Abstract
Context The removal of intracanal medicament is essential for sealer penetration and the success of endodontic therapy. Aims To evaluate and compare the dentinal tubule penetration of a silicone-based endodontic sealer following N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) intracanal medicament removal using ultrasonic agitation and laser-activated irrigation. Materials and Methods Eighty-one extracted single-rooted mandibular premolars were decoronated and prepared with ProTaper Universal rotary files up to MAF F3. To prepare medicament, NAC powder was mixed with propylene glycol in the ratio of 1:1, placed using a size #30 Lentulospiral, and specimens stored in an incubator for 14 days. The specimens were then instrumented with #30 Hedström and divided into three groups according to final irrigant activation techniques: Group I: Diode laser activation, Group II: Passive Ultrasonic agitation, Group III: No agitation (positive control). Canals were obturated with GuttaFlow bioseal sealer mixed with 0.1% Rhodamine B dye and gutta-percha cones and incubated for 7 days. The specimens were sectioned horizontally to obtain 1 mm thick sections from 2, 5, and 8 mm from the apex. Sections were examined under Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope to measure the depth of sealer penetration (in µm). Statistical Analysis One-way analysis of variance and Tukeys multiple post hoc test. Results The highest mean depth of penetration of 728.52 µm was seen with Group I, followed by Group II and least was seen in Group III. Conclusions Diode laser activation group was most effective in the removal of NAC intracanal medicament from all the three regions of the root canal.

Abstract
Introduction:
The placement of intraorifice barriers should facilitate proper adhesion; however, it is still a challenge with existing intraorifice barrier materials. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the push-out bond strength of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC), Tetric-N-Flow, and Biodentine as intraorifice barriers with and without diode laser activation.
Materials and Methods:
Human-extracted single-rooted 60 mandibular premolars were decoronated to standardize 13 mm root length. Root canal was instrumented with rotary ProTaper universal system till F4 and alternatively irrigated with 5 ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and normal saline, followed by obturation using gutta-percha and AH-plus sealer. About 3.5 mm of gutta-percha was removed from the orifice using peso reamer. Horizontal tooth sections of 3.5 mm in length were obtained from the coronal third of each sample and were randomly divided into three groups (n = 20 each) for intraorifice barrier materials. Group 1: GIC; group 2: Tetric-N-Flow and group 3:Biodentine. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups A and B (n = 10 each) with and without diode laser. After 7 days, the specimens were mounted in acrylic molds and push-out bond strength was evaluated under universal testing machine. Data analysis was done using One way-analysis of variance and post hoc Tuckey comparison tests (P ≤ 0.05).
Results:
Laser activation in each group showed greater push-out bond strength; however, Biodentine with laser (group 3A) exhibited higher bond strength compared to all groups (P ≤ 0.05).
Conclusion:
Biodentine with laser activation before placement of the coronal barrier of endodontic treated tooth increases the quality of bond strength.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the laser effect in root canal disinfection and periapical healing of endodontically treated teeth from patients with asymptomatic apical periodontitis. This study was performed as a randomized clinical trial. Thirty patients were selected according to the inclusion/exclusion criteria. Fifteen patients received the root canal retreatment (RCR) combined with 980-nm diode laser irradiation (LI). The canals were irrigated with saline solution and gently dried with paper points, keeping the dentin partially moist. The irradiation was performed using a 320-µm-diameter fiber in helicoidal movements (pulsed mode, power output of 1.5 W, 100 Hz for 20 s). The other 15 patients received the RCR with placebo irradiation (PI). Microbiological samples were taken in three periods: S1, after the filling material removal (baseline); S2, after laser or placebo irradiation (LI or PI); and S3, after the RCR followed by laser or placebo. The samples were submitted to the total microbial and E. faecalis counting. The periapical radiographic healing was analyzed after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Microbiological data (CFU/mg) were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (P < 0.05), and the repair by Mann-Whitney test (P < 0.05). In S2, the laser provided 42.44% microbial reduction and 53.14% of E. faecalis, different from the placebo that had no reduction, and 4.85% for Enterococcus (P < 0.05). In S3, the bacterial counts decreased without differences between groups. No differences in healing were found at 3 months. However, diode laser facilitated the repair from 3- to 12-month follow-up (P < 0.05) and had 45% more healed cases than placebo. Diode laser provided an antimicrobial effect before the biomechanical preparation but was not synergistic in RCR. It improved the periapical healing during follow-up.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on infected root canals. Twenty-one human teeth were selected, and 18 were infected by E. faecalis for 60 days. The antimicrobial strategies tested were: G1. Root canal preparation (RCP) using Niquel-Titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments, 2.5% NaOCl, and final irrigation with 17% EDTA, followed by PDT with methylene blue photosensitizer and laser diode low power; G2. RCP using stainless steel files and the same irrigation and PDT protocols as G1; G3. Same RCP protocol as G1 without PDT; G4. Only irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl; G5. Same PDT protocol as G1 without RCP; G6. Negative control; G7. Positive control. Samples for microbiological tests were collected initially (S1), after RCP (S2), and after PDT (S3). Subsequently, the roots were sectioned and prepared for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis. Bacterial growth was analyzed according to the turbidity of the culture medium, followed by spectrophotometric optical density (nm). The effect of PDT on the dentinal structure was evaluated at magnifications 1,600X and 5,000X and described qualitatively. The Wilcoxon test was used for the comparisons from the same specimens, and the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare groups ((=5%). Bacteria were found in all experimental groups' microbiological samples (S1, S2 and S3). The optical density of culture media was lower in S2 than in S1 of G1, 2, 3, and 4 (p> 0.05). After PDT (S3) in G1 and 2, there was an additional reduction in optical density of the culture medium, respectively (p>0.05). In Group 5, the analysis of culture media at S2 revealed an increase in optical density compared to S1(p>0.05). In SEM images of G1, 2, and 5, dentin with melting and recrystallization areas were evidenced. After preparation of the root canal with the rotary system or manually associated with 2.5% NaOCl, PDT was not able to completely eliminate E. faecalis present in the root canal.

Abstract
Background: Diode-assisted endodontics is nowadays utilized for pulp space disinfection, but little is known on the bonding potential of this lased root dentin when the tooth is restored with an intracanal polymer post. Objectives: to investigate the influence of diode laser irradiation settings, in laser-assisted endodontics, on the intraradicular bonding of composite materials. Methods: Sixteen two-rooted, maxillary first premolars were collected, prepared up to F4 (Protaper Universal. Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and randomly assigned in two groups: group A (chopped mode or short pulse), diode irradiated according to protocol, pulse 25 ms, power 2.5 W, and group B (microchopped mode or ultrashort pulse), pulse 25 μs, peak power 12 W (both groups GentleRay. KaVo Dental, Biberach an der Riss, Germany). Buccal canals were irradiated, palatal ones served as controls. Canals were then obturated, post space was created in all canals, and quartz-fiber posts (ICE light Danville. Danville Materials, San Ramon, CA, USA) were cemented by self-etch self-curing cement (Max Cem Elite. Kerr, West Collins Orange, CA, USA) (Max Cem Elite. Kerr, Brea, CA, USA). A week later, teeth were sectioned horizontally in 1 mm increments. Push-out test was conducted in a Zwick testing machine (Zwick Roell, Ulm, Germany) at 1 mm/min speed, and the force required to dislodge the post from each specimen (F-max) was recorded. Weibull regression models were applied for statistical analyses. Results: Differences in F-max by group (control vs. chopped mode vs. microchopped mode) and height (meaning the apical-to-coronal position of each specimen along the root) were statistically significant (p < 0.05 in all cases). Conclusions: Short pulses (or chopped mode) had a profound positive effect on the quality of intraradicular bonding, while Ultrashort pulses (or microchopped mode) affected it negatively. In addition, apically positioned bonding proved weaker compared with more coronally located specimens.

Abstract
Background: Perforations in the furcation area are common procedural accidents that can impact the outcome of treatment. There are many bioactive materials available to repair these defects. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the effect of 25% aluminum chloride solution, 20% ferric sulfate solution, and a 980-nm diode laser, when used for hemostasis, on the dislocation resistance of Biodentine placed to repair furcation perforation. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study was conducted on fifty extracted human permanent mandibular molars, with ten teeth in each group. The stimulated perforations were contaminated with blood, except for one group. The contaminated groups were either treated with aluminum chloride, ferric sulfate, diode laser, or none at all. All the perforations were restored with Biodentine and tested for push-out bond strength. Statistical Analysis Used: One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's HSD post hoc test were applied with a level of significance set at 0.05. Results: The dislocation resistance of Biodentine was found to be highest when aluminum chloride or diode laser was used for arresting bleeding. In contrast, the ferric sulfate group gave the lowest value for push-out bond strength (P < 0.05). Conclusions: According to the present study, the use of ferric sulfate as a hemostatic agent showed a negative effect on the bond strength of the calcium silicate cement to dentin. Furthermore, Biodentine performed better when diode laser and aluminum chloride were used for hemostasis.

Abstract
Background: The present study aims to assess area of open dentinal tubules by use of diode laser and electrode alone and in combination with hydroxyapatite powder and strontium chloride powder by using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Materials and Methods: A double-blinded study was carried out with 30 extracted teeth with no carious lesion or restored teeth were selected and grouped randomly as Group A - diode laser, Group B - electrode application, Group C - hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser, Group D - hydroxyapatite powder plus electrode application, Group E - strontium chloride powder plus diode laser, and Group F - strontium chloride powder plus electrode application. All the samples were made by preparing a notch of 2 mm measured with UNC-15 probe at cementoenamel junction using a diamond cylindrical bur at high speed. The teeth were then washed with distilled water and stored in solution containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer for 24 h. The samples were treated as mentioned in above said groups and were viewed under SEM the degree of occlusion of the dentinal tubules were quantified using an image analyzer. Results: Highest number of open dentinal tubules was found with Group B, that is, electrode application, whereas Group C, that is, hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser showed highest occluded tubules. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference across all the groups (P = 0.000); further, intergroup comparison with Tukey's test showed better tubular occlusion with Group C. Conclusion: The SEM results showed highest tubular occlusion with hydroxyapatite powder plus diode laser and least with electrode.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the effects of diode and Er:YAG laser irradiation of root dentin on push-out bond strength of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cements. An in vitro experimental study was conducted on 90 dentin discs, cut out of freshly extracted human teeth. The discs were instrumented to obtain 1.3-mm lumen diameter. Then, they were randomly divided into six groups (n = 15). Groups 1 and 4 subjected to diode laser (Wiser, Doctor Smile, Italy) (980 nm, 1 W, continuous mode) for 10 s and filled with MTA and CEM cements. Groups 2 and 5 subjected to Er:YAG laser (Deka, Italy) (2940 nm, 1 W, 10 Hz, 230 μs) for 10 s and filled with MTA and CEM cements. Groups 3 and 6 (control groups) were filled with MTA and CEM cements without laser irradiation. After 7 days, push-out bond strength test was performed using a universal testing machine in order to evaluate the adhesion of the biomaterials to dentin. The samples were evaluated under a light microscope at × 40 magnification to determine the mode of fracture. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The highest push-out bond strength (8.76 ± 3.62 MPa) was noted in group 1 (diode/MTA), which was significantly higher than the other groups (P < 0.001). The lowest bond strength (2.61 ± 0.81) was noted in group 6 (control/CEM). Diode laser significantly increased the bond strength of both cements (P < 0.05), but Er:YAG laser irradiation only increased the bond strength of CEM and had no significant effect on MTA (P = 0.603). The bond strength of MTA control group was higher than that of CEM control group (P = 0.001). Push-out bond strength of endodontic cements can be affected by dentin conditioning with diode 980 nm and Er:YAG laser. Nine hundred eighty-nanometer diode laser irradiation is recommended to increase the bond strength of endodontic cements particularly the CEM cement to dentin.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical and morphological effects of different lasers as a final surface treatment for endodontic therapy through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) respectively. Twenty-five maxillary canines were selected and instrumented with K3 system. Roots were randomly distributed into five groups (n = 5) according to the surface treatment: GI (distilled water), GII (NaOCl + EDTA), GIII (NaOCl + EDTA + 980 nm diode laser), GIV (NaOCl + EDTA+ 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser), and GV (NaOCl + EDTA+ 2,780 nm Er, Cr:YSGG laser). Lasers were applied for 20 s and samples were bisected, exposing the treated surface and then subjected to elements quantification by EDS and morphological evaluation by scanning electron microscope (SEM). EDS data were submitted to ANOVA-two way, and SEM scores were submitted to two-way Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. The EDS analysis showed no difference for the chemical elements and Ca/P ratio between groups (p > .05). Statistical analysis showed more intense results for GV and less intense results for GI (p < .05). The GIII showed an amorphous organic matrix surface, while GV provided greater removal of intertubular dentin forming craters, and GIV promoted dentin fusion. The EDS method used in this study was not able to verify any chemical changes in root canal dentin; Nd:YAG, Er, Cr:YSGG, and 980 nm diode laser were capable of modifying the dentin morphology, correlating characteristics features for each one, which are essential clinical knowledge to establish the correct indication for each case. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dentinal Hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most commonly encountered clinical problems. Literature reveals no specific therapy to satisfactorily eliminate dentinal hypersensitivity. AIM The aim of this study was to assess and compare the efficacy of iontophoresis with 0.33% Sodium Fluoride (NaF) gel and diode laser alone in dentinal tubule occlusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS This in vitro study included 20 teeth with intact root surfaces unaltered by extraction procedure for specimen preparation. Each tooth was cleaned, air dried and cut into three sections. Total 60 sections were prepared (30 longitudinal and 30 transverse sections), which were acid etched. In control group, no treatment was carried. In iontophoresis treatment group, samples were inserted into a foam tray containing 0.33 % NaF Gel and subjected to 1.5 mA output current for three minutes. In laser treatment group, specimens were lased with 980 nm diode laser at 0.5 W/PW (62.2J /cm2) in a noncontact mode for 30 seconds. Specimens were evaluated under Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) at 10KV to 20KV under x 2000, x5000 magnification for surface characteristics and patency of dentinal tubules. Total number of tubules visible, open, completely and partially occluded were recorded in each microphotograph and compared. RESULTS On comparison, laser group showed the least number of open tubules i.e., 130 (31.1%) followed by iontophoresis group, 155 (51.32%) and control group 417 (100%). CONCLUSION Diode laser application provided better results as compared to iontophoresis on occlusion of dentinal tubules. Hence, it can be used to treat the patients with DH.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser for selective removal of carious lesion, followed by biomodification with chitosan gel where the subsurface microhardness, chemical composition, and morphological changes of the residual caries-affected dentin were examined. Artificial dentinal lesions were created by pH-cycling method (14 days) in 104 bovine specimens (5 × 5 mm). Specimens were randomly divided according to the carious removal method: bur (low-speed handpiece) or Er:YAG laser (250 mJ/4 Hz). Specimens were treated with 35% phosphoric acid and were subdivided into two groups according to dentin biomodification: without chitosan (control) and 2.5% chitosan. Forty specimens were restored with an adhesive system and composite resin. Subsurface microhardness tests were performed in sound dentin, caries-affected dentin, residual caries-affected dentin, and after the restoration. The other 64 specimens were subjected to SEM-EDS atomic analysis. Data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). After the Er:YAG laser excavation, the microhardness value of residual caries-affected dentin was higher (p < 0.05) than bur-treated dentin. A significant decrease in the amount of Ca, P, and Ca/P ratio was found after the removal of carious lesions with Er:YAG laser (p < 0.05). The biomodification with chitosan did not influence the microhardness and atomic percentage of Ca, P, and Ca/P ratio of residual caries-affected dentin (p > 0.05). SEM analysis showed morphological changes on residual caries-affected dentin (p > 0.05). The selective removal of carious dentin with Er:YAG laser increased microhardness of residual caries-affected dentin, changing its surface morphology and chemical composition. The biomodification with chitosan did not influence the structural and chemical composition of residual caries-affected dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this article was to investigate the temperature increase of the external root surface during laser-assisted endodontic treatment using a diode laser (980 nm) in a microchopped mode. METHODS Ten freshly extracted, human maxillary incisors with mature apices were collected, prepared to size F4 at working length (ProTaper; Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), mounted to a holder, and irradiated (using spiral movements in coronal direction) with a diode laser (GENTLEray 980 Classic Plus; KaVo, Biberach, Germany) with a 200 μm fiber in four different treatment groups: Group 1 (control group) was irradiated in six cycles of 5-sec irradiation/20-sec pause with 2.5 W in the pulse mode. Groups 2 to 4 were irradiated at six cycles of 5-sec irradiation/20-sec pause in the microchopped mode (Group 2-1.6 W; Group 3-2.0 W; Group 4-2.5 W). The applied mode was 25 ms on/25 ms off. Within the on period, the laser delivered an intermittent sequence of energy complexes and the maximum output was equal to the nominated output of the device (12 W). Canals were kept moist by sterile saline irrigation in between irradiations, and temperature changes were continuously measured using a thermal imaging camera. Recordings were analyzed by a mixed model (analysis of variance [ANOVA] for repeated measurements). RESULTS The highest mean of temperature rise, 1.94°C ± 1.07°C, was measured in Group 4, followed by Group 3 (1.74°C ± 1.22°C) and Group 2 (1.58°C ± 1.18°C). The lowest increase occurred in Group 1 (1.06°C ± 1.20°C). There was a significant difference (p = 0.041) between the groups. Significant differences were found between Groups 1 and 4 (p = 0.007) and 1 and 2 (p = 0.035). In addition, a marginally significant difference between Groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.052) was noted. There was no significant difference between Groups 2, 3, and 4. Despite the low mean values reported, the highest temperature increase (+5.7°C) was measured in one of the specimens of treatment Group 2 at the middle third. CONCLUSIONS Under the conditions used and within the limitations of the study, the microchopped diode laser irradiation is a safe possible treatment option in laser-assisted endodontic treatment, concerning the temperature elevation on the external root surface.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an efficient adjuvant technique to promote disinfection of the root canal system. Therefore, it is important to investigate changes to dentin morphology and permeability induced by the use of diode laser on the root dentin. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate morphological changes and the percentage of apical leakage after the use of laser. Material and method Forty single-rooted teeth were instrumented using rotary system and irrigated. Teeth were randomly divided in two groups: G1 - not exposed to PDT (control), and G2 - pretreated with toluidine blue photosensitizer and irradiated with AsGaAl laser diode. Ten teeth in each group were evaluated by SEM for morphological changes. The other ten teeth were filled and stained with Rhodamine B to evaluate the apical leakage. Result The results showed significant difference between G1 and G2 (p <0.001 - chi-square), with greater presence of debris in G1 and higher incidence of open dentinal tubules in G2. Erosions and cracks were observed in both groups, with no statistically significant difference (p> 0.001). The apical leakage was significantly higher in G2 than in G1 (p <0.001 - Student's t-test). Conclusion It was concluded that the use of low-level laser reduced the smear layer and opened the dentinal tubules. Use of laser increased the permeability of the apical dentin.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effect of diode laser and ultrasonics with and without ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) on the smear layer removal from root canals. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 mandibular premolars were decoronated to working the length of 12 mm and prepared with protaper rotary files up to size F3. Group A canals irrigated with 1 ml of 3% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by 3 ml of 3% NaOCl. Group B canals irrigated with 1 ml of 17% EDTA followed by 3 ml of 3% NaOCl. Group C canals lased with a diode laser. Group D canals were initially irrigated with 0.8 ml of 17% EDTA the remaining 0.2 ml was used to fill the root canals, and diode laser application was done. Group E canals were irrigated with 1 ml distilled water with passive ultrasonic activation, followed by 3 ml of 3% NaOCl. Group F canals were irrigated with 1 ml EDTA with passive ultrasonic activation, followed by 3 ml of 3% NaOCl. Scanning electron microscope examination of canals was done for remaining smear layer at coronal middle and apical third levels. Results: Ultrasonics with EDTA had the least smear layer scores. Conclusion: Diode laser alone performed significantly better than ultrasonics.

Abstract
A microbe free root canal space before obturation leads to higher success rate and conventional chemo-mechanical debridement might not achieve this goal completely. First trials of laser in dentistry started from surgical intervention on caries and bones of oral cavity and extended to prepare cavities and even shaping root canals. Afterward lasers were implicated soon into direct debridement of root canal space. Anyhow failure of laser to remove debris totally from root canal space is demonstrated recently, additionally it might lead to damages to surrounding tissues or inorganic material of root canal if be used without precaution. Nowadays the theory of light assisted protocols became another start point for laser in endodontics. Laser has been introduced as an adjuvant to conventional debridement of root canals. We used Medline search engine to collect scientific publications to edit this review article in purpose of revealing the evolution of laser position from an ultimate cleaning methodology to an adjuvant to conventional root canal disinfection protocols.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the effect of various final irrigant activation protocols on push-out bond strength of fiber post. Thirty-two single-rooted human maxillar central teeth were sectioned below the cementoenamel junction, instrumented and obturated. Post-space preparation was performed, and roots were randomly divided into eight groups (n = 4) according to the final irrigant activation protocols; distilled water was used as an irrigant in group 1. The other groups were treated with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. Conventional syringe irrigation (CSI, no activation) was used in group 2. Irrigation solutions were activated using passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI, group 3), EndoVac apical negative pressure (ANP, group 4), diode laser (group 5), neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser (group 6), erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser (group 7), and Er:YAG laser using with photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS™) technique (group 8). In all groups, fiber posts (White Post DC, FGM) were luted using Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray, Osaka, Japan). The specimens were transversally sectioned, and all slices from coronal and apical regions were subjected to push-out tests. The data were calculated as megapascals and analyzed by using two-way analysis of variance followed by post hoc Tukey honestly significant difference (HSD) tests. Removing the smear layer increased the bond strength to dentine when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The highest bond strength was obtained in the PIPS laser-activated irrigation group (p < 0.05). Coronal root region presented significantly higher bond strength than the apical region (p < 0.05). PIPS laser-activated irrigation showed higher efficiency as a final irrigant activation protocol on push-out bond strength of fiber post.

Abstract
Context: Very recently, diode laser has been used for disinfecting the root canals in endodontic treatment and increasing its success rate and longevity utilizing the thermal effect of laser on surrounding tissues. Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of 980 nm laser irradiation on intra-canal dentin surface – scanning electron microscopic (SEM) - in-vitro study. Methods: A total of 40 single-rooted freshly extracted permanent teeth were collected. Teeth were sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction using diamond disc. Root canals of all samples were prepared using hand ProTaper, which were randomly assigned into two groups (n = 20 each). Group 1: Receiving no treatment after biomechanical preparation; Group 2: 980 nm diode laser-treated root canals. Teeth were prepared for SEM analysis to check the size of intra-canal dentinal tubule openings. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed using SPSS V.16 software and compared using Levene's and independent t-test. Results: On statistical analysis, width of intracanal dentinal tubule openings in Group 1 (control) was significantly higher than those observed in Group 2 (diode laser-treated) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that the application of 980 nm diode laser on intra-radicular dentin resulted in ultrastructural alterations resulting in melting of dentin.

Abstract
This research analyzed the quality of resin-based sealer adaptation after intracanal laser irradiation. Extracted teeth (n = 168) were root canal treated and divided into four groups, according to dentin surface treatment: no laser; Nd:YAG laser (1.5 W, 100 mJ, 15 Hz); diode laser (2.5 W in CW), and Er:YAG laser (1 W, 100 mJ, 10 Hz). The teeth were divided into four subgroups according to the sealer used: AH Plus, EndoREZ, Epiphany, and EpiphanySE. For testing the sealing after root canal obturation, the penetration of silver nitrate solution was measured, whereas to evaluate the adaptation and penetration of the sealer into the dentin, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) was used. The ESEM images were analyzed using a four-grade criteria score by three evaluators. The inter-examiner agreement was confirmed by Kappa test and the scores statistically compared by the Kruskal-Wallis' test (p < 0.05). Both adaptation and sealer penetration in root canals were not affected by the laser irradiation. Nd:YAG and diode laser decreased the tracer penetration for AH Plus, whereas EndoREZ and EpiphanySE performances were affected by Nd:YAG irradiation (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that intracanal laser irradiation can be used as an adjunct in endodontic treatment; however, the use of hydrophilic resin sealers should be avoided when root canals were irradiated with Nd:YAG laser.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect on dentinal surfaces of diode lasers (810 and 980 nm) at different parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-four caries-free human impacted wisdom teeth were used. The crowns were sectioned transversely in order to expose the dentin. The smear layer was removed by a 1 min application of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Each surface was divided into four quadrants irradiated at a different output power setting for each kind of laser: 0.8, 1, 1.6, and 2 W (energy densities: 2547, 3184, 5092, and 6366 J/cm(2), irradiation speed 1 mm/sec; optical fiber diameter: 200 μm; continuous and noncontact mode). Half of the samples were stained with a graphite paste. All specimens were sent for scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Pulp temperature increases in additional 20 teeth were measured by a thermocouple. RESULTS Diode laser irradiations at 0.8 and 1 W led to occlusion or narrowing of dentin tubules without provoking fissures or cracks. The application of graphite paste increased the thermal effects in dentin. Measurements of pulp temperature showed that irradiations at 0.8 and 1 W for a period of 10 sec in continuous mode increased pulp temperature (T ≤2°C). CONCLUSIONS Diode lasers (810 and 980 nm) used at 0.8 and 1 W for 10 sec in continuous mode were able to seal the dentin tubules. These parameters can be considered harmless for pulp vitality, and may be effective in the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of 980-nm diode laser on apical microleakage and intraradicular dentin morphology. Roots of 110 mandibular incisors were used in the study: 92 for microleakage test and 18 for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Roots were randomly assigned to 3 groups according to the irrigating solution (water, NaOCl and NaOCl/EDTA) and were divided into 3 subgroups according to the laser irradiation protocol (without irradiation, irradiated at 1.5 W and irradiated at 3.0 W). Two specimens of each subgroup were prepared for SEM. The remaining roots were filled with AH Plus and gutta-percha. Apical leakage was assessed by ink penetration and data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey-Krammer test (α=0.05). SEM analysis showed intensification of changes with increase of laser power as well as variations according to the irrigating solution. Modified smear layer was observed in specimens treated with water and irradiated with laser. Roots irrigated with NaOCl/EDTA had lower levels of infiltration (0.17 ± 0.18 mm) differing significantly (p<0.05) from those of roots irrigated with water (0.34 ± 0.30 mm), but similar (p>0.05) to those irrigated with NaOCl (0.28 ± 0.29 mm). Non-irradiated roots had lower levels of infiltration (0.10 ± 0.14 mm), differing (p<0.05) from those irradiated at 1.5 W (0.32 ± 0.22 mm) and 3.0 W (0.37 ± 0.32 mm). The 980 nm diode laser modified dentin morphology and increased apical microleakage.
