Abstract
Comprehending heavy mineral composition of the sandy land in Northeast China (NESL) is of great significance for interpreting generation, pathways, source and geochemistry of sediments in this area. To this end, the fine-grained (<63 μm) aeolian-fluvial sediments and loess deposits, which were taken from the Onqin Daga Sandy Land, the Horqin Sandy Land, the Hulun Buir Sandy Land and the Songnen Sandy Land, and from the downwind loess section (L1), respectively, were analyzed to construct the heavy mineral data set of NESL source and sink and to evaluate feasibility of the heavy mineral method in tracing the source of aeolian dust in Northeast China. Additionally, the <63 μm, 63–125 μm and 125–250 μm fractions of the fluvial sands from the different Balan River reaches having a same source, were analyzed to valuate the impact of the river transport-sedimentation process on the heavy mineral composition. The results show that the NESL shows moderate similarities in the heavy mineral composition, with ilmenite, epidote, zircon and amphibole as the primary minerals. In the source-to-sink system in the NESL, limited by sedimentary differentiation, post-deposition alteration and similar source material composition, the heavy mineral composition of the loess and that of sandy-land sources does not well correlate, indicating single heavy mineral method is incapable of unequivocally detecting loess sources when not considering the physical geographical conditions. The sediments in the different Balan River reaches show clear diversities and grain-size dependency in heavy minerals composition, indicating the river transport-deposition processes exert a clear control on the heavy-mineral composition in the sediment downstream. Both a wide grain-size window and more numbers of samples are needed to obtain a complete heavy-mineral picture in the source area.

Abstract
Understanding the physicochemical properties and heterogeneous processes of aerosols is key not only to elucidate the impacts of aerosols on the atmosphere and humans but also to exploit their further applications, especially for a healthier environment. Experiments that allow for spatially control of single aerosol particles and investigations on the fundamental properties and heterogeneous chemistry at the single-particle level have flourished during the last few decades, and significant breakthroughs in recent years promise better control and novel applications aimed at resolving key issues in aerosol science. Here we propose graphene oxide (GO) aerosols as prototype aerosols containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and GO can behave as two-dimensional surfactants which could modify the interfacial properties of aerosols. We describe the techniques of trapping single particles and furthermore the current status of the optical spectroscopy and chemistry of GO. The current applications of these single-particle trapping techniques are summarized and interesting future applications of GO aerosols are discussed.

Abstract
Optical trapping-polarized Raman microspectroscopy of single ethanol (EtOH) microdroplets with a diameter (d) of 6.1-16.5 μm levitated in an EtOH vapor-saturated air/N2 gas atmosphere has been explored to elucidate the vibrational and rotational motions of EtOH in the droplets at 22.0 °C. The Raman spectral bandwidth of the C-C stretching vibrational mode observed for an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was narrower than that of bulk EtOH, suggesting that the vibrational/rotational motions of EtOH in the aerosol system were restricted compared to those in the bulk system. In practice, polarized Raman microspectroscopy demonstrated that the rotational relaxation time (τrot) of EtOH in an aerosol microdroplet with d = 16. 5 μm was slower (2.33 ps) than that in a bulk EtOH (1.65 ps), while the vibrational relaxation times (τvib) in the aerosol and bulk EtOH systems were almost comparable with one another: 0.86-0.98 ps. Furthermore, although the τvib value of an aerosol EtOH microdroplet was almost unchanged irrespective of d as described above, the τrot value increased from 2.33 to 3.57 ps with a decrease in d from 16.5 to 6.1 μm, which corresponded to the increase in EtOH viscosity (η) from 1.33 to 2.04 cP with the decrease in d. The droplet size dependences of τrot and η in an aerosol EtOH microdroplet were discussed in terms of the gas/droplet interfacial molecular arrangements of EtOH and Laplace pressure experienced by a spherical EtOH microdroplet in the gas phase.

Abstract
Optical tweezers have found widespread application in biological and colloidal physics for the measurement of pN forces over nanometer to micrometer length scales. Similar aerosol-phase measurements of interparticle force have not been reported in spite of the potential to better resolve particle coagulation kinetics. Various refractive index mismatches in the beam path as well as the need to explicitly account for gravity and inertial particle motion provide a number of challenges that must be overcome to make such measurements tractable. In this regard, we demonstrate schemes by which the particle position and trap stiffness may be unambiguously measured using bright-field microscopy with resolution comparable with analogous condensed-phase measurements. Moreover, some of the challenges of working with highly dynamic aqueous particles are introduced and exploited to observe size-dependent phenomena in aerosol optical tweezers. Notably, when combined with cavity-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, this provides a unique opportunity to explore trapping forces over a continuum of particle size and refractive index. It is expected that the methods developed will provide a basis for the measurement of pairwise interaction forces in aerosol optical tweezers while providing a probe of fundamental airborne particle trapping dynamics.

Abstract
The use of optical trapping techniques to manipulate probe particles for performing micro-rheological measurements on a surrounding fluid is well-established. Here, we review recent advances made in the use of optical trapping to probe the rheological properties of trapped particles themselves. In particular, we review observations of the continuous transition from liquid to solid-like viscosity of sub-picolitre supersaturated solution aerosol droplets using optical trapping techniques. Direct measurements of the viscosity of the particle bulk are derived from the damped oscillations in shape following coalescence of two particles, a consequence of the interplay between viscous and surface forces and the capillary driven relaxation of the approximately spheroidal composite particle. Holographic optical tweezers provide a facile method for the manipulation of arrays of particles allowing coalescence to be controllably induced between two micron-sized aerosol particles. The optical forces, while sufficiently strong to confine the composite particle, are several orders of magnitude weaker than the capillary forces driving relaxation. Light, elastically back-scattered by the particle, is recorded with sub-100 ns resolution allowing measurements of fast relaxation (low viscosity) dynamics, while the brightfield image can be used to monitor the shape relaxation extending to times in excess of 1000 s. For the slowest relaxation dynamics studied (particles with the highest viscosity) the presence and line shape of whispering gallery modes in the cavity enhanced Raman spectrum can be used to infer the relaxation time while serving the dual purpose of allowing the droplet size and refractive index to be measured with accuracies of ±0.025% and ±0.1%, respectively. The time constant for the damped relaxation can be used to infer the bulk viscosity, spanning from the dilute solution limit to a value approaching that of a glass, typically considered to be >10(12) Pa s, whilst the frequencies of the normal modes of the oscillations of the particle can be used to infer surface properties. We will review the use of optical tweezers for studying the viscosity of aerosol particles and discuss the potential use of this micro-rheological tool for probing the fundamental concepts of phase, thermodynamic equilibrium and metastability.

Abstract
We have developed and studied methods to characterize the time-varying composition of liquid microdroplets, under controlled changes to environmental conditions, using Raman tweezers. This work has focussed on measurements of inorganic salts, such as nitrate and sulfate anions, which comprise a major fraction of the dissolved solutes in atmospheric aerosols. The experimental Raman intensities for the anions of inorganic salts in optically tweezed droplets were found to be in good agreement with theoretical estimates of photon scattering. The detection limit for sodium nitrate salt in a single particle was found to be ~4 pg. The mass of an inorganic salt in the droplet can be estimated from the Raman intensity of the anion bands using a calibration curve which is independent of droplet volume. The volume of the droplet, and concentration of solute, can be found directly from the spacing of morphology dependent resonances in the Raman band of water, or indirectly from the integrated-intensity of the Raman band for the solvent. The later strategy eliminates the uncertainty in the collection efficiency of Raman-scattered light related to varying particle sizes.

Abstract
When studying the motion of optically trapped particles on the microsecond time scale, in low-viscosity media such as air, inertia cannot be neglected. Resolution of unusual and interesting behavior not seen in colloidal trapping experiments is possible. In an attempt to explain the phenomena we use power-spectral methods to perform a parameter study of the Brownian motion of optically trapped liquid aerosol droplets concentrated around the critically damped regime. We present evidence that the system is suitably described by a simple harmonic oscillator model which must include a description of Faxén's correction, but not necessarily frequency dependent hydrodynamic corrections to Stokes' law. We also provide results describing how the system behaves under several variables and discuss the difficulty in decoupling the parameters responsible for the observed behavior. We show that due to the relatively low dynamic viscosity and high trap stiffness, it is easy to transfer between over- and underdamped motion by experimentally altering either trap stiffness or damping. Our results suggest stable aerosol trapping may be achieved in underdamped conditions, but the onset of deleterious optical forces at high trapping powers prevents the probing of the upper stability limits due to Brownian motion.

Abstract
We describe a simple and efficient means of using a white LED source to illuminate an optically levitated aerosol droplet to enable study of broadband Mie scattering. The backscattered resonances are imaged through a spectrograph and CCD which show high resolution Mie scattering intensity distributions across a spectral range of 480 to 700 nm. The wide spectral range allows assignment of resonance mode numbers and mode orders using conventional Mie theory calculations. Accurate droplet sizing, within +/- 2 nm, is possible for water-based droplets with radii between 2 microm and 8 microm. We additionally demonstrate that the refractive index dispersion can be determined from a single refractive index value at known wavelength. Finally, morphological droplet dynamics are presented showing non-linear droplet evaporation behaviour at a temporal resolution of 100 milliseconds.

Abstract
The application of optical tweezers (a single-beam gradient force optical trap) to the manipulation and characterisation of aerosol particles is discussed in this tutorial review. Optical tweezers allow not only the indefinite control over a single droplet, but control over arrays of particles. Typical particle sizes span the 1-10 microm diameter range. When coupled with spectroscopic techniques for probing evolving particle size (with nanometre accuracy), composition, phase and mixing state, detailed investigations of the thermodynamic properties of aerosol, the kinetics of particle transformation, and the nature of interparticle forces and coagulation can be undertaken.
