Abstract
A novel cold-water-soluble polysaccharide (CALP-1-1) was isolated and purified from Citrus aurantium L. Besides determining its in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor activities, its structure was characterised. The results reveal that CALP-1-1 mainly consists of Rha, Ara, Gal, GalA, and GlcA (molar ratio, 1:14.56:19.27:2.27:1.29) with three main linkages. Its average molecular weight was 2.04 × 103 kDa. Moreover, the triple helix structure of CALP-1-1 was proved by Congo-red and circular dichroism (CD). The in vitro experimental results demonstrate that CALP-1-1 significantly inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells with typical apoptotic features by inducing cell cycle arrest in the S phase. Furthermore, in vivo anti-tumor experiments suggest that CALP-1-1 could induce H22 solid tumor cells apoptosis and exhibit anti-tumor effects by protecting immune organs and intensifying the secretion of immune cells (macrophages, lymphocytes and NK cells). In conclusion, CALP-1-1 might be a promising component for cancer treatment.

Abstract
This study explored the structural properties and in vitro antioxidant activity of polysaccharide (RTP-1) from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa berry. The average molecular weight of RTP-1 is 11.638 kDa. Structural characterization revealed that the main chain of RTP-1 composed of 4,6)-β-D-Manp-(1 → and 6)-β-D-Manp-(1 → linkages, and the branched chain is the D-Galp-(1 → attached to the O-6 position of the glycan residue →4,6)-β-D-Manp-(1→). There is no triple helix structure in RTP-1. X-ray diffractometer results showed that RTP-1 is an amorphous semi-crystalline polymer with a characteristic "bun" shaped peak and a crystalline region at 20.42°. Atomic force microscopy results revealed that the average height of RTP-1 was 5.52 nm. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that RTP-1 exhibited a rough surface with numerous tiny pores. Thermo-gravimetry analysis and differential scanning colorimeter results revealed that RTP-1 was extremely thermally stable. The RTP-1 exhibited excellent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), and OH radical scavenging activity.

Abstract
Dietary polysaccharides, recognised as significant natural bioactive compounds, have demonstrated promising potential for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This review provides an overview of the biological properties and classification of polysaccharides, with particular emphasis on their extraction and purification methods. The paper then explores the diverse mechanisms by which polysaccharides exert their effects in CVD, including their antioxidant activity, protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury, anti-apoptotic properties, protection against diabetic cardiomyopathy, anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects, prevention of ventricular remodeling, and protection against vascular injury. Furthermore, this paper summarises the current status of clinical trials involving polysaccharides in CVD and analyzes the support and challenges posed by these studies for the practical application of polysaccharides. Finally, the major challenges facing the therapeutic use of polysaccharides in CVD are discussed, particularly the issues of low bioavailability and lack of standardized quality control. Through this review, we aimed to provide a reference and guidance for further research on and application of dietary polysaccharides in CVD.

Abstract
Impurities and isomerized polysaccharides affect the analytical accuracy of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) structure and bioactivity, hindering their application in food and medicine. Preparing homogeneous GAGs components is essential for exploring structure-potency relationships and facilitating industrial production. This review primarily summarizes research on animal-derived GAGs preparation over the past five years, standardizing the preparation process into four operational units: pre-extraction treatment, extraction of crude polysaccharides, refinement of crude polysaccharides, and separation of GAGs components. Analyzed for scientific research and industrial production, the principles and application conditions of traditional means and novel techniques to preparing GAGs are comprehensively emphasized, exploring the effects of different treatments on biological activity and structure. Current challenges and development trends are illuminated. This review aims to lay a foundation for the in-depth study of GAGs structure, bioactivity, and function, providing theoretical references for the comprehensive utilization of animal raw materials and the development of animal polysaccharide deep-processing industries.

Abstract
Food allergy poses a great challenge to food safety and public health worldwide. Currently, clinical symptoms are primarily managed with medications, which can lead to drug resistance, adverse effects, and disruptions in gut flora balance. As a result, there has been a focus on researching safe and effective anti-allergic natural ingredients. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of food allergy mechanisms, methods of assessment of anti-food allergy studies, and a classification of natural substances with anti-allergic properties. It also examines the anti-allergic effects of these substances on food allergies and investigates gut microbiota changes induced by these natural bioactives, highlighting their significance to food allergies.Natural actives with anti-food allergic properties may alleviate allergic reactions through multiple targets and pathways. These mechanisms include promoting a shift in the Th1/Th2 balance, reducting IgE synthesis, preventing cellular degranulation and reducing the release of allergic mediator. The gut environment is closely related to food allergy and there is a significant interaction between the two. By targeting the intestinal flora, we can adopt dietary interventions to effectively address and control food allergies. This provides valuable insights for the future development of functional foods targeting the alleviation of food allergies.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia (HUA) is one of the major threats to human health. In recent years, with the gradual increase in the incidence rate of Hua, the prevention and treatment of HUA has attracted more and more attention. Clinical pharmaceutical interventions, such as Allopurinol, Febuxostat, and so on, though effective, are usually accompanied by notable adverse effects. Therefore, alternative therapy with high-safety natural components has received more and more attention from scholars. The natural polysaccharides showed a significant potential in HUA therapy and more and more natural polysaccharides for treating HUA were being obtained. Therefore, in this review, the recent progress on natural polysaccharides in preventing HUA was presented focusing on the sources, classification, and biological activities (oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory, and UA-lowering) of natural polysaccharides. Furthermore, this review explores the mechanisms of action and application. It is beneficial to the development of polysaccharides for natural HUA therapy and the results of this review could offer guidance on preventing the occurrence of HUA in daily life.

Abstract
Oats (Avena sativa L.) are an important cereal crop with diverse applications in both food and forage. Oat β-glucan has gained attention for its beneficial biological activities, such as reducing cardiovascular risk, preventing diabetes, and enhancing intestinal health. Despite its potential, more comprehensive research is required to explore its preparation, modification, bioactivities, and applications. This review highlights recent advancements in the determination and preparation of oat β-glucan, explores its biological activities and mechanisms, and examines the impact of food processing techniques on its properties. This review is intended to provide a theoretical foundation and reference for the development and application of oat β-glucan in the functional food industry.

Abstract
The Paeonia genus, the most distinctive representative of the Paeoniaceae family, holds significant edible and medicinal value. Its plants are rich in chemical constituents, including polysaccharides, phenols, terpenes, and flavonoids. Among these, Paeonia polysaccharide (PPS) is a key bioactive component, exhibiting diverse biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-depressant, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, immunomodulatory activities and therapeutical effect of diabetic kidney disease. Additionally, PPS possess favorable physicochemical properties including low toxicity and high biocompatibility. Recent studies increasingly demonstrate that PPS can enhance the sensory quality of food products during processing, and confer specific functional benefits through targeted biological activities indicating substantial potential for application in the food industry. The biological activity, emulsifying capacity, and film-forming properties of PPS also render them promising additives in cosmetic formulations, suggesting opportunities for further development. Despite their potential, challenges remain, particularly in optimizing extraction and purification techniques to improve PPS yield and preserve bioactivity. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the latest research advancements and future prospects is essential to deepen the understanding and facilitate the development of PPS.

Abstract
Global food systems are currently facing great challenges, such as food sources, food safety, and environmental crises. Alternative nutritional resources have been proposed as part of the solution to meeting future global food demand. In the natural resources, shellfish are the major component of global aquatic animals. Although most studies focus on the allergy, toxin, and contamination of shellfish, it is also a delicious food to the human diet rich in proteins, polysaccharides, minerals, and omega-3. Among the functional ingredients, shellfish polysaccharides possess nutritional and medicinal values that arouse the great interest of researchers. The selection of the extraction approach and the experimental condition are the key factors that influence the extraction efficiency of shellfish polysaccharides. Importantly, the purification of crude polysaccharides comprises the enrichment of shellfish polysaccharides and isolation of fractions, also resulting in various structural characteristics and physicochemical properties. Chemical modification is also an efficient method to further improve the biological activities of shellfish polysaccharides. This review summarizes the extraction, purification, structural characterization, and chemical modification methods for shellfish polysaccharides. Additionally, the beneficial health effects of shellfish polysaccharides are highlighted, with an emphasis on their potential mechanism. Finally, current challenges and perspectives on shellfish polysaccharides are also spotlighted.

Abstract
Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. (C. morifolium), as a traditional ornamental plant, it has multiple values, including edible, economic, nutritional and even medicinal values, which is used as herbal medicine and a new food resource in the world. Polysaccharides are one of the main bioactive components in C. morifolium, which have various health benefits such as improving functional constipation, improving colitis, anti-glycosylation, antioxidant, anti-angiogenesis, immunomodulation, prebiotic, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities. This paper describes the extraction, purification, structural characteristics, health benefits, structural-activity relationships, applications, and analyses the shortcomings of the major relevant studies exist on C. morifolium polysaccharides. In addition, the potential mechanisms of the health benefits of C. morifolium polysaccharides were summarized. This study can provide reference and direction for further research and development of C. morifolium polysaccharides.

Abstract
Polysaccharides from sea cucumbers are known for their biological activities, but little is known about those from sea cucumber viscera. The present study isolated a sulfated polysaccharide (SCVP-2) from the viscera of Apostichopus japonicas, which had a molecular weight of 209.1 kDa. SCVP-2 comprised 66.3 % total sugars, 2.1 % uronic acid, 4.5 % proteins, and 25.5 % sulfate groups, containing glucosamine, galactosamine, glucose, galactose, and fucose. FT-IR and NMR analyses identified SCVP-2 as a fucoidan sulfate with sulfation patterns of the fucose branches as Fuc2S, Fuc4S, and Fuc0S. SEM and AFM analyses showed irregular clusters and linear conformations. SCVP-2 demonstrated strong anti-inflammatory properties both in vitro and in vivo. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in macrophage RAW264.7 cells, SCVP-2 significantly reduced nitric oxide (NO) and cytokine secretion (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α). Additionally, it downregulated the expression of these cytokine genes. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory mechanism of SCVP-2 was related to the inhibition of the MAPKs and NF-κB pathways. SCVP-2's anti-inflammatory capacity was confirmed in acute inflammation models, including xylene-induced ear swelling and acetic acid-induced peritoneal capillary permeability, and in high-fat diet-induced systemic low-grade chronic inflammation. In conclusion, SCVP-2 exhibits significant anti-inflammatory activity, suggesting its potential for development as a functional food ingredient or therapeutic agent for inflammation-related diseases.

Abstract
Searching for natural products with anti-tumor activity is an important aspect of cancer research. Seaweed polysaccharides from brown seaweed have shown promising anti-tumor activity; however, their structure, composition, and biological activity vary considerably, depending on many factors. In this study, 16 polysaccharide fractions were extracted and purified from three large brown seaweed species (Sargassum horneri, Scytosiphon lomentaria, and Undaria pinnatifida). The chemical composition analysis revealed that the polysaccharide fractions have varying molecular weights ranging from 8.889 to 729.67 kDa, and sulfate contents ranging from 0.50% to 10.77%. Additionally, they exhibit different monosaccharide compositions and secondary structures. Subsequently, their anti-tumor activity was compared against five tumor cell lines (A549, B16, HeLa, HepG2, and SH-SY5Y). The results showed that different fractions exhibited distinct anti-tumor properties against tumor cells. Flow cytometry and cytoplasmic fluorescence staining (Hoechst/AO staining) further confirmed that these effective fractions significantly induce tumor cell apoptosis without cytotoxicity. qRT-RCR results demonstrated that the polysaccharide fractions up-regulated the expression of Caspase-3, Caspase-8, Caspase-9, and Bax while down-regulating the expression of Bcl-2 and CDK-2. This study comprehensively compared the anti-tumor activity of polysaccharide fractions from large brown seaweed, providing valuable insights into the potent combinations of brown seaweed polysaccharides as anti-tumor agents.

Abstract
Derived from bountiful marine organisms (predominantly algae, fauna, and microorganisms), marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides are intricate macromolecules that play a significant role in the growth and development of marine life. Recently, considerable attention has been paid to marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides as auspicious natural products due to their promising biological attributes. Herein, we provide an overview of recent advances in the miscellaneous biological activities of marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides that encompasses their anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-diabetes mellitus, and anticoagulant properties. Furthermore, we furnish a concise summary of the underlying mechanisms governing the behavior of these biological macromolecules. We hope that this review inspires research on marine polysaccharides and marine oligosaccharides in medicinal applications while offering fresh perspectives on their broader facets.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) are major components of the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria. In this work, the structure of the O-polysaccharide of Ochrobactrum quorumnocens T1Kr02 was identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the physical-chemical properties and biological activity of LPS were also investigated. The NMR analysis showed that the O-polysaccharide has the following structure: →2)-β-d-Fucf-(1→3)-β-d-Fucp-(1→. The structure of the periplasmic glucan coextracted with LPS was established by NMR spectroscopy and chemical methods: →2)-β-d-Glcp-(1→. Non-stoichiometric modifications were identified in both polysaccharides: 50% of d-fucofuranose residues at position 3 were O-acetylated, and 15% of d-Glcp residues at position 6 were linked with succinate. This is the first report of a polysaccharide containing both d-fucopyranose and d-fucofuranose residues. The fatty acid analysis of the LPS showed the prevalence of 3-hydroxytetradecanoic, hexadecenoic, octadecenoic, lactobacillic, and 27-hydroxyoctacosanoic acids. The dynamic light scattering demonstrated that LPS (in an aqueous solution) formed supramolecular particles with a size of 72.2 nm and a zeta-potential of -21.5 mV. The LPS solution (10 mkg/mL) promoted the growth of potato microplants under in vitro conditions. Thus, LPS of O. quorumnocens T1Kr02 can be recommended as a promoter for plants and as a source of biotechnological production of d-fucose.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are biomolecules found in microorganisms, plants, and animals that constitute living organisms. Glycosaminoglycans, unique acidic polysaccharides in animal connective tissue, are often combined with proteins in the form of covalent bonds due to their potent biological activity, low toxicity, and minimal side effects, which have the potential to be utilized as nutrition healthcare and dietary supplements. Existing studies have demonstrated that the bioactivity of polysaccharides is closely dependent on their structure and chain conformation. The characteristic functional groups and primary structure directly determine the strength of activity. However, the relationship between structure and function is still unclear, and the target and mechanism of action are not fully understood, resulting in limited clinical applications. As a result, the clinical applications of these polysaccharides are currently limited. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the extraction methods, structures, and biological activities of animal-derived polysaccharides that have been discovered so far. The aim is to promote developments in animal active polysaccharide science and provide theoretical support for exploring other unknown natural products.

Abstract
Polysaccharides, as biological macromolecules, are widely found in plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria and exhibit various biological activities. However, many natural polysaccharides exhibit low or non-existent biological activities because of their high molecular weights and poor water solubility, limiting their application in many fields. Sulfonation is one of the most effective chemical modification methods to improve physicochemical properties and biological activities of natural polysaccharides or even impart natural polysaccharides with new biological activities. Therefore, sulfonated polysaccharides have attracted increasing attention because of their antioxidant, anticoagulant, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties. This paper reviews the recent advances in the sulfonation of polysaccharides, including preparation, characterization, and biological activities of sulfonated polysaccharides, and provides a theoretical basis for wide applications of sulfonated polysaccharides.

Abstract
Active polysaccharides are extensively utilized in the fields of food and medicine because of their rich functional properties and structural plasticity. However, there are still few systematic studies and reviews on active polysaccharides for allergy. Allergy, especially food allergy, occurs frequently around the world and is related to a variety of factors such as age, genetics and dietary habits. Currently in medicine, avoiding allergens and desensitizing can effectively relieve allergy symptoms, but these are difficult to maintain over the long term and come with risks. Based on the supplementation of dietary nutrition to these two treatments, it has been discovered in recent years that the use of active ingredients from natural substances can effectively intervene in allergies. Considering the potential of active polysaccharides in this regard, we systematically characterize the latent patterns of polysaccharides in allergic symptoms and pathogenesis, including the aspects of gut, immunomodulatory, oxidative stress and signaling pathways, as well as the application prospect of them in allergy. It can be found that active polysaccharides have excellent anti-allergic potential, especially from the ocean. We believe that the active polysaccharides are associated with the treatment of allergic diseases, which may provide the benefits to allergy sufferers in the future.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are widely distributed in natural sources from monocytic microorganisms to higher animals, and are found in a variety of biological activities in recent decades. Natural polysaccharides have the characteristics of large molecular weight, diverse composition, and complex structure, so their purification and structural analysis are difficult issues in research. Chromatography as a powerful separation technique, plays an irreplaceable role in the separation and structural analysis of natural polysaccharides, especially in the purification of polysaccharides, the separation of hydrolysates, and the analysis of monosaccharide composition. The separation mechanisms and application of different chromatographic methods in the studies of polysaccharides were summarized in this review. Moreover, the advantages and drawbacks of various chromatography methods were discussed as well.

Abstract
Bioactive polysaccharides such as glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) exhibit potential health benefits for several health complications including obesity. The gut microbiota plays a key role in regulating host metabolism, nutrition and immunity. The present work assessed the potential of extracted GAGs (e-GAGs) in maintaining the gut microbiota and ameliorating the effects of high fat diet in in vitro and in vivo models. The in vitro fermentability of e-GAGs extracted from mackerel fish waste was analyzed with Lactobacillus plantarum (LP) and Bifidobacterium bifidum (BB); e-GAGs at 0.5 and 1% proved their prebiotic nature up to 48 h. The pH value decreased from 6.23 to 3.32, the cell density increased from 1.70 to 2.32, the viable cell count increased from 8 to 12 log CFU mL-1, and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production was ≈33, 31 and 36% for LP and ≈37, 29 and 34% for BB in terms of acetic acid, propionic acid and butyric acid, respectively. In vivo studies on high fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 mice with e-GAGs (380 and 760 mg kg-1 diet) showed ameliorated gut microbiome and tissue/plasma antioxidant enzyme activities, and also the e-GAG-fed group showed significantly (P < 0.05) decreased lipid peroxidation. Cecal microbial analysis showed the health-promoting effects of e-GAGs in reducing (P < 0.05) the obesity ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes (F/B) within the range (5.32 and 5.26) compared with HFD (6.23). Hence, e-GAGs can be a potential molecule for the treatment of obesity by restoring the redox status under oxidative stress and ameliorating the gut microbes that produce SCFAs which are known to have health beneficial effects.

Abstract
Althaea officinalis Linn. (AO) is a widely distributed herbaceous plant with a long history of medicinal and food functions in Europe and Western Asia. Althaea officinalis polysaccharide (AOP), as one of the main components and a crucial bioactive substance of AO, has a variety of pharmacological activities, including antitussive, antioxidant, antibacterial, anticancer, wound healing, immunomodulatory, and infertility therapy effects. Many polysaccharides have been successfully obtained in the last five decades from AO. However, there is currently no review available concerning AOP. Considering the importance of AOP for biological study and drug discovery, the present review aims to systematically summarize the recent major studies on extraction and purification methods of polysaccharides from different AO parts (seeds, roots, leaves and flowers), as well as the characterization of their chemical structure, biological activity, structure-activity relationship, and the application of AOP in different fields. Meanwhile, the shortcomings of AOP research are further discussed in detail, and new valuable insights for future AOP research as therapeutic agents and functional foods are proposed.

Abstract
Many bioactive compounds are reported from marine organisms, which are significantly different from those found in terrestrial organisms regarding their chemical structures and pharmacological activities. Marine glycoproteins (MGs) have aroused increasing attention as a good nutrient source owing to their potential applications in medicine, cosmetics and food. However, there is a lack of a comprehensive study on MGs to help readers understand the current state of research on marine-derived glycoproteins. The current review compiles the recent progress made on the structures and functions of MGs with future perspectives to maximize their value and applications via bibliometric analysis methods for the first time. The current research on MGs appears mostly limited to the laboratory, with no large-scale production of marine glycoproteins developed. The sugar chains are bound to proteins through covalent bonds that can readily be cleaved leading to difficultly in their separation and purification. Health effects attributed to MGs include treatment of inflammatory diseases, as well as anti-oxidant, immune modulation, anti-tumor, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-bacterial and anti-freeze activities. This review can not only deepen the understanding of the functions of MGs, but also lay an important foundation for the further development and utilization of marine resources.

Abstract
Phellinus linteus (P. linteus) is a famous Chinese medicine and has a long history in China. In recent years, P. linteus polysaccharides (PLPs) have attracted extensive attention because of their biological activities such as anti-bacteria, anti-aging, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, hepatoprotective effect and hypoglycemic effect. In this review, we systemically summarized the advances in extractions, purifications and structural characterizations of PLPs, and also analyzed their biological functions and molecular mechanisms. Meanwhile, the structure-activity relationships of PLPs are closely related to their anti-oxidation and anti-tumor activities. So far, the applications of PLPs are still very limited, further exploring structure-activity relationships, biological functions and their mechanisms of PLPs will promote to develop functional foods.

Abstract
Sea cucumber sulfated polysaccharide (SCSPsj) is one of the dietary components which effectively modulates gut microbiota; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, the interaction between SCSPsj and its utilizer (Parabacteroides distasonis) was investigated. Further study was carried out to explore the cross-feeding between intestinal Bacteroidales mediated by SCSPsj. The results revealed that SCSPsj can be fermented by P. distasonis to produce various microbial metabolites, including organic acids and derivatives, lipids and lipid-like molecules, organoheterocyclic compounds. SCSPsj can regulate the succinate pathway and acetyl-CoA pathway to influence the production of propanoic acid and acetic acid, respectively. Moreover, the SCSPsj-fermented supernatants of P. distasonis can only promote the growth of B. stercoris, B. vulgatus and P. johnsonii among 8 intestinal Bacteroidales strains through cross-feeding. The effect of cross-feeding was related to spatial distances and bacterial species. Moreover, the cross-feeding was correlated with compounds belonging to organic acids and derivatives, lipids and lipid-like molecules. These findings could provide new insights into the interaction between SCSPsj and gut microbiota.

Abstract
Many chronic diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases are closely related to in vivo oxidative stress caused by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). Natural polysaccharides, as a kind of biomacromolecule with good biocompatibility, have been widely used in biomedical and medicinal applications due to their superior antioxidant properties. In this review, scientometric analysis of the highly cited papers in the Web of Science (WOS) database finds that antioxidant activity is the most widely studied and popular among pharmacological effects of natural polysaccharides. The antioxidant mechanisms of natural polysaccharides mainly contain the regulation of signal transduction pathways, the activation of enzymes, and the scavenging of free radicals. We continuously discuss the antioxidant activities of natural polysaccharides and their derivatives. At the same time, we summarize their applications in the field of pharmaceutics/drug delivery, tissue engineering, and antimicrobial food additives/packaging materials. Overall, this review provides up-to-date information for the further development and application of natural polysaccharides with antioxidant activities.

Abstract
The high-valued utilization of Ulva (previously known as Enteromorpha) bioresources has drawn increasing attention due to the periodic blooms of world-wide green tide. The polysaccharide is the main functional component of Ulva and exhibits various physiological activities. The Ulva oligosaccharide as the degradation product of polysaccharide not only possesses some obvious activities, but also possesses excellent solubility and bioavailability. Both Ulva polysaccharides and oligosaccharides hold promising potential in the food industry as new functional foods or food additives. Studies on Ulva polysaccharides and oligosaccharides are increasing and have been the focus of the marine bioresources field. However, the comprehensive review of this topic is still rare and do not cover the recent advances of the structure, isolation, preparation, activity and applications of Ulva polysaccharides and oligosaccharides. This review systematically summarizes and discusses the recent advances of chemical composition, extraction, purification, structure, and activity of Ulva polysaccharides as well as oligosaccharides. In addition, the potential applications as new functional food and food additives have also been considered, and these will definitely expand the applications of Ulva oligosaccharides in the food and medical fields.

Abstract
Sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus has been consumed as high-valued seafood in Asian, and its sulfated polysaccharide (SCSPsj) has been inferred to benefit the host health via modulating gut microbiota composition. The present study compared the responses of gut microbiota communities from different donors to SCSPsj, and the key bacteria were identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis and in vitro fermentation with specific bacteria. Gut microbiota communities from 6 donors (A ~ F) utilized the polysaccharides to different degrees in vitro fermentation. Further comparison of Samples A and C demonstrated that Sample C with the relatively strong SCSPsj utilization capability possessed more Parabacteroides while Sample A contained more Bacteroides. Further in vitro fermentation of SCSPsj with 10 Parabacteroides and Bacteroides species suggests that Parabacteroides distasonis, enriched in Sample C, plays a critical role in the utilization of the polysaccharides. Moreover, short chain fatty acids and the metabolite profiles of Samples A and C were also compared, and the results showed that more beneficial metabolites were accumulated by the microbiota community consuming more sulfated sea cucumber polysaccharides. Our findings revealed that certain key members of gut microbiota, such as Parabacteroides distasonis, are critical for SCSPsj utilization in gut so as to influence the benefits of the polysaccharide supplement for host. Thus, to obtain better functional outcome for sulfated sea cucumber polysaccharides and sea cucumber, more attention needs to be paid to the effects of inter-individual differences in microbiota community structure.

Abstract
Crude anionic polysaccharides extracted from the Pacific starfish Lysastrosoma anthosticta were separated by anion-exchange chromatography into fractions LA-F1 and LA-F2. The main fraction LA-F1 was solvolytically desulfated giving rise to preparation LA-F1-DS with a structure of dermatan core [→3)-β-d-GalNAc-(1→4)-α-l-IdoA-(1→]n. Reduction of LA-F1 afforded preparation LA-F1-RED composed mainly of the repeating disaccharide units →3)-β-d-GalNAc4R-(1→4)-α-l-Ido2S3S-(1→, where R was SO3- or H. Analysis of the NMR spectra of the parent fraction LA-F1 led to determine the main component as the oversulfated dermatan sulfate LA-Derm bearing sulfate groups at O-2 and O-3 of α-l-iduronic acid, as well as at O-4 of some N-acetyl-d-galactosamine residues. The minor fraction LA-F2 contained a mixture of LA-Derm and heparinoid LA-Hep, the latter being composed of the fragments →4)-α-d-GlcNS3S6S-(1→4)-α-l-IdoA2S3S-(1→ and →4)-α-d-GlcNS3S-(1→4)-α-l-IdoA2S3S-(1→. The presence of 2,3-di-O-sulfated iduronic acid residues is very unusual both for natural dermatan sulfate and heparinoid. Preparations LA-F1, LA-F2 and LA-F1-RED demonstrated significant anticoagulant effect in vitro.

Abstract
The human diet is temporally and spatially dynamic, and influenced by culture, regional food systems, socioeconomics, and consumer preference. Such factors result in enormous structural diversity of ingested glycans that are refractory to digestion by human enzymes. To convert these glycans into metabolizable nutrients and energy, humans rely upon the catalytic potential encoded within the gut microbiome, a rich collective of microorganisms residing in the gastrointestinal tract. The development of high-throughput sequencing methods has enabled microbial communities to be studied with more coverage and depth, and as a result, cataloging the taxonomic structure of the gut microbiome has become routine. Efforts to unravel the microbial processes governing glycan digestion by the gut microbiome, however, are still in their infancy and will benefit by retooling our approaches to study glycan structure at high resolution and adopting next-generation functional methods. Also, new bioinformatic tools specialized for annotating carbohydrate-active enzymes and predicting their functions with high accuracy will be required for deciphering the catalytic potential of sequence datasets. Furthermore, physiological approaches to enable genotype-phenotype assignments within the gut microbiome, such as fluorescent polysaccharides, has enabled rapid identification of carbohydrate interactions at the single cell level. In this review, we summarize the current state-of-knowledge of these methods and discuss how their continued development will advance our understanding of gut microbiome function.

Abstract
Naturally occurring polysaccharide sulfates are highly diverse, owning variations in the backbone structure, linkage pattern and stereochemistry, branching diversity, sulfate content and positions of sulfate group(s). These structural characteristics bring about diverse sulfated polymers with dissimilar negative charge densities and structure-activity relationships. Herein, we start with a short discussion of techniques needed for extraction, purification, chemical sulfation, and structural characterization of polysaccharides. Processes of isolation and sulfation of plant-derived polysaccharides are challenging and usually involve two steps. In this context, we describe an integrated extraction-sulfation procedure that produces polysaccharide sulfates from natural products in one step, thereby generating additional pharmacological activities. Finally, we provide examples of the spectrum of natural source-derived polysaccharides possessing specific features of bioactivity, in particular focusing on current aspects of antiviral drug development and drug-target interaction. Thus, the review presents a detailed view on chemically engineered polysaccharides, especially sulfated derivatives, and underlines their promising biomedical perspectives.

Abstract
Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (P. ginseng) has a long history of medicinal use and can treat a variety of diseases. P. ginseng contains a variety of active ingredients, such as saponins, polypeptides, volatile oils, and polysaccharides. Among them, saponins have always been considered as the main components responsible for its pharmacological activities. However, more and more studies have shown that polysaccharides play an indispensable role in the medicinal value of ginseng. Modern biological and medical studies have found that ginseng polysaccharides have complex structural characteristics and diverse biological activities, such as immune regulation, anti-tumor, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, and anti-radiation functions, among others. Additionally, the structural characteristics of ginseng polysaccharides are closely related to their activity. In this review, the research background, extraction, purification, structural characteristics, and biological activities of ginseng polysaccharides from different parts of P. ginseng (roots, flowers stems and leaves, and berries) under different growth conditions (artificially cultivated ginseng, mountain ginseng, and wild ginseng) are summarized. The structural characteristics of purified polysaccharides were reviewed. Meanwhile, their biological activities were introduced, and some possible mechanisms were listed. Furthermore, the structure-activity relationship of polysaccharides was discussed. Some research perspectives for the study of ginseng polysaccharides were also provided.

BACKGROUND Based on the consumers' attention issues of sea cucumbers, we aimed to complete comprehensive information of commercial Canadian sea cucumbers (CCSC), which sprang up extensively in Chinese food market. RESULTS CCSC were identified as Cucumaria frondosa and characterized based on the characteristics, nutritional compositions, and heavy metals. The abdomen and five internal tendons of Cucumaria frondosa were special orange. The average of soaking degree and water content, which consumers paid great attention to, was 2.8 ± 0.3 and 0.46 ± 0.09%, respectively. Proteins (56.4 ± 9.1%) and polysaccharides (12.2 ± 14.7%) were the principal nutrient component. In addition, there was a variety of free amino acids, in which arginine (70.1 ± 50.0 mg/100 g), glutamate (42.6 ± 23.9 mg/100 g), and alanine (32.2 ± 21.0 mg/100 g) were the main components. Phosphorus (P, 0.26 ± 0.05%), magnesium (Mg, 0.19 ± 0.07%), and kalium (K, 0.17 ± 0.08%) were the major mineral elements. Amount of heavy metal was within the safety limitation (5.5 ± 1.4 mg/kg). Furthermore, the active ingredients were positively correlated with size. CONCLUSION The overall findings enriched the information of Cucumaria frondosa for consumers and suggested that the quality of Cucumaria frondosa was varied following commercial classification and size.

Abstract
The aim of this paper was to investigate the extraction, purification and characterization of sulphated polysaccharide (BQPS) from Bellamya quadrata and its stabilization roles on atherosclerotic plaque. Firstly, crude polysaccharide (CBQP) from Bellamya quadrata was extracted by protease enzyme assisted extraction. Moreover, its optimal parameters were obtained by the response surface method as follows: the ratio of water to raw material of 24:1, enzyme dosage of 285 U/g, enzymolysis pH value of 4.7 and temperature of 67 °C. Secondly, CBQP was further purified to obtain the target polysaccharide BQPS by Q Sepharose Fast Flow and Sephacryl S-400 gel column chromatography. Then, the characterization of BQPS revealed that it possessed a total polysaccharide content of 91.88 ± 1.23%, sulfuric acid group content of 9.12 ± 1.59% and molecular weight of 91.1 kDa. BQPS was only consisted of glucose without any proteins. Finally, BQPS was confirmed to have a significant stabilizing effect on atherosclerotic plaque and its mechanism was related to the selective promotion of autophagy with the precisely right strength.

Abstract
As a fungal polysaccharide, polysaccharide (PPUS) from Polyporus umbellatus sclerotia have showed remarkable anti-inflammatory activities. In view of the closely relationship between inflammation and renal fibrosis, and considering the significant role of other fungal polysaccharides on treatment of renal fibrosis, we speculated that PPUS may have therapeutic effects on renal fibrosis. However, there was not any reports about PPUS treatment this disease. The purpose of this paper is to investigate renoprotective effect and mechanism of PPUS on renal fibrosis. The results indicated that PPUS can improve renal function and ameliorate the degree of renal collagen deposition and further fibrosis. Its mechanism was found to be related with decreased inflammation, suppressive epithelial-mesenchymal transition, reconstructed the balance of matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases, and pro-fibrotic and anti-fibrotic factors. The data implied that PPUS can serve as a clinical candidate on treatment of renal interstitial fibrosis.
