Ontogeny of Polycotylid Long Bone Microanatomy and Histology

Osteohistology of the Maastrichtian, small-bodied elasmosaurid Kawanectes lafquenianum (Sauropterygia; Plesiosauria)

Plesiosauria is a clade of marine reptiles that thrived from the Late Triassic to the end of the Cretaceous. Among plesiosaurs, the elasmosaurids are particularly notable for their diverse body sizes. Small-sized specimens of Kawanectes lafquenianum exhibit fully closed neuro-central sutures indicating skeletal maturity. To independently assess whether they are indeed small-bodied adults, we analysed the paleohistology of long bones of three differently sized Kawanectes lafquenianum specimens recovered from the La Colonia Formation, Chubut Province, Argentina. The microanatomy of the bones revealed differences in the architectural organization of the hindlimbs and forelimbs, with the humerus being highly remodelled as compared to the femur. Extensive secondary reconstruction in the propodials and ribs suggests a high rate of calcium mobilization, perhaps related to biomechanical stresses. Despite the extensive secondary reconstruction in all the bones studied, primary bone tissue comprising parallel-fibred bone and lamellar bone was identified at the outermost cortex, along with an external fundamental system in the propodial bones of one of the specimens. Overall osteohistology features indicate an adult stage for all the specimens, although it appears that our sample represents individuals at different levels of maturity. Lines of arrested growth were also registered, giving a minimum age of 11 and 14 years for the specimens MPEF-PV 1155 and MPEF-PV 11545, respectively. These results indicated that K. lafquenianum is a small-bodied elasmosaurid (3.8 m-4.2 m in body length). Additionally, the bone microstructure of the postcranial elements reflects interelemental variability. Further research involving additional specimens is needed to explore other palaeobiological aspects of Kawanectes lafquenianum, such as growth dynamics, sexual dimorphisms, locomotion, among others.

Palaeohistology of Macrospondylus bollensis (Crocodylomorpha: Thalattosuchia: Teleosauroidea) from the Posidonienschiefer Formation (Toarcian) of Germany, with insights into life history and ecology

The Posidonienschiefer Formation of southern Germany has yielded an array of incredible fossil vertebrates. One of the best represented clades therein is Teleosauroidea, a successful thalattosuchian crocodylomorph group that dominated the coastlines. The most abundant teleosauroid, Macrospondylus bollensis, is known from a wide range of body sizes, making it an ideal taxon for histological and ontogenetic investigations. Previous studies examining thalattosuchian histology provide a basic understanding of bone microstructure in teleosauroids, but lack the taxonomic, stratigraphic, and ontogenetic control required to understand growth and palaeobiology within a species. Here, we examine the bone microstructure of three femora and one tibia from three different-sized M. bollensis individuals. We also perform bone compactness analyses to evaluate for ontogenetic and ecological variation. Our results suggests that (1) the smallest specimen was a young, skeletally immature individual with well-vascularized-parallel-fibered bone and limited remodeling in the midshaft periosteal cortex; (2) the intermediate specimen was skeletally immature at death, with vascularized parallel-fibered bone tissue interrupted by at least 10 LAGs, but no clear external fundamental system (EFS), and rather extensive inner cortical bone remodeling; and (3) the largest specimen was skeletally mature, with parallel-fibered bone tissue interrupted by numerous LAGs, a well-developed EFS, and extensive remodeling in the deep cortex. Macrospondylus bollensis grew relatively regularly until reaching adult size, and global bone compactness values fall within the range reported for modern crocodylians. The lifestyle inference models used suggest that M. bollensis was well adapted for an aquatic environment but also retained some ability to move on land. Finally, both larger specimens display a peculiar, localized area of disorganized bone tissue interpreted as pathological.

Osteohistological insight into the growth dynamics of early dinosaurs and their contemporaries

Dinosauria debuted on Earth's stage in the aftermath of the Permo-Triassic Mass Extinction Event, and survived two other Triassic extinction intervals to eventually dominate terrestrial ecosystems. More than 231 million years ago, in the Upper Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of west-central Argentina, dinosaurs were just getting warmed up. At this time, dinosaurs represented a minor fraction of ecosystem diversity. Members of other tetrapod clades, including synapsids and pseudosuchians, shared convergently evolved features related to locomotion, feeding, respiration, and metabolism and could have risen to later dominance. However, it was Dinosauria that radiated in the later Mesozoic most significantly in terms of body size, diversity, and global distribution. Elevated growth rates are one of the adaptations that set later Mesozoic dinosaurs apart, particularly from their contemporary crocodilian and mammalian compatriots. When did the elevated growth rates of dinosaurs first evolve? How did the growth strategies of the earliest known dinosaurs compare with those of other tetrapods in their ecosystems? We studied femoral bone histology of an array of early dinosaurs alongside that of non-dinosaurian contemporaries from the Ischigualasto Formation in order to test whether the oldest known dinosaurs exhibited novel growth strategies. Our results indicate that the Ischigualasto vertebrate fauna collectively exhibits relatively high growth rates. Dinosaurs are among the fastest growing taxa in the sample, but they occupied this niche alongside crocodylomorphs, archosauriformes, and large-bodied pseudosuchians. Interestingly, these dinosaurs grew at least as quickly, but more continuously than sauropodomorph and theropod dinosaurs of the later Mesozoic. These data suggest that, while elevated growth rates were ancestral for Dinosauria and likely played a significant role in dinosaurs' ascent within Mesozoic ecosystems, they did not set them apart from their contemporaries.

A histological survey of avian post-natal skeletal ontogeny

Bone histology of crown-group birds is a research topic of great interest, permitting insight into the evolution of remarkably high growth rates in this clade and variation across the altricial-precocial spectrum. In this study, we describe microanatomical characteristics of the humerus and femur in partial growth series from 14 crown group birds representing ten major clades (Struthioniformes, Galliformes, Apodiformes, Columbiformes, Charadriiformes, Accipitriformes, Strigiformes, Psittaciformes, Falconiformes, and Passeriformes). Our goals were to: (1) describe the microanatomy of each individual; (2) make inter-and intra-taxonomic comparisons; (3) assess patterns that correspond with developmental mode; and (4) to further parse out phylogenetic, developmental, and functional constraints on avian osteological development. Across taxa, the femoral and humeral tissue of neonates can be broadly characterized as highly-vascularized, disorganized woven bone with great variation in cortical thickness (inter-and intrataxonomically, within an individual specimen, and within a single section). The tissue of precocial chicks is relatively more mature at hatching than in altricial, but other categories along the developmental spectrum were less easy to distinguish, thus we were unable to identify a definitive histological proxy for developmental mode. We did not find evidence to support hypotheses that precocial chicks exclusively have thicker cortices and more mature bone in the femur than the humerus at time of hatching; instead, this is a characteristic of nearly all taxa (regardless of developmental mode), suggesting deep evolutionary origins and the effects of developmental channeling. Bone tissue in adults exhibited unexpected variation, corresponding to differences in body size. Large-bodied birds have cortices of fibrolamellar bone, but organization of tissue increases and vascularity decreases with diminishing body size. The outer circumferential layer (OCL) also appears at earlier growth stages in small-bodied taxa. Thus, while the OCL is indicative of a cessation of appositional growth it is not always indicative of cortical maturity (that is, maximum organization of bony tissue for a given taxon). Small size is achieved by truncating the period of fast growth; manipulation of the timing of offset of bone growth is therefore an important factor in changing growth trajectories to alter adult body size.

Halszkaraptor escuilliei and the evolution of the paravian bauplan

The evolution of birds from dinosaurs is a subject that has received great attention among vertebrate paleontologists. Nevertheless, the early evolution of the paravians, the group that contains birds and their closest non-avian dinosaur relatives, remains very poorly known. Even the most basal members of one paravian lineage, the Dromaeosauridae, already show a body plan that differs substantially from their closest non-paravian relatives. Recently, the dromaeosaurid Halszkaraptor escuilliei was described from the Cretaceous of Mongolia. Halszkaraptor possesses numerous unserrated premaxillary teeth, a platyrostral rostrum with a developed neurovascular system, an elongate neck, bizarrely-proportioned forearms, and a foreword-shifted center of mass, differing markedly from other paravians. A reevaluation of the anatomy, taphonomy, environmental setting, and phylogenetic position of H. escuilliei based on additional comparisons with other maniraptorans suggests that, rather than indicating it was a semiaquatic piscivore, the body plan of this dinosaur bears features widely distributed among maniraptorans and in some cases intermediate between the conditions in dromaeosaurids and related clades. I find no evidence for a semiaquatic lifestyle in Halszkaraptor. A phylogenetic reevaluation of Halszkaraptorinae places it as the sister clade to Unenlagiinae, indicating the bizarre features of unenlagiines previously interpreted as evidence of piscivory may also represent a mosaic of plesiomorphic, derived, and intermediate features. The anatomy of Halszkaraptor reveals that dromaeosaurids still possessed many features found in more basal maniraptoran and coelurosaur clades, including some that may have been tied to herbivory. Rather than being a semiaquatic piscavore, Halszkaraptor was a basal dromaeosaurid showing transitional features.
