Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior and Continuously Tunable Resistivity Exponents in the Anderson-Hubbard Model at Finite Temperature

Magnetotransport and Fermi surface segmentation in Pauli limited superconductors

We report the first theoretical investigation of the spectroscopic, electrical and optical transport signatures ofd-wave Pauli limited superconductors, based on a non perturbative numerical approach. We demonstrate that the high magnetic field low temperature regime of these materials host a finite momentum paired superconducting phase. Multi-branched dispersion spectra with finite energy superconducting gaps, anisotropic segmentation of the Fermi surface and spatial modulations of the superconducting order characterizes this finite momentum paired phase and should be readily accessible through angle resolved photo emission spectroscopy, quasiparticle interference and differential conductance measurements. Based on the electrical and optical transport properties we capture the non Fermi liquid behavior of these systems at high temperatures, dominated by local superconducting correlations and characterized by resilient quasiparticles which survive the breakdown of the Fermi liquid description. We map out the generic thermal phase diagram of thed-wave Pauli limited superconductors and provide for the first time the accurate estimates of the thermal scales corresponding to the: (a) loss of (quasi) long range superconducting phase coherence (Tc), (b) loss of local pair correlations (Tpg), (c) breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory (Tmax) and cross-over from the non Fermi liquid to the bad metallic phase (TBR). Our thermal phase diagram mapped out on the basis of the spectroscopic and transport properties are found to be in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations on CeCoIn5andκ-BEDT, in terms of the thermodynamic phases and the phase transitions. The results presented in this paper are expected to initiate important transport and spectroscopic experiments on the Pauli limitedd-wave superconductors, providing sharp signatures of the finite momentum Cooper paired state in these materials.

Hydrogen in actinides: electronic and lattice properties

Hydrides of actinides, their magnetic, electronic, transport, and thermodynamic properties are discussed within a general framework of H impact on bonding, characterized by volume expansion, affecting mainly the 5fstates, and a charge transfer towards H, which influences mostly the 6dand 7sstates. These general mechanisms have diverse impact on individual actinides, depending on the degree of localization of their 5fstates. Hydrogenation of uranium yields UH₂and UH₃, binary hydrides that are strongly magnetic due to the 5fband narrowing and reduction of the 5f-6dhybridization. Pu hydrides become magnetic as well, mainly as a result of the stabilization of the magnetic 5f⁵state and elimination of the admixture of the non-magnetic 5f⁶component.Ab-initiocomputational analyses, which for example suggest that the ferromagnetism ofβ-UH₃is rather intricate involving two non-collinear sublattices, are corroborated by spectroscopic studies of sputter-deposited thin films, yielding a clean surface and offering a variability of compositions. It is found that valence-band photoelectron spectra cannot be compared directly with the 5fⁿground-state density of states. Being affected by electron correlations in the excited final states, they rather reflect the atomic 5f^n-1multiplets. Similar tendencies can be identified also in hydrides of binary and ternary intermetallic compounds. H absorption can be used as a tool for fine tuning of electronic structure around a quantum critical point. A new direction is represented by actinide polyhydrides with a potential for high-temperature superconductivity.

Pauli limited d-wave superconductors: quantum breached pair phase and thermal transitions

We report a quantum phase transition in Pauli limited d-wave superconductors and give the mean field estimates of the associated quantum critical point. For a population imbalanced d-wave superconductor a stable ground state phase viz quantum breached pair phase has been identified which comprises of spatial coexistence of gapless superconductivity and nonzero magnetization. Based on the thermodynamic and quasiparticle indicators we for the first time analyze this phase, discuss the thermal behavior of Pauli limited d-wave superconductor, give accurate estimates of the thermal scales associated with such systems and map out the pseudogap regime. Our work shows that while the Pauli limited superconductors are known to exhibit exotic modulated superconducting phase at large imbalance of fermion populations; in the regime of weak imbalance an intriguing phase of competing orders is realized. We have established that rather than the superconducting pairing field, it is the average magnetization of the system that quantifies this quantum phase transition. Given that the existing Pauli limited superconductors possess unconventional pairing state symmetry of the superconducting order, our work promises to open up new avenues in the experimental research of these materials. We have also demonstrated an alternate scenario wherein the quantum breached pair phase is a natural outcome for a d-wave superconductor with unequal effective masses of the fermion species.

Tunable resistivity exponents in the metallic phase of epitaxial nickelates

We report a detailed analysis of the electrical resistivity exponent of thin films of NdNiO₃ as a function of epitaxial strain. Thin films under low strain conditions show a linear dependence of the resistivity versus temperature, consistent with a classical Fermi gas ruled by electron-phonon interactions. In addition, the apparent temperature exponent, n, can be tuned with the epitaxial strain between n = 1 and n = 3. We discuss the critical role played by quenched random disorder in the value of n. Our work shows that the assignment of Fermi/Non-Fermi liquid behaviour based on experimentally obtained resistivity exponents requires an in-depth analysis of the degree of disorder in the material.

Strong electronic correlations in rare-earth nickelates make them prone to unconventional behaviour but extrinsic effects hamper the interpretation of data. Guo et al. show that apparent non-Fermi liquid transport in NdNiO₃ is tuned by strain and disorder, suggesting a more conventional origin.

Disorder-driven non-Fermi liquid behavior in itinerant ferromagnet α-Co5Ge3

The physical properties of itinerant ferromagnet [Formula: see text]-Co₅Ge₃ with both strong disorder and spin fluctuations was studied. The dc and ac susceptibility show that both spin fluctuations and disorder dominate the physical properties. In the spin glass phase, with a coexisting ferromagnetic state ([Formula: see text]30 K), both non-Fermi liquid behavior and large exponent of scaling relation of [Formula: see text] are observed and attributed to the spin fluctuations and disorder induced by cobalt defects. Upon the increase of external field, Fermi liquid behavior restores due to the suppression of spin fluctuations and disorder. In addition, a large anomalous Hall coefficient R _s is observed. Our results suggest that [Formula: see text]-Co₅Ge₃ is a typical itinerant ferromagnet to explore the interplay of disorder and spin fluctuations.

Local Spectroscopies Reveal Percolative Metal in Disordered Mott Insulators

We elucidate the mechanism by which a Mott insulator transforms into a non-Fermi liquid metal upon increasing disorder at half filling. By correlating maps of the local density of states, the local magnetization, and the local bond conductivity, we find a collapse of the Mott gap toward a V-shaped pseudogapped density of states that occurs concomitantly with the decrease of magnetism around the highly disordered sites but an increase of bond conductivity. These metallic regions percolate to form an emergent non-Fermi liquid phase with a conductivity that increases with temperature. Bond conductivity measured via local microwave impedance combined with charge and spin local spectroscopies are ideal tools to corroborate our predictions.

Continuous transition from weakly localized regime to strong localization regime in Nd0.7La0.3NiO3 films

We report an investigation of metal-insulator transition (MIT) using conductivity and magnetoconductance (MC) measurements down to 0.3 K in Nd_0.7La_0.3NiO₃ films grown on crystalline substrates of LaAlO₃ (LAO), SrTiO₃ (STO), and NdGaO₃ (NGO) by pulsed laser deposition. The film grown on LAO experiences a compressive strain and shows metallic behavior with the onset of a weak resistivity upturn below 2 K which is linked to the onset of weak localization contribution. Films grown on STO and NGO show a cross-over from a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistance regime to negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistance regime at definite temperatures. We establish that a cross-over from PTC to NTC on cooling does not necessarily constitute a MIT because the extrapolated conductivity at zero temperature [Formula: see text] though small (<10 S cm^-1) is finite, signaling the existence of a bad metallic state and absence of an activated transport. The value of [Formula: see text] for films grown on NGO is reduced by a factor of 40 compared to that for films grown on STO. We show that a combination of certain physical factors makes substituted nickelate (that are known to exhibit first-order Mott type transition), undergo a continuous transition as seen in systems undergoing disorder/composition driven Anderson transition. The MC measurement also supports the above observation and shows that at low temperatures, there exists a positive MC that arises from the quantum interference which co-exists with a spin-related negative MC that becomes progressively stronger as the electrons approach a strongly localized state in the film grown on NGO.
