Abstract
Placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia can profoundly alter pain perception, offering critical implications for pain management. While animal models are increasingly used to explore the underlying mechanisms of these phenomena, it remains unclear whether animals experience placebo and nocebo effects in a manner comparable to humans or whether the associated neurobiological pathways are conserved across species. In this study, we introduce a novel framework for comparing brain activity between humans and rodents during placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia. Using c-Fos immunohistochemistry in rats and fMRI in humans, we examined neural activity in 70 pain-related brain regions, identifying both conserved and species-specific connectivity changes. Functional connectivity analysis, refined by pruning connections based on known anatomical pathways, revealed significant overlap in key regions, including the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex, and nucleus accumbens, highlighting conserved circuits driving placebo and nocebo responses. This cross-species methodology offers a powerful new approach for investigating the neurobiology of pain modulation, bridging the gap between animal models and human studies. Identifying these common connections validates the use of animal models and enables preclinical researchers to focus on circuits that are conserved across species, ensuring greater translational relevance when developing new and effective treatments for pain conditions.

Abstract
Socioeconomic Position (SEP) is a multidimensional construct encompassing education, income, occupation, and neighborhood distress, influencing chronic pain severity, interference, and duration. However, its impact on placebo analgesia, where reduced pain perception occurs due to treatment belief, remains understudied. Using a quasi-experimental approach, we investigated SEP's influence on placebo analgesia in 401 participants with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and 400 pain-free individuals. Using latent class analysis, we grouped participants into two SEP groups based on self-reported education, income, occupation, and neighborhood distress indices, including the area deprivation and distressed community indexes. Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs) and self-reported race were included to account for genetic and demographic influences. Placebo analgesia was elicited using verbal suggestion and classical conditioning. Linear mixed models were employed to analyze SEP's impact, while multiple regression and ANCOVA assessed AIMs' and race's effects. Comparable placebo effects were observed between participants with TMD and pain-free individuals (F(1,4765.73) = 0.49, p = 0.48). A trend was noted in the main effect of SEP (F(1,4764.5) = 3.64, p = 0.056). Among TMD participants, those with distressed SEP exhibited lower placebo analgesia (F(1,4765.73) = 7.9, p = 0.005), while placebo response did not differ by SEP in pain-free participants (F(1,4765.73) = 0.27, p = 0.59). East Asian ancestry (β = 5.71, 95% CI [1.50, 9.92]) and self-reported Asian (mean = 24.20, sem = 1.52, p = 0.020) were associated with greater placebo analgesia. This study highlights the interplay of SEP, AIMs, and race in placebo analgesia and calls for tailored pain management interventions. PERSPECTIVE: SEP significantly contributes to pain disparities. This quasi-experimental study demonstrates analogous placebo analgesia between chronic pain and pain-free individuals but finds lower placebo analgesia only among individuals with chronic pain and distressed SEP. This highlights a link between chronic pain, SEP, and impaired placebo effects, suggesting new avenues for research.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic pelvic pain affects up to 24% of women worldwide and for up to 55% of these there is no associated pathology. Despite this there are no established treatments in this cohort. This is a secondary analysis of a randomised-controlled trial (GaPP2) to explore if there are measures which enable us to predict treatment outcome. Methods GaPP2 recruited women with chronic pelvic pain and no identified pathology and compared the response to gabapentin and placebo. This analysis used variables collected at baseline including validated questionnaires. Binary logistic regression was used to create models to explore whether baseline variables predicted treatment response. Treatment response was determined using 30% reduction in average pain intensity, 30% reduction in worst pain intensity and the Patient Global Impression of Change ('marked' or 'very marked' improvement) individually. We also explored whether baseline variables predicted the occurrence of side-effects (dizziness, visual disturbances and drowsiness). Results Using the Patient Global Impression of Change questionnaire, we found a significant binary logistic regression (p = 0.029, explaining 31% of the variance), with those with lower worst pain intensity (odds ratio (OR) of 0.393, 95% CI [0.217, 0.712]), lower bladder symptom score (OR = 0.788, CI [0.628, 0.989]), and higher mental component quality of life score (OR = 0.911, CI [0.840, 0.988]), more likely to have 'marked' or 'very marked' improvement when treated with gabapentin. We could not identify predictors of experiencing side-effects to gabapentin. However, we did find predictors of these in the placebo group (binary logistic regression (p = 0.009) and explained 33% of the variance). Worse mental health (OR = 1.247, CI [1.019, 1.525]) and lower baseline pain interference (OR = 0.687, CI [0.483, 0.978]) were associated with having side effects, whilst the use of hormones reduced the risk of experiencing side effects (OR = 0.239, CI [0.084, 0.676]). Discussion Researchers and clinicians are increasingly aware of the importance of personalised medicine and treatment decisions being driven by knowledge of what treatments work for whom. Our data suggests an important role of the Patient Global Impression of Change in clinical trials as it may better reflect balance between symptoms reduction and side-effects and therefore be more useful in clinician-patients joint decision making.

Abstract
Pain is an interpersonal and inherently social experience. Pain perception and administration of medical treatment all occur in a particular environmental and social context. Early environmental influences and early learning experiences and interactions condition the body's response to different threats (like pain), ultimately shaping the underlying neurophysiology. These early interactions and experiences also determine what situations are perceived as threatening, as well as our belief in our own ability to self-manage, and our belief in others to offer support, during perceived threats. These beliefs intrinsically drive the combination of behaviors that emerge in response to perceived threats, including pain. Such behaviors can be categorized into attachment styles. In this interdisciplinary review, we synthesize and summarize evidence from the neurobiological, psychobiological, psychosocial, and psychobehavioral fields, to describe how these beliefs are embedded in the brain's prediction models to generate a series of expectations/perceptions around the level of safety/threat in different contexts. As such, these beliefs may predict how one experiences and responds to pain, with potentially significant implications for the development and management of chronic pain. Little attention has been directed to the effect of adult attachment style on pain in research studies and in the clinical setting. Using interdisciplinary evidence, we argue why we think this interaction merits further consideration and research. PERSPECTIVE: This review explores the influence of attachment styles on pain perception, suggesting a link between social connections and chronic pain development. It aligns with recent calls to emphasize the social context in pain research and advocates for increased focus on adult attachment styles in research and clinical practice.

Abstract
Drug treatments for pain often do not outperform placebo, and a better understanding of placebo mechanisms is needed to improve treatment development and clinical practice. In a large-scale fMRI study (N = 392) with pre-registered analyses, we tested whether placebo analgesic treatment modulates nociceptive processes, and whether its effects generalize from conditioned to unconditioned pain modalities. Placebo treatment caused robust analgesia in conditioned thermal pain that generalized to unconditioned mechanical pain. However, placebo did not decrease pain-related fMRI activity in brain measures linked to nociceptive pain, including the Neurologic Pain Signature (NPS) and spinothalamic pathway regions, with strong support for null effects in Bayes Factor analyses. In addition, surprisingly, placebo increased activity in some spinothalamic regions for unconditioned mechanical pain. In contrast, placebo reduced activity in a neuromarker associated with higher-level contributions to pain, the Stimulus Intensity Independent Pain Signature (SIIPS), and affected activity in brain regions related to motivation and value, in both pain modalities. Individual differences in behavioral analgesia were correlated with neural changes in both modalities. Our results indicate that cognitive and affective processes primarily drive placebo analgesia, and show the potential of neuromarkers for separating treatment influences on nociception from influences on evaluative processes.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the influence of potential placebo and nocebo effects on pain perception of percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) in individuals with patellar tendinopathy. Methods In this secondary analysis of a three-arm randomized double-blinded controlled trial, intra and inter-session pain perception data from 48 sporting participants with patellar tendinopathy between 18 and 45 years were investigated. Participants were divided into 3 parallel groups: "no-sham group" [PNE intervention], "single-sham group" [sham PNE by using dry needling], and "double-sham group" [sham PNE by using sham needles]. Every group received 4 sessions of the needling therapies targeting the patellar tendon over 8 weeks and was instructed to perform a unilateral eccentric exercise program of the quadriceps muscle on the affected side. Clinical and needle-related pain was assessed before, during, and after each treatment session using a visual analog scale. Results No differences were found between groups intra- or inter-session in terms of pain reduction (P = 0.424) despite clinical pain decreased in all groups since the first treatment session (P < 0.001). Furthermore, although the double-sham group showed a lower percentage of participants reporting needle-related pain during needle intervention (P = 0.005), the needle-related pain intensity after needle intervention was similar between groups (P = 0.682). Moreover, there were no group differences for the duration of pain sensation after any needle intervention (P = 0.184), extending in many cases beyond 24 h. Conclusion Needling therapies for individuals with patellar tendinopathy are prone to elicit placebo effects regarding clinical pain and nocebo effects regarding needling-related pain. Clinicians and physical therapists treating musculoskeletal pain conditions should consider the added value and potential mechanisms of action before routinely using needle techniques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to synthesize the evidence from randomized clinical trials in people with nontraumatic degenerative meniscal pathology by comparing physical therapist interventions versus or combined with arthroscopic partial meniscectomy (APM). METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. Data synthesis was performed with random-effects network meta-analysis, and results were summarized using the standardized mean differences. RESULTS From 2103 studies, 10 randomized clinical trials comprising 1411 individuals were included. Ninety percent of the selected randomized clinical trials were classified as good quality according to the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. All interventions (physical therapist interventions, APM, and APM plus physical therapist interventions) showed reduced pain and physical impairments at 3-month follow-up. However, when a physical therapist intervention was included, greater reductions in pain at rest (APM vs physical therapist interventions: 0.73 [95% CI = 0.20 to 1.26]; APM vs APM plus physical therapist interventions: 0.59 [95% CI = 0.15 to 1.03]) and greater increases in the strength of knee extensor muscles (APM vs physical therapist interventions: 0.44 [95% CI = 0.07 to 0.80]; APM vs APM plus physical therapist interventions: 0.73 [95% CI = 0.29 to 1.16]) were observed at 3 months. By contrast, no differences were found between treatments beyond 3 months. CONCLUSION Physical therapist interventions based on exercise programs demonstrate superior short-term outcomes in pain reduction and knee extensor strength compared to surgical treatment. IMPACT For nontraumatic degenerative meniscal pathology, conservative treatment utilizing a physical therapist intervention approach should be prioritized as the first choice over surgical treatment. It offers comparable or superior short-term pain reduction and strength improvements, with a lower risk of side effects. In cases where surgery is deemed necessary, including postsurgical, physical therapist interventions are highly recommended to enhance muscle strength and alleviate pain.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterised by chronic pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and masticatory muscles. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as a potential non-invasive treatment for chronic pain; however, its effectiveness in individuals with TMD has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate and sustained (over seven consecutive days) effects of a single session of active rTMS compared to sham stimulation on pain intensity and pain unpleasantness in individuals with TMD. METHODS A randomised, double-blind, sham-controlled trial enrolled 41 female participants with chronic TMD. Pain intensity and pain unpleasantness were assessed immediately pre- and post-intervention, as well as twice daily for 21 days using electronic diaries. Secondary outcomes included pain interference, sleep quality, positive and negative affect and pain catastrophizing. Adverse effects were monitored. Repeated measures ANOVA and multilevel modelling regression analyses were employed for data analysis. RESULT Active rTMS demonstrated a significant immediate mild reduction in pain intensity and pain unpleasantness compared to sham stimulation. However, these effects were not sustained over the 7-day post-intervention period. No significant differences were observed between interventions for pain interference, sleep quality and negative affect. A minority of participants reported minor and transient side effects, including headaches and fatigue. CONCLUSION A single session of active rTMS was safe and led to immediate mild analgesic effects in individuals with TMD compared to sham stimulation. However, no significant differences were observed between interventions over the 7-day post-intervention period. Based on this study, rTMS stimulation appears to be a promising safe approach to be tested in TMD patients with longer stimulation protocols.

Abstract
Lack of good sleep or insomnia can lead to many health issues, including an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity, fatigue, low mood, and pain. While chronic pain negatively impacts sleep quality, the relationship between descending pain modulatory systems like placebo effects and sleep quality is not thoroughly known. We addressed this aspect in a cross-sectional study in participants with chronic pain. Placebo effects were elicited in a laboratory setting using thermal heat stimulations delivered with visual cues using classical conditioning and verbal suggestions. We estimated the levels of insomnia severity with the Insomnia Severity Index and the sleep quality with the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index. The previous night's sleep continuity was assessed as total sleep time, sleep efficiency, and sleep midpoint the night before the experiment. 277 people with chronic pain and 189 pain-free control individuals participated. Participants with chronic pain and insomnia showed smaller placebo effects than those with chronic pain without insomnia. Similarly, poor sleep quality was associated with reduced placebo effects among participants with chronic pain. Clinical anxiety measured by Depression Anxiety Stress Scales partially mediated these effects. In contrast, placebo effects were not influenced by the presence of insomnia or poor sleep quality in pain-free participants. Sleep continuity the night before the experiment did not influence the placebo effects. Our results indicate that participants who experience insomnia and/or poor sleep quality and chronic pain have smaller placebo effects, and that the previous night sleep continuity does not influence the magnitude of placebo effects. PERSPECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between sleep disturbances and experimentally induced placebo effects. We found that individuals with chronic pain who experience insomnia and poor sleep quality demonstrated reduced placebo effects compared to their counterparts with good sleep quality and no insomnia.

Abstract
Adverse nocebo responses can cause harm to patients and interfere with treatment adherence and effects in both clinic practice and clinical trials. Nocebo responses refer to negative outcomes to active medical treatments in clinical trials or practice that cannot be explained by the treatment's pharmacologic effects. Negative expectancies and nocebo effects are less known than placebo responses. Nocebo effects can be triggered by verbal suggestions, prior negative experiences, observation of others experiencing negative outcomes, and other contextual and environmental factors. As research advances over the years, mechanistic knowledge is accumulating on the neurobiological mechanisms of nocebo effects. This review summarizes studies on different facets of nocebo effects and responses and discusses clinical implications, ethical considerations, and future directions.

Abstract
Objective: Since placebo and nocebo-responses during acupuncture therapy are rarely studied in clinical contexts, the objective was to investigate placebo and nocebo-responses in a clinical context through comparing positive and negative side-effects between genuine and sham acupuncture, and to identify factors modifying placebo and nocebo-responses. Methods: Patients reported positive side-effects (non-intended positive effects) or negative side-effects (non-intended negative effects) of genuine (penetrating; n = 109) or sham (telescopic non-penetrating; n = 106) acupuncture during 5 weeks of chemoradiation for cancer. Results: The genuine and the sham acupuncture group reported rather similar frequencies of positive (P-values .223-.800) or negative (P-values .072-1.0) side-effects: relaxation 59%/57% of the patients, improved mood 46%/38%, improved sleep 38%/38%, pain-reduction 36%/28%, tiredness 42%/42%, feeling cold 37%/31%, sweating 23%/21%, and dizziness 20%/12%. Positive side-effects occurred in 79% of patients who highly believed acupuncture to be effective, compared to in 0% of patients who did not believe. Other factors associated with placebo-response were female sex (P = .042), anxious mood (P = .007), depressed mood (P = .018), and blinding-success (P = .033). Factors associated with nocebo response were female sex (P = .049), younger age (P = .010), and needle-induced pain (P = .014). Sham-treated patients experiencing positive side-effects experienced better quality of life at the end of the treatment period (mean, m 64 on a scale 0-100 millimetres, Standard Deviation, SD, ±26.1 mm) than those who did not (m 48 ± 25.5 mm), P = .048 (adjusted for other characteristics). Conclusions: Clinically significant levels of placebo and nocebo effects commonly occurred during acupuncture therapy in integrative cancer care and this paper identified factors modifying these responses. This implicates that acupuncture-delivering therapists striving to maximize placebo-responses and minimize nocebo-responses may considering strengthen the patient's treatment expectations, and offer a pleasant, pain-free, acupuncture treatment.

Abstract
This study investigated for the first time the effects of individual and combined application of 3 learning techniques (verbal suggestions, classical conditioning, and observational learning) on placebo analgesia and extinction. Healthy participants (N = 206) were assigned to 8 different groups in which they were taught through either a verbal suggestion, a conditioning paradigm, a video observing someone, or any combination thereof that a placebo device (inactive transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation [TENS]) was capable of alleviating heat pain, whereas one group did not (control). Placebo analgesia was quantified as the within-group difference in experienced pain when the placebo device was (sham) 'activated' or 'inactivated' during equal pain stimuli, and compared between groups. Placebo analgesia was induced in groups with 2 or 3 learning techniques. Significantly stronger placebo analgesia was induced in the combination of all 3 learning techniques as compared to the individual learning techniques or control condition, underlining the additional contribution of 3 combined techniques. Extinction did not differ between groups. Furthermore, pain expectancies, but not state anxiety or trust, mediated placebo analgesia. Our findings emphasize the added value of combining 3 learning techniques to optimally shape expectancies that lead to placebo analgesia, which can be used in experimental and clinical settings. PERSPECTIVE: This unique experimental study compared the individual versus combined effects of 3 important ways of learning (verbal suggestions, classical conditioning, and observational learning) on expectation-based pain relief. The findings indicate that placebo effects occurring in clinical practice could be optimally strengthened if healthcare providers apply these techniques in combination.

Abstract
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis worldwide, affecting ~500 million people, yet there are no effective treatments to halt its progression. Without any structure-modifying agents, management of OA focuses on ameliorating pain and improving function. Treatment approaches typically have modest efficacy, and many patients have contraindications to recommended pharmacological treatments. Drug development for OA is hindered by the gradual and progressive nature of the disease and the targeting of established disease in clinical trials. Additionally, new medications for OA cannot receive regulatory approval without demonstrating improvements in both structure (pathological features of OA) and symptoms (reduced pain and/or improved function). In clinical trials, people with OA show high 'placebo responses', which hamper the ability to identify new effective treatments. Placebo responses refer to the individual variability in response to placebos given in the context of clinical trials and other settings. Placebo effects refer specifically to short-lasting improvements in symptoms that occur because of physiological changes. To mitigate the effects of the placebo phenomenon, we must first understand what it is, how it manifests, how to identify placebo responders in OA trials and how these insights can be used to improve clinical trials in OA. Leveraging placebo responses and effects in clinical practice might provide additional avenues to augment symptom management of OA.

Abstract
Background 'Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs)' denote an umbrella term that includes arthritic, musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions involving the temporomandibular joint, the masticatory muscles, and the associated tissues. Occlusal devices are one of the common treatment modalities utilized in the conservative management of TMDs. The indications for the available 'oral splints' or 'oral orthotic occlusal devices' remain ambiguous. Methods A joint international consortium was formulated involving the subject experts at TMJ Foundation, to resolve the current ambiguity regarding the use of oral orthotic occlusal appliance therapy for the temporomandibular joint disorders based on the current scientific and clinical evidence. Results The recommendations and the conclusion of the clinical experts of the joint international consort has been summarized for understanding the indications of the various available oral orthotic occlusal appliances and to aid in the future research on oral occlusal orthotics. Conclusion The use of the oral orthotic occlusal appliances should be based on the current available scientific evidence, rather than the archaic protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches (CIHA), including but not limited to, natural products and Mind and Body Practices (MBPs), are promising non-pharmacological adjuvants to the arsenal of pain management therapeutics. We aim to establish possible relationships between use of CIHA and the capacity of descending pain modulatory system in the form of occurrence and magnitude of placebo effects in a laboratory setting. METHODS This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between self-reported use of CIHA, pain disability, and experimentally induced placebo hypoalgesia in chronic pain participants suffering from Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD). In the 361 enrolled TMD participants, placebo hypoalgesia was measured using a well-established paradigm with verbal suggestions and conditioning cues paired with distinct heat painful stimulations. Pain disability was measured with the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, and use of CIHA were recorded with a checklist as part of the medical history. RESULTS Use of physically oriented MBPs (e.g., yoga and massage) was associated with reduced placebo effects (F1,2110.44 = 23.15, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.171). Further, linear regressions indicated that greater number of physically oriented MBPs predicted smaller placebo effects (β = -0.17, p = 0.002), and less likelihood of being a placebo responder (OR = 0.70, p = 0.004). Use of psychologically oriented MBPs and natural product were not associated with placebo effects magnitude and responsiveness. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that use of physically oriented CIHA was associated with experimental placebo effects possibly through an optimized capability to recognize distinct somatosensorial stimulations. Future research is needed to understand the mechanisms underlying placebo-induced pain modulation in CIHA users. SIGNIFICANCE Chronic pain participants who use physically oriented mind-body practices, such as yoga and massage, demonstrated attenuated experimentally induced placebo hypoalgesia in comparison with those who do not use them. This finding disentangled the relationship between use of complementary and integrative approaches and placebo effects, providing the potential therapeutic perspective of endogenous pain modulation in chronic pain management.

BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) symptoms develop into chronic pain for some patients, but the reasons for this are unclear. Psychosocial factors and chronic overlapping pain conditions are believed to contribute to the development of pain-related disability. We examined the role of jaw function, negative and positive psychological factors and chronic overlapping pain conditions (COPCs) on pain-related disability whilst controlling for demographic variables. METHODS We collected demographics, medical and psychosocial history and the Graded Chronic Pain Scale, a measure of pain intensity and pain interference from 400 participants with chronic TMD. Structural equation modelling was used to assess a model of COPCs and the latent variables of psychological unease (pain catastrophizing, somatic symptoms and negative affect), positive valence factors (optimism and positive affect), jaw function (chewing, opening and expression limitation) and pain-related disability (pain intensity and pain interference) whilst controlling for demographic variables. RESULTS We achieved good fit of a parsimonious model (root-mean-square error of approximation = 0.063 [90% CI] [0.051-0.075]), comparative fit index = 0.942, standard root-mean-square residual = 0.067. Jaw function was the strongest latent variable predictor, followed by psychological unease and COPCs suggesting resources focused on improving joint function, psychosocial support and management of COPCs will improve pain-related disability in TMDs. CONCLUSIONS These findings not only increase the body of knowledge related to TMD clinical phenotypes but also, have a translational impact in further supporting the potential value of targeting physical therapy such as jaw exercise along with psychological interventions as multidisciplinary nonpharmacological therapeutic solutions.

Abstract
Placebo and nocebo effects are salubrious benefits and negative outcomes attributable to non-specific symbolic components. Leveraging advanced experimental and analytical approaches, recent studies have elucidated complicated neural mechanisms that may serve as a solid basis for harnessing the powerful self-healing and self-harming capacities and applying these findings to improve medical practice and minimize the unintended exacerbation of symptoms in medical practice. We review advances in employing psychosocial, pharmacological, and neuromodulation approaches to modulate/harness placebo and nocebo effects. While these approaches show promising potential, translating these research findings into clinical settings still requires careful methodological, technical, and ethical considerations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nocebo and placebo effects, i.e., adverse or beneficial treatment effects, respectively, putatively due to expectancies can modulate pain and itch. These effects can generalize within the pain or itch modality. Predicting the induction and generalization of these effects can be helpful in clinical practice. This study aims to investigate whether psychological characteristics related to the fear-avoidance model predict the induction and generalization of nocebo and placebo effects on pain and itch in young healthy participants. METHODS Data from two previous experiments were analyzed. In Experiment 1, we induced nocebo and placebo effects on heat pain and tested generalization to pressure pain and to cowhage-evoked itch (n = 33 in a nocebo group, n = 32 in a placebo group). In Experiment 2, we induced nocebo effects on cowhage-evoked itch and tested generalization to mechanical itch and to mechanical touch (n = 44). Potential predictors were anxiety- and stress symptoms, attention to pain/itch, and pain/itch catastrophizing. Multiple regression analyses were performed. RESULTS For nocebo effects, none of the individual psychological characteristics significantly predicted induction of nocebo effects nor their generalization. For placebo effects, only less stress symptoms, lower attention to pain, and higher pain catastrophizing weakly predicted a stronger generalization of placebo effects from heat pain to pressure pain. CONCLUSION The tested psychological characteristics may not play an important role in the induction and generalization of nocebo and placebo effects in healthy individuals. However, firm conclusions cannot be drawn with the current sample. Future studies should validate findings in larger and more diverse samples.
