Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary fats, fed to ruminant animals, have been observed to improve reproductive function. Sunflower oil is one of the richest sources of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), over 60% of which is linoleic acid (C18:2). With regard to recommendations for increased consumption of PUFAs, special emphasis has been given to the importance of consuming more antioxidants to prevent lipid peroxide formation. This study evaluated the effects of dietary n-6 PUFAs and vitamin C (VC) in rams - in particular, on semen quality, blood metabolites, sperm lipids and overall fertility. RESULTS Diets supplemented with SFO and VC increased the proportion of motile sperms and their progressive motility improved (P < 0.01). Rams fed a diet containing SFO had an increased proportion of sperms with normal acrosomes in their semen samples (P < 0.01). The highest levels of lactate dehydrogenase activity (LDH) enzyme were found in control rams (2.60 U mL-1 ). Feeding SFO significantly affected blood triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations (P < 0.05). Diets containing SFO increased the proportion of C18:2c, C20:4, C20:3 and C22 in the sperm lipid composition (P < 0.05). Semen of SFO and VC-fed rams was more fertile than that of control rams when it was artificially inseminated to ewes. CONCLUSION Feeding rams with supplemental SFO and VC increased semen quality and improved fertility rates. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
AbstractAn effective method for enhancing milk production efficiency in dairy cows is to increase milk yield and significant progress has been achieved through intense selection, assisted by the application of new reproductive techniques. However this increased milk yield has been accompanied by a slow but steady decline in dairy cow fertility. The two main reasons for this reducing level of fertility appear to be selection for increased milk yield and large herd sizes, although the affect of the introduction of Holstein genes needs to be investigated. In addition, other negative consequences such as an increase in the incidence of metabolic diseases and lameness have been observed. This has given rise to public concern that the high-yielding dairy cow may be under a state of metabolic stress during peak lactation and therefore the welfare and performance of other body functions are compromised.The reason for this decline in fertility is not well understood, although a nutritional influence on the initiation of oestrous cycles, follicular growth, oocyte quality and early embryonic development has been implicated. In early lactation dietary intake is unable to meet the demands of milk production and most cows enter a period of negative energy balance. Negative energy balance has a broadly similar effect to undernutrition leading to a mobilization of body reserves. Furthermore diets high in rumen degradable protein lead to an excess of rumen ammonia, which before it is converted to urea by the liver and excreted in the urine, may cause an alteration in the reproductive tract environment reducing embryo survival. Such major changes in the metabolic and endocrine systems can therefore influence fertility at a number of key points.Possible reproductive sites where inadequate nutrition may have detrimental effects include: (i) the hypothalamic/pituitary gland where gonadotropin release may be impaired; (ii) a direct effect on the ovaries, where both follicular growth patterns and corpus luteum function may be directly influenced; (iii) the quality of the oocyte prior to ovulation may be reduced and coupled with an inadequate uterine environment will result in reduced embryo survival and (iv) there may be effects on subsequent embryo development. The initiation of normal oestrous cycles post partum is usually delayed in dairy cows with a higher genetic merit for milk production, confirming that intense selection towards high milk yield can compromise reproductive function. In addition, the effects of increased milk yield may include changes in circulating GH and insulin concentrations, which in turn alter both insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and IGF binding protein production. Nutrition has recently been shown to have a direct effect at the level of both the ovaries and the uterus to alter the expression of these growth factors.In conclusion, further knowledge is required to determine how the metabolic changes associated with high milk output reduce fertility. Identification and understanding of the mechanisms involved and the key sites of action responsible for compromised reproductive function, will enable the identification of possible indices for future multiple-trait selection programmes.

Abstract
AbstractThe effect of a dietary supplement of calcium soaps of fatty acids on luteal steroidogenic activity was studied in sheep. Mature 3- to 5-year-old North Country Cheviot ewes were given either a pelleted control diet (C; grass, beet pulp, barley; no. = 15) providing daily, 29⋅8 g nitrogen and 13⋅7 MJ of metabolizable energy (ME) or the same diet with 5% (w/w) of the ingredients replaced with protected lipid (C + CaFA; calcium soaps of fatty acids, Megalac, Volac Etd; no. = 15) for 21 days. The latter diet provided daily 30⋅2 g nitrogen and 15⋅9 MJ ME. At the end of the feeding period the ewes were slaughtered and blood samples and ovaries were collected from individual animals. The numbers of large- (≤ 4 mm diameter) and small- to medium-sized (1 to 3 mm diameter) follicles were recorded and follicular fluids from both size groups were stored for later analyses following centrifugation. Each mature corpus luteum (CL) was isolated from its ovary and sliced to provide a pair of ca. 0⋅3 mm diameter sections. These sections (mean = 163 (s.e.12) mg) were cultured separately (4 h; 39°C; 5% CO2) in 3 ml Medium 199 in the absence or presence of 100 μIU LH. Dietary supplementation of calcium soaps of fatty acids increased progesterone concentrations in the plasma (P < 0⋅05) and follicular fluid (P < 0⋅01 and P < 0⋅05 for large and small to medium follicles, respectively); trigylcerides in plasma (P < 0⋅05); total cholesterol in plasma (P < 0⋅001) and follicular fluid (P < 0⋅001); HDL-cholesterol in plasma (P < 0⋅001) and follicular fluid (P < 0⋅01) and LDL-cholesterol in plasma (P < 0⋅01). Progesterone released by luteal tissue into the culture medium in vitro from ewes given protected lipid was higher than that from tissue of control ewes (P < 0⋅05) and supplementary LH in vitro stimulated progesterone secretion by luteal tissues from both groups (P < 0⋅05). In conclusion, a dietary supplement of calcium soaps of fatty acids altered the intra-follicular environment surrounding the oocyte and follicular cells and enhanced luteal function in sheep.

Abstract
Twenty-four 3-year-old Angus cows (512.2±21.6 kg) and six ruminally cannulated beef heifers (523.1±16.9 kg) were used to determine the impact of feeding oilseeds starting at the beginning of estrous synchronization until maternal recognition of pregnancy on plasma fatty acid composition. Starting ~60 days postpartum cows were synchronized with the Select Synch+controlled internal drug-release (CIDR) device and timed artificial insemination (AI) protocol. The day CIDR was inserted; cattle were randomly assigned to one of the three treatments being grazing only (CON) or a supplement containing whole soybeans (SOY); or whole flaxseed (FLX). Cattle continued to receive these diets for 28 days. Blood was collected every 3 days until 10 days after insemination and then every day until 18 days after insemination. All cattle grazed a common pasture and supplemented cattle were individually fed their respective supplements once daily. Ruminally cannulated heifers were used to evaluate the impact supplements had on forage intake, which was reduced (P=0.05) with oilseed supplementation. Feeding oilseeds increased total fatty acid intake (P<0.001) across treatments with SOY having greater (P<0.001) 18:2n-6 intake than either CON or FLX. Likewise, cattle fed FLX had greater (P<0.001) 18:3n-3 intake than either CON or SOY. There was a treatment×time interaction (P≤0.05) for all fatty acids identified except for 20:5n-3 (P=0.99). Within 3 days after the start of supplementation, plasma concentrations of 18:2n-6 increased (P<0.001) for cattle fed SOY compared with CON or FLX, whereas flax-fed cattle did not exhibit an increase (P=0.02) until day 15 of supplementation over that of CON. Plasma concentrations for 18:3n-3 was greater (P<0.013) for FLX than both CON and SOY by day 12. Feeding flaxseed tended to (P=0.07) increase and increased (P=0.01) plasma concentrations of 20:4n-6 by day 18 over CON and SOY, respectively. Overall, treatment did not affect serum concentration of progesterone (P=0.18) or prostaglandin F metabolite (P=0.89). However, day after breeding had an effect on serum progesterone (P=0.01) with day 16 after timed AI being lower compared with other days. Feeding oilseeds during the time of estrous synchronization will not only increase the energy density of the diet but will provide key fatty acids around the time of maternal recognition of pregnancy.

Abstract
Folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies are associated with high reproductive risks ranging from infertility to fetal structural defects. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of preconceptional omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) to a micronutrient-deficient diet on the reproductive cycle in Wistar rats. Female rats were divided into five groups from birth and throughout pregnancy: a control group, a folic acid-deficient (FD) group, a vitamin B12-deficient (BD) group, a folic acid-deficient + omega-3 fatty acid-supplemented (FDO) group and a vitamin B12 deficient + omega-3 fatty acid-supplemented (BDO) group. Dams were killed on gestation Day 20 and their ovaries and mammary glands were dissected out and subjected to histological examination. Maternal micronutrient deficiency (FD and BD groups) resulted in an abnormal oestrous cycle (P < 0.001), whereas omega-3 fatty acid supplementation (FDO and BDO groups) restored the oestrous cycle to normal. There were fewer corpora lutea in the ovaries of FD rats compared with controls. In addition, rats in both the FD and BD groups exhibited an absence of lactating ducts in their mammary glands compared with controls. The findings of the present study indicate, for the first time, that maternal micronutrient deficiency affects the oestrous cycle and morphology of the ovary and mammary glands. Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation ameliorated these effects. This may have implications for infertility and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to examine the effects of dietary n-3 or n-6 fatty acid (FA) supplementation on blood FA, metabolite and hormone concentrations, follicle size and dynamics and corpus luteum (CL) size. Reproductively normal heifers (n = 24) were individually fed diets of chopped straw and concentrate containing either (i) no added lipid (CON; n = 8); (ii) 2% added fat as whole raw soya beans (WSB, n-6; n = 8); or (iii) 2% added fat as fish oil (FO, n-3; n = 8). Following oestrous cycle synchronisation, blood samples were collected at appropriate times and intervals for the measurement of hormones, FAs and metabolites. On days 15 and 16 of the cycle, animals were subjected to an intravenous oxytocin challenge and prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) response, measured as venous concentrations of 13,14-dihydro-15-keto PGF2α (PGFM). Dry matter intake and average daily gain were similar among treatments (P > 0.05). Plasma concentration of linoleic acid was highest on WSB (P < 0.05), while eicosapentaenoic (EPA, n-3; P < 0.0001) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, n-3; P < 0.0001) were greatest in the FO group. Plasma concentrations of arachidonic acid were higher on FO (P < 0.05) compared with CON and WSB. Plasma triglyceride concentrations increased, while β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) decreased with time on all diets (P < 0.05). There was a diet × time interaction (P < 0.01) for non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations. Plasma cholesterol was higher on WSB and FO (P < 0.01) compared with CON. Progesterone (P4) and oestradiol (E2) concentrations, as well as follicle growth rate and CL diameter were similar across diets (P > 0.05). There was a diet × day interaction for PGFM (P < 0.01). When corrected for systemic E2 : P4 ratio, day 15 concentrations of PGFM were higher in the WSB group at 15 and 30 min (P < 0.01) post oxytocin administration compared with CON and FO, which were similar (P > 0.05). Concentrations of PGFM on day 16 were similar for WSB and FO and were greater than CON at 15 (P < 0.01) and 45 min (P < 0.05) post oxytocin administration, and at 30 min for FO (P < 0.05). With the exception of PGFM, dietary lipid source did not affect the reproductive variables measured.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to elucidate the effect of different sources of dietary energy (maize vs polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) on semen functional parameters and fertility of adult rams. Eighteen adult rams were divided into two groups (maize and PUFA, n=9). The main energy source for the rams in the maize group was coarsely ground maize grain, whereas in the PUFA group it was sunflower oil (rich in 18:2 linoleic acid, an omega-6 acid). The ration was fed for a minimum period of 60 days and thereafter semen was collected for evaluation. The proportion of progressive forward motility was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the PUFA group compared with the maize group. Sperm lipid peroxidation as measured by malondialdehyde formation (µM per 1×10(9) spermatozoa) was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the PUFA group compared with the maize group. When the semen was diluted with Tris-egg yolk-citrate buffer and incubated for 24h at 4°C, the proportions of plasmalemma integrity, the sperm subpopulation positive for functional membrane and acrosomal integrities, and mitochondrial membrane potential were significantly (P<0.05) higher in PUFA-fed than in maize-fed animals. The different sources of energy did not influence the serum and seminal plasma IGF-I levels. The cleavage rate (percentage) did not differ significantly between PUFA- (45.4±4.91) and maize- (44.63±6.8) fed animals. In conclusion, PUFA feeding influenced sperm quality by altering or stabilising membrane integrity. The present study indicates that PUFA may improve semen quality but did not improve in vitro fertilisation.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the role of a short-term increase in linolenic acid around the timed artificial insemination (TAI) on plasma fatty acid concentrations, estrous behavior, and pregnancy. Therefore, 96 cross-bred heifers (Initial BW=394±18.1 kg) fed chopped grass hay were allotted to one of three dietary treatments: no supplement (CON); 1.8 kg head−1 d−1 (DM basis) of a soybean-based pellet (SOY) high in linoleic acid (C18:2n-6); or 1.5 kg head−1 d−1 (DM basis) of a flaxseed-based pellet (FLX) high in linolenic acid (C18:3n-3). On day −9, relative to TAI, supplementation began, and heifers received a controlled internal drug-releasing (CIDR) device and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH; 100 µg). On day −2, CIDRs were removed and heifers received 25 mg prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α). Heifers were bred by TAI (day 0) 54 h after CIDR removal and received GnRH. Estrous behavior was monitored throughout the feeding period by radiotelemetry. Supplementation ended on day 18 relative to TAI. Plasma concentrations of C18:2n-6 were greater by day 0 and day 18 (P<0.001) above that of CON for both SOY and FLX with SOY being greater than (P<0.001) FLX. Likewise, C18:3n-3 was also greater for supplemented heifers by day 0 and day 18 (P<0.001). The number of heifers that did not respond to estrous synchronization was not affected by dietary treatment (P=0.61). Conception to AI was not affected by treatment (P=0.24). Overall pregnancy rates tended to be lower for FLX (P=0.08) than SOY. Conception to a TAI program was not enhanced when oilseeds were fed to beef heifers during estrous synchronization and continuing past day 18 relative to artificial insemination.

Abstract
Prostaglandins are exclusively synthesized in vivo from cell membrane essential fatty acids and together are known to regulate many aspects of reproductive processes. The objective of the study was to examine whether disturbances in fatty acid profile as a result of increased oxidative stress could be one of the causes of female infertility. Forty-five infertile and 30 control women were enrolled via the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Bharati Medical College Hospital, Pune, India. Essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, malondialdehyde (MDA; oxidative stress-marker) levels and antioxidants (vitamins E and C) were measured in both groups. Results show that plasma eicosapentaenoic acid and erythrocyte docosahexaenoic acid levels were reduced (p < 0.05) in infertile women as compared to controls. Likewise, levels of MDA, a peroxidative product of essential fatty acids, were increased (p < 0.05) and vitamin E concentrations were decreased (p < 0.05) in infertile women, suggesting that increased oxidative stress and consequent altered essential polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with infertility. Our study indicates, for the first time, the cause and effect relationship between oxidative stress and membrane essential polyunsaturated fatty acids in infertile women. These data have important implications for the supplementation of a combination of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants in the successful management of female infertility.

Abstract
Experiments were carried out to study the effect of feeding Megalac, calcium soaps of fatty acids (protected fat), on reproduction and lactation of sheep. In the first experiment, 20 Ghezel and 20 Mehraban cyclic fertile ewes (4-5 years old) were randomly allotted to 4 groups. The control group was fed with a balanced ration and the other groups received the same diet as well as a daily allowance of 40 g non-protected fat (NP), 40 g protected fat (LP), or 80 g (HP) protected fat. The ewes were fed with their respective rations for one cycle length. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for progesterone (P4), cholesterol (CHOL), High Density Lipoproteins (HDL), Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and triacylglycerols (TG). The ewes were slaughtered on their next estrous period and the size and number of follicles in ovaries were recorded. There were no significant effects of feeding fat on ovarian weights, cycle length and follicular numbers in each class, or on the size of the largest follicle. Serum concentrations of P4, CHOL, TG and HDL were greater for HP ewes as compared with the control ewes (p<0.05). In the second experiment, effects on lactation and lamb performance of feeding protected fat during mating, late gestation and early lactation were studied in Mehraban ewes. Milk and fat yields on day 25 of lactation were significantly increased by feeding protected fat. Protected fat resulted in lower weight loss in ewes and a higher lamb birth weight. Average daily weight gain of lambs from birth to day 60 and the weaning weight of lambs were increased by feeding protected fat (p<0.05). In conclusion, calcium soaps of fatty acids increased serum P4 between days 10 to 14 of the cycle which may be beneficial to early pregnancy maintenance. Protected fat seemed to have a beneficial effect on milk yield, fat yield, lamb daily gain, lamb birth weight and ewe weight loss.

Abstract
Recent studies have implicated n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the reduction of eicosanoid production in the bovine uterus. The objective of this study was to determine whether the effect of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; C(20:5), n-3) on PGF2alpha production by bovine endometrial (BEND) cells is influenced by the quantity of linoleic acid (C(18:2), n-6) in the incubation medium. Confluent BEND cells were incubated in the absence (control) or presence of 100 microM of EPA for 24 h. After incubation, cells were rinsed and then stimulated with phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate (PDBu; 100 ng/mL) for 6 h. Additional sets of culture dishes were treated with a combination of EPA and increasing n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratios for 24 h and then challenged with PDBu for 6 h. The PDBu stimulated PGF2alpha secretion and upregulated steady-state concentrations of prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-2 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta mRNA within 6 h. Preincubation of BEND cells with EPA for 24 h decreased PGF2alpha response to phorbol ester, but had no detectable effects on prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase-2 or peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta mRNA abundance in PDBu-stimulated BEND cells. The inhibitory effect of EPA on PGF2alpha production was reverted in BEND cells treated with an increasing n-6-to-n-3 fatty acid ratio. Findings indicate that the net inhibition of endometrial PGF2alpha bioynthesis by n-3 fatty acids may vary depending on the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids in the uterus.

Abstract
The present experiment was conducted to determine the influence of dietary fatty acids C18:2n-6 and C18:3n-3 on the modulation of intrauterine synthesis of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and F2alpha (PGF2alpha) during early pregnancy in pigs. Prostaglandin E2 in uterine fluid has been previously reported to be associated with embryo survival and development. Thirty-two Yorkshire-Landrace nulliparous gilts were randomly allocated to four diets containing 5% supplemental fat. The four dietary treatments were: HT, hydrogenated tallow (26.5% C16:0 and 54.8% C18:0); SO, sunflower oil (61.3% C18:2n-6); LO, linseed oil (50.4% C18:3n-3); and SO(CLA), a mixture of sunflower oil and conjugated linoleic acids to provide 20% CLA. Treatments started 2 d after the first pubertal estrus (d -21) and lasted for 36 d (slaughter), which was 15 d after the second estrus (d 0; insemination). Fatty acids and PGE2 were measured in the peripheral blood plasma on d -19, d -7, d 0, and d 14. Fatty acids in endometrial tissues and PGE2 and PGF2alpha in the uterine fluid collected on d 15 were also measured. Concentrations of fatty acids in the plasma reflected the content of fatty acids in the diet as early as d -7. From d -7, PGE2 concentrations in the plasma were higher in gilts fed SO compared with HT (P < 0.05). Plasma PGE2 concentrations were lower (P < 0.01) on d 14 in gilts fed LO compared with HT. Total PGF2alpha contents in the uterine fluid of gilts fed LO were more than 70% lower (P < 0.05) than for the HT group. A similar trend was observed for total PGE2 content and for the ratio PGF2alpha:PGE2, but the effect (LO vs HT) was less marked (P < 0.07 and P < 0.10, respectively). There was no effect of SO or SO(CLA) on total PGE2 contents in the uterine fluid. Dietary enrichment in C18:2n-6 and/or C18:3n-3 for early pregnant gilts can influence fatty acids in plasma and endometrial tissue and can modulate circulatory and intrauterine prostaglandins.

Abstract
Effects of a dietary lipid supplement containing calcium salts of fatty acids and methionine hydroxy analogue on plasma prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) metabolite (PGFM) and milk fatty acid profiles were examined in 40 late lactation, nonpregnant, Holstein-Friesian cows for a period of 70 days. Effects on milk production, milk composition, and blood metabolites were also examined. Cows were paired on the basis of lactation number (first lactation, n = 8; second lactation, n = 32) and randomly assigned from within pairs to one of two dietary treatments: unsupplemented control (C) or 400 g per cow per day of the lipid supplement (S). Cows receiving the supplement had higher (P < 0.05) total milk production, total fat production (kg), and total lactose production (kg). Plasma cholesterol was significantly higher (P < 0.01) after 30 days of treatment in cows receiving the supplement. Cows receiving the supplement had lower (P < 0.01) concentrations of short chain milk fatty acids (C4:0 to C14:1) and higher concentrations of long chain fatty acids (C18:1 and C18:2; P < 0.01) than control animals. Oxytocin-induced prostaglandin release on Day 16 postovulation was increased (P < 0.01) in cows receiving the supplement. In conclusion, supplementation with calcium salts of fatty acids and methionine hydroxy analogue significantly increased milk yield and plasma PGFM.

Abstract
When methods of drug intervention are being developed to control estrous cycles, a thorough understanding of the endocrine and functional changes together with the reproductive behavior of the animals are essential. This review presents our current knowledge on reproductive endocrinology, physiology and behavior, and the methods of drug intervention to control estrous cycles. It also describes current efforts to develop advanced drug delivery systems that meet the animal scientist's demands to control the estrous cycle in cattle.

Abstract
The objective of the experiment was to examine the interaction of endophyte-infected tall fescue and environmental temperature on follicular and luteal development and function in beef heifers. Heifers were fed endophyte-free or endophyte-infected tall fescue seed at thermoneutral or heat stress temperatures (n = 6/treatment) 4 wk before and 3 wk after synchronized ovulation. All heifers were subjected to thermoneutral conditions (19 degrees C, 50% relative humidity) from Days -7 to -2; temperature increased incrementally from Days -1 to 0 and cycled between 25 degrees C and 31 degrees C between Days 1 and 20 for heat-stressed heifers. Serum was collected and ovaries monitored every other day after induced luteolysis between Days 1 and 23 or until ovulation. Size and location of follicles >4 mm and corpora lutea were recorded. Serum concentrations of prolactin were reduced in heat-stressed heifers fed infected seed and both heat stress and infected seed decreased total cholesterol. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were greatest in heifers fed the infected seed when exposed to maximal temperatures. Heat stress led to reduced diameter of the corpus luteum and serum progesterone compared with thermoneutral conditions. Progesterone was reduced more so in heifers fed infected seed. The combination of infected seed and heat stress was associated with reduced diameter of the preovulatory dominant follicle, and consumption of infected seed led to fewer large follicles during the estrous cycle. Both stressors led to reduced serum estradiol. Impaired follicle function may explain reduced pregnancy rates commonly observed in heifers grazing infected tall fescue pasture.

Abstract
Effects of lipid infusion into postpartum (PP) beef heifers on plasma concentrations of linoleic acid and prostaglandin (PG) F(2alpha) metabolite (PGFM), days to first estrus, and subsequent pregnancy rate were examined. Treatments (n = 5 per group) of 1 L intralipid (20% soybean oil; IL), 1 L 50% dextrose (DEXT; isocaloric to IL), 0.5 L intralipid (0.5 IL), and 1 L physiological saline (SAL) were infused i.v. over 4 h on each of Days 7 through 11 PP. Capacity of the uterus to produce PG was evaluated after i.v. injection of 150 IU of oxytocin (OT) to IL- and DEXT-treated heifers Day 12 PP. Change in plasma concentrations of PGFM from 0 to 4 h was greater for IL-treated heifers than for heifers given other treatments on Day 7 (P = 0.04) and on Day 11 (P = 0.01), but not on Day 9 (P>0.10). Plasma linoleic acid on Day 11 and OT-induced release of PGFM on Day 12 were greater in IL-treated heifers compared with DEXT-treated heifers (P<0.06 and P = 0.01, respectively). There were no significant differences among treatments for mean days to first estrus or pregnancy rate. Infusion of lipid increased systemic concentrations of linoleic acid and increased the capacity of PP heifers to produce uterine PGF(2alpha) as indicated by plasma PGFM concentration after OT injection.

Abstract
Several studies over the past 20 years have demonstrated that subjects on diets composed of substances with high levels of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (e.g. fish) have a decreased incidence of heart disease. On this basis, a recent report from the Department of Health has advised UK consumers to decrease the proportion of saturated as opposed to unsaturated fats in their diet and to increase the ratio of n-3 to n-6 PUFAs. This could be achieved by altering the amounts of these constituents in milk and meat. n-3 Fatty acids can most easily be added to animal feed as either fish oil or linseed oil and can be increased in the blood and milk of ruminants following protection to avoid hydrogenation in the rumen. In western countries the ratio of consumption of n-6 to n-3 PUFAs is greater than 10 and current evidence tends to suggest that a ratio nearer 5 would be more desirable and compatible with cardiovascular well being. As fertility in the UK dairy herd is already poor, it is important to establish whether alterations in dietary n-3 and n-6 PUFAs affects herd fertility before widespread changes in animal diets are recommended. Therefore, this review considers the role played by PUFAs and eicosanoids in fertility, with particular reference to the implications for farm livestock production. The evidence reviewed shows that alteration of the concentration and ratio of n-6 and n-3 PUFAs in feeds can influence prostaglandin synthesis/metabolism in a number of mammalian systems. The changed patterns of prostaglandin synthesis can as a consequence, affect the diverse functions (e.g. hormone secretion) that are normally mediated via prostaglandins. Similarly, changes in prostaglandin synthesis effected through manipulation of PUFAs has a major bearing on fertility (as PGs affect many reproductive parameters, e.g. ovulation). Several studies in cattle and other mammals, show that feeding or infusing different types of fat with varying PUFA content to females can alter: the number and size of ovarian follicles, the ovulation rate, progesterone production by the corpus luteum, the timing of luteolysis and gestational length. In the male most recent work has focussed on sperm production and experiments in fowl have demonstrated clear effects of dietary PUFAs on both the sperm membrane phospholipid composition and on fertilizing ability.

Abstract
A positive correlation has been shown between dietary intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in late pregnancy and gestation length in pregnant women and experimental animals. To determine whether omega-3 fatty acids have an effect on preterm labor in sheep, a fish oil concentrate emulsion was continuously infused to six pregnant ewes from 124 days gestational age. At 125 days, betamethasone was administered to the fetus to produce preterm labor. Both the onset of labor and the time of delivery were delayed by the fish oil emulsion. Two of the omega-3-infused ewes reverted from contractions to nonlabor, an effect never previously observed for experimental glucocorticoid-induced preterm labor in sheep. Maternal plasma estradiol and maternal and fetal prostaglandin E2 rose in control ewes but not in those infused with omega-3 fatty acid. The ability of omega-3 fatty acids to delay premature delivery in sheep indicates their possible use as tocolytics in humans. Premature labor is the major cause of neonatal death and long-term disability, and these studies present information that may lead to a novel therapeutic regimen for the prevention of preterm delivery in human pregnancy.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma concentrations of progesterone (P4) from a controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR) device (approximately 2 ng/ml) were adequate to sustain a persistent first wave dominant follicle (FWDF) in low body condition (LBC, body condition score [BCS] 1 = lean, 5 = fat [2.3 +/- 0.72, n = 4]) compared with high body condition (HBC, BCS = 4.4 +/- 0.12, n = 4) nonlactating dairy cows. On Day 7 of the estrous cycle (Day 0 = estrus), cows were treated with PGF2 alpha (25 mg i.m. Lutalyse, P.M., and Day 8 A.M.) and a used CIDR device containing P4 (1.2 g) was inserted into the vagina until ovulation or Day 16. Plasma was collected for P4 and estradiol (E2) analyses from Day 5 to Day 18 (or ovulation), and ovarian follicles were monitored daily by ultrasonography. Mean concentrations of plasma P4 were greater in HBC than LBC cows between Days 5 and 7 (4.6 > 3.4 +/- 0.37 ng/ml; P < 0.04). All LBC cows maintained the first wave dominant follicle and ovulated after removal of the CIDR device (18.3 +/- 0.3 d, n = 3; Cow 4 lost the CIDR device on Day 11 and ovulated on Day 15), whereas in the HBC cows ovulation occurred during the period of CIDR exposure (11.3 +/- 0.3 d; n = 3; a fourth cow developed a luteinized first wave dominant follicle that did not ovulate during the experimental protocol on Day 19). Mean day of estrus was 17 +/- 0.4 for LBC (n = 3) and 10 +/- 0.4 for HBC (n = 3) cows. Sustained concentrations of plasma E2 (12.9 +/- 2.8 pg/ml; Days 8 to 17) in LBC cows reflected presence of an active persistent first wave dominant follicle. The differential effect of BCS on concentrations of plasma P4 (y = ng/ml) was reflected by the difference (P < 0.01) in regressions: yLBC = 19.9 - 3.49x + 0.166x2 vs yHBC = 37.3 - 7.04x + 0.340x2 (x = day of cycle, Days 7 to 12). Although P4 concentration was greater for HBC cows prior to Day 8, a greater clearance of plasma P4 released from the CIDR device in the absence of a CL altered follicular dynamics, leading to premature ovulation in the HBC cows. A greater basal concentration of P4 was sustained in LBC cows that permitted maintenance of a persistent first wave dominant follicle.

Abstract
Fat supplementation (about 3% of dietary dry matter) has often positively influenced the reproductive status of the dairy cow, including increased size of the ovulatory follicle, increased numbers of ovarian follicles, increased plasma concentration of progesterone, reduced secretion of prostaglandin metabolite, increased lifespan of the corpus luteum, and improved fertility. Supplemental fat may allay partially negative energy status during the early postpartum period, yet often the positive reproductive influence of supplemental fat has been independent of the energy status of the cow. The fatty acid profile of supplemental fats is influential to their impact. Linoleic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (found in fish meal) are proven inhibitors of cyclooxygenase in endometrial tissue of dairy cows. As a result, endometrial secretion of PGF alpha can be suppressed, thus potentially preventing early embryonic death. This process may be aided by the effect fat has in suppressing estradiol-17 beta secretion, thus reducing uterine PGF2 alpha secretion and decreasing the sensitivity of the corpus luteum to PGF2 alpha. Targeting of dietary fatty acids toward ovarian and uterine function may enhance efficiency of reproductive management and fertility.
