Abstract
Parental selection is perhaps the most critical decision a breeder makes, establishing the foundation of the entire program for years to come. Cross selection based on predicted mean and genetic variance can be further expanded to multiple-trait improvement by predicting the genetic correlation (r G ) between pairs of traits. Our objective was to empirically assess the ability to predict the family mean, genetic variance, superior progeny mean and genetic correlation through genomic prediction in a soybean population. Data made available through the Soybean Nested Association Mapping project included phenotypic data on seven traits (days to maturity, lodging, oil, plant height, protein, seed size, and seed yield) for 39 families. Training population composition followed a leave-one-family-out cross-validation scheme, with the validation family genetic parameters predicted using the remaining families as the training set. The predictive abilities for family mean and superior progeny mean were significant for all traits while predictive ability of genetic variance was significant for four traits. We were able to validate significant predictive abilities ofr G for 18 out of 21 (86%) pairwise trait combinations (P < 0.05). The findings from this study support the use of genome-wide marker effects for predictingr G in soybean biparental crosses. If successfully implemented in breeding programs, this methodology could help to increase the rate of genetic gain for multiple correlated traits.

Abstract
With disease-modifying drugs on the horizon for degenerative ataxias, ecologically valid, finely granulated, digital health measures are highly warranted to augment clinical and patient-reported outcome measures. Gait and balance disturbances most often present as the first signs of degenerative cerebellar ataxia and are the most reported disabling features in disease progression. Thus, digital gait and balance measures constitute promising and relevant performance outcomes for clinical trials.This narrative review with embedded consensus will describe evidence for the sensitivity of digital gait and balance measures for evaluating ataxia severity and progression, propose a consensus protocol for establishing gait and balance metrics in natural history studies and clinical trials, and discuss relevant issues for their use as performance outcomes.

Abstract
Translating RNA-seq into clinical diagnostics requires ensuring the reliability and cross-laboratory consistency of detecting clinically relevant subtle differential expressions, such as those between different disease subtypes or stages. As part of the Quartet project, we present an RNA-seq benchmarking study across 45 laboratories using the Quartet and MAQC reference samples spiked with ERCC controls. Based on multiple types of 'ground truth', we systematically assess the real-world RNA-seq performance and investigate the influencing factors involved in 26 experimental processes and 140 bioinformatics pipelines. Here we show greater inter-laboratory variations in detecting subtle differential expressions among the Quartet samples. Experimental factors including mRNA enrichment and strandedness, and each bioinformatics step, emerge as primary sources of variations in gene expression. We underscore the profound influence of experimental execution, and provide best practice recommendations for experimental designs, strategies for filtering low-expression genes, and the optimal gene annotation and analysis pipelines. In summary, this study lays the foundation for developing and quality control of RNA-seq for clinical diagnostic purposes.

Abstract
This paper presents a fully automated experimental setup tailored for evaluating the effectiveness of augmented and virtual reality technologies in healthcare settings for regulatory purposes, with a focus on the characterization of depth sensors. The setup is constructed as a modular benchtop platform that enables quantitative analysis of depth cameras essential for extended reality technologies in a controlled environment. We detail a design concept and considerations for an experimental configuration aimed at simulating realistic scenarios for head-mounted displays. The system includes an observation platform equipped with a three-degree-of-freedom motorized system and a test object stage. To accurately replicate real-world scenarios, we utilized an array of sensors, including commonly available range-sensing cameras and commercial augmented reality headsets, notably the Intel RealSense L515 LiDAR camera, integrated into the motion control system. The paper elaborates on the system architecture and the automated data collection process. We discuss several evaluation studies performed with this setup, examining factors such as spatial resolution, Z-accuracy, and pixel-to-pixel correlation. These studies provide valuable insights into the precision and reliability of these technologies in simulated healthcare environments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyse the relationship between depth of emotional experiencing and outcomes in young people. We also wanted to understand whether 'early' or 'working' depth of emotional experiencing was most predictive of outcomes, and how these compared against alliance effects. DESIGN Hierarchical linear regression analysis of data from a study of school-based humanistic counselling (SBHC). METHODS Data from 60 young people were used for the study across 15 schools: mean age 13.7 years old (range: 13-16); 67% female; 52% from Black, mixed or non-white ethnicities. Depth of emotional experiencing was rated using the Client Experiencing Scale at session 1 (early EXP) and session 6 (working EXP). The dependent variable was changes in psychological distress from baseline to 12-week follow-up, as assessed by the Young Person's CORE. RESULTS In our final model, working EXP accounted for 11.6% of the variance in YP-CORE change scores after baseline YP-CORE scores were taken into account. Early EXP and working alliance were not predictive of benefit. Sensitivity analyses indicated that working EXP was associated with benefits across a range of indicators. CONCLUSIONS Our findings show, for the first time, that depth of emotional experiencing has a significant and sizeable association with outcomes in therapy for young people. This is consistent with emerging evidence from the adult field. It suggests that practitioners working with young people should monitor the depth of emotional experiencing and foster methods for supporting its development.

Abstract
Background Advancements in medical technologies have led to the development of contact-free methods of haemodynamic monitoring such as remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). rPPG uses video cameras to interpret variations in skin colour related to blood flow, which are analysed to generate vital signs readings. rPPG potentially ameliorates problems like fretfulness and fragile skin contact associated with conventional probes in children. While rPPG has been validated in adults, no prior validation has been performed in children. Methods A two-phased prospective cross-sectional single-centre study was conducted from January to April 2023 to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and accuracy of obtaining heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) using rPPG in children, compared to the current standard of care. In Phase 1, we recruited patients ≤16 years from the neonatal and paediatric wards. We excluded preterm neonates with gestational age <35 weeks and newborns <24 hours old. The rPPG webcam was positioned 30 cm from the face. After 1 minute of facial scanning, readings generated were compared with pulse oximetry for HR and SpO2, and manual counting for RR. Correlation and Bland-Altman analyses were performed. In Phase 2, we focused on the population in whom there was potential correlation between rPPG and the actual vital signs. Results Ten neonates and 28 children aged 5 to 16 years were recruited for Phase 1 (765 datapoints). All patients were haemodynamically stable and normothermic. Patients and caregivers showed high acceptability to rPPG. rPPG values were clinically discrepant for children <10 years. For those ≥10 years, moderate correlation was observed for HR, with Spearman's correlation coefficient (Rs) of 0.50 [95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.42, 0.57]. We performed Phase 2 on 23 patients aged 12 to 16 years (559 datapoints). Strong correlation was observed for HR with Rs=0.82 (95% CI: 0.78, 0.85). There was weak correlation for SpO2 and RR (Rs=-0.25 and -0.02, respectively). Conclusions Our study showed that rPPG is acceptable and feasible for neonates and children aged 5 to 16 years, and HR values in older children aged 12 to 16 years correlated well with the current standard. The rPPG algorithms need to be further refined for younger children, and for obtaining RR and SpO2 in all children. If successful, rPPG will provide a viable contact-free alternative for assessing paediatric vital signs, with potential use in remote monitoring and telemedicine.

Abstract
Quantitative proteomics has enhanced our capability to study protein dynamics and their involvement in disease using various techniques, including statistical testing, to discern the significant differences between conditions. While most focus is on what is different between conditions, exploring similarities can provide valuable insights. However, exploring similarities directly from the analyte level, such as proteins, genes, or metabolites, is not a standard practice and is not widely adopted. In this study, we propose a statistical framework called QuEStVar (Quantitative Exploration of Stability and Variability through statistical hypothesis testing), enabling the exploration of quantitative stability and variability of features with a combined statistical framework. QuEStVar utilizes differential and equivalence testing to expand statistical classifications of analytes when comparing conditions. We applied our method to an extensive data set of cancer cell lines and revealed a quantitatively stable core proteome across diverse tissues and cancer subtypes. The functional analysis of this set of proteins highlighted the molecular mechanism of cancer cells to maintain constant conditions of the tumorigenic environment via biological processes, including transcription, translation, and nucleocytoplasmic transport.

Abstract
Current understanding of the cerebral vascular response to variations in blood pressure (BP) among individuals with hypertension is limited. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the correlation between hypertension, risk of stroke, and cerebral blood flow (CBF). We reviewed studies published between 2000 and 2023 from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct that compared mean CBF in normotensive (NTN) and hypertensive (HTN) patients. A random effects model was used to construct the risk ratio (RR), 95% confidence interval (CI), forest plot, and inverse variance weighting. Additionally, a mixed-effects meta-regression was employed to examine the impact of study-specific patient variables. This meta-analysis included eight prospective cross-sectional studies published from 2002 to 2023. It revealed a significant average difference in the standard mean CBF of -0.45 (95% CI -0.60 to -0.30, I2 = 69%, P < 0.00001), distinguishing NTN from HTN subjects. A RR of 0.90 (95% CI 0.63 to 1.30, I2 = 89%, P = 0.04) indicated a significant decrease in CBF among individuals with hypertension. We found a statistically significant relationship between changes in diastolic and systolic BPs and the mean CBF (R -0.81, P = 0.001 and R = -0.90, P = 0.005, respectively). Our research demonstrates a strong relationship between elevated BP and reduced CBF, with hypertension reducing CBF compared to NTN individuals, by increasing cerebrovascular resistance.

Abstract
The International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF-WHO, 2001) recognizes several dimensions of disability, such as body structure and function (and impairment thereof), activity (and activity restrictions) and participation (and participation restriction) and their interactions with contextual factor (personal and environmental). In this study, we map and analyse the relationship between the components of ICF in leprosy patients from two rural areas in Indonesia: Lewoleba (East Nusa Tenggara) and Likupang (North Minahasa). This study was part of a community outreach program by the KATAMATAKU team from Universitas Indonesia. The body structure was graded using the WHO hand and feet disability grade and the number of enlarged nerves, while the body function was measured by the Jebsen Taylor Hand Function Test (JTT) and Timed-up and Go (TUG). Activity limitation and participation restriction were measured using the Screening Activity Limitation Safety Awareness (SALSA) Scale and Participation Scale (P-scale), respectively. There were 177 leprosy patients from the two regions and 150 patients with complete data were included in the analysis. We found 82% (95% CI: 75.08%-87.32%) of subjects with multibacillary leprosy, 10.67% (95% CI: 6.67%-16.62%) of subjects with grade 2 WHO hand disability, and 9.33% (95% CI: 5.64%-15.06%) of subjects with grade 2 WHO foot disability. Assessment using the SALSA Scale showed 29.33% of subjects with limitation activity and 11.33% with participation restriction. Age was shown to have positive correlations with SALSA, JTT, and TUG. Inter-dimensional analysis showed that the SALSA scale had significant positive correlations with the number of nerve enlargements, P-scale, JTT, and TUG. SALSA scores of grade 2 WHO hand and foot disability were also significantly higher than grades 1 and 0. The participation scale also had a positive correlation with JTT but not TUG. Hand disability seemed to affect societal participation while foot did not. We used the ICF to describe and analyse dimensions of leprosy-related disability in Indonesia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation impairs cognitive function in healthy individuals and people with psychiatric disorders, such as bipolar disorder (BD). This effect may also impact emotion recognition, a fundamental element of social cognition. Our study aimed to investigate the relationships between pro-inflammatory cytokines and emotion recognition in euthymic BD patients and healthy controls (HCs). METHODS We recruited forty-four euthymic BD patients and forty healthy controls (HCs) and measured their inflammatory markers, including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and TNF-α. We applied validated cognitive tasks, the Wisconsin Card-Sorting Test (WCST) and Continuous Performance Test (CPT), and a social cognitive task for emotion recognition, Diagnostic Analyses of Nonverbal Accuracy, Taiwanese Version (DANVA-2-TW). We analyzed the relationships between cytokines and cognition and then explored possible predictive factors of sadness recognition accuracy. RESULTS Regarding pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α was elevated in euthymic BD patients relative to HCs. In euthymic BD patients only, higher TNF-α levels were associated with lower accuracy of sadness recognition. Regression analysis revealed that TNF-α was an independent predictive factor of sadness recognition in patients with euthymic BD when neurocognition was controlled for. CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated that enhanced inflammation, indicated by increased TNF-α, was an independent predictive factor of impaired sadness recognition in BD patients but not in HCs. Our findings suggested a direct influence of TNF-α on sadness recognition and indicated vulnerability to depression in euthymic BD patients with chronic inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overall survival (OS) is a universally accepted measure of clinical benefit; however, prolonged follow-up is needed to observe sufficient events. Disease-free survival (DFS) has been widely adopted as a primary endpoint for early breast cancer (EBC) trials, as follow-up is comparatively shorter. Here, we present an analysis evaluating DFS as a surrogate for OS for adjuvant treatment of hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HR+/HER2-) EBC. METHODS A systematic literature review which included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with ≥80% of adult patients with HR+/HER2- EBC was conducted. The RCTs evaluated various systemic therapeutic categories; key inclusion criteria included reporting of DFS and OS hazard ratios (HRs) and mature OS data. Spearman rank correlation and weighted linear regression analyses evaluated DFS and OS HR correlation. A scenario analysis tested base-case analysis robustness, and a parallel analysis using patient-level data was conducted. RESULTS The base case (N = 14 RCTs) showed an unweighted Spearman coefficient of 0.81 between OS and DFS (weighted: 0.81), with 84% of the variability in OS explained by DFS differences (R2 from weighted regression). The surrogate threshold effect (Burzykowski T, Buyse M. Pharm Stat. 2006;5:173-186) was 0.82 for DFS/OS HR. Scenario analysis (n = 9 RCTs), which excluded chemotherapy trials, and patient-level analysis using FACE trial data were consistent with the base-case analysis. CONCLUSIONS These analyses support DFS as a reliable surrogate endpoint for OS in adjuvant HR+/HER2- EBC trials. Using DFS as a surrogate measure will permit timelier access to novel treatments for patients with HR+/HER2- EBC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With disease-modifying drugs in reach for cerebellar ataxias, fine-grained digital health measures are highly warranted to complement clinical and patient-reported outcome measures in upcoming treatment trials and treatment monitoring. These measures need to demonstrate sensitivity to capture change, in particular in the early stages of the disease. OBJECTIVE Our aim is to unravel gait measures sensitive to longitudinal change in the-particularly trial-relevant-early stage of spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2). METHODS We performed a multicenter longitudinal study with combined cross-sectional and 1-year interval longitudinal analysis in early-stage SCA2 participants (n = 23, including nine pre-ataxic expansion carriers; median, ATXN2 CAG repeat expansion 38 ± 2; median, Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia [SARA] score 4.8 ± 4.3). Gait was assessed using three wearable motion sensors during a 2-minute walk, with analyses focused on gait measures of spatio-temporal variability that have shown sensitivity to ataxia severity (eg, lateral step deviation). RESULTS We found significant changes for gait measures between baseline and 1-year follow-up with large effect sizes (lateral step deviation P = 0.0001, effect size rprb = 0.78), whereas the SARA score showed no change (P = 0.67). Sample size estimation indicates a required cohort size of n = 43 to detect a 50% reduction in natural progression. Test-retest reliability and minimal detectable change analysis confirm the accuracy of detecting 50% of the identified 1-year change. CONCLUSIONS Gait measures assessed by wearable sensors can capture natural progression in early-stage SCA2 within just 1 year-in contrast to a clinical ataxia outcome. Lateral step deviation represents a promising outcome measure for upcoming multicenter interventional trials, particularly in the early stages of cerebellar ataxia. © 2024 The Authors. Abstract
This review examines factors associated with quality of life (QoL) in persons with young-onset dementia (YOD). Studies investigating and analysing factors related to QoL in persons with YOD were included. Databases searched included PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, EMBASE, and SCOPUS. Due to inconsistent outcome variables across studies, synthesis without meta-analysis was used for data integration. Methodological quality was assessed, and results were synthesised. Eleven studies were included in this review, identifying different factors influencing QoL in persons with YOD, which could be categorised into six groups. Behavioural and psychiatric factors showed the highest significant findings ratio (SFR), as determined by the ratio of 'studies finding significance' to the 'total number of studies addressing the factor'. Following in terms of SFR were care-related and physical factors. Demographic and dementia-characteristic factors had the lowest SFR. Among single factors, depressive symptoms, and neuropsychiatric symptoms, both included in behavioural and psychiatric factors, had the highest SFR. This systematic review highlights the importance of behavioural and psychiatric elements in QoL in persons with young onset and points to depressive symptoms and neuropsychiatric symptoms as potential therapeutic targets. However, as research on QoL in persons with YOD continues to expand, the inclusion of methods such as meta-analysis may be beneficial.

Abstract
Chlorine and its derivatives, such as sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and chlorine dioxide, are frequently employed as disinfectants throughout the pork supply chain in China. Nevertheless, the extensive use of NaClO has the potential to cause the creation of 'chlorine-tolerant bacteria' and accelerate the evolution of antibiotic resistance. This study evaluated the efficacy of NaClO disinfection by examining alterations in the microbiome and resistome of a pork wholesale market (PWM), and bacteria isolation and analysis were performed to validate the findings. As expected, the taxonomic compositions of bacteria was significantly different before and after disinfection. Notably, Salmonella enterica (S. enterica), Salmonella bongori (S. bongori), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) were observed on all surfaces, indicating that the application of NaClO disinfection treatment in PWM environments for pathogenic bacteria is limited. Correlations were identified between antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) associated with aminoglycosides (aph(3'')-I, aph(6')-I), quinolone (qnrB, abaQ), polymyxin (arnA, mcr-4) and disinfectant resistance genes (emrA/BD, mdtA/B/C/E/F). Furthermore, correlations were found between risk Rank I ARGs associated with aminoglycoside (aph(3')-I), tetracycline (tetH), beta_lactam (TEM-171), and disinfectant resistance genes (mdtB/C/E/F, emrA, acrB, qacG). Importantly, we found that Acinetobacter and Salmonella were the main hosts of disinfectant resistance genes. The resistance mechanisms of the ARGs identified in PWM were dominated by antibiotic deactivation (38.7%), antibiotic efflux (27.2%), and antibiotic target protection (14.4%). The proportion of genes encoding efflux pumps in the PWM resistome increased after disinfection. Microbial cultures demonstrated that the traits of microbial contamination and antibiotic resistane were consistent with those observed by metagenomic sequencing. This study highlights the possibility of cross-resistance between NaClO disinfectants and antibiotics, which should not be ignored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the construct validity, reliability, and treatment goal threshold of a Thai-language version of the 12-item Psoriatic Arthritis Impact of Disease (Thai-PsAID) questionnaire in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). METHODS This cross-sectional study involved administering the proposed Thai-PsAID to 117 Thai patients with PsA. Reliability was assessed by Cronbach's α test and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Construct validity was assessed using Spearman correlation with clinical disease activity index for psoriatic arthritis (cDAPSA), the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), EQ-5D index, and the patient-acceptable symptom state (PASS). The optimal cutoff score of the Thai-PsAID for minimal disease activity (MDA) was determined by receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS Participants had a mean age of 49.5 years, 61 (52.1%) were female, and the median disease duration was 5 years. The median Thai-PsAID score was 2.1, with a Cronbach's α coefficient of .95 and an ICC of 0.77. The mean time to complete the Thai-PsAID was 2.1 min, with no missing data. The Thai-PsAID score demonstrated a moderate correlation with the cDAPSA, HAQ, and EQ-5D with indices (Spearman's rho of .64, .54, and -.55, respectively). The cutoff of 2.7 has 81%-84% sensitivity and 69%-85% specificity for classifying patients with MDA, satisfied PASS, and indicating no need to escalate medication. CONCLUSIONS The Thai-PsAID is a valid, reliable, and feasible tool for measuring PsA prognosis. A cutoff of 2.7 accurately discriminates MDA and PASS and indicates no need for medication escalation. The Thai-PsAID may be used as a standalone measure.

Abstract
PURPOSE This scoping review aims to assess whether the severity or distress of subjective tinnitus is negatively associated or correlated with the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). A second objective is to examine whether tinnitus patients score differently on HRQoL questionnaires in comparison to subjects without tinnitus and whether HRQoL differs between specific subgroups of tinnitus. METHODS This scoping review adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines (PRISMA guidelines): the statement and extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The following databases were consulted (on the 20th of October 2023): PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus. The search string was composed of the terms tinnitus, HRQoL, and synonyms. A double-blinded screening for eligibility was performed, first on the title and abstract and subsequently on the full-text articles. Studies were considered eligible if they looked at HRQoL questionnaire results for adult patients (> 18 years) reporting chronic (> 3 months), subjective tinnitus as a primary complaint. RESULTS In total, 37 studies with a total sample size of 33,900 participants were included in this scoping review, with some studies answering multiple study objectives. Seventeen studies demonstrated the presence of a significant negative correlation between tinnitus-related distress and HRQoL. Two studies indicated that HRQoL is mediated by tinnitus-related distress. Eighteen studies found that, in general, patients with tinnitus scored significantly lower on HRQoL questionnaires in comparison to subjects without tinnitus. Nineteen studies demonstrated that subgroups of patients with more severe tinnitus complaints or specific additional complaints scored worse on HRQoL questionnaires. CONCLUSION Based on the current literature, chronic subjective tinnitus-related distress has a significant impact on health-related quality of life. In addition, subjects without tinnitus generally score significantly higher on HRQoL questionnaires than patients with tinnitus. The heterogeneity in outcome measures between studies precludes meta-analysis. Increased homogeneity in the choice of HRQoL questionnaires would make a comparison between studies possible, which would give valuable information on both a clinical and an economic level, guiding future tinnitus treatment. Abstract
Studies on the occurrence and fates of emerging organic micropollutants (EOMPs) like pharmaceuticals and pesticides in MSWs are scarce in the literature. Therefore, MSWs were sampled from 20 Indian landfills and characterized for five widely consumed EOMPs (chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin, carbofuran, carbamazepine, and sodium diclofenac), physicochemical, and biological properties. The pesticide (median: 0.17-0.44 mg kg-1) and pharmaceutical (median: 0.20-0.26 mg kg-1) concentrations significantly fluctuated based on landfill localities. Eventually, principal component and multi-factor (MFA) models demonstrated close interactions of EOMPs with biological (microbial biomass and humification rates) and chemical (N, P, K, Ca, S, etc.) properties of MSWs. At the same time, the MFA resolved that EOMPs' fates in MSWs significantly differ from bigger cosmopolitan cities to smaller rural townships. Correspondingly, the concentration-driven ecological risks were high in 15 MSWs with EOMP-toxicity ranks of diclofenac > carbofuran = chlorpyrifos > cypermethrin > carbamazepine. The EOMPs' dissolution dynamics and source apportionments were evaluated using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for the first time on experimental data, extracting four anthropogenic sources (households, heterogeneous business centers, agricultural, and open drains). The most significant contribution of EOMPs to MSWs was due to heterogeneous business activity. Notably, the aging of soluble chemical fractions seems to influence the source characteristics of EOMPs strongly.

Abstract
Background: The purpose was to investigate the content, construct, and criterion validity of muscle ultrasound in a mixed cohort of participants recovering from mild and critical COVID-19. Methods: A secondary analysis of a prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on data obtained from a battery of muscle and physical function assessments including a muscle biopsy and muscle ultrasonography (US). Rectus femoris (RF) muscle thickness (mT), quadricep complex (QC) mT, RF muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) using 2D freeform trace and estimated from Feret's diameter, and RF echo intensity (EI) were assessed with US. Muscle fiber CSA, fiber type, protein content in muscle fibers, extracellular matrix content (ECM; wheat-germ agglutin), and percent area of collagen in ECM (picrosirius red) were examined from vastus lateralis muscle biopsies. Spearman rho correlations (r) were performed to assess validity of ultrasound parameters. Results: Thirty-three individuals participated including 11 patients surviving critical COVID-19, 15 individuals recovering from mild-COVID, and 7 controls. There were several significant correlations between RF mT, QC mT, RF CSA, and RF EI with age, comorbid burden, body-mass index, and measures of muscle strength, muscle power, and physical function (range r = 0.35-0.83). RF Feret's CSA correlated to CSA of type II muscle fibers (r = 0.41, p = 0.022) and the average size of all muscle fibers (r = 0.39, p = 0.031). RF EI was correlated with collagen in muscle ECM (r = 0.53, p = 0.003) and protein content in muscle tissue (r = -0.52, p = 0.012). Conclusion: Muscle size and quality measured using US has moderate content and construct validity, and to lesser extent, fair to moderate criterion validity in a mixed cohort of individuals recovering from COVID. Muscle ultrasound quality (EI) appears to be sensitive at detecting muscle dysfunction as it is associated with strength, power, physical function, and collagen distribution in a mixed group of individuals recovering from COVID-19.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Modern comprehensive instrumentations provide an unprecedented coverage of complex matrices in the form of high-dimensional, information rich data sets. OBJECTIVES In addition to the usual biomarker research that focuses on the detection of the studied condition, we aimed to define a proper strategy to conduct a correlation analysis on an untargeted colorectal cancer case study with a data set of 102 variables corresponding to metabolites obtained from serum samples analyzed with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-HRTOF-MS). Indeed, the strength of association existing between the metabolites contains potentially valuable information about the molecular mechanisms involved and the underlying metabolic network associated to a global perturbation, at no additional analytical effort. METHODS Following Anscombe's quartet, we took particular attention to four main aspects. First, the presence of non-linear relationships through the comparison of parametric and non-parametric correlation coefficients: Pearson's r, Spearman's rho, Kendall's tau and Goodman-Kruskal's gamma. Second, the visual control of the detected associations through scatterplots and their associated regressions and angles. Third, the effect and handling of atypical samples and values. Fourth, the role of the precision of the data on the attribution of the ranks through the presence of ties. RESULTS Kendall's tau was found the method of choice for the data set at hand. Its application highlighted 17 correlations significantly altered in the active state of colorectal cancer (CRC) in comparison to matched healthy controls (HC), from which 10 were specific to this state in comparison to the remission one (R-CRC) investigated on distinct patients. 15 metabolites involved in the correlations of interest, on the 25 unique ones obtained, were annotated (Metabolomics Standards Initiative level 2). CONCLUSIONS The metabolites highlighted could be used to better understand the pathology. The systematic investigation of the methodological aspects that we expose allows to implement correlation analysis to various fields and many specific cases.

Abstract
PURPOSE The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) is the most frequently used dry eye disease (DED) questionnaire, and the Symptom Assessment iN Dry Eye (SANDE) is the simplest and quickest to apply. We analyze the correlation and level of agreement between these two questionnaires in a large DED heterogeneous population to evaluate their performance and potential interchangeability. METHODS Prospective, multicenter longitudinal survey-based study performed on patients diagnosed with DED by 99 ophthalmologists from 20/32 Mexican states. Questionnaires were applied in two consecutive visits to analyze the correlation between OSDI and SANDE to evaluate patients with DED clinically. Level of agreement was evaluated with Bland-Altman analysis, and internal consistency of instruments was evaluated individually and combined with Cronbach's alpha index. RESULTS 3421 patients studied: 1996 (58.3%) women and 1425 (41.7%) men, aged 49.5 ± 15.4 years; 995 (29.1%) patients had aqueous-deficient, 1086 (31.7%) evaporative, and 1340 (39.2%) mixed DED subtypes. Normalized baseline scores were 53.7 (OSDI) and 54.1 (SANDE). After 36.3 ± 24.4 days between visits, scores were reduced to 25.2 (OSDI) and 21.8 (SANDE) points (p < .001). A positive correlation between questionnaires was found at baseline (R = 0.592; p < .001), follow-up (R = 0.543; p < .001) and change between visits (R = 0.630; p < .001). Using both questionnaires together improved the overall reliability of symptom evaluation at baseline (α = 0.7), follow-up (α = 0.7), and both (α = 0.7), compared to individual application (OSDI α = 0.5, SANDE α = 0.6)-the same improvements applied to all DED subtypes. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a differential bias of -0.41% at baseline and +3.6% at follow-up visits between OSDI and SANDE. CONCLUSIONS We validated the correlation (high precision) between questionnaires in a large-scale population, demonstrating improved reliability (high accuracy) in evaluating DED when used together, challenging their interchangeable use. These results open a venue to improve recommendations toward a more precise and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of DED by using OSDI and SANDE concurrently.

Abstract
Normal adjacent tissues (NATs) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) differ from healthy liver tissues and their heterogeneity may contain biological information associated with disease occurrence and clinical outcome that has yet to be fully evaluated at the proteomic level. This study provides a detailed description of the heterogeneity of NATs and the differences between NATs and healthy livers and revealed that molecular features of tumor subgroups in HCC were partially reflected in their respective NATs. Proteomic data classified HCC NATs into two subtypes (Subtypes 1 and 2), and Subtype 2 was associated with poor prognosis and high-risk recurrence. The pathway and immune features of these two subtypes were characterized. Proteomic differences between the two NAT subtypes and healthy liver tissues were further investigated using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry, revealing the early molecular alterations associated with the progression from healthy livers to NATs. This study provides a high-quality resource for HCC researchers and clinicians and may significantly expand the knowledge of tumor NATs to eventually benefit clinical practice.

Abstract
In recent years, the use of inertial-based systems has been applied to remote rehabilitation, opening new perspectives for outpatient assessment. In this study, we assessed the accuracy and the concurrent validity of the angular measurements provided by an inertial-based device for rehabilitation with respect to the state-of-the-art system for motion tracking. Data were simultaneously collected with the two systems across a set of exercises for trunk and lower limbs, performed by 21 healthy participants. Additionally, the sensitivity of the inertial measurement unit (IMU)-based system to its malpositioning was assessed. Root mean square error (RMSE) was used to explore the differences in the outputs of the two systems in terms of range of motion (ROM), and their agreement was assessed via Pearson's correlation coefficient (PCC) and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC). The results showed that the IMU-based system was able to assess upper-body and lower-limb kinematics with a mean error in general lower than 5° and that its measurements were moderately biased by its mispositioning. Although the system does not seem to be suitable for analysis requiring a high level of detail, the findings of this study support the application of the device in rehabilitation programs in unsupervised settings, providing reliable data to remotely monitor the progress of the rehabilitation pathway and change in patient's motor function.

Abstract
Many clinical and consumer electrocardiogram (ECG) devices collect fewer electrodes than the standard twelve-lead ECG and either report less information or employ algorithms to reconstruct a full twelve-lead signal. We assessed the optimal electrode selection and number that minimizes redundant information collection while maximizing reconstruction accuracy. We employed a validated deep learning model to reconstruct ECG signals from 250 different patients in the PTB database. Different numbers and combinations of electrodes were removed from the ECG before reconstruction to measure the effect of electrode inclusion on reconstruction accuracy. The Left Leg (LL) electrode registered the largest drop in average reconstruction accuracy, from an R2 of 0.836 when the LL was included to 0.737 when excluded. Additionally, we conducted a correlation analysis to identify leads that behave similarly. We demonstrate that there exists a high correlation between leads I, II, aVL, aVF, V4, V5, and V6, which all occupy the bottom right quadrant in an ECG axis interpretation, and likely contain redundant information. Based on our analysis, we recommend the prioritization of electrodes RA, LA, LL, and V3 in any future lead collection devices, as they appear most important for full ECG reconstruction.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the agreement between paraspinal muscle composition measurements obtained from fat-water images using % fat-signal fraction (%FSF) in comparison to those obtained from T2-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) using a thresholding method. METHODS A sample of 35 subjects (19 females, 16 males; 40.26 ± 11.3 years old) was selected from a cohort of patients with chronic low back pain (LBP). Axial T2-weighted and IDEAL (Lava-Flex, 2 echo sequence) fat and water MR images were obtained using a 3.0 Tesla GE scanner. Multifidus, erector spinae, and psoas major muscle composition measurements were acquired bilaterally at L4-L5 and L5-S1 using both imaging sequences and related measurement methods. All measurements were obtained by the same rater, with a minimum of 7 days between each method. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess intra-rater reliability. Pearson Correlation and Bland-Altman 95% limits of agreement were used to assess the agreement between both measurement methods. RESULTS The intra-rater reliability was excellent for all measurements with ICCs varying between 0.851 and 0.997. Strong positive correlations indicating a strong relationship between composition measurements were obtained from fat-water and T2-weighted images for bilateral multifidus and erector spinae muscles at both spinal levels and the right psoas major muscle at L4-L5, with correlation coefficient r ranging between 0.67 and 0.92. Bland-Altman plots for bilateral multifidus and erector spinae muscles at both levels revealed excellent agreement between the two methods, however, systematic differences between both methods were evident for psoas major fat measurements. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that utilizing fat-water and T2-weighted MR images are comparable for quantifying multifidus and erector spinae muscle composition but not of the psoas major. While this suggests that both methods could be used interchangeably for the multifidus and erector spinae, further evaluation is required to expand and confirm our findings to other spinal levels.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested either census-tract-level median household income (MHI) or median family income (MFI) estimates may be used as a unidimensional measure of neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) in the United States (US). To better understand its general use, the purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of MHI and MFI in a wide range of geographic areas. Area-based socioeconomic data at the census tract level were obtained from the 2000 Census as well as the 2005-2009, 2010-2014, and 2015-2019 American Community Survey. MHI and MFI were used as two simple measures of neighborhood SES. Based on the five area-based indexes developed in the US, several census-tract-level socioeconomic indicators were used to derive five composite measures of neighborhood SES. Then, a series of correlation analyses was conducted to assess the relationships between these seven measures in the State of California and its seven Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Two simple measures were very strongly and positively correlated with one another, and were also strongly or very strongly correlated, either positively or negatively, with five composite measures. Hence, the results of this study support an analytical thinking that simple measures and composite measures may capture the same dimension of neighborhood SES in different geographic areas.

Abstract
Contemporary attachment researchers claim that attachment-anxiety is associated with a hyperactivating defense strategy while attachment-avoidance is associated with a deactivating defense strategy. However, to date, no study has comprehensively examined the basic patterns of specific defense expression in the two dimensions of attachment insecurity (anxiety/avoidance). To address this research gap, the current study aimed to assess the character defenses associated with attachment-avoidance and attachment-anxiety, incorporating a broad spectrum of psychological defenses. The main objective was to understand what differentiates attachment-avoidance and attachment-anxiety in defensive functioning. In this study of online questionnaire design (N = 250), university undergraduates aged between 17 to 65 completed the Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (ECR) and the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ-60). The results show that the two dimensions of insecure attachment exhibit different defensive patterns. Regarding the main findings, attachment-avoidance uniquely predicted defensive isolation, and attachment-anxiety uniquely predicted the defenses splitting, projective identification, anticipation, acting out, passive-aggression, reaction formation, and undoing. Overall, the results indicate that attachment-anxiety is a significant predictor of global defensive functioning, over and above that of attachment-avoidance. One implication of this study is that the two-dimensional model of adult attachment may offer a promising framework for organizing psychological defenses. We discuss the significance of this concerning the future of the empirical study of psychological defenses. The discussion also considers the clinical application and relevance to attachment-based psychotherapy.

Abstract
Various methodologies including genetic analyses, morphometrics, proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, etc. are now used or being developed to authenticate fish and seafood. Such techniques usually lead to the generation of enormous amounts of data. The analysis and interpretation of this information can be particularly challenging. Statistical techniques are therefore commonly used to assist in analyzing these data, visualizing trends and differences and extracting conclusions. This review article aims at presenting and discussing statistical methods used in studies on fish and seafood authenticity and adulteration, allowing researchers to consider their options based on previous successes/failures but also offering some recommendations about the future of such techniques. Techniques such as PCA, AMOVA and FST statistics, that allow the differentiation of genetic groups, or techniques such as MANOVA that allow large data sets of morphometric characteristics or elemental differences to be analyzed are discussed. Furthermore, methods such as cluster analysis, DFA, CVA, CDA and heatmaps/Circos plots that allow samples to be differentiated based on their geographical origin are also reviewed and their advantages and disadvantages as found in past studies are given. Finally, mathematical simulations and modeling are presented in a detailed review of studies using them, together with their advantages and limitations.

Abstract
Measures of step variability and body sway during gait have shown to correlate with clinical ataxia severity in several cross-sectional studies. However, to serve as a valid progression biomarker, these gait measures have to prove their sensitivity to robustly capture longitudinal change, ideally within short time frames (eg, 1 year). We present the first multicenter longitudinal gait analysis study in spinocerebellar ataxias. We performed a combined cross-sectional (n = 28) and longitudinal (1-year interval, n = 17) analysis in Spinocerebellar Ataxia type 3 subjects (including seven preataxic mutation carriers). Longitudinal analysis showed significant change in gait measures between baseline and 1-year follow-up, with high effect sizes (stride length variability: P = 0.01, effect size rprb = 0.66; lateral sway: P = 0.007, rprb = 0.73). Sample size estimation for lateral sway indicates a required cohort size of n = 43 for detecting a 50% reduction of natural progression, compared with n = 240 for the clinical ataxia score Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA). These measures thus present promising motor biomarkers for upcoming interventional studies. © 2022 The Authors. Abstract
AbstractDistinguishing cause from effect is a scientific challenge resisting solutions from mathematics, statistics, information theory and computer science. Compression-Complexity Causality (CCC) is a recently proposed interventional measure of causality, inspired by Wiener–Granger’s idea. It estimates causality based on change in dynamical compression-complexity (or compressibility) of the effect variable, given the cause variable. CCC works with minimal assumptions on given data and is robust to irregular-sampling, missing-data and finite-length effects. However, it only works for one-dimensional time series. We propose an ordinal pattern symbolization scheme to encode multidimensional patterns into one-dimensional symbolic sequences, and thus introduce the Permutation CCC (PCCC). We demonstrate that PCCC retains all advantages of the original CCC and can be applied to data from multidimensional systems with potentially unobserved variables which can be reconstructed using the embedding theorem. PCCC is tested on numerical simulations and applied to paleoclimate data characterized by irregular and uncertain sampling and limited numbers of samples.

Abstract
The purposes of the current study were to introduce a Mescher-Garwood (MEGA) semi-adiabatic spin-echo full-intensity localization (MEGA-sSPECIAL) sequence with macromolecule (MM) subtraction and to compare the test-retest reproducibility of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) measurements at 7 T using the sSPECIAL and MEGA-sSPECIAL sequences. The MEGA-sSPECIAL editing scheme using asymmetric adiabatic and highly selective Gaussian pulses was used to compare its GABA measurement reproducibility with that of short echo-time (TE) sSPECIAL. Proton magnetic resonance spectra were acquired in the motor cortex (M1) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) using the sSPECIAL (TR/TE = 4000/16 ms) and MEGA-sSPECIAL sequences (TR/TE = 4000/80 ms). The metabolites were quantified using LCModel with unsuppressed water spectra. The concentrations are reported in institutional units. The test-retest reproducibility was evaluated by scanning each subject twice. Between-session reproducibility was assessed using coefficients of variation (CVs), Pearson's r correlation coefficients, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Intersequence agreement was evaluated using Pearson's r correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots. Regarding GABA measurements by sSPECIAL, the GABA concentrations were 0.92 ± 0.31 (IU) in the M1 and 1.56 ± 0.49 (IU) in the mPFC. This demonstrated strong between-session correlation across both regions (r = 0.81, p < 0.01; ICC = 0.82). The CVs between the two scans were 21.8% in the M1 and 10.2% in the mPFC. On the other hand, the GABA measurements by MEGA-sSPECIAL were 0.52 ± 0.04 (IU) in the M1 and 1.04 ± 0.24 (IU) in the mPFC. MEGA-sSPECIAL demonstrated strong between-session correlation across the two regions (r = 0.98, p < 0.001; ICC = 0.98) and lower CVs than sSPECIAL, providing 4.1% in the M1 and 5.8% in the mPFC. The MEGA-editing method showed better reproducibility of GABA measurements in both brain regions compared with the short-TE sSPECIAL method. Thus it is a more sensitive method with which to detect small changes in areas with low GABA concentrations. In GABA-rich brain regions, GABA measurements can be achieved reproducibly using both methods.

Abstract
The existing t-test of a correlation coefficient works under a determinate environment. In uncertainty, the existing t-test of a correlation coefficient is unable to investigate the significance of correlation. The study presents a modification of the existing t-test of a correlation coefficient using neutrosophic statistics. The test statistic is designed to investigate the significance of correlation when imprecise observations or uncertainties in the level of significance are presented. The test is applied to data obtained from patients with diabetes. From the data analysis, the proposed t-test of a correlation coefficient is found to be more effective than existing tests.

Abstract
Background Inherent resistance to radio/chemotherapy is one of the major reasons for early recurrence, treatment failure, and dismal prognosis of glioblastoma. Thus, the identification of resistance driving regulators as prognostic and/or predictive markers as well as potential vulnerabilities for combined modality treatment approaches is of pivotal importance. Methods We performed an integrative analysis of treatment resistance and DNA damage response regulator expression in a panel of human glioblastoma cell lines. mRNA expression levels of 38 DNA damage response regulators were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Inherent resistance to radiotherapy (single-shot and fractionated mode) and/or temozolomide treatment was assessed by clonogenic survival assays. Resistance scores were extracted by dimensionality reduction and subjected to correlation analyses with the mRNA expression data. Top-hit candidates with positive correlation coefficients were validated by pharmacological inhibition in clonogenic survival assays and DNA repair analyses via residual γH2AX/53BP1-foci staining. Results Inherent resistance to single-shot and similarly also to fractionated radiotherapy showed strong positive correlations with mRNA expression levels of known vulnerabilities of GBM, including PARP1, NBN, and BLM, as well as ATR and LIG4—two so far underestimated targets. Inhibition of ATR by AZD-6738 resulted in robust and dose-dependent radiosensitization of glioblastoma cells, whereas LIG4 inhibition by L189 had no noticeable impact. Resistance against temozolomide showed strong positive correlation with mRNA expression levels of MGMT as to be expected. Interestingly, it also correlated with mRNA expression levels of ATM, suggesting a potential role of ATM in the context of temozolomide resistance in glioblastoma cells. ATM inhibition exhibited slight sensitization effects towards temozolomide treatment in MGMT low expressing glioblastoma cells, thus encouraging further characterization. Conclusions Here, we describe a systematic approach integrating clonogenic survival data with mRNA expression data of DNA damage response regulators in human glioblastoma cell lines to identify markers of inherent therapy resistance and potential vulnerabilities for targeted sensitization. Our results provide proof-of-concept for the feasibility of this approach, including its limitations. We consider this strategy to be adaptable to other cancer entities as well as other molecular data qualities, and its upscaling potential in terms of model systems and observational data levels deserves further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor waste disposal practices hamper the progress towards an integrated solid waste management in households. Knowledge of current practices and perception of household solid waste management is necessary for accurate decision making in the move towards a more sustainable approach. This study investigates the household waste practices and perceptions about waste management in Panji, one of the sub-districts in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia. METHODS A stratified random sampling technique using a cross-sectional survey questionnaire was used to collect data. A total of 338 households were interviewed in the survey and data were analyzed using SPSS. Chi-square goodness of fit test was used to determine the relationships between categorical variables, whereas Chi-square bivariate correlation test was performed to observe the correlation between the perceptions of waste segregation with socio-demographic background of the respondents. The correlation between perception of respondents with the locality, house type and waste type were also conducted. Principal component analysis was used to identify grouping of variables and to establish which factors were interrelated in any given construct. RESULTS The results of the study revealed that 74.3 % of households disposed of food debris as waste and 18.3% disposed of plastic materials as waste. The study also showed that 50.3% of the households segregate their waste while 49.7% did not. About 95.9% of the respondents were aware that improper waste management leads to disease; such as diarrhea and malaria. There were associations between locality, age and house type with waste segregation practices among respondents (Chi-square test, p<0.05). Associations were also found between locality with the perception of improper waste management which lead to disease (Chi-square test, p<0.05). Principal Component Analysis showed that 17.94% of the variance has high positive loading (positive relationship) with age, marital status and, type of house. CONCLUSION This study highlights the importance to design waste separation programs that suit the needs of targeted population as a boost towards sustainable solid waste management practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE It is not clear how the short-term continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sampling time could influence the bias in estimating long-term glycemic control. A large bias could, in the worst case, lead to incorrect classification of patients achieving glycemic targets, nonoptimal treatment, and false conclusions about the effect of new treatments. This study sought to investigate the relation between sampling time and bias in the estimates. METHODS We included a total of 329 type 1 patients (age 14-86 years) with long-term CGM (90 days) data from three studies. The analysis calculated the bias from estimating long-term glycemic control based on short-term sampling. Time in range (TIR), time above range (TAR), time below range (TBR), correlation, and glycemic target classification accuracy were assessed. RESULTS A sampling time of ten days is associated with a high bias of 10% to 47%, which can be reduced to 4.9% to 26.4% if a sampling time of 30 days is used (P < .001). Correct classification of patients archiving glycemic targets can also be improved from 81.5% to 91.9 to 90% to 95.2%. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the proposed 10-14 day CGM sampling time may be associated with a high correlation with three-month CGM. However, these estimates are subject to large intersubject bias, which is clinically relevant. Clinicians and researchers should consider using assessments of longer durations of CGM data if possible, especially when assessing time in hypoglycemia or while testing a new treatment.

Abstract
The study of the interdependence relationships of the variables of an examined system is of great importance and remains a challenging task. There are two distinct cases of interdependence. In the first case, the variables evolve in synchrony, connections are undirected and the connectivity is examined based on symmetric measures, such as correlation. In the second case, a variable drives another one and they are connected with a causal relationship. Therefore, directed connections entail the determination of the interrelationships based on causality measures. The main open question that arises is the following: can symmetric correlation measures or directional causality measures be applied to infer the connectivity network of an examined system? Using simulations, we demonstrate the performance of different connectivity measures in case of contemporaneous or/and temporal dependencies. Results suggest the sensitivity of correlation measures when temporal dependencies exist in the data. On the other hand, causality measures do not spuriously indicate causal effects when data present only contemporaneous dependencies. Finally, the necessity of introducing effective instantaneous causality measures is highlighted since they are able to handle both contemporaneous and causal effects at the same time. Results based on instantaneous causality measures are promising; however, further investigation is required in order to achieve an overall satisfactory performance.
