Can psychological capital promote safety behaviours? A systematic review

Psychological capital educational program and its effect on nurse interns' innovative behavior

BACKGROUND

Nurse interns' capacity for innovative behavior is a key component of healthcare settings because of increasing demands and complexities. Thus, it is important to find strategies that promote their innovative behavior. The development of psychological capital (PsyCap) improves positive behaviors and attitudes, such as engagement, motivation, and satisfaction, in the work environment. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of a PsyCap educational program on nurse interns' innovative behavior.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. This study was executed at Fayoum University hospitals. The study participants comprised all the available nurse interns (n = 223) registered in the internship year (2022-2023) in the aforementioned settings. The data were gathered using three instruments, namely, the PsyCap Knowledge Questionnaire, the PsyCap Questionnaire, and the Innovative Behavior Inventory.

RESULTS

The nurse interns' mean scores regarding total knowledge about PsyCap, total perception of PsyCap, and total perception of innovative behavior significantly improved through the posttest phase (41.27 ± 9.31, 92.22 ± 6.26, 91.31 ± 9.06, respectively) and the follow-up phase (37.83 ± 8.83, 89.96 ± 6.31, 88.89 ± 8.33) in comparison with the pretest phase (14.39 ± 5.83, 69.04 ± 8.13, 60.55 ± 7.15).

CONCLUSION

The PsyCap educational program was effective and beneficial for improving the nurse interns' perceptions of innovative behavior. Therefore, PsyCap interventions should be implemented in hospitals through professional development programs and orientation programs.

Psychological capital research in HEIs: Bibliometric analysis of current and future trends

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on psychological capital (PsyCap) within higher education institutions (HEIs). Its main objective is to offer an encompassing perspective on this field's current state and potential developments. To achieve this, the study examines present research trends and predicts future directions using a bibliometric approach. A total of 412 journal articles were gathered from the Web of Science database. The analysis identifies influential publications, outlines the knowledge structure, and forecasts future trends through bibliographic coupling and co-word analyses. The bibliographic coupling revealed five distinct clusters, while the co-word analysis identified four clusters. Despite the growing significance of PsyCap research in HEIs, there remains a need for greater academic efforts to comprehend the research landscape fully. This paper provides valuable insights into the expanding area of PsyCap research within HEIs. In conclusion, the study sheds light on the extensive research conducted on PsyCap in the context of HEIs and offers insights into its potential for further growth.

Energizing Workplace Dynamics: Exploring the Nexus of Relational Energy, Humor, and PsyCap for Enhanced Engagement and Performance

This study delves into the dynamics of relational energy (RE) within an organizational context, examining some of its antecedents and decedents. Specifically, it investigates the influence of psychological capital (PsyCap) and humor on RE, and, subsequently, the latter's impact on job performance (JB) mediated by job engagement (JE). A research model based on structural equation modeling carried out with 481 employees in private service industries demonstrates several key relationships. It reveals that both PsyCap and affiliative humor positively affect RE, while aggressive humor exerts a negative influence. Furthermore, RE shows a positive association with JE and JP, with JE serving as a mediator. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to present an integrated model encompassing this exact combination of influencers and consequences of RE, as well as the first to be investigated within the Western Balkans cultural context. Therefore, it represents a novel approach. Additionally, the research addresses crucial questions regarding the existence and strategic significance of RE within organizational interactions. The findings offer valuable insights for organizations seeking to enhance employee engagement, performance, and wellbeing-even during health crises such as COVID-19-by fostering RE. This study advances the understanding of RE in organizational settings and provides a foundation for future research in this domain.

Do Resources Help or Hurt? The Critical Roles of Me, Others, and Organization in Mitigating Workplace Demands

Today's job demands-resources (JD-R) literature emphasizes the interactions between job demands and resources. However, the dynamism of JD-R processes in which individuals manage to counteract the detrimental effects of job demands on employees by flexibly adjusting resources calls this relationship into question. Hence, in this study, we depict JD-R dynamics in the workplace by developing a cross-level moderated-mediation model that unveils the different roles played by job and personal resources when they are woven together with job demands. We examine how and when the relationships among three types of resources-organizationally assigned high-performance work systems (HPWSs), psychological capital (PsyCap), and social support climate (SSC)-help employees deal with excessive workload and unhealthy emotional demands. Using a two-wave research design, we measured and tested the causal relationships of the proposed variables. We found that (1) HPWSs had a negative effect on workload, (2) workload provoked employee emotional demands, (3) the interaction between HPWSs and PsyCap increased workload, and (4) SSC mitigated the positive effect of workload on employee emotional demands. This study contributes to the JD-R theory and literature by unlocking the potential roles of various resources. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future research avenues are also presented.
