Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal and childhood periods are sensitive windows of development wherein adversity exposure can result in disadvantageous outcomes. Data-driven dimensional approaches that appreciate the co-occurrence of adversities allow for extending beyond specificity (individual adversities) and cumulative risk (non-specific summation of adversities) approaches to understand how the type and timing of adversities affect outcomes. OBJECTIVE With evolving recommendations on what should be important in adversity research, we sought to establish a data-driven framework that accounts for both type and timing of adversity by (1) replicating dimensions of childhood adversities, (2) determining whether perinatal adversities form unique dimensions and (3) identifying whether adversities during the perinatal and childhood periods overlap or remain distinct. METHODS Using 6815 9-10-year-olds from the baseline Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, mixed graphical models were fit independently to childhood adversities and perinatal adversities, and simultaneously to perinatal and childhood adversities, to model relationships among adversities. RESULTS Data-driven clustering approaches estimated dimensions of adversity within networks. Six dimensions of childhood adversities and five dimensions of perinatal adversities were observed. When considered simultaneously, dimensions of perinatal and childhood adversities both merged (e.g., parental circumstances during perinatal and socioeconomic status during childhood) and stayed independent (e.g., obstetric complications during perinatal and neglect during childhood) underscoring the importance of considering both type and timing when studying early life adversity. CONCLUSIONS These results highlight that it may be appropriate to study certain adversity dimensions independently, whereas for others considering the impact of timing and potential continuity in exposure is critical. Recommendations for adversity research are discussed.

Abstract
Earlier research suggested that psychotic experiences (PEs), the extended-psychosis phenotype, are associated with cognitive impairment. Recent studies, however, revealed more mixed findings, and patterns and magnitude of cognitive deficits in PEs remain uncertain. We aimed to systematically review and quantitatively synthesize estimates of cognitive functioning covering a wide array of domains in individuals with versus without PEs. We systematically searched four databases from inception to 6 July 2023. We generated pooled effect size (Hedges'g) using random-effects models. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression examining the moderating effect of sex, age at PE assessment, study design, cognitive task, and PE assessment instrument on cognitive functioning were performed when applicable. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023442528). Twenty-seven and six studies were included for meta-analysis of cognitive functioning comparing individuals with versus without PEs (n = 82,561; 10,251 individuals with PEs) and individuals with high-level versus low-level PEs (n = 8062; 813 individuals with high-level PEs), respectively. Individuals with PEs exhibited worse cognitive performance in general cognition (Hedges'g = -0.10 [95%CI = -0.18 to -0.02]), verbal fluency (Hedges'g = -0.05 [95%CI = -0.10 to -0.00]), visual memory (Hedges'g = -0.21 [95%CI = -0.38 to -0.03]), and working memory (Hedges'g = -0.16 [95%CI = -0.28 to -0.04]). Meta-regression revealed that general cognition associated with PEs was related to younger age (z = 3.37, p = 0.001), male sex (z = -2.59, p = 0.010), and cognitive assessment before PE assessment (z = -2.15, p = 0.031), whereas working memory in individuals with PEs was associated with concurrent cognitive and PE assessment (z = 6.19, p < 0.001). We failed to find moderating effect of the choice of PE assessment instrument or cognitive task on cognitive functioning in PEs. Additional analysis showed no significant difference in the performance of any cognitive domains between individuals with high-level versus low-level PEs. Limitations included studies primarily derived from Western countries, no social-cognitive domains, and varied PE measurement. In sum, PEs are associated with milder and more circumscribed cognitive impairment relative to psychotic disorders. Future research is required to clarify differential cognitive trajectories between individuals with transient PEs and persistent/recurrent-PEs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both childhood adversity (CA) and first-episode psychosis (FEP) have been linked to alterations in cortical thickness (CT). The interactive effects between different types of CAs and FEP on CT remain understudied. METHODS One-hundred sixteen individuals with FEP (mean age = 23.8 ± 6.9 years, 34% females, 80.2% non-affective FEP) and 98 healthy controls (HCs) (mean age = 24.4 ± 6.2 years, 43% females) reported the presence/absence of CA <17 years using an adapted version of the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse (CECA.Q) and the Retrospective Bullying Questionnaire (RBQ) and underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Correlation analyses were used to assess associations between brain maps of CA and FEP effects. General linear models (GLMs) were performed to assess the interaction effects of CA and FEP on CT. RESULTS Eighty-three individuals with FEP and 83 HCs reported exposure to at least one CA. CT alterations in FEP were similar to those found in participants exposed to separation from parents, bullying, parental discord, household poverty, and sexual abuse (r = 0.50 to 0.25). Exposure to neglect (β = -0.24, 95% CI [-0.37 to -0.12], p = 0.016) and overall maltreatment (β = -0.13, 95% CI [-0.20 to -0.06], p = 0.043) were associated with cortical thinning in the right medial orbitofrontal region. CONCLUSIONS Cortical alterations in individuals with FEP are similar to those observed in the context of socio-environmental adversity. Neglect and maltreatment may contribute to CT reductions in FEP. Our findings provide new insights into the specific neurobiological effects of CA in early psychosis.

Abstract
Introduction A growing literature has shown that exposure to adverse life events during childhood or adolescence is associated with the presence of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), which is in turn associated with the risk of psychotic outcomes. Ruminative thinking, i.e., the tendency to dwell on particular issues or ideas, may affect the perceived aversiveness and ability to cope with adverse life events. However, the role that rumination plays in the relationship between adverse life events and the presence of PLEs remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between adverse life events and PLEs in a longitudinal sample of young adults and adolescents, and to investigate whether this relationship is mediated by ruminative thinking. Methods We used a longitudinal naturalistic sample of 706 volunteers assessed at ages 18 and 22 years, within the Imagen consortium. Lifetime occurrence of adverse life events (i.e., events perceived as strongly negative by participants) was investigated using the Life Events Questionnaire. The Community Assessment of Psychic Experience (CAPE-42) served to assess the presence of PLEs, while ruminative thinking was investigated through the Ruminative Response Scale. Results Results showed that both frequency of PLEs and their persistence over time were associated with greater adverse life events exposure (r = 0.32, p < 0.001 and F 1 = 9.8; p < 0.001, respectively) and greater ruminative response (r = 0.66, p < 0.001 and F 1 = 94.9; p < 0.001, respectively). Mediation analyses showed that relationship between adverse life events and PLEs frequency was partially mediated by rumination (direct effect Z: 5.4, p < 0.001; indirect effect Z: 6.9, p < 0.001; total effect Z: 5.9, p < 0.001). Considering changes between the two assessment timepoints, relationship between PLEs variation between 18 and 22 years and adverse life events occurred during the same period was partially mediated by changes in rumination (direct effect Z: 2.8, p < 0.005; indirect effect Z: 4.3, p < 0.001; total effect Z: 4.3; p < 0.001). Discussion Overall, our findings confirm that the presence of adverse life events may increase the risk of experiencing PLEs in healthy individuals and suggest that dysfunctional coping strategies, such as ruminative thinking, may be related to psychosis proneness. Results do not disentangle whether individuals with greater risk for psychosis tend to ruminate more or whether rumination exacerbates psychosis risk.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Urbanization, a complex global phenomenon, has a significant bearing on schizophrenia/psychosis burden through various socioeconomic and environmental factors. This review focuses on recent evidence (2019-2023) linking urbanization, schizophrenia, and the role of green space. RECENT FINDINGS This review analyzed 43 articles that examined the correlation between urban birth or upbringing, urban living (urbanicity), and various schizophrenia/psychosis-related outcomes such as incidence, psychotic experiences, etc. The studies showed differing results across geographical locations. Socioeconomic factors like area deprivation, migrant status (ethnic density) and social fragmentation were independently associated with the risk of schizophrenia/psychosis irrespective of urbanicity. More recently, environmental factors such as green space reduction and air pollution have been explored in urban living conditions and were positively associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia/psychosis. SUMMARY There is a need for further investigation in low and middle-income countries. The impact of urbanization-related factors and green space on the risk of schizophrenia/psychosis calls for appropriate governmental commitments toward structured and healthy urban planning.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review aims to provide an update on the association between urbanization and psychotic spectrum disorders, focusing on specific aspects of the urban environment that could be a bane or boon for the risk of psychosis. RECENT FINDINGS Majority of the included studies support previous evidence suggesting that urbanization is linked to a higher risk of psychotic experiences and psychotic spectrum disorders. A small minority, however, have also found specific factors in the urban environment that could give rise to positive outcomes, such as better social functioning and lower mortality rates in psychotic spectrum disorders, or mitigate the risks associated with urbanization. The perception of the urban environment was also an important factor that increased or mitigated stress levels in patients with psychosis, which in turn affected their susceptibility to psychotic symptoms. SUMMARY Specific aspects of the urban environment such as the availability and density of greenspaces are crucial for mitigating the effect of urbanization on risk of psychotic spectrum disorders, and should be incorporated into urban planning. At the same time, there is a need to further explore how modifiable risk factors of the urban environment such as air and noise pollution can be minimized to allow for more liveable cities in the context of psychotic spectrum conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most of the young individuals with problem gambling (PG) or psychotic experiences (PEs) are less prone to seek medical help. Therefore, community-based studies investigating the relationship between these entities in non-clinical young people across a continuum of severity are warranted. To this end, the present study proposes to advance knowledge on the mechanisms that potentially underlie the association between PG and PEs, by examining the role of a potential moderator, i.e. alexithymia, in this relationship. METHODS A total of 399 participants enrolled in this study (mean age = 21.58 ± 3.20 years) participated in an online cross-sectional survey. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the Prodromal Questionnaire-Brief (PQ-B), and the Toronto alexithymia scale (TAS-20) were used. RESULTS Thirty-three (8.3%) participants had problem-gambling, whereas 13 (3.3%) were probable pathological gamblers. Moderation analysis results adjusted over confounders (age, household crowding index, marital status, personal history of mental disorder, other illegal drug use) showed that the interaction PG by alexithymia (p = .018) was significantly associated with PEs scores. At moderate (Beta = 1.93) and high (Beta = 3.38) levels of alexithymia, more PG was significantly associated with more PEs scores. CONCLUSION Findings suggest that GP may have a different impact on PEs depending on the individual's level of alexithymia. As such, both alexithymia and gambling behavior should be considered in the clinical assessment of young people who present with PEs, which can help in implementing more tailored and individualized treatment plans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In 2050 two-thirds of the world's population is predicted to live in cities, which asks for a better understanding of how the urban environment affects mental health. Urbanicity has repeatedly been found to be a risk factor, in particular for psychosis. Here, we explored what factors of the urban exposome underlie the association between urban characteristics and psychotic experiences (PE) in adolescents. METHODS Participants were 815 adolescents (mean age 14.84 years, SD 0.78) from an at-risk cohort (greater Rotterdam area, the Netherlands) oversampled on their self-reported emotional and behavioral problems. We used linear regression analysis to examine the association with detailed geodata on urbanicity (surrounding address density), green space density (high and low vegetation), and mixed noise levels (road, rail, air, industry, and wind power) with PE in adolescents. Analyses were adjusted for multiple socio-economic and parental confounders. Furthermore, we explored sex-interaction effects. RESULTS Higher surrounding address density and low greenspace density were each independently associated with more PE (B = 0.18, 95 % CI 0.02; 0.34 and B = 0.17, 95 % CI 0.01; 0.32, respectively). High mixed noise levels were only associated with more PE in boys (B = 0.23, 95 % CI 0.01; 0.46). A sex-interaction effect was found for high urbanicity (B = -0.46, 95 % CI -0.77; -0.14) and low greenspace density (B = -0.49, 95 % CI -0.73; -0.11), illustrating that these associations with PE were specific for boys. CONCLUSION Multiple characteristics of living in an urban area are associated with more PE in adolescent boys. Our observations provide leads for prevention of mental health problems via urban designing.
