Abstract
Heat stress is a threat that can lead to significant financial losses in the production of poultry in the world's tropical and arid regions. The degree of heat stress (mild, moderate, severe) experienced by poultry depends mainly on thermal radiation, humidity, the animal's thermoregulatory ability, metabolic rate, age, intensity, and duration of the heat stress. Contemporary commercial broiler chickens have a rapid metabolism, which makes them produce higher heat and be prone to heat stress. The negative effect of heat stress on poultry birds' physiology, health, production, welfare, and behaviors are reviewed in detail in this work. The appropriate mitigation strategies for heat stress in poultry are equally explored in this review. Interestingly, each of these strategies finds its applicability at different stages of a poultry's lifecycle. For instance, gene mapping prior to breeding and genetic selection during breeding are promising tools for developing heat-resistant breeds. Thermal conditioning during embryonic development or early life enhances the ability of birds to tolerate heat during their adult life. Nutritional management such as dietary manipulations, nighttime feeding, and wet feeding often, applied with timely and effective correction of environmental conditions have been proven to ameliorate the effect of heat stress in chicks and adult birds. As long as the climatic crises persist, heat stress may continue to require considerable attention; thus, it is imperative to explore the current happenings and pay attention to the future trajectory of heat stress effects on poultry production.

Abstract
Introduction The uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are involved in lipid metabolism and belong to a family of mitochondrial anionic transporters. In poultry, only one UCP homologue has been identified and experimentally shown to be associated with growth, feed conversion ratio, and abdominal fat according to its predominant expression in bird muscles. In endotherm birds, cell metabolic efficiency can be tuned by the rate of mitochondrial coupling. Thus, avUCP may be a key contributor to controlling metabolic rate during particular environmental changes. Methods This study aimed to perform a set of in-silico investigations primarily focused on the structural, biological, and biomimetic functions of avUCP. Thereby, using in silico genome analyses among 8 avian species (chicken, turkey, swallow, manakin, sparrow, wagtail, pigeon, and mallard) and a series of bioinformatic approaches, we provide phylogenetic inference and comparative genomics of avUCPs and investigate whether sequence variation can alter coding sequence characteristics, the protein structure, and its biological features. Complementarily, a combination of literature mining and prediction approaches was also applied to predict the gene networks of avUCP to identify genes, pathways, and biological crosstalk associated with avUCP function. Results The results showed the evolutionary alteration of UCP proteins in different avian species. Uncoupling proteins in avian species are highly conserved trans membrane proteins as seen by sequence alignment, physio-chemical parameters, and predicted protein structures. Taken together, avUCP has the potential to be considered a functional marker for the identification of cell metabolic state, thermogenesis, and oxidative stress caused by cold, heat, fasting, transfer, and other chemical stimuli stresses in birds. It can also be deduced that avUCP, in migrant or domestic birds, may increase heat stress resistance by reducing fatty acid transport/b-oxidation and thermoregulation alongside antioxidant defense mechanisms. The predicted gene network for avUCP highlighted a cluster of 21 genes involved in response to stress and 28 genes related to lipid metabolism and the proton buffering system. Finally, among 11 enriched pathways, crosstalk of 5 signaling pathways including MAPK, adipocytokine, mTOR, insulin, ErbB, and GnRH was predicted, indicating a possible combination of positive or negative feedback among pathways to regulate avUCP functions. Discussion Genetic selection for fast-growing commercial poultry has unintentionally increased susceptibility to many kinds of oxidative stress, and so avUCP could be considered as a potential candidate gene for balancing energy expenditure and reactive oxygen species production, especially in breeding programs. In conclusion, avUCP can be introduced as a pleiotropic gene that requires the contribution of regulatory genes, hormones, pathways, and genetic crosstalk to allow its finely-tuned function.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) affects pig performance, health and welfare, resulting in a financial burden to the pig industry. Pigs have a limited number of functional sweat glands and their thermoregulatory mechanisms used to maintain body temperature, are challenged by HS to maintain body temperature. The genetic selection of genotypes tolerant to HS is a promising long-term (adaptation) option that could be combined with other measures at the production system level. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the genetics of thermoregulation in pigs. It also discusses the different phenotypes that can be used in genetic studies, as well as the variability in thermoregulation between pig breeds and the inheritance of traits related to thermoregulation. This review also considers on-going challenges to face for improving heat tolerance in pigs.

Abstract
Thermal conditioning has been introduced as a cost-effective way to improve performance and thermotolerance in broilers. However, since all the trials were performed under various experimental conditions, it appears difficult to draw general conclusions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to quantify the response of broilers to thermal conditioning through a meta-analysis approach. A literature search was conducted on Scopus, PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science, and Google scholar in December 2020. A restricted maximum likelihood random effect model was used to pool the effect sizes from the body weight gain (BWG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and body temperature (Tb). BWG, FI, and Tb were computed using the standardized mean difference (SMD) while FCR was computed using mean differences (MD) with a 95% confidence interval (IC). Growth performances were evaluated during the thermoneutral conditions while Tb was evaluated after either acute or chronic heat stress after early age thermal conditioning. A total of 17 studies were included in the dataset. Thermal conditioning significantly increased BWG (SMD = 0.139, IC = 0.0372-0.2407, P = 0.0074) and FI (SMD = 0.292, IC = 0.108-0.476, P = 0.0019) compared with the control. Additionally, subgroup analysis revealed that overall Tb was significantly reduced under acute heat stress (SMD = -0.455, IC = -0.718 to -0.192, P < 0.001) but not affected during chronic heat stress (SMD = -0.115, IC = -0.651 to -0.420, P = 0.6729). In conclusion, thermal conditioning significantly increased the broiler's BWG and FI under thermoneutral conditions and can help in reducing Tb under acute heat stress.

Abstract
Effects of increased summer temperatures on poultry production are becoming more pronounced due to global warming, so it is important to consider approaches that might reduce heat stress in chickens. Thermal conditioning in chickens in the neonatal period can improve thermotolerance and reduce body temperature increases when birds are exposed to high ambient temperature later in life. The objective of this study was to investigate physiological and molecular changes associated with heat production and hence body temperature regulation under high ambient temperatures in thermally conditioned chicks. Three-day-old broiler chicks (Chunky) were thermally conditioned by exposure to a high ambient temperature (40°C) for 12 h while control chicks were kept at 30°C. Four days after the treatment, both groups were exposed to 40°C for 15 or 90 min. The increase in rectal temperature during 90 min of exposure to a high ambient temperature was less in thermally conditioned than control chicks. At 15-min of re-exposure treatment, gene expression for uncoupling protein and carnitine palmitoyletransferase 1, key molecules in thermogenesis and fatty acid oxidation, were significantly higher in pectoral muscle of control chicks but not conditioned chicks. Hepatic argininosuccinate synthase (ASS) decreased and hepatic argininosuccinate lyase (ASL) increased after reexposure to a high temperature. The concentrations of hepatic arginosuccinic acid, and ASS and ASL expression, were upregulated in conditioned chicks compared with the control chicks, indicating activity of the urea cycle could be enhanced to trap more energy to reduce heat production in conditioned chicks. These results suggest thermal conditioning can reduce the increase in heat production in muscles of chickens that occurs in high ambient temperatures to promote sensible heat loss. Conditioning may also promote energy trapping process in the liver by altering the heat production system, resulting in an alleviation of the excessive rise of body temperature.

Abstract
Heat stress is one of the major environmental stressors in the poultry industry resulting in substantial economic loss. Heat stress causes several physiological changes, such as oxidative stress, acid-base imbalance, and suppressed immunocompetence, which leads to increased mortality and reduced feed efficiency, body weight, feed intake, and egg production, and also affects meat and egg quality. Several strategies, with a variable degree of effectiveness, have been implemented to attenuate heat stress in poultry. Nutritional strategies, such as restricting the feed, wet or dual feeding, adding fat in diets, supplementing vitamins, minerals, osmolytes, and phytochemicals, have been widely studied and found to reduce the deleterious effects of heat stress. Furthermore, the use of naked neck (Na) and frizzle (F) genes in certain breed lines have also gained massive attention in recent times. However, only a few of these strategies have been widely used in the poultry industry. Therefore, developing heat-tolerant breed lines along with proper management and nutritional approach needs to be considered for solving this problem. Thus, this review highlights the scientific evidence regarding the effects of heat stress on poultry health and performances, and potential mitigation strategies against heat stress in broiler chickens and laying hens.

Abstract
Heat stress affects pig health, welfare, and production, and thus the economic viability of the pig sector in many countries. Breeding for heat tolerance is a complex issue, increasingly important due to climate change and the development of pig production in tropical areas. Characterizing genetic determinism of heat tolerance would help building selection schemes dedicated to high performance in tropical areas. The main objective of our study was to estimate the genetic parameters for production and thermoregulation traits in two highly related growing pig populations reared in temperate (TEMP) or tropical humid (TROP) environment. Pigs came from a backcross population between Large White (LW, heat sensitive) and Creole (CR, heat tolerant) pigs. Phenotypic data were obtained on a total of 1,297 pigs using the same procedures in both environments, for body weight (BW, at weeks 11 and 23), daily feed intake (ADFI), backfat thickness (BFT, at weeks 19 and 23), cutaneous temperature (CT, at weeks 19 and 23), and rectal temperature (RT, at weeks 19, 21, and 23). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) were computed for the whole test period (11 to 23 wk). Criteria comparing the fits to the data revealed genotype × environment (G × E) interactions for most traits but not for FCR. The variance components were obtained using two different methods, a restricted maximum likelihood method and a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo method, considering that traits are either similar or different in each environment. Regardless of the method, heritability estimates for production traits were moderate to high, except for FCR (lower than 0.18). Heritability estimates for RT were low to moderate, ranging from 0.04 to 0.34. The genetic correlations of each trait between environments generally differed from 1, except for FCR and ADG. For most thermoregulation traits, they also did not differ significantly from zero, suggesting that the main genetic bases of heat tolerance may vary in different environment. Within environments, the unfavorable genetic correlations between production traits and RT suggest an antagonism between the ability to maintain inner temperature and the ability to increase ADFI and ADG. However, greater RT were also associated to leaner pigs and better feed efficiency. Nevertheless, due to large inaccuracies of these estimations, larger cohorts would be needed to decide about the best breeding schemes to choose for tropical pig production.

Abstract
Effects of embryonic thermal manipulation (TM) on mRNA expressional levels and total antioxidant capacity of genes associated with heat-induced oxidative stress (NOX4, GpX2, SOD2, catalase, and AvUCP) in 2 breeds of broiler chicken were investigated. Fertile Cobb and Hubbard eggs (n = 1,200) were divided into 4 treatment groups: Cobb control, Cobb TM, Hubbard control, and Hubbard TM. Control groups were maintained under standard conditions (37.8°C; 56% relative humidity), whereas TM groups were incubated at 39°C and 65% relative humidity for 18 h a day from embryonic days (ED) 10 to 18. On post-hatch day 28, the broilers were subject to acute heat stress (AHS) at 40°C for 7 h. At certain intervals (0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 h), 12 chickens from each of the 4 groups were humanely euthanized, and liver samples were immediately isolated. During AHS, in both breeds, the mRNA expression levels of NOX4, GPx2, SOD2, and catalase in TM chickens were significantly lower than in controls, but AvUCP mRNA expression in the TM group was higher. The total antioxidant capacity and activity of superoxidase dismutase and catalase were significantly lower in the TM than in the control group in both breeds. The results of this study suggest that TM has a long-lasting effect on the acquisition of thermotolerance in 2 broiler chicken breeds as indicated by the reduction of system genes associated with heat-induced oxidative stress.

Abstract
Heat stress is one of the limiting factors negatively affecting pig production, health, and fertility. Characterizing genomic regions responsible for variation in HS tolerance would be useful in identifying important genetic factor(s) regulating physiological responses to HS. In the present study, we performed genome-wide association analyses for respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (TR), and skin temperature (TS) during HS in 214 crossbred gilts genotyped for 68,549 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) using the Porcine SNP 70K BeadChip. Considering the top 0.1% smoothed phenotypic variances explained by SNP windows, we detected 26, 26, 21, and 14 genes that reside within SNPs explaining the largest proportion of variance (top 25 SNP windows) and associated with change in RR (ΔRR) from thermoneutral (TN) conditions to HS environment, as well as the change in prepubertal TR (ΔTR), change in postpubertal ΔTR, and change in TS (ΔTS), respectively. The region between 28.85 Mb and 29.10 Mb on chromosome 16 explained about 0.05% of the observed variation for ΔRR. The growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene resides in this region and is associated with the HS response. The other important candidate genes associated with ΔRR (PAIP1, NNT, and TEAD4), ΔTR (LIMS2, TTR, and TEAD4), and ΔTS (ERBB4, FKBP1B, NFATC2, and ATP9A) have reported roles in the cellular stress response. The SNP explaining the largest proportion of variance and located within and in the vicinity of genes were related to apoptosis or cellular stress and are potential candidates that underlie the physiological response to HS in pigs.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters for thermoregulation traits and the relationships with performance of Large White lactating sows reared in a tropical humid climate. The thermoregulation traits were rectal temperature (RT), cutaneous temperature (CT) and respiratory rate (RR) during lactation measured in the afternoon (1200 h) and in the morning (0700 h). The production traits were sow's average daily feed intake (ADFI), litter BW gain (LBWg) and sow's proportion of BW change between farrowing and weaning (BWc). Complete data included 931 lactating performance on 329 Large White sows from the INRA experimental unit in Guadeloupe (French West Indies). Random regression models using linear spline functions were used for longitudinal data (RT, CT, RR and daily feed intake). Results showed that when ignoring values at the beginning and the end of lactation, the traits studied can be treated as the same trait throughout days of lactation, with fairly constant heritability and variance. However, largest heritabilities and genetic variances were estimated in mid-lactation. Heritability estimates on average performance during lactation were low to moderate for thermoregulation traits (0.35±0.09 for RT, 0.34±0.12 for CT and 0.39±0.13 for RR). Heritability estimates for production traits were 0.26±0.08 for ADFI, 0.20±0.07 for BWc and 0.31±0.09 for LBWg. Significant genetic correlations between thermoregulation traits and production traits were only obtained for ADFI and RR (0.35±0.12). From this study it can be concluded that thermoregulation traits are heritable, indicating that there are genetic differences in heat stress tolerance in lactating Large White sows.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of feed condition and breed on the level of DNA methylation for the uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3) gene, which is an important candidate gene for regulating intramuscular fat (IMF) content in chicken breast muscle, breast muscle of Daninghe (DNH) and Qingjiaoma (QJM) chickens under scatter-feed and captivity-feed conditions was analyzed. Using RNA sequencing, 47 and 113 candidate genes were determined to be related to feed conditions and breed, respectively, and 7 differentially expressed genes were confirmed by real-time quantitative PCR, including UCP3. The mRNA levels of UCP3 were significantly different between the 2 feed conditions. The DNA region from bp +1700 to +2459 of the UCP3 gene was studied using the bisulfite sequencing method and contained 46 methylation sites and 3 CpG islands. The results showed that the methylation level of this UCP3 region was lower in DNH chickens (0.77% to 0.88%, P = 0.012) and QJM chickens (0.88% to 0.91%, P = 0.20) under scatter-feed conditions than under captivity-feed conditions. The mean methylation level of UCP3 in DNH chickens was lower than that in QJM chickens under scatter-feed conditions (DNH to QJM, 0.77% to 0.88%, P = 0.007), which suggests that breed affects the mean methylation level of UCP3 under scatter-feed conditions. In summary, our findings suggest that feed condition and breed affect the methylation of UCP3 in chicken breast muscle.

Abstract
Fast-growing chickens have a limited ability to tolerate high temperatures. Thermal manipulation during embryogenesis (TM) has previously been shown to lower chicken body temperature (Tb) at hatching and to improve thermotolerance until market age, possibly resulting from changes in metabolic regulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of TM (12 h/d, 39.5°C, 65% RH from d 7 to 16 of embryogenesis vs. 37.8°C, 56% RH continuously) and of a subsequent heat challenge (32°C for 5 h at 34 d) on the mRNA expression of metabolic genes and cell signaling in the Pectoralis major muscle and the liver. Gene expression was analyzed by RT-qPCR in 8 chickens per treatment, characterized by low Tb in the TM groups and high Tb in the control groups. Data were analyzed using the general linear model of SAS considering TM and heat challenge within TM as main effects. TM had significant long-term effects on thyroid hormone metabolism by decreasing the muscle mRNA expression of deiodinase DIO3. Under standard rearing conditions, the expression of several genes involved in the regulation of energy metabolism, such as transcription factor PGC-1α, was affected by TM in the muscle, whereas for other genes regulating mitochondrial function and muscle growth, TM seemed to mitigate the decrease induced by the heat challenge. TM increased DIO2 mRNA expression in the liver (only at 21°C) and reduced the citrate synthase activity involved in the Krebs cycle. The phosphorylation level of p38 Mitogen-activated-protein kinase regulating the cell stress response was higher in the muscle of TM groups compared to controls. In conclusion, markers of energy utilization and growth were either changed by TM in the Pectoralis major muscle and the liver by thermal manipulation during incubation as a possible long-term adaptation limiting energy metabolism, or mitigated during heat challenge.

Abstract
Selection programs have enabled broiler chickens to gain muscle mass without similar enlargement of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems that are essential for thermoregulatory efficiency. Meat-type chickens cope with high ambient temperature by reducing feed intake and growth during chronic and moderate heat exposure. In case of acute heat exposure, a dramatic increase in morbidity and mortality can occur. In order to alleviate heat stress in the long term, research has recently focused on early thermal manipulation. Aimed at stimulation of long-term thermotolerance, the thermal manipulation of embryos is a method based on fine tuning of incubation conditions, taking into account the level and duration of increases in temperature and relative humidity during a critical period of embryogenesis. The consequences of thermal manipulation on the performance and meat quality of broiler chickens have been explored to ensure the potential application of this strategy. The physiological basis of the method is the induction of epigenetic and metabolic mechanisms that control body temperature in the long term. Early thermal manipulation can enhance poultry resistance to environmental changes without much effect on growth performance. This review presents the main strategies of early heat exposure and the physiological concepts on which these methods were based. The cellular mechanisms potentially underlying the adaptive response are discussed as well as the potential interest of thermal manipulation of embryos for poultry production.

Abstract
Cyclically cold incubation temperatures have been suggested as a means to improve resistance of broiler chickens to ascites; however, the underlying mechanisms are not known. Nine hundred eggs obtained from 48 wk Ross broiler breeders were randomly assigned to 2 incubation treatments: control I eggs were incubated at 37.6°C throughout, whereas for cold I eggs the incubation temperature was reduced by 1°C for 6 h daily from 10 to 18 d of incubation. Thereafter, chickens were reared at standard temperatures or under cold exposure that was associated or not with a postnatal cold acclimation at d 5 posthatch. At hatch, hepatic catalase activity and malondialdehyde content were measured. Serum thyroid hormone and triglyceride concentrations, and muscle expression of several genes involved in the regulation of energy metabolism and oxidative stress were also measured at hatch and 5 and 25 d posthatch. Cold incubation induced modifications in antioxidant pathways with higher catalase activity, but lower expression of avian uncoupling protein 3 at hatch. However, long-term enhancement in the expression of avian uncoupling protein 3 was observed, probably caused by an increase in the expression of the transcription factor peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α. These effects were not systematically associated with an increase in serum triiodothyronine concentrations that were observed only in chickens exposed to both cold incubation and later acclimation at 5 d with cold rearing. Our results suggest that these conditions of cyclically cold incubation resulted in the long-term in changes in antioxidant pathways and energy metabolism, which could enhance the health of chickens reared under cold conditions.

Abstract
Lines of evidence suggested that systems involved in the regulation of the stress responses and energy homeostasis are highly integrated. Because cerulenin, the natural antibiotic product of the fungus Cephalosporium ceruleans and a broad-spectrum fatty acid synthesis (FAS) inhibitor, has been shown to affect food intake and energy balance, and because the biomarker of stress Hsp-70 gene was found to interact directly with fatty acids, we hypothesized that cerulenin may regulate Hsp-70 gene expression. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine this issue. Cerulenin administration significantly (P < 0.05) decreased food intake and induced Hsp-70 mRNA levels in muscle, but not in liver or hypothalamus of 2-wk-old broiler chickens. These changes were accompanied by an unpregulation of muscle uncoupling protein and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 mRNA levels. This result indicated that the regulation of Hsp-70 gene expression in normal chickens, as estimated by oxidative stress indices [TBA reacting substances, ferric reducing/antioxidant power, and ceruloplasmin oxidase activity] levels, is tissue-specific. In attempt to discriminate between the effect of cerulenin and cerulenin-reduced food intake on Hsp-70 gene expression, we also evaluated the effect of food deprivation on the same cellular responses. Food deprivation for 16 h did not affect Hsp-70 gene expression in all tissues examined, indicating that the effect of cerulenin is independent of the inhibition of food intake. To ascertain whether the effect of cerulenin is direct or indirect, we carried out in vitro studies. Cerulenin treatment did not affect Hsp-70 gene expression in Leghorn male hepatoma and quail myoblast cell lines, suggesting that the observed effect in vivo may be mediated through the central nervous system.

Abstract
The avian uncoupling protein 3 (UCP3), mainly expressed in muscle tissue, could be involved in fatty acid (FA) metabolism, limitation of reactive oxygen species production, and/or nonshivering thermogenesis. We recently demonstrated that UCP3 mRNA expression was increased by isoproterenol (Iso), a β-agonist, in chicken Pectoralis major. This upregulation was associated with changes in FA metabolism and variations in the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and in the expression of the transcription factors peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)α, PPARβ/δ, and PPARγ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α). The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanisms involving AMPK and PPARα in UCP3 regulation in primary cultures of chick myoblasts. Avian UCP3 mRNA expression, associated with p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) activation, was increased by Iso and/or FAs. The PKA pathway mediated the effects of Iso on UCP3 expression. FA stimulation also led to AMPK activation. Furthermore, the direct involvement of AMPK on UCP3 regulation was shown by using 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxyamide ribonucleoside and Compound C. The use of the p38 MAPK inhibitor SB202190, which was associated with AMPK activation, also dramatically enhanced UCP3 mRNA expression. Finally the PPARα agonist WY-14643 strongly increased UCP3 mRNA expression. This study highlights the control of UCP3 expression by the β-adrenergic system and FA in chick myoblasts and demonstrates that its expression is directly regulated by AMPK and by PPARα. Overexpression of avian UCP3 might modulate energy utilization or limit oxidative stress when mitochondrial metabolism of FA is triggered by catecholamines.

Abstract
Avian uncoupling protein (avUCP) is orthologous to UCP3, which is suggested to be involved in fatty acid metabolism and to limit the mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species in mammals. In the chicken, the role and regulation of avUCP remain to be clarified. The aim of this study was to explore the control of avUCP expression by the beta-adrenergic system, known to be involved in avian thermoregulation and lipid utilization, and in UCP expression in mammals. Therefore, we measured the expression of avUCP mRNA and protein in the Pectoralis major muscle of chickens injected with the beta(2) agonist isoproterenol, and we investigated the potential pathways involved in the regulation of avUCP mRNA expression. Avian UCP mRNA expression was increased 7-fold 4h after isoproterenol injection, leading to a tendency to a 40% increase in avUCP protein 24h post-injection. This increase was preceded, 30 min after isoproterenol injection, by changes in the chicken thyroid status and in the muscular expression of PPARalpha, PPARbeta/delta, and PPARgamma coactivator-1alpha (PGC-1alpha). Moreover, the analysis of the avUCP promoter sequence suggested potential binding sites for PPARs and for thyroid hormone receptors. We also detected the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase, which has recently been reported to be involved in UCP3 regulation in mammals. This study presents for the first time evidence of beta-adrenergic control on avUCP messenger expression in chicken muscle and suggests the potential involvement of AMPK and several transcription factors in this regulation.

Abstract
This article reviews thyroid function and its hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis control in birds with emphasis on the similarities and differences in thyroid function compared to mammals and other vertebrate classes. Thyroid hormones are important in metabolism and the thermogenesis required for homeothermy in birds, as in mammals, the other homeothermic class of vertebrates. Thyroid hormones play important roles in development and growth in birds, as is the case for all vertebrate classes. The developmental effects of thyroid hormones in birds are presented in the context of differences in precocial and altricial patterns of development and growth with emphasis on oviparous development. The sections on thyroid hormone actions include discussion of effects on the development of a number of tissue types as well as on seasonal organismal processes and interactions of the thyroid axis with reproduction. The current picture of how environmental chemicals may disrupt avian thyroid function is relatively limited and is presented in the context of the assessment endpoints that have been used to date. These endpoints are categorized as thyroid and HPT axis endpoints versus target organ endpoints. The final section discusses two recommended assay protocols, the avian two-generation toxicity assay and the avian one-generation assay, and whether these protocols can evaluate thyroid disruption in birds.

Abstract
Emerging evidence showed that variations in environmental temperature affect both leptin and uncoupling protein (UCP) gene expression in mammals, whereas a little is known about such interactions in birds. Thus, we conducted the present study to investigate the influence of acute (2 hours) cold (4 degrees C) and chronic (10 days) heat (32 degrees C) exposure on hepatic leptin and muscle UCP gene expression in 5-wk-old broiler chickens. Both cold- and heat-exposure significantly (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001) upregulated hepatic leptin (by 35 and 46%, respectively) and muscle UCP mRNA levels (by 71 and 71%, respectively) compared to the thermoneutrality (22 degrees C). This result suggests that leptin and UCP may be involved in the thermoregulation response of chickens to extreme climate (cold and hot temperatures). The upregulation of hepatic leptin gene expression was accompanied by an increase in plasma leptin levels, indicating that leptin may be regulated at transcriptional level. The increase of leptin and UCP mRNA abundance, and leptinemia we report here were not related to plasma glucose or insulin levels. In conclusion, the exposure of broiler chickens to extreme ambient temperatures (cold and heat) increases hepatic leptin and muscle UCP gene expression.

Abstract
Genetic selection has significantly improved the muscle development of fast-growing broiler chickens in the last 50 yr. However, improvement in muscle growth has coincided with relatively poor development of visceral systems, resulting in impaired ability to cope with high environmental temperatures. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of thermal manipulation (TM) during different periods of embryogenesis on chick hatchability, BW and thermoregulation upon hatching, on their ability to cope with thermal challenge at 42 d of age, and on carcass and breast meat traits. Control embryos were incubated at 37.8 degrees C. The TM embryos were incubated at 37.8 degrees C and treated for 3 h at 39.5 degrees C on the following days of embryogenesis: E8 to E10 [early (EA)], E16 to E18 [late (LA)], and both E8 to E10 and E16 to E18 (EA-LA). Body weight and body temperature (T(b)) were measured at hatching and throughout the growth period as well as during exposure of 42-d-old chickens to a thermal challenge at 35 degrees C for 6 h. The LA and EA chicks exhibited significantly lower T(b) than control chicks (37.9 vs. 38.2 degrees C) at hatching, but during the growth period, differences in T(b) between treated and control chicks decreased with age. Significant hyperthermia (over 44 degrees C) was monitored in all groups during the thermal challenge, but mortality was higher in treated than in control chickens. No effect of treatments on BW was found during the entire growth period. However, breast yield was higher in LA chickens than in controls at slaughter. The EA and EA-LA treatments slightly decreased the ultimate pH of breast meat, whereas the LA treatment had no effect. In conclusion, none of the TM conditions tested in the present study were able to improve long-term thermotolerance in chickens. Late treatment favored breast muscle growth without affecting ultimate pH and drip loss of breast meat.

In altricial birds, thyroid function shows little maturation until after hatch as also is the case for thermoregulatory, sensory, and motor functions. This review describes the patterns of precocial and altricial thyroid development, their hypothalamic-pituitary control, extrathyroidal control of hormone activation and deactivation, and target tissue effects during development. Our knowledge is greatest for precocial galliform birds although the organismal picture of thyroid development has been investigated in several altricial avian species.

Abstract
Few environmental factors have a larger influence on animal energetics than temperature, a fact that makes thermoregulation a very important process for survival. In general, endothermic species, i.e., mammals and birds, maintain a constant body temperature (Tb) in fluctuating environmental temperatures using autonomic and behavioural mechanisms. Most of the knowledge on thermoregulatory physiology has emerged from studies using mammalian species, particularly rats. However, studies with all vertebrate groups are essential for a more complete understanding of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of Tb. Ectothermic vertebrates-fish, amphibians and reptiles-thermoregulate essentially by behavioural mechanisms. With few exceptions, both endotherms and ectotherms develop fever (a regulated increase in Tb) in response to exogenous pyrogens, and regulated hypothermia (anapyrexia) in response to hypoxia. This review focuses on the mechanisms, particularly neuromediators and regions in the central nervous system, involved in thermoregulation in vertebrates, in conditions of euthermia, fever and anapyrexia.

Abstract
Thyroid hormones (THs) have long been known to be involved in the control of thermoregulation in birds and mammals. In particular, they are reported to play a role in the regulation of heat production. The underlying mechanisms could be the stimulation of the nuclear and mitochondrial transcription of several genes involved in energy metabolism and/or a direct action on the activity of components of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Attention has recently been focussed on a subfamily of mitochondrial anion carriers called uncoupling proteins (UCPs). These proteins are suspected to be involved in a partial dissipation of the mitochondrial proton electrochemical gradient that would uncouple phosphorylations from oxidations and hence produce heat. However, the involvement of uncoupling mechanisms in thermogenesis and particularly in the thermogenic effect of TH is still unclear. The thermogenic role of UCP1, specifically expressed in brown adipose tissue, and its regulation by TH in rodents is quite well recognised, but the involvement in heat production of its mammalian homologues UCP2, ubiquitously expressed, and UCP3, muscle and adipose tissue-specific, as well as the role of the muscular avian UCP (avUCP), are to be further investigated. The expression of the UCP2 and UCP3 genes was shown to be enhanced by TH in muscle of several rodent species, and to be increased in situations where thermogenesis is stimulated, whereas results are more contrasted in pig. There is now increasing evidence that the physiological role of the mammalian UCP3 and UCP2 is rather related to lipid oxidation and/or prevention of reactive oxygen species accumulation than to heat production by uncoupling. The expression of avUCP was also recently demonstrated to be strongly regulated by thyroid status in chicken, and overexpressed in experimental conditions favouring high triiodothyronine concentrations and thermogenesis. However, its real uncoupling activity and contribution to thermogenesis remain to be established.

Abstract
Whole-body energy homeostasis and food intake control are essential for an economically sound selection for growth in poultry. The cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate and link food intake, energy expenditure and energy balance are still poorly understood in poultry. Mitochondrial uncoupling protein-1 (UCP-1) is known to uncouple respiration from ATP synthesis by short circuiting the inward proton flow, resulting in heat production. Its role seems quite well established in adaptive thermogenesis and energy metabolism. However, uncertainty still surrounds the physiological function of the recently discovered UCP-1 homologues, UCP-2 and -3. Most of the functional characterization of these UCPs, to date, has been conducted in mammals. Recently, an avian UCP homologue, which was identified in chicken, hummingbird and king penguin, appears to play a key role in adaptative thermogenesis. Here, we review recent reports describing avian UCP (av-UCP) and discuss progress concerning the molecular mechanisms and potential role of the av-UCP in thermogenesis regulation in avian species.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the hormonal regulation of the avian homolog of mammalian uncoupling protein (avUCP) by studying the impact of thyroid hormones and insulin on avUCP mRNA expression in chickens (Gallus gallus). For 3 wk, chicks received either a standard diet (control group), or a standard diet supplemented with triiodothyronine (T(3); T3 group) or with the thyroid gland inhibitor methimazole (MMI group). A fourth group received injections of the deiodinase inhibitor iopanoic acid (IOP group). During the 4th wk of age, all animals received two daily injections of either human insulin or saline solution. The results indicate a twofold overexpression of avUCP mRNA in gastrocnemius muscle of T3 birds and a clear downregulation (-74%) in MMI chickens compared with control chickens. Insulin injections had no significant effect on avUCP mRNA expression in chickens. This study describes for the first time induction of avUCP mRNA expression by the thermogenic hormone T(3) in chickens and supports a possible involvement of avUCP in avian thermogenesis.
