Abstract
INTRODUCTION Becoming a parent presents profound changes and numerous challenges, notably the necessity for reliable information regarding their child's health. Given the overabundance of information available today, it is important for parents to acquire the skills necessary to find, understand, evaluate and apply health information. Research demonstrates that this ability, known as parental health literacy (PHL), is crucial for developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during childhood. However, there is currently no reliable instrument for measuring PHL in the field of prevention and health promotion. This paper presents the development and validation of a new questionnaire designed to assess parents' ability to process health-related information to support the healthy development of their children aged 3-6 years. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The development of the item pool is based on Sørensen et al's conceptualisation of general health literacy (finding, understanding, evaluating and applying health information). Empirical findings suggest that communication with healthcare providers and the social network represents another important skill area for parents and is therefore included as an additional subscale. The questionnaire will be developed in four stages, including a literature search and analysis, expert consultations via Delphi study, cognitive interviews with parents and a validation study. The validation study uses exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) for construct validity, first identifying test dimensions through EFA, then confirming these dimensions with CFA to ensure the factor structure aligns with theoretical expectations. This methodology, alongside reliability and correlational analyses, seeks to assess the questionnaire's validity and reliability, expecting strong correlations with existing related constructs. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee of Fulda University of Applied Sciences. All participants receive a consent form together with the study information, in which they give their written consent to the storage, processing and linking of all data collected. The results of the study will be presented at national and international conferences and published in specialist journals. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER DRKS00033482.

Abstract
AIMS The research was conducted to determine the practices of parents regarding the fever management of their children and reveal the relationship between their health literacy (HL) and fever management of their children. DESIGN Cross-sectional study was used. METHODS This study was carried out with 242 parents. The data were collected using the Parent Descriptive Information Form, Turkish HL Scale-32 and Parents' Fever Management Scale between September 2021 and September 2022. The data were evaluated with the SPSS program, using percentages, averages, Pearson's correlation and regression analysis. RESULTS The mean age of the parents was 31.87 ± 6.59. The parents' mean Parents' Fever Management Scale score was 36.22. It means that parents had high fever management practice. Their mean Turkish HL Scale-32 total score was 34.43. 51.6% of the parents had a problematic or insufficient HL level. In the cases of fever, 61.2% of the parents stated that they took off the child's clothes, 69.0% measured temperature from the armpit, and 55.4% gave antipyretics according to the doctor's prescription. There is a statistically significant positive correlation between the Parents' Fever Management Scale and Turkish HL Scale-32. It is observed that 8.2% of the change in parents' fever management is explained by HL. CONCLUSION The study found that with an increase in parents' HL, fever management of their children also increased. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE Emerging evidence showed that developing parents' HL knowledge and skills could be an option/approach in fever management. It should be a basic nursing skill that to provide HL support to parents. REPORTING METHOD This study adhered to the relevant cross-sectional STROBE (the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents can engage in several behaviours with regard to early childhood allergy prevention (ECAP). These can be related to diet of mother/child and the modification of the home environment; not all of them are justified by current evidence. Previous studies showed that parental health literacy (HL) is related to favourable health behaviours directed at the child. This study aimed to investigate the causal effect of mothers' HL on ECAP behaviours and to test different moderators of this effect. METHODS One thousand six hundred sixty-two mothers participating in the KUNO-Kids health study in the area of Regensburg, Germany were surveyed on HL (assessed via the health care scale of the Health Literacy Survey-EU questionnaire, HLS-EU-Q47) and ECAP behaviours implemented during pregnancy and the child's first year of life. Patterns in ECAP behaviours were identified by latent class analysis. Multinomial regression modelling was performed with HL as exposure, ECAP as outcome variable, allergy risk, parental competence and bonding, anxiety and depression as moderators as well as potentially confounding variables. RESULTS We identified three classes of ECAP behaviours (class 1: "breastfeeding " N = 871; class 2: "allergen-avoidance " N = 490; class 3: "mixed behaviours " N = 301). In univariable as well as fully adjusted regression models, compared to class 1, class 2 was negatively, and class 3 was not associated with HL. None of the tested moderating variables altered the association between HL and ECAP significantly. CONCLUSIONS We found an effect of mothers' HL on ECAP behaviours: lower HL of mothers increased allergen-avoiding behaviour directed at their child, while decreasing the chance of exclusive breastfeeding. Improving HL could contribute to the implementation of recommended ECAP behaviours in families, especially to the reduction of allergen-avoiding behaviours.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to adapt the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) in English and Norwegian for use with parents. METHODS The research group evaluated all HLQ items and, where relevant, modified them to refocus the attribution of care to that of a child by a parent. Five cognitive interviews with parents were undertaken to gain a detailed depiction of the meanings and processes they used to respond to the HLQ items. Assessment of the psychometric properties of the revised HLQ was undertaken using data from a cross-sectional survey of 254 parents of children with epilepsy. Analysis included internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). RESULTS Some 22 out of 44 items and the names of three domains were modified (e.g. attribution changed from 'me' to 'my child'). Cognitive interviews indicated that parents interpreted the HLQ-Parent items in the way intended. All but three factor loadings were high to acceptable. All nine HLQ scales showed satisfactory to good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.70 to 0.87). When fitting one-factor CFA models, correlated residuals were required for four scales to generate an acceptable fit. One scale, '8. Ability to find good health information', required inclusion of two correlated residuals to generate an acceptable CFA model fit, indicating that further work on this scale is warranted. CONCLUSIONS The results from both the adaptation process and the CFA analysis supported the relevance, understanding and theoretical structure of the instrument in a parental context.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review will identify and synthesize the available qualitative evidence regarding parents' experiences of health literacy in parenting infants at home. INTRODUCTION Parental health literacy, which is essential for parents' and children's health, is associated with parents' health knowledge, parenting practices, and children's health outcomes. Parents face difficulties pertaining to their health literacy skills in daily health education and health care for their infants; therefore, understanding their parenting experience with infants from a health literacy perspective is important for health professionals. This review will evaluate and integrate qualitative evidence regarding parental experiences of health literacy in daily parenting of infants at home. INCLUSION CRITERIA This review will include qualitative data from empirical studies describing parents' experiences of health literacy in parenting infants at home. Parents of infants (0-1 year of age) living at home in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development member countries will be included. METHODS This review will follow the JBI approach for qualitative systematic reviews. The following databases will be searched for published and unpublished studies: MEDLINE (EBSCOhost), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and ProQuest Health and Medical Collection (in English and Japanese); Open Access Theses and Dissertations (in English); and Ichushi-Web, CiNii, and the Institutional Repositories Database (in Japanese). Study selection, data extraction, and critical appraisal of the methodological quality of studies will be undertaken by 2 reviewers independently. Data synthesis will be conducted using the meta-aggregation approach, and the synthesized findings will be assessed using the ConQual approach. REVIEW REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42022345187.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between parental health literacy levels and anthropometric measurements of children in Turkey. METHODS The research was of cross-sectional/correlational design and carried out with 378 consenting parents registered at a Family Health Center. A Sociodemographic Data Form and the Health Literacy Scale for Turkey-32 was used to collect the study data. Data collection was completed at face-to-face interviews held in the consultation department of the family health center. The data were analyzed with the chi-square test and Ordinal Logistic Regression Analysis. RESULTS It was determined that parental health literacy levels were associated with level of education, income status and the state of the parents' employment (p < .05). A relationship was also found between adequate levels of parental health literacy and the health status, weight and height standard deviation scores by age of the parents' children (p < .05). CONCLUSION This study found that adequate levels of parental health literacy were significantly lower than the European average. The study found that adequate parental health literacy had a positive effect on children's anthropometric measurements. Health institutions and health professionals should plan training programs to improve the health literacy of parents when they apply to health institutions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents often must take decisions regarding their children's health, which requires certain skills and competences. Parental health literacy (HL) is important in establishing positive health-promoting behaviours and better health outcomes to their children. Limited parental HL has been associated with various negative children's health outcomes. The aim of the study was to explore perceived and functional HL among parents in Cyprus. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted with a convenience sample of 416 parents of children, aged 6 months to 15 years old, presenting in pediatric outpatient departments across three Cypriot cities. Participants completed the HLS-EU-Q47, a self-reported measure of HL, and the NVS (Newest Vital Sign), a performance-based measure of HL. Associations with socio-demographic characteristics and health behaviors were explored. RESULTS Based on suggested ranges, among 416 parents, mostly mothers (83.2%), almost half of parents (42.6%) were classified as having inadequate or problematic perceived HL. Consistently, 62.8% showed high likelihood or significant possibility of limited functional HL, based on the NVS with a mean score of 2.73 out of 6 (SD = 2.02). Nevertheless, no correlation was observed between the two measures of HL. Limited parental perceived HL was statistically significantly associated with lower educational attainment, lower number of children in the family, increased self-assessed health status, and limited exercise habits. Limited parental functional HL was statistically significantly associated with female gender, younger age, lower educational attainment, receiving financial aid, lower family income, and lower alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION Even though there was lack of agreement in the classification according to the HLS-EU-Q47 and the NVS, moderate-to-low levels of perceived HL appear consistent with a performance-based measure of HL. As a high number of parents may face challenges in assessing and applying health information to improve outcomes for their children, with evidence of social gradient, healthcare services should be oriented towards identifying problematic HL while Public Health interventions are needed to enhance parental HL.

Abstract
Background The contents of children's daily activities and the amount of time spent on them has been directly linked to their health and development. Parental health behavior has also been considered a key factor, and the aim of this study was to determine the relationship between parent/guardian health literacy (HL) and their child's time spent at home by behavioral types. The study was conducted in elementary schools in Japan. Method The target subjects for this study were elementary schoolchildren (all grades, aged 6 to 12 years) and their parents/guardians, and almost 3000 schoolchildren and their parents/guardians in the Northern and Southern districts in Japan participated. The questionnaire for parents/guardians included amount of time spent per day on the seven major behavioral contents of their child's time at home, on weekdays and weekends, respectively, and a shortened five-item health literacy (HL) scale. Parent/guardian HL results were categorized into two groups (low HL group and high HL group), and we analyzed the association between the HL and child's time spent at home by behavioral contents. Results Children in the high HL parent/guardian group spent significantly less time watching TV and playing games than those in the low HL group, both on weekdays and weekends. Time spent playing outside on weekdays and on hobbies on weekdays and weekends was significantly longer for children in the high HL parent/guardian group than in the low HL group. Results of logistic regression analyses adjusted for confounders showed that higher parental/guardian HL reduced children's spending more than 30 minutes watching TV or playing games and increased children's spending more than 30 minutes on outside playing and doing hobbies. Conclusions Parental/guardian HL affected the child's time spent at home. The results could suggest that increasing parental/guardian HL has strong potential to improve children's major lifestyle behaviors..

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the longitudinal development of health literacy (HL) in a large cohort of new mothers in Germany and to investigate which determinants are associated with the initial HL level and with change over time. METHODS Longitudinal data from 1,363 mothers participating with their child in the KUNO-Kids Health Study was used; data were collected at birth of the child (baseline), after 6 and 12 months, using interviews and self-report questionnaires. The HL of mothers was assessed with the health care scale of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire, which has 16 items on accessing, understanding, appraising, and applying health information in the health care setting. Latent growth curve models were used to analyze average trajectories and predictors of HL in the total sample and in the subgroup of first-time mothers. KEY RESULTS HL values increased from baseline (M = 35.46, standard deviation [SD] = 7.34) over 6 months (M = 37.31, SD = 7.31) to 12 months (M = 38.01, SD = 7.41). The increase was statistically significant in the total sample (1.188, standard error [SE] = 0.087, p < .001) and in the subgroup of first-time mothers (1.357, SE = 0.113, p <. 001), with a steeper trajectory for mothers with lower HL at baseline. Several personal and situational variables were associated with HL at baseline (e.g., education, child health) and with its development (e.g., number of children). CONCLUSION Overall, new mothers became slightly more health literate during their child's first year of life. However, some groups of mothers could benefit from support in developing HL skills even before childbirth. Mothers told us that this ability slightly improved during the child's first year of life. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Examine if pre-COVID-19 pandemic (prior March 2020) health-related behaviours during primary school are associated with (1) being tested for SARS-CoV-2 and (2) testing positive between 1 March 2020 and 31 August 2021. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study using an online cohort survey (January 2018 to February 2020) linked with routine PCR SARS-CoV-2 test results. SETTING Children attending primary schools in Wales (2018-2020), UK, who were part of the Health and Attainment of Pupils in a Primary Education Network (HAPPEN)_school network. PARTICIPANTS Complete linked records of eligible participants were obtained for n=7062 individuals. 39.1% (n=2764) were tested (age 10.6±0.9; 48.9% girls) and 8.1% (n=569) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (age 10.6±1.0; 54.5% girls). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Logistic regression of health-related behaviours and demographics were used to determine the ORs of factors associated with (1) being tested for SARS-CoV-2 and (2) testing positive for SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS Consuming sugary snacks (1-2 days/week OR=1.24, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.49; 5-6 days/week OR=1.31, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.61; reference 0 days), can swim 25 m (OR=1.21, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.39) and age (OR=1.25, 95% CI 1.16 to 1.35) were associated with an increased likelihood of being tested for SARS-CoV-2. Eating breakfast (OR=1.52, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.27), weekly physical activity ≥60 min (1-2 days OR=1.69, 95% CI 1.04 to 2.74; 3-4 days OR=1.76, 95% CI 1.10 to 2.82; reference 0 days), out-of-school club participation (OR=1.06, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.10), can ride a bike (OR=1.39, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.93), age (OR=1.16, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.28) and girls (OR=1.21, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.46) were associated with an increased likelihood of testing positive for SARS-CoV-2. Living in least deprived areas (quintile 4 OR=0.64, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.90; quintile 5 OR=0.64, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.89) compared with the most deprived (quintile 1) was associated with a decreased likelihood. CONCLUSIONS Associations may be related to parental health literacy and monitoring behaviours. Physically active behaviours may include coparticipation with others and exposure to SARS-CoV-2. A risk-versus-benefit approach must be considered in relation to promoting these health behaviours, given the importance of health-related behaviours such as childhood physical activity for development.
