Nonlinearity measurements of thin films by third-harmonic-generation microscopy

Third and fifth order nonlinear susceptibilities in thin HfO2 layers

Third harmonic generation (THG) from dielectric layers is investigated. By forming a thin gradient of HfO₂ with continuously increasing thickness, we are able to study this process in detail. This technique allows us to elucidate the influence of the substrate and to quantify the layered materials third χ⁽³⁾(3ω: ω, ω, ω) and even fifth order χ⁽⁵⁾(3ω: ω, ω, ω, ω, - ω) nonlinear susceptibility at the fundamental wavelength of 1030 nm. This is to the best of our knowledge the first measurement of the fifth order nonlinear susceptibility in thin dielectric layers.

Third harmonic imaging contrast from tubular structures in the presence of index discontinuity

Accurate interpretation of third harmonic generation (THG) microscopy images in terms of sample optical properties and microstructure is generally hampered by the presence of excitation field distortions resulting from sample heterogeneity. Numerical methods that account for these artifacts need to be established. In this work, we experimentally and numerically analyze the THG contrast obtained from stretched hollow glass pipettes embedded in different liquids. We also characterize the nonlinear optical properties of 2,2[Formula: see text]-thiodiethanol (TDE), a water-soluble index-matching medium. We find that index discontinuity not only changes the level and modulation amplitude of polarization-resolved THG signals, but can even change the polarization direction producing maximum THG near interfaces. We then show that a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling strategy can accurately account for contrast observed in optically heterogeneous samples, whereas reference Fourier-based numerical approaches are accurate only in the absence of index mismatch. This work opens perspectives for interpreting THG microscopy images of tubular objects and other geometries.

Terahertz pump-probe of liquid water at 12.3 THz

The dynamical complexity of the hydrogen-bonded water network can be investigated with intense Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, which can drive the liquid into the nonlinear response regime and probe anharmonicity effects. Here we report single-color and polarization-dependent pump–probe experiments at 12.3 THz on liquid water, exciting the librational mode. By comparing results obtained on a static sample and a free-flowing water jet, we are able to disentangle the distinct contributions by thermal, acoustic, and nonlinear optical effects. We show that the transient transmission by the static water layer on a time scale of hundreds of microseconds can be described by thermal (slow) and acoustic (temperature-dependent) effects. In addition, during pump probe overlap we observe an anisotropic nonlinear optical response. This nonlinear signal is more prominent in the liquid jet than in the static cell, where temperature and density perturbations are more pronounced. Our measurements confirm that the THz excitation resonates with the rotationally-damped motion of water molecules, resulting in enhanced transient anisotropy. This model can be used to explain the non-linear response of water in the frequency range between about 1 and 20 THz.

Towards Intense THz Spectroscopy on Water: Characterization of Optical Rectification by GaP, OH1, and DSTMS at OPA Wavelengths

Water is the most prominent solvent. The unique properties of water are rooted in the dynamical hydrogen-bonded network. While TeraHertz (THz) radiation can probe directly the collective molecular network, several open issues remain about the interpretation of these highly anharmonic, coupled bands. In order to address this problem, we need intense THz radiation able to drive the liquid into the nonlinear response regime. Firstly, in this study, we summarize the available brilliant THz sources and compare their emission properties. Secondly, we characterize the THz emission by Gallium Phosphide (GaP), 2-{3-(4-hydroxystyryl)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene}malononitrile (OH1), and 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4'-N'-methyl-stilbazolium 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonate (DSTMS) crystals pumped by an amplified near-infrared (NIR) laser with tunable wavelength. We found that both OH1 as well as DSTMS could convert NIR laser radiation between 1200 and 2500 nm into THz radiation with high efficiency (> 2 × 10-4), resulting in THz peak fields exceeding 0.1 MV/cm for modest pump excitation (~ mJ/cm2). DSTMS emits the broadest spectrum, covering the entire bandwidth of our detector from ca. 0.5 to ~7 THz, also at a laser wavelength of 2100 nm. Future improvements will require handling the photothermal damage of these delicate organic crystals, and increasing the THz frequency.

Two-dimensional random access multiphoton spatial frequency modulated imaging

Spatial frequency modulated imaging (SPIFI) enables the use of an extended excitation source for linear and nonlinear imaging with single element detection. To date, SPIFI has only been used with fixed excitation source geometries. Here, we explore the potential for the SPIFI method when a spatial light modulator (SLM) is used to program the excitation source, opening the door to a more versatile, random access imaging environment. In addition, an in-line, quantitative pulse compensation and measurement scheme is demonstrated using a new technique, spectral phase and amplitude retrieval and compensation (SPARC). This enables full characterization of the light exposure conditions at the focal plane of the random access imaging system, an important metric for optimizing, and reporting imaging conditions within specimens.

Third-harmonic generation at the interfaces of a cuvette filled with selected organic solvents

We report on the third-harmonic generation (THG) of tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses at the interfaces of a cuvette filled with organic solvents. Such a system presents four interfaces separating two materials of different refractive indices and third-order nonlinear susceptibilities where the THG takes place because the symmetry around the focus is broken. We selected two cuvettes (silica and B270 crown glass) filled with different organic solvents (acetone, chloroform, and dimethyl sulfoxide) in order to have a variety of interfaces with different linear and nonlinear optical properties. For some of the peaks, the self-focusing modifies the expected cubic power law dependence for THG and as a consequence the four peak profiles may be quite uneven. Although the THG is due to the electronic part of the nonlinear susceptibility, it can suffer from the influence of the self-focusing effect, a Kerr nonlinearity that can have both instantaneous electronic and slow nuclear contributions. This mixture of two distinct third-order nonlinear processes was never considered for such interfaces. All the THG signals could be understood by taking into account the self-focusing effect. Furthermore, the nonlinear refractive indices, n(2), and third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of the solvents, χ((3)), could be determined simultaneously by the THG signals using the cuvette walls as a reference.

Characterization and χ(3) measurements of thin films by third-harmonic microscopy

Third-harmonic (TH) generation from a thin layer on a substrate is analyzed in reflection and transmission geometry taking into account interference effects of fundamental and TH waves in the film, the backward-generated TH, and the pump-beam profile. Conditions are derived for both geometries where the signal from the film dominates, which is important for TH microscopy. The analysis results are applied to retrieve from experiment nonlinear susceptibilities χ(3) of hafnia/silica mixture (Hf(x)Si(1-x)O₂), alumina (Al₂O₃), and scandia (Sc₂O₃) thin films.

Measuring the molecular second hyperpolarizability in absorptive solutions by the third harmonic generation ratio technique

Measurement of the second hyperpolarizability (γ) values of compounds can provide insight into the molecular structural requirements for enhancement of third harmonic generation (THG) signal. A convenient method for measuring the γ of compounds in solutions was developed by implementing the THG ratio method which is based on measuring the THG intensity from two interfaces using a nonlinear optical microscope while accounting for the refractive index of solutions at the fundamental and third harmonic wavelengths. We demonstrated that the difference in refractive index at both wavelengths strongly influenced the calculation of γ values when compounds have absorption near the third harmonic or fundamental wavelength. To this end, a refractometer with the wavelength tuning range from UV to near IR was constructed, and the measured refractive indices were used to extract the γ values. The γ values of carotenoids and chlorophylls found in photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes were explored. Large differences in the refractive index at third harmonic and fundamental wavelengths for chlorophylls result in γ values that are more than two orders of magnitude larger than γ values for carotenoids as well as the sign of chlorophylls'γ values is negative while carotenoids have positive γ values.

Combined third-harmonic generation and four-wave mixing microscopy of tissues and embryos

Nonlinear microscopy can be used to probe the intrinsic optical properties of biological tissues. Using femtosecond pulses, third-harmonic generation (THG) and four-wave mixing (FWM) signals can be efficiently produced and detected simultaneously. Both signals probe a similar parameter, i.e. the real part of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility χ((3)). However THG and FWM images result from different phase matching conditions and provide complementary information. We analyze this complementarity using calculations, z-scan measurements on water and oils, and THG-FWM imaging of cell divisions in live zebrafish embryos. The two signals exhibit different sensitivity to sample size and clustering in the half-wavelength regime. Far from resonance, THG images reveal spatial variations |Δχ((3))(-3ω;ω,ω,ω)| with remarkable sensitivity while FWM directly reflects the distribution of χ((3))(-2ω(1) + ω(2);ω(1), -ω(2), ω(1)). We show that FWM images provide χ((3)) maps useful for proper interpretation of cellular THG signals, and that combined imaging carries additional structural information. Finally we present simultaneous imaging of intrinsic THG, FWM, second-harmonic (SHG) and two-photon-excited fluorescence (2PEF) signals in live Caenorhabditis elegans worms illustrating the information provided by multimodal nonlinear imaging of unstained tissue.

Highly efficient THG in TiO2 nanolayers for third-order pulse characterization

Third harmonic generation (THG) of femtosecond laser pulses in sputtered nanocrystalline TiO2 thin films is investigated. Using layers of graded thickness, the dependence of THG on the film parameters is studied. The maximum THG signal is observed at a thickness of 180 nm. The corresponding conversion efficiency is 26 times larger compared to THG at the air-glass interface. For a demonstration of the capabilities of such a highly nonlinear material for pulse characterization, third-order autocorrelation and interferometric frequency-resolved optical gating (IFROG) traces are recorded with unamplified nanojoule pulses directly from a broadband femtosecond laser oscillator.

Resonant frequency-domain interferometry via third-harmonic generation

A method for measuring resonances using a combination of third-harmonic generation and frequency-domain interferometry is described and demonstrated in an index-matched dielectric material. The phase of the third-harmonic spectrum of a pulse generated from a resonant NdAlO(3) thin film and a temporally displaced sapphire substrate pulse was measured by analyzing the spectral interference pattern. The appropriate combination of substrate and film signals was obtained by translating the sample through the laser focus while observing the third-harmonic intensity.

Quantitative characterization of biological liquids for third-harmonic generation microscopy

Third-harmonic generation (THG) microscopy provides images of unstained biological samples based on spatial variations in third-order nonlinear susceptibility, refractive index, and dispersion. In this study, we establish quantitative values for the third-order nonlinear susceptibilities of several solvents (water, ethanol, glycerol), physiological aqueous (ions, amino acids, polypeptides, bovine serum albumin, glucose) and lipid (triglycerides, cholesterol) solutions as a function of solute concentration in the 1.05-1.25 microm excitation range. We use these data in conjunction with imaging experiments to show that THG imaging with approximately 1.2 microm excitation lacks specificity and sensitivity to detect physiological ion concentration changes, and that nonaqueous structures such as lipid bodies provide a more robust source of signal. Finally, we illustrate the impact of index-matching liquids in THG images. These data provide a basis for interpreting biological THG images and for developing additional applications.

How to measure chi(3) of a nanoparticle

Most of the known methods to measure the nonlinear optical properties of materials deal with the bulk properties, but there are many demanding applications that require those measurements to be done on a single particle or a single molecule. We report a novel application of nonlinear optics to measure the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of nanoparticles in solutions. By measuring the power of the third harmonic generated in a diluted solution of nanoparticles, both the size and chi(3) can be extracted from a simple set of measurements.
