Traditional complementary and alternative medicine (TCAM) for diabetic foot ulcer management: A systematic review

Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs) are a devastating micro-vascular complication of diabetes with an increased prevalence and incidence and high rate of morbidity and mortality. Since antibiotics are frequently used to treat DFU, managing the condition has proven to be extremely challenging and may eventually lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. Scientists from around the world are working to develop an alternative solution to the problem of drug resistance by exploring complementary and alternative medicines that may be obtained from natural sources. Hence, the review aims to comprehensively report the information on the natural treatments and therapy used to manage DFU. All of the information described in the current study was gathered from electronic scientific resources, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Springer Link. Findings from the current review revealed the pre-clinical and clinical utility of 18 medicinal plants, 1 isolated compound, 7 polyherbal formulations including herbal creams, a few micronutrients including vitamins and minerals, insect products such as propolis, honey and, Maggot debridement therapy for the treatment and management of DFU. Natural therapies possess better efficacy, low cost, and shorter duration of treatment when compared with the conventional treatments; hence, all information made available about them is crucial to alter the direction of treatment. Furthermore, the data presented in this review are up to date on the potential efficacy of natural complementary medicines for alleviating DFU problems in in vitro and in vivo tests, as well as clinical studies.

Ecofriendly phytofabrication of silver nanoparticles using aqueous extract of Cuphea carthagenensis and their antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity against clinically important human pathogens

The green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) is the safest, ecofriendly, cost-effective, and non-hazardous approach of nanotechnology. In the current study, we described the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Cuphea carthagenensis aqueous leaf extract as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The study aims at the synthesis, characterization, optimization, and determination of the antibacterial activity of Cc-AgNPs against clinically important human pathogens. Coating of cotton fabrics with Cc-AgNPs and their efficacy against skin infection causing organisms was also evaluated. Furthermore, antioxidant activity, growth assay and time kill assay of Cc-AgNPs were also performed in the study. The biosynthesized Cc-AgNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectrometry, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The spectroscopic and microscopic analysis demonstrated biosynthesis of face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline spherical Cc-AgNPs with an average particle size of 10.65 ± 0.1 nm. Optimized peak synthesis of Cc-AgNPs was reported at pH7, 55 °C, 4 mM silver nitrate, and 5:45 (plant extract: silver nitrate). Cc-AgNPs exhibited potent antioxidant effect and antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The lowest MIC (15 μg/ml) and MBC (25 μg/ml) values were reported against S. typhimurium. The Cc-AgNPs coated fabrics demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against tested strains. This application could be helpful in wound healing management. Furthermore, the hemolytic analysis demonstrated that Cc-AgNPs exhibit non-toxic nature against Red Blood Cells (RBCs) at the tested concentrations. In conclusion, the investigation demonstrated a fast, stable, and eco-friendly approach to the biosynthesis of Cc-AgNPs along with their antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

Enzyme Inhibition and Antimicrobial Activities of Fractionated Wild Grape (Ampelocissus martinii Planch.) Seed Extracts

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Study on medicinal plant extract is gradually interested and distributed, especially their biological activities. The present study aimed to determine the enzyme inhibition and antimicrobial activities of the fractionated extracts of wild grape (Ampelocissus martinii Planch.) seeds.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Wild grape seeds in different growth stages were extracted with methanol before fractionation by silica gel chromatography. The anti-glucosidase and anti-tyrosinase enzyme activities of the extracts were then tested by using UV-Vis spectrophotometry and antimicrobial activities were observed from MIC, MBC values and time killing assay.

RESULTS

The sub-fraction of immature stage eluted by ethyl acetate/methanol at 75/25 (%v/v) has the highest enzyme inhibition activity and the most potent efficiency for time kills profiles. The MIC values of the potent immature, mature and ripe fractioned extracts were ranging from 1.25-50.00, 1.25-50.00 and 1.56-25.00 mg mL-1, respectively, while the MBC values ranged from 3.12-6.25, 3.12-25.00 and 3.12-25.00 mg mL-1, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The wild grape seed composed of α-glucosidase and tyrosinase inhibition and antibacterial activities compounds. The wild grape seed extracts may be used as active ingredients sources of health-supporting products or cosmetics.
