Abstract
The calcium silicate-based sealers currently available on the market have different compositions and formulations, which is why their physical and chemical properties may vary. (1) The aim of the study was to measure the physico-chemical properties of calcium silicate-based sealers and their push-out bond strength to root dentine, comparing two push-out testing protocols. (2) Standardized specimens of EndoSequence BC, BioRoot RCS, MTA Fillapex, and AH Plus (control) were subjected to pH measurements over 28 days. Radiopacity was measured using a CCD sensor, and flexural strength was assessed using a three-point bending setup. Push-out bond strength was measured in coronal, middle, and apical sections of 40 single-root teeth (conventional method), and cylindrical cavities were prepared for all sealers on the same root dentine disks in 11 third molars (disk method). (3) EndoSequence BC exhibited a higher pH than MTA Fillapex and the highest radiopacity (p < 0.05). The highest flexural and push-out bond strengths were found for AH Plus. The push-out bond strength of EndoSequence BC and BioRoot RCS was higher than MTA Fillapex (p < 0.05). The conventional and disk methods exhibited similar push-out bond strength results, but the data were more homogeneously distributed in the disk method. (4) All calcium silicate-based sealers exhibited a higher pH than AH Plus. MTA Fillapex did not meet the ISO standard. Calcium silicate-based sealers showed weaker performance in terms of physical properties compared to AH Plus.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the marginal adaptation of a cold ceramic (CC) sealer with the single-cone obturation technique with that of an AH-26 sealer with the lateral compaction technique in single-canal teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this in vitro experimental study, the root canals of 24 extracted single-rooted single-canal teeth were instrumented to F3 files by the crown-down technique and randomly assigned to 2 groups (n = 12). The root canals were obturated with a CC sealer and single-cone obturation technique with 4% gutta-percha in group 1 and with an AH-26 sealer and lateral compaction technique with 2% gutta-percha in group 2. After 4 weeks of storage at room temperature and 100% humidity, the root ends were sectioned horizontally 3 mm from the apex, and the mean linear distance between the root filling material and the root dentinal wall was measured under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Comparisons were made by the Mann‒Whitney test (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS The mean linear distance (gap) was significantly smaller in the CC sealer/single-cone group than the AH-26/lateral compaction group (6.72 ± 2.57 vs. 12.94 ± 4.82 μm, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Marginal adaptation was significantly higher with the CC sealer and single-cone obturation technique than with the AH-26/lateral compaction technique, suggesting the suitability of the CC sealer and single-cone obturation technique for a hermetic seal in single-canal teeth.

Abstract
This study compared the effects of different final irrigation protocols on the mechanical properties and structural integrity of root dentine. One-hundred eight teeth were instrumented and irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) using conventional irrigation (CI). Teeth were distributed into four groups based on final irrigation protocols: Control Group (CG): 17%EDTA/CI + H2O; G1: 2.5%NaOCl/Passive Ultrasonic Irrigation (PUI) + EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI (60s each); G2: EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI (30s each); G3: EDTA/PUI + NaOCl/PUI + H2O/PUI + CHX/PUI (30s each). Four tests were conducted: three-point flexural strength test, Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis, microhardness assessment, and the push-out bond strength (POBS) of the filling material to the root dentine. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (Flexural strength), and Student t-test (Microhardness). Erosion scores and POBS were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests (α = 0.05). Results indicated no significant differences in flexural strength (p > 0.05) among groups. CG exhibited the lowest erosion scores in the cervical third. In the middle third, CG had lower scores than G1 and G2, while in the apical third, CG had lower scores than G1 (p < 0.05). Microhardness values decreased following the protocols (p < 0.05), except for the CG (p > 0.05). G2 displayed higher POBS values in the middle and apical thirds (p < 0.05). The protocols did not significantly influence the flexural strength of root dentine. However, they did affect microhardness and promoted greater erosion. The best results for POBS were observed when the final irrigation involved the sequential use of EDTA and NaOCl employing PUI for 30 seconds in each solution.

Abstract
Background: Adhesion within endodontic obturation material and root canal walls improves the efficacy of the endodontic treatment by establishing a barrier that inhibits reinfection and entombs residual bacteria. This study evaluates the push-out bond strength (POBS) of calcium silicate sealers compared to an epoxy-resin-based sealer. Methods: A total of 36 extracted mono-radicular teeth were prepared with Pro Taper Ultimate and irrigated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite and 17% EDTA. The specimens were randomly split into three groups (n = 12) according to the endodontic sealer and filling technique used as follows: Ah Plus with the continuous wave condensation technique (CWC), Ah Bioceramic (Ah Bio) with the single-cone technique, and Total Fill Hi-Flow (FKG Hi-Flow) with the CWC technique. The material was allowed to set for 4 weeks, and afterwards, the roots were placed in acrylic resin and sectioned into 1 mm transverse slices. A POBS test was conducted using a universal testing machine, and the mode of bond failure was assessed at 4× magnification using a stereomicroscope. Six specimens from each group were selected for SEM-EDX examination to evaluate dentinal tubule penetration. The data were analysed using analysis of variance and Tukey and Bonferroni post hoc tests. Results: The POBS tests revealed higher values for Ah Plus in comparison to both calcium silicate sealers (p < 0.001), while FKG Hi-Flow showed superior results to Ah Bio (p < 0.001). The cohesive mode of failure was prevalent in all three groups. Conclusions: In conclusion, the resin-based sealer showed higher bond strength and better dentinal tubule penetration than the two calcium silicate sealers tested, while FKG Hi-Flow outperformed AH Bio.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the mixing method of AH Plus Jet sealer affects its physicochemical and mechanical properties. METHODS The properties of AH Plus Jet sealer were analyzed when mixed using either the Auto Mix Tip or manual mixing. The evaluated properties included radiopacity (n = 5), initial and final setting times (n = 5), flow (n = 5), and solubility (n = 3), following specifications outlined in ISO 6876/2012 and ADA Nº 57/2000. pH levels were measured at intervals of 3, 24, 72, and 168 hours (n = 10). The push-out bond strength test was conducted using a universal testing machine and using bovine teeth (n = 30). Failure modes were analyzed with stereomicroscopy. Porosity was evaluated under micro-CT (n = 5), and scanning electron microscopy was also performed (n = 5). One-way analysis of variance and Tukey, unpaired t-tests, or Mann-Whitney tests were used with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The Auto Mix exhibited a radiopacity value of 12.11 mmAl, whereas manual mixing resulted in 12.55 mmAl (P > .05). For initial and final setting times, Auto Mix showed 901 minutes and 1779 minutes, respectively, while manual mixing recorded values of 631 minutes and 1504 minutes (P < .05). In terms of flow, Auto Mix demonstrated higher values (25.26 mm) than manual mixing (21.71 mm) (P < .05). No statistical differences were observed between the two methods for solubility and pH (P > .05). Manual mixing presented a higher bond strength value (14.52 MPa) than Auto Mix (9.81 MPa) (P < .05). The mixed failure mode was the most frequent outcome for both methods. The highest porosity was observed for Auto Mix (P < .05). Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that manual mixing resulted in a smoother surface with fewer pores and smaller, more evenly distributed agglomerates compared to automatic mixing. CONCLUSION The mixing method employed for AH Plus Jet sealer influences some physicochemical and mechanical properties of the material.

Abstract
This scoping review aimed to map whether the use of sonic and ultrasonic methods to activate the endodontic sealer improves the sealer filling quality in the root canal, considering the bond strength and intratubular penetration to the root dentin as evaluation criteria. The study protocol was prospectively registered and is available online ( https://osf.io/x5fma/ ). Reporting was based on PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. The search was performed in Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We selected studies without time and language restrictions that used sonic or ultrasonic methods to activate endodontic sealer, whose outcomes were bond strength and intratubular penetration. Three researchers independently selected the articles and collected data. Of 1422 articles, 19 were read in full and 13 studies were included. The vast majority of studies opted for direct activation of the endodontic sealer. The most investigated sealers were the epoxy resin-based sealers, and the ultrasonic activation method was the most explored. For the bond strength outcome, there was a trend toward higher values when the sealer was activated ultrasonically, but the findings seem to be divergent. The sonic activation was not effective for its intended purpose. For the outcome of intratubular penetration, the vast majority of studies indicate that the use of sonic and ultrasonic methods to activate the endodontic sealer is capable of increasing intratubular penetration. The use of sonic and ultrasonic methods to directly activate the endodontic sealer can increase the intratubular penetration of the sealer, but their benefits on the bond strength are uncertain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gutta-percha (GP) combined with an endodontic sealer is still the core material most widely used for tridimensional obturation. The sealer acts as a bonding agent between the GP and the root dentinal walls. However, one of the main drawbacks of GP core material is the lack of adhesiveness to the sealer. ZnO thin films have many remarkable features due to their considerable bond strength, good optical quality, and excellent piezoelectric, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, offering many potential applications in various fields. This study aimed to explore the influence of GP surface's functionalization with a nanostructured ZnO thin film on its adhesiveness to endodontic sealers. METHODS Conventional GP samples were divided randomly into three groups: (a) Untreated GP (control); (b) GP treated with argon plasma (PT); (c) Functionalized GP (PT followed by ZnO thin film deposition). GP's surface functionalization encompassed a multi-step process. First, a low-pressure argon PT was applied to modify the GP surface, followed by a ZnO thin film deposition via magnetron sputtering. The surface morphology was assessed using SEM and water contact angle analysis. Further comprehensive testing included tensile bond strength assessment evaluating Endoresin and AH Plus Bioceramic sealers' adhesion to GP. ANOVA procedures were used for data statistical analysis. RESULTS The ZnO thin film reproduced the underlying surface topography produced by PT. ZnO thin film deposition decreased the water contact angle compared to the control (p < 0.001). Endoresin showed a statistically higher mean bond strength value than AH Plus Bioceramic (p < 0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the control and the ZnO-functionalized GP (p = 0.006), with the latter presenting the highest mean bond strength value. CONCLUSIONS The deposition of a nanostructured ZnO thin film on GP surface induced a shift towards hydrophilicity and an increased GP's adhesion to Endoresin and AH Bioceramic sealers.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this study, we aimed to compare the effectiveness of various chelating agents, ethilenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), citric acid (CA), and etidronic acid (HEDP) mixed in two different forms, in removing the smear layer and promoting the penetration of an endodontic sealer into the dentinal tubules of extracted single-rooted teeth. METHODS The study used 75 teeth divided into five groups: 17% EDTA, 10% CA, 9% HEDP + NaOCl, 9% HEDP + distilled water (DW), and a control (DW) group. Scanning electron microscopy was used to assess smear layer removal and confocal laser microscopy was used to evaluate tubular sealer penetration at different depths from the apical tip. RESULTS Sealer penetration was highest with 17% EDTA and 10% CA as compared with the other agents (p<0.001). At the cervical third, the sealer penetration for EDTA, HEDP + NaOCl, and HEDP + DW groups were significantly different than those in DW (p = 0.020). For the middle third, EDTA, CA, and HEDP + NaOCl groups were significantly higher than those of the DW group (p<0.001). Cervical-level values were significantly higher than apical-level values for HEDP + NaOCl, HEDP + DW, and DW (p<0.001). Smear layer removal was lower with 9% HEDP + DW than with 17% EDTA and 10% CA at all depths (p<0.001). A significancy in smear layer removal was observed between 10% CA and control (p = 0.015) in middle depth. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, highest values were seen in EDTA and CA in terms of sealer penetration and smear layer removal. In the light of these findings, the use of strong chelating agents highlights better clinical efficiency than dual-rinse or single HEDP irrigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE examination of the influence of chemical composition changes on the ability of sealers to withstand a pull-out test. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty distal or palatal canals of extracted teeth were prepared by Dc Taper files. The teeth were divided into five groups: AH Plus, BJM RCS, Total Fill BC,AH Plus Bioceramic and a group with Gutta Percha with no sealer added. Ten days after obturation, each cone was subjected to the "pull-out test" with the Shimadzo Universal Testing Machine until it was torn or removed from the canal. A force to Stroke graph was generated and the maximum vertex of this graph was recorded. The number of times the cone was torn or removed was recorded. RESULTS The amount of force needed to remove or rupture the cone was significantly higher in all sealer groups compared to the AH Plus Bioceramic group. The force needed for the AH Plus group was double that needed for the AH Plus Bioceramic group 4 (1.87 ± 0.53 N vs 0.93 ± 0.48 N, respectively, P < 0.001). All of the cones (n = 10) in the AH Plus Bio Ceramic Sealer group were removed in their entirety (P = 0.01 compared to each of the other groups). CONCLUSIONS The addition of macromolecules to epoxy sealer does not change the material's ability to withstand the pull-out test. Decreasing the amount of tri- and di-calcium silicate compounds combined with increasing amounts of zirconium oxide in a Bioceramic sealer significantly decreased the material's ability to withstand the pull-out test.

Abstract
This study aimed to review the considerations for choosing a suitable sealer according to various endodontic scenarios. An electronic search of PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science was undertaken for the keywords of 'sealer choosing', 'appropriate sealer', 'suitable sealer', 'sealer for clinical scenario', and 'sealer for clinical situations'. However, the literature review revealed a lack of studies with practical clinical recommendations regarding the choice of appropriate endodontic root canal sealers for particular clinical situations of root canal treatment. Therefore, a narrative review was undertaken under the basis of the characteristics of an epoxy resin-based sealer (ERS) versus a calcium silicate-based sealer (CSS). Based on the evidence found through the review, the choice of an appropriate sealer in a variety of clinical scenarios was proposed. An ERS is recommended for one-visit non-vital cases, teeth with periodontal involvement, cracked teeth, and internal root resorption without root perforation. A CSS is recommended for vital or non-vital cases in multiple visits, teeth with internal root resorption with perforation or internal approach for external cervical resorption, teeth with open apices, and teeth with iatrogenic aberrations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adhesiveness with radicular dentin is absent with gutta-percha, leading to microleakage and hence re-infection. Root canal sealer helps to achieve an adhesive interface between gutta-percha and root dentin thereby resisting the displacement forces during the functioning of teeth which is evaluated by the push-out test. The aim of this study is to compare the push-out bond strength and to assess the relative bond failure between dentin-sealer, sealer-main cone of (1) epoxy resin, (2) silicon, (3) mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), (4) calcium hydroxide, (5) bioceramic, (6) zinc oxide eugenol containing root canal sealers. METHODOLOGY Sixty human permanent lower premolars with one root were collected, disinfected, and decoronated at cemento-enamel junction. Instrumentation was done with a K3 40,0.06 Ni-Ti rotary file and obturated using the main cone and sealer. Based on the sealer utilized, six groups were created: Group 1: AH-Plus, Group 2: RoekoSeal, Group 3: MTA Fillapex, Group 4: Apexit, Group 5: Smart Paste Bio, and Group 6: Procosol. One slice each was obtained from the coronal, middle, and apicalsections of all the obturated canals. Push-out bond strength and failure modes were studied. Statistics involved analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the post hoc Tukey test. RESULTS All three sections exhibited the highest strength for Smart Paste Bio sealer and the least was for RoekoSeal. With all the sealers, the apical section had the highest strength followed by the middle and coronal. CONCLUSION The smart seal system was superior to all other sealers and displayed a good bond to dentin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A number of sealers with different chemistries are badged as Bioceramic, implying biological activity, but have dissimilar properties, which has implications on the sealer properties and will affect the quality and outcome of root canal treatment. This study aimed to assess the physical and chemical properties of 3 hydraulic cement-based sealers, namely BC Universal sealer compared with Totalfill BC sealer and AH Plus Bioceramic. METHODS The microstructure and composition of the sealers were assessed using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy after setting. The crystalline phases were assessed by X-ray diffraction analysis and the leachates were tested using inductively coupled plasma. All testing was performed at 0, 7, and 28 days. The physical properties of film thickness, flow, radiopacity, and solubility were evaluated using ISO 6876:2012 standards. RESULTS All 3 sealers contained calcium, zirconium, and silicon. Totalfill BC had the highest calcium release at 7 and 28 days followed by AH Plus Bioceramic and BC Universal sealer. All 3 sealers adhered to the ISO standard in terms of flow and radiopacity. BC Universal sealer was slightly over the range (>50 μm) for film thickness. All sealers exceeded the solubility range set by ISO 6876:2012. CONCLUSION Although these hydraulic cement sealers had similar components and delivery, the properties varied significantly. The testing of material properties to confirm the suitability for clinical use is necessary.

Abstract
Background An endodontic treatment is considered a success after thorough chemomechanical debridement coupled with obturating root canals in a concrete way thereby providing hermetic seal. Gutta-percha being nonadherent necessitates use of a sealer to achieve hermetic seal. Adequate adhesion of root canal sealer with gutta-percha core and radicular dentin ensures lack of apical leakage. Materials and Methods Sixty extracted mandibular premolars with single root canal decoronated at cementoenamel junction were selected and randomly allocated to two groups (n = 30). Samples in Group 1 were prepared with BT Race file, while Group 2 samples were prepared with BT Race alongwith XP Endo file. Absorbent paper points were used for canal drying and samples were randomly divided into six subgroups. In Subgroup I, obturation was done with bio-ceramic (BC) sealer (Endosequence BC) and BC gutta-percha. In Subgroup II, resin-based (AH plus) sealer and gutta-percha were used. In Subgroup III, calcium hydroxide-based (Sealapex) sealer and gutta-percha were used. Sectioning of root samples was done perpendicularly into coronal, middle, and apical segments of 3 mm each. A universal testing machine was used for sample testing, in which push-out bond strength corresponded to the highest value obtained. Stereomicroscopic (×20) study of the samples determined the failure mode at dentin/sealer/main cone interface. Statistical Analysis Analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's tests were used for data analysis. Results Endosequence BC with XP-Endo files showed the highest mean push-out bond strength (16.31 MPa), whereas Sealapex without XP-Endo file had the lowest values (12.76 MPa). Mixed failure of adhesive and cohesive mode was observed for most samples. Conclusion Adjunctive irrigation agitation technique utilizing XP-Endo Finisher facilitates biofilm eradication from difficult niches in root canals, thereby improving adhesion of sealer and subsequently the sealer bond strength.

Abstract
Introduction Retention of the natural tooth without any symptoms in the oral cavity is one of the prime desires of endodontic treatment. Root canal therapy usually leads to failure when treatment is not up to the mark of acceptable standards. To address these deficiencies, non-surgical endodontic retreatment is the most accepted option with the success rate ranging from 65% to 83%. Forty-five single-rooted mandibular premolars with undeviated canals (as per Schneider's criteria) were obtained and divided further into three groups with 15 specimens along with resin-based sealer solvent in each group: Group 1 - Retreatment rotary file system, Group 2 - Ultrasonics, and Group 3 - Diode laser. Specimens were then evaluated under a stereomicroscope at ×10 after cutting in two halves followed by evaluation of the remaining filling material using Hulsmann and Bluhm criteria. Context Nonsurgical retreatment. Aims The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of various retreatment techniques for the elimination of root canal filling material. Settings and Design The sample size was determined using the formula n = (Zα/2)2 s2/d2. The design of the study is in vitro experimental study. Subjects and Methods A sum of 45 single-rooted extracted human permanent mandibular premolars were included in this study. All teeth were biomechanically prepared and obturated followed by decoronating the samples. All specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups comprising 15 specimens along with solvent based on the technique for the filling material elimination from the root canal, i.e. Group I: retreatment rotary files, Group II: ultrasonics, and Group III: diode laser. Statistical Analysis Used The Tukey's post hoc tests and one-way analysis of variance were used for comparison of the study parameters among the groups. Results Results revealed that ultrasonics showed the least amount of remaining filling material within the root canal which had a significant difference from other groups, i.e. retreatment rotary files and diode laser. Conclusions Ultrasonics with a resin-based sealer solvent can be considered a preferred option for nonsurgical retreatment. However, none of the groups shows complete elimination of filling material inside the root canal system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this article was to Evaluate the influence of sealer on the outcome of non-surgical endodontic treatment or retreatment of permanent teeth with apical periodontitis (PROSPERO registration: CRD42020205951). METHODOLOGY A systematic review of original clinical studies was carried out following PRISMA guidelines to answer whether the type of sealer used in endodontic treatment or retreatment influences the repair of apical periodontitis determined by clinical and radiographic parameters. Electronic searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library database, until May 2023. Gray literature and a hand search of reference lists were also performed. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane RoB2 for randomized trials and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) for prospective and retrospective cohort and case-control studies. RESULTS Among 1046 studies, a total of 819 were selected by title and abstract, resulting in 23 for full-text review. In total, 11 studies met the inclusion criteria (1467 patients/teeth with apical periodontitis). The quality assessment using RoB2 included five randomized control trials, of which four had medium risk and one had a low risk of bias. According to the NOS scale, five studies were classified as low risk and one study was considered as medium risk of bias. The sealer type and obturation techniques varied, and the mean follow-up time was 3.7 years. Most studies used two-dimensional radiographic criteria to assess the treatment outcome sealers and not cements. Eight studies did not find significant differences when comparing cements. The healing rates ranged from 56.7% to 90%. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review support that the current endodontic sealers do not seem to influence the treatment outcome of permanent teeth with apical periodontitis. Although the studies had medium and low risk of bias, the results should be interpreted with caution. More randomized studies of long-term outcomes comparing filling materials are needed to strengthen this claim and allow for a meta-analysis.

Abstract
Gutta-percha's lack of adhesion has been presented as a drawback to avoid gaps at sealer/gutta-percha interface. Plasma treatments have been scarcely assessed on gutta-percha surfaces as a method of enhancing adhesiveness. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-pressure Argon and Oxygen plasma atmospheres on conventional and bioceramic gutta-percha standardized smooth discs, assessing their roughness, surface free energy, chemical structure, and sealer wettability. A Low-Pressure Plasma Cleaner by Diener Electronic (Zepto Model) was used. Different gases (Argon or Oxygen), powers (25 W, or 50 W), and exposure times (30 s, 60 s, 120 s, or 180 s) were tested in control and experimental groups. Kruskal-Wallis and Student's t-test were used in data analysis. Statistically significant differences were detected when P < 0.05. Both gases showed different behaviors according to the parameters selected. Even though chemical changes were detected, the basic molecular structure was maintained. Argon or Oxygen plasma treatments favoured the wetting of conventional and bioceramic gutta-perchas by Endoresin and AH Plus Bioceramic sealers (P < 0.001). Overall, the functionalization of gutta-percha surfaces with Argon or Oxygen plasma treatments can increase roughness, surface free energy and wettability, which might improve its adhesive properties when compared to non-treated gutta-percha.

Abstract
Aim Using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), the current study assessed the impact of nonthermal atmospheric plasma (NTAP) on the dentinal tubule penetration of bioceramic and epoxy resin-based root canal sealers (CLSM). Materials and Methods Forty human mandibular premolar teeth with a single root that had just undergone extraction were chosen and biomechanical preparation of root canals was done with ProTaper Gold rotary Nickel-titanium instruments. Samples were divided into four groups (n = 10). Group 1: Bioceramic sealer (BioRoot RCS); Group 2: Epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) without application of NTAP; Group 3: Bioceramic sealer (BioRoot RCS); and Group 4: Epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus) with the application of NTAP for 30 s. In Groups 3 and 4, all of the samples underwent obturation with the appropriate sealers following NTAP application. For determination of the sealer's dentinal tubule penetration values, slices with a thickness of 2 mm were taken from the middle third of sample's root and examined using CLSM. The acquired data were statistically analyzed with one-way analysis of variance and the Post hoc Tukey's test. The cutoff for statistical significance was P < 0.05. Results In comparison to other groups, the maximum sealer penetration values into dentinal tubules were significantly higher in Group 3 for Bioceramic sealer with NTAP application and Group 4 for Epoxy resin-based sealer with NTAP application. Conclusion NTAP application increased the dentinal tubule penetration of bioceramic and epoxy resin-based sealers in comparison to groups without NTAP application.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES An ideal endodontic sealer should bond to both dentin and root-filling material. This study aimed to assess the push-out bond strength (PBS) of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-Fillapex, Endoseal MTA, AH26, and Sure-Seal Root to root dentin after root canal drying with different techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS This in vitro study was conducted on 160 extracted mandibular premolars. After root canal preparation, the teeth were randomly divided into four groups (n = 40) of drying with ethanol, paper point, air vacuum, and control (wet canal). Each group was divided into four subgroups (n = 10) for use of AH26, Sure-Seal Root, MTA-Fillapex, and Endoseal MTA sealers. The mean PBS was measured by a universal testing machine. The mode of failure was determined under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis and Games-Howell tests. RESULTS The maximum mean PBS was equally recorded in ethanol and paper point groups, and was significantly higher than that of control and air vacuum groups (p < .001). In the use of AH26 sealer, the mean PBS in drying with ethanol was significantly higher than all other methods (p < .05). The mean PBS in drying with a paper point was also significantly higher compared with control and air vacuum methods (p < .05). In the use of Sure-Seal, the mean PBS in drying with a paper point was significantly higher than other methods (p < .05). The mean PBS in drying with ethanol was significantly higher than that in control and air vacuum methods (p < .001). In the use of MTA-Fillapex and Endoseal-MTA, the technique of drying had no significant effect on PBS. Adhesive and mixed failures were the most common in all drying groups. CONCLUSIONS Drying with ethanol and paper point enhanced the PBS of sealers to root dentin.

Abstract
Optimizing the interface between biomaterials and dental hard tissues can prevent leakage of bacteria or inflammatory mediators into periapical tissues and thus avoid alveolar bone inflammation. In this study, an analysis system for testing the periodontal-endodontic interface using gas leakage and subsequent mass spectrometry was developed and validated using the roots of 15 single-rooted teeth in four groups: (I) roots without root canal filling, (II) roots with an inserted gutta-percha post without sealer, (III) roots with gutta-percha post and sealer, (IV) roots filled with sealer only, and (V) adhesively covered roots. Helium was used as the test gas, and its leakage rate was found by measuring the rising ion current using mass spectrometry. This system made it possible to differentiate between the leakage rates of tooth specimens with different fillings. Roots without filling showed the highest leakage values (p < 0.05). Specimens with a gutta-percha post without sealer showed statistically significantly higher leakage values than groups with a filling of gutta-percha and sealer or sealer alone (p < 0.05). This study shows that a standardized analysis system can be developed for periodontal-endodontic interfaces to prevent biomaterials and tissue degradation products from affecting the surrounding alveolar bone tissue.

Abstract
Background/purpose The root fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth is decreased significantly, and it is more likely to fracture. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a novel root canal sealer based on bioactive glass (BG) on root fracture resistance and explore its mechanism. Materials and methods The BG-based root canal sealer (BG Sealer) was prepared by mixing a kind of bioactive glass (10.8% P2O5, 54.2% SiO2, 35% CaO, mol.%, named PSC), zirconia (ZrO2) powder, sodium alginate (SA) and phosphate solution (PS). A pH meter was used to measure the pH of simulated body fluid (SBF) after immersion with BG Sealer at different time. After preparing the samples of BG sealer with a diameter of 4 mm and a height of 6 mm, the compressive strength was tested by a universal testing machine. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to detect and analyze the mineral status of root canal systems filled with BG Sealer. The push out test was used to measure the push out bond strength of BG Sealer. The fracture resistance of root canals filled with BG Sealer was detected by the compressive loading test. Bioceramic root canal sealer iRoot SP was set as the control group. Results (1) Physicochemical properties: The pH value of SBF immersed with BG Sealer increased slightly up to 7.68, while the pH of SBF immersed with iRoot SP increased to 12.08. The compressive strength of the novel BG Sealer was 4.62 ± 1.70 MPa, which was lower than that of iRoot SP (P < 0.05). (2) Mineralization: The hydroxyapatite layers were observed on the surface of BG Sealer and iRoot SP after being immersed in SBF for 4 weeks. BG Sealer and iRoot SP were both able to penetrate into the dentin tubules, duplicate the morphology of root canals well, and form a layer of hydroxyapatite. (3) Adhesion to dentin: There was no significant difference between the push out bond strength of the novel BG Sealer and iRoot SP (P > 0.05). (4) Fracture resistance: After immersion in SBF for 4 weeks, the fracture resistance of roots filled with BG Sealer and iRoot SP was 454.16 ± 155.39 N and 445.50 ± 164.73 N, respectively, both of which were not statistically different from that of the roots unprepared and unfilled (394.07 ± 62.12 N) (P > 0.05), whereas higher than that of the roots prepared and unfilled (235.36 ± 83.80 N) (P < 0.05). Conclusion The novel BG Sealer has good adhesion to the root dentin, can penetrate into the dentin tubules to generate minerals, and meanwhile can improve the fracture resistance of the roots after root canal treatment. It is expected to be a bioactive root canal sealer with good clinical application prospects.

Abstract
Background The long-term use of calcium hydroxide, or Ca(OH)2, on dentin has been established in the literature. However, scarce data is available on dentin wettability with Ca(OH)2. Aim The present study was conducted to assess the outcomes of Ca(OH)2 use on the wettability of dentin following two and four weeks of using sealers of bioceramic (BC) and Tubli-Seal™ in the root canal. Methods In this study, 168 specimens were divided into 12 groups of 14 specimens each and were numbered from G1 to G12. G1-G6 groups were tested with Tubli-Seal. Sterile water irrigation was reserved for G1 for two weeks (14 days) followed by two minutes treatment with 6% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) chemical irrigation and 17% EDTA (10 ml). G2 and G3 were subjected to Ca(OH)2 (0.1 ml of UltraCal) for two weeks followed by 10ml sterile water irrigation for two minutes with chemical irrigation. G4 to G6 were given similar treatment for four weeks. G7-G12 were assessed for BC sealer similarly to G1-G6. Two and four weeks of incubation with sterile water or Ca(OH)2 was done in 100% humidity at 37°C. SEM and EDX were done to evaluate the surface morphology of G1 and G6, and results were formed. Results Significantly smaller contact angles were seen for Tubli-Seal (G1 to G6) compared to BC (G7 to G12) with p<0.05. Application of water irrigants and Ca(OH)2 (in G2, G5, and G11) showed a smaller (p<0.05, statistically significant) contact angle compared to the use of chemical irrigation agents and Ca(OH)2 (in G3, G6, and G12) except for G8 and G9. Based on EDX and SEM, compared to the use of chemical irrigation with Ca(OH)2, higher remnants of Ca(OH)2 were seen in the water irrigation, whereas, no remnant was seen with chemical irrigants. Conclusion Better dentin wettability is seen with Tubli-seal compared to BC sealer. A smaller contact angle between root canal sealers and dentin is seen in the remaining calcium hydroxide samples. Also, calcium hydroxide can be removed from the polished dentin surface with two minutes of irrigation with 17% EDTA and 6% NaOCl.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the bond strength of AH26 to human coronal dentin exposed to DMSO. A total of 70 dentin specimens were equally divided into two groups. Each dentin surface was pre-treated with 2 mL of 2.5% NaOCl, 3 mL of EDTA 17%, and distilled water. One group was finally rinsed with 50% DMSO. Following the AH26 application, the bond strength was tested by subjecting the samples to a shear load at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min using universal testing equipment. The results according to paired samples t-test indicated that there was a statistically insignificant difference between the two groups. Therefore, DMSO had no effect on the bond strength of AH26 root sealer to dentin.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasonic activation (UA) of three endodontic sealers on the bond strength to root dentin and root canal filling quality. Ninety six bovine incisors were instrumented and root canal filling was carried out using AH Plus (AP), Sealer Plus (SP), or Sealer Plus BC (BC), with or without UA (n=16/group). Two 1.5-mm slices were obtained from each root third. The first slice was subjected to push-out testing and failure mode analysis, while the second was observed under a stereomicroscope for filling quality assessment. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney and Friedman tests (α=0.05). SP showed higher bond strength and fewer voids than BC in the apical third and when root thirds data were pooled. SP also had higher bond strength compared with AH Plus in the apical third. UA improved the bond strength when BC was used but did not affect the filling quality of any sealer. There were no significant differences between the ultrasonically activated sealers regarding bond strength and filling quality. When root thirds were compared, the bond strength was similar along the root, but there was a tendency to worsen filling quality, with more voids, in the apical segment. In conclusion, UA was effective in increasing the bond strength of the calcium silicate-based sealer but did not improve its filling quality. For the epoxy resin-based sealers, these properties were not affected by UA.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to systematically analyse the effect of calcium silicate-based sealers in comparison to resin-based sealers on clinical and radiographic outcomes of non-surgical endodontic treatment in permanent teeth. Methods: The study was conducted according to the guidelines of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The literature search was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, DOAJ and OpenGrey with no language restrictions. Two reviewers critically assessed the studies for eligibility. Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) was carried out to assess the evidence. Meta-analysis of the pooled data with subgroups was carried out using the RevMan software (p < 0.05). Results: Results from the included studies showed that there were no significant differences between the groups in the 24 h post-obturation pain levels (mean difference (MD), −0.19, 95% CI = −0.43−0.06, p = 0.14, I2 = 0%), but at 48 h (MD, −0.35, 95% CI = −0.64−0.05, p = 0.02, I2 = 0%), a significant difference was observed in favour of calcium silicate sealers. Furthermore, there were no significant differences between the two sealers due to risk of onset or intensity of postoperative pain, need for analgesic and extrusion of the sealer. The heterogeneity assessed using Q test between the included studies was 97% (I2). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this review, the paper shows that calcium silicate-based sealers exhibited optimal performance with similar results to resin-based sealers in terms of average level of post-obturation pain, risk of onset and pain intensity at 24 and 48 h. The observations from the included studies are informative in the clinical evaluation of calcium silicate-based sealers and provide evidence for the conduction of well-designed, controlled randomised clinical trials for a period of at least four years in the future.

Abstract
Introduction: To evaluate and compare the wettability of bioceramic root canal sealer (BioRoot™ RCS, Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, France) on dentin with and without erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser irradiation using different frequencies and energies. Methods: A hundred single-rooted tooth samples were divided into five groups of 20 samples each. Each group was treated with different methods before sealer application as follows: Group 1: Treated with 2 ml 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) irrigant for one minute (control group); group 2: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (8 Hz frequency and 200mJ energy); group 3: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (8 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy); group 4: Irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 200mJ energy); group 5: (n=20) samples irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy). Bioceramic root canal sealer application was done onto the treated dentin specimen using a micropipette. The contact angle of the drop of the sealer with the dentin surface was measured after five minutes using a contact angle analyzer. Results: There was no significant difference in wettability between Er:YAG laser using 8Hz frequency and 200mJ energy and Er:YAG laser using 8Hz frequency and 400mJ energy. However, there was a significant difference between the other two groups of Er:YAG laser using 16Hz frequency and 400mJ energy and Er: YAG laser using 16Hz frequency and 200mJ energy. Conclusion: Contact angle was found to be lowest in the group that was irradiated with Er:YAG laser for one minute (16 Hz frequency and 400mJ energy) before the sealer application. The test findings demonstrated that the control group had the highest contact angle (low wettability) and it was statistically significant with all other groups.

Abstract
Biocompatibility, dimensional stability, radiopacity, flow, and low solubility are the characteristics of an ideal endodontic sealer. This study evaluated and compared in vivo and in vitro biological and physicochemical properties of calcium silicate-based sealers: Sealer Plus BC (BC), MTA Fillapex (MF); and resin-based sealers: AH Plus (AHP) and Sealer Plus (SP). Apical papilla cells were exposed to sealer extracts and subjected to MTT, SRB, scratch, alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity (ALP) and Alizarin red staining (ALZ) assays. Sealers were histologically evaluated in connective tissue of Wistar rats in different periods. Radiopacity, film thickness, flow, setting time, pH and element analyses were investigated. BC had better results compared to AHP and MF at hour 72 for MTT assay (p < .05), and the highest cell viability under SRB (p < .05). All sealers presented ALP activity. BC presented the highest mineralized deposition under ALZ (p < .05). BC and MF promoted wound healing. All sealers induced an initial inflammation reaction that decreased over time. Eosinophils were observed at day 7 in MF (p < .05). Despite MF did not present final setting time, the sealers properties were in accordance to ISO 6876/2012 and ASTM C266-08. All sealers presented cell viability and biocompatibility. BC presented higher pH values and bioactivity. The materials tested showed physico-chemical properties in accordance with standards, except for MF setting time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the influence of adding bioactive glasses particles [Niobophosphate (NbG) or bioglass (45S5)] into endodontic cements in relation to physical, chemical and biological properties. METHODS The following commercial cements were used as comparison: AH Plus (Dentsply), Endofill (Dentsply), MTA Fillapex (Angelus) and EndoSequence (BC Sealer, Brasseler). Setting time, radiopacity, flow rate, weight loss/variation, alkaline capacity (pH) at different time-intervals (24h/48h/7d/14d/28d), bioactivity (assessed under SEM/EDS, FTIR/ATR and XDR) and cell viability were measured. Data were analyzed by One-way ANOVA/Holm-Sidak post-test (α = 5%) (normal distribution) and Kruskal-Wallis/Students-Newman-Keuls post-test (α = 5%) (non-normal distribution). RESULTS Bioactive endodontic experimental cements (containing NbG or 45S5) had high alkalinization capacity. The experimental cements presented high weight loss/variation (p < 0.001). 45S5 experimental cement did not present radiopacity (p < 0.001). AH Plus had the lowest cell cytotoxicity when compared to the other tested cements (p < 0.001). Regarding bioactivity, SEM/EDS analyses showed precipitates with high concentrations of Ca/P for 45S5 and NbG, as well as for MTA Fillapex and BC Sealer. AH plus and Endofill did not present bioactive precipitates. FTIR/ATR and XDR analyses found hydroxyapatite precursors for NbG, 45S5, MTA Fillapex and BC Sealer. SIGNIFICANCE The incorporation of bioactive particles (NbG or 45S5) into endodontic cements had potential to neutralize acidic environments and induced formation of hydroxyapatite precursors. Clinically, these would produce a cement that is bactericidal and have the potential to improve tissue healing. The improved radiopacity and flowability would facilitate the visualization of the material in the radiograph and the filling of anatomical complexities during root canal obturation. As drawbacks, the excessive weight loss and post-setting cytotoxicity could result in clinical degradation of the cement and adjacent tissue irritation for the patient.

Abstract
Background Endodontically treated teeth with extensive loss of tooth structure lacks sufficient support for a permanent restoration. While restoring them with post and core it is important not to disrupt the apical seal. Aim Evaluation of apical leakage after immediate and delayed postspace preparation using two root canal sealers. Materials and Methods Sixty single-rooted teeth were decoronated and roots were biomechanically prepared and obturated with gutta-percha and 2 sealers: AH Plus (Group A, n = 30) and Sure-Seal root canal sealer (Group B, n = 30). Groups A and B were subdivided into A1, A2 and B1, B2. Postspace was prepared immediately for A1 and B1. For A2 and B2 post space was prepared after storage in physiologic saline for 1 week. The samples were kept in Rhodamine B dye for 72 h and then sectioned longitudinally to observe dye penetration along the root canal wall under Stereomicroscope. The dye penetration was measured linearly and the values were subjected for statistical analysis using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. Results Statistically significant difference between Group A (1.00 mm) and B (2.71 mm) was observed (P < 0.001). However, the subgroups for immediate and delayed post space preparation did not show statistically significant difference (A1 = 0.947; A2 = 1.043; B1 = 2.306 and B2 = 3.120, P < 0.001). Conclusion AH plus sealer showed lesser leakage compared to Sure-Seal Root canal sealer. The difference in leakage values was not statistically significant in delayed and immediate post space preparation groups, Time of postspace preparation has no influence on apical leakage.

Abstract
This article is a literature review aimed at presenting the general state of knowledge in manufacturing engineering and materials engineering to develop engineering materials applied for endodontic treatment as filling materials. Particular attention was paid to theoretical analyses concerning the selection of methods for developing and obturating root canals and discussing the results of experimental studies available in the literature. These activities aimed to compare the importance of the most commonly used endodontic filling materials based on gutta-percha or polymeric polyester materials, commonly known as resilon, respectively. The motivation to take up this complex, multi-faceted topic in this paper is the extent of caries, periodontal disease, and other oral diseases in 3 to 5 billion people, often affecting toothlessness and contributing to an increase in the index of disability-adjusted life years (number). Endodontics is an important element of the authors’ concept of Dentistry Sustainable Development (DSD) > 2020. The principles of qualifying patients for endodontic treatment are discussed. The introduction of rotary tools, especially manufactured from Nitinol alloy, to develop root canals and the latest thermohydraulic and condensation techniques for obturation guarantee progress in endodontics. The “Digital Twins” methodology was used, rooted in the idea of Industry 4.0 and the resulting idea of Dentistry 4.0, as well as knowledge management methods, to perform experimental research in virtual space, concerning methods of developing and obturating the root canal and assessing the tightness of fillings. Microscopic visualization methods were also used. Significant factors determining the effectiveness of endodontic obturation are the selection of the filling material and the appropriate obturation method. The generalized dendrological matrix of endodontic filling materials considers the criteria of mechanical strength influencing the potential root fracture and the quality of root canal filling. The results of the SWOT point analysis (strengths and weaknesses, opportunities, threats) were also compared. For both filling materials, the weaknesses are much less than the strengths, while the threats are slightly less than the opportunities for the gutta-percha-based material, while for resilon the opportunities are much smaller than the threats. It requires the application of an appropriate development strategy, i.e., MAXI-MAXI in the case of a filling material based on gutta-percha and MAXI-MINI in the case of resilon. Therefore, the analysis of these experimental data does not indicate the real competitiveness of resilon for the gutta-percha-based material. This material deservedly maintains its strong position as the “Gold Standard of Endodontics”.

Abstract
This paper is a literature review with additional virtual analyses of the authors’ own experimental research results. Knowledge from various areas was synergistically combined, appropriately for concurrent engineering, presenting several possible methodological approaches used in research, optimizing the selection of engineering materials and the conditions of their application with particular application in endodontics. Particular attention was paid to the theoretical aspects of filling material strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats SWOT analysis. Attention was paid to the original concepts of Sustainable Dentistry Development in conjunction with Dentistry 4.0, which includes endodontics as an important element. The dentists’ actions, among others, in conservative dentistry, along with endodontics, requires close cooperation with engineers and the enginering sciences. Methods of root canal preparation were described, together with selected tools, including those made of nitinol. Principles concerning the process of cleaning and shaping the pulp complex are presented. The importance of obturation methods, including the Thermo-Hydraulic-Condensation THC technique, and the selection of filling materials with the necessary sealants for the success of endodontic treatment are discussed. The experimental studies were carried out in vitro on human teeth removed for medical reasons, except for caries, for which two groups of 16 teeth were separated. After the root canal was prepared, it was filled with studs and pellets of a filling material based on polyester materials, which has gained the common trade name of resilon or, less frequently, RealSeal (SybronEndo) with an epiphany sealant. The teeth for the first group were obturated by cold lateral condensation. In the second case the obturation was performed using the Thermo-Hydraulic-Condensation technique using System B and Obtura III. The experimental leakage testing was done using a scanning electron microscope SEM and a light stereoscopic microscope LSM, as typical research tools used in materialography. The research results, in a confrontation with the data taken from the literature studies, do not indicate the domination of resilon in endodontics.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated and compared the effects of radiation therapy on the dislocation resistance of AH Plus and BioRoot RCS applied to dentin and the sealer-dentin interface. Materials and Methods Thirty single-rooted teeth were randomly assigned to 2 groups (n = 15 each): AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey) and BioRoot RCS (Septodont). Each group was subdivided into control and experimental groups. The experimental group was subjected to a total radiation dose of 60 Gy. The root canals of all samples were cleaned, shaped, and obturated using the single-cone technique. Dentin slices (1 mm) were sectioned from each root third for the push-out test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was done to examine the sealer-dentin interface. The failure mode was determined using stereomicroscopy. Bond strength data were analyzed by the independent t-test, 1-way analysis of variance, and the Tukey post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results Significantly lower bond strength was observed in irradiated teeth than non-irradiated teeth in the AH Plus group (p < 0.05). The BioRoot RCS group showed no significant reduction in bond strength after irradiation (p > 0.05) and showed a higher post-irradiation bond strength (209.92 ± 172.26 MPa) than the AH Plus group. SEM revealed slightly larger gap-containing regions in irradiated specimens from both groups. Conclusions The dislocation resistance of BioRoot RCS was not significantly changed by irradiation and was higher than that of AH Plus. BioRoot RCS may be the sealer of choice for root canal treatment in patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Abstract
The importance of endodontics is presented within our own concept of Dentistry Sustainable Development (DSD) consisting of three inseparable elements; i.e., Advanced Interventionist Dentistry 4.0 (AID 4.0), Global Dental Prevention (GDP), and the Dentistry Safety System (DSS) as a polemic, with the hypothesis of the need to abandon interventionist dentistry in favour of the domination of dental prevention. In view of the numerous systemic complications of caries that affect 3−5 billion people globally, endodontic treatment effectively counteracts them. Regardless of this, the prevention of oral diseases should be developed very widely, and in many countries dental care should reach the poorest sections of society. The materials and methods of clinical management in endodontic procedures are characterized. The progress in the field of filling materials and techniques for the development and obturation of root canals is presented. The endodontics market is forecast to reach USD 2.1 billion in 2026, with a CAGR of 4.1%. The most widely used and recognized material for filling root canals is gutta-percha, recognized as the “gold standard”. An alternative is a synthetic thermoplastic filler material based on polyester materials, known mainly under the trade name Resilon. There are still sceptical opinions about the need to replace gutta-percha with this synthetic material, and many dentists still believe that this material cannot compete with gutta-percha. The results of studies carried out so far do not allow for the formulation of a substantively and ethically unambiguous view that gutta-percha should be replaced with another material. There is still insufficient clinical evidence to formulate firm opinions in this regard. In essence, materials and technologies used in endodontics do not differ from other groups of materials, which justifies using material engineering methodology for their research. Therefore, a detailed methodological approach is presented to objectify the assessment of endodontic treatment. Theoretical analysis was carried out using the methods of procedural benchmarking and comparative analysis with the use of contextual matrices to virtually optimize the selection of materials, techniques for the development and obturation of root canals, and methods for assessing the effectiveness of filling, which methods are usually used, e.g., in management science, and especially in foresight research as part of knowledge management. The results of these analyses are presented in the form of appropriate context matrices. The full usefulness of the research on the effectiveness and tightness of root canal filling using scanning electron microscopy is indicated. The analysis results are a practical application of the so-called “digital twins” approach concerning the virtual comparative analysis of biomaterials used in endodontic treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate the dentinal tubule penetration and adaptation of a premixed bioceramic sealer and an epoxy-resin based sealer in the three radicular thirds. METHODS 30 wide roots, with single straight canals and totally formed apexes, were endodontically prepared and divided into two groups (n=14) according to the sealer used for root canal filling: AH-Plus (AHP) and Bio-C Sealer (BIOC). Two samples were left as controls. After the canals were filled, the samples were cut and viewed under Scanning Electron Microscopy by taking images to analyse the tubular penetration and adaptation of the sealers. The results were statistically analysed with the Shapiro Wilk, Levene and Mann-Whitney tests (P<0.05). RESULTS BIOC showed significantly higher penetration in dentinal tubules than AHP in the cervical, middle and apical thirds of the root canal (P<0.05) and better adaptation to the dentinal tubule walls. CONCLUSION Under the parameters of this study, BIOC exhibits higher penetration and better adaptation to the dentinal tubules compared to AHP.

Abstract
This study compared the cytocompatibilities of three methacrylate resin-based root canal sealers [MetaSEAL Soft (MSS), Hybrid Root SEAL (HRS), and Superbond Sealer (SBS)] in either freshly mixed or set conditions using the Kusa A1 osteoblastic cell line. The three sealers and an epoxy resin-based sealer (AH Plus; AHP) were extracted in culture medium; cell growth and osteogenic properties were analyzed. Cell adhesion on set sealers was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. The respective extents of cell growth were as follows in freshly mixed and set sealer extracts: SBS>MSS>AHP>HRS and SBS=AHP>MSS>HRS. Light irradiation of MSS and HRS increased the cell growth of set sealer extracts. Set SBS, MSS, and AHP did not alter expression of osteogenic genes or formation of mineralized nodules. Attached cells were observed only on SBS. In conclusion, the four sealers exhibited varying degrees of compatibility to osteoblasts; SBS and HRS were the most and least compatible, respectively.

Abstract
Post-treatment coronal hermetic seal of the root canal opening prevents the food or saliva which assist to achieve successful endodontic treatment. Gutta-percha is filled in the inner canal, that is, from cervical third to apical third. Gutta-percha does not provide the hermetic seal because it does not bound with dentine walls. Various new restorative materials have been developed in the last 6-7 decade but drawback related to the polymerization shrinkage of the composite resin remains a clinical problem. In general, dental composites having volumetric shrinkage of the material depends on its formulation and curing conditions. In this article, the effect of this polymerization shrinkage on the tooth structure has been studied.

Abstract
Aim: The study aimed to evaluate and compare the push-out bond strength of gutta-percha using AH plus, Endosequence BC, and Roeko seal sealer with lateral condensation and thermoplasticized obturation technique. Materials and Methods: Sixty single-rooted premolars were instrumented and samples were randomly assigned into three groups based on the sealer used (Group A-AH Plus, Group B-Endosequence BC, Group C-Roeko Seal) which were further divided into two subgroups-A1, B1, and C1 were obturated by the lateral condensation technique and A2, B2, and C2 using the thermoplasticized technique. Each sample was sectioned horizontally using a diamond disc, representing apical, middle, and coronal thirds, respectively. Root segments were then mounted on an acrylic block, and push-out bond strength of each sample was tested using the universal testing machine. Statistical Analysis: One-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, and unpaired t-test. Results: For mandibular premolar teeth with a single canal using lateral condensation technique, the highest push-out bond strength was found in the A1 group (7.30 ± 0.61 MPa) at the apical level. While using the thermoplasticized technique, the highest push-out bond strength was found in the B2 group (3.71 ± 0.81 MPa) at the apical level. Overall results showed that the lateral condensation technique showed significantly higher push-out bond strength than thermoplasticized technique (P < 0.028). Conclusions: The push-out bond strength of AH Plus sealer was higher than the Endosequence BC sealer and Roeko seal sealer. Lateral condensation technique has shown higher push-out bond strength than the thermoplasticized technique.

Abstract
The objective of root canal obturation is to achieve a fluid-tight seal. Recently, GuttaFlow bioseal (GB), a root canal sealer composed of polydimethylsiloxane, gutta-percha particles, and bioactive glass ceramics, has been developed, to enhance the sealing ability of root canal filling material. The objective of this study was to assess the sealing ability of GB using a subnanoliter-scaled fluid-flow measuring device and to compare with that of AH Plus (AH). The fluid flow in root canal-filled teeth using either gutta-percha cone (GP) with AH (GAR; n = 10) or GP with GB (GBR; n = 10) and in GP inserted in AH blocks (GA; n = 10) or GP inserted in GB blocks (GB; n = 10) was measured. In addition, fluid flow in sealer blocks of AH (A; n = 10) and GB (B; n = 10), which served as negative controls, was measured. Root canal-filled teeth using GP without any sealer (GR) acted as positive controls (n = 10). The leakage was obtained by calculating the volume of moved water by time (s), after stabilization of the fluid flow was achieved. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal–Wallis test and Mann–Whitney U-test with Bonferroni correction. A p value less than 0.00238 (0.05/21) was considered significantly different. The mean leakages (nL/s) in the groups are as follows: GAR, 0.0958 ± 0.0543; GBR, 0.0223 ± 0.0246; GA, 0.0644 ± 0.0803; GB, 0.0267 ± 0.0182; A, 0.0055 ± 0.0057; B, 0.0052 ± 0.005; and GR, 0.2892 ± 0.3018. The mean leakage in the GBR group was lower than that in the GAR group (p = 0.001), while the mean leakages in the GA and GB groups were not significantly different. GuttaFlow bioseal can be useful in single-cone obturation technique.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical properties, filling ability, and antibacterial activity of a premixed calcium silicate-based sealer to those of a powder–liquid bioceramic sealer. Ceraseal (CS) and BioRoot (BR) materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy at 7 and 14 d of immersion in distilled water. The filling ability of the two sealers as well as the water contact angle, solubility, flow, roughness, crystalline microstructure, pH, and compressive strength were also evaluated. The antibacterial activity was assessed through an agar diffusion as well as through direct tests. All the results were statistically analyzed using one-way or two-way analysis of variance tests. Statistically significant lower void percentages were observed for CS at 2 and 8 mm from the working length (WL) compared to those for the BR group, whilst no significant difference was observed at 5 mm from the WL. BR sealer showed higher alkaline pH, rougher surface, lower water contact angle values, lower flowability, and higher solubility compared to CS. BR showed globular and needle-like crystalline microstructure, whilst CS had globular and flower-like crystalline microstructure up to 72 h. No statistical difference was found for the compressive strength between the two sealers. BR and CS showed no antibacterial effect against Enterococcus faecalis after 3 h, whilst both sealers showed antibacterial capacity after 24 and 72 h. BR demonstrated higher antibacterial activity after 24 h. In conclusion, the use of bioceramic sealers may play an important role in controlling bacterial growth. Moreover, CS may have superior filling ability and lower solubility than the BioRoot sealer due to its specific chemical composition and mixing method.

Abstract
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) on bond strength of fiberglass posts in root canals obturated with different endodontic sealers. Seventy-eight mandibular premolars were obturated with three sealers (n=26): Endofill (END), AH Plus (AHP), and Endosequence BC Sealer (EBS). After preparation of the post space, two subgroups were formed according to the cementation of the posts (n=13): with EDC (EDC), and without EDC (control - CON). The specimens were submitted to a pull-out test, failure mode classification, and root canal surface evaluation by scanning electron microscopy after post displacement. Regarding the bond strength, a significant difference between the EDC and CON subgroups occurred only in the END (p=0.001). No difference was detected among the CON subgroups (p=0.339). However, among the EDC subgroups, AHP presented significantly higher values (END versus AHP: p=0.001; AHP versus EBS: p=0.016). Upon classification of failure modes, score 1 (≥ 50% of cement) was the most commonly observed, except for the END + EDC. Remains of endodontic sealers and resin cements were found in the cervical third, but without statistical difference (p=0.269), while in the middle third, difference occurred (p=0.004). In conclusion, EDC decreases bond strength when associated with END sealer, without changing the failure mode between the resin cement and fiberglass post. The best performance was observed when EDC was combined with AHP sealer.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess the resistance of roots to fracture after being root canal filled with two types of endodontic sealers; bio-ceramic based sealer (TotalFill) and epoxy-resin based sealer (AH Plus). Methods Fifty-nine single canal mandibular premolars were instrumented. Group I (n=14, negative control): root canals were left without instrumentation and unfilled, group II (n=15, positive control): root canals were instrumented only and left unfilled, group III and IV (n=15 each): root canals were instrumented and filled with either gutta-percha/TotalFill or gutta-percha/AH Plus, respectively. The resistance of the roots to fracture was measured with a universal testing machine "Instron Corp" through recording the maximum force in Newton (N) needed to fracture each root. To analyze the data Kruskal-Wallis test was utilized, followed by Dunn's Bonferroni post hoc test for multiple comparisons. The level of significance was set at 0.05 (P≤0.05). Results TotalFill group showed slightly better fracture resistance (734.62 N) than AH Plus group (728.29 N). However, no statistical significant difference was found between the two groups (P>0.05). The greatest mean fracture force was shown in the negative control group (913.915 N) with statistical significant difference between the other three groups (P<0.05). Conclusion Gutta-percha/TotalFill and gutta-percha/AH Plus did not reinforce the root canal treated teeth.

Abstract
AIM This study evaluates epoxy resin-based sealers after their final set, immersed in Endosolve-R or xylene for 1-2 minutes, for its easy removal mechanically after softening. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty Teflon molds were grouped with 20 samples in each of the three commercially available sealers, i.e., AH 26, AH Plus, and Adseal. The sealers were put in the specific molds after their manipulation as per the instructions given in the literature by the manufacturer. They were allowed to harden for 2 weeks at 37°C in 100% humidity. Two subgroups, A-Xylene and B-Endosolv-R, of 10 samples each, were formed from 20 set specimens based on solvents to which they were immersed for 1 and 2 minutes, respectively. The data obtained was subjected to the Mauchly's test one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA for analysis. RESULTS It was proved that for all the sealers immersed in solvents, there was a significant reduction in the mean Vickers hardness as the time increases. There was a significant difference in the initial hardness between the mentioned sealers with AH plus showing the highest followed by AH 26 and Adseal showing the lowest. AH Plus and Adseal sealers were softened by xylene after 2 minutes of their initial microhardness (p < 0.001); least effect was seen on AH 26. After 2 minutes, Endosolv-R softened initial microhardness of all the three sealers (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION It was concluded that Endosolv-R was more effective in softening the epoxy-based resin sealer than xylene, after 2 minutes of exposure. Abstract
Statement of the Problem The complete removal of filling material is an important step to regain access to the entire canal and facilitate the disinfection of the root canal system. Rotary nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments systems have been proposed as an effective removal technique for root canal retreatment. Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Neolix rotary system and ProTaper Universal retreatment system in the removal of gutta-percha combined with two different sealers. Materials and Method In vivo study, eighty extracted human permanent mandibular premolars were prepared using the ProTaper Universal rotary system to an apical size 30 (F3/0.06). The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups (n=20) and subsequently filled with lateral condensation of gutta-percha and two sealers: AH-26 and Sure-Seal Root. The teeth were stored for 4 weeks at 37°C and 100% humidity and then retreated by one of the following rotary systems: Neolix or ProTaper Universal retreatment system. Teeth were then grooved and monitored under a stereomicroscope with 8× magnification. The images were transferred to the computer and the amount of filling material that remained on the root canal walls was scored using AutoCAD 2017 version 1.1software. Results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance test and post hoc Tukey-HSD test (p< 0.05). Results The mean percentage of remaining gutta-percha and sealer was significantly higher in apical third in all groups (p< 0.01). Post hoc Tukey test showed that there is significantly higher residual filling material in the group filled with gutta-percha and Sure-Seal Root sealer and retreated by Neoniti rotary system compared with other groups in both coronal and middle third of the canal. Conclusion The Neoniti rotary system was as effective as ProTaper Universal retreatment system in retreatment of gutta-percha and AH-26 sealer but was significantly less effective in groups obturated with Sure-Seal Root sealer.

Abstract
Background. This in vitro study compared the fracture resistance of roots instrumented either with ProTaper or One Shape rotary systems and filled with one of the silicate, epoxy resin or silicone-based sealers. Methods. Sixty single-rooted extracted mandibular premolars were decoronated to a length of 13 mm and then randomly divided into two main groups (n=30) in terms of the rotary system used for preparation. Group 1 samples were instrumented with the ProTaper Universal system up to a master apical file of #F2, while samples in group 2 were enlarged with One Shape system. The two main groups were then divided into 3 subgroups in terms of the sealer used (n=10) and filled with guttapercha (either F2 or MM-GP points) of the rotary system used and one of the sealers as follows: group 1, BioRoot RCS + ProTaper F2 gutta-percha; group 2, AH Plus + ProTaper F2 gutta-percha; group 3, GuttaFlow + ProTaper F2 gutta-percha; group 4, BioRoot RCS+ MM-GP points; group 5, AH Plus + MM-GP points; and group 6, GuttaFlow + MM-GP points. Each specimen then underwent fracture testing by using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min until the root fractured. Data were statistically analyzed. Results. Two-way ANOVA showed no significant differences between the groups. One Shape instruments showed significantly better fracture resistance compared to ProTaper instruments. Statistically, no significant difference was found between AHPlus, GuttaFlow and BioRoot RCS sealers. Conclusion. It can be concluded that the rotary system used for the instrumentation of teeth has some influence on the fracture resistance, while the root canal sealers do not have such an effect.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this experiment was to assess the push out bond strength of Polydimethylsiloxane sealers (GuttaFlow 2 and GuttaFlow Bioseal by Colte’ne/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland). AH Plus (Dentsply, DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) was used as a reference material for comparison. Methods Thirty root slices were prepared from the middle third of 10 mandibular premolars. Each slice was 1 ± 0.1 mm thick. Three holes, 0.8 mm wide each, were drilled on the axial side of each root slice. These holes were subjected to standardized irrigations and then dried using paper points. Finally, for each root slice, each hole was filled with exactly one of the following three root canal sealers: AH Plus, GuttaFlow 2 and GuttaFlow Bioseal. After all the holes were filled in that way, the root slices were stored on top of phosphate-buffered saline solution (pH 7.2) soaked gauze for 7 days at the temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. Then, for each root canal sealer on a root slice, the universal testing machine was used to measure the push out bond strength. The differences in push out bond strengths between the three sealer samples were assessed using the Friedman test, while the paired comparisons were assessed using Wilcoxon signed rank test with Bonferroni correction. All statistical tests were two-tailed and the significance level was set at the 5%. Results According to the Friedman test the distributions of push out bond strengths of AH Plus, GuttaFlow 2 and GuttaFlow Bioseal were different (P < 0.05). Paired comparisons indicated that AH Plus had a significantly superior push out bond strength than GuttaFlow 2 and GuttaFlow Bioseal, while the push out bond strength of GuttaFlow Bioseal was significantly stronger than that of GuttaFlow 2 (P < 0.01). Conclusions Based on these findings, AH Plus is a better root canal sealer than GuttaFlow 2 and GuttaFlow Bioseal.

Abstract
Purpose: The reinforcement effect of 3 various root canal sealers (AH 26, MTA Plus sealer and BioRoot RCS) and gutta-percha at different time periods (1 week and 1 month) were evaluated in the present study. Materials and methods: Single-rooted, single-canalled, cracks-free 80 mandibular premolars were decoronated to a length of 13mm. Group PC (positive control, n=10): samples were left unprepared and unfilled. Seventy samples were prepared by using the ProTaper Rotary System up to F4. Group NC (negative control, n=10): samples were left unfilled. Remaining 60 samples were assigned into 3 groups; Group 1: AH 26 + F4 gutta-percha (GP); Group 2: MTA Plus sealer + F4 GP and Group 3: BioRoot RCS + F4 GP. Filled samples were divided into subgroups according to storage time: Samples in Groups 1A, 2A, and 3A were stored for 1 week; while Groups 1B, 2B and 3B were stored for 1 month at 100% humidity to allow the complete setting of the sealers (n=10, for each). A universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min was used for fracture testing. For each specimen, the force at the time of fracture was recorded and the data were analyzed statistically. Results: The highest fracture resistance values were obtained in Group PC, while the lowest values were obtained in Group NC. Groups PC and NC were statistically different from each other and from other groups, regardless of time (p<0.05). Fracture resistance values of Group AH 26/GP were statistically different from MTA Plus sealer/GP (p<0.05) and were statistically similar with BioRoot RCS/GP , irrespective of time. Within group comparisons revealed that there were no statistically differences between samples filled with same sealer at different time periods. Conclusion: Root canal preparation caused decreased fracture resistance. All sealers increased the force values needed to fracture the filled samples compared to unfilled ones. Time factor had no effect on the fracture resistance values.
