Spatial distribution of contaminants in sediments of two rivers crossing Tangier (northern Morocco)

Distribution, ecological, and health risk assessment of trace elements in the surface seawater along the littoral of Tangier Bay (Southwestern Mediterranean Sea)

In the current study, an environmental assessment of surface seawater in Tangier Bay was conducted by analyzing physicochemical parameters and trace elements, such as As, Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu. The results showed mean concentrations (μg/l) of 22.50 for As, 0.46 for Cr, 8.57 for Zn, 15.41 for Cd, 0.23 for Pb, and 1.83 for Cu. While most trace elements met the guidelines, elevated levels of Cd raised concerns about long-term exposure. Pollution indices, including the contamination factor, degree of contamination, and water quality index, indicate the impact of human activities, dividing sites into arsenic-cadmium contamination, wastewater influence, and low pollution levels. Statistical methods, such as ANOVA, revealed no significant differences in trace element levels across the bay. PCA and HCA revealed that Cr, Cu, and Zn originated from common anthropogenic sources, whereas Pb and Cd originated from distinct sources. As indicates that natural geological processes influence its origin.

Seasonal variations of metal concentrations in muscle tissue of tench (Tinca tinca), water and sediment in Beysehir Lake (Turkey)

Concentrations of 10 metals (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in muscle tissue of tench (Tinca tinca), water and sediment in Beysehir Lake were analysed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrophotometry (ICP-AES). Tench is one of the most abundant fish species in Beysehir Lake. Metal levels were analysed in only the muscle tissue of the fish, because this provides information on the potential risk to the fish themselves and to consumers of these edible portions of the fish. The Cu concentration was the highest in all the samples of the lake's sediments and waters, studied in all seasons, and ranged between 24.01 microg g(-1) (in spring) and 90.30 microg g(-1) (in summer), but Cu concentrations in T. tinca were low: 0.03 microg g(-1) (in summer) to 0.21 microg g(-1) (in spring). Metal concentrations in sediments, waters and tench varied seasonally. All metal concentrations in sediments were higher than those in water and fish. However, all metal concentrations, except Zn, were lowest in fish muscle tissue.

Study of canal sediments contaminated with heavy metals: fungal versus bacterial bioleaching techniques

Filamentous fungi and lithotrophic bacteria were used to leach heavy metals from dredged sediments in semi-pilot scale air-lift bioreactors. A preliminary physico-chemical characterization of the sediments comprising a sequential extraction study revealed their high metallic contamination and a predominant association of the metals with sulphides and organic matter. The mobility of heavy metals from sediments was ranked by decreasing order as follows: Mn > Zn > Cd > Cu > Pb. The conditions that favoured the solubilization of heavy metals by filamentous fungi turned out to be also favourable for the activity of the sediment organotrophic bacteria. The latter produced organic acids under temporary hypoxic conditions and resulted in the solubilization of 77% of manganese, 44% of zinc, 12% of copper, and less than 2% of cadmium or lead. In general, the fungal organotrophic treatments were limited to the relatively mobile metals due to the weak nature of the organic acids produced and to their microbial consumption under limited saccharose conditions. The lithotrophic treatments yielded higher solubilization results than the organotrophic experiments. Sulphur resulted in a faster, and for some metals such as copper and cadmium, in better bioleaching results compared with reduced iron or with a combination of reduced iron and sulphur. The bioleaching percentages varied between 72 and 93% for cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc, except for lead because of the poor solubility of lead sulphate. The sediment's lithotrophic bacteria acidified the matrix through sulphur oxidation, and leached both loosely and tightly bound metals.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals from the surficial sediments of a shallow coastal lagoon, Egypt

Sediment quality of Lake Maryout (one of the four Nile Delta shallow brackish water lakes on the south-eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea) is of concern as this lake is used for land reclamation and aquaculture and is an important fishing source. The magnitude and ecological relevance of metal pollution in Lake Maryout Main Basin was investigated by applying different sediment quality assessment approaches. The aim of this study was to estimate ecological risk of trace elements (Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr, Cu and Zn) in the surficial sediments (<63 jtm fraction) of Lake Maryout. Heavily contaminated sediments were evaluated by the Sediment Quality Guideline (SQG) of the US Environmental Protection Agency. The degree of contamination (Cd) was estimated as very high for each site. Two sets of SQGs effect range-low/effect range-median values and threshold effect concentration (TEC) and probable effect concentration (PEC) values were used in this study. Sediments from each site were judged toxic when more of the PEC values exceeded EPA guidelines. Based on the geoaccumulation index (Ieo) of target trace elements, the Main Basin of Lake Maryout has to be considered as extremely polluted with Cd (Igeo > or =5), strongly polluted with Zn (2 < or = Igeo < or =3), moderately polluted with Cu (1 < or = Igeo < or = 2), unpolluted to moderately polluted with Cr and Pb (0 < or = Igeo < or = 1 for each) and unpolluted with Ni (Igeo < or = 0). Lake Maryout sediments had heavy accumulations of Cd, which apparently come from drains that include industrial and raw domestic wastes. Therefore, a sequential extraction technique was applied to assess the five fractions (exchangeable, metals bound to carbonate, acid-reducible, oxidizable-organic and residual) of Cd in surface sediments. The Cd concentration in most sampling stations was dominated by the non-resistant fraction (anthropogenic). The result showed that those stations located in the vicinity of municipal and mixed waste drains posed a high potential risk to fauna and flora of Maryout Lake.
