Abstract
Given the escalating global warming and the intense nature of modern poultry production, layers are becoming increasingly susceptible to heat stress. This stress disrupts the physiological processes of layers, which leads to reduced productivity and welfare. To address this issue, it is crucial to first evaluate the stress response systematically. However, such evaluations are still lacking in this field. The objective of this study was to accurately monitor the impact of thermal stress and identify common and key indicators that would support decision-making to maintain layer welfare and productivity under stress. We constructed two heat stress models to reflect moderate (32 °C) to severe (36 °C) stress effects and obtained a comprehensive profile of blood physiological parameters associated with the layers' responses to heat stress. We found that genetic differences had limited influence on their physiological responses to heat stress after 32 °C heat challenges. Using 8 selected and significantly changed parameters, layers' physiological status under heat stress could be accurately determined (judgmental accuracy of 98%). As ambient temperature increased to 36 °C, birds suffered more severe challenges that parameters changed in larger percentages. Additionally, breed variations of the physiological responses became apparent, a Fisher discriminant function based on 5 selected parameters could distinguish heat stress effects at 32 °C or 36 °C with 80% accuracy. The results obtained from this study provide two discriminant models for assessing heat stress and shed lights on developing effective and widely applicable heat stress mitigation strategies targeting these indicators.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) by high-temperature environment reduced the production performance of poultry and caused losses to the breeding industry. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of HS on serum lipidomics in Chinese indigenous slow-growing broiler chickens (Huaixiang chickens). A total of 40 8-week-old female Huaixiang chickens were randomly allocated to two groups, including normal temperature (NT, fed basal diet) and HS (fed basal diet), and each group consisted of five replicates with four birds per replicate. NT and HS groups were exposed to 21.3 ± 1.2 °C and 32.5 ± 1.4 °C for 4 weeks, respectively. Serum lipidomics in broilers was determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based metabolomics. The results indicated that there were significant differences in metabolic spectra between the groups, and a total of 17 differential metabolites were screened. Compared with NT group, HS group reduced the serum ceramide (cer) (d18:1/22:0), cer (d18:1/24:1), cer (d20:2/22:2), lyso-phosphatidylcholine (LPC) (18:0), phosphatidylcholine (PC) (18:0/20:4), PC (15:0/23:4), PC (18:0/22:6), PC (18:2/18:2), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) (18:1/18:1), polyethylene terephthalate (PEt) (37:3/8:0), phosphatidylglycerol (PG) (32:1/16:2), phosphatidyl methyl ethanolamine (PMe) (19:3/13:0), PMe (26:1/9:0), sphingomyelin (SM) (d16:0/18:1), triglycerides (TG) (18:0/18:1/18:2), and TG (19:4/21:6/21:6) levels [variable importance in the projection (VIP > 1 and P < 0.05)], while HS group increased serum PC (17:0/17:0) content (VIP > 1 and P < 0.05). Also, metabolic pathway analysis showed that the pathways of glycerolphospholipid, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid metabolism, and glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored biosynthesis were changed (P < 0.05). In conclusion, HS led to the disorders of serum lipid metabolism in broilers, and mainly downregulated serum content of phospholipids. These findings provide novel insights into the effects of HS on serum lipidomics in indigenous slow-growing chickens.

Abstract
Heat stress is an important environmental determinant which adversely affects the performance of poultry worldwide. The present communication reviews the impact of heat stress on production, reproduction and growth performance of poultry, and its alleviation using genetic strategies. The adverse effects of high environmental temperature on poultry include decrease in growth rate, body weight, egg production, egg weight, egg quality, meat quality, semen quality, fertility and hatchability, which cause vast financial losses to the poultry industry. High ambient temperature has an antagonistic effect on performance traits of the poultry. Thus, selection of birds for high performance has increased their susceptibility to heat stress. Additionally, heat burden during transportation of birds from one place to another leads to reduced meat quality, increased mortality and welfare issues. Molecular markers are being explored nowadays to recognize the potential candidate genes related to production, reproduction and growth traits for selecting poultry birds to enhance thermo-tolerance and resistance against diseases. In conclusion, there is a critical need of formulating selection strategies based on genetic markers and exploring more genes in addition to HSP25, 70, 90, H1, RB1CC, BAG3, PDK, ID1, Na, F, dw and K responsible for thermoregulation, to improve the overall performance of poultry along with their ability to tolerate heat stress conditions.

Abstract
Chicken is a homeothermic animal; consequently, regardless of fluctuation in weather conditions, it maintains constant body temperature. However, in hot regions and seasons, chickens suffer from heat stress. To dissipate excess heat, besides modifying the environment, which is costly, however, chickens with efficient heat dissipation capacity might be utilized. Naked neck chickens have a higher capacity for heat loss attributable to reduced feather mass. The naked neck mutation (Na) was originated from a large insertion (~ 180 bp) integrated ~ 260-kb downstream of a protein-coding gene-GDF7 (Growth Differentiation Factor 7). Na possesses a cis-regulatory function and upregulates the expression of GDF7-a gene that exhibits a tissue-specific effect by the sensitizing action of retinoic acid. Na suppresses the development of feathers in the neck and vent. Na shows autosomal incomplete dominance and regulates several developmental processes. Na usually segregates at low frequency, which might be attributed to limited socio-cultural preferences. Specifically, in hot and humid regions, although to a varying extent, Na enhances performance, immunocompetence, and resilience to disease both in the homozygous and heterozygous state. Occasionally, naked neck chickens (especially the homozygous ones) lose comparative advantage in cool environments. Homozygous Na also results in high embryo death and reduced hatchability and diminishes floating and flying capacity. Nevertheless, selective breeding of naked neck chickens for fertility traits enhances the performance and welfare of chickens in hot and humid regions. The comparative advantage of Na needs to be studied not only from a temperature perspective and under controlled experiment but also from humidity, body weight, feed intake (absolute and relative to body weight), age, agroecology insights, and under field condition. Due to the incomplete dominant expression pattern of Na, studies need to separately report their findings for homozygous and heterozygous naked neck chicken.

Abstract
The rational of conservation and sustainable use of indigenous chicken (IC) resources requires their morphobiometrical characterisation. This study morphobiometrically characterised the IC ecotypes in Rwanda. The morphological features and zoometric measurement data were randomly collected on 1670 mature IC of both sexes from five ecotypes of Rwanda. The nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U test were used in evaluating the effect of ecotypes on the qualitative morphological variables. Zoometric measurements were analysed with the PROC GLM of SAS. The findings showed that the feather morphology and distribution were mainly normal (98.3 and 84.40%, respectively) while feather colour was dominated with multicoloured (38.10%). The majority of the birds had red earlobe (49.20%), yellow shanks (53.80%) and single comb-type (71.70%). These parameters were different (p < 0.05) between the ecotypes. Bodyweight and linear body measurements were highly different (P < 0.001) between ecotypes. Differences associated with sex (P < 0.001) were observed in body weight and linear body measurements. The interaction between ecotype and sex significantly (P < 0.001) influenced body weight, body length, shank length, comb length, comb height, wattle length, chest circumference, neck length and wingspan. The IC ecotypes in Rwanda were found to be diverse morphobiometrically both in quantitative and qualitative traits. These variations provide a foundation for classification of the chicken into breeds.

Abstract
Simple Summary It was hypothesized that naked neck chickens could have a lower methionine requirement according to their reduced feather coverage. The hypothesis was examined by nitrogen balance studies and non-linear model application for estimating methionine requirement data of naked neck chickens. It was concluded that naked neck birds do not require less methionine than normally-feathered birds. Abstract Methionine (Met) requirement studies with homozygous (Na/Na) and heterozygous (Na/na) naked neck meat type chicken utilized 144 birds of average weight (50% each genotype and sex) within two N balance experiments involving both the starter (d10–20) and grower period (d25–35). The birds were randomly allotted to five experimental diets with graded protein supply and Met as the limiting amino acid. The proportion of native feed protein sources (soy protein concentrate, maize, wheat, fishmeal and wheat gluten) was kept constant to ensure a uniform protein quality in all diets. The Met requirement depending on genotype, sex, age period and growth performance (protein deposition) was estimated using a non-linear modeling procedure of N utilization in monogastric animals. On average, 0.47% (Na/Na) and 0.45% (Na/na) dietary Met was established as adequate in the starter diet, as well as 0.37% (Na/Na) and 0.36% (Na/na) Met in the grower diet for both of the sexes. In conclusion, the Met requirement of the naked neck chicken is not significantly different from its normally-feathered counterparts. In addition, the low feather production was not reflected by reduced requirement for Met in naked neck birds. However, these conclusions are valid only at the given Met:Cys ratio (1:1) in the experimental diets.

Abstract
An 8-week trial was conducted between March and May (hot-dry season) to determine effects of water temperature, feather clipping and aspirin on egg production of chickens. The treatments tested were hens given ordinary drinking water (control), cool water (100 g ice block per L) and aspirin (0.3 mg per L of ordinary water) and hens whose feathers were clipped (about two thirds of body feathers clipped). At 32 weeks of age, 120 Lohmann brown layer chickens of similar live weights were randomly divided into 12 groups of ten hens each and assigned to the treatments in triplicate using a completely randomized design. Feed and water were given ad libitum. Data included feed intake, water consumption, hen-day egg production and egg weight. Ambient house temperature, hen's cloacal temperature and water temperature were monitored daily during the experimental period. Mean daily ambient temperature increased from 28.4 to 35.0 °C during the study period with consequent increase in cloacal temperatures (40.31 to 41.18 °C) of hens, ordinary drinking water and cool water. None of the treatments had any significant (P > 0.05) effects on feed intake and water consumption of the birds. Hens given cool water produced more (P < 0.05) eggs and better (P < 0.05) feed efficiency than hens assigned to other treatments. Mean egg weight of each treatment was similar (P > 0.05). It is concluded that the provision of cool water in a hot-dry climate had a beneficial effect on egg laying performance of chickens.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the daily variations in the thermoregulatory behavior of 4- to 6-week-old naked neck broilers (Label Rouge) in an equatorial semi-arid environment. A total of 220 birds were monitored for 5 days starting at 0600 hours and ending at 1800 hours. The period of observation was divided into classes of hours (C H). The observed behaviors were as follows: feed and water intake, wing-spreading, sitting or lying, and beak-opening. A total of 14,300 behavioral data values were registered. In C H 2 (0900 hours to 1100 hours) and 3 (1200 hours to 1500 hours), the greatest average body surface temperature was recorded (34.67 ± 0.25 °C and 35.12 ± 0.22 °C, respectively). The C H had an effect on the exhibition of all behaviors with the exception of the water intake behavior. Feed intake was more frequent in C H 1 (0600 hours to 0800 hours) and 4 (1600 hours to 1800 hours). In C H 2 and 3, the highest frequency of sitting or lying behavior was observed. Beak-opening and wing-spreading behaviors occurred more frequently in C H 3 where the body surface temperature (35.12 ± 0.22 °C), radiant heat load (519.38 ± 2.22 W m(-2)), and enthalpy (82.74 ± 0.36 kJ kg(-1) of dry air) reached maximum recorded averages. Thus, it can be concluded that naked neck broilers adjust their behavior in response to daily variations in the thermal environment. Wing-spreading and beak-opening behaviors are important adaptive responses to the thermal challenges posed by the equatorial semi-arid environment.

Abstract
In semi-arid areas of Southern Africa, dehydration can compromise the performance and welfare of local chickens, particularly during the growing period when confinement is curtailed and birds are left to scavenge for feed and water. The effect of water restriction on the growth performance was compared in Naked Neck (NNK) and Ovambo (OVB) chickens that are predominant in Southern Africa. A total of 54 eight-wk-old pullets each of NNK and OVB chickens with an initial average weight of 641±10 g/bird were randomly assigned to three water intake treatments, each having six birds for 8 wk. The water restriction treatments were ad libitum, 70% of ad libitum and 40% of ad libitum intake. Nine experimental pens with a floor space of 3.3 m(2) per strain were used. The pens were housed in an open-sided house with cement floor deep littered with a 20 cm layer of untreated wood shavings. Feed was provided ad libitum. Average daily water intake (ADWI), BW at 16 weeks of age (FBW), ADG, ADFI, feed conversion ratio (FCR) and water to feed ratios (WFR) were determined. Ovambo chickens had superior (p<0.05) FBW, ADG and ADWI than NNK chickens. Body weight of birds at 16 weeks of age, ADG, ADFI, ADWI, and WFR declined progressively (p<0.05) with increasing severity of water restriction while FCR values increased (p<0.05) as the severity of water restriction increased. Naked Neck chickens had better FCR at the 40% of ad libitum water intake level than Ovambo chickens. The dressing percentage per bird was higher in water restricted birds than those on ad libitum water consumption, irrespective of strain. Heart weight was significantly lower in birds on 40% of ad libitum water intake than those on ad libitum and 70% of ad libitum water intake, respectively. In conclusion, NNK chickens performed better than OVB chickens under conditions of water restriction and would be ideal to raise for meat and egg production in locations where water shortages are a major challenge.

Abstract
This research was conducted to determine the effect of heat stress on the nutritional metabolism and productivity of egg-laying shelducks. Healthy shelducks (n=120) in the early laying stage (uniform body weights and normal feed intakes) were randomly assigned to two identical climate chambers and exposed to constant high temperature (34°C) or control temperature (23°C) for 28d. The heat-exposed ducks had reduced feed intakes and laying rates (P<0.05), increased frequency of panting and spreading wings and dull featheration; egg weight, eggshell thickness and strength, and Haugh unit also decreased and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of egg yolk increased (P<0.05). Compared with the control ducks, the plasma concentrations of HCO3(-), phosphorus, glucose, thyroxine and activities of glutamic-pyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase were decreased, while there were increased concentrations of corticosterone (P<0.05). The content of MDA and lactate in plasma and liver was greater in heat-exposed than in control ducks, but superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), total antioxidant enzymes (T-AOC) activities and glutathione (GSH) contents were less. The expression of HSP70 gene expression in the liver was increased in heat-stressed ducks. The relative weight of oviduct, number of large ovarian follicles, length of the oviduct all decreased (P<0.05) in heat-treated ducks, as did expression of carbonic anhydrase and calcium binding protein genes in the shell gland as a result of heat stress. In summary, heat stress decreased the productivity of ducks, which related to reduced feed intake, protein synthesis, endocrine dysfunction, less antioxidant capacity, and derangement of calcium and phosphorous balance.

Abstract
1. Rectal or core body temperature was determined in a study to examine the effects of fasting in modern meat type broilers at three stages of growth, namely d 19, 33 and 47. 2. There were two treatment groups: fed with feed available ad libitum and fasted. Rectal temperatures were determined at noon (1200 h). At that time, feed was removed from the fasted group. The body temperatures were then determined again after 6, 12, 18 and 24 h. 3. Core body temperatures decreased with fasting. The decrease was evident after as little as 6 h of fasting with a further decline evident by 12 h. 4. Accompanying the decrease in body temperature with fasting there were decreases in the venous concentrations of carbon dioxide in the blood and sodium in the plasma. 5. The decrease in both body temperature and carbon dioxide presumably reflects depressed metabolic rate. 6. Unexpectedly, the core body temperature increased progressively with age in the control fed group (d 19 = 41·04 ± 0·02°C, d 33 = 41·65 ± 0·05°C, d 47 = 42·21 ± 0·12°C). 7. In the fed control group, core body temperatures were reduced at night, when feeding activity would be anticipated to be greatly reduced.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) is a major problem experienced by the poultry industry during high-temperature conditions. The ability to manage the detrimental effects of HS can be attributed to multiple factors, including genetic background of flocks. The objective of the present study was to determine the genetic variation in HS effects on laying hens' physiological homeostasis. Ninety 28-wk-old White Leghorn hens of 2 strains were used: a commercial line of individually selected hens for high egg production, DeKalb XL (DXL), and a line of group-selected hens for high productivity and survivability, named kind gentle bird (KGB). Hens were randomly paired by strain and assigned to hot or control treatment for 14 d. Physical and physiological parameters were analyzed at d 8 and 14 posttreatment. Compared with controls, HS increased hen's core body temperature (P < 0.05) and decreased BW (P < 0.05) at d 8 and 14. Heat shock protein 70 concentrations in the liver were greater in hens exposed to HS (P < 0.05). Compared with DXL hens, KGB hens had higher heat shock protein 70 concentrations (P < 0.05). The hens' liver weight decreased following HS, with less of a response in the KGB line (P < 0.05). The data indicate HS has detrimental effects on the physiology of laying hens due to genetic variations. These data provide evidence that is valuable for determining genetic interventions for laying hens under HS.

Abstract
The objectives of this work were to assess alternative linear reaction norm (RN) models for genetic evaluation of Angus cattle in Brazil. That is, we investigated the interaction between genotypes and continuous descriptors of the environmental variation to examine evidence of genotype by environment interaction (G×E) in post-weaning BW gain (PWG) and to compare the environmental sensitivity of national and imported Angus sires. Data were collected by the Brazilian Angus Improvement Program from 1974 to 2005 and consisted of 63,098 records and a pedigree file with 95,896 animals. Six models were implemented using Bayesian inference and compared using the Deviance Information Criterion (DIC). The simplest model was M(1), a traditional animal model, which showed the largest DIC and hence the poorest fit when compared with the 4 alternative RN specifications accounting for G×E. In M(2), a 2-step procedure was implemented using the contemporary group posterior means of M(1) as the environmental gradient, ranging from -92.6 to +265.5 kg. Moreover, the benefits of jointly estimating all parameters in a 1-step approach were demonstrated by M(3). Additionally, we extended M(3) to allow for residual heteroskedasticity using an exponential function (M(4)) and the best fitting (smallest DIC) environmental classification model (M(5)) specification. Finally, M(6) added just heteroskedastic residual variance to M(1). Heritabilities were less at harsh environments and increased with the improvement of production conditions for all RN models. Rank correlations among genetic merit predictions obtained by M(1) and by the best fitting RN models M(3) (homoskedastic) and M(5) (heteroskedastic) at different environmental levels ranged from 0.79 and 0.81, suggesting biological importance of G×E in Brazilian Angus PWG. These results suggest that selection progress could be optimized by adopting environment-specific genetic merit predictions. The PWG environmental sensitivity of imported North American origin bulls (0.046 ± 0.009) was significantly larger (P < 0.05) than that of local sires (0.012 ± 0.013). Moreover, PWG of progeny of imported sires exceeded that of native sires in medium and superior production levels. On the other hand, Angus cattle locally selected in Brazil tended to be more robust to environmental changes and hence be more suitable when production environments for potential progeny is uncertain.

Abstract
Hot conditions decrease the difference between ambient temperature (AT) and the average temperature of the body surface. A smaller difference reduces the rate of sensible heat loss of excessive internal heat, elevates the body temperature (BT), and may lead to mortality during heat waves. Under conditions of chronic heat, broilers avoid lethal BT elevation by reducing their feed intake; consequently, growth rate and meat yield are lower. Practices to avoid hot conditions are costly, whereas breeding for heat tolerance offers a sustainable approach. Being featherless was shown to provide heat tolerance; this was reevaluated in experimental broilers with a growth rate similar to that of contemporary commercial broilers. In experiment 1, 26 featherless birds and 49 feathered siblings (sibs) were reared at warm AT and exposed to moderate and acute heat waves. The featherless birds maintained normal BT under a moderate heat wave, with a slight elevation under an acute heat wave, and only 1 bird died. In contrast, the heat waves led to a significant elevation in BT of the feathered sibs, and 34% of them died. In experiment 2, featherless broilers were compared with feathered sibs and commercial broilers at 2 AT treatments: a constant temperature of 25°C (control AT) or a constant temperature of 35°C (hot AT). The birds were reared to 46 or 53 d at the control and hot AT, respectively, and the measured traits included BT, growth, and weight of the whole body and carcass parts (breast meat, legs, wings, and skin). At the hot AT, only the featherless broilers maintained a normal BT; their mean d 46 BW (2,031g) was significantly higher than that of birds maintained at the control AT, and it increased to 2,400 g on d 53, much higher than the corresponding means of all feathered broilers (approximately 1,700 g only). Featherless broilers had significantly higher breast meat yield (approximately 20% in both AT), lower skin weight, and supposedly better wing quality. These results confirmed that being featherless improved the livability and performance of fast-growing broilers in hot conditions and suggests that introduction of the featherless phenotype into commercial broiler stocks would facilitate highly efficient yet low-cost production of broiler meat under hot conditions.

Abstract
Variation in haematological parameters of Nigerian native chickens was studied using 60 clinically normal frizzle-feathered, naked-neck, and normal-feathered native chickens. These included red blood cell count, haemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cell count, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, serum glucose, urea, cholesterol, albumin, globulin and creatinine. Normal-feathered birds had higher (p<0.05) mean values compared to frizzled and native neck genotypes except for albumin, red blood and white blood cells, and mean cell haemoglobin concentration. Males generally had higher mean values than their female counterparts across all genotypes. Correlation coefficients among the parameters were significant (p<0.001) with r values ranging from 0.26 between red blood cell and mean corpuscular haemoglobin to 0.92 between red blood cell and cholesterol. Sufficient genetic variation therefore exists for haematological parameters among Nigerian native chickens that may represent indicator traits for further study. However, the application of molecular tools will provide better understanding and application of these differences.

Abstract
High ambient temperature is a major factor for diminishing reproductive performance of broiler parent stocks. Homozygous naked neck (NaNa) broilers, which possess a higher adaptation to heat due to a reduction of feather coverage, exhibited higher growth rates and meat yield. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of genotype x temperature interactions on the reproduction traits of heavy broiler dams caused by different feathering genotypes induced by naked neck gene (Na). In an additional experiment, the effect of Na gene on embryonic activity using oxygen uptake was examined. Normal-feathered (nana) and NaNa hens were maintained in separate cages under high (30 degrees C) and moderate (19 degrees C) temperatures, with RH of 55% from the 18th to 72nd week of age. Egg production, fertility, hatchability, and the time of embryonic mortality were recorded. In comparison with the NaNa genotype, the nana hens showed clear performance depressions under thermal stress with respect to egg production (63%), fertility (20%), hatchability, and number of chicks (72%). Under temperate ambient temperature, there were no differences in laying performance and fertility between both genotypes, with the exception of hatchability due to an increase in embryonic mortality as a result of the Na gene and consequently in the complex trait number of chicks. The early embryonic mortality of eggs laid by nana hens exposed to heat stress is clearly higher than of eggs by nana hens kept under temperate ambient temperature. In contrast, there were no significant differences in early embryonic mortality of eggs of NaNa birds kept under high and temperate environmental temperatures, demonstrating that heat stress leads to reduced early embryonic livability. Embryonic mortality in the late developing stage is significantly increased, and the homozygous genotype is much more affected than the heterozygous embryo. The possible reason for the Na gene-induced embryonic mortality is still not clear. In this investigation, it is shown that the phenomenon cannot be explained by the oxygen consumption.

Abstract
Alternative poultry production with special reference to free range broilers has increased significantly since the nineties in many regions of the world. Numerous factors influence the productive performance of this type of broilers: genotype (namely the use of naked neck animals), feeding and access to an outdoor area. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of each of these factors on the productive performance of free range broilers under commercial rearing conditions. A total of 3200, day old chicks of both sexes from naked neck and normally feathered genotypes were used in this trial. After a joint initiation phase, animals were divided into four different treatments with the combination of two concentrates (high vs low energy content) and management (access to outside park or not). Experiment lasted a total of 12 weeks. Live weight date was recorded weekly and a samples of animals from the trial were sacrificed at the age of 8, 10 and 12 weeks, when carcass characteristics were determined. Besides sex, the only factor that seems to affect growth characteristics was genotype as naked neck animals had poorer growth rates than normally feathered. No effect was detected on carcass yields and percentages of carcass components for any of the variables. From the data presented in this trial the practises associated with free range production are of relative inconsequence to the technical animal production parameters and can only be justified by a pressing need to differentiate these products from standard poultry products in what concerns both welfare issues and meat characteristics. The results also indicate that genetic material from alternative poultry production in Europe can be a useful option in poultry production development projects in the tropics.

Abstract
Under hot conditions, contemporary commercial broilers do not reach their full genetic potential for growth rate, body weight (BW), or breast meat yield because dissipation of their excessively produced internal (metabolic) heat is hindered by the feathers. Therefore, it was hypothesized that heat stress can be alleviated by using the naked-neck gene (Na) or the featherless gene (sc). The study consisted of 4 experimental genetic groups (fully feathered, heterozygous naked neck, homozygous naked neck, featherless), progeny of the same double-heterozygous parents (Na/na +/sc), and commercial broilers. Birds from all 5 groups were brooded together until d 21 when one-half of the birds from each group were moved to hot conditions (constant 35 degrees C), and the others remained under comfortable conditions (constant 25 degrees C). Individual BW was recorded from hatch to slaughter at d 45 and 52 at 25 and 35 degrees C, respectively, when breast meat, rear part, heart, and spleen weights were recorded. Body temperature was recorded weekly from d 14 to 42. Feather coverage significantly affected the thermoregulatory capacity of the broilers under hot conditions. With reduced feather coverage (naked-neck), and more so without any feathers (featherless), the birds at 35 degrees C were able to minimize the elevation in body temperature. Consequently, only the featherless birds exhibited similar growth and BW under the 2 temperature treatments. The naked-neck birds at 35 degrees C showed only a marginal advantage over their fully feathered counterparts, indicating that 20 to 40% reduction in feather coverage provided only limited tolerance to the heat stress imposed by hot conditions. Breast meat yield of the featherless birds was much greater (3.5% of BW, approximately 25% advantage) than that of their partly feathered and fully feathered counterparts and the commercial birds under hot conditions. The high breast meat yield (at both 25 and 35 degrees C) of the featherless broilers suggests that the saved feather-building nutrients and greater oxygen-carrying capacity contribute to their greater breast meat yield. Because of these results, further research on genetically heat-tolerant broilers should focus on the featherless phenotype.

Abstract
This study compares laying performances between two environments of dwarf laying hen lines segregating for the naked neck mutation (NA locus), a selected dwarf line of brown-egg layers and its control line. Layers with one of the three genotypes at the NA locus were produced from 11 sires from the control line and 12 sires from the selected line. Two hatches produced 216 adult hens in Taiwan and 297 hens in France. Genetic parameters for laying traits were estimated in each environment and the ranking of sire breeding values was compared between environments. Laying performance was lower, and mortality was higher in Taiwan than in France. The line by environment interaction was highly significant for body weight at 16 weeks, clutch length and egg number, with or without Box-Cox transformation. The selected line was more sensitive to environmental change but in Taiwan it could maintain a higher egg number than the control line. Estimated heritability values in the selected line were higher in France than in Taiwan, but not for all the traits in the control line. The rank correlations between sire breeding values were low within the selected line and slightly higher in the control line. A few sire families showed a good ranking in both environments, suggesting that some families may adapt better to environmental change.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of combining the naked neck gene with a genetic background that has been optimized for feed efficiency of laying hens at moderate temperature. In 1997, the naked neck gene was introduced into a line selected for low residual feed intake. In 2003, after 6 generations of introgression, 8 males and 56 females heterozygous for the NA*NA mutation were used to generate all 3 genotypes (NA*N/NA*N, NA*NA/NA*N, NA*NA/NA*NA), in 2 hatches, for rearing in Taiwan and France, respectively, at 3-wk intervals. Growth performance, anatomical traits, laying traits, and feed efficiency were recorded in each country. In addition, comb and rectal temperatures were measured in Taiwan. Performance was generally lower and mortality of laying hens was higher in Taiwan (11%) than in France (1%). Genotype x environment interactions were rare: genotype x environment was observed only for body weight at 10 wk of age and was close to significance for egg weight. The laying performance was significantly decreased in Taiwan by about 25%. The naked neck genotype had a negative effect on body weight and a positive effect of clutch length and egg weight. It also affected heat dissipation traits such as wattle length and rectal and surface temperature measurements. There was a clear additive and negative effect of the NA*NA mutation on rectal temperature. Feed intake and residual feed intake were increased in the homozygous carriers of the NA*NA mutation, which may improve heat tolerance of the low residual feed consumption (R-) line. Feed efficiency tended to be better in NA*NA/NA*NA hens in both environments. Thus, the introduction of the NA*NA mutation in the R- background appeared to be favorable from the viewpoint of feed efficiency, but it did not improve laying performance in a subtropical environment. Other factors than temperature, such as diet composition and lighting regimen, may be involved.

Abstract
Elite populations of farm animals under genetic selection are often maintained in high hygiene conditions, yet the commercial populations may be raised in, and are expected to perform well in, environments of varied hygiene levels. This presents special challenges to genetically improve those traits for which genotype by environment interactions are important. Twelve immune-related genes were studied for associations with general mortality and other performance traits in 3 elite commercial broiler chicken lines raised in high and low hygiene environments. The genes were toll-like receptor 4, MD-2 (accessory' protein of TLR4), interferon-gamma, transforming growth factor-beta3, inducible nitric oxide synthase, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, interleukin-2, caspase-1, inhibitor of apoptosis protein-1, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand, chicken B-cell marker, and bone morphogenetic protein-7. From a total of 56 identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in 12 genes, 14 SNP that had moderate allelic frequencies in at least 2 of the 3 lines were typed in about 100 progeny-tested sires from each of 3 elite commercial broiler chicken lines using restriction fragment length polymorphism techniques and then used in association analysis. The traits measured on the progeny (total progeny = 145,467) were: mortality from hatching to 14 d and from 14 to 40 d of age, BW at 7 and 40 d of age, feed conversion, ultrasound breast depth, percentage of breast, eviscerated carcass weight, twisted legs or evident tibial dyschondroplasia, x-ray-inspection-based subclinical or incipient development of tibial dyschondroplasia, curly or crooked toes or bowed legs, oxygen content of blood, and female's antibody titer to infectious bursal disease virus at 27 wk. Association analyses were conducted with allele and haplotype substitution effect models using progeny mean data adjusted for fixed and mate effects as sire trait records. Ten of the 12 genes had SNP associations with at least 1 trait. Most detected effects were with mortality and growth traits. Most gene-SNP trait associations varied by genetic line or with environment. These results indicate that associations of candidate genes with important broiler traits can be identified in multiple environments, and they offer a potential for the implementation of marker-assisted selection for traits expressed in the environment in which the commercial broiler needs to perform. The effects of these immune-related candidate genes, however, are complex and affected by genetic background and environment.

Abstract
Four levels of nonphytate P (NPP; 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5%; total P = 0.46, 0.56, 0.66, and 0.76%) and two temperatures (25 and 37 degrees C) were evaluated in chicks from 8 to 22 d. In experiment 1, crossbred male chicks (New Hampshire x Columbian) housed at 25 degrees C increased weight gain at all increasing NPP levels, but chicks exposed to 37 degrees C did not show increased weight gain beyond 0.3% NPP. In experiment 2, environmental temperature was not increased until d 15. Weight gain of crossbred male chicks fed the 0.2% NPP diet was similar at both temperatures, but chicks exposed to 37 degrees C had lower weight gains than chicks housed at 25 degrees C for all other NPP levels. On d 22 to 24, chicks that had been housed at 25 degrees C and fed 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5% NPP were moved to the 37 degrees C chamber to evaluate heat stress on older chicks. Chicks fed the 0.2% NPP diet showed 35% mortality within 6 h. In experiment 3, both male commercial (Ross x Ross) and crossbred chicks that had been housed at 25 degrees C and fed 0.2% NPP from 8 to 22 d showed increased signs of severe heat distress when exposed to 37 degrees C on d 22. Our results suggest that the NPP requirement for growth of 8-to-22-d-old chicks may be reduced by high temperature. However, a NPP deficiency may result in increased mortality or severe heat distress in older chicks that are exposed to an acute increase in temperature.

Abstract
Males and females, selected from a commercial line to represent its phenotypic variation for BW, were mated with similarly ranked mates to produce sire families representing a wide genetic variation in potential growth rate (GR). Following 5 wk of rearing at normal ambient temperatures, birds representing all sire families were exposed to cold (Days 37 to 47, Trial 1) or hot (Days 43 to 48, Trial 2) environments. Birds exhibiting ascites syndrome (AS) in the cold environment (Trial 1) were counted, and the incidence of AS (%AS) per family was calculated. Sire families' least-square means of BW at 37 d of age in Trial 1 and BW at 43 d of age in Trial 2 represented the families' potential GR (i.e., GR under normal conditions). A significant positive correlation was found between potential GR and %AS (r = 0.479, Trial 1), indicating that families with higher potential GR under normal conditions are more likely to suffer from AS under cold stress, compared to families with lower GR. Heat stress markedly reduced weight gain in all families (Trial 2); however, the genetic potential GR was negatively correlated with actual GR under heat stress (r = -0.411, Trial 2). Since offspring of the same sire families were exposed to the two stressful environmental conditions, correlations between sire families' means under the two environments could be calculated. A negative correlation was found between growth under heat stress (Trial 2) and %AS (Trial 1) (r = -0.439), indicating that families whose GR is more depressed under heat stress are more likely to suffer from AS under cold stress. These results suggest that the two stress responses may share similar control of the genetic variation in each trait and their negative genetic correlation with potential GR.

Abstract
One cycle of high-intensity selection on BW was conducted to study correlated effects on performance under high ambient temperature (AT). From a large flock of a commercial sire-line, 3 males and 15 females with the highest BW at 35 d of age were mated and produced a group of 120 BW-selected chicks. Three average-BW males and 15 average-BW females from the same flock were mated to produce a control group of 120 chicks. On Day 17, the two groups were equally divided between two temperature-controlled chambers and housed in individual cages. One chamber was set to a normal AT (NAT; constant 22 C) and the second chamber to high AT (HAT; constant 32 C). Under NAT, the relative advantage of the selected broilers over the controls did not change from 17 to 42 d of age, averaging about 15% for BW gain and 9.7% for feed consumption. These differences were halved under HAT from Days 17 to 28 and were reversed from 28 to 42 d of age, when the selected broilers consumed significantly less feed and gained less BW than the controls. Water-to-feed ratio was measured in each AT treatment. From 28 to 42 d of age, averaged over the two groups, birds under HAT consumed 2.5 g water/g of feed compared to only 1.5 g water/g feed under NAT. The diminished superiority of the selected broilers under HAT led to a substantial genotype-by-environment interaction involving high AT and within-stock genetic differences in growth rate. It appears that broilers selected for rapid growth under optimal conditions do not achieve their genetic potential under high AT. Thus, specific indicators of adaptation to heat, possibly water consumption or body temperature, should be added to commercial selection for rapid growth to improve broiler performance in hot climates.

Abstract
High ambient temperatures (AT) reduce feed consumption (FC) and BW in broilers, thereby leading to lower efficiency and profitability of poultry meat production in hot climates. These negative effects have been found to be more pronounced in chicken lines with high BW. The effects of high AT were investigated in a broiler population segregating for the Dw gene and, thus, consisting of normal-sized and dwarf broilers, which differed markedly in BW but had the same genetic background. All chicks were reared under normal AT (constant 22 C) up to Day 44, when AT was gradually raised, over 24 h, to 32 C and then held constant to Day 49. The dwarf chicks had 23% lower BW and BW gain (WG) at all ages until Day 44. During the first 24 h at 32 C, FC of the dwarf broilers was reduced by 35% and their average WG was 7.6 g/d, whereas FC of their normal-sized counterparts was reduced by 46% and they lost BW (average WG: -42.1 g/d). Thereafter, however, the dwarf and normal broilers adapted similarly to the chronic heat stress, with FC and WG of both phenotypes averaging 72 and 35%, respectively, of the corresponding means at normal AT. The two phenotypes had similar body temperatures at normal AT, but following its increase, body temperature in the normal-sized broilers rose by 1.14 C, whereas in the dwarf ones it rose by only 0.47 C. This finding suggested better thermoregulation during acute heat stress, apparently due to the latter's smaller body size. Under chronic heat stress, however, FC and WG were similarly reduced in the dwarf and normal broilers. We concluded that the dwarf gene has no value with regards to broiler tolerance to chronic heat stress, either for production or as a model.
