Abstract
The current study is aimed at providing a systematic review of the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Fabaceae species used as sources of traditional medicinies in Zimbabwe. Fabaceae is one of the well-known plant families of ethnopharmacological importance. Of the approximately 665 species of the Fabaceae family occurring in Zimbabwe, about 101 are used for medicinal purposes. Many communities in the country, mainly in peri-urban, rural and marginalized areas with limited access to healthcare facilities, rely on traditional medicines as their primary healthcare. The study reviewed research studies undertaken on Zimbabwe's Fabaceae species during 1959 to 2022. Information was gathered from literature sourced from Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, books, dissertations, theses and scientific reports. This study showed that 101 species are traditionally used to manage human and animal diseases in Zimbabwe. The genera with the highest number of medicinal uses are Indigofera, Senna, Albizia, Rhynchosia and Vachellia. Species of these genera are used as traditional medicines against 134 medical conditions, mainly gastrointestinal conditions, female reproductive conditions, respiratory conditions and sexually transmitted infections. Shrubs (39.0%), trees (37.0%) and herbs (18.0%) are the primary sources of traditional medicines, while roots (80.2%), leaves (36.6%), bark (27.7%) and fruits (8.9%) are the most widely used plant parts. Many of Zimbabwe's Fabaceae species used as sources of traditional medicines have been assessed for their phytochemical and pharmacological properties, corroborating their medicinal uses. However, there is a need to unravel the therapeutic potential of the family through further ethnopharmacological research focusing on toxicological studies, in vitro and in vivo models, biochemical assays and pharmacokinetic studies.

Anti-Biofilm, Antibacterial, and Anti-Quorum Sensing Activities of Selected South African Plants Traditionally Used to Treat Diarrhoea. Abstract
The development of resistance of microorganisms to conventional antibiotics is a major global health concern; hence, there is an increasing interest in medicinal plants as a therapeutic option. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum activities of crude extracts prepared using various solvents of nine indigenous South African plants used locally for the treatment of diarrhoea. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using the broth microdilution method and the crystal violet assay was used to test the anti-biofilm activity of the extracts against a panel of bacteria. Anti-quorum sensing activity of the extracts was assessed via inhibition of violacein production in Chromobacterium violaceum ATCC 12472. Preliminary screening of extracts against E. coli ATCC 25922 revealed that the acetone extracts had significant activity, with MIC values ranging from 0.04 to 0.63 mg/mL. Further screening against a panel of bacterial pathogens showed that the acetone extract of Bauhinia bowkeri was the most active with MIC of 0.01 mg/mL against Salmonella enteritidis, followed by Searsia lancea with MIC of 0.03 mg/mL against Bacillus cereus. All the plant extracts prevented the attachment of biofilms by more than 50% against at least one of the tested bacteria. However, only the mature biofilm of B. cereus was susceptible to the extracts, with 98.22% eradication by Searsia pendulina extract. The minimum quorum sensing inhibitory concentration of the extracts ranged from 0.08 to 0.32 mg/mL with S. lancea having the most significant activity. The extract of S. lancea had the best violacein production inhibitory activity with IC50 value of 0.17 mg/mL. Overall, the results obtained indicate that acetone extracts of S. leptodictya, S. lancea, S. batophylla, S. pendulina, B. galpinii, and B. bowkeri possess antibacterial and anti-biofilm activities and can modulate quorum sensing through the inhibition of violacein production. Therefore, these results signify the potential of the selected plant extracts in treating diarrhoea through inhibition of bacterial growth, biofilm formation inhibition, and quorum sensing antagonism, supporting their medicinal use.

Abstract
Sophorae tonkinensis Radix et Rhizoma (S. tonkinensis) has been recorded as a "poisonous" Chinese herbal medicine in Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020. The clinical reaction reports of S. tonkinensis indicated its neurotoxicity, there exists still dispute about its toxic substances. At present, there is no report on the blood and brain prototype research of S. tonkinensis. Most studies focused on alkaloids, and less on other compounds. Moreover, the constituents absorbed into the blood and brain were rarely investigated so far. In this study, a rapid and efficient qualitative analysis method was established by UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE to characterize S. tonkinensis ingredients and those entering into the rat body after oral administration. A total of 91 compounds were identified in S. tonkinensis, of which 28 were confirmed by the standards. 30 and 19 prototypes were also firstly identified in rat blood and brain, respectively. It was found that except for alkaloids, most flavonoids were detected in the rat body and distributed in the cerebrospinal fluid, suggesting that flavonoids may be one of the important toxic or effective substances of S. tonkinensis, which provides new clues and data for clarifying its toxicity or efficacy of the medical plant.

Abstract
Cardiovascular ailments result in a great rate of mortality all over the world. Myocardial infarction is a common presentation of cardiovascular disease. The current work aimed to investigate and compare the cardioprotective potentials of methanolic extracts from the aerial parts from Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia madagascariensis in adrenaline-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. The rats were categorized into five groups as follows: control group, adrenaline-treated group, Bauhinia purpurea extract + adrenaline treated group, Bauhinia madagascariensis+ adrenaline treated group, reference drug (captopril) + adrenaline treated group. The extracts as well as the reference drug were orally administered for 21 consecutive days. On day 22, adrenaline was injected as a single dose for 2 consecutive days. The adrenaline injection caused a significant increase (p < 0.05) in serum cardiac markers (ALT, AST, CK-MB, LDH), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-9), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activities, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) cardiac lipid peroxides (MDA) levels and a significant decline (p < 0.05) in cardiac reduced glutathione (GSH) levels compared to their corresponding controls. The pretreatment extracts significantly ameliorated (p < 0.05) these alterations. Histopathological investigations supported the biochemical data. Bauhinia madagascariensis extract exerted a significant anti-inflammatory activity than that of Bauhinia purpurea. In addition, Bauhinia madagascariensis extract revealed a significant inhibitory activity on ACE compared to that of Bauhinia purpurea, (p < 0.05). These data reveal that both extracts had a strong protective activity against adrenaline-induced cardiotoxicity via improving cardiac function, reducing ECG and histopathological changes that could be mediated in part through its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory effects, inhibition of ACE, MMP-9, and iNOS.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Combretum species are used traditionally for the treatment of diarrhoea, hookworm, fever, inflammation, pain and infectious diseases. Infections are commonly caused by the intake of food contaminated with foodborne pathogens. These are a significant concern in the food industry owing to their ability to form biofilms and cause food spoilage, despite the availability of modern food preservation techniques. Combretum elaeagnoides Klotzsch (Combretaceae) is used in southern African traditional medicine against infections and diarrhoea. AIM OF THE STUDY This study evaluated the antimicrobial ability of C. elaeagnoides leaf fractions and the isolated compound quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside against a panel of foodborne pathogens, and biofilms formed by them. The samples were also assessed for their antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fractions prepared from the methanol extract of the leaves, and a bioactive compound (quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside) isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction were investigated for activity against nine reference and clinical strains of foodborne pathogens. The microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the fractions and compound. The inhibition of biofilm formation and the crystal violet staining assays were used to determine the antibiofilm efficacy. The DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay and the 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) electron reduction assay were used to determine the antioxidant potential of the fractions and compound. The cytotoxicity was assessed using the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay against Vero African monkey kidney cells. RESULTS The fractions were active against all tested organisms, with MIC values ranging from 0.03 to 1.25 mg/mL. The best MBC was 0.63 mg/mL. All the fractions and the purified compound inhibited biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella Typhimurium, with percentage inhibition values greater than 50% at 1 mg/mL. The compound had very promising antibiofilm activity against Escherichia coli 1 (ATCC 25922) with percentage inhibition of >150%. The compound and fractions had good radical scavenging potential against the DPPH and ABTS radicals. Quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside and the fractions were relatively non-cytotoxic. CONCLUSION The ability of the fractions and compound to reduce and inhibit biofilm biomass and their promising antioxidant potential provide motivation to further investigate the use of plants to protect food products from contamination, as well as to treat infections characterized by bacterial biofilms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many species of theBauhinia genus have been widely used in folk medicine as analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. (-)-Fisetinidol palmitate is a semi-syntetic flavonoid obtained from the ethanolic extract of the stem of Bauhinia pulchella. This study aimed to evaluate the antiresorptive effect of the semi-syntetic (-)-fisetinidol palmitate in ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. Also, it evaluated the mechanism of action of (-)-fisetinidol palmitate and its toxicity. DESIGN Periodontitis was inducedvia a nylon thread ligature (3.0) around the second upper left molars. Rats were treated (oral gavage) once a day for 11 days with (-)-fisetinidol palmitate (0.01 or 0.1 mg/kg) or saline vehicle. RESULTS (-)-Fisetinidol palmitate (0.1 mg/kg) reduced alveolar bone loss, increased bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activity; also, it decreased IL1-β, IL-8/CINC-1, nitrite/nitrate levels and myeloperoxidase activity. (-)-Fisetinidol palmitate reduced the mRNA levels of IL1-β, IL-6, RANK, and RANK-L, while it increased the OPG ones. No statistical differences (P > 0.05) were observed in the transaminases (ALT, AST) and Total Alkaline Phosphatase (TALP) levels among groups. (-)- CONCLUSIONS Fisetinidol palmitate did not result in any signs of toxicity and had anti-resorptive effects in a pre-clinical trial of periodontitis, showing antioxidant activity with the involvement of the RANK/RANKL/OPG pathway.

Abstract
Fungal strains belonging to genus Fusarium and Aspergillus are known to infect crops, resulting in threatened food security and less agricultural crop yields. The aim of the current work was to investigate the anti-mycotoxigenic activity, cytotoxic effect and antioxidant potential of selected South African medicinal plants extracts. The aqueous and organic extracts of the leaves from selected medicinal plants were investigated for their antifungal activity against various fungal strains that are known to infect crops and produce mycotoxins. Antioxidant activity, total phenolic and total flavonoids contents were also evaluated. Organic extract of Milletia grandis (E. Mey) Skeels revealed the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.01 mg/mL against Aspergillus ochraceous, Fusarium graminearum and Furasium oxysporum. Generally, organic extracts revealed significant antifungal activity compared to aqueous extracts. Carpobrutus eludis L. and Warburgia salutaris (G. Bertol) Chiov. revealed a potent cytotoxic effect yielding 50 % lethal concentration (LC50) value of 0.01 mg/mL against Bovine dermis and Vero cells respectively. Ricinus communis L. revealed a 50 % inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 945 μg/mL against 2, 2 diphenyl-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH). Generally, the plant species revealed lower flavonoids compared to phenolic contents. The biological activity of the selected plant extracts may be attributed to the high phenolic contents.

Abstract
Bauhinia L. (Fabaceae) comprises ca. 300-350 plant species, many of which are traditionally used in folk medicine for their antidiabetic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Bauhinia s.l. recently has been subdivided into 9 genera based on phylogenetic data: Bauhinia s.str., Barklya, Brenierea, Gigasiphon, Lysiphyllum, Phanera, Piliostigma, Schnella (American Phanera) and Tylosema. The aerial parts of 8 species corresponding to 5 genera were analyzed: Bauhinia forficata, Bauhinia variegata, B. variegata var. candida, Bauhinia galpinii, Schnella glabra, Piliostigma racemosa, Phanera vahlii and Lysiphyllum hookeri. Leaves and shoots were subjected to metabolite profiling via UHPLC-PDA-qTOF-MS coupled to multivariate data analyzes to identify compound compositional differences. A total of 90 metabolites were identified including polyphenols and fatty acids; flavonoid conjugates accounted for most of the metabolite variation observed. This study provides a comprehensive map of polyphenol composition in Bauhinia and phytochemical species aggregations are consistent with recent Bauhinia genus taxonomic relationship derived from phylogenetic studies. DPPH radical scavenging and α-glucosidase inhibitory assays were also performed to assess selected aspects of the antioxidant and antidiabetic potential for the examined species with respect to metabolite profiles.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Bauhinia platypetala Burch. is a traditionally used Brazilian medicinal plant, although no evidence in the literature substantiates the safety of its use. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this study was to investigate the safety of the ethanolic extract and the ethereal fraction of B. platypetala leaves. MATERIALS AND METHODS The identification of chemical compounds from the B. platypetala ethanolic extract and its ethereal fraction was performed by GC/MS and ESI-MS/MS. The plant's toxicological, cytotoxic, mutagenic and genotoxic properties were determined in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains and V79 cell culture by survival assays and comet assay. RESULTS The major compound identified in the B. platypetala ethanolic extract is palmitic acid, kaempferitirin and quercitrin, while the B. platypetala ethereal fraction was found to be rich in phytol, gamma-sitosterol and vitamin E. Moreover, the results indicated that the B. platypetala ethanolic extract has an anti-oxidative effect against H(2)O(2) in yeast. In addition, the B. platypetala ethanolic extract did not induce mutagenic effects on the S. cerevisiae N123 strain, but the ethereal fraction of B. platypetala at higher concentrations (250-500 μg/mL) induced cytotoxicity and mutagenicity. A slight cytotoxic effect was observed in mammalian V79 cells; however, both the B. platypetala ethanolic extract and its ethereal fraction were able to induce DNA strand breaks in V79 cells, as detected by the alkaline comet assay. CONCLUSION The B. platypetala ethanolic extract has antioxidant action and showed absence of mutagenic effects in yeast S. cerevisiae. On the other hand B. platypetala ethereal fraction is mutagenic and does not show antioxidant activity in yeast. In mammalian cells B. platypetala ethanolic extract and it's ethereal fraction induce cyotoxic and genotoxic action.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE Many Bauhinia species, including those indigenous to South Africa, are used in traditional medicine across the world for treating ailments such as gastrointestinal tract (GIT) disorders, diabetes, infectious diseases and inflammation. AIMS Several relevant aspects of different fractions of leaf extracts of Bauhinia bowkeri (BAB), Bauhinia galpinii (BAG), Bauhinia petersiana (BAP), and Bauhinia variegata (BAV) used in South African traditional medicine to alleviate diarrhoea related symptoms were evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS The antioxidative activities of the extracts were determined using the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS(+)) radical scavenging and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. In vitro antimicrobial activities of the extracts were determined against bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecalis) and clinical isolates of the opportunistic fungal strains (Aspergillus fumigatus, Candida albicans, and Cryptococcus neoformans) using a serial dilution microplate method. The polyphenolic contents were quantified using standard methods, and anti-inflammatory activities of the crude extracts were determined using the cyclooxygenase and soybean 15-lipoxygenase enzyme inhibitory assays. The safety of the extracts was evaluated by determining the cytotoxicity against Vero cell lines. RESULTS The acidified 70% acetone crude extract and their fractions had good antiradical potency against the DPPH and ABTS radicals. The methanol soluble portions of the butanol fractions were more potent (EC(50) ranges from 0.64 ± 0.05 to 1.51 ± 0.07 and 0.88 ± 0.18 to 1.49 ± 0.09 μg/ml against DPPH and ABTS radical respectively) compared to the standard, trolox and ascorbic acid (EC(50) ranges from 1.47 ± 0.24 to 1.70 ± 0.27 μg/ml) for both DPPH and ABTS. The crude extracts contained variable quantities of phenolic content. The crude extracts and their fractions had weak to good antimicrobial activities, inhibiting the growth of the organisms at concentrations ranging from 39 to 2500 μg/ml. The BAG crude extract and its fractions were the most active against the fungi (MICs ranging from 39 to 625 μg/ml) while the BAB extract and its fractions were the least active with the MICs ranging between 39 and 2500 μg/ml. Aspergillus fumigatus was the least susceptible fungus while Cryptococcus neoformans was the most susceptible. The phenolic-rich crude extracts of BAB, BAG, and BAP had moderate to good dose-dependent cyclooxygenase-1 enzyme inhibitory activity with inhibitions between 22.8% and 71.4%. The extracts were however, inactive against cyclooxygenase-2. The extracts had some level of cytotoxicity towards Vero cell lines, reducing cell viability to less than 10% at concentrations more than 50 μg/ml. CONCLUSION The biological activities observed in Bauhinia species provide a scientific basis for the use of the plants in traditional medicines to treat diseases with multi-factorial pathogenesis such as diarrhoea, with each aspect of activity contributing to the ultimate therapeutic benefit of the plants. However, the use of the phenolic-rich extracts of these plants to treat diarrhoea or any other ailments in traditional medicine needs to be monitored closely because of potential toxic effects and selective inhibition of COX-1 with the associated GIT injury.

Abstract
A 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)-activity-directed fractionation was used to target antioxidant constituents of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from a 20% aqueous methanol crude extract of Croton zambesicus leaf. Repeated column chromatography of the fraction on silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 led to the isolation of a new natural product, identified as quercetin-3-O-β-6″(p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside-3'-methyl ether, helichrysoside-3'-methyl ether (1), along with kaempferol-3-O-β-6″(p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside, tiliroside (2) and apigenin-6-C-glucoside, isovitexin (3) as the antioxidant constituents. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, namely NMR (1D and 2D) and mass spectrometry. Compounds 1 and 2 are reported from this species for the first time. In the qualitative antioxidant assay, the three isolated compounds instantly bleached the DPPH (0.2% MeOH) purple colour indicating antioxidant activity. In the quantitative antioxidant assay, all the isolated compounds demonstrated weak antioxidant activity compared to quercetin and rutin used as positive control antioxidant agents. The compounds displayed little to no cytotoxicity against Vero cells in an in vitro assay. The presence of these antioxidant compounds in the leaf extract of C. zambesicus could provide a rationale for the ethnomedicinal use of the plant in the management of oxidative-stress-related diseases in folk medicine.

Abstract
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the ethanol extract of leaves of Bauhinia purpurea and unripe pods of Bauhinia purpurea for its protective effects on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Nephrotoxicity was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal administration of gentamicin 100 mg/kg/d for eight days. Effect of concurrent administration of ethanol extract of leaves of Bauhinia purpurea and unripe pods of Bauhinia purpurea at a dose of 300 mg/kg/d given by oral route was determined using serum creatinine, serum uric acid, blood urea nitrogen and serum urea as indicators of kidney damage. The study groups contained six rats in each group. It was observed that the ethanol extract of leaves of Bauhinia purpurea and unripe pods of Bauhinia purpurea significantly protect rat kidneys from gentamicin-induced histopathological changes. Gentamicin-induced glomerular congestion, blood vessel congestion, epithelial desquamation, accumulation of inflammatory cells and necrosis of the kidney cells were found to be reduced in the groups receiving the leaf and unripe pods extract of Bauhinia purpurea along with gentamicin. The extracts also normalized the gentamicin-induced increase in serum creatinine, serum uric acid and blood urea nitrogen levels. This is also evidenced by the histopathological studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several herbs are traditionally used in the treatment of a variety of ailments particularly in the rural areas of South Africa where herbal medicine is mainly the source of health care system. Many of these herbs have not been assessed for safety or toxicity to tissue or organs of the mammalian recipients. METHODS This study evaluated the cytotoxicity of some medicinal plants used, inter alia, in the treatment of diarrhoea, and stomach disorders. Six selected medicinal plants were assessed for their antibacterial activities against ampicillin-resistant and kanamycin-resistant strains of Escherichia coli by the broth micro-dilution methods. The cytotoxicities of methanol extracts and fractions of the six selected plants were determined using a modified tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay). RESULTS The average minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the plants extracts ranged from 0.027 mg/mℓ to 2.5 mg/mℓ after 24 h of incubation. Eucomis autumnalis and Cyathula uncinulata had the most significant biological activity with the least MIC values. The in vitro cytotoxicity assay on human hepatocarcinoma cell line (Huh-7) revealed that the methanol extract of E. autumnalis had the strongest cytotoxicity with IC(50) of 7.8 μg/mℓ. Ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of C. uncinulata, Hypoxis latifolia, E. autumnalis and Lantana camara had lower cytotoxic effects on the cancer cell lines tested with IC(50) values ranging from 24.8 to 44.1 μg/mℓ; while all the fractions of Aloe arborescens and A. striatula had insignificant or no cytotoxic effects after 72 h of treatment. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that the methanol fraction of E. autumnalis had a profound cytotoxic effect even though it possessed very significant antibacterial activity. This puts a query on its safety and hence a call for caution in its usage, thus a product being natural is not tantamount to being entirely safe. However, the antibacterial activities and non-cytotoxic effects of A. arborescens and A. striatula validates their continuous usage in ethnomedicine.

Abstract
Plants of the genus Bauhinia (Fabaceae, Leguminosae), commonly known as cow's-paw or cow's hoof, are widely distributed in most tropical countries and have been used frequently in folk medicine to treat different kinds of pathologies, particularly diabetes, infections, as well as pain and inflammation. In recent years, interest in these plants has increased considerably throughout the world. The biological properties of different phytopreparations and pure metabolites have been investigated in numerous experimental in vivo and in vitro models. Although some contradicting evidence has been documented, in general, the results support the reported therapeutic properties, indicating that they are mainly due to the presence of flavonoids. This review summarizes the recent chemical and biological knowledge of plants of the genus Bauhinia.

Abstract
Antioxidant properties of three different medicinal plant extracts from northern Nigeria were evaluated using the traditional qualitative 2,2, diphenyl-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method and a new 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) microdilution method described here. The results were in agreement. It is a simple, rapid and inexpensive method compared with many other methods for determining quantitative antioxidant activity of plant extracts.
