Abstract
Menopause, through attributable estrogen level decline and the corresponding increase in circulating androgens, significantly elevates a woman's risk for cardiometabolic diseases, including metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Metabolic syndrome itself is a cluster of interconnected risk factors, and among them, central obesity is a well-established factor for the development of endometrial cancer (EC), the most common gynecologic malignancy. This research investigates the impact of metabolic syndrome on survival rates among patients with endometrial cancer. The goal is to assess whether having metabolic syndrome or its individual components influences disease-free survival (DFS), overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival, and recurrence rates. Understanding this link is crucial for determining risk levels and could help tailor treatment approaches for better long-term outcomes in endometrial cancer care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a prevalent health condition in Taiwan that places individuals at higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. Therefore, the identification of risk factors associated with MetS is crucial. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of uric acid and MetS in a Taiwanese community with a middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled residents aged 50-90 years living in one community. All of the subjects received a standardized personal interview, including a structured questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and blood samples were collected for laboratory testing. MetS was defined as excess waist circumference, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high serum triglycerides, and low serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate uric acid tertiles associated with MetS. RESULTS A total of 400 subjects were enrolled in the analysis. The overall prevalence of MetS was 35.8%. The prevalence of MetS increased gradually with increasing serum uric acid levels (p value < 0.001). A significant association between uric acid and cardiometabolic risk factors was confirmed, with a Pearson's correlation coefficient for waist circumference of 0.30 (p < 0.001), a coefficient for systolic blood pressure of 0.13 (p = 0.01), a coefficient for triglycerides of 0.33 (p < 0.001), and a coefficient for high-density lipoprotein of -0.30 (p < 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of the high uric acid tertile level for MetS was 2.48 (95% CI = 1.31-4.71, p = 0.01). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for uric acid in predicting MetS was 0.621 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of MetS in our study population is high. High serum uric acid levels are independently associated with the presence of MetS among the middle-aged and elderly Taiwanese population.

Abstract
AIMS We aim to explore the cumulative predictive value of elevated serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and visceral fat area (VFA) for metabolic syndrome (MS) development in postmenopausal women. METHODS A total of 1006 postmenopausal females were enrolled in a 10-year prospective longitudinal study from 2011 to 2021 in the community of Banknote Printing Company of Chengdu. The sociodemographic information collection and anthropometric measurements were made by a professional nurse. Fasting blood samples were drawn for chemical analysis of fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and TSH. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to measure VFA. All the participants were categorized into four groups according to median VFA and serum level of TSH. RESULTS A total of 793 postmenopausal females without MS underwent a 10-year follow-up study grouping by TSH and VFA: Group 1 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 2 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA < 70 cm2 ), Group 3 (TSH level <4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ) and Group 4 (TSH level ≥4.2 μIU/mL, and VFA ≥70 cm2 ). During the 10-year follow-up, MS was newly developed in 326 (41.1%) subjects. The incidence of MS was 29.8% (n = 53), 35.2% (n = 63), 41% (n = 87), and 55% (n = 123) from Group 1 to Group 4 (Group 4 vs other groups, p < .001). Cox regression analysis for MS prediction demonstrated that both TSH (Model 3, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.07 [95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.09]) and VFA (Model 4, HR = 1.02 [95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.08]) were not only independent predictors of MS but also involved some interaction between each other (p for interaction = .021). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that mutual interaction between higher TSH and VFA contributed to the development of MS. Further studies are needed to clarify these contributions.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) consists of a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors and is an important determining factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). We intended to use latent class analysis to classify the study population into several clusters. Methods The baseline information of 6,814 participants of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) aged 45-84 years in 2000-2002 was used. The latent class analysis was conducted to extract different patterns of components. SAS 9.2 and Stata 12 software were used for analysis. Results The components of MetS tend to accumulate, hence it would be feasible to categorize the population into three classes: [1] Non-Metabolic Syndrome Latent Class (NonMetS-LC), [2] Low Risk Latent Class (LowR-LC), and [3] Metabolic Syndrome Latent Class (MetS-LC). In women, adding high-density lipoprotein (HDL) component to the two-component combinations of NonMetS-LC will transfer the individual to MetS-LC, and it was found in 100% of combinations of MetS-LC. However, in men, blood pressure (BP) played such a similar role, which was found in 97.36% of combinations of MetS-LC. Conclusion Results showed that clinical value of each MetS component is different by gender. The main component in men was elevated BP; while low HDL and elevated fasting blood sugar (FBS) were in next ranks. However, the main component in women was low HDL; while elevated BP and FBS were in next ranks. Special attention should be paid to BP and HDL components, because these can be useful for clinicians and health policy-makers in diagnosis and screening. In conclusion, this study showed that revisions might be needed for the MetS definitions. Graphical abstract

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the effects of overweight/obesity on mortality and morbidity outcomes and the disparities, time trends, and projected future obesity health burden in China. METHODS Cohort studies that were conducted in China and published in English or Chinese between January 1, 1995, and July 31, 2021, were systematically searched. This study focused on overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, cancers, and chronic kidney disease. RESULTS A total of 31 cohorts and 50 cohort studies reporting on mortality (n = 20) and morbidities (n = 30) associated with obesity met study inclusion criteria. Overall, BMI was nonlinearly (U-shaped) associated with all-cause mortality and linearly associated with risks of T2DM, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, cancer, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. In 2018, among adults, the prevalence of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and T2DM was 51.2%, 27.5%, and 12.4%, respectively. Their future projected prevalence would be 70.5%, 35.4%, and 18.5% in 2030, respectively. The projected number of adults having these conditions would be 810.65 million, 416.47 million, and 217.64 million, respectively. The urban-rural disparity in overweight/obesity prevalence was projected to shrink and then reverse over time. CONCLUSIONS The current health burden of obesity in China is high and it will sharply increase in coming years and affect population groups differently. China needs to implement vigorous interventions for obesity prevention and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to investigate the association between household exposure to biomass fuel and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components including blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and waist circumference among females in southern rural China. METHODS We surveyed 1664 residents in the Chronic Disease and Risk Factors Surveillance, conducted in 14 districts of Guangdong province. We recorded the use of biomass fuel, MetS and its components, and other covariates by using a structured questionnaire. Logistic regression model and multivariate linear regression model were adopted for analysis. RESULTS Exposure to biomass fuel was significantly associated with an increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP) (β: 2.15, 95% confidence interval: 0.13 to 4.17) and FBG (β: 0.19, 95% confidence interval: 0.01 to 0.37) in the adjusted and unadjusted models (all P < 0.05). Among participants with exposure to biomass fuel, being overweight or obese was associated with an increased risk of having hypertension (odds ratio: 3.19, 95% confidence interval: 2.13 to 4.76) and higher FBG levels (odds ratio: 2.10, 95% confidence interval: 1.46 to 3.02). Exposure to biomass fuel was significantly associated with a decrease of the prevalence of central obesity (P < 0.05). However, exposure to biomass fuel was not associated with MetS, diastolic blood pressure and TG (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Exposure to biomass fuel is associated with an increase in blood pressure and FBG levels, but not MetS per se. Efforts should be made to protect females in southern rural China from the adverse effects associated with biomass fuel pollution.

Abstract
Deeply involved with dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease has becoming the leading cause of mortality since the early twentieth century in the modern world. Whose correlation with metabolic syndrome (MetS), hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been well established. We conducted a 9-year longitudinal study to identify the association between easily measured lipid parameters, future MetS, hypertension and T2DM by gender and age distribution. Divided into three groups by age (young age: < 40, middle age: ≥ 40 and < 65 and old age: ≥ 65), 7670 participants, receiving standard medical inspection at Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH) in Taiwan, had been enrolled in this study. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) was a logarithmically transformed ratio of triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Through multivariate regression analyses, the hazard ratio (HR) of AIP for MetS, hypertension and T2DM were illustrated. AIP revealed significant association with all the aforementioned diseases through the entire three models for both genders. Additionally, AIP revealed significant correlation which remained still after fully adjustment in MetS, hypertension, and T2DM groups for subjects aged 40–64-year-old. Nevertheless, for participants aged above 65-year-old, AIP only demonstrated significant association in MetS group. Our results explore the promising value of AIP to determine the high-risk subjects, especially meddle-aged ones, having MetS, hypertension, and T2DM in the present and the future.

Abstract
Objective: Metabolic diseases have been a clinical challenge worldwide and a major public health issue. Very few studies from China investigated the impact of metabolic multimorbidity on healthcare and health outcomes at the national level. This study aims to examine the association of metabolic multimorbidity with health service utilization, spending, functional and mental health. Materials and Methods: This is a nationally representative cross-sectional study, utilizing the data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2015, including 11,377 participants aged 45 years and older. Multivariable regression models were used to assess the association of metabolic multimorbidity with healthcare, out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE), the activities of daily living (ADL) limitation, the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) limitation, and depression. Results: Overall, 30.50% of total participants had metabolic multimorbidity in 2015 in China. Compared with single disease, metabolic multimorbidity were associated with the number of outpatient visits [incident rate ratio (IRR) = 1.30, 95% CI = 1.05, 1.62] and days of inpatient care (IRR = 1.52, 95% CI = 1.28, 1.81). Metabolic multimorbidity was positively associated with the OOPE on outpatient care (coefficient = 82.99, 95% CI = 17.70, 148.27) and physical functional difficulties, including ADL limitation (odds ratio = 1.36, 95% CI = 1.18, 1.57). Conclusions: Metabolic multimorbidity is associated with higher levels of health-care service use, greater expenditure for outpatient care, and more difficulties in ADL among Chinese adults. Abstract
OBJECTIVE extensive effort has been made to better define metabolic syndrome (MetS). Whether current definitions accurately diagnose MetS and predict risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or diabetes in diverse ethnic groups remains largely unknown. The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of MetS and risk of CVD and diabetes among Asian American adults using two MetS definitions, one proposed by the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (ATP III) and one by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). METHODS we obtained a nationally representative sample of 2121 Asian American adults in the noninstitutionalized civilian population of the United States from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2016). We computed age-adjusted, gender-specific MetS prevalence and each MetS component using ATP III and IDF definitions. RESULTS based on the IDF definition, MetS prevalence was 39.26% among Asian American men and 39.66% among Asian American women included in the study sample. Based on the ATP III definition, MetS prevalence in our sample was 39.38% among men and 36.11% among women. We found good concordance between the IDF and the ATP III definitions in identifying MetS in Asian American adults. Those with MetS defined only by the IDF definition had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference than those with MetS defined only by the ATP III definition. The IDF definition also better predicted elevated fasting insulin. CONCLUSIONS the IDF definition is more pertinent than the ATP III definition for screening and estimating risk of CVD and diabetes in Asian American adults. Future studies should examine differences in MetS prevalence across Asian ethnic groups to facilitate the development of culturally tailored strategies improve MetS prevention and detection in Asian Americans.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) refers to the pathological state of metabolic disorders in the body's proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other substances. MetS is a systemic metabolic disease. Periodontal disease is also a part of systemic inflammatory diseases. Among Chinese patients with middle-aged and elderly MetS, the periodontal morbidity is very high, which is due to the involvement of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis of MetS and periodontal disease. The latter may also be a risk factor for the former's morbidity and promotion of disease progression. At present, there are not many investigations and studies on periodontal examination data and periodontal disease prevalence of patients with MetS. Coal mine workers, especially coal mine underground workers, have different work natures and different working environments. See related report.We will collect the clinical diagnosis and treatment information of the enrolled patients. We will focus on checking the incidence of periodontal disease and recording. Establish a database, check every 10 medical records, and make corrections in time to ensure data accuracy. We will popularize oral hygiene knowledge for the included patients and guide them to brush their teeth correctly and how to use dental floss. We will perform periodontal examination on the patients' teeth by site and record the plaque index, gingival sulcus bleeding index, periodontal pocket exploration depth and other indicators. We will repeat the above inspection items and record in the second and fourth weeks of the experiment.This study will explore the correlation between periodontal disease and MetS of coal mine workers. We aim to clarify the role and mechanism of MetS in the occurrence and development of periodontal diseases, guide the prevention of periodontal diseases, and thus reduce the prevalence of periodontal diseases. Abstract
Objective: Few studies reported the association between serum uric acid and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in China's coastal residents. We aimed to examine the association between serum uric acid and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome as well as its components in adults and elderly from Shenzhen (a China's coastal city). Methods: We conducted a survey in a community-based household population in Shenzhen, collecting data about 4049 participants aged 20-69 years. Based on the data, we determined the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adults and elderly with different serum uric acid concentrations. Results: According to the revised National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the surveyed participants was 24.69% [95% confidence interval (CI): 23.4%-26.0%]. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in participants with serum uric acid levels <4, 4-4.9, 5-5.9, 6-6.9, 7-7.9, and ≥8 mg/dL is 10.12% (95% CI: 8.2%-12.0%), 17.92% (95% CI: 15.8%-20.1%), 31.05% (95% CI: 28.1%-34.0%), 39.47% (95% CI: 35.4%-43.8%), 49.39% (95% CI: 43.1%-55.7%), and 52.57% (95% CI: 42.5%-62.5%), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that participants with higher serum uric acid levels were at a higher risk of high triglycerides, low high-density lipoprotein, central obesity, high blood pressure, or high fasting glucose (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Serum uric acid levels were closely associated with metabolic syndrome and its components in Chinese coastal population.

Abstract
Most previous studies on metabolic syndrome (MetS) examined urban and high income settings. We thus investigated the prevalence of MetS among a multi-ethnic population living in a low income rural area and explored the use of visceral adiposity and anthropometric indicators to identify men and women with MetS. We recruited 10,029 individuals of nomadic Kazakhs, rural Uyghur and Han residents in Xinjiang, China. MetS was defined by the Joint Interim Statement criteria. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to compare the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of each index. The age-adjusted prevalence of MetS was 21.8%. The visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), body adiposity index (BAI) and the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) were significantly associated with MetS, independent of ethnic, age, and other covariates. The AUC of VAI, LAP and WHtR were all greater than 0.7, and the LAP was the index that most accurately identified MetS status in men (AUC = 0.853) and women (AUC = 0.817), with the optimal cut-offs of 34.7 and 27.3, respectively. In conclusion, the prevalence of MetS in low income rural adults of Xinjiang was high and the LAP was an effective indicator for the screening of MetS.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MS) comprises a set of conditions that are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. Numerous epidemiological studies on MS have been conducted, but there has not been a systematic analysis of the prevalence of MS in the Chinese population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate the pooled prevalence of MS among subjects in Mainland China. Methods We performed a systematic review by searching both English and Chinese literature databases. Random or fixed effects models were used to summarize the prevalence of MS according to statistical tests for heterogeneity. Subgroup, sensitivity, and meta-regression analyses were performed to address heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated using Egger’s test. Results Thirty-five papers were included in the meta-analysis, with a total population of 226,653 Chinese subjects. Among subjects aged 15 years and older, the pooled prevalence was 24.5 % (95 % CI: 22.0–26.9 %). By sex, the prevalences were 19.2 % (95 % CI: 16.9–21.6 %) in males and 27.0 % (95 % CI: 23.5–30.5 %) in females. The pooled prevalence of MS increased with age (15–39 years: 13.9 %; 40–59 years: 26.4 %; and ≥60 years: 32.4 %). Individuals living in urban areas (24.9 %, 95 % CI: 18.5–31.3 %) were more likely to suffer from MS than those living in rural areas (19.2 %, 95 % CI: 14.8–23.7 %). Hypertension was the most prevalent component of MS in males (52.8 %), while the most prevalent component of MS for females was central obesity (46.1 %). Conclusions Our systematic review suggested a high prevalence of MS among subjects in Mainland China, indicating that MS is a serious public health problem. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the prevention and control of MS. Abstract
OBJECTIVES We estimated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and compared associations of different MetS definitions with coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in a rural Chinese population. METHODS Among 4,748 residents (2,145 men and 2,603 women) aged 30+ years in rural China from 2006 to 2007, the prevalence of MetS was estimated by using five different definitions: modified World Health Organization (WHO), Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS), the updated National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) for Asian-Americans, International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and Joint Interim Statement (JIS). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were implemented to estimate the association between MetS and the prevalence of CHD, stroke and PAD, respectively. RESULTS Prevalence of MetS in men was 11.5% (WHO), 14.8% (CDS), 32.4% (NCEP-ATP III), 27.5% (IDF) and 39.7% (JIS) and in women was 15.7% (WHO), 20.7% (CDS), 54.2% (NCEP-ATP III), 51.5% (IDF) and 54.2% (JIS), respectively. Respective ORs (95% CI) for associating MetS with CHD in men were 1.79 (1.02-3.17), 1.25 (0.69-2.26), 1.61 (1.01-2.58), 1.84 (1.14-2.96), and 1.53 (0.96-2.43). Corresponding ORs (95% CI) for stroke in men were 2.18 (95% CI 1.20 to 3.97), 2.20 (95% CI 1.25 to 3.89), 1.71 (95% CI 1.02 to 2.84), 1.30 (95% CI 0.77 to 2.23), and 1.61 (95% CI 0.97 to 2.68), respectively. In women, CHD and stroke were significantly associated with MetS using all five definitions of MetS. In addition, PAD was associated with all five MetS definitions in men, but not in women. Only hyperglycemia and BMI were significantly associated with PAD in women. CONCLUSIONS In this rural Chinese population, the JIS, IDF and CDS criteria may not be more suitable than WHO and updated NCEP-ATPIII definitions for screening high-risk individuals and estimating the risk of CHD and stroke from MetS, especially in men.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) increases the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Information on changes in prevalence of MetSyn in developing countries is limited. This study aims to compare MetSyn prevalence and its associated vascular risk over the period between 2002 and 2010 in a population which has had the world’s fastest economic development over the past three decades. Methods Two health surveys were conducted by using the multistage cluster random sampling method in a Chinese population of 85 million in southern China. The participants received a full medical check-up, including measurement of blood pressure (BP), obesity indices, fasting lipids and glucose levels. Data describing socio-economic status and lifestyle factors were also collected through interview. Metabolic syndrome was defined in accordance with the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Results A total of 3,561 participants from Survey 2010 were included in the data analysis. Women had a significantly higher prevalence of MetSyn than men. Comparison between the two surveys shows that age-standardized prevalence of MetSyn increased fourfold (from 5.4% in 2002 to 21.3% in 2010) in those ≧ 20 years. Among the MetSyn components, prevalence of hyperglycaemia has increased most (from 9.1% to 53.1%). The age-standardized prevalence of central obesity, hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia and low HDL-cholesterol increased from 13.5% to 25.4%, from 23.6% to 40.8%, from 12.1% to 17.4% and from 32.1% to 71.1%, respectively. Differences between rural and urban residents in the prevalence in MetSyn and its components narrowed in 2010. Conclusions Cardiovascular risk escalated dramatically in this population between 2002 and 2010. The escalation may relate to the rapid economic development, which led to accelerating changes in nutrition, lifestyle, and socio-economic status. Our findings suggest that health transition in rapidly developing second- and third-world countries may be much faster than what has been observed in Western countries.

Abstract
Background The last study reported the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in rural Northeast China was conducted approximately ten years ago. We aimed to update the data on the prevalence and epidemiological features of MetS in rural Northeast China. Methods This survey was conducted from July 2012 to August 2013. In this study, a total of 11,496 residents from the rural Northeast China were randomly selected and examined. MetS was defined according to the ATPIII-modified criteria. Data regarding the demographic and lifestyle characteristics and the blood biochemical indexes of these participants were collected by well-trained personnel. Results The prevalence of MetS was 39.0% and was more prevalent in women than in men (45.6% vs. 31.4%, P < 0.001). Elevated blood pressure was the most common metabolic disorder in both genders (71.7% in males and 63.3% in females). Only 11.2% and 9.6% of males and females, respectively, in this study had no metabolic disorders. Multivariate logistic regression, after adjusting for possible confounders, revealed the following factors that increased the risk of MetS: being female, older age, having more than one child, a family income of >20,000 CNY per year, longer sleep duration (>9 h/d), chronic disease status, frequent consumption of beans or bean products and frequent tea drinking. Completion of education through middle school, moderate physical activity and smoking were correlated with lower rates of MetS. Conclusion The prevalence of MetS was high in the rural areas of China, especially among females. In addition to some of the more conventional risk factors associated with MetS, including age, sex, annual income and educational status, we also found that having more than one child and frequent consumption of tea and beans were risk factors for MetS, while smoking was a common factor among those that did not have MetS in rural Northeast China.

Abstract
The purposes of the study were to estimate the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to systematically evaluate the relationship between hematological parameters and MetS in a 5-year follow-up of Beijing adult population. The longitudinal study included 3,180 adults, aged 20-65 years, who attended health check-ups in Beijing Tongren Hospital in 2007 and 2012. Multivariate logistic regression was conducted to explore the associations between hematological parameters and MetS. The 5-year cumulative incidence of MetS in this sample was 10.82 % (14.22 % for males and 7.59 % for females). Among all the hematological parameters, white blood cell count (WBC) was positively associated with MetS for 20-35-year-old (male OR 1.482, 95 % CI 1.169-2.974; female OR 1.398, 95 % CI 1.145-3.011), and 36-50-year-old (male OR 2.012, 95 % CI 1.290-4.010; female OR 3.400, 95 % CI 1.818-4.528) male and female subjects. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was significantly associated with the incidence of MetS for males (20-35-year-old OR 2.080, 95 % CI 1.371-3.159; 36-50-year-old OR 2.421, 95 % CI 1.335-3.412; 51-65-year-old OR 4.267, 95 % CI 1.161-6.781). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was positively associated with MetS for 51-65-year-old (male OR 3.078, 95 % CI 2.468-5.131; female OR 2.140, 95 % CI 1.524-4.359) for male and female subjects. WBC is positively associated with MetS for young adults, while LDL-C is positively associated with MetS for elderly people. ALT is positively associated with MetS for males. Our findings provide further evidence in support of using hematological markers for early detection of individuals at risk for MetS.

Abstract
Background Whether cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption are associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains controversial. This study investigated the associations of cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption with MetS in a male population in China. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was used to collect data on cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, MetS status, and other related information from 8169 men aged 19–97 years. Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between smoking and alcohol consumption and the risk of MetS. Results The prevalence of MetS was 15.2% in the study population. Proportions of current smokers and drinkers were 48.2% and 46.5%, respectively. Adjusted OR of MetS was 1.34 (95% CI, 1.01–1.79) among smokers who smoked ≥40 cigarettes/day compared with nonsmokers and 1.22 (95% CI 1.03–1.46) for those who consumed 0.1–99 grams of alcohol/day compared with nondrinkers. Adjusted OR was 2.32 (95% CI 1.45–3.73) among ex-drinkers who never smoked, 1.98 (95% CI 1.35–2.91) among ex-drinkers who were current smokers, and 1.34 (95% CI 1.08–1.68) among current drinkers who never smoked compared with those who neither smoked nor drank. There was a significant interaction between smoking and drinking alcohol on MetS (P for interaction is 0.001). Conclusions Our study indicated that smoking and drinking is associated with higher prevalence of MetS. Interactions between smoking and drinking on the risk of MetS in men in China may also exist. Our findings need to be confirmed in future case-control or cohort studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate the up-to-date prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its influencing factors among the Chinese adults. METHODS Data were obtained from the China Health and Nutrition Survey conducted in 2009, which was a cross-sectional and partially nationally representative study including a total of 7488 Chinese adults (age ≥18 years). RESULTS The overall age-standardized prevalence estimates of the MS were 21.3% (95%confidence interval (CI): 20.4%-22.2%), 18.2% (95%CI: 17.3%-19.1%) and 10.5% (95%CI: 9.8%-11.2%) based on definitions of revised NCEP ATPIII, IDF and CDS criteria, respectively. Individuals who were women (compared to men: odds ratio [OR]=1.37, 95% CI=1.16-1.61), 40 years or older (compared to less than 40 years old: OR=2.82, 95%CI=2.37-3.34 for 40-59 years; OR=4.41, 95%CI=3.68-5.29 for 60 years or older), overweight/obese (compared to normal weight: OR=4.32, 95%CI=3.77-4.95 for overweight; OR=11.24, 95%CI=9.53-13.26 for obese), and living in urban area (compared to living in rural area: OR=1.27, 95%CI=1.12-1.43) were more likely to have a higher prevalence estimate of MS. In addition, frequency of alcohol consumption and cigarette intake were also found to be significantly associated with probability of MS. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest an urgent need to develop national strategies for the prevention, detection, treatment and control of obesity and MS in China.

Abstract
Increasing evidence suggests that 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels are associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). In 2010, we explored the association of serum 25(OH)D and PTH levels with MetS in 1,390 Chinese participants, aged 20-83 years. Anthropometric phenotypes, blood pressure, and the incidence of MetS were evaluated. In addition, serum lipids, 25(OH)D, and PTH were measured. The median concentration of 25(OH)D and PTH were 55.3 nmol/l and 2.8 pmol/l, respectively. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (<50 nmol/l) was 39.9 %, with 34.5 % in men and 47.8 % in women. After accounting for confounding factors and serum PTH, a 10 nmol/l higher serum 25(OH)D level was associated with a 10 % lower risk of MetS (OR = 0.90, 95 % CI 0.84-0.96, P = 0.0007). Furthermore, participants with vitamin D sufficiency had a 35 % lower risk of MetS than those with vitamin D deficiency (OR = 0.65, 95 % CI 0.51-0.84, P = 0.0009). PTH was not associated with the risk of MetS after adjustment for confounding factors. These results were confirmed in both men and women. Thus in this cohort of Chinese individuals, vitamin D deficiency is common and optimal vitamin D level is inversely associated with MetS, independent of several confounders and PTH level. The clinical significance of these findings warrants further study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in rural and urban areas in the province of Segovia, Spain, and its relationship to lifestyle habits, cardiovascular risk, and serum adiponectin concentrations. METHODS The study had a cross-sectional design and included 888 individual residents in the province of Segovia, Autonomous Community of Castilla-León. RESULTS The age/sex standardized prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was by: (1) American Heart Association/National Heart Lung and Blood Institute criteria (AHA/NHLBI), 17%; (2) International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 24.3%; and (3) Consensus Societies/Joint Interim Statement (CS), 27.8%. A high correlation was found between the different criteria. No formal education [odds ratio (OR) 6.9 (2.4-20.2)] and primary education [6.7 (2.8-15.9)] were independently associated with metabolic syndrome. An inverse association with metabolic syndrome was found for subjects doing a high level of exercise during work [0.4 (0.2-0.7)] as well as those who were mild drinkers [alcohol intake of less than 15 grams/daily, 0.4 (0.3-0.8)]. Among subjects with low estimated cardiovascular risk, adiponectin levels are higher in those who do not meet criteria of metabolic syndrome. A total of 29.7% of subjects meeting CS criteria had >20% 10-year predicted risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) by the Framingham risk score criteria [4.5 (2.4-8.5)]. CONCLUSIONS Our results show: (1) A higher estimated prevalence of metabolic syndrome according to IDF and CS criteria. (2) Low educational level was independently associated with metabolic syndrome. A high level of physical activity and a daily alcohol intake of less than 15 grams/day were inversely associated with metabolic syndrome. (3) Metabolic syndrome increases the predicted CVD risk. (4) Adiponectin levels are not inversely related to insulin resistance in subjects with high cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess whether the contributions of individual metabolic syndrome components to coronary heart disease (CHD) risk vary in patients with different glucose tolerance. METHODS A total of 1619 patients were included in this cross-sectional study. CHD, metabolic syndrome and glucose tolerance were assessed using coronary angiography, anthropometric and biochemical parameters, and an oral glucose tolerance test, respectively. Associations between CHD and components of metabolic syndrome were determined using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) was the only CHD risk factor in patients with both CHD and metabolic syndrome who had normal glucose tolerance, after adjustments for age, smoking and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) concentration. In patients with CHD plus metabolic syndrome and prediabetes, the most important risk factor was hypertension; additional risk factors were high postprandial blood glucose (PBG) and low HDL-C. In patients with CHD plus metabolic syndrome and diabetes, high PBG was the strongest risk factor, followed by hypertension, high FBG and high waist circumference. CONCLUSIONS Individual components of metabolic syndrome contributed variously to CHD across different glucose tolerance statuses.

Abstract
CONTEXT Few studies examined associations of circulating n-3 fatty acid levels with metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese populations who have low consumption of these fatty acids and high risk of developing MetS. OBJECTIVE The objective of the study was to determine associations between erythrocyte n-3 fatty acids and MetS as well as its components among middle-aged and older Chinese men and women. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS Erythrocyte levels of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), docosapentaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and α-linolenic acid (ALA) were measured by gas chromatography among 2754 participants aged 50-70 yr living in Beijing and Shanghai. MetS was defined using the updated National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for Asian-Americans. RESULTS After multivariable adjustment, higher levels of DHA, but neither eicosapentaenoic acid nor docosapentaenoic acid, were associated with lower odds of MetS as well as elevated blood pressure and triglycerides. Comparing extreme quartiles of DHA, odds ratios (95% confidence interval) were 0.75 (0.55, 1.01; P for trend = 0.04) for MetS; 0.70 (0.53, 0.92; P for trend = 0.01) for elevated blood pressure; and 0.64 (0.48, 0.87; P for trend = 0.005) for elevated triglycerides. In contrast, ALA concentrations were positively associated with MetS odds (odds ratio 4.06; 95% confidence interval 2.85, 5.80; P for trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS Higher concentrations of erythrocyte DHA were associated with lower odds of MetS, whereas higher concentrations of ALA were associated with increased odds among middle-aged and older Chinese. These findings warrant replication in other populations.

Abstract
Background and Aims Metabolic syndrome (MS) is prevalent in recent years but few data is reported in the rural areas in China. The aim of this study was to examine MS prevalence and its risk factors among women in rural China. Methods and Results The Nantong Metabolic Syndrome Study (NMSS), a population based cross-sectional study, was conducted during 2007–2008 in Nantong, China. In person interviews, blood glucose and lipid measurements were completed for 13,505 female participants aged 18–74 years. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the US Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program, the Adult Treatment Panel (ATPIII) and modified ATPIII for Asian population has determined three criteria of MS. These criteria for MS were used and compared in this study. The prevalence of MS was 22.0%, 16.9% and 23.3% according to IDF, ATPIII and ATPIII-modified criteria, respectively. Levels of agreement of these criteria for MS were above 0.75. We found that vigorous-intensity of occupational physical activity was associated with a low prevalence of MS with OR of 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63–0.91). Rice wine drinkers (alcohol >12.8 g/day) had about 34% low risks of developing MS with OR of 0.66 (95% CI: 0.48–0.91), compared with non-drinkers. Odds ratio of MS was 1.81 (95% CI: 1.15–2.84) in women who smoked more than 20 pack-years, compared to non-smokers. Odds ratio of MS was 1.56 (95% CI: 1.25–1.95) in women who had familial history of diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and stroke, compared to women without familial history of those diseases. Conclusion MS is highly prevalent among women in rural China. Both physical activity and rice wine consumption play a protective role, while family history and smoking are risk factors in MS development. Educational programs should be established for promoting healthy lifestyles and appropriate interventions in rural China.

Abstract
Background The metabolic syndrome has been shown to increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Little information exists on the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome for southern Chinese. We therefore investigate the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in a southern Chinese population with 85 million residents. Methods The Guangdong Nutrition and Health Survey 2002 is a cross-sectional survey designed to assess the health and nutritional status of 85 million residents in Guangdong province located in southern China. Stratified multistage random sampling method was applied in this survey and a provincial representative sample of 6,468 residents aged 20 years or above was obtained in the present study. The participants received a full medical check-up including measurement of blood pressure, obesity indices, fasting lipids and glucose levels. Data describing socioeconomic and lifestyle factors was also collected through interview. Metabolic syndrome was defined in accordance with the International Diabetes Federation criteria. Results The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 7.30%, translating into a total of 4.0 million residents aged 20 years or above having the condition in this southern Chinese population. The urban population had higher prevalence of the syndrome than the rural population (10.57% vs 4.30%). Females had a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome than males (8.99% vs 5.27%). More than 60% of the adults had at least one component of the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Our results indicate that a large proportion of southern Chinese adults have the metabolic syndrome and associated risk factors. The metabolic syndrome has become an important public health problem in China. These findings emphasize the urgent need to develop population level strategies for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular risk in China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the association of biomarkers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction with diabetes and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in persons from Inner Mongolia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2,536 people aged 20 years and older from Inner Mongolia, China. Overnight fasting blood samples were obtained to measure plasma concentrations of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), soluble inter-cellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), sE-selectin, angiotensin II, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose. Waist circumference and blood pressure were measured by trained staff. MetS was defined according to the modified ATP III definition for Asians. Elevated level of the biomarker was defined as values in the upper tertile of the distribution. Participants were categorized into one of four groups based on the presence or absence of metabolic and glycemic abnormalities: 1) free of prediabetes, diabetes and MetS (reference group), 2) prediabetes or diabetes only, 3) MetS without prediabetes or diabetes, and 4) MetS plus prediabetes or diabetes. The multivariable models are adjusted for age, gender, smoking, drinking, family history of hypertension, and body mass index. RESULTS Among study participants, 18.5% had prediabetes, 3.6% had diabetes, and 27.4% of the entire study population had 3 or more components of the MetS. Elevated hsCRP was associated with an increased odds of prediabetes or diabetes only, MetS without prediabetes or diabetes, and MetS plus prediabetes or diabetes with multivariable adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 2.3 (1.7-3.1), 3.0 (2.4-3.8), and 5.8 (4.5-7.5), respectively. Elevated sICAM-1 was associated with increased odds (95% CI) of prediabetes or diabetes only (2.1, 1.6-2.9) and MetS plus prediabetes or diabetes (4.2, 3.2-5.3) but was not associated with MetS alone. Elevated sE-selectin was associated with a modestly increased risk of MetS (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.4-2.2). Elevated levels of Angiotensin II were not associated with the MetS plus prediabetes or diabetes in this study. CONCLUSIONS Diabetes and the MetS are common in the Inner Mongolia population. The biomarkers of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction are associated with increased risk for diabetes and MetS in this population. These results are consistent with results from other populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social disparities in obesity are often more marked among women than men, possibly due to social factors. Taking a life-history perspective, we hypothesized that childhood infections could be relevant via sex-specific effects of immune system activation on sexual development and, hence, body shape. METHODS We used multivariable linear regression to assess the sex-specific, adjusted associations of 'childhood' pathogens [0 (n = 1002), 1 (n = 2199), 2 (n = 3442) or 3 (n = 4833) of HSV1, CMV and hepatitis A antibodies] and 'adult' pathogens [0 (n = 5836), 1 (n = 3018) or ≥ 2 (n = 720) of HSV2, HHV8 and hepatitis B or C) with waist-hip ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) standard deviations (SDs) using NHANES III (1988-94). As validation, we assessed associations with height. RESULTS 'Childhood' pathogens were positively associated with WHR among women [0.18 SD, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.04-0.32 for 3, compared with 0], but not men (-0.04 SD, 95% CI -0.15 to 0.08), adjusted for age, education, race/ethnicity, smoking and alcohol. Further adjustments for leg length barely changed the estimates. There were no such sex-specific associations for BMI or for adult pathogens. 'Childhood', but not 'adult', pathogens were negatively associated with height, adjusted for age, sex, education and race/ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS These observations are consistent with the lifecourse hypothesis that early exposure to infections makes women vulnerable to central obesity. This hypothesis potentially sheds new light on the developmental origins of obesity, and is consistent with the generally higher levels of central obesity among women than men in developing populations.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components in both rural and urban Chinese population. SUBJECTS AND METHODS A population-based crosssectional survey was conducted in Qingdao, China in 2006 with 6100 Chinese aged 35-74 yr invited and 5355 who attended; 3357 subjects, 1562 urban (46.5%) and 1795 rural residents (53.5%) met the inclusion criteria for the current data analysis. The metabolic syndrome definitions of National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Expert Panel III (NCEPATPIII) 2004, NCEP 2005 and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) were used. RESULTS The age-standardized prevalences of metabolic syndrome were 16.2%, 32.2%, and 28.3% in men and 26.8%, 37.2%, and 34.6%in women, according to the definitions of the NCEP 2004, NCEP 2005, and IDF, respectively. Urban men have more risk factors and higher prevalence of the metabolic syndrome than rural men, but the differences in women were not that striking. Elevated blood pressure (62.6%) was, among risk factors, most common in the study population, followed by central obesity (53.4%), and hyperglycemia (52.2%) defined using the NCEP 2005 criteria. CONCLUSIONS Metabolic disorders were common among adult Chinese in both rural and urban areas in Qingdao.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide a current overview of the worldwide prevalence and pattern of cardiovascular disease and discuss the role of sodium intake and salt sensitivity, with a focus on the Asian Indian population. METHODS An extensive search of the literature from PubMed and the Cochrane Library was undertaken. Moreover, the pathophysiologic basis of the relationship between sodium intake and insulin sensitivity in various populations was reviewed. RESULTS High blood pressure is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease and mortality globally. Although salt sensitivity is a frequent determinant of hypertension, a strong link between salt sensitivity and cardiovascular disease associated with insulin resistance has not received adequate attention. This may be particularly relevant to the public health challenges of increasing prevalences of obesity, diabetes, and cardiometabolic syndrome in India where, according to recent estimates, approximately 60% of the world's cases of cardiovascular disease occur and the salt consumption is among the highest in any large population. CONCLUSION There is evidence for a strong link between increased salt sensitivity and insulin resistance leading to metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. This relationship may be particularly relevant to the escalating epidemic of cardiovascular disease in the southern Asian Indian population. A broad-based community action to achieve at least a modest restriction of salt intake can yield important health benefits and is urgently needed.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is characterized by multiple risk factors and is associated with increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The rapid change in the lifestyle and food habits of Chinese people has resulted in metabolic syndrome becoming one of the most widespread health challenges in China. Recently, the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) was developed as a new parameter reflecting arterial stiffness and providing an index of vascular status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on CAVI. A total of 222 Chinese subjects aged 50-92 years participated in this study. We measured CAVI and examined blood samples to define metabolic syndrome according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria. CAVI in the subjects with abnormal waist circumference was significantly higher than that obtained in the normal subjects (P < 0.01). In the abnormal high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) group, CAVI was significantly increased (P < 0.01) compared to the normal HDL-C group. CAVI showed a positive correlation with waist circumference and increased significantly with the number of metabolic syndrome components. In conclusion, subjects with metabolic syndrome have a high CAVI that indicated arterial stiffness and is closely associated with an increase in the number of metabolic syndrome risk factors. Elevated abdominal obesity and low HDL-C are the main players affecting arterial stiffness in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese. These findings suggest that interaction of the individual components of metabolic syndrome plays a role in the relationship between metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of metabolic syndrome has varied markedly between different studies because of the lack of internationally agreed-upon criteria to define the condition. We estimated the prevalence and lifestyle risk factors of metabolic syndrome according to three definitions of metabolic syndrome in urban Chinese men participating in the Shanghai Men's Health Study (SMHS). METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 3988 middle-aged, urban Chinese men 40-74 years of age who were free of type 2 diabetes at baseline provided fasting blood samples, anthropometric measurements, and information on lifestyle factors and disease history. RESULTS The three definitions of metabolic syndrome used in this report are from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the U.S. Third Report of the National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III), and a modified version of the ATP III criteria for Asian populations (ATP III-modified criteria). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 18.63%, 18.36%, and 29.34% according to IDF, ATP III, and ATP III-modified criteria, respectively. Agreement between the IDF and ATP III criteria was moderate (kappa = 0.43), whereas agreement between ATP III-modified and the IDF and ATP III criteria was good (kappa = 0.71 and 0.70, respectively). Physical activity was associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome, whereas drinking more than three drinks per day was associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, regardless of the criteria employed. The association between smoking and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this population failed to reach significance. CONCLUSIONS Results from this representative sample of middle-aged, urban Chinese men show that metabolic syndrome is highly prevalent in this population. Our data support the hypothesis that physical activity decreases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and that high alcohol consumption increases risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) has been increasing in China in recent years. The aim of this study is to estimate and compare the prevalence of MS among Chinese adults in Shanghai, one of the most economic developed areas in China, using definitions proposed by World Health Organization (WHO), National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (modified ATP III) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF). METHODS This cross-sectional study included 5,584 adults at age 20-79 randomly selected from Pudong New Area of Shanghai, China, through a three-stage sampling. All participants were interviewed in-person between April and July of 2008 to collect information on demographic and lifestyle characteristics. At the interview, anthropometry and blood pressure were measured and bio-specimens were collected. RESULTS The prevalence estimates for the MS increased with age for each definition in men and women, but the estimates varied greatly between the definitions and by sex. The prevalence of the MS was higher in men (20.2%) than in women (18.7%) using WHO definition but this sex difference was reversed when using the modified ATP III (28.4% for men vs. 35.1% for women) and the IDF (15.9% for men vs. 26.7% for women) criteria. The most common metabolic disorder in this population was dyslipidaemia, regardless of the definition used. Substantial agreement, estimated using the kappa statistic, was found between the modified ATP III and IDF definition, whereas the lowest agreement was observed between the WHO and ATP III criteria. CONCLUSIONS The MS is highly prevalent among Chinese adults in Pudong New Area of Shanghai and the most prevalent component was dyslipidemia. These findings underscore the importance of prevention and control efforts for the MS in this area and the need for a unified predictive definition for the syndrome for use by clinical practitioners and public health agencies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS We aimed to estimate appropriate cutoff of hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) designated for impaired fasting glucose (IFG)/diabetes mellitus (DM) and to evaluate the association between HTGW and fasting glucose, IFG and DM, respectively. METHODS A cross-sectional survey in a nationally representative sample of 15,540 Chinese adults aged 35-74 years was conducted during 2000-2001. RESULTS Appropriate cutoffs of HTGW designated both for IFG and DM was triglyceride> or =110mg/dl and waist circumference> or =75cm both among men and women. Overall 35.4% of men as well as 33.6% of women had HTGW. Moreover 30.8%, 7.2% of men with HTGW as well as 30.0%, 9.7% of women had IFG and DM, respectively. Furthermore multivariate models revealed that adjusted odds ratios of IFG and DM were 2.7 (1.7, 2.5) and 2.6 (1.8, 3.8) for men with HTGW as well as 1.7 (1.4, 2.1) and 3.6 (2.5, 5.1) for women, respectively. CONCLUSIONS As the phenotype of visceral obesity HTGW was more common among Chinese adults. Global lifestyle modification should be targeted at adults with HTGW to prevent the premature incidence of DM and reduce the burden in future in China.

Abstract
Obesity is a medical condition with excess body fat accumulation to the extent which leads to serious health consequences. Abdominal obesity, also known as central obesity, refers to the presence of excess fat in the abdominal area. Obesity, especially abdominal obesity, contributes to many metabolic disorders including metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The incidence of obesity has increased dramatically in recent years worldwide. In China, more than one-third of adults are overweight or obese and 10%-20% of all adults are affected by MetS. The pathogenesis underlying the abdominal obesity remains unclear. The ultimate health outcome of obesity and its related metabolic disorders haveprompted physicians to take aggressive treatments (lifestyle changes, pharmacological interventions and surgical therapies) before a serious consequence becomes clinically apparent. In this review, we discuss the prevalence, pathogenesis and clinic features of obesity in China.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among middle-aged and elderly adults in Jiangsu province, China. Moreover, factors associated with MetS were also assessed. A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 4 randomly selected areas including both urban and rural areas from Jiangsu province, China. After the procedure, 3914 adults aged 35 to 74 years were included in the study. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III report. Data were collected by interviewer-administered questionnaire, biophysical assessment, and biochemical examination. Crude and age-standardized prevalence of MetS was 31.5% and 30.5%, respectively. Prevalence rate increased significantly with age in female but not in male subjects, whereas this was true for both sexes with increased body mass index. High blood pressure was the most prevalent component of MetS (45.2%), followed by elevated triglycerides (40.1%) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (40.1%). Multivariate ordinal regression analysis revealed that women had significantly higher risk of MetS than men (odds ratio = 1.72, P < .001). Older age, living in urban area, income, family history of diabetes, and family history of hypertension were positively associated with MetS risk. However, higher education and tea drinking everyday were found to be negatively associated with MetS (P < .05). Moreover, substantial agreement (kappa = 0.79) was found between the International Diabetes Federation and modified Adult Treatment Panel III criteria among 3 comparisons of MetS definitions. Metabolic syndrome was highly prevalent in middle-aged and elderly Chinese population in Jiangsu province. Community-based strategies for diet and lifestyle modifications are strongly suggested, especially in women and the elderly.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of individual cardiovascular disease risk factors, which doubles the risk of early mortality. The authors' aimed to determine the prevalence and population attributable risk (PAR%) of the MetS among men according to demographic, physical, and lifestyle risk factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1195 men in the Florey Adelaide Male Ageing Study, a regionally representative cohort of Australian men aged 35 to 81 years conducted in 2002-2005 (response rate, 45.1%). Prevalent MetS was determined according to the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) classifications; and an extensive list of demographic, physical (including muscle strength, body composition by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, sex hormones), and lifestyle factors was accounted for. Prevalence estimates were 37.7% and 41.8% for ATPIII and IDF classifications. Odds ratios for present MetS were determined using multiple-adjusted logistic regression. Odds for present ATPIII MetS decreased (in order of importance) for lower insulin and increased for lower muscle mass, lower strength, and 3+ medical conditions. Odds for present IDF MetS decreased for lower insulin and increased for lower muscle mass, strength, and sex hormone-binding globulin levels; older age; and being married. Significant PAR% due to lowest insulin, muscle mass, and strength quarters were -44%, 27%, and 17% for the ATPIII Met, and -48%, 31%, and 20% for the IDF MetS. A substantial proportion of MetS cases would have been theoretically prevented if prior exposure to low muscle mass and strength were eradicated (PAR% ranged from 14% to 24%). Findings indicate that insulin resistance is a central abnormality in the MetS and that muscle mass and strength are strong protective factors independent of insulin resistance and abdominal fat accumulation. If confirmed prospectively, increases in muscle mass and strength needed to prevent a substantial proportion of MetS cases would be achievable with a short-term strength training intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare application of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) 3 definitions, proposed by International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2005, Adult Treatment Panel III (ATPIII) in 2005 and Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS) in 2004, in Mongolian people of agricultural and pastoral areas in Inner Mongolia, China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Chaoluto and Guribanhua township of Tongliao City of Inner Mongolia, between June 2003 and August 2004. A total of 2536 Mongolian people aged 20 yr and older completed all the surveys and examinations. Anthropometry, blood pressure, and fasting biochemistry were measured according to standard methods. RESULTS The age-standardized prevalence of MetS using the IDF, ATPIII, and CDS definitions was 17.1% (men 11.4%, women 21.6%), 22.9% (men 19.6%, women 25.8%) and 8.1% (men 7.6%, women 8.6%), respectively. The agreement of IDF and ATPIII, IDF and CDS, ATPIII and CDS were 93.5%, 85.0%, and 81.6%, and Kappa values were 0.822, 0.434, and 0.419, respectively. Among the subjects who had 3 or more MetS components, 100% were screened by ATPIII criteria, 76.1% by IDF criteria (men 57.3%, women 85.7%), and 33.5% by CDS criteria (men 7.6%, women 8.6%) respectively. CONCLUSIONS This investigation in Mongolian people showed very high agreement between IDF and ATPIII definitions, and moderate agreement between CDS and 2 other criteria. The cut points of waist circumference for males in IDF and ATPIII seemed high, and whether CDS definition should lower the fasting plasma glucose value from 6.1 to 5.6 mmol/l needs examination through further prospective studies in the Chinese population.
