Abstract
Background Evidence regarding the association between metabolism-related indicators and serum urate (SU) is limited. We aimed to obtain the incidence density of hyperuricemia and to explore the association between metabolism-related predisposing risk factors and SU. Methods A total of 48,979 Chinese adults from the Beijing Physical Examination Center were included in the study. The partial least squares path model was used to explore the relationship between SU and metabolism-related risk factors. The generalized additive model was used for smooth curve fitting, showing the sex-specific associations of SU at follow-up with baseline fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations and age. Results The incidence density of hyperuricemia was 78/1000 person-years. Baseline SU, age, sex, obesity, FBG, and lipid metabolism were significantly associated with SU at follow-up (all P values <0.05). Non-linear relationships were found between the baseline FBG concentrations and SU at follow-up, while U-shaped associations were observed between baseline age and SU at follow-up. Conclusions The SU concentration is associated with several metabolism-related risk factors such as obesity and FBG. Recognition of these associations will aid in a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of SU regulation.

Abstract
Background Few studies have examined the relationship between fatty liver index (FLI) and hyperuricemia (HUA). This study explores the relationship between FLI and HUA in hypertensive patients. Methods A total of 13,716 hypertensive subjects were included in the current study. FLI, a simple index calculated from triglycerides (TG), waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and γ -glutamyltransferase (GGT), was used as a useful predictor of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) distribution. HUA was defined as serum uric acid ≥ 360 μmol/L for females and ≥ 420 μmol/L for males. Results The mean value of total FLI was 31.8 ± 25.1. Multiple logistic analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between FLI and HUA (OR, 1.78; 95% CI: 1.69-1.87). A subgroup analysis demonstrated that the correlation between FLI (< 30 vs. ≥ 30) and HUA was significant in both sexes (P for interaction = 0.006). Further analyses stratified by sex indicated a positive correlation between FLI and HUA prevalence among male and female subjects. However, the correlation between FLI and HUA was stronger in female subjects than in males (male: OR, 1.70; 95% CI: 1.58-1.83; female: 1.85; 95% CI: 1.73-1.98). Conclusion This study demonstrates a positive correlation between FLI and HUA in hypertensive adults, but stronger in females than males.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hyperuricaemia is closely related to metabolic diseases and is receiving increasing attention from all over the world. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricaemia in non-obese Chinese population. DESIGN Retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING A large general hospital that can provide health check-ups in Hangzhou, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 5731 apparently healthy Chinese adults (2349 men and 3382 women) who took their health check-ups during the year of 2019. EXCLUSION CRITERIA (1) those with body mass index ≥24 kg/m2; (2) those with incomplete anthropometric and biochemical data; (3) those with a history of malignancy and (4) those under urate-lowering treatment. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricaemia in non-obese Chinese adults. RESULTS Of the 5731 non-obese subjects enrolled, 538 (9.4%) were identified as having hyperuricaemia, specifically 16.3% in men and 4.6% in women. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia markedly increased in women aged above 50 years. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was significantly higher in metabolically unhealthy participants with normal weight than in metabolically healthy participants with normal weight. Participants with hyperuricaemia showed a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease than participants with normouraemia. Age, waist circumference, estimated glomerular filtration rate, blood urea nitrogen, excessive drinking and fatty liver were associated with hyperuricaemia in both genders. CONCLUSION The prevalence of hyperuricaemia was 9.4% in non-obese Chinese adults. Non-obese participants with hyperuricaemia also showed multiple metabolic disorders. We suggest that clinicians pay attention to serum uric acid level in non-obese patients.

Abstract
Previous observational studies have highlighted associations between adipokines and hyperuricemia, as well as gout, but the causality and direction of these associations are not clear. Therefore, we attempted to assess whether there are causal effects of specific adipokines (such as adiponectin (ADP) and soluble leptin receptors (sOB-R)) on uric acid (UA) or gout in a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, based on summary statistics from large genome-wide association studies. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was performed as the primary analysis. Sensitivity analyses (including MR-Egger regression, weighted median, penalized weighted median, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier methods) were also performed, to ensure reliable results. In the IVW models, no causal effect was found for sOB-R (odds ratios (OR), 1.002; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 0.999–1.004; p = 0.274) on UA, or ADP (OR, 1.198; 95% CI, 0.865–1.659; p = 0.277) or sOB-R (OR, 0.988; 95% CI, 0.940–1.037; p = 0.616) on gout. The results were confirmed in sensitivity analyses. There was no notable directional pleiotropy or heterogeneity. This study suggests that these specific adipokines may not play causal roles in UA or gout development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia (HUA) is becoming a global public health problem and associated with multiple diseases. OBJECTIVE We conducted a systematic review to synthesize the pooled prevalence of HUA in mainland China and delineate its demographic, regional, and temporal trends over the past two decades. METHODS Systematic literature searches of PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and the Wanfang digital database were conducted to screen studies published from 1 January 2000 to 31 August 2019, reporting the prevalence of HUA in mainland China. The search strings were ('hyperuricemia' OR 'hyperuricaemia' OR 'uric acid') AND ('prevalence' OR 'epidemiology') AND 'China'. Article quality was appraised quantitatively from 11 items. Before formal meta-analysis, age-standardized prevalence was transformed. The random-effects model was applied to synthesize the pooled prevalence due to its high heterogeneity. Then we stratified the prevalence estimates by age, gender, area, nationality, and publication year for subgroup analysis. RESULTS Totally 177 eligible studies with a whole population of 2,277,712 were included in the present meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence in mainland China was estimated at 16.4% (95% CI: 15.3%~17.6%). In studies with the onset age at 20 ~ 29 years old, males had a twice times higher HUA prevalence than females (21.5% vs. 8.9%). The prevalence of HUA was 13.7% (11.8%~15.7%) in people aged 15~ years old, 16.5% in 30~ (14.8%~18.4%), 17.9% in 40~ (16.4%~19.5%), 19.4% in 50~ (17.8%~21.0%), 20.5% in 60~ (18.8%~22.3%), and 24.9% in over 70 (22.9%~27.1%). Stratified by regions, southern (25.5%) and southwestern (21.2%) China shared the highest prevalence, and the lowest prevalence was observed in the northwest (12.6%). From 2001 to 2017, the prevalence estimates of HUA steadily climbed from 8.5% to 18.4% with minor fluctuations. Multiple regression revealed that HUA prevalence was positively correlated to the larger sample size, area, advanced onset age, and published year. CONCLUSIONS The last two decades witnessed the rapid growth prevalence of HUA in China. Early screening and personalized health education for HUA need to be given enough attention.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the end metabolic product of purine metabolism. Early on, UA was considered to be a metabolite with a certain antioxidant capacity. As research has progressed, other properties of UA have been explored, and its association with many diseases has been found. The association between UA and kidney disease and cardiovascular disease is well established; however, there is still a paucity of reviews on the association between UA and the female reproductive system. An increasing number of epidemiological studies have shown elevated serum UA levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, etc. Additionally, serum UA can be used as a predictor of pregnancy complications and adverse foetal outcomes. An increasing number of animal experiments and clinical studies have revealed possible mechanisms related to the involvement of UA in certain female reproductive disorders: oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, etc. This article reviews the current mainstream mechanisms regarding the pathogenesis of UA and the role of UA in certain specific female reproductive disorders (direct involvement in the development of certain diseases or enhancement of other risk factors) in the hope of contributing to clinical prevention, diagnosis, treatment and improvement in prognosis.

Abstract
Background
A growing body of evidence suggested that uric acid (UA) may contribute in the pathways underlying osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis; however, studies that investigated the relationship between UA and OA emerged inconclusive results. The purpose of the study was to explore the association of serum uric acid (sUA) levels with clinical severity, radiological severity of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) based on Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grading system, and MRI changes in non-gouty patients.
Results
WOMAC scores: pain, stiffness, function, and total score are significantly higher in H-sUA group than L-sUA group (p = 0.004, p = 0.019, p = 0.018, p = 0.008 respectively). Joint space width (JSW) is significantly narrower in H-sUA group than L-sUA group (p = 0.013). H-sUA group had more frequent KL grade 4 (p < 0.001), osteophytes grade 4 (p < 0.001), focal bone erosion (p < 0.001), bone marrow lesions (p = 0.023), and synovitis (p = 0.011) than L-sUA group. Female KOA patients in H-sUA group had significantly higher pain, stiffness, and function and total WOMAC scores than L-sUA group (p = 0.003, p = 0.015, p = 0.008, p = 0.004), more frequently had KL grade 4 and osteophytes grade 4 (p = 0.003, p < 0.001), significantly narrower JSW (p = 0.016), more frequently show focal bone erosion (p = 0.002), bone marrow lesions (p = 0.019), and synovitis (p = 0.004) than L-sUA group. In regression analysis, female sex (p = 0.035), duration of KOA (p = 0.031), and sUA level (p = 0.025) were associated with KL severity. For female patients with KOA, KL severity is associated with duration of KOA (p = 0.045) and sUA (p = 0.009).
Conclusion
Higher sUA level is associated with higher clinical severity, higher radiographic KL grades, and more frequent MRI findings in patients with primary KOA patients. Our results also indicated that sUA level was significantly associated with KOA severity in female patients, but not in male patients. More studies are warranted to explore whether the two conditions exist simultaneously or there is a direct causal relationship between the two conditions.

Abstract
Objectives: China has already entered the aging society, and its aging population is the largest worldwide. Accordingly, several aging-related conditions including hyperuricemia are becoming a public health concern owing to their increasing prevalence in rural areas. However, the sex-specific differences in the risk factors for hyperuricemia among the middle-aged and elderly in rural North China are unclear. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate sex-specific differences in the prevalence of and risk factors for hyperuricemia in low-income adults in rural North China. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study recruited participants aged ≥50 years from the Tianjin Brain Study between April and August 2019. After excluding those who had cancer, severe psychiatric disturbances, hepatic failure, and serious renal disease (i.e., an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of <30 mL/min/1.73 m2), 3119 (1392 men and 1727 women) eligible participants were included. Basic information and blood samples were collected, and data were analyzed using logistic regression models. Results: Hyperuricemia was prevalent in 14.4% (men, 14.2%; women, 14.5%)of the participants, and the prevalence significantly increased with increasing age in both sexes (male, P= 0.034; female, P< 0.001). In multivariate analysis, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and high levels of total cholesterol, 2 h plasma glucose, and blood urea nitrogen were risk factors for hyperuricemia in both men and women. Physical activity was a risk factor in men, while a high white blood cell count was a risk factor in women. A high eGFR was a protective factor in both sexes. Conclusions: Hyperuricemia was highly prevalent in low-income adults in Tianjin, with men and women showing differences in risk profiles and comorbidities. Early management of hyperuricemia according to sex-specific risk factors should be considered in primary care to reduce the prevalence and burden of hyperuricemia in rural China.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia has received increasing attention as a major public health problem. This study aims to investigate the risk factors for hyperuricemia and to explore the relationship between changes in biochemical variables and incident hyperuricemia.A cross-sectional and subsequently prospective study was performed among adults who took their health checkups at Zhejiang University Hospital. The participants who were free of hyperuricemia at baseline received annual follow-up examinations during a 6-year period. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were conducted to calculate the risks for incident hyperuricemia.Of the 9238 participants enrolled, 1704 (18.4%) were diagnosed as hyperuricemia. During 21,757 person-years of follow-up, 1492 incident hyperuricemia cases were identified. The incidence of hyperuricemia was 68.58 cases per 1000 person-year of follow-up in the overall participants. The prevalence and the incidence of hyperuricemia increased greatly in female older than 50 years. High levels of BMI, SBP, FPG, TG, LDL-C, ALT, BUN, and creatinine increased the risk of hyperuricemia. Suffering fatty liver also increased the risk of hyperuricemia. Subjects with increasing DBP, TG, BUN, creatinine, or decreasing HDL-C were more likely to incident hyperuricemia.This study revealed that the change of diastolic blood pressure (DBP), serum triglycerides (TG), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level were independently associated with incident hyperuricemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examines associations between the ESR1 (XbaI, PvuII) and the MLXIPL (rs3812316) gene polymorphisms, and uric acid (UA) levels in Slovak midlife women, subdivided according to their menopause status. METHODS We assessed a total of 362 women from 38 to 65 years of age. Women were recruited from different localities in the western and middle parts of Slovakia. Participants were interviewed during their medical examination at local health centers. They were investigated with respect to a variety of aspects such as medical, anthropometrical, and lifestyle. Participants provided a blood sample for biochemical analyses and DNA genotyping. The MLXIPL gene (rs3812316 SNP variant) and ESR1 gene (PvuII and XbaI) genotypes were then detected by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Data were analyzed using general linear models and multiple linear regression analyses to adjust for risk factors elevating the UA level such as fat mass (FM), triglycerides (TGs) and creatinine. RESULTS A positive association between MLXIPL and UA level was observed in the total sample of women after control for confounding covariates, including FM, TGs, and creatinine (P = 0.027). Women with the CC genotype had higher UA levels than the G-allele carriers (261.5 μmol/L ± 68.3 vs 241.1 μmol/L ± 55.1 P = 0.013). A statistically significant association was noticed between postmenopause status and the ESR1 XbaI genotype and their effect on UA (P = 0.028). The Bonferroni pairwise comparison determined that the G-allele carriers in the postmenopausal period had higher estimated UA marginal mean (269.7 μmol/L) than the AA-allele postmenopausal women (236.5 μmol/L) (P = 0.012). The estimated UA marginal mean showed a significant increasing trend according to the MS in G allele carriers (248.5 μmol/L in pre/peri-menopausal vs 269.7 μmol/L in postmenopausal, P = 0.009). In contrast, a decreasing trend was observed in AA carriers (250.6 μmol/L in pre/perimenopausal women vs 236.5 μmol/L in postmenopausal). However, this trend was not statistically significant (P = 0.288). CONCLUSIONS This cross-sectional study suggests that MLXIPL (rs3812316) polymorphism is associated with higher serum UA levels and that the ESR1 (XbaI) polymorphism is associated with UA levels only in the postmenopausal cohort.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid levels increase in postmenopausal women, but decrease when hormone therapy (HT) is administered. No study has, however, evaluated the effects of different types of HT on serum uric acid levels. We therefore examined whether estrogen therapy (ET), estrogen plus progestogen therapy (EPT), and tibolone use affected serum uric acid levels in this population. METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study of postmenopausal women. From 2005 to 2015, postmenopausal women who had undergone blood uric acid-level testing at least twice were enrolled. Participants were grouped according to HT regimen: ET, EPT, or tibolone. The nonhormone therapy group did not receive HT. Differences in serum uric acid levels were examined in each group. Our analysis was adjusted to accommodate different follow-up intervals for individual participants. Multiple variables were adjusted using the Tukey-Kramer method. Age, body mass index, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, estimated glomerular filtration rate, alcohol consumption, smoking status, and comedications were also adjusted. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple variables, the serum uric acid level increased to 0.87 ± 0.27 mg/dL (least squares mean ± standard error) in the nonhormone therapy group, and serum uric levels in the EPT group were found to be significantly lower (-0.38 ± 0.29 mg/dL, P < 0.001). The serum uric acid levels in the ET and tibolone groups did not, however, differ significantly from the nonhormone therapy group level. CONCLUSIONS We attribute our findings to the effects of progestogen, rather than estrogen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to observe if mild hyperuricemia and a high-fructose diet influence the cardiovascular and metabolic systems in hypogonadic female Wistar rats compared to normogonadic female rats. METHODS Fifty-six (56) adult female Wistar rats were used in the present work. Animals were divided into two groups: normogonadic (NGN) and hypogonadic (HGN). These groups were also divided into four subgroups in accordance with the treatment: control with only water (C), fructose (F), oxonic acid (OA), and fructose + oxonic acid (FOA). Lipid profile, glycemia, uric acid, and creatinine determinations were assessed. Cardiovascular changes were evaluated by measuring blood pressure, myocyte volume, fibrosis, and intima-media aortic thickness. RESULTS HGN rats had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) (p < 0.01) and noHDLc (p < 0.01), in addition to higher levels of uric acid (p < 0.05). The OA group significantly increased myocyte volume (p < 0.0001) and the percentage of fibrosis as well as the group receiving FOA (p < 0.001) in both gonadal conditions, being greater in the HGN group. Hypogonadic animals presented a worse lipid profile. CONCLUSION Mild hyperuricemia produces hypertension together with changes in the cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and increased thickness of the intima media in hypogonadic rats fed high-fructose diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work aims to study the associations, if any, of hyperuricemia, gout, and menopause status in the US population. METHODS Using multiyear data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we performed unmatched comparisons and one to three age-matched comparisons of women aged 20 to 70 years with and without hyperuricemia (serum urate ≥6 mg/dL). Analyses were performed using survey-weighted multiple logistic regression and conditional logistic regression, respectively. RESULTS Overall, there were 1,477 women with hyperuricemia. Age and serum urate were significantly correlated. In unmatched analyses (n = 9,573 controls), postmenopausal women were older, were heavier, and had higher prevalence of renal impairment, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. In multivariable regression, after accounting for age, body mass index, glomerular filtration rate, and diuretic use, menopause was associated with hyperuricemia (odds ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.05-1.76; P = 0.002). In corresponding multivariable regression using age-matched data (n = 4,431 controls), the odds ratio for menopause was 0.94 (95% CI, 0.83-1.06). Current use of hormone therapy was not associated with prevalent hyperuricemia in both unmatched and matched analyses. CONCLUSIONS Age is a better statistical explanation for the higher prevalence of hyperuricemia among older women than menopause status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid levels have been reported to be associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, very few studies specifically examining the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and NAFLD in postmenopausal women have been reported in China, especially in postmenopausal women with normal body mass index (BMI) in whom NAFLD is not uncommon. METHODS A cross-sectional study was employed of 528 Chinese normal-BMI postmenopausal women (aged 41-79 years) who participated in annual health check-ups. NAFLD is defined as a hepatic steatosis observed on liver ultrasonography in the absence of a second cause. Of all the participants, 121 women were diagnosed with hepatic steatosis (NAFLD group) and the others were without (non-NAFLD group). SUA quartiles were defined as follows: Q1, < 3.8 mg/dl; Q2, 3.8-4.4 mg/dl; Q3, 4.5-5.0 mg/dl; Q4, 5.1-6.0 mg/dl. Stepwise multivariable regression analysis was used to assess the relationships between SUA level and other variables. The association between SUA quartiles and hepatic steatosis was assessed using binary logistic regression. RESULTS Compared to the non-NAFLD group, the mean level of SUA was significantly higher in the NAFLD group (p < 0.01). The adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the presence of hepatic steatosis in the highest SUA quartile vs. the lowest quartile was 2.774 (1.396-5.513) for all women (p < 0.01) after adjusting for the factors which were independently associated with uric acid level including waist circumference, high blood pressure, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, γ-glutamyltransferase, and triglycerides. Most estimates changed little after further adjustment for age, metabolic syndrome, drinking status, and smoking status. The presence of hepatic steatosis significantly increased in the third and fourth quartiles of SUA. The prevalence of hepatic steatosis increased gradually with an increasing SUA quartile (p for trend < 0.01). CONCLUSION Higher SUA levels even within the normal range are positively and independently associated with the presence of hepatic steatosis in Chinese postmenopausal women with normal BMI.

Abstract
In this study, we report the relationship between hyperuricemia and hypertension in a middle-aged Chinese population, emphasizing the difference of gender. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 1776 adults aged 45-60 years, who participated in the Hefei Nutrition and Health Study (2012). Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid (SUA)> 420 μmol/l for men, and > 360 μmol/l for women. Hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical data were collected using standardized procedures. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between hyperuricemia and hypertension with adjustment of potential confounding factors. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), SBP, DBP, fasting glucose, SUA and the prevalence of hyperuricemia and hypertension were significantly higher in male than in female (p < 0.001). Females had significantly higher levels of triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (5.23 ± 0.87 vs 5.12 ± 1.01, p < 0.05, 1.50 ± 0.37 vs 1.28 ± 0.41, respectively.) than males. Simple correlation analysis showed that SUA was positively associated with WC and TG. In addition, after adjusting for potential confounders, hyperuricemia was associated with increased risk of hypertension in both males and females, with odds ratios (95% CI) of 1.680 (1.110-2.543) and 1.065 (1.012-1.118), respectively. Conclusions: The association of hyperuricemia with hypertension was stronger in males than in females, and middle-aged men with hyperuricemia had greater association with hypertension. Our findings remain to be confirmed in future prospective studies.

OBJECTIVE Serum uric acid levels have been reported to be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, few studies specifically examining the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and MetS in postmenopausal women have been reported in China. Thus, we conducted this study in order to assess the relationship between SUA levels and MetS in Chinese postmenopausal women. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 1022 Chinese postmenopausal women (aged 42-80 years) who participated in annual health check-ups was employed. MetS was defined by National Cholesterol Education Program/Adult Treatment Panel III criteria (NCEP-ATP III). Of all the participants, 385 women were diagnosed with MetS (MetS group) and the others were without MetS (non-MetS group). SUA quartiles were defined as follows: Q1, < 3.9 mg/dl; Q2, 3.9-4.5 mg/dl; Q3, 4.6-5.1 mg/dl; Q4, 5.2-6.0 mg/dl. The association between SUA quartiles and MetS was assessed using binary logistic regression. RESULTS The adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the presence of metabolic syndrome in the highest SUA quartile vs. the lowest quartile was 3.768 (2.386-5.950) for all women (p < 0.01) after adjusting for age, body mass index, blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and C-reactive protein. The presence of MetS significantly increased in the second, third and fourth quartiles of SUA. The prevalence of MetS increased gradually with an increasing serum uric acid quartile (p for trend < 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher SUA levels are positively and independently associated with the presence of MetS in Chinese postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Objective Hyperuricemia is associated with an increased risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. There are pronounced sex differences in the levels of uric acid. It is largely unknown whether or not reproductive parameters which induce hormonal changes are responsible for this. We examined if there are associations between reproductive parameters and uric acid levels in a female population-based sample. Methods In this cross-sectional analysis, data of 1530 women aged 32 to 81 years participating in the KORA F4 study, conducted between 2006 and 2008 in Southern Germany were used. Reproductive parameters were obtained by standardized interviews. Uric acid levels were tested by the uricase method. The whole study sample and stratified in pre- and postmenopausal women was analyzed. Results Menopausal status and earlier age at menarche were associated with higher serum uric acid levels (age-adjusted: p-values 0.003, <0.001 respectively; after multivariable adjustment, including BMI: p-values 0.002, 0.036). A history of oral contraceptive use showed an association with uric acid levels only after multivariable adjustment (p-value 0.009). Hot flushes showed an association with uric acid levels only after age-adjustment (p-value 0.038), but lost significance after adding other confounders. Other reproductive factors, including parity, current or ever use of hormone replacement therapy, current use of oral contraceptives, hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy, or depressive mood related to menopausal transition were not associated with uric acid levels. Conclusions Postmenopausal status, earlier age at menarche and a history of oral contraceptive use were independently associated with higher serum uric acid concentrations in women from the general population. Further studies, especially longitudinal population-based studies investigating the relationship of female reproductive parameters with uric acid levels are necessary to confirm our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize evidence for and endorsement of serum urate (SU) as having fulfilled the OMERACT filter as a soluble biomarker in chronic gout at the 2010 Outcome Measures in Rheumatology Meeting (OMERACT 10). METHODS Data were presented to support the use of SU as a soluble biomarker in chronic gout and specifically the ability to utilize it to predict future patient-reported outcomes. RESULTS SU was accepted as having fulfilled the OMERACT filter by 78% of voters. However, consensus was not obtained regarding its use as a soluble biomarker in chronic gout. Although the majority of the criteria for a soluble biomarker were fulfilled, the key criterion of association of the biomarker with outcomes was not agreed upon. It was agreed that the appropriate choice of endpoint must be linked to its clinical importance to the individual with the disorder and its temporal relationship to the intervention. Appropriate outcomes in chronic gout may therefore include gout flares, reduction in tophi, and patient-reported outcomes. CONCLUSION SU is a critical outcome measure. It has the potential to fulfil criteria for a soluble biomarker. Further analyses of existing data from randomized controlled trials will be required to determine whether SU can predict future important outcomes, in particular disability.

Abstract
AIM The incidence of the metabolic syndrome (MS) in women rises rapidly during the menopause, substantially increasing their cardiovascular risk and mortality. The aim of the study was to analyze menopausal changes in individual MS components and the parameter of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). METHODS A random population sample of 909 women aged 45-54 years, resident in Prague 4, was examined in an epidemiological study. After excluding women with gynecological hormone therapy or surgical therapy, the two groups of women were compared: women of reproductive age (REPRO, n = 245) vs. naturally postmenopausal women (POSTm, n = 149). RESULTS The incidence of MS rose significantly in menopause (REPRO/POSTm 22.9 ± 2.6%/38.3 ± 4.0%; p < 0.001). However, a detailed analysis among the five components defining MS showed that increases were only seen in waist circumference (p < 0.0001) and triglycerides (p < 0.001). There was no increase in the other components or HOMA-IR. A detailed analysis showed an increase in HOMA-IR at levels above the median (REPRO/POSTm: low HOMA-IR 0.9/0.9, not significant; high HOMA-IR 1.8/2.1, p < 0.001) and an increase in the incidence of MS just in these high levels of HOMA-IR and those rising during menopause (REPRO/POSTm: low HOMA-IR 13.8%/18.7%, not significant; high HOMA-IR 30.9%/57.3%, p < 0.0001). In menopause, there was an increase in the clustered incidence (accompanying MS) of each of the five MS components at the expense of isolated incidence (not accompanying MS). CONCLUSION The acceleration of MS incidence at the onset of menopause may be accompanied by an increase in insulin resistance only in the population at highest risk. Reproductive women entering the menopause with an isolated MS component are at high risk for developing additional risk factors during menopause.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studies have shown that obesity is associated with an increase in serum uric acid; and few data are available on the relationship between changes in measures of obesity and changes in uric acid concentrations. We investigated the relationship among percentage changes in waist circumference (%dWC), body mass index (%dBMI), and serum uric acid (%dUA). METHODS The data of 3153 individuals [1968 men, 1185 women (536 premenopausal, 649 postmenopausal)] who underwent general health screening over a 2-year period and were not taking antihyperuricemic medication were analyzed. RESULTS Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that %dBMI was associated positively with %dUA in postmenopausal women and men, and the association retained statistical significance after adjustment for changes in blood pressure and in renal function. Association between %dBMI and %dUA was not significant in premenopausal women. In men, %dWC was a predicting factor for %dUA, although it did not remain significant when %dBMI was used as a covariate in the statistical model. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio of the association between the lowest %dBMI quartile (%dBMI < -1.86) and the lowest %dUA quartile (%dUA < -7.41) was 2.04 (95% CI 1.35-3.07) in postmenopausal women and 1.46 (95% CI 1.14-1.86) in men. CONCLUSION Weight loss may represent an effective nonmedical strategy for reducing serum UA levels, especially in postmenopausal women and men.
