Cyanobacteria's power trio: auxin, siderophores, and nitrogen fixation to foster thriving agriculture

Cyanobacteria, often overlooked in traditional agriculture, are gaining recognition for their roles in enhancing plant growth and soil health through diverse mechanisms. This review examines their multifaceted contributions to agricultural systems, highlighting their proficiency in auxin production, which promotes plant growth and development. Additionally, we examined cyanobacteria's ability to produce siderophores that enhance iron absorption and address micronutrient deficiencies, as well as their capacity for nitrogen fixation, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can utilize, all with the goal of reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. A meta-analysis of existing studies indicates significant positive effects of cyanobacteria on crop yield, although variability exists. While some research shows considerable yield increases, other studies report non-significant changes, suggesting benefits may depend on specific conditions and crop types. The overall random-effects model estimate indicates a significant aggregate effect, with a few exceptions, emphasizing the need for further research to optimize the use of cyanobacteria as biofertilizers. Although cyanobacteria-based products are limited in comparison to seaweed-derived alternatives, for instance, ongoing challenges include regulatory issues and production costs. Integrating cultivation with wastewater treatment could enhance competitiveness and viability in the agricultural market.

Nanoscale elemental and morphological imaging of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria

Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria bind atmospheric nitrogen and carbon dioxide using sunlight. This experimental study focused on a laboratory-based model system, Anabaena sp., in nitrogen-depleted culture. When combined nitrogen is scarce, the filamentous prokaryotes reconcile photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation by cellular differentiation into heterocysts. To better understand the influence of micronutrients on cellular function, 2D and 3D synchrotron X-ray fluorescence mappings were acquired from whole biological cells in their frozen-hydrated state at the Bionanoprobe, Advanced Photon Source. To study elemental homeostasis within these chain-like organisms, biologically relevant elements were mapped using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Higher levels of cytosolic K+, Ca2+, and Fe2+ were measured in the heterocyst than in adjacent vegetative cells, supporting the notion of elevated micronutrient demand. P-rich clusters, identified as polyphosphate bodies involved in nutrient storage, metal detoxification, and osmotic regulation, were consistently co-localized with K+ and occasionally sequestered Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe2+, and Mn2+ ions. Machine-learning-based k-mean clustering revealed that P/K clusters were associated with either Fe or Ca, with Fe and Ca clusters also occurring individually. In accordance with XRF nanotomography, distinct P/K-containing clusters close to the cellular envelope were surrounded by larger Ca-rich clusters. The transition metal Fe, which is a part of nitrogenase enzyme, was detected as irregularly shaped clusters. The elemental composition and cellular morphology of diazotrophic Anabaena sp. was visualized by multimodal imaging using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscopy. This paper discusses the first experimental results obtained with a combined in-line optical and X-ray fluorescence microscope at the Bionanoprobe.

Assessing the Efficacy of Cyanobacterial Strains as Oryza sativa Growth Biostimulants in Saline Environments

Soil salinity, which affects plant photosynthesis mechanisms, significantly limits plant productivity. Soil microorganisms, including cyanobacteria, can synthesize various exometabolites that contribute to plant growth and development in several ways. These microorganisms can increase plant tolerance to salt stress by secreting various phytoprotectants; therefore, it is highly relevant to study soil microorganisms adapted to high salinity and investigate their potential to increase plant resistance to salt stress. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of four cyanobacterial strains: Spirulina platensis Calu-532, Nostoc sp. J-14, Trichormus variabilis K-31, and Oscillatoria brevis SH-12. Among these, Nostoc sp. J-14 presented the highest antioxidant activity. Their growth-stimulating effects under saline conditions were also assessed under laboratory conditions. These results indicate that Nostoc sp. J-14 and T. variabilis K-31 show significant promise in mitigating the harmful effects of salinity on plant size and weight. Both strains notably enhanced the growth of Oryza sativa plants under saline conditions, suggesting their potential as biostimulants to improve crop productivity in saline environments. This research underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms by which cyanobacteria increase plant tolerance to salt stress, paving the way for sustainable agricultural practices in saline areas.

The role of FraI in cell-cell communication and differentiation in the hormogonia-forming cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme

Multicellular cyanobacteria, like Nostoc punctiforme, rely on septal junctions for cell-cell communication, which is crucial for coordinating various physiological processes including differentiation of N2-fixing heterocysts, spore-like akinetes, and hormogonia-short, motile filaments important for dispersal. In this study, we functionally characterize a protein, encoded by gene Npun_F4142, which in a random mutagenesis approach, initially showed a motility-related function. The reconstructed Npun_F4142 knockout mutant exhibits further distinct phenotypic traits, including altered hormogonia formation with significant reduced motility, inability to differentiate heterocysts and filament fragmentation. For that reason, we named the protein FraI (fragmentation phenotype). The mutant displays severely impaired cell-cell communication, due to almost complete absence of the nanopore array in the septal cell wall, which is an essential part of the septal junctions. Despite lack of communication, hormogonia in the ΔfraI mutant maintain motility and phototactic behavior, even though less pronounced than the wild type (WT). This suggests an alternative mechanism for coordinated movement beyond septal junctions. Our study underscores the significance of FraI in nanopore formation and cell differentiation, and provides additional evidence for the importance of septal junction formation and communication in various differentiation traits of cyanobacteria. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the regulatory networks governing multicellular cyanobacterial behavior, with implications for broader insights into microbial multicellularity.

IMPORTANCE

The filament-forming cyanobacterium Nostoc punctiforme serves as a valuable model for studying cell differentiation, including the formation of nitrogen-fixing heterocysts and hormogonia. Hormogonia filaments play a crucial role in dispersal and plant colonization, providing a nitrogen source through atmospheric nitrogen fixation, thus holding promise for fertilizer-free agriculture. The coordination among the hormogonia cells enabling uniform movement toward the positive signal remains poorly understood. This study investigates the role of septal junction-mediated communication in hormogonia differentiation and motility, by studying a ΔfraI mutant with significantly impaired communication. Surprisingly, impaired communication does not abolish synchronized filament movement, suggesting an alternative coordination mechanism. These findings deepen our understanding of cyanobacterial biology and have broader implications for multicellular behavior in prokaryotes.

Diversity and specificity of molecular functions in cyanobacterial symbionts

Cyanobacteria are globally occurring photosynthetic bacteria notable for their contribution to primary production and production of toxins which have detrimental ecosystem impacts. Furthermore, cyanobacteria can form mutualistic symbiotic relationships with a diverse set of eukaryotes, including land plants, aquatic plankton and fungi. Nevertheless, not all cyanobacteria are found in symbiotic associations suggesting symbiotic cyanobacteria have evolved specializations that facilitate host-interactions. Photosynthetic capabilities, nitrogen fixation, and the production of complex biochemicals are key functions provided by host-associated cyanobacterial symbionts. To explore if additional specializations are associated with such lifestyles in cyanobacteria, we have conducted comparative phylogenomics of molecular functions and of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in 984 cyanobacterial genomes. Cyanobacteria with host-associated and symbiotic lifestyles were concentrated in the family Nostocaceae, where eight monophyletic clades correspond to specific host taxa. In agreement with previous studies, symbionts are likely to provide fixed nitrogen to their eukaryotic partners, through multiple different nitrogen fixation pathways. Additionally, our analyses identified chitin metabolising pathways in cyanobacteria associated with specific host groups, while obligate symbionts had fewer BGCs. The conservation of molecular functions and BGCs between closely related symbiotic and free-living cyanobacteria suggests the potential for additional cyanobacteria to form symbiotic relationships than is currently known.

Emerging nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria for sustainable cotton cultivation

Amid growing environmental concerns and the imperative for sustainable agricultural practices, this study examines the potential of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria as biofertilizers, particularly in cotton cultivation. The reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers (SNFs), prevalent in modern agriculture, poses significant environmental challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions and water system contamination. This research aims to shift this paradigm by exploring the capacity of cyanobacteria as a natural and sustainable alternative. Utilizing advanced metabarcoding methods to analyze the 16S rRNA gene, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of soil bacterial communities within cotton fields. This study focused on evaluating the diversity, structure, taxonomic composition, and potential functional characteristics of these communities. Emphasis was placed on the isolation of native N2-fixing cyanobacteria strains rom cotton soils, and their subsequent effects on cotton growth. Results from our study demonstrate significant plant growth-promoting (PGP) activities, measured as N2 fixation, production of Phytohormones, Fe solubilization and biofertilization potential of five isolated cyanobacterial strains, underscoring their efficacy in cotton. These findings suggest a viable pathway for replacing chemical-synthetic nitrogen fertilizers with natural, organic alternatives. The reintegration of these beneficial species into agricultural ecosystems can enhance crop growth while fostering a balanced microbial environment, thus contributing to the broader goals of global sustainable agriculture.

Characterization of the olive endophytic community in genotypes displaying a contrasting response to Xylella fastidiosa

BACKGROUND

Endophytes mediate the interactions between plants and other microorganisms, and the functional aspects of interactions between endophytes and their host that support plant-growth promotion and tolerance to stresses signify the ecological relevance of the endosphere microbiome. In this work, we studied the bacterial and fungal endophytic communities of olive tree (Olea europaea L.) asymptomatic or low symptomatic genotypes sampled in groves heavily compromised by Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca, aiming to characterize microbiota in genotypes displaying differential response to the pathogen.

RESULTS

The relationships between bacterial and fungal genera were analyzed both separately and together, in order to investigate the intricate correlations between the identified Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs). Results suggested a dominant role of the fungal endophytic community compared to the bacterial one, and highlighted specific microbial taxa only associated with asymptomatic or low symptomatic genotypes. In addition, they indicated the occurrence of well-adapted genetic resources surviving after years of pathogen pressure in association with microorganisms such as Burkholderia, Quambalaria, Phaffia and Rhodotorula.

CONCLUSIONS

This is the first study to overview endophytic communities associated with several putatively resistant olive genotypes in areas under high X. fastidiosa inoculum pressure. Identifying these negatively correlated genera can offer valuable insights into the potential antagonistic microbial resources and their possible development as biocontrol agents.

Seed bacterial microbiota in post-submergence tolerant and sensitive barley genotypes

Flooding is a predominant abiotic stress for cultivated plants, including barley. This cereal crop shows a large adaptability to different environmental conditions, suggesting the presence of key traits to tolerate adverse conditions. During germination, genetic variations account for dissimilarities in flooding tolerance. However, differences in the seed microbiota may also contribute to tolerance/sensitivity during seedling establishment. This work investigated differences in microbiome among the grains of barley accessions. Two barley phenotypes were compared, each either tolerant or sensitive to a short submergence period followed by a recovery. The study used a metataxonomic analysis based on 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and subsequent functional prediction. Our results support the hypothesis that bacterial microbiota inhabiting the barley seeds are different between sensitive and tolerant barley accessions, which harbour specific bacterial phyla and families. Finally, bacteria detected in tolerant barley accessions show a peculiar functional enrichment that suggests a possible connection with successful germination and seedling establishment.

Bio Prospecting of Endophytes and PGPRs in Artemisinin Production for the Socio-economic Advancement

The growing demand for Artemisia annua plants in healthcare, food, and pharmaceutical industries has led to increased cultivation efforts to extract a vital compound, Artemisinin. The efficacy of Artemisinin as a potent drug against malaria disease is well established but its limited natural abundance. However, the common practice of using chemical fertilizers for maximum yield has adverse effects on plant growth, development, and the quality of phytochemicals. To address these issues, the review discusses the alternative approach of harnessing beneficial rhizosphere microbiota, particularly plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Microbes hold substantial biotechnological potential for augmenting medicinal plant production, offering an environmentally friendly and cost-effective means to enhance medicinal plant production. This review article aims to identify a suitable endophytic population capable of enabling Artemisia sp. to thrive amidst abiotic stress while simultaneously enhancing Artemisinin production, thereby broadening its availability to a larger population. Furthermore, by subjecting endophytes to diverse combinations of harsh conditions, this review sheds light on the modulation of essential artemisinin biosynthesis pathway genes, both up regulated and down regulated. The collective findings suggest that through the in vitro engineering of endophytic communities and their in vivo application to Artemisia plants cultivated in tribal population fields, artemisinin production can be significantly augmented. The overall aim of this review to explore the potential of harnessing microbial communities, their functions, and services to enhance the cultivation of medicinal plants. It outlines a promising path toward bolstering artemisinin production, which holds immense promise in the fight against malaria.

Symbiosis between cyanobacteria and plants: from molecular studies to agronomic applications

Nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria from the order Nostocales are able to establish symbiotic relationships with diverse plant species. They are promiscuous symbionts, as the same strain of cyanobacterium is able to form symbiotic biological nitrogen-fixing relationships with different plants species. This review will focus on the different types of cyanobacterial-plant associations, both endophytic and epiphytic, and provide insights from a structural viewpoint, as well as our current understanding of the mechanisms involved in the symbiotic crosstalk. In all these symbioses, the benefit for the plant is clear; it obtains from the cyanobacterium fixed nitrogen and other bioactive compounds, such as phytohormones, polysaccharides, siderophores, or vitamins, leading to enhanced plant growth and productivity. Additionally, there is increasing use of different cyanobacterial species as bio-inoculants for biological nitrogen fixation to improve soil fertility and crop production, thus providing an eco-friendly, alternative, and sustainable approach to reduce the over-reliance on synthetic chemical fertilizers.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Improve Rice Response to Climate Change Conditions

Rice is one of the most important crops in the world and is considered a strategic crop for food security. Furthermore, the excessive use of chemical fertilizers to obtain high yields causes environmental problems. A sustainable alternative includes taking advantage of beneficial bacteria that promote plant growth. Here, we investigate the effect of five bacterial biofertilizers from halophytes on growth, and we investigate photosynthetic efficiency in rice plants grown under saline conditions (0 and 85 mmol L^-1 NaCl) and future climate change scenarios, including increased CO₂ concentrations and temperature (400/700 ppm and 25/+4 °C, respectively). Biofertilizers 1-4 increased growth by 9-64% in plants grown with and without salt in both CO₂- temperature combinations, although there was no significant positive effect on the net photosynthetic rate of rice plants. In general, biofertilizer 1 was the most effective at 400 ppm CO₂ and at 700 ppm CO₂ +4 °C in the absence of salt. Inocula 1-5 also stimulated plant length at high CO₂ levels without salt. Finally, the positive effect of biofertilization was attenuated in the plants grown under the interaction between salt and high CO₂. This highlights the significance of studying biofertilization under stress interaction to establish the real potential of biofertilizers in the context of climate change conditions.

A Microbiological Approach to Alleviate Soil Replant Syndrome in Peaches

Replant syndrome (RS) is a global problem characterized by reduced growth, production life, and yields of tree fruit/nut orchards. RS etiology is unclear, but repeated monoculture plantings are thought to develop a pathogenic soil microbiome. This study aimed to evaluate a biological approach that could reduce RS in peach (Prunus persica) orchards by developing a healthy soil bacteriome. Soil disinfection via autoclave followed by cover cropping and cover crop incorporation was found to distinctly alter the peach soil bacteriome but did not affect the RS etiology of RS-susceptible 'Lovell' peach seedlings. In contrast, non-autoclaved soil followed by cover cropping and incorporation altered the soil bacteriome to a lesser degree than autoclaving but induced significant peach growth. Non-autoclaved and autoclaved soil bacteriomes were compared to highlight bacterial taxa promoted by soil disinfection prior to growing peaches. Differential abundance shows a loss of potentially beneficial bacteria due to soil disinfection. The treatment with the highest peach biomass was non-autoclaved soil with a cover crop history of alfalfa, corn, and tomato. Beneficial bacterial species that were cultivated exclusively in the peach rhizosphere of non-autoclaved soils with a cover crop history were Paenibacillus castaneae and Bellilinea caldifistulae. In summary, the non-autoclaved soils show continuous enhancement of beneficial bacteria at each cropping phase, culminating in an enriched rhizosphere which may help alleviate RS in peaches.

What can hornworts teach us?

The hornworts are a small group of land plants, consisting of only 11 families and approximately 220 species. Despite their small size as a group, their phylogenetic position and unique biology are of great importance. Hornworts, together with mosses and liverworts, form the monophyletic group of bryophytes that is sister to all other land plants (Tracheophytes). It is only recently that hornworts became amenable to experimental investigation with the establishment of Anthoceros agrestis as a model system. In this perspective, we summarize the recent advances in the development of A. agrestis as an experimental system and compare it with other plant model systems. We also discuss how A. agrestis can help to further research in comparative developmental studies across land plants and to solve key questions of plant biology associated with the colonization of the terrestrial environment. Finally, we explore the significance of A. agrestis in crop improvement and synthetic biology applications in general.

Salinity alleviator bacteria in rice (Oryza sativa L.), their colonization efficacy, and synergism with melatonin

In this study, rhizospheric and endophytic bacteria were tested for the alleviation of salinity stress in rice. Endophytic isolates were taken from previous studies based on their salt stress-alleviating traits. The rhizospheric bacteria were isolated from rice and screened based on salt tolerance and plant growth-promoting traits. Molecular identification indicated the presence of class Gammaproteobacteria, Bacillota, and Actinomycetia. Two-two most potential isolates each from rhizospheric and endophytic bacteria were selected for in planta trials. Results showed that microbial inoculation significantly improved germination and seedling vigor under elevated salinity. The confocal scanning laser microscopy showed higher bacterial colonization in inoculated rice roots than in control. Based on this experiment, rhizospheric bacteria Brevibacterium frigoritolerans W19 and endophytic Bacillus safensis BTL5 were selected for pot trial along with a growth-inducing compound melatonin 20 ppm. Inoculation of these two bacteria improved the levels of chlorophyll, proline, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, polyphenol oxidase, root-shoot length, and dry weight under elevated salt concentration. The gene expression studies showed modulation of SOD1, CATa, NHX1, and PAL1 genes by the bacterial strains and melatonin application. The inoculation was found to have additive effects with 20 ppm melatonin. This enhancement in dry matter accumulation, compatible solute production, and oxidative stress regulation could help plants in mitigating the ill effects of high salinity. Exploring such a combination of microbes and inducer molecules could be potentially useful in developing stress-alleviating bioformulations.

Quantitative Proteomics at Early Stages of the Symbiotic Interaction Between Oryza sativa and Nostoc punctiforme Reveals Novel Proteins Involved in the Symbiotic Crosstalk

Symbiosis between cyanobacteria and plants is considered pivotal for biological nitrogen deposition in terrestrial ecosystems. Despite extensive knowledge of the ecology of plant-cyanobacterium symbioses, little is known about the molecular mechanisms involved in recognition between partners. Here, we conducted a quantitative sequential window acquisition of all theoretical fragment ion spectra mass spectrometry pipeline to analyze protein changes in Oryza sativa and Nostoc punctiforme during early events of symbiosis. We found differentially expressed proteins in both organisms linked to several biological functions, including signal transduction, adhesion, defense-related proteins and cell wall modification. In N. punctiforme we found increased expression of 62 proteins that have been previously described in other Nostoc-plant symbioses, reinforcing the robustness of our study. Our findings reveal new proteins activated in the early stages of the Nostoc-Oryza symbiosis that might be important for the recognition between the plant and the host. Oryza mutants in genes in the common symbiosis signaling pathway (CSSP) show reduced colonization efficiency, providing first insights on the involvement of the CSSP for the accommodation of N. punctiforme inside the plant cells. This information may have long-term implications for a greater understanding of the symbiotic interaction between Nostoc and land plants.

Genetic and lipidomic analyses suggest that Nostoc punctiforme, a plant-symbiotic cyanobacterium, does not produce sphingolipids

Sphingolipids, a class of amino-alcohol-based lipids, are well characterized in eukaryotes and in some anaerobic bacteria. However, the only sphingolipids so far identified in cyanobacteria are two ceramides (i.e., an acetylsphingomyelin and a cerebroside), both based on unbranched, long-chain base (LCB) sphingolipids in Scytonema julianum and Moorea producens, respectively. The first step in de novo sphingolipid biosynthesis is the condensation of l-serine with palmitoyl-CoA to produce 3-keto-diyhydrosphingosine (KDS). This reaction is catalyzed by serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), which belongs to a small family of pyridoxal phosphate-dependent α-oxoamine synthase (AOS) enzymes. Based on sequence similarity to molecularly characterized bacterial SPT peptides, we identified a putative SPT (Npun_R3567) from the model nitrogen-fixing, plant-symbiotic cyanobacterium, Nostoc punctiforme strain PCC 73102 (ATCC 29133). Gene expression analysis revealed that Npun_R3567 is induced during late-stage diazotrophic growth in N. punctiforme. However, Npun_R3567 could not produce the SPT reaction product, 3-keto-diyhydrosphingosine (KDS), when heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. This agreed with a sphingolipidomic analysis of N. punctiforme cells, which revealed that no LCBs or ceramides were present. To gain a better understanding of Npun_R3567, we inferred the phylogenetic position of Npun_R3567 relative to other bacterial AOS peptides. Rather than clustering with other bacterial SPTs, Npun_R3567 and the other cyanobacterial BioF homologues formed a separate, monophyletic group. Given that N. punctiforme does not appear to possess any other gene encoding an AOS enzyme, it is altogether unlikely that N. punctiforme is capable of synthesizing sphingolipids. In the context of cross-kingdom symbiosis signalling in which sphingolipids are emerging as important regulators, it appears unlikely that sphingolipids from N. punctiforme play a regulatory role during its symbiotic association with plants.

Microbial enhancement of plant nutrient acquisition

Nutrient availability is a determining factor for crop yield and quality. While fertilization is a major approach for improving plant nutrition, its efficacy can be limited and the production and application of fertilizers frequently bring problems to the environment. A large number of soil microbes are capable of enhancing plant nutrient acquisition and thereby offer environmentally benign solutions to meet the requirements of plant nutrition. Herein we provide summations of how beneficial microbes enhance plant acquisition of macronutrients and micronutrients. We also review recent studies on nutrition-dependent plant-microbe interactions, which highlight the plant's initiative in establishing or deterring the plant-microbe association. By dissecting complex signaling interactions between microbes within the root microbiome, a greater understanding of microbe-enhanced plant nutrition under specific biotic and abiotic stresses will be possible.

Latent Pathogenic Fungi in the Medicinal Plant Houttuynia cordata Thunb. Are Modulated by Secondary Metabolites and Colonizing Microbiota Originating from Soil

Latent pathogenic fungi (LPFs) affect plant growth, but some of them may stably colonize plants. LPFs were isolated from healthy Houttuynia cordata rhizomes to reveal this mechanism and identified as Ilyonectria liriodendri, an unidentified fungal sp., and Penicillium citrinum. Sterile H. cordata seedlings were cultivated in sterile or non-sterile soils and inoculated with the LPFs, followed by the plants' analysis. The in vitro antifungal activity of H. cordata rhizome crude extracts on LPF were determined. The effect of inoculation of sterile seedlings by LPFs on the concentrations of rhizome phenolics was evaluated. The rates of in vitro growth inhibition amongst LPFs were determined. The LPFs had a strong negative effect on H. cordata in sterile soil; microbiota in non-sterile soil eliminated such influence. There was an interactive inhibition among LPFs; the secondary metabolites also regulated their colonization in H. cordata rhizomes. LPFs changed the accumulation of phenolics in H. cordata. The results provide that colonization of LPFs in rhizomes was regulated by the colonizing microbiota of H. cordata, the secondary metabolites in the H. cordata rhizomes, and the mutual inhibition and competition between the different latent pathogens.

Sustaining Rice Production through Biofertilization with N2-Fixing Cyanobacteria

Current agricultural productivity depends on an exogenous nutrient supply to crops. This is of special relevance in cereal production, a fundamental part of the trophic chain that plays a vital role in the human diet. However, our agricultural practices entail highly detrimental side-effects from an environmental point of view. Long-term nitrogen fertilization in croplands results in degradation of soil, water, and air quality, producing eutrophication and subsequently contributing to global warming. In accordance with this, there is a biotechnological interest in using nitrogen-fixing microorganisms to enhance crop growth without adding chemically synthesized nitrogen fertilizers. This is particularly beneficial in paddy fields, where about 60% of the synthetic fertilizer that has been applied is dissolved in the water and washed away. In these agricultural systems, N2-fixing cyanobacteria show a promising biotechnological potential as biofertilizers, improving soil fertility while reducing the environmental impact of the agricultural practice. In the current study, Andalusian paddy fields have been explored to isolate N2-fixing cyanobacteria. These endogenous microorganisms have been subsequently re-introduced in a field trial in order to enhance rice production. Our results provide valuable insights regarding the use of an alternative natural source of nitrogen for rice production.
