Momentum dependence of orbital excitations in Mott-insulating titanates

Collective Nature of Orbital Excitations in Layered Cuprates in the Absence of Apical Oxygens

We have investigated the 3d orbital excitations in CaCuO_{2} (CCO), Nd_{2}CuO_{4} (NCO), and La_{2}CuO_{4} (LCO) using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In LCO they behave as well-localized excitations, similarly to several other cuprates. On the contrary, in CCO and NCO the d_{xy} orbital clearly disperses, pointing to a collective character of this excitation (orbiton) in compounds without apical oxygen. We ascribe the origin of the dispersion as stemming from a substantial next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) orbital superexchange. Such an exchange leads to the liberation of the orbiton from its coupling to magnons, which is associated with the orbiton hopping between nearest neighbor copper sites. Finally, we show that the exceptionally large NNN orbital superexchange can be traced back to the absence of apical oxygens suppressing the charge transfer energy.

Evidence of Strong Orbital-Selective Spin-Orbital-Phonon Coupling in CrVO_{4}

Coupling of orbital degree of freedom with a spin exchange, i.e., Kugel-Khomskii-type interaction (KK), governs a host of material properties, including colossal magnetoresistance, enhanced magnetoelectric response, and photoinduced high-temperature magnetism. In general, KK-type interactions lead to deviation in experimental observables of coupled Hamiltonian near or below the magnetic transition. Using diffraction and spectroscopy experiments, here we report anomalous changes in lattice parameters, electronic states, spin dynamics, and phonons at four times the Néel transition temperature (T_{N}) in CrVO_{4}. The temperature is significantly higher than other d-orbital compounds such as manganites and vanadates, where effects are limited to near or below T_{N}. The experimental observations are rationalized using first-principles and Green's function-based phonon and spin simulations that show unprecedentedly strong KK-type interactions via a superexchange process and an orbital-selective spin-phonon coupling coefficient at least double the magnitude previously reported for strongly coupled spin-phonon systems. Our results present an opportunity to explore the effect of KK-type interactions and spin-phonon coupling well above T_{N} and possibly bring various properties closer to application, for example, strong room-temperature magnetoelectric coupling.

Spectroscopy of the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4

We investigate the electronic structure of Cs₂CuCl₄, a material discussed in the framework of a frustrated quantum antiferromagnet, by means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) and density functional theory (DFT). From the non-dispersive highly localizedddexcitations, we resolve the crystal field splitting of the Cu²⁺ions in a strongly distorted tetrahedral coordination. This allows us to model the RIXS spectrum within the crystal field theory (CFT), assign theddorbital excitations and retrieve experimentally the values of the crystal field splitting parametersD_q,D_sandD_τ. The electronic structure obtainedab-initioagrees with the RIXS spectrum and modelled by CFT, highlighting the potential of combined spectroscopic, cluster and DFT calculations to determine the electronic ground state of complex materials.

Spin resolved electron density study of YTiO3 in its ferromagnetic phase: signature of orbital ordering

The present work reports on the charge and spin density modelling of YTiO₃ in its ferromagnetic state (T _C = 27 K). Accurate polarized neutron diffraction and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments were carried out on a single crystal at the ORPHÉE reactor (LLB) and SPRING8 synchrotron source. The experimental data are modelled by the spin resolved pseudo-atomic multipolar model (Deutsch et al., 2012 ▸). The refinement strategy is discussed and the result of this electron density modelling is compared with that from XRD measured at 100 K and with density functional theory calculations. The results show that the spin and charge densities around the Ti atom have lobes directed away from the O atoms, confirming the filling of the t _2g orbitals of the Ti atom. The d _xy orbital is less populated than d _xz and d _yz , which is a sign of a partial lift of degeneracy of the t _2g orbitals. This study confirms the orbital ordering at low temperature (20 K), which is already present in the paramagnetic state above the ferromagnetic transition (100 K).

A high-energy-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectrometer at ID20 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

An end-station for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and (resonant) X-ray emission spectroscopy at beamline ID20 of ESRF - The European Synchrotron is presented. The spectrometer hosts five crystal analysers in Rowland geometry for large solid angle collection and is mounted on a rotatable arm for scattering in both the horizontal and vertical planes. The spectrometer is optimized for high-energy-resolution applications, including partial fluorescence yield or high-energy-resolution fluorescence detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy and the study of elementary electronic excitations in solids. In addition, it can be used for non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements of valence electron excitations.

Indirect K-edge bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectrum of α-FeTe

We calculate the K-edge indirect bimagnon resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity spectra of the bicollinear antiferromagnetic order known to occur in the α-FeTe chalcogenide system. Utilizing linear spin wave theory for this large-S spin system we find that the bimagnon spectrum contains four scattering channels (two intraband and two interband). We find from our calculations that for suitable energy-momentum combination the RIXS spectra can exhibit a one-, two- or three- peak structure. The number of peaks provides a clue on the various bimagnon excitation processes that can be supported both in and within the acoustic and optical magnon branches of the bicollinear antiferromagnet. Unlike the RIXS response of the antiferromagnetic or the collinear antiferromagnetic spin ordering, the RIXS intensity spectrum of the bicollinear antiferromagnet does not vanish at the magnetic ordering wave vector [Formula: see text]. It is also sensitive to next-next nearest neighbor and biquadratic coupling interactions. Our predicted RIXS spectrum can be utilized to understand the role of multi-channel bimagnon spin excitations present in the α-FeTe chalcogenide.

Orbital breathing effects in the computation of x-ray d-ion spectra in solids by ab initio wave-function-based methods

In existing theoretical approaches to core-level excitations of transition-metal ions in solids relaxation and polarization effects due to the inner core hole are often ignored or described phenomenologically. Here we set up an ab initio computational scheme that explicitly accounts for such physics in the calculation of x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra. Good agreement is found with experimental transition-metal L-edge data for the strongly correlated d ⁹ cuprate Li₂CuO₂, for which we determine the absolute scattering intensities. The newly developed methodology opens the way for the investigation of even more complex d ⁿ electronic structures of group VI B to VIII B correlated oxide compounds.

Theoretical approach to resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in iron-based superconductors at the energy scale of the superconducting gap

We develop a phenomenological theory to predict the characteristic features of the momentum-dependent scattering amplitude in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the energy scale of the superconducting gap in iron-based super-conductors. Taking into account all relevant orbital states as well as their specific content along the Fermi surface we evaluate the charge and spin dynamical structure factors for the compounds LaOFeAs and LiFeAs, based on tight-binding models which are fully consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We find a characteristic intensity redistribution between charge and spin dynamical structure factors which discriminates between sign-reversing and sign-preserving quasiparticle excitations. Consequently, our results show that RIXS spectra can distinguish between s± and s++ wave gap functions in the singlet pairing case. In addition, we find that an analogous intensity redistribution at small momenta can reveal the presence of a chiral p-wave triplet pairing.

Spin-Orbital Excitation Continuum and Anomalous Electron-Phonon Interaction in the Mott Insulator LaTiO_{3}

Raman scattering experiments on stoichiometric, Mott-insulating LaTiO_{3} over a wide range of excitation energies reveal a broad electronic continuum which is featureless in the paramagnetic state, but develops a gap of ~800 cm^{-1} upon cooling below the Néel temperature T_{N}=146 K. In the antiferromagnetic state, the spectral weight below the gap is transferred to well-defined spectral features due to spin and orbital excitations. Low-energy phonons exhibit pronounced Fano anomalies indicative of strong interaction with the electron system for T>T_{N}, but become sharp and symmetric for T<T_{N}. The electronic continuum and the marked renormalization of the phonon lifetime by the onset of magnetic order are highly unusual for Mott insulators and indicate liquidlike correlations between spins and orbitals.

Low-energy V t2g orbital excitations in NdVO3

The electronic structure of NdVO(3) and YVO(3) has been investigated as a function of sample temperature using resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering at the V L(3)-edge. Most of the observed spectral features are in good agreement with an atomic crystal-field multiplet model. However, a low energy feature is observed at ∼ 0.4 eV that cannot be explained by crystal-field arguments. The resonant behaviour of this feature establishes it as due to excitations of the V t(2g) states. Moreover, this feature exhibits a strong sample temperature dependence, reaching maximum intensity in the orbitally-ordered phase of NdVO(3), before becoming suppressed at low temperatures. This behaviour indicates that the origin of this feature is a collective orbital excitation, i.e. the bi-orbiton.

Prospects of high-resolution resonant X-ray inelastic scattering studies on solid materials, liquids and gases at diffraction-limited storage rings

The spectroscopic technique of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) will particularly profit from immensely improved brilliance of diffraction-limited storage rings (DLSRs). In RIXS one measures the intensities of excitations as a function of energy and momentum transfer. DLSRs will allow for pushing the achievable energy resolution, signal intensity and the sampled spot size to new limits. With RIXS one nowadays probes a broad range of electronic systems reaching from simple molecules to complex materials displaying phenomena like peculiar magnetism, two-dimensional electron gases, superconductivity, photovoltaic energy conversion and heterogeneous catalysis. In this article the types of improved RIXS studies that will become possible with X-ray beams from DLSRs are envisioned.

Real-space visualization of remnant Mott gap and magnon excitations

We demonstrate the ability to visualize real-space dynamics of charge gap and magnon excitations in the Mott phase of the single-band Hubbard model and the remnants of these excitations with hole or electron doping. At short times, the character of magnetic and charge excitations is maintained even for large doping away from the Mott and antiferromagnetic phases. Doping influences both the real-space patterns and long timescales of these excitations with a clear carrier asymmetry attributable to particle-hole symmetry breaking in the underlying model. Further, a rapidly oscillating charge-density-wave-like pattern weakens, but persists as a visible demonstration of a subleading instability at half-filling which remains upon doping. The results offer an approach to analyzing the behavior of systems where momentum space is either inaccessible or poorly defined.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering as a probe of the phase and excitations of the order parameter of superconductors

The capability to probe the dispersion of elementary spin, charge, orbital, and lattice excitations has positioned resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the forefront of photon science. Here we develop the scattering theory for RIXS on superconductors, calculating its momentum-dependent scattering amplitude. Considering superconductors with different pairing symmetries, we show that the low-energy scattering is strongly affected by the superconducting gap and coherence factors. This establishes RIXS as a tool to disentangle pairing symmetries and to probe the elementary excitations of unconventional superconductors.

Design and performance of a versatile curved-crystal spectrometer for high-resolution spectroscopy in the tender x-ray range

A complete in-vacuum curved-crystal x-ray emission spectrometer in Johansson geometry has been constructed for a 2-6 keV energy range with sub natural line-width energy resolution. The spectrometer is designed to measure x-ray emission induced by photon and charged particle impact on solid and gaseous targets. It works with a relatively large x-ray source placed inside the Rowland circle and employs position sensitive detection of diffracted x-rays. Its compact modular design enables fast and easy installation at a synchrotron or particle accelerator beamline. The paper presents main characteristics of the spectrometer and illustrates its capabilities by showing few selected experimental examples.

Ultrahigh resolution soft x-ray emission spectrometer at BL07LSU in SPring-8

An extremely high resolution flat field type slit less soft x-ray emission spectrometer has been designed and constructed for the long undulator beamline BL07LSU in SPring-8. By optimizing the ruling parameters of two cylindrical gratings, a high energy resolution ΔE < 100 meV and/or an E∕ΔE ~ 10 000 are expected for the energy range of 350 eV - 750 eV taking into account the broadening by the spatial resolution (25 μm) of a CCD detector. A coma-free operation mode proposed by Strocov et al., is also applied to eliminate both defocus and coma aberrations. The spectrometer demonstrated experimentally that E/ΔE = 10 050 and 8046 for N 1s (402.1 eV) and Mn 2p (641.8 eV) edges, respectively.

Intrinsic coupling of orbital excitations to spin fluctuations in Mott insulators

We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferro-orbital ordered ground states. The composite orbiton-magnon modes that emerge fractionalize again in one dimension, giving rise to spin-orbital separation in the peculiar regime where spinons are faster than orbitons.

Two-spinon and orbital excitations of the spin-Peierls system TiOCl

We combine high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with cluster calculations utilizing a recently derived effective magnetic scattering operator to analyze the polarization, excitation energy, and momentum-dependent excitation spectrum of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl in the range expected for orbital and magnetic excitations (0-2.5 eV). Ti 3d orbital excitations yield complete information on the temperature-dependent crystal-field splitting. In the spin-Peierls phase we observe a dispersive two-spinon excitation and estimate the inter- and intradimer magnetic exchange coupling from a comparison to cluster calculations.
