (dry extract, 160 mg/kg), and combination of treatment were evaluated in the open field and swim tests to identify locomotor and hippocampal alterations in adult male Wistar rats. All treatments were administered once per day, every 24 h, for 28 days, by oral rout. The effect was evaluated at 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days of treatment. The results show that cassava group from day 14 of treatment increase crossing and rearing in the open field test, as compared with the vehicle group; while in the swim test produces an uncoordinated swim characterized by the lateral swim. In this same group an increase in the number of damage neurons in the hippocampus (CA1) was identified. Interestingly, both behavioral and neuronal alterations produced by cassava juice administration were prevented by treatment with G. biloba extract. The results shown that G. biloba extract exert a protective effect against behavioral and neuronal damage associated with consumption of cassava juice in the rat. These effects are possibly related with flavonoid content in the G. biloba extract.

Abstract
Relatively subtle cognitive disturbances may be present from the initial stages of Parkinson's disease (PD) that progress in many patients to a more severe cognitive impairment and dementia. Several of the initial deficits are ascribed to failure in the frontal-striatal basal ganglia circuits and involve executive defects in planning, initiation, monitoring of goal-directed behaviors and working-memory. Other non-demented PD patients also exhibit visuospatial and memory deficits more representative of posterior cortical functioning and fail performing naming or copying tasks. Major differences in the overall rate of cognitive decline among PD patients support the co-existence of at least two patterns of involution, differentiating a relatively slow decline of fronto-striatal deficits from a more rapid decline of posterior-cortical deficits, with different pathophysiological substrates, genetics, prognosis and response to drugs used to treat the motor symptoms of PD.

Abstract
The incidence and prevalence of older adults living with HIV infection is increasing. Recent reports of increased neuropathologic and metabolic alterations in older HIV+ samples, including increased cortical beta-amyloid, have led some researchers to suggest that aging with HIV may produce a neuropsychological profile akin to that which is observed in “cortical” dementias (e.g., impairment in memory consolidation). To evaluate this possibility, we examined four groups classified by HIV serostatus and age (i.e., younger ≤40 years and older ≥50 years): (1) Younger HIV− (n = 24); (2) Younger HIV+ (n = 24); (3) Older HIV− (n = 20); and (4) Older HIV+ (n = 48). Main effects of aging were observed on episodic learning and memory, executive functions, and visuoconstruction, and main effects of HIV were observed on measures of verbal learning and memory. The interaction of age and HIV was observed on a measure of verbal recognition memory, which post hoc analyses showed to be exclusively attributed to the superior performance of the younger HIV seronegative group. Thus, in this sample of older HIV-infected individuals, the combined effects of HIV and aging do not appear to result in a “cortical” pattern of cognitive deficits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the current study was to clarify the nature and extent of impairment in time- versus event-based prospective memory in Parkinson's disease (PD). Prospective memory is thought to involve cognitive processes that are mediated by prefrontal systems and are executive in nature. Given that individuals with PD frequently show executive dysfunction, it is important to determine whether these individuals may have deficits in prospective memory that could impact daily functions, such as taking medications. Although it has been reported that individuals with PD evidence impairment in prospective memory, it is still unclear whether they show a greater deficit for time- versus event-based cues. METHOD Fifty-four individuals with PD and 34 demographically similar healthy adults were administered a standardized measure of prospective memory that allows for a direct comparison of time-based and event-based cues. In addition, participants were administered a series of standardized measures of retrospective memory and executive functions. RESULTS Individuals with PD demonstrated impaired prospective memory performance compared to the healthy adults, with a greater impairment demonstrated for the time-based tasks. Time-based prospective memory performance was moderately correlated with measures of executive functioning, but only the Stroop Neuropsychological Screening Test emerged as a unique predictor in a linear regression. CONCLUSIONS Findings are interpreted within the context of McDaniel and Einstein's (2000) multiprocess theory to suggest that individuals with PD experience particular difficulty executing a future intention when the cue to execute the prescribed intention requires higher levels of executive control.

Abstract
This study compared verbal learning and memory in patients with autopsy-confirmed dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and patients with Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD). A total of 24 DLB patients, 24 PDD patients, and 24 normal comparison participants were administered the California Verbal Learning Test. The three groups were matched on demographic variables, and the two patient groups were matched on the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale. The results indicated that DLB patients recalled less information than PDD patients on all but one recall measure and displayed a more rapid rate of forgetting. In contrast, the PDD patients committed a greater percentage of perseveration errors than the DLB patients. The two groups did not differ in the percentage of recall intrusion errors or any measures of recognition. A discriminant function analysis (DFA) using short-delay cued recall, percentage of perseveration errors, and List B recall differentiated the DLB and PDD groups with 81.3% accuracy. The application of the DFA algorithm to another sample of 42 PDD patients resulted in a 78.6% correct classification rate. The results suggest that, despite equivalent levels of general cognitive impairment, patients with DLB or PDD exhibit a different pattern of verbal learning and memory deficits.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are neurodegenerative conditions sharing a disorder of alpha-synuclein metabolism. Temporal differences in the emergence of symptoms and clinical features warrant the continued clinical distinction between DLB and PDD. While DLB and PDD groups' neuropsychological profiles often differ from those in Alzheimer's disease (AD), the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of these profiles remain largely unknown. PDD and DLB neuropsychological profiles share sufficient similarity to resist accurate and reliable differentiation. Although heterogeneous cognitive changes (predominantly in memory and executive function) may manifest earlier and more frequently than previously appreciated in Parkinson's disease (PD), and executive deficits may be harbingers of dementia, the enthusiasm to uncritically extend the concept of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to PD should be tempered. Instead, future research might strive to identify the precise neuropsychological characteristics of the prodromal stages of PD, PDD, and DLB which, in conjunction with other potential biomarkers, facilitate early and accurate diagnosis, and the definition of neuroprotective, neurorestorative, and symptomatic treatment endpoints.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the profile of cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) with dementia associated with Parkinson's disease (PDD). METHODS Neuropsychological assessment was performed in 488 patients with PDD and 488 patients with AD using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog). Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate whether the diagnosis could be accurately predicted from the cognitive profile. Additionally, the cognitive profiles were compared with a normative group using standardised effect sizes (Cohen's d). RESULTS Diagnosis was predicted from the cognitive profile, with an overall accuracy of 74.7%. Poor performance of the AD patients on the orientation test in ADAS-cog best discriminated between the groups, followed by poor performance of the PDD patients on the attentional task in MMSE. Both groups showed memory impairment, AD patients performing worse than PDD patients. CONCLUSION The cognitive profile in PDD differs significantly from that in AD. Performance on tests of orientation and attention are best in differentiating the groups.

Abstract
The apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 allele has been associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and weaker episodic memory among elderly. Although this APOE allele has been linked to earlier onset of Parkinson's disease (PD), an association with dementia in PD has been only inconsistently demonstrated. Given the heterogeneity of cognitive impairment patterns in PD, this study sought to determine whether an association exists between APOE genotype and specific cognitive deficits in PD. The neuropsychological test performance of 42 PD patients without an epsilon4 allele (PD-Non4) and of 20 with at least one epsilon4 allele (PD-epsilon4) was compared to that of 146 elderly control subjects (NC). The PD groups were comparable in overall severity of cognitive impairment and disease duration, but the PD-epsilon4 group was younger, had an earlier disease onset, and contained a higher proportion of persons with dementia. Both PD groups showed wide-ranging cognitive impairments relative to NC. Once age differences between groups were controlled for, the PD groups generally did not differ from each other in cognitive performance. However, only the PD-Non4 group demonstrated working memory/attention impairments (digit span, visual span, Trailmaking test) relative to the NC group. Results suggest that the APOE genotype may influence the cognitive phenotype of PD, and specifically that absence of the epsilon4 allele is associated with working memory impairment. Additionally, results are consistent with prior findings showing an association between the epsilon4 allele and earlier onset of PD and presence of dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that patients with frontal-striatal dysfunction demonstrate improved performance on tests of recognition memory relative to free recall memory, suggesting deficits in retrieval processes. Not all studies, however, have indicated that all patients with frontal-striatal dysfunction display this profile. In this study, we examined the ubiquity of this "retrieval deficit" profile in a relatively large sample of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) or Huntington disease (HD). METHODS Participants included 150 patients with PD and 65 patients with HD. Patients were classified as demonstrating a retrieval deficit or not based on a comparison of their standardized performances on the Recognition Discriminability and Long-Delay Free Recall indices from the California Verbal Learning Test. RESULTS Results indicated that 1) a retrieval deficit was more prevalent in patients with HD than PD, 2) this group difference emerged only in patients with at least a mild level of global cognitive impairment, and 3) even when the profile did emerge more frequently in patients with HD, it was present in only 44% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that not all patient groups with frontal-striatal dysfunction display a retrieval deficit profile, but in groups that do (ie, patients with HD), it is more likely to appear in individuals with greater cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The findings of previous studies have suggested that verbal memory impairments were observed in people suffering from Parkinson's disease (PD). Very few studies have examined the comprehensive profile of prose memory deficits that challenges people with PD. METHODS Prose memory of 19 patients with PD was examined. Their performance in three constructs, namely recall accuracy, temporal sequence, and distortions, during immediate, delayed and recognition trials was studied. RESULTS The patients with PD performed significantly worse in recall accuracy and temporal sequencing of information in the immediate recall trial. During the recognition trial, they made more false alarms than their healthy counterparts. CONCLUSIONS Our findings confirm that the performance of people with PD in immediate recall of a prose was impaired. However, the level of performance in subsequent learning and delayed recall trials became comparable to that of the normal controls. The deficit remaining after multiple learning trials was the significantly high false alarms committed in the recognition trial. Our findings highlight the importance of qualitative analysis, in addition to quantitative evaluation, of prose memory in PD.

Abstract
Memory impairment is one of the most common complaints affecting patients with neurodegenerative disorders, and its investigation has provided insights into the function and properties of human memory. The study of Alzheimer's disease has indicated the importance of mesial temporal structures and the hippocampus in episodic memory. In progressive supranuclear palsy, frontotemporal dementias, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease fronto-striatal networks are involved in working memory and higher level cognition. The study of semantic dementia, where there is lobar atrophy of the temporal lobe, has shown that the temporal neocortex has an important function in semantic memory. The investigation of human memory in neurodegenerative disorders suggests that the interaction of networks subserving episodic memory, semantic memory, and working memory contributes to higher level cognition and results in the fundamental homeostatic processes of recall and learning.

Abstract
The neuropsychologist plays a crucial role in three phases of the neurosurgical treatment of movement disorder patients, namely screening, outcome evaluation and research. In screening patients, the differential diagnosis of dementia, impact of depression or other psychiatric conditions, and the influence of disease and medication-induced symptoms on cognitive performance must be determined. Postoperatively, systematic evaluations elucidate the cognitive costs or benefits of the procedure. The neuropsychologist is then able to provide feedback and counselling to the professional staff, patient and family to inform management strategies. Neuropsychologists also study alteration of cognitive processing due to lesions or stimulation, which, in tandem with functional imaging, shed light on plasticity in cortical and subcortical processing.

Abstract
In this review, we argue that a number of current data support the notion that the hippocampal formations play an important role in episodic memory in humans. We will focus on data gathered from three topics within this field: (1) the neuropsychological study of memory in degenerative diseases, which provides striking dissociations of processes, as a function of the location of cerebral lesions and of their functional consequences; (2) the description of patients' memory difficulties after unilateral medial temporal lobectomy. Given the visuo-verbal dissociation, we may anticipate that the study of the effects of such lesions may help in the understanding of the role of the hippocampus in memory, in terms of: (i) the stage of memory processing where the hippocampus is really involved (encoding, consolidation and/or retrieval); (ii) the specificity of the impairments as a function of the nature (verbal vs. visuo-spatial) of the to-be-remembered material; (3) recent evidence from imaging studies: (i) the morphological approach, which provides interesting information with the study of correlations between the volumes of diverse cerebral regions-particularly the volume of the hippocampus-and episodic memory performance and other cognitive measures; (ii) metabolic studies, using PET scan, which were first designed for correlational analyses between performance in episodic memory tasks and glucose utilization at rest in diverse regions of interest, such as the hippocampal formations; (iii) activation studies with PET and functional MRI, which are actually more straightforward, since they allow correlations between the metabolism in regions of interest and performance on line (e.g. during encoding or retrieval of information). In our view, inasmuch as such different approaches-degenerative diseases, lesions or imagery-provide convergent information, they give renewed weight to the notion according to which the hippocampal formations are critically concerned in episodic memory processes.
