Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of children with cancer face bio-psycho-social-spiritual concerns which can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL). We examined the impact of an integrative oncology (IO) intervention on QoL-related concerns among parents of children in a pediatric hematology-oncology department. MEASURES The study was prospective, controlled, nonrandomized and patient-preferenced. Parents of children recently (≤6 weeks) diagnosed with cancer were assessed using the measure yourself concerns and wellbeing (MYCaW), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30). Parents in both groups were reassessed after three weeks. INTERVENTION An IO consultation was provided, with training in daily relaxation-breathing and manual treatments, and guidance on herbal medicine. OUTCOMES Of 68 parents consenting to participate, 37 (54%) underwent the intervention with 31 serving as controls. Multivariate analysis found the IO intervention group to contain more Hebrew-speakers (OR=5.96, 95% CI=1.3-27.3, P=0.022); females (OR=5.23, 95% CI=1.1-24.8, P=0.038); and report pain (OR=1.2, 95% CI=1.0-1.4, P=0.045) and impaired appetite on ESAS (OR=1.23, 95% CI=1.01-1.48, P=0.034) when compared to controls. Only the intervention group showed improved baseline-to-3-week scores for physical functioning (P<0.001), cognitive functioning (0=0.018) and fatigue on EORTC (P<0.001); and for ESAS appetite (P<0.001) and anxiety (P=0.02). ESAS sleep increased only in controls (P=0.029). CONCLUSIONS/LESSONS LEARNED IO interventions in pediatric hematology-oncology addressing QoL-related concerns among parents are feasible, potentially increasing predominantly physical symptoms and functioning. Further research is needed to confirm these "real-world" clinical outcomes, and the role of IO in "Caring for the Caregiver".

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to test the inter-rater reliability, construct validity, and feasibility of the modified "Which Health Approaches and Treatments Are You Using?" (WHAT) questionnaires in pediatric oncology; Methods: Parent-child dyads were invited to complete self- and proxy-report-modified WHAT, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, demographics, a diary of the child's recent use of CHA, and a questionnaire assessing the aspects of feasibility. Parents were asked to complete a satisfaction of their children's use of the CHA survey; Results: Twenty-four dyads completed the study. The mean weighted kappa showed strong inter-rater reliability (k = 0.77, SE = 0.056), and strong agreements between the modified WHAT and the diary (self-report [k = 0.806, SE = 0.046] and proxy-report [k = 0.894, SE = 0.057]). Significant relationships were found only between recent and non-recent CHA users in relation to the easy access to CHA (self-report [p = 0.02], proxy-report [p < 0.001]). The mean scores of the feasibility scale (out of 7.0) for the self- and proxy-report were 5.64 (SD = 0.23) and 5.81 (SD = 0.22), respectively, indicating the feasibility of the modified WHAT; Conclusions: The findings provide initial evidence of the reliability and validity of the modified WHAT and their feasibility. Further research is needed to test the theoretical relationships and further explore the validity and reliability of the modified WHAT.

Complementary Health Approaches for the Symptoms of Pediatric Oncology Patients. Holist Nurs Pract 2023; 37:98-109. Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the complementary health approaches (CHAs) used by pediatric oncology patients' parents for symptoms, their positive-negative effects, and the factors that influence their usage. The study was a descriptive design. The data were collected between March and November 2014 from the parents of 156 pediatric oncology patients in 2 different university hospitals in Turkey using the face-to-face interview method. In total, 99.4% of the parents who participated in the study used at least 1 CHA for their children. Complementary health approaches frequently adopted by the parents included praying (96.8%), oblation/sacrifice (50.6%), carob molasses (27.6%), grape molasses (22.4%), and massage (22.4%). Forty-three parents reported that they gave carob molasses to their children to reduce the symptoms of neutropenia, whereas 32 parents reported that they gave them grape molasses and 34 parents reported that they massaged their children to mitigate symptoms of pain. The parents reported that they used CHAs to enhance their child's immune system (61.3%), to do everything in their power to treat their child (42%), and to combat the side effects of medication/radiotherapy (25.8%). None of parents stated that they had observed any side effects from using CHAs. Almost all of the parents use one of the CHAs. The health personnel especially nurses should inform pediatric oncology patients and their parents about CHAs, which have no evidence and are potentially harmful and encourage them to approaches supportive to medical treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of childhood cancer survivors may be vulnerable to experiencing poor health outcomes, but little is known about how these parents use healthcare. This study investigated the nature and extent of survivors' parents' healthcare and medication use relative to a comparison group. We also examined whether demographic or cancer-related factors were related to healthcare use and whether healthcare use was associated with parents' general functioning. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 55 parents of cancer survivors recruited through eight Australian hospitals, and 135 parents of children without a cancer diagnosis, through an online recruitment platform. Participants responded to a questionnaire assessing their health service usage, regular medications, general functioning (engagement activities including work/study) and anxiety and depression symptoms (using PROMIS short forms). We performed regression analysis to determine factors related to healthcare and medication use in parents of survivors. RESULTS More parents of survivors reported accessing mental health services than comparison parents (56% vs. 33%, p=.003), mainly due to their use of social workers. Fewer parents of survivors reported accessing other community health services, particularly general practitioners (51% vs. 78%, p<.001). Having a child survivor who was male was associated with greater use of community health services (B= -0.67, p=.008). No other demographic or cancer-related variables were associated with health service use. Health service use was not associated with general functioning, but greater medication use was associated with higher anxiety scores (B = 1.41, p=.008). CONCLUSION Parents of childhood cancer survivors showed different patterns of health service use relative to comparison parents, but the extent of their use was not significantly linked with demographic or cancer-related variables. Comprehensive assessment of parents' needs in clinical encounters remains vital to identify and appropriately match support needs with available services.

Abstract
Purpose Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) strategies are commonly used in pediatric oncology. Patterns may vary based on country income. We systematically reviewed published studies describing T&CM use among pediatric oncology patients in low-income countries (LIC/LMIC), middle-income countries (UMIC), and high-income countries (HIC). Objectives included describing estimated prevalence of use, reasons for use, perceived effectiveness, modalities used, rates of disclosure, and reporting of delayed or abandoned treatment. Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, Global Health, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and ProceedingsFirst were searched. Inclusion criteria were primary studies involving children younger than the age of 18 years, undergoing active treatment of cancer, and any T&CM use. Exclusion criteria included no pediatric oncology–specific outcomes and studies involving only children off active treatment. Data were extracted by two reviewers using a systematic data extraction form determined a priori. Results Sixty-five studies published between 1977 and 2015 were included, representing 61 unique data sets and 7,219 children from 34 countries. The prevalence of T&CM use ranged from 6% to 100%. Median rates of use were significantly different in LIC/LMIC (66.7% ± 19%), UMIC (60% ± 26%), and HIC (47.2% ± 20%; P = .02). Rates of disclosure differed significantly by country income, with higher median rates in HIC. Seven studies reported on treatment abandonment or delays. Conclusion The use of T&CM in pediatric oncology is common worldwide, with higher median prevalence of use reported in LIC/LMIC. Further research is warranted to examine the impact on treatment abandonment and delay.

Abstract
<p>Determinar frecuencia, características y factores asociados al uso de terapias complementarias y alternativas en pacientes pediátricos en un departamento de oncología en Colombia.</p><p><strong>Métodos </strong>Estudio transversal en el que se aplica una encuesta a 398 cuidadores de pacientes pediátricos con cáncer en el Instituto Nacional de Cancerología en Bogotá, Colombia. Se registró información sociodemográfica y clínica, se evaluó el tipo de terapia, mecanismos de acción propuestos y patrones de uso de los tratamientos. Con regresión logística se evaluaron factores asociados con el uso de estas terapias.</p><p><strong>Resultados </strong>Todos los casos correspondieron a terapias complementarias usadas para efectuar curación o controlar síntomas de la enfermedad o del tratamiento. Un 81,9 % de los pacientes (IC95 %: 77,8% a 85,6 %) había recibido algún tipo de 81 diferentes modalidades utilizadas. Lo más utilizado fueron las terapias basadas biológicamente (especialmente jugos de frutos rojos). Quienes más frecuentemente usaron estas terapias fueron mujeres con mayor nivel educativo. El tiempo desde el diagnóstico y haber recibido tratamiento quirúrgico también se asociaron con el uso de estas terapias. El mecanismo de acción más frecuentemente atribuido fue el refuerzo inmunológico.</p><p><strong>Conclusión</strong> Se encontró una alta prevalencia de uso de terapias complementarias en esta muestra. Los pediatras deberían explorar en los pacientes el uso de estas terapias dado el potencial de interacciones con tratamientos farmacológicos o efectos adversos.</p>

Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is applied both to children and adults widely throughout the world. A previous pan-European survey showed a surprisingly high CAM-use in Turkish children. This review aimed to survey information on the use of CAM in pediatrics in Turkey. DATA SOURCES A narrative, non-systematic review was conducted by melding expert opinions with a thorough and balanced review of available evidence. An unrestricted literature search using the key words, "alternative", "complementary", "integrative", "prevalence" and "pediatric" or "children" and "Turkey" was performed by internet search in March, 2012 using PubMed and Google Scholar. RESULTS CAM use was examined in general pediatrics, pediatric oncology, patients with asthma, and patients with diabetes. A frequency of CAM use was 87% in Turkish pediatric patients, with a mean of 60%. The primary sources of information about CAM are family and friends. Communication with patients/parents and health care professionals showed that most parents do not speak about CAM use with their physicians or nurses. CONCLUSIONS CAM is extensively used in Turkish pediatric patients. This might be due to Turkey's status as a developing country in which a traditional medical system still dominates in comparison to developed countries. Thus, larger studies are required to prove an extensive use of CAM in Turkey, as this review article does not have the capacity for in-depth analysis. Knowledge about CAM and its related topics is essential for physicians and nurses in order to meet the patients' wish for a competent consultation concerning all aspects of a possible therapy.

Abstract
Objective: To review the literature on cultural factors influencing clinical care and family management of pediatric cancer. Methods: A literature review including 72 articles related to cultural issues in pediatric cancer was conducted. Information was organized around several clinically driven themes. Results: Cultural factors influenced many aspects of the cancer experience including illness representations, reaction to diagnosis, illness disclosure patterns, complementary and alternative medicine use, management of medical procedures, coping strategies, and end of life issues. Conclusion: Increased awareness of cultural factors is needed to improve clinical care and reduce health disparities. Abstract
BACKGROUND Complementary and alternative medicine is frequently used in the management of chronic pediatric diseases, but little is known about its use by those with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy. METHODS Complementary and alternative medicine use by male patients with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy and associations with characteristics of male patients and their caregivers were examined through interviews with 362 primary caregivers identified from the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network. RESULTS Overall, 272 of the 362 (75.1%) primary caregivers reported that they had used any complementary and alternative medicine for the oldest Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network male in their family. The most commonly reported therapies were from the mind-body medicine domain (61.0%) followed by those from the biologically based practice (39.2%), manipulative and body-based practice (29.3%), and whole medical system (6.9%) domains. Aquatherapy, prayer and/or blessing, special diet, and massage were the most frequently used therapies. Compared with nonusers, male patients who used any therapy were more likely to have an early onset of symptoms and use a wheel chair; their caregivers were more likely to be non-Hispanic white. Among domains, associations were observed with caregiver education and family income (mind-body medicines [excluding prayer and/or blessing only] and whole medical systems) and Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network site (biologically based practices and mind-body medicines [excluding prayer and/or blessing only]). CONCLUSIONS Complementary and alternative medicine use was common in the management of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies among Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network males. This widespread use suggests further study to evaluate the efficacy of integrating complementary and alternative medicine into treatment regimens for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies.

Abstract
PURPOSE The main objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use, types and reasons for use, and determinants of use among survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS An interviewer-based survey of CAM use was administered to 197 survivors or their guardians. Demographic data, CAM therapies used, purpose and referral for use, and communication about use was collected. RESULTS A total of 115 (58%) survivors reported using CAM in survivorship, 72% of which used biologically based therapies. The majority of therapies were used for relaxation and stress management (15%), referred for use by the parent (25%), reported as very effective (62%), and initiated 0 to 4 years after completion of cancer treatment (41%). Among CAM users, young adults used manipulative and body-based therapies [odds ratio (OR)=3.3; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.4-7.8] and mind-body therapies (OR=2.8, 95% CI: 1.2-6.4) more than children. Use of mind-body therapies was associated with not attending religious services regularly (OR=2.4; P<0.01). Half (51%) of all CAM therapies were disclosed to the physician. CONCLUSIONS Survivors of childhood cancer frequently use CAM for health promotion and mitigation of physical and psychological conditions. Clinicians should consider the role of CAM in the adoption of healthy lifestyles among this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) in patients with cancer is well recognized. Little is known, however, about the use of CAM in children with cancer during the end-of-life period. METHODS We interviewed 96 parents of children who had died of cancer in Melbourne, Australia between 1996 and 2004 to establish the prevalence of CAM use during the end-of-life period. Factors affecting the use of CAM were explored. We also determined the perceived efficacy of CAM use and its effect on the overall experience of end-of-life care. RESULTS Thirty percent of parents caring for a child with cancer reported using some form of CAM during the end-of-life period, with 44% of these families using more than one type. The most common therapies used were organic foods, faith healing, and homeopathy. There was a strong correlation between open discussion about treatment alternatives with the treating physician and parental use of CAM. The majority (78%) of respondents felt CAM use had benefited their child significantly and most felt it had not caused additional suffering. CONCLUSIONS A significant number of children with cancer are administered CAM during the end-of-life period and most families in our study had found it beneficial. The main focus should continue to be on open and honest communication between caregivers and families in order to provide the best possible holistic care.

Abstract
A cancer diagnosis elicits strong psychophysiological reactions that characterize stress. Stress is experienced by all patients but is usually not discussed during patient-healthcare professional interaction; thus underdiagnosed, very few are referred to support services. The prevalence of CAM use in patients with history of cancer is growing. The purpose of the paper is to review the aspects of cancer-related stress and interventions of commonly used complementary and alternative techniques/products for amelioration of cancer-related stress. Feasibility of intervention of several CAM techniques and products commonly used by cancer patients and survivors has been established in some cancer populations. Efficacy of some CAM techniques and products in reducing stress has been documented as well as stress-related symptoms in patients with cancer such as mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga, Tai Chi Chuan, acupuncture, energy-based techniques, and physical activity. Much of the research limitations include small study samples and variety of intervention length and content. Efficacy and safety of many CAM techniques and some herbs and vitamin B and D supplements need to be confirmed in further studies using scientific methodology. Several complementary and alternative medicine therapies could be integrated into standard cancer care to ameliorate cancer-related stress.

Abstract
Use of complementary and alternative medicine by males with Duchenne or Becker muscular dystrophy was examined using interview reports from caregivers enrolled in the population-based Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network. Of the 200 caregivers interviewed, 160 (80%) reported "ever" using complementary and alternative medicine for their affected children. Mind-body medicine (61.5%) was most frequently used, followed by biologically based practices (48.0%), manipulative and body-based practices (29.0%), and whole medical systems (8.5%). Caregivers reporting use of whole medical systems had higher education and income levels compared with nonusers; affected males had shorter disease duration. Caregivers reporting use of mind-body medicine, excluding aquatherapy, had higher education level compared with nonusers. Overall, complementary and alternative medicine use was high; disease duration, education, and income levels influenced use. These findings have implications for developing clinical care protocols and monitoring possible interactions between complementary and alternative medicine and conventional medical therapies.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to determine the type, frequency, the reason why complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments are used, the factors related with their use, and the effects of CAM usage on long-term survival. Families of a total of 120 children with cancer between 0-18 years of age, including 50 (41.7%) girls and 70 (58.3%) boys, participated in our study. The authors found that 88 patients (73.3%) used at least one CAM method, the most common (95.5%) of which was biologically based therapies. Most frequently used biologically based therapies were dietary supplements and herbal products. The most commonly used dietary supplement or herbal product was honey (43.2%) or stinging nettle (43.2%), respectively. We found that patients used such CAM methods as complementary to, but not instead of, conventional therapy. Sixty-nine out of 88 patient families (78.4%) shared the CAM method they used with their physicians. No statistically significant relation was found between socioeconomic, sociodemographic, or other factors or items and CAM use. The mean follow-up period of the CAM users and nonusers groups was 79.4 ± 36.7 (21.3-217.9) and 90.9 ± 50.3 (27.4-193.7) months, respectively. Five-year survival rates for CAM users and nonusers were found as 81.5% and 86.5%, respectively (P > .05). In conclusion, families of children with cancer use complementary and alternative treatment frequently. They do not attempt to replace conventional treatment with CAM. Higher rates of CAM use was found in families with higher educational level. CAM usage did not affect the long-term survival.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the views and practices of UK medical schools regarding the inclusion (or exclusion) of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in undergraduate medical curricula. Design Survey (by email) of UK medical schools offering MBBS (or equivalent) degrees. Results The overall response rate was 58.1% (18/31). All respondents indicated that their curricula included CAM elements. However, the quantity of CAM within curricula varied widely between medical schools, as did the methods by which CAM education was delivered. General Medical Council requirements were the strongest factor influencing the inclusion of CAM, although medical student preferences were also important. Respondents were generally satisfied with the extent of CAM provision within their curricula, while a wide range of views on the appropriateness of CAM in the medical curriculum were held by faculty members. Conclusions It may be useful for the General Medical Council to clarify the extent to which CAM should be incorporated into the curriculum. Current CAM education appears to exist primarily as a means of educating future doctors on the modalities that their patients may use or request. However, some forms of pedagogy arguably risk students assimilating CAM advocacy in an uncritical fashion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND International evidence indicates that caretakers of pediatric leukemia patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies. Such a trend has never been substantiated in the Arab world. OBJECTIVE Examine the frequency, types, modes, and reasons of CAM use among pediatric leukemia patients in Lebanon. METHODS A cross-sectional design was utilized to survey (by phone) the caregivers of all pediatric leukemia patients on the rosters of the 2 largest cancer treatment facilities in Lebanon for years 2005-2009. A total of 125 parents out of 175 (71.4%) completed the questionnaire, which included 3 sections: socio-demographic characteristics, clinical information and CAM use details. Data analysis employed univariate descriptive statistics, t-test, and χ(2) RESULTS Overall, 15.2% of respondents reported using one or more CAM therapies for their child (95% confidence interval: 8.9% to 22.0%). The main CAM therapies used included dietary supplements, prayer/spiritual healing, and unconventional cultural practices (ingesting bone ashes). CAM therapies were used for strengthening immunity (42.1%) and improving the chance of cure (21%). Pediatric users of CAM were 2 years older than nonusers and had been diagnosed with leukemia for a longer period of time (4.76 ± 3.24 vs 3.49 ± 2.38, P<.05). The percentage of males among CAM users was higher than that among nonusers (89.5% vs 56.6%, P<.05). CONCLUSION Increasing awareness of both caretakers and physicians of pediatric leukemia patients on the effects and risks of CAM therapies is essential should rational, safe, and evidence-based utilization of CAM therapies be achieved.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objectives of this study were to assess the frequency, types, and potential determinants of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use, and consideration of CAM use, collected from parents with children during the palliative phase of disease. METHODS Eligible parent respondents were identified by their primary care team. Demographic information and questionnaires were completed by the parent in the presence of a research nurse (DT). We conducted univariate logistic regression to identify predictors of parents who considered CAM use and children who actually used CAM. Descriptions of types of CAM were categorized according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. RESULTS A total of 77 parents participated. Only 22 children (29%) had received some type of CAM, with 42 parents (55%) having considered its use for their child. Whole medical systems (n = 17) and biologically based therapies (n = 15) were the most frequently considered CAM, with whole medical systems (n = 6) being the most frequently used CAM. Family and disease variables were not indicative of CAM use. However, parents with higher education and those with a family member with cancer were more likely to consider CAM use, while parents were less likely to consider CAM as children were farther from time of relapse. CONCLUSIONS The study provides initial insight into CAM use, and consideration of use, in children with cancer receiving palliative care. Further research is required to determine if the gap between CAM use and consideration is important, why this gap exists, and whether CAM has beneficial effects in this population.

Abstract
CONTEXT Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is used by pediatric patients with cancer, but the actual frequency of CAM use is undetermined. OBJECTIVE In this systematic review we summarize the current evidence on the prevalence of CAM use in pediatric patients with cancer and assess the reported quality of included studies. METHODS We systematically searched 6 major electronic databases, reference lists of existing reviews, and personal files. We included full articles about primary research studies (without language restriction) that reported the prevalence of CAM use if all or a defined subsample of participants were pediatric patients with cancer. Detailed information regarding methods and results was extracted from the original articles. A quality-assessment tool was rigorously developed on the basis of the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement and used to assess reported study quality. Formal tests of interrater agreement were conducted. RESULTS We included 28 studies with survey data (collected from 1975 to 2005) from 3526 children. In 20 studies with 2871 participants, the prevalence of any CAM use (since cancer diagnosis) ranged from 6% to 91%; considerable heterogeneity across studies precluded meta-analysis. Study quality was mixed and not correlated with CAM prevalence. Herbal remedies were the most popular CAM modality, followed by diets/nutrition and faith-healing. Commonly reported reasons for CAM use included to help cure or fight the child's cancer, symptomatic relief, and support of ongoing use of conventional therapy. There was little evidence of an association between CAM use and patients' sociodemographic characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Many pediatric patients with cancer use CAM. It is important that pediatricians be aware of this fact and encourage open communication with patients and their parents. Using standardized survey methods and CAM definitions in future studies could improve their quality and help generate comparable data. Our quality-assessment tool could prove valuable for other reviews of prevalence studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research has identified a growing use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) in the pediatric oncology setting and health care professionals should consider how they might interact with and/or be used in lieu of conventional treatment. The present study was designed to establish the prevalence of CAM usage at an Italian pediatric oncology department, and the reasons why patients used these unconventional therapies. PROCEDURE This was an observational study involving parents whose children were treated for tumors at the pediatric oncology unit of the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milano. Data were collected on their sociodemographic variables and their use of CAM by means of a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS We distributed 145 questionnaires and 97 of them (67%) were returned. Judging from this survey, 12.4% of the children used at least one type of CAM and homoeopathy was the most often used. Benefits were reported by 83% of parents. The most common reasons for using CAM were to reduce the side-effects of conventional therapies. The oncologists taking care of the patients were notified of the child's use of CAM in only one case. CONCLUSION CAM were used not as a substitute but in addition to conventional treatments. In almost all cases, oncologists were not informed that a child was using CAM, posing a risk of any interaction with pharmacological treatments being inadequately understood.

BACKGROUND The purpose of the current study was to determine the prevalence of use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) by children with cancer and to compare the characteristics of CAM users and CAM nonusers. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed at a pediatric oncology center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The parents of 97 children with cancer were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. RESULTS Overall, 84.5% of the respondents had used CAM, and most of them believed that CAM provided a boost to the immune system, and used CAM with the intention to complement conventional treatment. The most frequently used CAM was water therapy (78%), followed by spirulina (33%), vitamin C (27%), multivitamin (23%), visit to traditional healers (22%), sea cucumber (Stichopus horrens) (15%), and Chinese traditional medicine (12%). The Malay (n = 67) were using more often (93%) CAM than non-Malay (n = 30, use 67%, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS CAM use is common among Malaysian children with cancer. Understanding the sociocultural dimension of patients' health beliefs is important to a successful treatment, and pediatric oncologists should ask for the use of CAM.
